As you are reading this, hopefully you have had time to take in a baseball game, get out to the lake for a boat ride, or enjoy a picnic with your family. The Crawdads will have their first home game on April 12th at L.P. Frans Stadium and will bring back their annual Christian Concerts on April 28th. This month also brings Hickory Hops Brewer’s Festival on April 21st in downtown Hickory. Whatever your pleasure, we are so fortunate in this area to have numerous events for every member of the family to enjoy.

Spring has arrived! It is time to
brighten up our décor and clean out our flower beds and pots, getting them ready for some May plantings. I don’t know about you, but after hibernating during the cold winter months, I am ready to let the sunshine in! Bring the color of spring indoors by replacing dark throw pillows and bedding with light, airy colors. Arrange pitchers of tulips and other fresh flowers or simply display a bowl of lemons. Open the blinds and drapes, clean the windows, and let the sun pour in! If the weather permits, open the windows for a fresh breeze, and air out your indoor spaces. Choose a sunny window, and start an herb garden in small pots. The new colors and plants will not only brighten your space but will lift your mood. If you like planting a vegetable garden, then April is your month in our area according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. On their website at www.almanac.com, they offer a planting calendar under the gardening tab. Just put in your zip code, and a 12-month calendar is produced that explains what to plant when. According to our area’s calendar, April is perfect for planting beets, broccoli, summer cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, kale, leeks, lettuce,

potatoes, spinach, peas, and other vegetables. You want to wait until May to plant melons, okra, peppers, squash, and tomatoes. This is a very handy website, especially for new gardeners. The Almanac also estimates that our last frost will be around April 4th. For that reason, I typically wait until May to plant any annuals. I have learned this lesson the hard way, by planting flowers too early only to lose them to a late frost. In my defense, it is extremely difficult to visit a garden center or greenhouse when all those flowers are in bloom and not make an impulsive purchase! However, if you buy them too early, you will be bringing them indoors to avoid frost and cold weather that can damage or even kill the plant. Instead, I now spend April cleaning outdoor spaces and furniture, clearing out pots and adding new soil, and prepping flower beds–– pulling weeds, turning mulch, and adding fresh mulch where needed––in preparation of planting those beautiful blooms in May. Don’t despair. Warm weather is just around the corner. Enjoy April and its mild temperatures. Before long, we will be reminiscing about spring when summer rolls around and the weather is smoldering!

She established Everett’s Business Development Center after the 2008 recession so the company would maintain its long-standing reputation of quality sales and service. “I started personally calling our customers to ask if they were totally satisfied,” she said, “and if there was anything we needed to do for them. The Business Development Center now has a staff of ten highly trained service reps whose job is to make sure we’re doing everything right. They listen carefully and then follow through on details.” All departments in all the stores receive continuous improvement training and staff have trained at the Disney Institute, one of the premier professional development companies around. Many Everett employees have been with the company for decades. CFO Patty Annas started full-time in 1979. When it comes to choosing a nursing or rehabilitation center, it’s important for many of us that it “feels like home.” There are several aspects that make visitors say Conover Nursing and Rehabilitation Center feels just like home. CNRC is the only family-owned healthcare provider of rehabilitation therapy and skilled nursing services in Catawba County. Josh Sherrill is a fourth-generation owner and long-term care administrator. His vision of skilled nursing services and care stems from the wisdom of generations of dedicated long-term care providers. 18

This allows CNRC’s environment to be less corporate and much more personal. “I have had visitors seek me out to describe the differences in the atmosphere of our facility compared to others they have visited,” Dana Withrow, director of nursing, said. “I recently had a family member tell me that she enjoys coming to our facility because our staff are always smiling, laughing, and happy––always right there to lend a helping hand––and you can just feel the warm and fuzzy vibe when you come in.” That family feeling is experienced from the start. “From the moment you enter, our lobby is warm and inviting. It feels
like a home,” Todd Roper, administrator, said. “We don’t have institutional furnishings. We do have a beautiful water wall, leather couches, and all types of plants and art that make people feel welcomed.” The facility has a new outdoor healing garden with a waterfall that residents enjoy. “Many residents visit the waterfall every day,” Nicole Roper, director of therapy, said. “It’s an inspiring environment for residents and families to enjoy the outdoors.” Beyond the decor and layout of the facility, the caring relationships the staff build makes CNRC feel like family. Todd credits everyone, from every department, for their commitment to establishing and nurturing these relationships. Therapy department employees are employed by CNRC; they are not contracted. “This really sets us apart from other facilities,” Nicole said. “Half of the therapists have been here for 11 years.
Patients really appreciate this, because once a relationship is established with their therapist, they want to see them again next time. It’s familiar and comforting.” The activities department keeps residents engaged with passions they enjoy like painting, drawing, card ministry, and entertainment, activities that bring them joy. CNRC involves patients’ families every chance they can. Every November, they host friends and family
night, complete with a spaghetti dinner, entertainment, and giveaways. The combination of the nursing staff working together with therapists makes for a good team. When patients are here for short-term rehab, nursing and therapy work together to ensure the best patient outcome. Geriatric nurse managers lead the nursing team toward favorable results, outstanding patient satisfaction, and exceptional care. Whether the need is a prolonged skilled nursing

What's Cooking?! Spiced Honey and Black Pepper-Glazed Ham
Spiced Honey and Black Pepper-Glazed Ham Servings: 12
8-10 pounds cooked shankend ham Water (optional) 1 tablespoon cracked black pepper 1 tablespoon ground mustard 1 tablespoon garlic powder ½ cup honey 1½ teaspoons ground Saigon cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground cloves Directions
Heat oven to 325° F. With sharp knife, score ham at 1-inch intervals; place in baking dish. If ham appears dry, moisten surface with water. In small bowl, combine black pepper, mustard and garlic powder. Rub pepper mixture over surface of ham. Roast according to package directions. Combine honey, cinnamon and cloves. Drizzle over ham during last 30 minutes of roasting. Remove ham from oven and let rest 20 minutes before slicing.

pound (4 cups) baby carrots cup water teaspoon ground Saigon cinnamon

teaspoon ground ginger tablespoons 100% pure maple syrup tablespoon butter Sea salt, to taste
Directions
In large skillet, combine carrots, water, cinnamon and ginger. Mix well. Cover and cook

Frye Regional Donates $2,500 From 5K To Catawba County Backpack Program By Amanda Brasier
Frye Regional Medical Center has helped the Catawba County Backpack Program expand with a donation of $2,500 from the Making Communities Healthier 5K race sponsored by Frye and Fleet Feet Sports in Hickory. This donation provided additional resources to the Backpack Program, which provides weekend nourishment to students in Catawba County throughout the school year, assisting the program to expand to include Maiden Middle School in February. In addition to the monetary donation, Frye, in partnership with Lowes Foods Belle Hollow, donated a box truck filled with food after the race. “As the recipient of Frye Regional’s 5K, we’re excited to be able to serve even more kids in our community who may find it difficult to find the nourishment they need on the weekends,” said Amanda Freeland, Backpack Program coordinator. The donated funds were proceeds from the Making Communities Healthier 5K, which Frye Regional and Fleet Feet Sports brought to our community in September of 2017. The date for this year’s Making Communities Healthier 5K is September 22 in Hickory. Additional 5K sponsors include Cargo Transporters, Dalco Nonwovens, LLC, OrthoCarolina, Servpro, Pepsi, Piedmont Pathology, Guardian Health Services, Bumgarner Oil, Catawba Pediatric Associates, It’s My Party! I have a confession to make: I am downright sick of social media. A few months ago, I read an article about smartphone apps that monitor your use of every app on your phone. The one I chose to download also monitored the total time you spent on your phone each day and how many times you checked your phone. The average time I spent on my phone was about two hours a day, which I learned was far less than the national average for my age group (shoutout to my fellow millennials!) of about five hours a day. The app also tells you which apps are sucking up the majority of your time, and I wasn’t surprised by what topped my list at all: Instagram. Here’s the thing, though. I don’t actually enjoy Instagram or social media. I don’t have a Twitter, and I only check Facebook for local events. I actually really wish there was a separate site specifically for that purpose, so I wouldn’t
have to scroll through people’s political rants or endless baby photos. I don’t think I would have a Facebook account at all if it weren’t for the groups that I’m in and the local event invitations. As for Snapchat, I probably check mine about once a day and sometimes forget it’s even installed on my phone. Instagram is really where my problem lies. Just like many of you, I scroll mindlessly through Instagram and don’t even really process what I’m absorbing, and that’s worrisome. I have an aunt who used to turn down book or TV recommendations based on the fact that she wanted to be very intentional about what she was taking in. I used to think that was weird, but now I’m in full support of that idea. When I think about the content that I’m constantly looking at, none of it seems authentic. Maybe it’s because I follow a lot of influencers, but I feel like everyone is just trying to sell me something,
whether it’s an actual product or a lifestyle. Even my normal friends have adopted this same social media tactic: the lighting has to be perfect, the plate has to be arranged at just the right angle. I feel frustrated because, not only do I use it on a personal basis, but also for my business. Frankly, when I go on a social media detox, which I do pretty frequently on my personal account, I notice that I miss references in conversations, and sometimes people are offended. For instance, I had a meeting scheduled with someone recently, and they assumed that I knew they had the flu, even though they hadn’t emailed or texted me about it. Because they had posted on social media, they just figured I would have seen it. That’s the reason I tell myself that I can’t sever ties with social media, but is that really true? Just like any addiction, it may just be an excuse. HICKORY LIVING • APRIL 2018

USA Today ranked Hickory the third biggest economic gainer of 2017, after rising 64 places to #103 on Milken Institute’s list of Best-Performing Cities in America.

WTVI PBS Charlotte featured downtown Newton in a January episode of “Carolina Impact” showcasing the Catawba County Museum of History, the Old Post Office Playhouse, and the historic Newton Depot and Museum. National Geographic ranked Hickory in the top 30 best small cities in the U.S. and noted for hipster-friendly offerings,
from tattoo parlors to vintage clothing boutiques. Each year, craft beer enthusiasts gather at the popular Hickory Hops festival that features more than 50 microbreweries and live music. The Kiplinger Letter ranked Hickory in the top 10 best places to retire in the U.S. in August 2017. It detailed our moderate weather and location, low cost of living, vibrant arts scene, access to quality health care, and revitalization efforts as evidence of a thriving quality of life. Realtor.com named Hickory as the top tinsel town in America for holiday lovers. We were placed at the top of the list after considering a variety of holiday aspects, including Christmas parades, holiday events, and the number of Christmas trees cut down. SmartAsset, a financial technology company, ranked Hickory as the ninth best place to raise a family in North Carolina. The study considered 10 different factors, including data on median home values, violent and property crime rates, unemployment rates, housing costs, percent of families in poverty, high school graduation rate, and median household income. Charlotte magazine published an article on the thriving business climate in the Hickory Metro area featuring Chamber shareholders and investors, Century Furniture, the Hickory Furniture Mart, Transportation Insight, Hatch Sandwich Bar, Hickory Tree Furniture Consignment, and Highland Avenue Restaurant, among a few other local businesses. “Carolina Reno” featured Conovergrown entrepreneurs, brother-sister duo Roxy Te Owens and San San Te, in the pilot episode on HGTV. Pending great ratings, there’s potential for a Catawba County-based series. Business North Carolina magazine states in their February 2018 feature, “For Catawba County, it looks like the best is yet to come.” I concur.
