We are tackling the question of kitchen and bathroom design this issue, the two all important and probably most costly areas of our homes or any project. Technology, innovation and design in these areas has moved on at a rapid pace, in recent times, which has resulted in some quite inspirational design schemes. We have selected a number of projects all incredibly beautiful in their own way, yet diverse in their design interpretation and finished look, from traditional wooden kitchens with a new “take” to those considerably sleeker in form. And from bright and bold bathrooms, to dark and sensual schemes which ooze glamour.

Next issue we shall add another design book, to our publishing portfolio The World’s Leading Design Names 2015 is a collection of what we believe are some of the most influential and inspiring designers and architects working currently throughout the world on commercial and domestic projects, regeneration, aviation and yacht design. They will share with us their thoughts and feelings about design and architecture along with their vision for the future. The following month we publish another hardback issue, the annual copy of Style Bible A Book of Forecasts & Predictions 2015, a publication in which designers share their thoughts, design directions and recommendations for the year ahead. So, lots to look forward to. Until next month, Joanne

Sims Hilditch was set up in 1995 and reflects Design Director Emma Sims Hilditch’s love of design, architecture, art and entertaining. Her interiors are gracious, stylish and convivial. They combine a sense of theatre with a sympathetic use of colour, light and architectural detailing to bring drama, ease, glamour and comfort to every project. When Emma started her career she worked in film production with Ridley Scott. This was the foundation of her learning where she experienced set design on a grand scale. She quickly developed her project management skills as well as her love of light, colour and proportion. It was this theatrical background and artistic upbringing that created her signature style and led her to establish her own interior design practice.

“ Our aim was to preserve the patina of the past, whilst seamlessly mixing in a modern aesthetic to create a more comfortable and elegant family home.. ”

Sims Hilditch design elegant interiors that make everyday living comfortable, engaging and inspirational. Their boutique interior design practice based near Bath, has a small team of creative designers who work with the best architects, contractors and suppliers to design, decorate and refurbish residential and commercial properties. One such property is Foscote Manor, a stunning Grade II Listed Jacobean Estate in Buckinghamshire, surrounded by idyllic parkland. This project was successfully shortlisted for the Residential £1-2.5 Million (Project Value) Award at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014. Emma comments: “The ID&A Awards are hugely significant, to be shortlisted and considered alongside other leading Interior Designers and recognised by an International body is a huge honour. ” From contemporary spaces to traditional houses, for residential and commercial clients, Sims Hilditch provide interior design and project management services from the initial brief to the completed project. The design brief for Foscote Manor was to take a dark, austere property full of orange oak panelling, 80’s paint and wall finishes and an array of ugly interior features and transform it into a light and airy, elegant country home. Up to the minute home technology, power showers, a beautiful new kitchen and plenty of room for the clients 8 children to play were all high on the list of priorities.

As with all their heritage projects, Sims Hilditch wanted to celebrate the historic interior features of the property whilst carefully and respectfully updating the elements that were tired or outdated. “The house was in need of complete modernisation,” says Emma. “Our aim was to preserve the patina of the past, whilst seamlessly mixing in a modern aesthetic to create a more comfortable and elegant family home.” As with many of Sims Hilditch’s projects, the original kitchen was a worry from the start. Emma explains: “It seemed so small, split into two rooms and was out on a limb, but as it had only recently been installed our client was understandably reluctant to spend time and money here when there was so much work to be done elsewhere.” It was not until Sims Hilditch had worked on the project for over a year and the client had seen the metamorphosis of the rest of the house that it was agreed the kitchen needed an overhaul. Sims Hilditch set about designing a stunning and practical new Neptune kitchen suitable for such a large family to include 2 Sub Zero fridge freezers, 2 dishwashers, an Aga and a 3 metre long island with 10 bar stools. Overall, the main achievement of this project is in the way Sims Hilditch have managed to take 8,000sq foot of space and make it work as a comfortable family home; each room flowing seamlessly into the next and each space having its own character and identity. As a multidisciplinary team, Sims Hilditch combine sound project management with creative ideas, specialising in integrating architecture and interior design with traditional craftsmanship, elegant lighting and bespoke furniture design. Projects range from country hotels to riverside town houses. The team love working with clients to preserve the authenticity of the architecture, to enhance the character of the location and to reflect their clients’ lifestyle and needs. Over the next twelve months Sims Hilditch aim to grow their business, developing relationships with architectural practices and working on some exciting new projects, whilst maintaining their position as one of House and Gardens leading 100 Interior Design Practices.

Oleg Klodt’s interior design business was established in 1998, but his style is rooted deep in history. Stemming from the distinguished family Clodt von Jurgensburg, he creates interiors which look classic but are sufficiently flexible to change with the generations. At the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014, the architectureal bureau won the City Space Award with an apartment on Savvinskaya Embankment, Moscow. Oleg himself comments on their success: “We strongly believe that participating in the ID&A Awards helps us gather feedback from professionals and clients. Such events enable us to meet business leaders and share experience - they are a source of potential growth for us.”

“ We strongly believe that participating in the ID&A Awards helps us gather feedback from professionals and clients. Such events enable us to meet business leaders and share experience they are a source of potential growth for us. ”

Oleg Klodt launched the architectural practice shortly after he graduated from the Moscow Architectural Institute, and works on a variety of projects together with the bureau’s Lead Designer, Anna Agapova, from private apartments and homes, to hotels, restaurants and stores. “I create interiors in many different styles,” explains Oleg, “it all depends on what the client asks for. Even so, all of the projects we work on reflect the mainstream traditions of European and American interiors. I suppose my style is closest to New Classic – I aim for a consistent and understated style.”

with en-suite bathroom. Key suppliers for the project included And So To Bed, Baker, Porta Romana and Holly Hunt. A thorny problem when replanning the apartment was the partition which divided the living room from the grand dining room, as a television system, hi-fi system and fireplace had been fitted into it. Every detail of the interior was thought through immaculately – the panels, the portals, the built-in cabinets, the doors, the bed-head in the master bedroom – all designed by the architect, and created especially to order. The same approach was taken with the free-standing furniture. The table in the small dining-room, the children’s tables, the cabinet in the master bedroom, the wash-stand in the children’s bathroom are all craftsman-made bespoke pieces built especially for the client. The finest materials were deployed for the finishings with bird’s-eye maple used for the entrance to the bedroom. For the bedroom walls individually-made fabric panels were mounted, while the guest WC is decorated with four kinds of marble to designs made by Oleg Klodt. The living room floor is paneled in walnut, in a special configuration created by the architect. A special feature of this 300sqm apartment is the additional 150sqm terrace, for which fencing surrounds of metal and glass were installed based on the architect’s designs.

This winning project, which took one and a half years to complete, is an apartment for a family with two children in a new apartment building on Savvinskaya Embankment in Moscow. The apartment owner had visited another project completed by the design studio and decided that the interiors of his apartment needed to be remade in the distinctive Oleg Klodt style, with its characteristic calm sophistication and accustomed eclecticism. The client additionally asked the team to bear in mind all the needs of a large family with young children.

One of the reasons the design works so well is because the client gave the architect carte blanche, and didn’t try to steer the creative process. The style of the finished interiors reflects the typical Oleg Klodt methodology, but in this project they are taken to a new peak. “My direct inspiration in what I design is from what I see,” Oleg remarks. “London is a great inspiration for me – London adapts to contemporary life in its architecture, design, in a very particular way. It’s the same way that I try to adapt my interiors to people, to the existing space, and to the spirit of modernity.”

The property had originally been two adjacent apartments, with separate floorplans which the client had acquired and amalgamated, with one single entrance. The smaller of the two apartments eventually became the children’s half with a playroom, two children’s bedrooms, separate WC, and bathroom. The rest of the apartment comprises a large hall, kitchen, small dining room, grand dining room joined to the living room, and the master bedroom

Oleg Klodt Architectural Bureau is currently working on a large number of private residences, homes and apartments. “One of the most unusual projects I am working on at the moment”, Oleg tells us, “is a house interior realised in the Soviet Constructivist style of the early C20th.” Over the next twelve months Oleg wants to concentrate on more high quality work and is involved in launching his own range of designer furniture.

Principal and internationally acclaimed designer Allison Paladino of Palm Beachbased firm, Allison Paladino Interior Design, is known for creating exquisite residential interiors that exude a soft, modern elegance. With her refreshing twists on high elegance, Allison’s internationally recognised designs are characterised by classic style, beautiful woods, tactile materials and a hint of the exotic - often accented with an unexpected blending of multicultural artworks and antiques.

“ People are living today more casually and its great that this family can enjoy each others company whether in the kitchen, breakfast or family room because it is all one open space. ”

Hailed as one of the freshest faces on the design scene today, Allison achieved shortlist success at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014, with this Palm Beach Retreat kitchen design competing for the Kitchen over £100,000 Award. Allison comments: “The global recognition and exposure that will come with this award is outstanding for any design professional. Its a privilege to be a part of such a prestigious award.” The kitchen offers a bold linear design of black and white. At first glance the doors appear to be black but are actually a textured soft black that creates shading and a tactile contrast to the sleek white glass cabinetry. Floors are stained in a dark walnut and Allison designed a 7” thick cantilevered bar with great views for football games on the family room TV. Allison comments: “Most of my client’s kitchens are not used, because they are in Palm Beach to relax, have fun and go to the great restaurants the island has to offer!” Not your typical Palm Beacher’s, this family actually uses their kitchen. They wanted it to be practical so the team selected Ceasar Stone for all of the counter tops. This product works particularly well because it gives the clean sleek look of limestone but wears like granite. Clad with white cabinetry and stainless steel, the family can gather for casual meals at the breakfast bar, which was designed by Allison in collaboration with Leeds Custom Design.

The contrast between the white glass and dark textured cabinetry creates drama that can be seen from many angles of the house including the more formal areas. “People are living today more casually and its great that this family can enjoy each others company whether in the kitchen, breakfast or family room because it is all one open space,” explains Allison. Several people can prep at one time around the center island, another group can be at bar stools watching the TV in the family room and another group can be at the breakfast table. In the breakfast room the team chose a beautiful walnut table that actually expands to seat 12. The same cabinetry was continued into the breakfast room with a coffee station for a yummy cappuccino from the Meile coffee maker or other refreshments hidden in fridges and wine colours behind cabinetry. The Post Modern Rug, part of Allison’s Rug Collection with New River Artisans, creates warmth and a geometric design that relates to the space around it. The chandelier casts a warm light on Carolina Sardi’s Falling White, which is a custom piece personally installed by the artist made of enamel-on-steel pieces. The paint colour of the room was a collaboration between Allison and Sardi, chosen specifically to bring out the features of the piece. Prior to establishing her eponymous design firm in 1997, Allison spent four years under the tutelage of renowned designer Thomas Pheasant, where she was a key member of the interior design team. Well-recognised for excellence in residential and commercial interiors, Allison is also the creative force behind Allison Paladino Collections, her exclusive lines of licensed, luxury home furnishings designs. Inspired by her love of modernism, French Deco and the work of George Nakashima, the collections are designed by Allison and produced and distributed by leading high-end manufacturers, including furniture maker E.J. Victor, Rosembaum Fine Art and New River Artisans.

A Step Towards Timeless Design Chalet Kitchen, Austria by LINLEY

Design Et Al 43

The_November_Issue.indb 43

12/11/14 10:45:09

David Linley, founded his eponymous business in 1985 with the aim of designing and manufacturing furniture of the highest quality. Over the years David has worked closely with LINLEY designers and craftsmen to ensure that each piece has those quintessentially British characteristics of inventiveness, meticulous attention to detail, ingenuity, creative spirit, eccentricity, sophistication, wit and charm. At the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014, LINLEY’s project, Chalet Skyfall in St Christoph, Austria, won the Kitchen over £100,000 Award. David tells us about the importance of these awards within the industry: “Recognition of talent is the validation and motivation one needs to keep doing what we do, feedback whether in the form of awards or generally from clients is key to refining our approach.”

“ I feel design is moving away from specific trends towards timeless design. ” – David Linley, Chairman

For this project, completed in December 2013, LINLEY were asked to provide a kitchen in a private client’s chalet in the Austrian Tyrol. They had worked with LINLEY in the past and knew that the company had recently diversified into Fitted Cabinetry, incorporating Kitchens, Bedrooms, Media Rooms and Wine Rooms. Iain O’Mahony, who heads up the LINLEY Fitted Cabinetry division, comments: “LINLEY has been designing furniture since its inception 30 years ago. Offering the capacity to provide LINLEY built-in cabinetry has been a natural extension to the brand and its capabilities.” The brief was to fuse LINLEY’s quality cabinet-making with a contemporary kitchen design in order to complement the use of indigenous materials which characterise the interior of the chalet. Although a new-build, the exterior was designed to blend harmoniously with the surrounding architecture and landscape. “My two main sources of inspiration are from the architecture of the building and the governing style of our clients,” explains Iain. “We work collaboratively taking elements from either or both areas and combine this with the strong LINLEY design DNA to achieve the very best results.” A key instruction from the client was to incorporate reclaimed Austrian Stone Hearted Spruce which is used as a defining

accent in the rest of the chalet. Once selected, the timber was shipped back to the UK to the LINLEY workshop to the excitement of their makers who have never had to work with timber quite this ‘characterful’. The natural peculiarities of the material required incredibly careful selection and preparation. In collaboration with the client, it was reworked into this unique design before sending it back to Austria to be installed on site where it was then oilfinished with the grain enhanced by a secret blanching agent that the local joiners shared with the team. The paint on the additional furniture is a Farrow and Ball Charleston Grey. Locally supplied granite floors and Mystic Grey satino finished granite worktops add a cool contrast to the timber, whilst beaten copper splashbacks and glass and steel appliances bring razor-sharp, cool character to the space. Of-the-moment Gaggenau and Miele equipment is housed neatly within the units to allow for both elegant and sometimes robust entertaining. The overriding effect LINLEY have achieved is a subtle juxtaposition between the clean contemporary design and the faithful careworn reclaimed timbers. As this project demonstrates, a love of wood is an essential part of the culture at LINLEY. From paper thin veneers used in the marquetry inlays to the solid turned frames and table tops, from English oak to walnut and sycamore, wood is celebrated for its character, tactility and natural warmth. When we asked David Linley in what direction he feels design is moving towards in a general sense, he commented on the importance of this craftsmanship within an interior: “I feel design is moving away from specific trends towards timeless design,” David remarks. “Statement interiors as a whole are seen less frequently and statement pieces of furniture have taken their place to add intrigue to an interior. More so they need to be able to open the front door on their return and walk into a space which immediately feels like home.” LINLEY are currently working on commercial, residential and development projects in four continents, and we are told there are many fascinating things in the pipeline the team are looking forward to.

Smallbone of Devizes’ latest landmark collection embraces the kitchen as a social hub as well as a functional space. Smallbone is founded on a British craft tradition, which depends on the close relationship between client and maker. The company has been designing and making fine furniture in its Devizes workshops for over 35 years. In the process, it has revolutionised the form of kitchens, established enduring fashions and been instrumental in the kitchen’s metamorphosis from cooking space to social hub.

“ I wanted to create a kitchen that had a dual purpose, both as a social hub and a cooking environment. ”

This Brasserie Kitchen is a new lifestyle kitchen fusing traditional handcrafted techniques with a contemporary industrial feel. Taking its inspiration from the industrial world and the relaxed setting of the brasserie, Smallbone once again takes the lead in the move away from formal dining spaces to a more relaxed and atmospheric experience. At the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014, the project reached the shortlist for the Kitchen over £100,000 Award. Marketing Director Janet Wallace comments on Smallbone’s shortlist success: “The awards are very important not only to recognize the skills and talent but to inspire and drive forward creativity within the industry. It is also key for clients to see that we take pride in each commission to ensure it is unique, functional and beautiful.” The entire design of the kitchen has been carefully thought through, with ease of access to a range of appliances and workstations that work from every section of the kitchen regardless of which zone you are in. This enables multiple people to use the space at the same time. An oversized dresser with open shelving, deep top cabinets and glass sliding doors negates the need to move items from the worktop in order to open the cupboards. The use of long horizontal strips of pickled oak, chosen for its knots and character, emphasises the natural and beautiful variations in the timber and give it a modern twist that is both beautiful and functional.

“I wanted to create a kitchen that had a dual purpose, both as a social hub and a cooking environment,” explains designer Peter Sheppard. “I see the Smallbone of Devizes client using the kitchen daily, even if they are not cooking everyday in the space. It’s both atmospheric with a strong design element, as well as being practical and friendly at the same time.” Three islands of varying sizes each serve a different purpose within the space. There is a tepan plate and griddle, gas hob, and a prepping and entertaining space, replicating the more relaxed lifestyle of modern contemporary living. By combining different workstations, you can prep, chop, wash and cook while talking to family and friends. Every detail has been carefully considered from flat satin nickel plated tab handles on small drawers and u-shaped flat handles inspired by saucepan handles, to a stainless steel plate rack with square section bars and a moveable hostess trolley that has been re-interpreted for today’s lifestyle. Designed for today, Smallbone uses traditional techniques to create timeless kitchen designs for busy lifestyles, which suit both period and modern settings. Ingenuity and functionality are key to a Smallbone design. The team strives to create timeless cabinetry, with exquisite decorative detailing that is not only eye-catching, but which is also highly practical and durable. All of Smallbone’s furniture is made by hand, using the craft skills of its own joiners. The furniture features traditional joinery techniques such as dovetailing and mortise and tenon joints which will stand the test of time. The go-to company for developers who wish to offer their clientèle exclusive, custom-made kitchen interiors, its designs redefine luxury living. Smallbone’s team of skilled and experienced designers has created beautiful, multi-functional spaces for clients worldwide. Soul & Presence Sophia, Hadley Wood, UK by Marazzi Design

“A kitchen is for living in” – this is at the heart of Poalo Marazzi’s design philosophy. Poalo founded Marazzi Design in 1996 and, drawing on his Italian heritage and passion for design coupled with a love of food and cooking, he perfected the art of creating stylish, ergonomic kitchens that are not just design statements but are functional, stylish, and convivially designed“. Poalo believes that the kitchen should be at the centre of the home, a place to chop and chat and interact. “A kitchen should have soul and presence, stirring the emotions, enhancing family life and convivial living, making the kitchen area into the heart and soul of the home,” he explains.

“ A kitchen should have soul and presence, stirring the emotions, enhancing family life and convivial living, making the kitchen area into the heart and soul of the home ”

The design brief for this project, Sophia, was to create a kitchen which was modern and striking, and had a real “wow factor”. A refurbishment of a Grade II listed Victorian manor house in Hadley Wood, the design also had to be ergonomic, functional, and embrace the need for entertaining with family and friends. Paolo remarks: “The room was an awkward shape, with a large central chimney breast to the east wall, which created narrow deep alcoves to the sides, along with a wall section which had to remain; this left the area feeling uninspiring and disproportionate for the size of house.” Rather than trying to follow the walls, the fluid nature of the kitchen design shrouds the corners and meanders out to the adjoining room. This creates a larger working footprint which, in turn, allows for a larger, more proportional, kitchen design. The five meter island curves and interacts in unison with the curves on the window wall, ebbing and flowing with a constant gap, making the island the focus of the room. The seamless composite worktops also help emphasise the flowing movement of the furniture. A mica glass bar; backlit and floating from the island worktop, adds glamour and allure, mirroring the glass backsplash. Feature lighting illuminates the traditional coving and ceiling bulkhead. The appliances are both functional and complementary to the design, which include two Miele 900 ovens, coffee machine, steam oven, induction hobs along with wine cooler, sub-zero fridge freezer and a Zip boiling/ chilled filtered tap. The style of the kitchen is clean and sleek

lines, softening the entire room, and fusing with its traditional setting. Poalo comments: “Conventional thinking in current contemporary, modern kitchen design, relies on linear clinical blocks, it becomes simply too restrictive and sometimes uninviting, a barrier to convivial living and design. Marazzi Design kitchens are inspired by organic shapes, natural fluidity and convivial living.” The Metallic Graphite/ Grey gloss hand lacquered finish animates the curvature on the bespoke furniture, changing colour as you move around the kitchen. The design eliminates all of the alcoves and corners within an awkward shaped room, and with flowing lines merges two rooms into one. The constant curving movement of the furniture is key to the project and in fact the only straight lines in this space are to house the ovens and integrated fridge freezer - even the dishwasher has been integrated into the curved furniture. Marazzi Design creates bespoke kitchens in a different dimension: stunning and statuesque, creative and curvaceous. Poalo Marazzi’s passion for design has fashioned a uniquely identifiable style, a fusion of modern and classical influences, creating original design concepts, and has compiled a library of outstanding and inspired work. His philosophy is to understand artisan’s techniques of the past, and to reinterpret them using the latest technology and modern day engineering. Due to the bespoke nature of their work, Marazzi Design create around thirty limited edition, su misura kitchens a year. The starting point is an in-depth consultation, to discuss and formalise the design brief. After the client has approved the design, every cabinet and surface is crafted using artisan skills and the best of modern technology. Because the kitchens are 100% customised, you can specify whatever you desire and Marazzi can easily work within any room size. The result will be a stunning su misura, tailor-made showpiece. Marazzi Design achieved success with Sophia in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014, with the project shortlisted for the Kitchen over £100,000 Award. Poalo comments: “design et al is a very wellrespected and influential magazine within the architectural and design community, so the awards are greatly valued.”

Accentuating Natural Beauty Victorian Villa, London by Cochrane Design

12/11/14 10:46:58

Situated on Clapham common west side, this kitchen is part of a beautiful Victorian Villa. The highly acclaimed Sean Cochrane Design redeveloped the entire 9,500 sq ft of the property. Cochrane Design performed an outstanding feat at this year’s International Design & Architecture Awards by claiming the Awards for the Bathroom and Kitchen over 25k categories. This Victorian villa kitchen also garnered excellent recognition as a shortlist project in the Kitchen over 50k category.

“ The marble splash back is a stunning example of pattern matching creating a butterfly effect that accentuates its already incredible natural beauty. ”

The brief for the kitchen was that it needed to be suitable for socialising in large numbers. The client required this space to be as welcoming and relaxing as the other living spaces in the house. After being stripped back to the brickwork, the room has been redesigned using a mix of original features including elaborate cornicing and panelling. Far from being a restoration project, the design has restored the elegance of the property’s heritage but the layout of the pillar less room is contemporary in its execution. The main kitchen’s impressive scale makes it the undoubted hub of the home. On entry you are immediately aware of the exceptional craftsmanship and materials that have been carefully selected to create this kitchen. Three floor-to-ceiling French doors flood the room with natural light and in the summer months entertaining can spill out onto the terrace of the landscaped garden. The different zones have been carefully planned flowing seamlessly from one to another. Informal dining and a relaxed lounge area share the space equally. Floor to ceiling cabinets and hanging lights frame the nine metre split level Marble Island with built in sinks and units and a breakfast bar at both ends. The marble splash back is a stunning example of pattern matching creating a butterfly effect that

accentuates its already incredible natural beauty. It looks more like a work of art than a practical feature. The bespoke cabinetry houses a kitchen that would satisfy even the most demanding chefs, with state of the art appliances and a plethora of kitchen gadgetry to aid all manner of creations. With furniture pieces from The Sofa & Chair Company, the cabinetry and stonework has been specifically commissioned and designed by Sean Cochrane. The style of the kitchen mirrors the easy elegance of the rest of the home. The exacting standards applied here is the distinct trademark of Cochrane Designs. This kitchen allows one to experience luxury that has been thoughtfully considered in every detail. The design and execution of this kitchen evokes quality, style and substance. “The ID&A Awards are highly important in promoting a designer’s talents,” added Sean – believing that this exposure is key to building a reputation: “Recognition and respect is gained from peers and this type of exposure opens door to a wide and strong client base.” Cochrane Design is currently working on a number of interesting projects in Mayfair. This also includes a complete reconfiguration and refurbishment of a substantial town house in a classic, timeless style with a hint of art deco. Sean added: “Additionally we are working on phase two of a large luxurious hotel refurbishment in Ibiza. Last but not least we are at the finishing stages of the complete restoration of a majestic Victorian family home in Essex.” As a leading design practice specialising in exclusive properties, Cochrane Design is aiming to focus more on hotel designs and multi-unit developments in the near future. Creative Director and founder, Sean Cochrane, is often featured in the UK interiors press and is the UK contributing editor of Habitat magazine in South Africa.

As an unrivalled retreat to escape and unwind, this luxurious bathroom transports you into a different realm of relaxation. The design is the exclusive work of interior designer company and bathroom specialists Charlotte Conway Design. This private residence garnered outstanding recognition as a shortlisted project in the Bathroom category at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014. The event, which was held at the world renowned Hurlingham Club in London saw leading designers fly in from across the globe. This unique bathroom is situated in the client’s main home - a Victorian property in Clapham, London. With a goal to create a luxurious and inviting space, the design takes inspiration from the client’s desire for a ski lodge atmosphere or a Bali spa.

“ My client said to me when the bathroom was completed; ‘I like to open the door and feel transported to another world.’ My job was complete. ” – Charlotte Conway, Director

The bathroom features dark and dramatic spaces and is also highly practical, as it is the only bathroom in the property. The innovative design functions well and utilises the space, despite its unconventional shape. Charlotte Conway – director of the UK-based company, is delighted with the effect of the elements integrated into the design. She added: “The Samuel Heath Country Bronze brassware, really sets off this bathroom, against the dark textured wood effect porcelain tiles, and pebble mosaics. If chrome had been used, it would have killed the calm and complimentary tones.” The client had a genuine desire for natural materials, which is always present in ski lodges and Bali spas. Although Charlotte admits wooden clad walls may not have been practical for this project, the innovative use of porcelain wood grain tiles enabled her to champion this design. By introducing the granite washbowl, solid teak unit, and pebble mosaics, I was able to combine many textures and tone, and even better, were all natural products, plus they were all either waterproof or durable, perfect for a bathroom. The dark colours create drama, as the tone

and texture play with the reflective surfaces, illuminated by the stunning wall lights, and mood lighting beneath the vanity unit and bath. The lighting has been carefully considered to allow a moody scheme. The metal Strip wall sconces mounted onto the mirror create the soft ambiance, and overall the lighting highlights the natural textures. The preformed made to measure bath allowed Charlotte to change the layout of the room, creating a more inviting space. It perfectly fits the smaller-than-standard space, and was clad in the pebble mosaics, to prevent a bright white bath being specified, which again would have completely changed ambience. The use of pebbles within the shower and bath area was to create a feeling of being in the natural outdoors whilst showering. Once the rainshower head is on, the stress of the day in the busy capital city, are washed away. Charlotted added: “My client said to me when the bathroom was completed; ‘I like to open the door and feel transported to another world.’ My job was complete.” Highlighting the opportunity to learn from the ID&A Awards, Charlotte said: “It is very important to see the range of skills and diverse creativity between designers and architects, we can all learn from one another and be inspired. The fact that ID&A Awards is not held for profit allows the entries to be considered in a fair manner, rather than influenced by manufacturers specified.” The upcoming year for Charlotte Conway Design will see a very busy schedule working on a number of residential projects across the United Kingdom. Some of these projects include a barn renovation in Staffordshire, a modern new build with swimming pool in the West Midlands, a full house renovation in Hertfordshire and Chelsea as well as a Victorian renovation in the West Midlands. As a young and dynamic designer, Charlotte Conway is a specialist in bespoke luxury bathrooms. With her work spanning across the United Kingdom, Charlotte’s innovative touch can be found in some of the most glamorous homes and boutique hotels.

This London property features an innately feminine bathroom with a seductive oyster shell palette, stunning mother of pearl inlays and super generous hidden storage. Behind this fabulous design is the award-winning interior design company Hill House Interiors. As a shortlisted project at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014, this unique deisgn was an excellent contender in the Bathroom category. Held at London’s Hurlingham Club in September, the event was a fabulous occasion featuring the most innovative projects from across the globe.

“ The design message clearly conveys this is a room for a person who adores and appreciates the more romantic elements of contemporary style, liberally shot with some good old fashioned vintage glamour. ”

Helen Bygraves, co-founder of Hill House Interiors, together with her talented team, created this stunning super-size bathroom to complement the adjoining bedroom and dressing room, part of a fabulous Master suite in Helen’s beautiful new home. Superbly sleek, with THG’s iconic Blade taps, a Gessi shower system, polished Perla Beige marble, and an abundance of storage hidden within elegant bespoke cabinetry. The design message clearly conveys this is a room for a person who adores and appreciates the more romantic elements of contemporary style, liberally shot with some good old fashioned vintage glamour. The mother of pearl mosaic and polished chrome geometric inlays, applied to the double vanity unit and bath panel, which link cleverly to the full height mosaic wall in the giant walk in shower enclosure. It is truly a luxurious space to relax in the bath enjoying drink whilst becoming captivated in a classic picture playing on the Aqua TV. Although definitely seeking to be the showstopper of all the superb bathrooms in Helen’s new home, this design for the Master Suite has satisfied the demands of a busy but organized individual. The intelligently planned but discreetly invisible storage houses not just towels, toiletries and cleaning materials, but also a very comprehensive cosmetic and beauty collection. The generously sized wall mirrors and excellent directional lighting installed by John Cullen makes this room work as a one stop shop for a person who likes to surround herself with both comfort and style, but in a

practical, time saving environment. As one of the leading interior design studios in the United Kingdom, Hill House Interiors have competed in the ID&A Awards on several occasions. For company founders Helen Bygraves and Jenny Weiss, the Awards hosted by design et al are always a firm favourite in the calendar year. Due to the high standards and creativity required to enter, it demonstrates that the successfully shortlisted companies go the extra mile and have not gone unnoticed by the discerning panel of judges. Helen added: “We consider them to be extremely important. They encourage healthy competition, which improves design standards. This must be a good thing. The atmosphere as well as good-natured support from fellow designers was a highlight for Jenny: “We noticed a real buzz around the awards last year, throughout the industry – which is fabulous. When we spoke to other designers, they told us they had voted for our schemes – now that really is a great accolade!” In the UK – Hill House is currently working on a diverse range of projects. Some of the mentioned projects by Jenny and Helen includes a Penthouse in Belgravia, a plethora of private residences in Central London and several large country mansions in Surrey, Kent & Essex. The London-based company is also working on a boutique hotel in Cornwall and show schemes for top end developers. Jenny and Helen are also undertaking exciting projects abroad. Helen added: We have some fabulous projects overseas – from private estates to exclusive restaurants. Working abroad is always challenging but interesting as you can really draw on inspiration from the landscapes and culture.” Hill House Interiors are an award-winning design consultancy renowned for their friendly, approachable attitude and meticulous attention to detail. They take pride in every commission in the UK or abroad whether the client is a leading developer in the luxury housing sector or a private individual.

Situated in Beverly Hills, California – Mulholland is an exquisite property designed by the internationally renowned Kari Whitman Interiors. The LA-based company was recognised for this excellent project at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014. Mulholland was a shortlisted finalist in the Residential £2.5-£5Million (project value). The primary occupant – a 21-year old member of a royal family and student at a nearby university, asked Whitman to create a place with a “masculine vibe” where he could relax and entertain friends.

“ Creating an upscale, modern kitchen was just one of a myriad of spaces. The transformation started at the entrance, where Kari created a floating entry that enables visitors to walk on water. ”

As a year-and-a-half long project, Mulholland required extensive interior and exterior construction, including moving a shear wall. “I like to take on big projects.” Whitman acknowledges. “I usually don’t take on just one room unless its something like an elaborate kitchen.” Creating an upscale, modern kitchen was just one of a myriad of spaces. The transformation started at the entrance, where Kari created a floating entry that enables visitors to walk on water. A stepping stone path spans a cobalt blue mosaic pool made from recycled glass and leads to a 10-foot-tall, custom-built front door from New City Door. Inside the entry hall, two illuminated, 500-pound slabs of onyx were installed.

at Habite, a Los Angeles store that specialises in antique furnishings. The adjoining formal dinging room, which Whitman considers to be the residence’s masterpiece features “window walls” crafted from 3,000 small pieces of recycled wood. The elegant, peek- throughs add privacy to the room, while letting in natural light and enables the homeowner to enjoy the stunning outdoor views. A sleek, rectangular light fixture from Donghia Inc. complements the peek-throughs’ geometric design. “For most people, part of the appeal of living in southern California is being able to dine and entertain outdoors most of the year,” added Kari. Her client was no exception, whereby large folding doors on one side were installed of the kitchen to provide easy access to the outdoor living area. The garden is a beautiful space with all the amenities one could ask for in a Beverly Hills property. This outdoor area features a recycled, glass mosaic water wall, a fire pit, kitchen and dining areas, and a luxurious custom-made swimming pool. To make the outdoor living spaces even more eco friendly, Whitman installed ProLawn synthetic turf on the south side of the home to save water and eliminate the need for pesticides. She also selected plant material that will thrive in southern California’s climate – handpicking every single tree.

Whitman also created a chic powder room featuring walls clad in 9 x 12 in. silver-leaf backed glass tiles from Ann Sacks Tile & Stone and an exofriendly high-efficiency toilet from TOTO USA. The Designer used neutral-colored faux leather and Ultrasuede® fabric on walls and custom furniture to give the spacious living room a masculine, yet warm and inviting, aura.

Accordingly to Kari, it is important that creativity is awarded as it encourages designers to improve further in their work: “Creativity should never be unrecognised regardless of the magnitude. Awards stimulate artist to expand their originality and increases productivity. This is why the International Design & Architecture Awards are so important.”

Metallic cork wallpaper from Astek Inc., a large geometric patterned area rug from è bella and a custom light box from Fire Farm Lighting further enhances the room’s masculine feel as does a vintage, rolling cargo door that opens to reveal the library. Whitman discovered the 1950’s airplane relic

Kari founded Kari Whitman Interiors – in 1994 as a full-service firm specialising in high-end residential interior design. Kari’s expertise extends into commercial interior design, and projects range from condominiums to estate homes, boutique hotels to largescale residential developments.

Keemala, Thailand Shortlisted for the Hotel under 50 Rooms Award (Asia-Pacific) design et al are pleased to announce shortlist success for Keemala in the International Hotel & Property Awards 2015. Competing for the Hotel under 50 Rooms Award (Asia-Pacific), Keemala is an ethereal wonderland comprising 38 distinctively designed pool villas set in the rainforest in Phuket, Thailand. Inspired by the location’s natural surroundings and to innovate a unique hotel design for Thailand, the design reflects the tales of 4 fictitious tribes that united to form a village called Keemala. The villas, public areas, bridge,

path and sculptures are inspired from nature e.g. forms of flowers, bird’s nests and symbolising the items of the local people’s way of life e.g. fishing tools, animal skins/textures (synthetic) and a humble chicken coup. Fixtures and furniture are being in the most part sourced from within communities in Thailand and hand made using local and traditional methods. Wherever possible the design is environmentally sustainable and the construction complements the surrounding ecosystem rather than demolish and create a man made surrounding. The majority of the building materials are natural products, and resources found on site have been recycled. Materials also use artificial products that have natural forms (or

partly made of natural product). The ‘Clay Pool Cottages’ reflect the earth clan who were farmers. Clay, straw and ceramics feature. The wanderer tribe excelled in hunting and trading, and inspired the ‘Tent Pool Cottages’. The ‘Tree Pool Houses’ represent the sky clan who chose to live suspended from the trees. This accommodation category uses building techniques to give the impression that the tree houses are hanging from the trees; some furniture inside the cocoons is hung from the ceiling. The nest community inspired the design of the ‘Bird’s Nest Pool Villas’. This group enjoyed an opulent way of life. www.keemala.com

Shortlisted: ShellShock Designs for Stirling & Co Designs in the IY&A Awards 2015 ShellShock Designs for Stirling & Co Designs have been successfully shortlisted in the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015. GALAXY, designed by Stirling & Co Designs with feature marble by ShellShock Designs, will compete for the Power Yacht Refit over 30 metres Award. This project is a comprehensive refit of the interior accommodation with modifications to the exterior to give a 5 star charter experience. The new owner of GALAXY wanted to build on her successful charter reputation by injecting a bright, fresh, youthful and contemporary spirit into her original high gloss timber interior. The new design was conceived to give her a new identity with a less formal interior suited to a younger and more relaxed lifestyle for groups of friends but doubling as a chic party vessel for high profile events. As well as providing a neutral backdrop for his 20th Century art collection, the owner felt

the calm sophisticated atmosphere needed dramatic focal features to offset the rich monochromatic textured surfaces. The design concept adopted the approach of inserting new features into the existing interior to add both interest and functionality. New white marmorino window surrounds in all areas complemented the existing maple and walnut while reflecting natural light into the interior. New inbuilt window seats maximise connection with the water giving panoramic views out. A new internally lit onyx bar on the main deck provides a new meeting point for guests (as well as a discrete host station for crew during parties) offset by an astonishing eyecatching backlit black agate wall behind the new dining table. The observation lounge was re-orientated to look out – not in – and provide a haven of tranquility that can be transformed into a private cinema at the touch of a button. Anderson Miller Ltd Compete For The Hotel over 200 Rooms Award (Americas) design et al are delighted to announce shortlist success for Anderson Miller Ltd in the International Hotel & Property Awards 2015. The Four Seasons Orlando will compete for the Hotel over 200 Rooms Award (Americas) in the fifth annual awards. The 443 room luxury resort hotel design recalls aesthetics of Mediterranean Revival architecture and is inspired by the style of Addison Mizner, the Architect largely responsible for the classic charm of historic Palm Beach and an aesthetic suited to the subtropical sun and climate of Florida. The hotel interior features a contemporary interpretation of historical imagery. Vaulted Venetian plaster ceilings and limestone walls and floor slabs greet the guests upon arrival and create the lobby and reception spaces. The grand stair is accented with a whimsical crystal display reminiscent of fireworks and a custom iron

railing of interlocking rings, a motif that is recalled in the bronze plaster curved wall panels behind the front desk as well as the wallcovering in the guestroom corridors. A traditional octagonal pattern borrowed from some of the Mizner homes first appears on the upper portion of the lobby shadowing the pathway through the hotel. The octagonal pattern is repeated in macro scale on the ballroom ceiling and prominently on the white patterned stone highlighting the bathtub in the typical guestrooms. On a micro scale, the octagonal pattern appears on some of the light fixtures, most notably the guestroom pendant, as well as carpet patterns and elevator cabs. Contemporary furnishings and finishes provide a classic backdrop throughout the property. Mosaic patterns, a mainstay of Spanish Revival style, are evident throughout. The use of glass in lieu of more traditional stone provides a fresh direction to the design. www.andersonmiller.com

Shortlist Success for VOA Architecture Design VOA Architecture Design have been successfully Shortlisted for the International Hotel & Property Awards 2015. Their project ‘Shanghai Mingjie Renaissance Hotel’ has gained a spot in the Asia-Pacific Hotel over 200 Rooms category. A 5 star Renaissance Hotel of 35,000 sm with three restaurants, ballroom and conference centre, spa, fitness and executive lounge. The Hotel interiors are inspired by the winds that traditionally and literally have brought foreign travellers and trade to China. Upon entering the Hotel, the guests are swept past the curved stairs and water feature towards reception and then pulled into the lobby via the swirling curves of the ceiling and floor patterns. Reminiscent of treacherous water spouts and small peaceful water eddies where guests can find a spot to rest. The swirling winds terminate in a cyclone crystal chandelier that lands on the lobby bar. This design story is then consistently told throughout the hotel from Elevator lobbies to the Conference and Executive Centres and into the rooms and suites. www.voa.com

Shortlisted: Simone Micheli Architectural Hero for the Hotel Over 200 Rooms Award (Europe) design et al are delighted to announce shortlist success in the International Hotel & Property Awards 2015 for Simone Micheli Architectural Hero. The Barcelò Milan will compete for the Hotel over 200 Rooms Award (Europe). Barcelò Milan is the three-dimensional manifesto of the possible union between architecture and sensitivity; going over aesthetic canons, it tells the story of the everyday experience that becomes the active memory which drives men. Forget all obsolete definitions of ‘business hotel’, Barcelò Milan – a hybrid place, full of synesthetic contaminations – rewrites canons for hotels of the future. The Barcelò Milan interiors are conceived as pieces of architecture inside an architecture; spaces, lights and colours are interconnected in order to generate content and linguistic innovation. Common areas are re-designed, hybridising spaces, by the contamination of functions to meet all kinds of guests’

needs; phytomorphic sculptures constitute the structural apparatus of the ground floor and all the furniture avoids conventional geometry. Relaxing islands are created by the contrast among acid greens and bright reds with the Luserna stone floor. On the first floor the atmosphere is welcoming and serene: the wallpaper becomes a relaxing kaleidoscope and birch trees arise from the ground to the ceiling, making tones natural and harmonious. A super spa is located on the second floor: it is an organic, vibrant, interactive space where everything is strongly characterised: yellow fluid forms looks like macro anemones which rise up from the ground or hang down from the ceiling, creating waterfalls. In ergonomic rooms lilac walls contrast with those in wood that, rising from the floor, characterise the bed head and wrap the whole bathroom. The shower wrapped in a curtain of shaded glass becomes the visual fulcrum of the room, freeing itself from the slavery of bathroom walls. A tongue-mirror iconically defines the place of regeneration and physical well-being. www.simonemicheli.com

5 Minutes with Tim Gosling Company Position within company Website

Tell us a little about your background in design I trained at Central /St Martins in Theatre Design, after graduating I worked on the set design for Musicals such as Miss Saigon before teaming up with David Linley and creating Bespoke Furniture as a Partner for 18 years. How would you describe your personal interior design style? The idea of creating a sense of theatre in a stage production or as an interior are the same – starting with the lighting as a crucial element and then working out what kind of feel you want to create with the furniture, the architecture and the detailing. My overall design style is based fundamentally in history, understanding the rules of the past in order to re interpret them in a new way for the buildings and the life styles of today. Where does your design inspiration come from? I collect a vast amount of books from the 18/ 19 and 20th Century, I spend a large amount of time absorbing historic understanding of detailing. I also am always on the look out for brilliant craftsmanship – specialist in all kinds of things. I feel that gives me a great sense of inspiration – learning how something was made, the hours taken to achieve something. In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense? We have never had a period like this – a time when all styles and design are open to us at any one moment across the world. We can type into the Internet and literally find anything we want at the touch of a button – The only thing holding us back is WHAT you looking for. I believe design is splitting into two sections – those who are now specifying objects that are readily available anywhere in the world – and those designers that actual are interested in spending time creating these objects with craftsmanship and integrity. Looking back on this time I think you will see

a design movement along the lines of Ultra Exclusive Craftsmanship. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2014 and beyond. Longevity is crucial as it ties directly into the highest level of quality, it also means that the pieces and work will last thus giving you the best ‘green‘ policy ever – I always suggest that whatever you buy, do so at the best level of quality as you will have it for generations. If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to product design, what would it be? Understanding how something is created is the key to understanding how to design into the product – knowing the rules of creating the item so you can break them. How important are The International Product Design Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? I think for anyone in design, to have a sense of recognition is always a positive thing. I also believe that the IPD awards pulls the design world together as a community – it’s wonderful to come together to celebrate our successes. What projects are you currently working on? We are lucky enough to be working on a Palazzo in Venice, a Carbon Fibre Super Yacht, an Elizabethan listed building in Leicestershire, a rather wonderful Queen Anns House in St James Park in London and numerous other individual pieces of bespoke furniture. What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months? I am currently writing my third book published by Thames and Hudson, Spring 2015.

This tropical house is an expansive, open plan property based in Singapore and features interior design by Design Intervention. Founded by Nikki Hunt in 2004, the design studio is also based in Singapore and has an outstanding reputation for diverse and innovative projects. With no exception – the tropical house was shortlisted in three categories at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2014. The Hurlingham Club was a spectacular venue for the ceremony in September, which witnessed the world’s most talented designers under one roof for one night only. The key design challenge for this home was to find the fine balance necessary to fill the large rooms without cluttering the space and detract from the outside views. The interiors were kept simple to allow the vista to be the major visual element. The client highlighted the importance of having a home with personality and life. Design Intervention achieved both of these goals simultaneously.

“ The client highlighted the importance of having a home with personality and life. Design Intervention achieved both of these goals simultaneously. ”

This was to be, first and foremost, a family home, full of life and fun. This client wanted a relaxing, welcoming, and comfortable property – a place where they could really feel at home. The beauty of the property was the lush verdant views. The garden view is a flagship feature of the home. The client is a keen cook and the desired space to entertain in an informal relaxed style. Therefore a significant portion of the floor space was to be allocated to a kitchen and family space. The whole room evokes a feeling of easy, relaxed living. For the master bedroom, the client requested a cheerful and warm room full of life with a dash of colonial undertones and a study with the sense of a classic English library. The client has two teenage daughters and wanted rooms that reflected their youth and personalities. The entrance sets the tone of the home. The stonewall suggests a sense of permanence and reliability, complementing the strong lines of the art piece. The art is hung on a mirrored panel and the profile of the console has been kept sleek to allow the painting to take centre stage - unfettered. On closer inspection, you can see the bespoke wall sconces formed in polished stainless steel. Their lines, too are solid and strong. They almost disappear against the mirror panel yet belie the subtle attention to detail that runs throughout this home. The artwork is

bold, bright and colourful. The wild boar adds a touch of the light-hearted. The rug and candles soften the hard lines. These accents work together to create a friendly feel, welcoming you into the space. The glimpse of the piano, invokes images of fun family gatherings and the collection of photos reinforce the idea that this is first and foremost a family home. Solid elements work together to imbue a sense of permanence as if the home would always be there as a refuge to return to at the end of each day – a true haven from a frenetic city life. As a shortlist company with this tropical house at the ID&A Awards, Nikki believes the Awards have a profound effect, ensuring that standards are raised and a healthy competition is instilled throughout the industry: “The ID&A Awards play a critical role in raising industry standards.” She added: “They inspire design professional to strive for new, fresh ideas and higher standards of workmanship. Celebrating excellence motivates and drives the competitive spirit in us all, resulting in the pursuit of excellence and ever-higher standards.” Design Intervention can disclose that they are currently focussing their efforts on three luxury projects in Asia: a penthouse in Singapore, a bungalow in Sentosa and a ski resort in Niseko, Japan. Speaking to Nikki about her goals for the coming year, Design Intervention is hoping to launch a series of bespoke furniture. She added: “We plan to officially launch our Signature series of in-house furniture designs for purchase online. We have found that in this globalised world, the same, wellknown pieces are available to everyone all over the world. Whilst they may be lovely pieces, this means that it is increasing difficult to personalise our homes. At Design Intervention, we have been designing our own pieces to give a unique signature to our projects. We have put together a collection of our favourite designs, which will be available to purchase on line later this year.” Based in Singapore, Design Intervention comprises interior designers, architects, stylists, Interior architects and project managers. The cultured team of 24 people is made up of 12 different nationalities each bringing their own unique experience to Design Intervention ensuring projects resonate a global prospective.
