STYLE BIBLE Style Bible was our very first hard back annual design book and has been in publication now for over a decade and still remains one of our key issues of the year. However, like all titles from time to time, it requires a bit of a re-think and reformat, so this year we have added to its contents.

As always we have spoken with key designers in all sectors of the luxury design sector, those who work at the pinnacle of the design market. They talk candidly about their hope and vision for 2022, share their advice, inspiration and forthcoming plans. However this year, we have also taken the time to speak to another group who are also changing the face of the design world: the people who run some of the most endorsed companies in this sector. The people whose vision and foresight enables the designers to create truly inspiring schemes. We feel it is important to be inclusive within this title and connect the designer and architects with the individuals who enable such incredible schemes to be created. These are the visionaries who predict, create, design and produce, thereby enabling the pages of magazines, book, digital news and three dimension reality to be so inspiring.

Of course Style Bible would not be complete any year without the key products, collections and pieces that we endorse as a title. So our recommended collections for 2022 are featured here too.

We enter 2022 with hope, optimism and a true sense of solidarity that we in the design world will once again work together, to strive, support and succeed. The past 24 months may have been challenging for the world, but we continue to grow together in strength and resolution and to change the planet one design scheme one scheme at a time.

Atelier Interior Design is an award winning interior architectural design consultancy specialising in luxury Interior design, founded by design duo Victor Branco and James Fairley.

With different academic backgrounds and life paths, Victor and James came together to form the core of Atelier Interior Design in 2014. Architecture, interiors, contemporary art, music, cinema and fashion are part of the daily life of this design duo and they provide them inspiration, revealed in the everyday live settings they create. Tell us a little about your background in design: James studied Architecture at the Queens University Belfast and The Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow where he completed his Masters in Architecture before working in commercial practice in Switzerland, Malaysia and the UK for 15 years.

Victor was born in Mozambique where he spent his childhood, before moving to Portugal in his teens. After completing a degree in Fine Art at ESAD Caldas Rainha – Lisbon, Victor moved to the UK in 2001 to study Interior Architecture at the Belfast School of Architecture and Built Environment at The University of Ulster, graduating with a 1st class BA honours in 3D Design (Product, Furniture and Interior Design). Following his degree Victor lectured in Interior Design before establishing Atelier Interior Design with James.

How would you describe your design style?

Our design style is eclectic and modern with a nod to luxury.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

Primarily we take inspiration from our clients’ lifestyles, aspirations and personalities which we then translate into a well-designed interior. Each project is as unique as our clients.

Secondly, we take inspiration from our travels. We visit the major international design fairs annually where we absorb upcoming world design trends. These trips are a vital source of design inspiration for our project work as we always strive to deliver the highest level of design with the most up to date ranges of products.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

We are definitely seeing a major shift away from the minimalist design approach toward a richer, more layered ‘maximalist’ aesthetic. Eclectic and layered interiors with a nod of luxury are really coming into their own. The concept of luxury has also been shifting away from large recognisable international design brands towards a more bespoke, custom-made design approach

which focuses on individuality and beautifully handcrafted products. Detail and craftsmanship are the ultimate luxury! We pride ourselves in crafting each of our interior projects to fit our clients brief and sense of individuality. Our projects combine a meticulous detail driven approach, the result is exceptional luxury that is elegant, tailored and timeless. Our skilled team of interior designers and craftsmen design and create stunning custom made furniture, lighting and cabinetry for nearly all our projects. This allows us to offer a highly personalised design service to our clients.

Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2022 and beyond.

Sculptural Cocooning Furniture, Post-modernism, hearty and grounded shades with natural textures, the Maximalism movement and Textured walls from plaster to wall relieves.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

Always listen to your client. Understand their lifestyle in order to help design a space that is beautiful, functional and that reflects their personality and way of living.

How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?

The International Design Awards are of upmost importance within the industry as they give recognition to the continued hard work and creative talents of designers across the world.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?

Our well stocked design library and the relationships we have built up over the years with our exceptional team of skilled crafts people.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

We have a number of exciting new projects in the pipeline which we can’t wait to share with the world!

Where were you born/ where did you grow up?

I was born and grew up in Romania. I moved to Canada at 21 years old, and after living in a number of provinces and cities (Regina, Vancouver, Thunder Bay, Waterloo), in 1996 I’ve settled in Toronto.

That’s where I’ve opened my interior design practice in 2000.

Please explain your relevant training/ work experience?

Having studied architecture and design on two continents the merging of cultural, aesthetic, and pragmatic approaches offered a well-rounded and unique design upbringing. Coupled with an education in art, textiles, architectural history, and iconography, the extensive visual and cross-disciplinary knowledge has allowed me to develop a unique design language for an enriched lifestyle.

Please describe the highlight of your career to date.

Every project that I complete where I achieve a perfect symbiosis of aesthetics and design flow feels like an immense accomplishment and the highest success.

How did achieving this make you feel?

It is empowering, and it fuels the enthusiasm of moving ahead with the next one.

Where do you find inspiration for your work?

Art, architecture, travels, people, history and tradition, habits and patterns of living How do you relax and find your work/ life balance?

Through daily, constant time balance and adjusting. I’ve mastered the skill of partitioning my days, almost without exception, into morcels of activities of all kinds. I rarely spend a full day working or a full day in leisure. By ensuring that I fragment my days and that even on busiest days I carve out time to pursue my passions and hobby activities, it is rare that work becomes so overwhelming that I need full breaks. The flow is balanced and I enjoy all days as opposed to carving for the leisure ones.

What project(s) are you currently working on?

I am currently working on a number of multi-unit high-rise condominium buildings together with a number of new luxury private residences.

How would you describe your work/design style /ethos?

All my designs are stories of an impeccable lifestyle, a lifestyle that celebrates self-confidence, personal idiosyncrasies, and the finer things in life. We build for the modern, urban individual, cosmopolitan and educated, open-minded and inclusive.

How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/ life?

Individuality, self-esteem, and confidence are at the basis of a new way of living. Positivity, self-awareness, flexibility, and adaptability will be expressed in interior design thru bold aesthetics, attention to detail, and high regard for the quality of the space we occupy.

How do you predict the pandemic will change the global design sector?

We will see an increase in the importance of interior design as a tool to control and maintain a healthy body and mind. The connection between health and our homes will establish itself not only through materials sourced in an ecologically responsible way, but also through an aesthetic and pro-individual approach that focuses on the things that matter.

What are your thoughts on the future of design?

The future of design is a new kind of luxury that merges attention to exquisite detailing with personalization. Our homes, like the clothes we choose, are extensions of ourselves, filled with the power to influence our wellbeing.

Surprising mixes of casual textures, beautiful patterning, and intricate detailing will be the basis of a sophisticated simplicity.

Where were you born/ where did you grow up?

Born in Rome and growing up in Ancona, Italy, I was surrounded by fashion designers, including my grandmother! During my childhood, I was at the monastery every day in the summers to learn the art of complicated embroidery. When I was a teenager, I was sent to England to study English in these long summers. I then chose to study engineering because I am passionate about maths and complicated equations, this explains the decision to take a decidedly more technical vocation.

Please explain your relevant training/ work experience?

Regardless of an artistic flair, I decided to study technical engineering at Ancona Polytechnic University with a PHD in Engineering. After graduation I began working for the large Italian hi-tech company, Telecom Italia Mobiles and travelled the world in my role. Italy eventually beckoned me back to my shores, where my professional life would take a different direction in 2002 when I accepted the challenge of starting to work in shipbuilding. After a long experience in project management at a superyacht builder, my strong passion for art and design and for material research and finding innovative applications, I decided to put the entrepreneurial ambitions I’d had since childhood into action. I founded Luxury Projects Design Studio and Atelier, headquartered in Ancona in 2008.

Please describe the highlight of your career to date.

From technology and numbers to pure creativity, there is a large gap. I love the challenge every day and new work experiences around the world. From being part of the top research and development team on new Telco technologies to the design and creation of luxury high-end interiors, even if they are very different environments, a structural, organised and well-planned approach is the key of the success.

How did achieving this make you feel?

It has been an amazing path so far, a professional and personal growth. I have to say it’s the last few years that have been most exciting to me, as I invested my heart and soul into Luxury Projects and it has started to pay off. Everything started from my glamourous shoe collection and my fanatic attention to detail.

Now, challenging complicated projects and experiencing new cultures are the key drivers for creating innovative, tailor-made amazing interiors. Over a period of 5 years, we added serious projects to our portfolio of big refits and new build and at the

same time entered the Big Boat part of the Super Yacht Industry.

Seeing this growth is the dream of every manager in the industry but maybe what is most rewarding is the people and my team that I still consider my family. To feel the sheer joy of our clients when we deliver our carefully crafted projects is the most rewarding feeling. It continually inspires me and all my team at Luxury Projects.

How would you describe your work/design style /ethos?

Caring for our unique clients means producing top class results.

How has the pandemic changed your outlook on work/ life?

For us there is not much of a noticeable change, other than it is extremely busy as it seems more potential yacht owners than ever before are introducing themselves to yachting. What we do notice of course is the intensification of modern communication technologies like video calling and sharing information electronically.

Which direction are you moving in from a design perspective?

Our latest developments are to design more and more based on a direct client’s brief. Special and very personal projects with dedicated, devoted and personal involvement of the clients.

How is your work evolving?

Recently we are developing the skills to offer conceptual design and create technical feasible yacht concepts. We would like to concentrate on this and so we are seriously investing in 3D modelling and marine engineering.

The collection was to be timeless and elegant, allowing it to integrate seamlessly into any home.Antheus is beautifully eye-catching with its clear lines and the puristic forms of the bathroom ceramics. The wash basin features stunning faceted corners and elegant curves, a hark to the Art Deco era, while each piece within the collection embodies the spirit of Bauhaus. 2. Nihal by THG Paris - Presenting its new Nihal bathroom collection by designer, Xavier Catron, THG Paris maintains a fresh and evolving aesthetic by continuing to produce unique and groundbreaking designer collaborations. Inspired by landscapes, marquetry, and rich tones, Nihal expresses the dialogue between cultures and mixing tones and materials. The braces are crafted in Limoges porcelain, rejecting the traditional scrollwork of Middle Eastern ornamentation and emulating a subtle geometry and contemporary style.

World Map Table by Linley - Linley’s unique and striking World Map Table was hand-crafted by the team’s specialist craftsman in the UK using over forty individually selected luxury veneers. The design of the table’s main body is comprised of dark stained Fulbeck walnut in a high gloss finish, while the base features elegant nickel stringing. The table’s inlay is a combination of ripple sycamore and numerous natural and hand dyed veneers which include, ash burr, quilted maple, lacewood, fumed eucalyptus, ziricote and black mother of pearl.

39 Opposite Page: : Marlborough Project by Linley - The scheme of the Marlborough project at 88 St James’ was influenced by a mix of contemporary and traditional fabrics and finishes, working harmoniously alongside a palette of rich chestnut oranges and sea-foam blues. One of the main focuses of the project was the living and dining area. The team at Linley hand-crafted a bespoke Helix dining table in a grey eucalyptus veneer with a matching bespoke bookshelf at the end of the room, finished with a bronzed antique Venetian mirror surrounding it. The hard finishes included in the project were taken from a range of brass and engineered eucalyptus veneer, a classic staple of Linley. Top Left: Oscar Sideboard

by Fiona McDonald - The Oscar Rosewood Sideboard was custom made with brass detail and was inspired by the elegance of 1970’s Italian design. Fiona McDonald wanted to offer a handsome piece of furniture that would sit gracefully in a room, a versatile cabinet that combined elegance with practical design. The evocative lines of the Oscar sideboard, made in sustainably grown rosewood and accented with brass detail, brings a timelessness to the piece.

The designers worked with a small team of skilled craftsmen and women. Each element of the design can be customised to create a unique piece. Fiona McDonald’s team paid meticulous attention to detail at every stage of their service and pride themselves on making the process simple and clear. The result is something that can be cherished and appreciated for years. Middle Left: Frost Furniture Collection by Abitant & Gorshkoff Studio - The inspiration came from childhood memories, when in winter Gorshkoff Studio saw frosty patterns on the windows. Inspired by this idea, the designers thought that this pattern would be pertinent for this competition on pieces of furniture such as mirrors or a bespoke cabinet. The Italian ARTEVENEZIANA enthusiastically accepted this idea and made a chest of drawers and a mirror for the Milan exhibition. This was Gorshkoff Studio’s first experience and she was pleased that her work was so well received and ARTEVENEZIANA decided to create a whole collection called FROST. Gorshkoff studio believe that we do not always notice what surrounds us in the natural world. The creation of this collection of furniture makes one pay attention to the simplest things in nature and think about its fragility and that people need to protect it. Bottom Left: Dhan Desk by St James Interiors - The Dhan Desk, designed to be in a place of study, originated from the sleek and sharp angles incorporated within the architecture of the estate. The desire was to create a modern art deco piece, through the intricate use of angles and bold modern colours fused with traditional brass detailing. Completed with a solid walnut drawer, a high-gloss gun metal finish and satin brass inlays, this incredible sculptural piece enhances its surroundings, establishing a strong dynamic in the study. The desk was finished off with traditional joinery details such as dovetail drawers, and was only possible due to the combination of the 5 Axis CNC and the craftsmen who understood the ways in which to assemble it once all the pieces were finalised.

1. Custom Limoges Dinnerware by Atelier Soubiran - As product development becomes more and more mechanised, handmade items are as rare as they are desirable. Barlow Tyrie is a luxury outdoor furniture brand with a history spanning over 100 years. In 1919, following service in the First World War, Victor Tyrie (my grandfather) and Frederick Barlow were employed by The Castles Shipbreaking Company on a government-subsidized training scheme making outdoor furniture from Teak, which was sourced from the breaking of old timber ships, the foundation of the teak outdoor furniture industry. In 1920 Victor and Frederick together with a few others started their own business in London, initially in Walthamstow and shortly afterwards moving to a small horse stable no longer required behind a terrace of Victorian houses in Leytonstone.

The business prospered based on a quickly earned reputation for quality and value. Today, Barlow Tyrie is renowned worldwide for outdoor furniture that strikes the highest note in quality and style. Our international reputation is based in part on our superior designs, which we share with quality interior furniture making a piece correct to the eye and body. To these designs we add our uncompromising pursuit of quality in materials and manufacture - this is our ethos.

How would you describe your personal design style?

Classic-modern.

Where does your design inspiration come from?

Fred Baier – he was an inspiration. I went to a furniture design show in the mid-90s and it was then I thought furniture could be so much more than what it was. I then trained under renowned designer, Philip Hussey, who headed up the course that I attended.

In what direction do you feel that design is moving towards in a general sense?

Anything that is new in mixed materials and usually inspired by indoor concepts. Comfort is important too.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be?

Design global, think local.

What was your most challenging project to work on and why?

The first mixed-materials project was a real trial by fire. While exciting and challenging, it pushed our design team into an engineering mindset (e.g. welding, casting, injection moulding) as opposed to our heritage of wood work. While the learning curve was steep, we have since come to embrace the process.

Which products/services could you not live without when designing?

Auto CAD! How important are The International Design & Architecture Awards?

Exposure within the awards is vital for luxury brands like Barlow Tyrie to attain.

What projects are you currently working on?

We are expanding our collaborations with internationally renowned designers.

What are your aims and goals for the next twelve months?

Coach House is a wholesaler of furniture and accessories, we supply many different sectors of the industry from retail to interior designers, to hospitality and more.

Please tell us about your company, how it was founded, its aims and ethos?

Coach House was established in 1977 although it was in progress well before this. My mother and grandfather started the business in Yorkshire when she was just twenty-two. My father came into the picture soon after and the rest is history as they would say. We aim to be a company that our employees are proud of, and our customers are loyal to, as well as to provide the most compelling of buying experiences.

How do you feel your products are different from others in the market?

We carry a broad plethora of products, which I think makes us stand out. We’ve never restrained ourselves to just one look or one style, I admire people that do, but this was never what we set out to do. I think that’s why people like to buy from us, for the variety.

How has 2021 been for you and how are you looking to move forward in 2022?

Busy! I think most people in the interiors industry will agree that it’s been a busy but challenging year, I hope that in 2022 we can travel again as this helps broaden the mind in terms of design.

We also have new showrooms opening in the new year, it never stops at Coach House.

Please tell us a little about your current collections/new ranges?

New collections are very earthy again, both in texture and tone.

Lots of burnt sienna’s, browns and tan colours being used. Boucle on upholstery has just exploded. We also have a new floral collection out in September, which again has a very new and subtle palette, in the most part...

What is your vision for the future direction of the business?

Each year we try to up the calibre of not only our product, but the way in which it is presented, gaining more ground in the luxury goods market. We keep innovating in terms of new collections, expanding in terms of showrooms and being more conscious in our sourcing and carbon emissions. I hope all this continues.

How has this year changed us as consumers/designers/ business leaders?

I think the pandemic gave us a moment to step back and focus.

It was an opportunity to see what you can improve upon. I

think myself, my brother and sister all come at it from different directions, we’ve made some important improvements over the last year, which only helps going forward.

Tell us about your work/life balance and how you achieve this Being a family company, the work life balance can be tricky to achieve. We find ourselves out for dinner, admiring aesthetic of the restaurant or talking shop but this isn’t always a bad thing.

The shared passion is fun, plus it means we often chose stylish places to eat, stay, and play!

What direction do you feel design is moving in?

I think we will all appreciate our homes more going forward, and homes becoming an oasis or sanctuary is something I’ve discussed with colleagues and customers. The merge of indoor and outdoor spaces, warm earthy tones and comfort or wellness at home are here to stay, I would say.

Your favourite restaurant The Inn at Whitewell, it’s the pinnacle of Lancashire country pub.

When I think of home, I think of the Inn. Favourite city/holiday destination India is my favourite destination; I go for work, but it feels like a holiday. I love the colourful chaos of it all, the culture, and the curry. Plus, we also do charity work there, so that adds another dimension that is very fulfilling.

Your favourite hotel I was pretty blown away by Borgo Egnazia, Puglia; they’ve achieved the perfect balance of restraint and elegance. A very peaceful place I like to stay is Bushman’s Kloof in South Africa, no signal and incredible surroundings.

The car you drive The goal is a Mercedes Pagoda, not quite there yet!

Your thoughts on life Take the bull by the horns and embrace opportunity, but also remember to laugh at yourself every now and then.

Final thoughts or inspiration Remember to look, inspiration is everywhere. Sometimes I think we shut off, if you let your childlike imagination run free, you’ll reap in the rewards. My parents always encouraged this of me, for which I’m so grateful.

Hector Finch started the eponymous lighting company in the mid 1980’s and first traded from a small antique centre in Lancashire. With his father, a general antiques dealer, they bought stock from private houses, auctions and dealers.

Hector’s natural talent for engineering and how things were made enabled him to find the right specialist restorers for antique fittings to be brought back to life. In 1991 Hector moved to London and set up a small shop selling to private customers and rapidly developing a loyal following of interior designers. As the new millennium approached Hector’s wife, Emma, joined the business and the company started to design and manufacture a signature collection of fixtures, primarily for the design trade. Founded by Hector Finch in the late 1980’s, the business has developed from buying, restoring and selling antique light fittings to an internationally recognised brand supplying high end designers and architects worldwide. The range has grown with a design aesthetic of clean lines, correct proportions and a less-is-more philosophy and we fuse crisp, precision metalwork by British artisans with glass work sourced from mainland Europe. We pride ourselves in supporting specialist craft makers for our Italian glass and ceramic ranges and are passionate about maintaining relationships with traditional, family-owned businesses. We believe in sustainability based on the simple premise that if something is well made and beautiful it will have a long and useful life and to this end believe that by sourcing local materials and components, we are supporting our environment, community and economy. 2021 has been an exciting year of substantial growth, particularly in the USA and a focus on efficiency following a move to new and much larger premises at the end of 2020. 2022 looks to be building on this growth with a number of large hospitality projects in site and a burgeoning of business in some of our American markets, particularly Texas and California.

We have focused on building collections of designs and added some new design both in our coloured ceramic ranges and our coloured glass collections.

I think it has made us appreciate our clients, suppliers and staff more and to be grateful for the business we have been given especially when there have been many logistical challenges to overcome.

Tell us about your work/life balance and how you achieve this.

Now that my children are grown up and at university I have more time for the business and for travelling to see suppliers in Europe and clients and agents in America.

What direction do you feel design is moving in?

There is definitely a shift back towards colour and maximalism.

The trend for silver finishes has been replaced by clients looking for softer, more natural finishes so we are now selling many designs in brass and antique brass.

Final thoughts or inspiration: is there anything you would like to add?

I think that consumers are looking for quality products that have a long-term lifespan rather than cheaper throw away goods. Feeling good in your environment and being surrounded by things you love and relate to has never been more important and I think this will live on far beyond the end of the pandemic, whenever that will be.

The company was a result of the meeting of three men, André Tétard, Julien Haudiquez and Alexandre Grisoni, who in 1950 created “Robinetterie de la Poste” in Béthencourt-surMer. A few years later the company moved to new premises and changed its name to THG. The brand was active at that period in standard tapware. In the 1970s, THG turned to designing valves and has since developed a very large range of collections. Three successive generations work on.

Please tell us about your company, how it was founded, its aims and ethos?

For over 60 years, THG Paris has been enhancing bathroom design by offering models of bathroom fittings in very different styles. Both aesthetically pleasing and of high technical quality, THG Paris products comply with the requirements and standards prevailing in all countries around the world.

How do you feel your products are different from others in the market?

As a French manufacturer of bathroom fittings and accessories, THG Paris evokes both master craftsmanship and industry at its highest level. We have been imagining, developing and manufacturing our products in northern France since 1956.

With our unique expertise and know-how, we offer exceptional collections of bathroom fittings and accessories.

How has 2021 been for you and how are you looking to move forward in 2022?

With Covid impacting heavily on sales during the first part of 2021, we were so surprised to see how fast the recovery happened and we are now confidently looking forward to growth in 2022.

Please tell us a little about your current collections/new ranges?

We released three ranges last year, the Corvair range designed by Martin Kemp Design, the Icon X range by Studio FA Porsche and the Hirondelles with Lalique crystal. We are also delighted and looking forward to releasing three ranges next year.

What is your vision for the future director of the business?

We are renowned for our luxury ranges and designs and are now aiming to attract a broader customer base with our contemporary and transitional ranges.

How has this year changed us as consumers/designers/ business leaders?

I think most business have now found multiple ways to communicate and lead with their teams and clients with tools such as video calls and webinars. I do hope we regain some of that face-to-face interaction as it is much easier to take people on a journey with you while in the same environment.

Tell us about your work/life balance and how you achieve this.

Covid has forced all of us to make some drastic changes to the way we work and more importantly the way we look after our loved ones. I now have a fully set up home office - something I never even considered before - and make a point of picking my kids up from school a couple of times a week. I think even they are surprised I stand by that decision!

What direction do you feel design is moving in?

I am finding that our industry is slowly moving toward more ethical design with environmentally friendly materials, so we are working on an organic approach to manufacturing. We have also changed our fleet to an electric one as I believe that every small step in the right direction will make a difference.

Please tell us about your company, how it was founded, its aims and ethos?

Founded in 2007; making special bespoke and normal elevators for Yachts and Offshore, we managed to supply our returning clients in these difficult times and had a graduate growth to 20 people at this moment supplying shipyards but also high end residential projects.

How do you feel your products are different from others in the market?

We deliver bespoke glass elevators with one-of-a-kind systems based on the needs and demands of the owner and or designer.

We use proven technology and provide that extra level of service we know the client will appreciate; the end result is a centrepiece in their building or yacht. We are always thinking with the client and do not work from a catalogue of options to be chosen from as this does not work for the clientele we serve.

How has 2021 been for you and how are you looking to move forward in 2022?

2021 in the global pandemic made it sometimes difficult to visit our clients however we have been granted several nice projects and delivered several projects too. Currently we have 3 glass elevators in production and a few more in design stage. We made the decision to enlarge our factory with a huge assembly hall for a better construction and end result. As we also offer exclusive solutions we are currently working on a movable ceiling for a private client.

Please tell us a little about your current collections/new ranges?

We do not have collections as we work to the demands of the owners and designers; we are constantly innovating trying to use different materials and processes; we look forward to a client who likes to have something special such as a 3D printed bespoke elevator cabin that we know can be made.

What is your vision for the future direction of the business?

We like to serve the high end residential and yacht industry and for this you need a stable company with sufficient “normal” work and dedicated people. Our people are always proud of their products and enjoy working here and that is also important.

In the future a few more bespoke projects would be nice. We currently have two super special glass elevators in design phase with a truly new drive system; this allows us to move the cabin up and down and have the complete guide and drive system covered and not visible making it look like the cabin just moves up and down between two columns.

How has this year changed us as consumers/designers/ business leaders?

Making decisions is going slower and lead times are getting shorter, so this is not always a good thing with bespoke projects.

Pricing of materials is fluctuating a lot. Designers that we work with find our way of working really nice and this helps in giving them the best result within the strict elevator rules.

Tell us about your work/life balance and how you achieve this After work I ride horses with my two children, not only as a hobby but also in competition jumping up to 120cm courses. I love to ride my motor bike on the road and recently also on the dirt. In the winter skiing is a must but due to covid I had no luck last winter.

What direction do you feel design is moving in?

For our playing field, I think the end users like to get something nice and special that is reliable and safe. More glass is always the question which I think we are succeeding in pretty well. The final decoration and materials are nowadays more special and delicate. We are always balancing between structure, glass and looks to maximize the design intent of the designer.

Please tell us about your company, how it was founded, its aims and ethos?

Founded in 2003 by Steven Allen we’ve worked on projects around the UK and across the world. We have designed both commercial and residential projects and are used to working on all sorts of buildings - from ultra-modern architectural design through to Saxon churches.

Our aim is to offer an independent lighting design and supply service for all aspects of interior and exterior lighting. Our bespoke lighting designs bring atmosphere, comfort and style to places where people live, work and play.

How do you feel your products are different from others in the market?

Our knowledge, skills and experience of the lighting industry allows us to develop creative and sustainable results that pass the test of time. We fully understand how lighting interacts with building materials, surfaces and finishes. We understand the latest architectural LED technology and the importance of energy efficiency. With over 25 years experience in the lighting industry, I have particular interest in residential lighting design, new technologies and lighting controls, I also specialise in 3D Lighting Renders, Emergency Lighting and space planning.

How has 2021 been for you and how are you looking to move forward in 2022?

We have some amazing projects that we have completed including The Cotswold Club and The Highland Soap Company Visitor Centre along with many residential projects, even an aircraft hangar. We are currently working on some great self builds, a Huff House in Oxford, a newbuild house on Lake Maggiore, Italy and a renovation project in Jersey.

One major problem that we have seen is how different lights render colour. As the lighting market has grown over the last few years this has been overlooked but it is crucial not to wash out colour. We now work with a range of manufacturers that offer superb colour rendering.

What is your vision for the future direction of the business?

We are investing in the latest lighting design software to provide schematic design, 3D visualisations and photometric calculations to convey concept design ideas. We have a plan to expand the team. I am looking forward to visiting some building shows and doing a few live talks again.

How has this year changed us as consumers/designers/ business leaders?

Going forward I see one of the biggest motivations for taking on a project is to maximise the energy efficiency without compromising the visual effect or budget.

Tell us about your work/life balance and how you achieve this.

I am privileged to work on some amazing projects and alongside some great designers. I love visiting lighting shops and factories, otherwise you will find me on the beach with Sindy and our two Springer Spaniels.

What direction do you feel design is moving in?

Higher quality lighting than standard, that is to the client’s exact requirements available in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

Favourite city/holiday destination Oxford is my favourite, amazing to walk around the buildings and parks in the centre. My favourite holiday destination has to be the Maldives.

LED lighting is still evolving and will become more and more part of the fabric of the building with greater integrated technology.

With this in mind the lighting needs to be right first time.

Your thoughts on life?

Hard work and empathy. Always allow time for family friends and fun.

Without light there is not colour. No object of itself alone has colour. We know that even the most brightly coloured object, if taken into total darkness, loses its colour. Therefore, if an object is dependent upon light for colour, colour must be a property of light. And so it is.

This company was founded by Christopher Hyde-Smith. His ambition was to design beautifully handmade luminaires to adorn the most stylish interiors. Taking inspiration from the styles and motifs of the past, he launched his first range of classic lighting. Christopher was passionate about elegant lighting and often created one-off pieces. These soon featured in grand hotels and royal palaces, as well as exclusive homes both in the United Kingdom and abroad. Over the years the business grew to become Christopher Hyde Limited in 1995.

For a further 20 years, Christopher Hyde-Smith commanded his renowned luxury lighting brand until retirement. In 2015 Christopher Hyde Limited was acquired by the renowned Lissauer family. With three generations of knowledge, they could see the potential to further develop the Christopher Hyde brand. Mark Lissauer and his father have over 73 years of experience in the lighting industry. How has 2020 been for you and how are you looking to move forward in 2021?

Christopher Hyde has continued to provide an exceptional service to our customers, even during these very uncertain times.

In celebrating our 25th anniversary this year, we introduced a new bathroom collection, and our showroom in Chelsea Harbour received a high-end renovation. The upgrade has provided our customers with even more space to view each fitting in comfort and style. Whilst 2020 has had its challenges, I am proud of our achievements and look forward to launching our new wall light collection in 2021 amongst other designs.

What is your vision for the future direction of the business?

We continuously introduce new collections to Christopher Hyde Lighting, to reflect the evolving requirements of our customers. Recently we launched a new collection of bathroom wall lights due to customer requests. This is the first collection for Christopher Hyde and Ingress Protection rating 44. These wall lights are not only functional but have been designed with aesthetics in mind allowing them to be used in any room.

Currently we have more wall lights in production, as well as additions to our very successful ‘Victorian Lantern’ collection.

How has this year changed us as consumers/designers/ business leaders?

This year has given us the opportunity to do research and spend more time on designs as a result of limitations on travel. Using technology, we have been able to maintain relationships with our customers here in the UK, and abroad, through platforms such as Zoom and Teams, which has proven to be quite effective.

Whilst working with interior designers, we noticed an increase in

high-end residential renovations, as people have been spending more time in their own spaces.

Tell us more about your work/life balance and how you achieve this.

Work/life balance is important and one that is not easily achieved. Being a family-owned business does have its benefits, with my father and I working side by side for many years. Even with busy schedules, we set time aside every day to have lunch together. I am also very fortunate in that my wife has been a great sounding board over the years. We regularly share ideas and I value her input. With business travel largely on hold this year, it has given me the opportunity to spend more time with my family.

What direction do you feel design is moving in?

There is always an interest in classical design and next year will be no different. Customers are looking for luminaires that will not only last a long time, but also not go out of style. Christopher Hyde fittings are mainly made from solid brass and finished with a top-quality patina. Using solid brass for our collections ensures these luminaires will withstand the test of time, whilst also remaining timeless.

LZF Lamps was born from the imagination, passion and work of its founders Mariví Calvo and Sandro Tothill, who in 1994 created a small lighting workshop, which moved to an old renovated winery in 2008 in the Valencian town of Chiva. Please tell us about your company, how it was founded, its aims and ethos?

Our company began almost by accident. We started making lighting objects for ourselves and other people then began asking if we could make lamps for them too. We only work with wood veneer as a diffusing material, something we accidentally discovered while picking the veneers for our kitchen cupboards.

We had the veneers in A4 size swatches on a light table in the studio when at dusk we switched on the light table and discovered that some veneers were stunning when back lit.

We created a company, a brand and our own style, no one asked us to do this, it was an energy that was born and has developed and grown ever since. We have made mistakes and learnt from them.

How do you feel your products are different from others in the market?

Our products are unique in different ways. Firstly, we only use wood veneer as a diffusing material and have done so for the last twenty-six years. Secondly, our products will typically have their origin and inspiration in nature and art: we produce what inspires us and makes us feel something for that object. We must be naturally drawn towards the design from the outset.

How has 2021 been for you and how are you looking to move forward in 2022?

Thanks to having been awarded the Spanish National Design Award in 2020, 2021 has been a year of rebirth. We are looking to expand our operation with a new production facility by 2022.

After the period of Covid, there is a new energy bubbling under the surface which is palpable. We believe our products are closer to what people are after these days, a greater contact with natural materials and a warmth of atmosphere meaning lighting that highlights the natural.

Please tell us a little about your current collections/new ranges?

At LZF, wood has been the staple of every lamp we have imagined, designed, and made. Enveloping light, our natural wood veneers shine with vitality and emanate warmth. More recently, we began exploring other materials, seeking new ways to complement our veneers. We chose to work with glass, having a desire to craft an exceptional glass and wood symbiosis.

Madrid-based Mayice, whose glass creations had made an impression on us, set about designing several new glass and wood lamps for LZF. In collaboration with master glass-blowing artisan Eduard Garuti, they created Eris, Estela, and the awardwinning Dune.

We have the honour to work with an eclectic roster of accomplished designers and diligent craftspeople. As a company, LZF is not guided by trends: our collection is permanent and our handmade lamps are built to last. Much of our current collection has been part of LZF’s oeuvre for many years. We collaborate with a mix of established and up-and-coming designers. One long-standing LZF collaborator is Irish-born Ray Power, who has created a number of standout and award-

winning lighting fixtures, including: Escape, Link, and Swirl.

Another long-standing collaborator is German-born Burkhard Dämmer. His thoughtful designs include Pod, Poppy, and I-Line. Several younger design studios have created a number of fresh and modern lamps for LZF. Valencia-based MUT designed Tomo, Lens, and Loop, while new kid on the block Gazpacho Studio, designed Maruja (a self-assembly pendant with a classic chandelier-like silhouette).

We have a wonderfully quirky and playful life-size collection.

Big Bird (horizontal and vertical), our latest life-size addition, encapsulates LZF’s penchant for dreaming big and reengineering the concept of what a lamp can be. First imagined by the artist Isidro Ferrer, Big Bird is made in collaboration with master artisan Manolo Martin. This life-size lamp is built with a traditional craft technique used by Fallas artisans, known as the vareta technique.

What is your vision for the future direction of the business?

Our company is a family business, based on the collaboration with artisans and artists. Our desire is to create lasting lighting pieces that will illuminate spaces for people, without losing the fascination that they transmit. The future therefore will be built on these guiding principles. It takes a keen eye for balancing the aesthetic with business viability.

How has this year changed us as consumers/designers/ business leaders?

The global pandemic has made us all realise the fragility of this world system, that has been built up around us since the seventies. I would say that there has definitely been some introspective thinking going on, where we tend to look back into our communities and begin to believe that maybe the answer is local rather than transglobal. Being locally independent from a manufacturing perspective brings a sense of stability and a sense of things that are more predictable or pliable, rather than this dependence on international supply chains that can easily fail or be temporarily suspended.

Tell us about your work/life balance and how you achieve this Ha, that’s quite simple, our life is our work, our work is our life.

If your work also happens to be a pleasure in life as it is for an artist, then work is not work it is simply living.

What direction do you feel design is moving in?

Design is definitely moving towards sustainable ways of doing things, it is actually moving decades ahead of the world, and is laying the paving stones for the movements and needs to come, not only in sense of objects and materials but also methodology and planning.

Your thoughts on life Be creative, inventive and do what makes you feel alive.

Final thoughts or inspiration If you have created a company from scratch, no one will be able to do that job better than you, if the time comes to choose a replacement it will come from within, amongst your longest and most faithful collaborators.

Our company statement is that we ‘make everywhere feel like home’ and this applies to any space we provide furniture for, hospitality, hotel rooms, lobby and reception areas, restaurants, cafes and bars, long-term rental apartments, office spaces, meeting areas, F&B and retail spaces - as well as, of course, homes!

Nature is an ongoing source of inspiration, and right now our sofas are hugely inspired by soft organic shapes, the tactility and the colours of nature. Our Paula sofa, the Rose sofa and the Babette chair are good examples of organic shapes inspired by nature. Even the pink colour of Rose is inspired by the pink leaves of the fall season.

Please tell us about your company, how it was founded, its aims and ethos?

In 2012, our founders Christian and Cathrine Rudolph set out to challenge the furniture industry. Until then, high-quality design at a fair price was hard to come by - both the design aesthetic and the quality of material were sacrificed in exchange for lower prices; their idea was to offer high-quality design at fair prices, therefore challenging the way we buy designer furniture.

At SOFACOMPANY we want our customers to buy furniture that compliments their surroundings. We want them to take ownership of the sofa (or other furniture) as soon as it’s in their home, hotel, office or restaurant - which is achieved by making it personal with the styling and the way people interact with the product. That’s what’s make the product come alive!

Creating high-quality design at fair prices continues to be our mission, and it affects everything we do: we carefully handle all steps in the process and deliver our products directly from our own factory. This concept removes any non-value-adding links from the supply chain, reducing the overall cost. Controlling the entire production chain makes us so agile that we can offer customised solutions to fit any surroundings and any design need.

We believe in flexible modular sofas as the modules can be rearranged and/ or can be one colour or several colours/ fabrics - convenient to both private and professional customers. It’s important to show some personality - not only in private homes but also in the professional segment.

People now have a bigger focus on homeliness, meaning a homely feeling both at home and out of home. In 2021, our statement ‘We make everywhere feel like home’ was strengthened both because of COVID and because it is a general spirit of the time.

Tell us about your work/ life balance and how you achieve this...

I like to work! As a designer you are somehow always working as you have an ongoing attention to your surroundings, in regards to shapes, colours, materials, surfaces, combinations, art, people, the light, the atmosphere etc. Personally, I always have a notebook with me to write and draw, as well as my phone to take photos. I find inspiration everywhere! Talking to people, being in nature, being on holiday, at home or at work. So for me, the line between work and my personal life is very blurred... and I love it!

What direction do you feel design is moving in?

Sustainability will, for certain, mean A LOT! Designing new products without thinking of sustainability is no longer an option.

Your favourite restaurant Gro Eatery in Copenhagen and in general local street kitchens in Ho Chi Minh City.

Favourite city/ holiday destination New York - especially Williamsburg!

Your favourite hotel Les Deux Tours, Marrakesh - I go there on an annual juice retreat.

Trying to live while I can, enjoy, be humble and grateful. Give out what you want to get back.

Stileman Lighting Design is a London based independent lighting design studio with a global approach that comes from the desire to use light as an artistic medium, whilst embracing new technologies. With a background in fine art, Alexander Stileman honed his passion for interiors specifically into lighting design and started his eponymous company in 2013 following seven years in the industry. Stileman Lighting Design works closely with clients, architects, and interior designers to help create bespoke concepts for visually exciting spaces for interiors, exteriors and landscapes.

What sectors does your company work in?

Restaurant, Hotel & Residential Lighting Design.

Please tell us about your company, how it was founded, its aims and ethos?

The company was started after spending seven years in the industry in an aim to forge a distinctive style in Lighting Design.

The objective was to always keep a small, specialised team to collaborate on each project across all disciplines. Our focus is to curate light in conjunction with the project design team.

How do you feel your products are different from others in the market?

Our upcoming lighting range is designed to be more like furniture that light fittings, with the use of materials more usually seen in an armchair than a wall light for example. Our knowledge of lighting effects has helped develop this range with light in mind and not simply a decorative piece to adorn a table or a wall. The choice of materials has been paramount, focusing on local suppliers and manufacturers.

How has 2021 been for you and how are you looking to move forward in 2022?

2021 has seen a major shift back into the residential sector where we began, this was naturally due to the pandemic closing down all restaurants and hotels. In the later part of this year we have started to see inquiries coming in again for the commercial market, which is very exciting and are also looking forward to launching our product range in early 2022.

Please tell us a little about your current collections/new ranges?

We are currently working on several private villas in St Baths as well as residences in Paris, Jersey, London and Gloucestershire.

Alongside this we have a new late night bar in Mayfair, which is due to open late 2021 as well as a beautiful Pub in Notting Hill, which is being brought back to life.

What is your vision for the future director of the business?

As the founder and myself in this role for many more years

to come, I would hope that I will develop more personally before handing over to someone more suited to the changes in technology and trends that will happen in the future but who has a similar vision.

How has this year changed us as consumers/designers/ business leaders?

People are more discerning these days and conscious of the impact of their choices on the planet and the people around them. We have found that people are wanting more locally sourced products, focusing more on sustainability. I am glad to see people who are happier to pay more for goods that will last and that are kinder to the environment.

Tell us about your work/life balance and how you achieve this My wife gave birth to our first daughter in October 2019 and then our second in August 2021 so combining that with the pandemic has meant that my life has been very much family orientated for the last two years but normally I love early mornings in my studio when everything seems a bit quieter allowing me to focus more on my designs.

What direction do you feel design is moving in?

I feel that there has been a welcome departure from the more stark, minimalist approach with more attention being paid to interesting textures and layering of materials to create more stimulating and exciting spaces. Spaces are being used differently as well with a huge increase in shared workspaces leading the drive.

Favourite city/holiday destination My wife is from California so heading home with her to LA is always something to look forward to.
