This month we take a second and thorough look at some of the projects shortlisted for The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2017. We have taken the time this year to publish shortlisted projects over consecutive months, with the issues published in April and May being given over, for the most part, to the work of designers shortlisted. This issue is however more than just a series of projects; we have delved in to the designers’ Little Black Books, asking them for the products,

companies and services they endorse, have to use and would not be without - from fabrics to lighting, flooring to furniture, our aim is to pass on those key trade secrets. Next month, the all important first Winners’ Issue will be published, when we will take a detailed look at the projects you have chosen as winners in this years awards. Until next month, Joanne

DESIGNER IN PROFILE...

GIANGI RAZETO INNOVATION & DESIGN DIRECTOR F.LLI RAZETO E CASARETO S.P.A.

Which sector do you specialise in? Marine locks and doors/furniture accessories. Is the Superyacht/Aviation market an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? Yes, around 40%. How long have you worked in this sector? We have been working in the shipbuilding and yacht building industry since 1920. What other sectors do you work in? Our products are dedicated to anything that goes on water; we also feature a range of products for the railway industry and others for high-end architectural projects, either domestic or commercial. If able, please give details of your recent interesting projects and your direct involvement/participation in these projects. We have clients spread all over the world; you may find our products on many Superyachts, each one being unique and we are often asked to offer bespoke designs to perfectly match interior styles; the choice of materials is the key; for example for Amer we have been using green Abalone mother of pearl to match the opulence of one yacht interior and recycled glass to fit the minimalistic style of another. For the owner of Sea Force One I have been personally sculpting each of the 36 door handles; Majesty Yachts is the first yard who’s been fitting our luminous handles; Vismara choose our handles - had to be minimalistic in style and light - for the lucky SuperNikka racing boat; M.Y. Yas fitted Freego handles in different materials in different areas; leather, marble and 16 Luxe et al

nickel and chrome brass. Each yacht and each area deserves a specific study. Please talk us through your process of design, build and application for your products, where applicable. I am always somehow inspired by what surrounds me. I take inspiration from nature when it comes to beauty and try to seep it through experience to add functionality. What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? The mix of many factors: Reliability: our core business is in the marine segment where the quality standards are very high due to the severe environmental conditions. Flexibility: we are a medium sized company where craftsmanship is married with technology, this allows us to study the right solution for each client. Heritage: we are the third generation of the company founded by my grandfather with his brother and the firm Casareto in 1920. Creativity: The path of my company, as well as the one of many others in the industry, represents the best of Made in Italy, where a production is recognised as done well and perfect in quality terms, where creativity has added to the quality of the aesthetic and functional factor, that has decreed its success in the world and is indicative of “BELLO e BEN FATTO” (BEAUTIFUL AND WELL DONE), of the Made in Italy acclaim. What are your current plans for 2017? We will be launching in the Fall a new collection of handles, Tribute to Sicily, where luxurious materials meet iconic images in a mix of art and technology. We are very excited about this.

THE MOST EXCLUSIVE DOOR HANDLE ON THE PLANET RAZETO & CASARETO F.lli Razeto & Casareto S.P.A. have designed and made exclusive marine and architectural door hardware and accessories in Italy since 1920. After the success of FreeGo®, handles inspired by bio mimicry in nature, FR&C released TRIBUTES, luxurious lines of custom bejewelled handles, which merge exclusive materials with the most advanced technologies into a unique product, result of the co-operation of several manufacturing excellencies. “Our mission...” states Italian design ambassador Giangi Razeto “is to tribute our most exclusive designs to those places and icons we love, to the luxurious and glamorous lifestyle. Metals, Diamonds, Crystal Glass, Passion, Technology, Luxury Icons, Craftsmanship and Customization are the ingredients of our recipe.” The first Tribute that was unveiled to the world was the Tribute to Doha. It combined natural diamonds, sintered titanium, gold, LED lighting and Diamond Dust in what is known as The 100K Handle, the most exclusive door handle on the planet; the Tribute to Doha has been followed up by the Tribute to Bohemia and the Tribute to Cannes but there are more still to come. To further underscore both the company’s vast catalogue and its ability to produce bespoke pieces tailored to each client’s individual tastes, FR&C releases in limited edition “Sea World” a collection of luminous handles which are authentic works of art engraved by Master Arno Cancik. Cancik uses an unusual hand glass engraving technique to reproduce three-dimensional scenes which, once lit, seem to flutter to life. Born in 1942 in Decin, Czech Republic, Cancik engraved for Fabergè the “Tercentenary Egg”, in 2002, which was decorated with nine portraits of the Tsar with Tsareena and their palaces. The egg was given in 2003 to President Putin in Saint Petersburg. Afterwards he engraved the “Romanov Egg“ with Tsar Nicholas II, Tsareena and their children. The Sea World Limited handles will thus remain one-off designs but brilliantly showcase how the combination of FR&C’s technological and Master Cancik artistic skills guarantee an absolutely unparalleled standard of exclusivity, effortlessly mirroring each individual client’s personal tastes and choices. www.razetocasareto.com

THE NEXT GENERATION OF FURNITURE BUILDERS NW DESIGN GUILD

Which sector do you specialise in? Superyacht interiors and and luxury residences. Is the Superyacht/Aviation market an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? Yes, the superyacht market lies at the heart of our business. We have been providing furniture to this market for over a decade. How long have you worked in this sector? We began custom furniture production in the year 2000 for the high end residential market and changed the direction and focus to the yachting industry in 2004. What other sectors do you work in? Luxury residences and high end commercial design. If able, please give details of your recent interesting projects and your direct involvement/ participation in these projects. This spring we had 2 separate design requests to integrate the use of gas springs as a method of support and lift. On a main salon sofa, the challenge was to create elegant furniture and luxurious seating that lifts to reveal a storage compartment. We also collaborated on the design and development of an upholstered bed that lifted with the use of gas springs. In both cases, our company was asked first and then last – when all others declined… Please talk us through your process of design, build and application for your products, where applicable. 1818 Design Et al Al Luxe et

Our design process starts as a collaboration between the yacht interior design firm, the shipyard project manager, and our team of designers at NWDG. All aspects of the design details are meticulously discussed to create a design and custom fit which meets the yacht owner’s expectations. What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? We have mastered the technique of building luxury upholstered furniture to accommodate the shipyards structural and custom requirements. Examples of this would be how our furniture pieces can be customised to house electronic components, additional storage, custom bedding, modular parts for installation, or inclusions to allow optimal air flow. Our goal is that upon installation the integrity of design and comfort of has not been comprised in any way. In our years of doing business, I don’t believe we have said no to any custom challenge. Where others say, it cannot be done, we deliver. Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced/ affected your work in recent years. With the advancement of mobile computing, we essentially have access to a virtual design studio anywhere, which is great for those moments of inspiration as well as our productivity as a company. In addition, all work areas are interconnected and the instant sharing of information with each other has enhanced our communication as a design team.

NW Design Guild has built a reputation for the highest quality workmanship and versatility in design and construction in the Pacific Northwest and around the world. In the year 2000, after 25 years in the field of Interior Design and Custom Home Furnishings, head designer Lynn Holms purchased an existing furniture manufacturing facility with the goal of building custom upholstered furniture “by designers for designers”. In 2004, it became apparent because of their level of excellence in building high-end custom upholstery and their passion for creating furniture as “art”, that serving the yachting sector was the perfect evolution for the company. In recent years, they have realized the importance of recruiting young talent into their trade. This new generation is gifted with the advantage of technology. Combining technology with the teachings of classic craftsmanship, NW Design Guild can continue the timeless tradition of bench made upholstery, doing their part to ensure the future of producing quality furniture in the USA. Conrad Shipyards pride themselves with the knowledge that all Conrad yachts are unique because they are built by people who have a passion for sailing and yacht building. Their experienced team work relentlessly to predict the needs and exceed the expectations of their clients, clients whose aim is perfection which will be visible and tangible in every detail of the yacht. They believe that yacht building is an art form inspired by a full and deep understanding of the client’s needs and aspirations, from which vessels which are individual and quite extraordinary are created. Conrad Shipyard are celebrating Shortlist success at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2017 in the category of Sailing Yachts under 40 metres with their project S/Y Bellkara which was delivered in June 2016. This magnificent custom-built, aluminium, sloop-rigged, fast ocean cruiser was designed for an experienced sailor as the lifelong dream for an uncompromised performance yacht. Additionally, safety and comfort for family cruising was a requirement. The dynamic silhouette of the yacht has been additionally emphasised by her silver paint and the noble line of the deckhouse windows. A carbon mast, lifting keel system, hydraulic winches, functional deck layout and modern hydraulics make her a thrilling sail and a joy to handle. Featuring 3 guest cabins plus 2 crew cabins, her spacious, cosy interior provides for exceptional comfort of living for global cruising and fast passage making. BELLKARA is a fast, agile, and responsive yacht yet luxurious cruiser delivering the highest level of comfort to the owner and his guests from Conrad Shipyard. The yacht is 27.9 meters long, 7.4 metres wide and draught with the lifting keel can be changed from 2.3 metres to 4.7 metres. The yacht has a performance optimised hull powered by carbon rig and advanced sails in combination with lifting keel the secret to outstanding nautical characteristics of Bellkara. The modern, dynamic silhouette of the

yacht is underlined by the characteristic deckhouse glazing and four-spreader mast towering over the deck. The powerful 355-horsepower engine, large fuel tanks and strong hull make Bellkara ready for long-range cruising at open seas. Her wide beam delivers outstanding interior volume divided into two zones. The aft part contains crew accommodations with two double crew cabins, crew mess, laundry, and navigation desk. The crew area has a separate companionway and direct access to the engine room. The large and functional galley forms a link between the crew area and the space for the owner and his guests. The full beam main salon comprises of a generous dining area and the lounge – located in the central part of the boat. Bellkara has a notably bright interior for a sailing yacht thanks to the extensive superstructure glazing and prevailing white painted furniture with elegant oak and cherry wood accents. The interior styling was the work of Yacht Construction Consulting GMBH and Conrad Shipyard. The accommodation is for seven guests, split across a master suite in the bow and two double cabins, as well as a Pullman berth. The exquisite master suite accommodates a huge bedroom, walkin wardrobe, beautiful bathroom, and separate toilet. Isolated from salon by means of adjoining corridor, the owner’s apartment offers remarkable comfort and silence. At the stern of the yacht there is a spacious garage which can fit a nearly 5m tender and other boat toys. Conrad Shipyard’s favourite aspect of the project is that even though the reliable yet sensitive sailboat gives enormous pleasure from sailing, the comfort of the interior and extra noise reducing insulation makes the boat an ideal place to rest and relax. Conrad Shipyard is an experienced yacht builder which specialises in building the highest quality, class approved, steel and aluminium custom yachts: in lengths ranging from 25 to 90- meters. They are located in Gdansk, Poland, the most historical shipbuilding city in

Northern Europe. The shipyard employs, in partnership with her parent company, Marine Projects Ltd, over 300 of the best specialists in naval construction, complex engineering, old world craftsmanship and modern yacht building. They co-operate with the most reliable and professional companies and suppliers in Poland, Europe and throughout the world based on their motto of “the highest quality of custom yachts at the best value”. Their employees have experience in building a variety of yachts of different styles and a versatile level of technology, including aluminium carbon rigged, performance sailing yachts, large cadet training square-riggers, steel and aluminium motor yachts from the best Dutch, German and British designers and custom high-speed craft. Their specialty is also the production of luxurious yacht furniture and interiors, which meets the highest global design and quality standards. Thanks to devotion of the people who were working on the design and their close focus on each detail the design of this project has fulfilled or even exceeds owner’s expectations. Conrad Shipyard believe that Bellkara is an outstanding sailing yacht with a truly timeless design which makes her stand out from the crowd.

PASSENGER-CENTRIC DESIGN COMBINING EFFICIENCY, TECHNICAL INNOVATION, AND CONTEMPORARY STYLE Dassault Aviation New Falcon 900LX Cabin Interior

Today’s Falcon jets are designed and manufactured alongside Dassault Aviation’s fighter aircraft. These versatile, high-performance jets can satisfy the broadest spectrum of business flying needs, from small-airport operations to long international flights. Since the rollout of the first Falcon 20 in 1963, nearly 2,400 Falcon jets have been delivered. The Falcon family of jets encompasses six aircraft, all positioned at the top end of the business jet market, from the twin-engine 3,350 nm (6,200 km) largecabin Falcon 2000S to its tri-engine 6,450 nm (11,945 km) ultra-long range Falcon 8X, and Falcon 900 series. Launched at EBACE in May 2008, the 4,750 nm/8,800 km Falcon 900 LX trijet offers 7% additional range over the Falcon 900EX. Climb performance is also improved by 10%, allowing the airplane to reach FL390 in just 20 minutes. The 900LX features 35-40% better efficiency than other airplanes in its class. It can fly from New York to Moscow; Paris to Beijing and Mumbai to London. EASA and FAA certifications were achieved in July of 2010. Dassault Aviation are celebrating shortlist success with their project New Falcon 900 LX Cabin Interior, in the category Interior Design / VIP Completions. The Interior Designer was Dassault Design Studio and the Interior Stylist was Caroline Larmaraud. The Falcon 900LX entered the market in 2010. It was time for an update to more modern standards of comfort and style. The design team took a passenger-centric approach that combined efficiency, technical innovation, and contemporary style. The result is a cabin with more clarity and fluidity. More comfort physically and visually. To accomplish this, the Spec & Design team worked closely with Dassault engineers

34 Luxe et al

to maximize improvements without compromising existing features that have made the 900LX such a trusted platform. The team started with a design language based on the new Falcon generation. Those curves and sharper contrasts made for a more fluid layout with brighter highlights. They balanced functional and decorative elements into a complex yet simplified aesthetic. Artful efficiency was the desired result with contemporary styling and user-centric ergonomics. That meant rethinking the approach to how and when passengers should access specific parts of the furniture or any relevant devices. Features had to be integrated more seamlessly. Controls were tucked into the armrest of the seat. Buttons were put within easy reach. This echoes modern device design in general with its sleek, minimalist surfaces. Light management was improved so that ambient light can be adjusted to correspond to activity or mood, resting, working or dining. The concept of continuous cabin fluidity also led to rethinking the seats, taking into account their different purposes. Seats were re-configured with more settings depending on the activity— a meeting with business partners or travelling with the family. No detail has been overlooked. The impact of this diligence is evident in the creative mixing of every material and finish, from high-gloss varnished wood to buttery soft leather, every joint and stitch crafted to perfection. Dassault’s favourite aspect of the project was the challenge of reimagining a classic interior and bringing it into a new world of design and technology. The design works well because of the collaborative partnership between the engineers and the Spec & Design team from the very beginning of the project. They learned from each other along the way so that in the final design, form follows function, leading to a pleasing and highly efficient cabin space. The aesthetic used for the cabin redesign can be seen in the design of advanced luxury automobiles and yachts—objects their customers appreciate for their high-end design ergonomics. And their modernised cabin technology features are as powerful and easily managed as a tablet or smartphone with similar design sensibilities in their sleek simplicity. The Dassault Falcon Jet completion’s expertise in Little Rock, Arkansas, has been a key component of the success of the project.

THIS COMMERCIAL BREAKTHROUGH MARKED THE START OF ONE OF THE MOST STRIKING SUCCESS STORIES IN THE INTERNATIONAL AVIATION INDUSTRY.

Dassault Aviation has a remarkable history that stretches back over 100 years to the very dawn of aviation. The first real air battle in history raged in the skies over Verdun in 1916. France’s Nieuport pursuit planes are equipped with an impressive new propeller that is simple, rugged, effective and even beautiful. It’s called the Éclair (“Lightning”), and it was designed by Marcel Bloch, later known as Marcel Dassault, barely 24 years old. The following year, with some 40 propeller manufacturers in France turning out 253 different models, the government selected only the three best, including the Éclair, which would be used, for example, on the Spad VII flown by French ace Georges Guynemer. This commercial breakthrough marked the start of one of the most striking success stories in the international aviation industry.

INTERIOR DESIGN THAT MAKES PERFECT USE OF EACH AND EVERY ROOM WITH BEAUTY Luxury Projects M/Y Destiny

Luxe et al 41

Luxury Projects (LP) and the founder of the Italian interior design studio Laura Pomponi are celebrating the shortlist success of their refit project of the 38m Heesen yacht M/Y Destiny at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2017, to be held in May in Venice, in the category of Interior Design Award – Power Yacht. Having celebrated a much deserved win in the highly competitive International Yacht and Aviation awards 2015, Laura has returned in style with shortlisted success in a number of categories for both interior design and product design. M/Y Destiny has been a project with a clear focus right from the outset. From the very first briefing, the architecture and design of M/Y Destiny focused on the efficiency of the use of space. The remit was to create a collection of ambient environments for luxury living. With a style that is modern-minimalistic, the use of light and the functionality of the space have been optimised to provide the maximum perception of the internal expanse. This refit was designed to create a new yacht, a yacht which could be really enjoyed at all times and in all spaces. Modern and minimalistic are the key words of this yacht, where light and functionality are perfectly balanced. Following the brief of the young Owners, who very specifically asked for an “all-white” yacht, the design approach was less is more. The brief of the “all-white” yacht was strongly related to the passion of the Owner for modern art and how to display his stunning modern art paintings in the best way but still creating a cosy ambiance. There is great attention to details and use of bespoke furniture with a minimalistic style, they perfectly merge and contribute to the harmony achieved in the full project. Custom made for this project are exquisite pieces from Luxury Projects design: the “waving” dining table and the “glowing” coffee table in three pieces, these creations are unique art in their own right. The salon, in particular, represents the incredible dimensions of space for a yacht

42 Luxe et al

MODERN AND MINIMALISTIC.

of this size. The cosy salon with the relaxed aft area as well as the custom lounge sofa opposite the new large television, in conjunction with the new outdoor seating area, demonstrates explicitly how Luxury Projects have created continuity from outdoor to indoor. This seamless connection between the outdoor and indoor areas was critical in ensuring that the boat’s new design met the design brief. As ever Laura Pomponi would only source from the high-end suppliers and on this project they included Altraluce, Atelier du Litoral, Flexform. The new innovative lighting system is another key aspect of MY Destiny, making the difference in the perception of spaces and surfaces. Using state-of the art LED technique (indirect light combined with strings no more grids of ceiling spots), white colour temperatures were carefully selected along with silver foil ceiling recessed surfaces. Advanced LED System used also for all new outdoor lights. LP designed the décor lamps and custom made wall light in Owner and Guest cabins. The Sundeck offers an incredible space, which allowed LP to create different areas for enjoying sun bathing, dining, lounging-relaxing and to chill out. The design achieved the realisation of intimate atmospheres for all the outdoor spaces, a total new layout of the fly, where a new lounge sofa was added facing the newly created dining area. The new entertainment system provided is neatly integrated in the new interior. The Owners’ joy and appreciation for the work completed by Luxury Projects was evident as they commented “From all this experience, the best thing was the shock I had when I first saw the job done. I fell in love with Destiny the second I walked into her main deck lounge, not only the work and craftsmanship was perfectly done but specifically how Luxury Projects made the perfect use of each and every room and everything so extremely beautiful and useful at the same time”. Laura Pomponi believes that the success of the project is an absolute credit to the relationship of cooperation, inclusion and complete understanding that Luxury

Projects formed with the Owner from the very beginning. When that relationship worked so well, the project was set to succeed. The process began with immediate effect when the Luxury Projects team began to translate the conceptual design into working drawings and contractors and suppliers were straight away assigned to the job. The Owners entrusted Laura Pomponi with the entire outsourcing choices, as well as the on site management and design choices. As a result, Laura was able to run the project in an astonishing time frame within the planned budget with spectacular results and quality. The Owners’ enthusiasm and delighted response to the success of this project was evident “Working with Luxury Projects Studio has been the best experience we have ever had in all the years working with many other decorators and designers. Laura and her team were always ready to listen to anything we had to say, ready to give us the proper time and discuss our ideas. Luxury Projects would offer us all possible options before we decided how to finalise any area on our boat.” From Laura’s perspective and vast experience of high-end interior design of both re-fits and new constructions, the craft of interior design is a continually exciting challenge. ‘It is always a great creativity effort to allow innovative design concepts to be neatly integrated in a new interior.’ Her philosophy behind her creativity is that she considers each project from the perspective of entering the mindset of the clients; listening, observing their lifestyle. She realises their visions in term of spaces, functionalities and innovation. For Laura a yacht has to give energy and pleasure to be lived in, then colours, materials, finishes get their important role. And she considers her impressive number of successful refit projects to have always been an opportunity to change the old for the new, adding less to create more. Her signature is to strive to create the unique in a distinctive style which uses the combination of special custom made luxury materials, which are mainly natural and re-engineered.

Spectrum 61’s unique, bold character, commanding presence and performance are designed to excite the most discerning superyacht owners and their distinguished guests. The principal design objective was to achieve the highest-possible enjoyment and excitement experience, and pride of ownership. Every single area is designed and tested for utility, excitement-value, and atmosphere. There are unique 5-metre iris openings in the sailing deck and main deck which open the atrium space up vertically from water to sky, as well as horizontally. The iris units are engineered as self-contained, replaceable cassettes, for standard deck loads and can be used as dance floors when closed and locked. They can only be opened after surrounding safety rails are swung into place, closing an electrical circuit allowing hydraulic activation. The passionate red deck-head panels outside are kept visually constrained within sharp, geometric borders, striking bold contrasts to the otherwise formal black and white ship character. From a distance the formal dominates and only glimpses of the rebellious red seem to escape their formal constraints. At anchor, beach clubs are opened like a lotus flower and the dockside café atmosphere set up, the aft-deck grill and bar come to life. Neighbouring yacht owners and their crews can be invited over for drinks, to spin tales and enjoy a hearty evening meal. Small and larger groups then retreat to the many lounging areas to recount

50 Luxe et al

the day’s excitement, while others recline to a movie in the ship’s THX-rated theatre. All ship functions are resolved for efficiency and for structural, mood and aesthetic balance. The hull underwater form is optimised from 40-years’ experience of designing efficient, well-behaved, low-resistance hulls, proven quantitively through extensive tank testing, and confirmed qualitatively from successful service mileage of many similar hulls. The optimised sailing-cat bulb works perfectly in a reverse, axe-bow profile. The hull sides and superstructure shapes are generated in 3D from pure geometric primitives comprising planes, cylinders and spheres for ultimate fairness. Hull topsides are generated with only three master-stations and three vertices each, to be as close as possible to a spherical segment for ultimate fairness and a planar sheer. Sedlmayer Associates’ favourite aspect of the project is the transition from a superlative fast sailing catamaran by day, to a placid lotus flower resting on the water in the evening, with open petals, providing continuous high-quality life-experiences. Six months of intensive design work was invested into every nook and cranny of the ship, to assure that everything lives up to and exceeds expectations. According to Sedlmayer Associates, a sailing vessel is intrinsically environmentally friendly, although the Superyacht category is basically not. Spectrum 61 is designed for maximum cross-ventilation to minimise airconditioning demands, although many onboards systems, like hydraulics, food storage and preparation, and electronics nevertheless have their particular power demands. To mitigate the designers have assigned 50m2 solar BIPV surfaces on top of the flat view-towers for best efficiency. Under power the two 1650 kW main engines plus auxiliaries consume 333 litres of mdf per hour at 15 knots and 792 lph at 20 knots. Sailing would be the predominant form of propulsion but during lack of wind, the main engines are necessary. From frequent tank testing and similar-hull comparisons, the designers know that all hulls they have designed fall into the lowest 10% in resistance comparison, of around 60 similar hulls tested, so in low resistance the hulls perform very well.

The uniqueness and innovation behind the Delta One suite is the achievement of an unparalleled Business Class experience with a comfortable, residential feel. Delta is not only the first airline to announce an all-suite Business Class product, but has redefined the way the industry provides customers with a sense of space and privacy without reducing density via increased pitch and seat width. The suite door is not only the first to be announced for all seats in a Business Class cabin, but was the first to be installed on the Airbus A350, certified in compliance with stringent EASA Special Conditions. The unique cabin configuration with the large number of fully-enclosed suites meant that the certification path was different from that required for other previously approved suite arrangements. The Special Conditions drafted for these earlier designs could not be directly applied to the new design. All suites were therefore subjected to dynamic testing as well as the static testing that had been applied to earlier suite door designs to demonstrate an equivalent level of safety. The Delta One suite offers customers travelling on International Business Class unparalleled privacy through the fullyenclosed suite door, sliding privacy divider for centre doubles, and higher walls with a truly modern and customised design aesthetic. The personal space, including dedicated shoe stowage, a larger multitiered console top, and upper stowage unit, allows the suite a more elevated sense of private, personalised openness. As testament to the design effectiveness, the Delta One suite received the coveted 2017 Crystal Cabin Award for best Cabin Concept. The Delta One suite was designed in the context of the wider A350 and 777 cabins to create more private, residential zones onboard without compromising personal space. The interior lighting, trim and finish were selected to maintain focus on the suite’s innovative design and aesthetic while also upholding the aircraft’s light, spacious, and calming feel seen in other Delta One cabins. 56 Luxe et al

Factorydesign’s famed Vantage XL seat has once more proved itself as a premium product as part of Delta One’s new Business Class cabins. The Delta One cabin, which will contain 32 seats, is due to be rolled out aboard Delta’s first A350 craft by September 2017. The seat has been fully customised to incorporate all new features, including additional stowages, a double console for passengers to spread out their belongings, and an 18-inch HD monitor screen – all the while ensuring complete Delta brand identity on-board. With this streamlined design Delta aimed to give an individual, personalised experience for each passenger, with as much comfort and privacy as possible. In terms of the future of air travel, the concept of the “hotel in the sky” is becoming more ubiquitous and with the help of their partners, Delta have set their new product along that path.

THE UNIQUENESS AND INNOVATION BEHIND THE DELTA ONE SUITE IS THE ACHIEVEMENT OF AN UNPARALLELED BUSINESS CLASS EXPERIENCE WITH A COMFORTABLE, RESIDENTIAL FEEL.

Delta Air Lines is the first to announce a Business Class cabin featuring a sliding privacy door on every suite. Designed in partnership with Thompson Aero Seating and Factorydesign, and with an emphasis on exceptional customer comfort and privacy, the Delta One suite offers each customer a private space accessed by a sliding door, with thoughtfully designed personal stowage areas, an advanced in-flight entertainment system and premium trim and finishes. Delta Airlines are celebrating shortlist success of their project, Delta One Suite, at The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2017 in the category of Concept Cabin.

Stockholm based Lars Modin is the designer behind Delta Powerboats, a Swedish luxury brand that recently won the prestigious Boat of the Year award at the London Boat Show. Delta won the same award with another model in 2013. Now Lars Modin is celebrating shortlist success at The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2017 in the category Power Yacht 25-50m with his project Delta 88 IPS. Modin has worked in advertising, designed hand tools and faucets, raced with boats, and he’s taken a pilot’s certificate. He started a company at the height of the dot-com boom, and he’s worked and lived in Monaco as a designer and a yacht broker. He also captained a yacht before co-founding Delta in 2003. Despite all this variety there has been always been one constant in his life: the sea. When Delta was founded the first boats were built at an old factory that made Flipper boats, originally a Swedish brand. A few years later the owners brought in Lennart Alpstål, who owned a factory in Estonia. Modin gave him the rights to the brand, which he owned, while staying on as designer. The first Delta yacht was built in Estonia. This was the first yacht Modin ever designed from scratch, drawing on his whole life experience, including his first boating experiences when he was barely a teenager. Modin’s love of the sea, or in fact any watery environment, was matched by his love of boats, he felt that they gave him

64 Luxe et al

unmitigated freedom. And now his passion is his work, his love has not diminished. Delta Powerboats offer an excellent balance between form and function, and are designed with sustainability in mind. Modin designs every single aspect of Delta’s boats, which allows him to use every weapon in his creative toolbox. He designs the exterior and gets to use his expertise about how the boat should behave on water, how to make it sail best, how to make it environmentally friendly and fuelefficient and, of course, beautiful. Modin is also responsible for the interior design of each vessel allowing him to put that stamp of exclusivity on each Delta creation. His designs are fairly classic using simple lines, unnecessary affectations are avoided. The beds on board are square, not round. The windows are also like regular windows, he restrains from the use of alternatives. He uses stainless steel and other uncluttered materials. Without concern he challenges several myths in the business, like the unadvised use of tinted glass, he uses green and finds that it works fine, even in the dark. The Delta Powerboats 80 IPS is a fast carbon fiber Flybridge cruiser which has room for four guests and two crew cabins. Delta Powerboats had a couple of repeat clients who were asking for bigger boats and it was quite a step up from the Delta 54 to the 80-footer. The clients wanted the same concept as the D54 with an all carbon construction and triple IPS drives for high speed and low consumption with long range.

MODIN’S LOVE OF THE SEA, OR IN FACT ANY WATERY ENVIRONMENT, WAS MATCHED BY HIS LOVE OF BOATS, HE FELT THAT THEY GAVE HIM UNMITIGATED FREEDOM.

The clients believed that it should also have a flybridge, a tender garage, a Sea keeper gyro and the timeless Scandinavian design that is the hallmark of Delta Powerboats. As the designer, Lars Modin’s got the greatest joy from the project when learning of the owner’s utmost satisfaction, so clearly demonstrated as the clients are using the boats extensively. The designer has stated that hull no. 1 was travelling 14,000 nautical miles all over Europe last season and hull no. 3 has been cruising the Caribbean for the last couple of months. Delta Powerboats and Lars Modin believe that the overall design works so well because of its high cruising speed, the Delta 80 IPS are almost always going 30 knots. He believes that the interiors work particularly well due to the 360-degree view that the clients can get from the salon, this also floods the room with natural light. Another great benefit for the clients is that the Delta 80 IPS uses half as much fuel as other yachts that are of a similar size. Over the years, Delta has sold hundreds of boats to clients all over the world. Most of the boats are at least partly custom-made, with minor changes made according to the customer’s wishes. Delta boats are durable and expensive, they are made to be used and not just an expression of the owner’s wealth.

ARTHUR H. GILMORE PRESIDENT & CEO - GILMORE GROUP

Please tell us a little about your background (education, experience etc.).

of design is going, there will be more customization and personalization.

Do you have any predictions for upcoming trends/design directions?

After graduating from Carnegie Mellon with a degree in Industrial Design, I went to work for Dave Ellies, an industrial design firm specializing in the development of the inflight cabin experience for Business Jets. While we were working on a project for Boeing Business Jets, Jet Aviation was contracted as the completion centre, and I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Hirschmann. I was immediately enamoured by the world of jet aircraft design. My first OEM interior design was for the Sikorsky S-76; I developed the interior architecture, lighting, seating, cabinetry, as well as establishing the colours and materials selection and modularizing the interior components (for prospective buyers). I went on to lead programs for numerous OEMS, including Falcon Jet, Boeing, Gulfstream, Hawker, Astrojet, HondaJet, and most recently with Aerion (conceptually). We also did brand building work for Embraer, HondaJet, and Hawker Beechcraft, as well as BMW and others outside the industry. For over 35 years I’ve enjoyed working within various industries managing design programs. Cross-industry experience has allowed me to form a holistic view of design as well as customer-experience strategies.

What is the purpose of the design (planned build, design exhibition etc.)?

The trend towards user-customizability and customer-centricity will continue to increase. Consumers across the board simply expect more. On the business side of things, we need to approach every customer-facing touch-point with as much information and thoughtfulness as we can and no less. That is why our company has decided to work for individual companies.

Please give us a brief overview of your submission for The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2017. We were approached by Aerion Corporation to develop concepts for their supersonic jet aircraft, the AS2. Upon their request, we developed geo-culturally adjusted design concepts of the interior that represented the geographic markets of North America, Europe/Russia, and East Asia/China. This is where the future

66 Luxe et al

Ultimately, the purpose is to bridge the gap that exists between what customers pay for a new a business jet and the experience they receive. This notion guided our approach in creating highly-personalized interiors that incorporate culturally-specific iconography and market-tailored materials & finishes. Our first step was to research High Net Worth Individuals in geographically discrete areas, understand their desires, and translate our findings into strategic concepts. We wanted the concepts to represent the vastly different forms and emotions, the varying levels of comfort and coolness that could be achieved through innovative methods of fabrication. Is there any reason you choose this project in particular to enter into the awards? More than simply being visually-impactful, we see this project as an example of what this industry should look like in the future. It will take vision, and leadership in this industry needs to understand that things are not the same as they were 30 years ago. Technology will allow for “Just in Time” customization far and away more radical than we see today. The truth about the big barrier of certification, is that things can be done to personalize a jet interior without issues if we plan correctly from the start. How much does it cost to develop a new aircraft? What percent of that is spent on the cabin? The use of existing technology such as solid modelling, 3D printing, and CNC machining and will allow for a viable way to create truly differentiated interior.

Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced/affected your work in recent years. In addition to the aforementioned fabrication technologies, the rise of embedded technologies, or IOT, is revolutionizing the interactivity between humans and designed spaces. We are now seeing environments that seamlessly react to customers and users. Without a doubt, this technology will find applications within the private jet aircraft industry soon. It will elevate the passenger journey to new heights of customization and comfort. What do you feel are the biggest challenges the aviation industry will have to face in the future? Dwindling OEM sales of new jet aircraft will have to be addressed. Right now, disruptors in the “travel” industry are encroaching on the antiquated business models of OEMs; there are applications for “flight-sharing” akin to Airbnb and Uber. Innovation, vision, and reinvention are key if new aircraft sales are going to rise.

JOOST WULFFRAAT OWNER - SCHĂ–NINGHWULFFRAAT

Tell us a little about your background (education, experience etc.). I studied industrial design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. After graduation, I went to Milan and worked for the design studios of Bonetto design and Pasqui& Pasini design, here we designed interiors for Alfa Romeo and the FIAT/Lancia group. In 1992 I started as a designer at the Design and Styling Center of Fokker Aircraft. In 1996, together with Marcel Schoningh we started our design studio, with clients from both the yacht and aviation industry. Please give us a brief overview of your submission for The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2017. This year we have entered the Awards with a redesign of a Global express cabin. Our challenge was to create an innovative and attractive design that could achieved without exceptional costs. To achieve this, we used the same structural components of the original structure and thereby avoided major certification issues. The design is based upon clear lines. By integration of the structural elements the cabin gets a spacious and free flowing feeling. Horizontal and vertical lines emphasize the main cabin dimensions. The open Galley / hallway wall creates a feeling of space. Its simplicity combined with high end materials giving the hallway a rich feeling, representing yet another integrating design element of the jet interior. The interior is modest and contemporary and can be styled to customers wishes. Three options are available for the aft area; a double sofa, an office option or a

fully equipped bedroom. What is the purpose of the design (planned build, design exhibition etc.)? This design is focusing on Global express owners that are opting for a refit. What companies have you worked with for the above project? Duncan Aviation supported us with the structural issues and for certification issues we cooperated with 328 support. Is there any reason you choose this project in particular to enter into the awards? This project shows that it is possible to design an appealing commercial refit for the Global Express by combining design engineering and certification. What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? Our industrial design background results in a more integrated three-dimensional approach of the interior design then most interior designers in the market. Do you have any predictions for upcoming trends/design directions? The trend for cabin interiors is lighter shades with less contrast between materials. Jet owners seem to want a rest from all the “information coming at them during their daily lives on the ground, so they opt for more simplicity and ease in their airborne worlds. When private jet owners walk into their cabin, they want to have the same

connectivity as on the ground, cabin technology is constantly improving and allowing for more and more in-flight connectivity, but the expectation always seems to be just a bit ahead of what the market at the time can deliver. Another design trend is the increased demand for privacy within the cabin itself. People have become more solitary, even when sitting close to one another. It used to be a common feature in jets that the interior would have couches either facing each other or directed toward a large screen where everyone would be watching the same movie. Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced/affected your work in recent years. Our 3D work method influences our work in a sense that we are able to communicate more clearly with the engineering and certification departments. It gives us also the possibility to judge our design and colour and trim decisions in real-time which results in a more balanced interior. What do you feel are the biggest challenges the aviation industry will have to face in the future? The conflict of interest between design / innovation and certification. What are your current plans for 2017? We are expanding, we have some really good new people in the team.

MARCO CASALI OWNER - TOO DESIGN

Tell us a little about your background (education, experience etc.).

responsibility for the exterior side and MAG’s for the interior one.

I’ve started drawing boats when I was six. My parents bought an old steel akerboom yacht and I was asking my father to show me all of the boats in the port, then I was designing them. I took my degree in architecture but I wasn’t thinking yacht design could be my work it was just a passion.

Is there any reason you choose this project in particular to enter into the awards?

Please give us a brief overview of your submission for The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2017.

What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors?

We collaborated with MAG design studio creating the exterior design and the main layout for a 60 mt called “D-D” motor yacht focused on a double height space for the saloon. MAG design developed the interior layout and style named Santorini. What is the purpose of the design? The design is a concept created to show how the knowledge of a yacht designer could be combined with the experience of an interior design studio working mainly in the aviation sector. The purpose is clearly to meet the requirements of a client and to develop and build a custom project. What are the key elements of the design? Definitely the double height space in the centre of the yacht emphasized by the big windows but integrated in the sleek design of the exteriors of the yacht.

To celebrate its attitude to breaking the rules and experimenting with new kind of shapes and spaces.

What are your current plans for 2017?

Our passion, we try to design starting from emotions, as we feel that every project works if it makes the owner dream.

This year we will deliver the first units of two new lines with Canados, we are also working on a lot of different projects from 40 to 100mt that will be shown officially in the next boat show season.

Do you have any predictions for upcoming trends/design directions?

And now a little about you:

We need to give more, the yachting experience has to be felt as the best possible time to spend with your family and your beloved. Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced/affected your work in recent years. Innovation in glass and structures has allowed us to obtain a transparency and a connection with the sea that wasn’t possible before. Surely the next challenge is the respect for the environment, and a reduction in the carbon footprint of sailing.

What companies have you worked with for the above project?

What are your favourite recent schemes please describe key elements.

It is a custom project which is our

Among my latest projects I must

68 Luxe et al

mention the Tomahawk 499gt, the ISA 141 Supersportivo and the Canados 808. The first one is a radical explorer yacht inspired by working vessels. The ISA was a challenge for innovating the ISA heritage whilst keeping its classic smooth lines. The Canados 808 is the first project of Canados, a new era and there was huge research in improving volumes and light.

The car you drive: 911 until I could, SUV with 7 seats now Your favourite restaurant: Roman typical restaurants in Trastevere, Rome like Trilussa Best way to relax: Sailing The place that gives you inspiration: Sea and mountains Ideal holiday destination: Cruising; where the wind blows The perfect drink: Bloody Mary Final thoughts or words of wisdom: My motto from Walt Disney “If you can dream it you can do it”

MICHELA REVERBERI OWNER - MICHELA REVERBERI STUDIO

Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience etc.). I graduated in Architecture in Rome. After ten years’ experience in other architecture studios, of which eight were spent in Luigi Sturchio’s office, I started my own firm. What projects are you currently working on? I am developing a project of an 80mt M/Y for Turquoise Yachts, a skyscraper for Vitruvius in Hong Kong and a 7-star resort in Tuscany. What projects have you recently completed? I just completed the refit of 64m S/Y Spirit of the C’s by Perini and the 55m M/Y Quinta Essentia. What companies have you worked with for the above projects? The refit of Spirit was carried out by Compositeworks Shipyard and the construction of Quinta Essentia was carried out by the Italian Sea Group. Where do you feel super yacht design is going in terms of interior schemes? Yacht design years ago drew its main references from the sea and projects were mainly founded on the idea the boats were used to cruise the seas. Despite how luxurious they were, architectonical and design choices were relegated to a small pool of aesthetic referring models, extremely identified and definitely limited compared to the aesthetical, architectonical and technological world available for urban projects. The gap between the two worlds was quite clear.

62 Luxe et al

But as it is instinctual to look further, to experience, to contaminate and to be contaminated, to structure and de-structure, overcome and return, I think more and more that yacht design is going towards the overcoming of this gap.

could look forward, considering that since the beginning the choice of the spotlight was generally inadequate.

Are there any key design directions you would like to discuss?

Music and fun. I enjoy doing what I do and I love working with people I esteem and that share my same passion for their work.

A greater awareness of the emotional potential of any projects that are going to be developed, assuming some risks in overcoming rules. All the choices shall tend to a merge and integration with the environment and a much greater respect for the natural elements that the boat will cross. Trends going forward? A wider coherence between the interior and exterior of yachts until a fade between the boundaries. What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements. I am particularly fascinated in managing potentiality offered by the quantity and dimension of glass surfaces. On Stella Maris, for instance, the dimensions of the windows were amazing and they surrounded the salons on three sides. The project emphasized the verticality of the space, the power of the light, the unusual relationship between empty and full, reinterpreting the diversity and original features of the boat, connecting all elements through a rewriting of rules that govern the arrangement of the spaces and relationship between light and shadow, full and empty. A solution for artificial light had to be found as well at that point, it required a solution that

What products/services could you not live without when designing?

Any final thoughts? I am always ready to face any challenge, without prejudices and preconceptions, in order to achieve projects that look different and I will greatly enjoy. So, a little bit about you: Your favourite place to travel to in the world? All places where I can find new ideas and enjoy my family and friends, but Brazil has a special meaning for me. It is where everything started! All non-places where I can escape in books and dreams. Your favourite hotel/ restaurant/ bar? I feel so happy when I spend my time in some boutique hotels in London, enjoying food in good fish restaurants in Paris and bars on the seaside and looking at the sunset with a glass of wine. I must add a special hotel for me, the Dylan hotel in Amsterdam, where I realized the biggest gift I received in my life was arriving and my life wouldn’t be the same anymore. The place that gives you the most energy? Rome, the city where I live. I love it. Despite its several defects, it remains a very sensual city, able to provide big emotions for me.

The superyacht team at Carkeek Design Partners are dedicated to reshaping the superyacht arena with a level of performance and innovation that will be radical to this exciting market sector.

Carkeek Design’s inspiration is derived from an extensive racing background which places an emphasis on highly optimized performance solutions, not only in the Naval Architecture but also in the design language and optimization of integrated interior and exterior spaces. Their design ethos involves reducing the interior/exterior space to its purest form without compromising the highest level of comfort and elegance.

The Carkeek C 300 Global Explorer was conceived to challenge current superyacht design and performance thinking and, in doing so, introduce a new generation of performance superyachts. The Carkeek C 300 represents a unique skill set for both naval architecture and styling, projecting the Carkeek design ethos. Carkeek Design’s brief was to create a new generation global sailing superyacht with unprecedented performance under both sail and motor over extended distances. The challenge was to develop an exceptional sailing yacht, with the ability to re-shape the current superyacht design arena. Carkeek Design wanted to introduce their technology and extensive Americas Cup, Volvo, Grand Prix racing experience into the superyacht market, but also introduce their unique abilities to combine state-of the art naval architectural skills, hydro and aerodynamic expertise seamlessly with the highest level of design, styling and engineering. The new C 300 is a considerable yacht on all fronts, however their focus was to utilize each space carefully thus creating a variety of equally enjoyable yet unique experiences depending on the time of day or mode/ state of play. In line with the growing demand for ecofriendly yachts, the goal was to produce an efficient, autonomous sailing platform with the lowest energy consumption. The C 300 project involved extensive R&D, harnessing their latest CFD/VPP tools and methodology into the optimization of the hull, rig, appendages and seakeeping, introducing a new direction into the superyacht arena. The concept of the C 300 was a result of a conversation with an experienced owner of a 50m+ sailing yacht wishing to upscale and considering a much larger, state-of-the-art sailing yacht. The goal for this concept was to create an exceptional sailing yacht in all aspects challenging existing thinking and with the strength to re-shape the market trend in both design and engineering. 76 Luxe et al

The C 300 has many unusual features and elements. These include the multi position, adaptable recreational spaces around the yacht to suit all occasions. The design includes the development of many moving parts to allow setting various modes depending on the conditions, time of day and owner or guest requirements. These modes include opening roof structures, aft platforms, and side terraces. The extensive uses of natural ventilation, insulation technology for warm and cool modes, structural glass incorporating the latest solar technologies, are just some the design highlights. Apart from the cutting edge exterior and interior design styling, Carkeek Design Partners have created a large yacht with the look, feel and control of a much smaller vessel. The yacht offers an unprecedented design platform in combination with the propulsion systems, heating, cooling and storage. The system’s design takes full advantage of the latest hybrid technology and retracting propulsion systems. The use of solar power has been maximized on the deck and superstructure. The interior and exterior are designed and optimized to reduce energy consumption. The C 300 will be the largest composite yacht ever to be built. There are only a few yards capable of this and they would need to build a new custom shed and facility for this project alone. Carkeek Design Partner’s vision for the superyacht market is firmly based on creating cutting edge, cool, innovative, iconic and timeless designs. They continuously strive for an outstanding and seamless blend of performance and style.

THE SUPERYACHT TEAM AT CARKEEK DESIGN PARTNERS ARE DEDICATED TO RESHAPING THE SUPERYACHT ARENA WITH A LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE AND INNOVATION.

THE TREMENDOUS CHALLENGE TO BRING THE WORLD’S NEWEST LIGHT JET TO MARKET WITH BEST COMBINATION OF HIGH PERFORMANCE AND HIGH FUEL EFFICIENCY WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY MAXIMISING CABIN VOLUME AND LUGGAGE SPACE.

After decades of hard work Honda Aircraft Company announced that the HA-420 HondaJet received final type certification from the United States Federal Aviation Administration on December 8, 2015. Honda Aircraft Company delivered the first HondaJet on December 23, 2015, just two weeks after receiving the certification. The aircraft is certified for single pilot operation. Michimasa Fujino CEO of Honda Aircraft Company first sketched out the design for the HondaJet in 1997. The Honda Aircraft Company was established in August 2006 with the responsibility for Honda’s overall airframe business strategy and the further development, sales promotion and production of the innovative HondaJet. The first conforming HondaJet flew in December 2010. This has been a longdedicated process. Fujion’s vision was to produce an aircraft under the world-renowned Honda brand, with an over-the-wing mount for the jet engines. This new configuration would provide a quieter cabin and better performance. Another benefit of having the engines mounted on the wings is that the HondaJet has an exceptionally large luggage compartment for an airplane in the light-jet category. As with the production of the parent company’s automobiles, sophisticated automation was involved in the production process, which translates to consistency across the product line. Honda Aircraft are celebrating shortlist success at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2017 in the category Private Jet Design. The HondaJet design incorporates a number of innovations that were developed through extensive research conducted 84 Luxe et al

by Honda. These include the patented HondaJet Over-The-Wing Engine Mount (OTWEM) configuration, Natural Laminar Flow wing and nose, and composite fuselage structure. These advanced technologies allow the HondaJet to achieve the highest speed (420 knots at FL300), highest altitude (43,000 feet), and best fuel efficiency (approximately 15 percent for a typical mission) in its class and make the craft more environmentally friendly. A patented Over-The-Wing Engine Mount (OTWEM) configuration was developed using advanced concepts in aerodynamics and design simulation. The OTWEM configuration eliminates the carry-through structure of conventional fuselagemount designs, allowing for greater use of fuselage space for the cabin and external cargo areas. The configuration is also designed to reduce cabin noise. By optimisation of the design and placement of the engine nacelles, the HondaJet OTWEM configuration actually exhibits less drag at high speeds than conventional “clean wing” designs, contributing significantly to the aircraft’s superior performance and efficiency. A Natural Laminar Flow (NLF) wing and fuselage nose were developed through extensive analyses and wind tunnel testing. These designs help achieve lower aerodynamic drag at high speeds together with a high lift coefficient. An advanced, composite fuselage structure, consisting of a unique combination of honeycomb sandwich and stiffened-panel structures joined using a patented integral co-curing process, reduces weight for optimal performance and payload capacity, while also reducing manufacturing complexity. Honda partnered with Garmin to develop the first highly customised and highly automated avionics suite. HondaJet has a sophisticated flight deck with three 14-inch landscape displays and two touchscreen controllers that allow pilots enhanced navigation, flight planning and system control. The passenger cabin of the HondaJet got equal attention from designers and they made maximum use of the space available. While the normal number of occupants is six, one of them the pilot, a seventh side-facing seat can be installed opposite the main entry door. To add some utility to this seat, when the cabin door is closed, one of its steps cleverly folds out to make a table for the side-facing passenger. The luxurious cabin provides exceptional legroom, dimmable windows,

an optional cabin management system and more. Honda Aircraft expects the most popular configuration to be the executive version, with leather seats and an underseat storage drawer. The main cabin area is a 12.1-foot-long space that provides plenty of room for passengers and has the club seating arrangement giving ample legroom. The enclosed lavatory is far superior to that of many light jets, some of which section the toilet area off with a simple curtain. While the HondaJet’s lavatory is not huge, it provides complete privacy, a basin with a faucet activated by a motion sensor, and two skylights providing natural light and a unique perspective of the skies above. The business jet is fast becoming a common tool for business people. In particular, the small business jet that is more efficient in operation is expected to become more popular. Market surveys and focus-group interviews, conducted in five major cities in the United States, show that demand for comfort, in particular, a large cabin, as well as high fuel efficiency are critical to the success of small businessjet development. The HondaJet is designed to satisfy these needs, and the result is an aircraft whose exterior and interior are not only stunning but also highly intelligent. Honda took on the tremendous challenge to bring the world’s newest light jet to market with best combination of high performance and high fuel efficiency while simultaneously maximising cabin volume and luggage space. It is the world’s most advanced light jet and it brings new value to the light jet market. Through the experience of developing and certifying a clean-sheet aircraft design, one can truly appreciate the complexity of technologies, depth of safety requirements and people’s unique skills within aviation industry. It is an unimaginable experience that not many people have the opportunity to experience this in their lifetime. The HondaJet design incorporates new technologies and concepts that bring true, new value to the light jet segment. The end result is a beautiful aircraft that delivers a lifestyle benefit to customers - superior performance without compromising comfort and efficiency. Honda products are recognised for superior fuel efficiency. With the HondaJet, they wanted to accomplish in aviation what the Honda Civic achieved in the U.S. market. Introduce a product that brings real, new value to consumers; the Honda Civic accomplished this by being a small, compact car with superior fuel efficiency. The HondaJet is up to 17 percent more fuel efficient than other light jets in its class.

Delta’s signature blue glass backdrop greets guests at the reception desk where dedicated Club ambassadors provide personalised assistance. The fluid shapes found throughout the Club’s design pay homage to the Pacific Northwest’s waterways and move through the reception and customer service areas, creating a natural flow that draws guests to the centre of the lounge. The lounge spans two levels with an open floor plan, 30-foot ceilings with curved panelling, two dramatic floating staircases and a mezzanine level with an art gallery. The twisting mezzanine meshes seamlessly with the gently curved ceiling, mirroring the layout of The Bar below. The most innovative and sustainable feature in the Club is the energy-efficient, electrically tinted windows manufactured by View Dynamic Glass. These intelligent windows with electrochromic glass keep the Club temperature and sunlight at optimal levels, reducing energy costs, eliminating the need for window coverings and allowing guests to stay connected to the outdoors. They have tinting that can be automatically controlled through light sensors on the building’s exterior or manually controlled through a smartphone app. The blue windows also integrate perfectly with Delta’s brand colours. The Club’s furnishings come from some of the top furnishing manufacturers in the world, including Boss Designs, Keilhauer, Knoll and Steelcase. Though the space features an open design, the designers managed to achieve a balance between space-efficiency and privacy with strategic furniture arrangements, quiet work areas and custom divider screens which maximise privacy without blocking light. The Delta Sky Club team worked with Boss Designs to create custom-made sofas with high walls for privacy, conveniently integrated power

outlets and luxuriously upholstered Scottish leather from Muirhead. They also kept the views of Mount Rainer in mind when creating the seating layout for the entire Club, from the dining area to the mezzanine level, making every seat seem like the best seat in the house. The bespoke banquette in the centre of the Club was created by the Club’s in-house design team to create versatile gathering places, including both intimate areas for solo travellers and casual, conversational areas for larger groups. Guests can choose from large, circular tables, individual seats divided by powered armrests made of solid walnut, powered cyber bars and two American black walnut live edge tables with brushed stainless legs. The walnut tables complement the stacked walnut wall at the Club’s entrance, and the tables’ live edge detail further echoes the Pacific Northwest region and the flowing curves found throughout the space. The banquette was intentionally crafted using dimensions and materials typically found in residential environments for maximum durability in a high traffic environment and maximum comfort for travellers on long layovers. The Bar at Delta Sky Club offers a variety of premium and complimentary beverage options including Washington wines, locally inspired cocktails, IPA craft beer, a self-serve espresso machine and freshly brewed Starbucks coffee. One challenge the designers faced during the design process was figuring out how to work around a Washington state liquor law that prohibits seating from being located directly at bars in airport lounges. The solution was to create a large, central island which creates an informal gathering space for guests to swap stories about their travels while sipping on custom crafted cocktails. The island’s surface is made of terrazzo with large flecks of cobalt blue glass and it’s surrounded by roomy leather stools with molded walnut backings. Arguably The Bar’s most striking feature is the backlit backdrop made blue Kimono silk glass by LivingGlass. The Club also has a full-sized kitchen and buffet area intentionally designed to flow with the rest of the Club, highlighting Seattle’s culinary culture by featuring exclusive menu items by acclaimed Chef Ethan Stowell. The dining tables are evenly spaced to offer plenty of privacy, and conveniently placed, custom power poles provide outlets throughout the dining area.

Delta Air Lines opened Seattle’s second Delta Sky Club on 21 October 2016 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) at the intersection of Concourses A and B, adjacent to Gate A1. The SEA Club provides an inviting environment and every detail represents Delta’s commitment to ensuring the best possible customer experience. This project has been shortlisted in The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2017 in the category of Airport Lounge. The Club features modern décor, picturesque views of Mount Rainier, six shower suites (designed with long-haul customers in mind) and more than 400 seats, making it a relaxing environment for guests to touch down before, after and between flights. The interior design for the project was the responsibility of Seattle based ECH Architecture.

Black Sea Yachts aim to make their customers’ dreams a reality, to encapsulate a passion for the sea and about the yacht. All works from project creation to launching of boats on the water are carried out by their experts directly at the shipyard. One of the unique features of their shipyard is that they build with equal skill and quality both motor and sailing yachts. With worldclass marine engineers they are able to create a complete project of any complexity. For many yachts built by the shipyard, their specialists develop individual projects. A team of experienced engineers and designers constantly works with the client. This ensures that even the smallest detail is given absolute consideration. In addition, they have a very careful approach to the interior design of the future yacht. All decisions are visualised and tested, and are approved and accepted at each stage in the work. In the lifetime of the shipyard they are proud to be able to say that they have not created any duplicate yachts, each project is individual, and they work tirelessly to ensure that the performance and finish of the yachts exceeds expectations. This individuality is expanded further as almost all of the furniture for the yachts is made entirely in the shipyard. Black Sea Yachts are now proudly celebrating shortlist success at The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2017 to be held in Venice, in the category Power Yacht 24-40m with their project BSY90. This luxurious 27 Metre motor yacht from Black Sea Yachts shipyard is a fine example of “timeless classics”.

She is graceful and elegant and was to be designed to achieve the most comfortable sea travel. Constructed with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, BSY 90 was designed by the in-house team at the shipyard, with a unique interior as per the owner’s wishes. With regards to her performance, she will be powered by twin Volvo Penta D9 MH 425hp engines, giving her a speed of 11.8 knots with a range of 3,000 nm at a cruising speed of 9 knots. Almost panoramic windows give excellent visibility and provide an abundance of natural light internally, this feature along with the dual glass ensures safety and excellent soundproofing. While designing the interiors of this motor yacht, the engineers and designers were challenged to create an atmosphere of originality and comfort. The purpose of the design was to provide a feeling of cosiness and safety to every guest so that their time on the BSY 90 is one of rest and luxurious relaxation. There is an exquisite combination of American Walnut wood throughout the yacht combined with beige Italian leather which perfectly demonstrates the spirit of style and taste. Black Sea Yachts Shipyard have provided one large luxury cabin for the owner, three cabins for guests as well as two cabins for the crew on board the BSY 90. The yacht also comes with a Williams 3 tender. On 14 September 2016 the yacht was launched in the traditionally Orthodox manner. Those in attendance commented on the beauty and quality of the new yacht. The yacht was built according to the project Design Bureau of the Black Sea Yacht shipyard under the supervision of RINA. All Black Sea yachts are built under the supervision of the European Classification Societies. The entire process of construction is carefully monitored – from the working drawings to launching the boat. Black Sea Yachts believe that each boat, like a person, is an individual. The construction or purchase of a yacht requires an individual approach. This is what they offer. Individual approach. Individual construction. The yacht, which will fully meet the wishes and aspirations of the client.

BLACK SEA YACHTS AIM TO MAKE THEIR CUSTOMERS’ DREAMS A REALITY, TO ENCAPSULATE A PASSION FOR THE SEA AND THE YACHT.

A RELAXED LUXURY YACHT EXPERIENCE.

Turkish shipyard, Mengi-Yay, launch the all-new 34m motor yacht REM in June 2016. The naval architecture and design was the work of famous Turkish designer Ibrahim Karatas of Karatas Yacht Design, who worked very closely with the highly experienced owner to create a yacht that is fitting with his personal taste. Mengi-Yay Shipyard was responsible of the production, Makomin was responsible for the interior concept, and Tufan and Brothers managed the whole building process. M/Y REM is a new generation semi displacement hull motor yacht with an economic and medium speed regime. She gives exceptional views through the full height main deck windows and sliding doors. The experienced boat owner’s wish was to have a boat with economic cruising and a medium top speed when needed. The idea was that she would have a dynamic and purposeful look and a very close relationship to the sea. REM’s interior configuration has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests overnight in 5 cabins. She is also capable of carrying up to 5 crew onboard, to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience. Thanks to the semi displacement hull with tested bulbous bow geometry, the twin speed regime makes it possible for this 33-metre yacht, to cruise at 12 knots, maximum 17 knots. She has a range of 1400 nautical miles, which allows the owner to plan longer trips as she can carry around 20,480 of diesel on-board in her fuel tanks and her water tanks store around 4,810 of fresh water. A forward bulging bulwark creates a private balcony for the owner and makes it possible to see the sea through the sliding doors and cleverly positioned glass insert in the bulwark. The owner’s cabin, found forward on the main deck, has 270 degrees of visibility on the sides and a great view of the sky through the enormous skylight directly above the king-size bed. Motorised curtains can provide absolute black out when necessary and a fixed balcony on either side of the suite makes the area feel incredibly spacious. The two VIP cabins and two guest cabins at lower deck have great visibility and fresh air through the oversized triple portholes. The flybridge is fairly spacious with seating room and hardtop with a perforated ceiling. There is a garage for the yacht’s tender in the transom for easy use.

106 Luxe et al

REM’s interior is the work of famous Turkish architect Derya Akdurak, of Makomin, who styled the yacht to resemble a soothing beach house environment with eclectic touches and family home functionality. Tones of crisp white and arctic blues immediately create a calming atmosphere as one enters the main saloon. Karatas Yacht Design’s favourite aspects of the project include; the owners’ area which has great visibility through the private balcony and skylight, the saloon and inside dining with full height windows and sliding doors to create the relaxed feeling with a great view, and the twin speed regime, economical and fast speeds. Ibrahim Karatas’ inspiration for design is the awareness that every possible item that a modern human being is in contact with today has been processed through design, and that it is the simplicity and function of a design that determines success. He believes of course in the beauty of design, but is also very conscious that the lifespan of every object has been shortened as the trends in design are changing so fast. His designs incorporate the understanding that the lifespan of a yacht should also be considered in this way. Whilst owners fall in love with their boats and tend not to change them frequently it is imperative that they are offered the best that is possible, economic performance with the utmost comfort. Ibrahim’s designs consider the inclusion of organic shapes, optimisation of space, transparency in the relationship with owner and individualisation to ensure that the owner’s needs are met and exceeded, and due care and attention to the economics of the project and the running of the vessel as it sets sail. His advice to owners would be to not try to make a copy of anything. His advice to fellow designers is to try to blend a higher number of disciplines before sketching a new idea. REM has been shortlisted in The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2017 in the category Power Yacht 25-40m. Ibrahim Karatas believes that the Awards provide a good ground to present the latest works of designers and this allows the industry to become aware where the trend is going.
