As always, we have toured he globe to bring you the best in design schemes that are as diverse as they are inspiring, and range from waterside residences to sleek architectural statements and hightech homes. For me it is this essential mix of style and interpretations that makes life interesting and design something that consistently challenges our mind and broadens our perspectives. On a personal note, I am delighted to see Kathleen Hay’s work back in design et al once again. We first worked with Kathleen ten or twelve years ago, featuring her New York schemes and some very contrasting Nantucket homes;
I was so impressed with her elegant take on a more traditional Nantucket style, that I took a trip to the island. A short hop from New York by a small plane, it remains one of my favourite holiday destinations. Her project in this issue was shortlisted in 2018 and a close runner up in its category and certainly remains one of my favourites in the competition. Next month we bring you more shortlisted projects ahead of the 2019 International Design & Architecture Awards. Until then, Joanne

“Intentional and innovative space planning was key to filling the vast, open floor plan with a natural flow of intimate gathering areas to enhance the family feel within a grand residence.”
A contemporary beach house that blends luxurious city style with the comfort and casualness of living by the sea. Sophisticated city living meets the ease and calmness of living by the sea in this 12,710-square-foot new build on the bay in Newport Beach, CA. Thanks to the client’s collaborative approach, Rob Sinclair’s thoughtful architecture, and builder Andrew Patterson’s “new standard” mentality, Blackband Design were able to optimise the interior design in each space through both form and function. Intentional and innovative space planning was key to filling the vast, open floor plan with a natural flow of intimate gathering areas to enhance the family feel within a grand residence. Deep earth tones, layered textures and relaxed furnishings soften the crisp white and charcoal framework and reflect the natural beauty of the surrounding harbour. Blackband mixed the glam of metallic tiles with the nostalgia of Tabarka terracotta tiles creating a multi-dimensional design within a contemporary setting. Two gourmet kitchens, two game rooms, two bars, a home theatre and the luxury of indoor/outdoor living make this home an entertainer’s dream. Project Newport Waterfront’s main gourmet kitchen is equally impressive in pristine aesthetics and immense square footage as it is in culinary utility. High gloss white lacquered cabinetry and stainless-steel framed glass doors line the perimeter of the kitchen with a custom-cut Thassos marble backsplash. White SubZero and Miele appliances offer a state-of-theart cooking experience while blending seamlessly into the cabinets. A sleek, waterfall-edged marble countertop surrounds one kitchen island housing a sink and two dishwashers, while rich stained planks wrap the storage-filled second island bringing in a layer of warmth to the dual-island layout.

Thoughtfully sourced game tables elevate the recreational spaces to be in sync with the overall home design. The home theatre showcases indigo cloth sound panels framing surf photography backlit from the sides and a larger-than-life screen for the ultimate cinematic experience from the comfort of the subterranean sectionals. A master suite, complete with a canopy bed draped in soft linens and a pair of daybeds overlooking the bay, provides a serene retreat when the guests are gone. Lined with white glass heated floors and custom millwork, the master bathroom exemplifies quality performance and craftsmanship from the first step and look inside. A steam shower, soaking tub and sauna offer an array of destinations to fully relax and refuel. A skylight reaching a story above pours natural light into the bathroom and showcases the custom chandelier that cascades light of its own. His and hers water closets and vanities ensure the luxury of personal space and enrich the symmetry of the bathroom’s layout. Steel-framed windows and skylights throughout the home illuminate all four stories and highlight the precision of custom wood finishes in each room. The variety of materials used throughout this home come together to create a beautiful gem on the water. This design works so well because it is a mix of several styles that all work together to give unique and timeless character to the contemporary home. The furniture and material selections are unexpected and set this home apart from any beach house on the block. The flow of the floor plan is comfortable and cohesive with the size and scale of each room creating a liveable space. The incredible attention to detail, from both an aesthetic and functional point of view, that the Blackband team poured into this project is apparent with one tour through the space. Blackband Design designed and custom made many of the furnishings throughout the home to achieve the perfect look
and fit for each space. The millwork is custom by Patterson Custom Homes. A 1,200-gallon saltwater aquarium in the living room showcases custom hand-made coral reef, acid washed stainless steel cabinetry and a Tesla battery backup. Every space in the home was designed with the bay views and coastal surround in mind. Each furniture layout was strategically created to maximize the comfort of enjoying the scenes out the windows while still maintaining a natural flow of furnishings from the doorway. The earth tones that make up the colour palette for the home plays off the beautiful blues, greens and tans displayed outside. Subtle nods to nautical elements such as the marine fossil hung in the dining room and the deep-sea tile in the master sitting room offer a connection to the coastal theme without sacrificing the home’s sophisticated style. Blackband Design have recently been shortlisted in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2019 with Project Newport Waterfront. Speaking about the shortlisting success, Katie Kass, Director of Marketing at Blackband Design said “the Awards are important because they hold a standard for globally appreciated design. Gathering the most impressive designs from around the world provide us with newfound inspiration outside of our reach. This promotes design curiosity and continually elevates creative professionals’ work.” This home stands alone in scale, features and personalised details in Blackband Design’s 15 years of experience in the design industry. They feel every challenge presented through the process gave them the opportunity to grow and advance the design further. Kass stated “It was an honour collaborating with the thoughtful clients and the talented teams of Patterson Custom Homes and Sinclair Associates Architects.”

“Kathleen’s favourite aspect of the project is the sense of whimsy in the furnishings combined with the drama of the living areas and kitchen which make for an unexpected impact.”
Sophisticated. Organic. Fresh. Hip. Sea Myst, the name given to this house in Nantucket, lives up to the design mandate: Create a house in which a blended family and their friends can gather in luxurious comfort. Captivated by the sea, blessed by the sun, the homeowner, a restaurant owner in Boston and Nantucket, is the definition of a “Saltie Girl” with fond memories of cooking with her family from the bountiful waters and land of the island 30 miles offshore of Massachusetts known as Nantucket. From spending summers on a sailboat with her father to working at a candy shop located in the space she would later buy for her island restaurant, Nantucket has always been a magical place for her. She and her husband bought a plot of land on the island just steps from the quintessential cobblestones of downtown and handpicked an awardwinning team to build her dream house in 2017. Award-winning designer Kathleen Hay specialises in high-end residential projects. She believes strongly that houses need to be appropriate to their setting, their time, and their owner. The goal of her work ultimately is a beautiful environment — one that reflects both the family that occupies its spaces and the professional vision that guided its completion. Her brief for this project was to design a house by the sea that exudes the relaxed vibes of long, languorous summer days. The house is clad in cedar shingles, intrinsic to the island of Nantucket, so it blends into the landscape seamlessly. The scale is minimized by the storey30 design et al
and-a-half design, so that although large and generous inside, the house does not overshadow its neighbours or overwhelm the scale of the small island. The gourmet kitchen needed to meet restaurant standards to allow for beautiful, delectable spreads of food and drink. On a warm summer evening, the house is abuzz with family – and the adopted family some would call her restaurant staff – sharing stories of their most coveted travels, and admiring the view of the salty, sea from the Widow’s Walk perch on the rooftop. The interior of the house is a symphony of neutrals whose luscious textures excite the senses. Added unexpected elements, like the champagne cork stools in the bar area or the African Juju tribal hat, bring a sense of quirkiness and visual interest. The ample indoor and outdoor living areas allow for seamless entertaining of groups large and small with a living room that opens onto the adjacent dining terrace and pool beyond. The large living room was divided into three distinct spaces to allow for entertaining on different scales, so that when not entertaining the family could enjoy cosy evenings by the fire. The house is filled with furnishings and objects that give a nod to its nautical location. This special home contains two master suites for ultimate guest comfort, in addition to four other generous guest suites. The large open floor plan maximizes entertaining space and is ready to welcome groups small and large. Kathleen’s favourite aspect of the project is the sense of whimsy in the furnishings combined with the drama of the living
areas and kitchen which make for an unexpected impact. The sophisticated, yet relaxed quality of the interior is a welcome and artful balance of serious and playful. The house exudes a hip and beachy vibe and “no fuss” attitude. The combined indoor/outdoor shower in the master bath is the piece de resistance! The symmetry in the design and the balance and proportion of the spaces makes the house visually pleasing. It is dramatic without being overwhelming, and warm without losing its appeal. Much consideration was given to how this particular family lives, and the outcome of the flow through the rooms and spaces is testament to the good planning of the Kathleen Hay design team. Speaking with Kathleen Hay, Principal Designer, about this project she said “We are privileged to work on the island of Nantucket, with its storied history and strict building codes. It is a very special place in the world, a sandy spit a mere 14 miles long and 3 miles wide, that attracts the well-heeled to its sandy shores. This home exudes all that is wonderful about island living.” Having been shortlisted in The International Design and Architecture Awards 2019, Kathleen explained “The Awards are a celebration of great design and amazing properties worldwide. They honour the craft and skill of the many artisans, artists, designers, and architects working around the globe.”

DESIGNER INTERVIEW
MARTHA HUK Hedgeford & Berkley Founder, Hedgeford & Berkley www.hedgefordandberkley.com
Martha Huk of Hedgeford & Berkley began her career as a mechanical engineer, originally specialising in propulsion cooling for military vehicles. She soon found herself working as a design engineer during the day and renovating houses before, and after work. As renovations became more complex, the need to have well laid out plans became imperative and Martha wondered why so many construction companies lacked a regard for elevating style while planning the details. After leaving her day job, Martha has been building a firm that carefully balances the technical and creative facets of the construction world. How would you describe your personal interior design style? My style is geared around creating a sense of awe. I design a room to be beautiful on its own, then even more so when layered with furniture. I look for visual interest in materials themselves or some reason of why the space would evoke an emotion. My design style focuses on highlighting functionality because if the room doesn’t allow you to do what you need to, you will soon tire of its beauty. I like to use natural materials such as wood and stone because there is a draw for me to its exclusivity. Literally nobody else will have what you have, and that, in itself, is special. I venture more to streamlined, luxurious designs that are both chic and sophisticated. A combination of modern without being cold and contemporary without being trendy. Where does your design inspiration come from? Everywhere. I was recently in a theatre and inspired by its luxurious fabrics. The soft yet vibrant colours will be seen in our next 32 design et al
collection. You never know what dots will be connected until you expose yourself to different environments. That’s the beauty of inspiration. It can take just a moment for inspiration to propel a design forward. What direction do you feel design is moving towards in general terms? I think we are pushing design into realms of the unbelievable. Testing the limits of materials and using them to create structures that provide a next level of living. We’re asking more “why not” questions and that’s challenging us to think bigger in the design field. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in the future: 1. What emotion are you wanting to evoke 2. What does the design need to accomplish - function wise 3. What added functions can be created to enhance the user experience further 4. What added aesthetic can be added to enhance the emotional connection further 5. What is the unexpected element that moves the design from ordinary to extraordinary. How important are The Design Awards as recognition of talent and achievement? When I started this design firm, I had one goal: Develop an unparalleled client experience while creating next level designs with flawless execution. Every project we do challenges us in a way that pushes our boundaries with what is possible. I want every client experience to be like no other. I want our designs to be a knockout and our build procedure to be the smoothest. Never did I think we would stop for a minute to see that our work had been recognised in such a prestigious
event. The experience is still surreal. We have grown from being a nobody to being called to sit in a room amongst the World’s leading designers. Sitting in a room that we didn’t know if we’d ever be called to belong in. See the easy way will always be there, it’s awards like these that remind us of the importance of being the finest at our crafts. What projects are you currently working on? We are currently designing an addition to a historical house in London. This remodel focuses on creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. We are also about to unveil the finale of a commercial design for an optometrist clinic where the client gave us full reign of creative freedom. After that, we will be working with a client to turn their current home into a holiday destination as a method for increasing their revenue. Another fun side project is the further design development of Hedgeford & Berkley headquarters which will really showcase what we’re capable of. The place that gives you most inspiration? Anywhere when on a holiday. I find that just getting out of the office allows me to cross into a different way of thinking. You can allow your thoughts to wander for an extended amount of time. In fact, if it wasn’t for the break we took to design our Spring projects, I wouldn’t be here talking to you. It was only because I took a break to dream, that I found for the courage to submit our portfolio to the Design Awards. And here we are.

“The sleek design of the cabinetry to blend and streamline the overall design of the project allows the industrial feel of the kitchen to be brought forward, aided by the choice of tapware and furniture.”
Located in Saskatoon, Canada, the project was designed as a brand-new walkout show home in their latest development. Royalty Construction were given the brief of making the development unique in style with a focus on the kitchen, to make a statement and be eye-catching. Royalty Construction, the developer of the project, had to keep in mind the property was not for a specific client and as such had to ensure that the design would appeal to different types of families and what a potential buyer’s need’s and style might be. The designer was given the challenge of bringing a unique atmosphere to the kitchen to ensure that this was the focal point of the property. Saskatoon, straddling the South Saskatchewan River, is an ideal location for a new development for young and established families alike. The design of the kitchen was by Jillian Lay, lead designer of Royalty Construction. Jillian brought an aged New York loft feel to the kitchen design, with a touch of masculine, but still elegant and most of all functional. The project design brings a sense of community to the development, benefitting from the open floor plan and the island in the centre of the design. The grey quartz countertops, that were designed to resemble concrete, helped with developing the masculine feel of the project whilst also becoming an inviting space for hosting a gathering or baking in the open kitchen. Speaking of the island, Jillian Lay said “the large island really adds to the center and gathering point for the whole main area.” The custom stain colours for the walnut doors and pine planking beautifully ties together the refined industrial style of the overall project. This brings together the inviting, classic space with the modern industrial feel of the sleek cabinetry. A major contribution in this kitchen was having professional level appliances
40 design et al
that fit every lifestyle within the kitchen. They combined forward design and lasting engineering, which is essential in a kitchen design for a young family. The timelessness of the white brick added to the overall sense of calm and the homely feel within the kitchen. When discussing the effectiveness of the project, Jillian felt that “this kitchen paired effectively with the open concept of the floor plan. Having 10 ft ceilings allowed for this kitchen design to be completely balanced and yet stated in the space.” The open floor plan invited the residents to gather in the kitchen, making it a communal space and focal point of the property.
with the starting point of the metal/ glass barn doors. With having enough functional space in this layout, it allowed for a creative feature to anchor and complement this kitchen design.” The kitchen is equipped with generous storage throughout the design, ensuring that it is an easy match for any family. The open shelving provided available space within the project; it allows the owner to add their own creative flair of style, to create the perfect balance. This was assisted by the spatial design of the project, developing a welcoming, flowing feeling to accommodate the open plan format of the entire property.
Refined Industrial has been shortlisted for the International Design and Architecture Awards 2019 in the Interior Design Categories - Kitchen Design over fifty thousand pounds. Speaking about the International Design and Architecture Awards 2019, the lead designer Jillian Lay said “Having international awards allows that unity to be appreciated and highlighted. Adding combinations of different cultures, languages and lifestyles can create beautiful and remarkable results in design and architecture. It allows for creativity to have no boundaries or limits.”
Royalty Construction are an experienced team that have worked on both residential and commercial property development. They have worked throughout the Saskatoon area since 1982, developing show homes and commercial spaces alike. As lead designer, Jillian Lay believes that professional design is critical in their mission, along with the experience of the whole team at Royalty Construction. Within all their projects, the fixtures are carefully chosen to be beautiful, functional and unique. They add layers to their developments and the design of the projects, with a consistent sense of functionality. Led by Jillian Lay, the design of the projects have the client at heart, ensuring that the project is not only beautiful, but functional and adaptable to their needs.
In delivering this show home kitchen, Royalty Construction have developed a wider sense of inclusion throughout the project. The sleek design of the cabinetry to blend and streamline the overall design of the project allows the industrial feel of the kitchen to be brought forward, aided by the choice of tapware and furniture. The fully integrated fridge allowed for the cabinetry to stand out as almost as if it were a piece of furniture; a beautiful design to add to the overall aesthetic of the kitchen. Jillian Lay described her favourite aspect of the project as “the fact that this entire kitchen was designed
The shortlisted Refined Industrial kitchen is a project born of the same concept; functional design paired beautifully with a modern, inviting atmosphere, yet adaptable for a family to grow and make their mark on their new home.

“When deciding on the colours of the project, in order to compliment the surroundings, Gillian decided on a watery blue palette with accents of teal and chamomile yellow, so that the colours were not overpowering in contrast to the vibrancy of the natural landscape.”
Located in cottage county, a two hour drive north east of Toronto, lies the Canadian Lakeside Cottage project that Gillian Gillies completed the interior design of, for a client that would be using the property all throughout the year. Completed in 2018, the property was purchased by the client in the Autumn of 2017 as an escape from the busy city life of Toronto for themselves, their family and friends. As the property sits right on the lake, Gillian Giles had to be first and foremost respectful to the exterior landscape. As all the rooms of the property have lakeside views, the challenge was to use a colour pallette that did not detract from the beauty of the nature surrounding the property. As the clients gave the brief of an escape from their busy weekday city life, the furnishings had to be not only good looking and comfortable, but very liveable; the space had to feel inviting and relaxing for all guests who enter the property. When deciding on the colours of the project, in order to compliment the surroundings, Gillian decided on a watery blue palette with accents of teal and chamomile yellow, so that the colours were not overpowering in contrast to the vibrancy of the natural landscape. Mixed metals were paired with woven accents that have a grounding and simplifying effect throughout the home. It is an incredibly tactile space that has a mix of patterns and textures that all combined to ensure that the living areas were a beautiful space to be in but be above all else, comfortable. With views of the lake extending out from the property, the blues of the furniture and furnishings reflect the surrounding waters perfectly. The open plan layout of the property allows for a much more open and free flowing
50 design et al
atmosphere to the property, aiding the brief to be comfortable and inviting to all. The side tables and dining table mirrored the down to earth feel of the project. They are primarily painted wood and natural elements, creating a cottage escape that is easy on the eye. Describing the space and elements used in the project, Gillian stated “The living spaces are incredibly bright, and we selected materials that are fade resistant.” The resistance of the elements included was an important factor, as the temperature throughout the year range wildly, dropping well below freezing and soaring high in the summer. With large windows to allow natural light to soar in, the furnishings and fabrics had to be robust. Designed by Gillian Gillies of Gillian Gillies Interiors, the Canadian Lakeside Cottage project has been shortlisted in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2019 in the Living Space Global category. Gillian, a prominent interior designer hailing originally from Edinburgh but working in Toronto, said of the awards that “They provide a global awards platform. I believe that they encourage diversity and broaden our outlook.” Her design style features consistent elements of symmetry and spatial awareness along with a happy dose of eclectic playfulness. This is evident within the shortlisted project, which features a mix of a calming aesthetic with a playful nature displayed through the artwork chosen. The artwork was carefully chosen so that it could be long lasting and would survive through the varying weather conditions of the area. It had to be suitable for the bright sunshine of Ontario summers and the freezing winters that follow.
The project had to not only accommodate the owners of the property but also their family and friends. Meaning that the project had to be durable and be able to be used throughout the year. Durability and functionality is a large factor in all of Gillian’s projects, ensuring that they are not only aesthetically pleasing but also are going to last. Her favourite aspect of this particular project is the artwork. “Art always brings soul and dimension to our design schemes.” The artwork chosen in this project follows this statement, with a connection being established between the property and the lakeside location being established through the choice of art in the living space. As a design that was tailored for her clients and their exacting needs, maintaining the clear brief was important. Gillian has successfully implemented the delicate balance between the comfortable, year round living space whilst maintaining a design style that is complementary to the natural surroundings of the property. Whether swimming in or skating on the lake, the interior easily accommodates the conditions and presents a welcoming atmosphere upon the residents return. The lake itself is a viewpoint from all windows and acts as an anchor point in all the rooms, again allowing for the balance between the exterior and the interior. The project is a perfect combination of summer time scape and cosy cottage in the winter. It is a place to entertain friends on weekend trips, whilst still feeling like a home. Enjoyed throughout the year, this a home that is now cherished by its owners.

“The mixture of the designers style and the clients family needs is what makes this property fit perfectly into the design brief provided by the client.”
Hameau Boileau, an old photography studio in a detached house in Paris, has been transformed into a family home. M|A|G Designs were given the brief of creating a clear and simple design scheme for the property. A balanced approach to the design was required to ensure that essential elements were included to create a homely feel to the project, without cluttering the property with unnecessary furniture. As a former owner of a flower shop, the client gave a brief of ensuring the project was sensitive of the natural environment with this integrating well into the project. The project has been designed by Mathilde Grouvel, director of M|A|G Designs. It was shortlisted in the International Design and Architecture Awards 2019 in the Residential £1-2.5 Million Category. When speaking of the awards, she described how they allow for “better international PR and design sharing communication.” Mathilde described the shortlisted project as “airy, bright, simple but with a personality.” This is evident throughout the project. The use of large windows to allow natural light to flood in is complemented by the open plan structure and use of contrasting colour choices throughout the design. The walls were painted white to create a blank canvas, allowing the bold colour choices for furnishings and plants to become eye-catching and prominent within the design. The ceiling height of the project created volume within the property, again creating a spacious and open feel. This was extended throughout the property, allowing for the design to flow from room to room and encourage the homely atmosphere to permeate the different areas of the house.
58 design et al
The shell shaped rug in the living space of the property was chosen to evoke all the natural elements that have been included within the project. This combined well with the flowers scattered throughout the rooms. The lighting pendant in the living space resembles the branches of a tree, merging the industrial to the natural. Mathilde described Hameau Boileau as “one of my favourite projects showing that with a few elements you can create a warm & homely design scheme.” The comfortable, liveable atmosphere within the project was to be an essential element of the design. The metal staircase, created by skilled Italian craftsmen specifically for this project, adds an industrial element to the overall plan of the property. The furniture and artwork in the living space features bold colours, to stand out against the white canvas of the walls and flooring. This meant that bursts of life and vibrance flowed throughout the already bright property. The kitchen within the project was designed to be very space conscious. A clean colour palette of soft grey tiled floors and clean, white walls and surfaces couple nicely with the pop of colour from the red chair and plant life included within the room. The fixtures and cabinets are designed to present the most elegant of design style. They are understated, whilst maintaining a modern twist and space efficiency to maximise the unique design of the building. The use of the dark contrast wall on the upper level allowed for a change in decor for this area of the project. On this level bold, eye-catching colours such as deeper reds are used to compliment the aubergine colour used on the wall. This
brings out the personality of the project; a bright, welcoming property with deeper layers throughout. It is simple and airy but brings out the deeper details of the space. A Paris based interior designer, M|A|G Designs believe in involving their clients in the conception of their interior design projects. They take into consideration the client’s lifestyle, their work, taste and requirements. Their design style focuses on elegant and harmonious interiors which are open to modern trends but in line with the client’s personality. By integrating the personality of their client into the project, M|A|G Designs create truly personal interiors that reflect the lifestyle and the ideology of those in the property. They work internationally across various properties, both residential and commercial, to provide an exceptional design experience. Working closely with architects from different countries they design a broad range of projects, from their shortlisted Hameau Boileau to the London Lalique Showroom. In this project, Mathilde was able to bring together her own personal design style, the personality of her clients and a functionality that allowed for the family to grow and be comfortable in their home. The mixture of the designers style and the clients family needs is what makes this property fit perfectly into the design brief provided by the client. The characteristic of the project, described as “Going to the essential” resonates throughout the property, to create a free flowing and bright design. It is a truly minimalistic design, born out of an old photography studio, that is open to interpretation and personalisation.

“The style exudes a quiet and comfortable elegance that supports the peaceful nature of the property and area.”
Villa Asaf, located in the bustling metropolitan city of Tel Aviv, is a remarkable private mansion designed and delivered by IP Studio Creation. The brief given to Ilana Parash of IP Studio Creation was to modernise the property for the clients, a young family with children. The clients brief aspired for graceful sleek lines, incorporating and luxurious and exclusive feel throughout the property. The design of the property was to bring together elegance and sophistication, using white marble floors and accents of colours to blend together and create a stylish and polished feel to the interiors. IP Studio Creation planned and designed the interiors with elegance and sophistication in mind. The key aspect for the designer was the concrete tiled walls; they act as a reference point for all four levels and run through the entire building. These walls also separate the living spaces from areas of the high home that are likely to have high traffic moving through the property. This allows for a secluded, comfortable atmosphere to be incorporated into the living quarters, away from the busiest areas of the home. Shortlisted in the International Design and Architecture Awards 2019, Ilana Parash spoke of the awards. She discussed how the awards bring together “professional design lovers” from across the globe and allowed for the “evaluation of projects of others”. As chief designer and owner of IP Studio Creation, Ilana Parash has many years experience working in interior design across the middle east.

IP Studio Creation’s design style centres around a homely and relaxed ambiance that is modern and young in character. As Villa Asaf is located in an area that is surrounded by young families, the small cottage style houses had to be considered when managing the design. The style of the project had to be integrated into the landscape so that the property did not digress from the surrounding areas. The interiors are designed and finished to the highest specification, using quality materials that are visually appealing and durable. IP Studio Creation believe that design is a way to reach people’s hearts and wanted to impart a feeling of timeless integrity, whilst blending together functional and cosy spaces for the clients. With this property, dramatic elements are blended perfectly with simple, clean lines. The white marble floor acts like a backdrop for the various accents of colours, and the golden elements blend to support the stylist and polished feel. The extensive blending of palettes provides joyfulness and wonder, with plenty of natural light which illuminates the space and shape of this property. The style exudes a quiet and comfortable elegance that supports the peaceful nature of the property and area. The open, airy nature of the project is exemplified by the flow from room to room, with the glass sided staircase providing an open view to the upper floor. This modern style fits the brief exactly, creating modern, functional spaces that provide a comfortable space for a young family to grow and expand.
The fittings are an exceptional feature of the project that contribute to this exceptional design. The two black, Armani style cabinets located in the corners of the main floor create a warm contrast to the white and clinical look of the bright walls and flooring. The brass and copper furnishings throughout the design scheme bring an industrial and functional feel to the overall style. As part of the design brief, it was important to ensure that whilst the property was appealing aesthetically, it could be lived in. IP Studio took great care to ensure that it was suitable for a family with young children and would be comfortable for them to relax into, as well as be able to entertain their friends. Maintenance was also key for the client; to be able to manage the property with relative ease was a key element of the design brief. To bring this together, IP Studio focused on keeping spaces bright and open, with as little clutter as possible to ensure that there would be minimal effort in the upkeep. The design of this property centres around the family. The living spaces provide a comfortable and inviting place to relax in, whilst being more than capable of accommodating the clients friends visiting. The childrens bedroom is stylish whilst being entertaining and welcoming. The overall spacing of the project flows naturally to bring the rooms together for the clients family to grow and enjoy their home.

“Roy Azar’s favourite aspect of the design is the contrast between contemporary and colonial architecture using craftmanship that enriches the cultural aspects of the destination.”
Dôce 18 Concept House is a project born of the desire to create a new space in the heart of San Miguel de Allende. A different concept rooted in an iconic property that for more than 100 years is known as Casa Cohen. Its walls harbour history and encrypt nostalgia. The boutique hotel with 10 suites, all different in size and configuration, inside an 18th Century property, protected by the Historical and Preservation Office. A project that transforms lives and modifies them. Dôce 18 Concept House fuses the past with the present, the traditional with the contemporary. The experience of visiting Dôce 18 Concept House awakens the senses with its aromas, textures, flavours and sounds. All in one place. A concept that serves as a platform to showcase creative diversity and support national and international talent, bringing together a meticulously curated collective of design, fashion, art, gastronomy and hospitality. Formed by a set of refined spaces designed by Roy Azar and together with the creativity of his wife Sally, this exclusive boutique hotel was born. Consisting of a sophisticated and chic space, conditioned with exotic pieces and high design especially chosen for L’Ôtel make Dôce 18 Concept House a benchmark in hospitality par excellence in the magical town that is San Miguel de Allende. The creativity and talent of Roy Azar, as well as his office, were the perfect formula for L’Ôtel Dôce 18 Concept House to fall in love with every guest who visits it, showing an exclusive personalised service that makes any visitor feel at home. Every moment within this iconic and luxurious space, offers a unique experience. Roy Azar started his architecture and interior design office in 1984, transmitting his creative talent to extremely demanding 16 Hotel et al
clients. Throughout his professional career, he has designed a variety of residential and commercial projects with distinctive interior styles. In recent years, his attention has been directed to the world of hospitality. Colonial and contemporary architecture were combined in this project to maintain the house history and bring it in to the present. The public areas at L’Ôtel are named after rooms in a regular house. The Morning Room, a terrace arranged around the main courtyard of the house with different tables and chairs one from another, where diners can taste the food grown in the hotel’s own garden. The Living Room and Drawing Room two joint areas, offering luxury and comfort to perform different activities. To complete the experience, at the top of the house, L’Ôtel offers sophisticated and incomparable suites carefully designed to the last detail to spend an unforgettable time. This design works well due to the clean and elegant balance between the architecture, design and the curated collection of furniture pieces, art and objects. L’Ôtel is made up of 10 suites, each with different designs and offers amenities that together create an ideal place capable of satisfying the most demanding guests. Each of the suites contains works of art by three prominent artists: photographers Cynthia Araf and Rafael de la Lastra, showcasing extraordinary views of landscapes of Mexico whilst the artist Marisa Boullosa. drew on each of the headers above the beds his famous branches of magnolias, giving the rooms a subtle feminine touch. A highlight within the unparalleled spaces the suites offer are the tubs and outdoor showers that will provide guests an experience of peace and coexistence with the nature. In addition to patios and balconies, a fireplace evokes a sense of home. The inclusion of handicrafts in the
decoration gives the rooms a unique feel. Each room has a wool blanket that was hand-embroidered by artisans from the Mayan community of Ixmul. Roy Azar’s favourite aspect of the design is the contrast between contemporary and colonial architecture using craftmanship that enriches the cultural aspects of the destination. Around 200 people were involved for the realisation of this architectural work; amongst these were artisans, carpenters and blacksmiths, all from the Bajío area. The restoration of the property was supervised by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), since the city is a Unesco Heritage. The carved quarry frames of the doors are originals of the time and were carefully removed and numbered at the beginning of the restoration. White is the main theme at L’Ôtel with strokes of different colours between the rooms. The distinguished Grand Room is a space that serves both as a reception area, bar and art gallery. Decorated with objects of art and furniture with a pointed design, this area causes visitors to enter into an alternate world of sophistication. The success of this project has seen Roy Azar Architects shortlisted in this year’s International Hotel and Property Awards within the Hotel Under 50 Rooms Global category. When asked about the importance of the awards, Roy stated that they “promote architects and interior designer´s talent around the globe, showing how every country is participating in the design world”. LÔtel with its mix of characteristic architecture and contemporary style has come alive inside its historical enclosure and is unique in its class. A jewel of San Miguel.

“Da Fonseca have brought to life a design brief that called for a combination of functionality and comfort for the family to grow.”
Placed in the prestigious The Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, UAE, this newly constructed residence is of a contemporary modern construction, turned into a complete family home for husband, wife, three children and staff. As a luxury interior design and architecture practice, Da Fonseca Design were commissioned to complete this project. The brief from the client was to design an interior with chic opulence and luxurious layers of textures and colours. The design flows throughout the property, with full double height windows to allow for maximum light to pour into the property. The differing layers and textures add depth to the design, complimenting the deep aquatic blues that mirror the beach front location. The interior of the luxury property was intended to be clean and uncluttered yet with points of interest featured throughout to minimise the empty space. The brief extended to the design and landscaping of the roof terrace, all external gardens and the redesign and build of the pool and barbecue area. When speaking of her favourite aspect of the property, the interior designer Nicola Bisiker said “To be able to create a complete beautiful, warm and useable family room from start to finish.” The open plan nature of the project, that flows from room to room and from floor to floor, mirrors the beach front location, along with the colour pallette chosen for the interiors. The bedrooms themselves were designed with the occupants in mind. The colours of each room were chosen to suit the individual characters of the children, adding a personal touch to the family’s new property. Da Fonseca are shortlisted in the International Hotel and Property Awards 2019 in the Luxury Residence - £2.5-5
26 Hotel et al
million category with their Private Villa project. When speaking of the awards, Nicola discussed how “it is important to have work recognised throughout the world, amongst fellow industry members and the general public both on a business and a creative level.” As a complete spectrum design practise, based in the United Arab Emirates, they work across both residential and commercial properties, providing beautifully crafted and executed interiors. The interior design project featured luxurious elements such as polished veneers, natural stone and beautiful lighting to create a dramatic ambience and interest in the property. The communal living space features a chandelier above the deep aquatic blue sofas, casting light across the room. The dining area of the project features well thought-out spatial planning to allow for key areas to be enhanced for more elegant dining and evening functions. The full wall mirror, which reflects the dining table and eye-catching wall art, allows for the illusion of space to expand beyond the dimensions of the room. The golden leaf wall art acts as a lighting piece, combining the luxurious design with functionality to create a beautiful lighting element that creates the perfect space for hosting guests or a family meal. There are a range of different facilities for the family, including a full gym and gym lobby, study, guest rooms, master bedroom, dressing rooms, two kitchens and an entrance lobby. The level of opulence and luxury flows throughout the project, with the surroundings being a large influence on the design scheme. Incorporating the opulence as well as the comfort allowed Da Fonseca to bring a lush green and blue colour pallette to the communal areas to reflect its oceanfront
location. Having worked on a global scale, the design practise were able to draw on years of experience and blend this with the influence of the surroundings. This enabled the designers to make full use of the position of the property and were therefore able to bring the outside in, working within the architectural elements of the contemporary building. They were able to realise the complete project down to the final accessories, kitchen and dining items. Nicola states that this allowed them to “be able to create a complete beautiful, warm and useable family room from start to finish”. The design of the property itself was created to integrate into the wider environment. The double height windows, full terraces and balconies are all integrated into the property, allowing for maximum exposure to the outside landscape and elements. The double height windows allowed for natural light to flood into the space and to blend the comfort of the project with the striking beauty of the surroundings. The top terrace is a full garden leading to a spa lobby that was inspired by Bali which lends itself to the integration of the natural surroundings. All these elements have fitted perfectly into the property of 14,500sqft, exemplifying the luxurious and expansive nature that the client so desired. Da Fonseca have brought to life a design brief that called for a combination of functionality and comfort for the family to grow. The custom design of the furniture, lighting and wall panelling brought a personal touch to the property, picking up on the clients personalities and individual character. This property is luxurious, comfortable and above all else, a family home.

“The architecture of the property was designed in a way to bring depth and framing to the landscape.”
Chalet Nevalis, positioned in the area of the resort of Verbier, is positioned ideally to take advantage of the morning sunlight. Overlooking the mountains of Mont Blanc and Combins, the property is inspired by rural mountain architecture and aims to reinterpret the architecture and features of ancient mountain huts and chalets in a luxurious environment. The brief given to Cittolin Polli was to “reflect the romance and nostalgia nourished by collective memory.” The location of the property allows for a more traditional mountain style to be given to the construction of the property, whilst also maintaining modern architectural and design features. The project has been shortlisted in The International Hotel and Property Awards 2019 in the Ski Chalet/Hotel category. Speaking on the awards, Stefano Cittolin, the lead designer on the project, he stated that “The competition combines the creativity of architects and designers to give more audacity and novelty. It also allows you to discover world projects and open the spirit of design and architecture.” The project itself presents current trends and inspiration while keeping the location in mind, such as the consistent use of wooden furniture and natural stone fixtures throughout. In contrast to this, there are new materials and technologies intelligently used to keep the property timeless, to bring a modern twist to the project. Cittolin Polli, a full service firm that focuses on both architecture and interior design, are based in Switzerland in both Lausanne and Martigny. Working on residential and commercial properties, their inspiration are often taken from their surroundings. Founded in 1997, the architectural has anchored themselves in Swiss and French regions, as well as 34 Hotel et al
on a global scale. The essence of their work is characterised by a permanent dialogue between the built elements and the location of the project. In the case of Chalet Nevalis, Stefano Cittolin has used innovative techniques in order to maximise the impact of the picturesque location. In this project they have used a large glazed part on the south facade in order to enhance the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It creates a mix between tradition, precisely measured originality, innovative and characterful materials. The windows that lead up to the frame and the open angles allow a perfect harmony with the mountains of the valley, bringing together that mix of rural beauty with a sleek modern construct. The interiors of the property reflect the delicate balance between traditional and modern design. The open plan communal area leads onto the floor to ceiling windows to display the breathtaking beauty of the surroundings, allowing natural light to flood into all areas of the property. The lighting of the communal area is sleek and contemporary without imposing on the timber frame of the property. This compliments the furniture included, promoting a comfortable area to relax in whilst revelling in the beauty of the surroundings. The choice of the neutral colour palette of the furniture and fittings compliments the frame of the project; it creates a link between the man-made and the natural sides of the property. The light wood of the frame and the furniture lifts the overall atmosphere of the project. As Stefano Cittolin said, “the quality finishes meet the requirements of customers, while ensuring a mountain atmosphere”. This is also reflected in the quality materials that have been used in accordance with cultural influences in order to respect the environment.
The selection of mainly old wood, sawn timber and local natural stones again blends this property into the surroundings to create a truly mountainous atmosphere to the property. The architecture of the property was designed in a way to bring depth and framing to the landscape. The frame of the house extends from the inside to the outside to emulate a continuous development of the property. Within this there was a mix of different sources for the various elements of the project. Local craftsmen, carpenters, stonemasons, joiners, locksmiths and landscapers were involved in the development of this project in order to ensure it was kept in line with local traditions. The use of local traditions and craftsmen plays an important part in many of Cittolin Polli’s projects as they strive to find a delicate balance between local traditions and modern influences. This project is innovative in Verbier, to bring a more contemporary twist on the traditional style of a mountain chalet. The location of the property means that the design of the project has to keep the customer in mind; to create somewhere that could be an escape from the busy Verbier resort below but also stay connected to the modern world. The property needed to be comfortable, beautiful and above all else functional, for the customer to take in the breathtaking beauty of the Swiss Alps that surround them. Chalet Nevalis is a combination of the traditional and contemporary; a property with mountain life fused into the frame whilst maintaining a modern comfort, to enjoy the beauty and the grandeur of the surroundings, framed perfectly by the architecture of the property.

“The main focal point of the dining space comes in the form of a gilded bonsai cherry tree sculpture that cycles through the fours seasons, in brilliant light and colours whilst the guests dine.”
The sophistication of Mizumi Restaurant unites traditional Japanese elements with contemporary design for a luxurious dining experience. Located in the luxurious Wynn Palace Hotel, Macau, the restaurant embodies a balanced collection of element to create a clean and modern Japanese restaurant that still harkens back to a traditional sensibility. The Mizumi Restaurant has been shortlisted in the Restaurant Within a Hotel - Global category of The International Hotel and Property Awards 2019, held on the island of Capri. Vicente Wolf, the lead designer of Vicente Wolf Associates, described how the awards provide “recognition for innovative work by the international community” and “supports excellence in design.” Vicente Wolf has been a leading New York based designer for over forty years, working on a global scale across both residential and commercial projects. He has fostered the global development of his brand through a simplicity-driven principle that intermingle his many creative endeavours. Vicente’s interiors incorporate authentic, globally-sourced artifacts and furnishings with modern decor in a warm palette, capturing a sense of earthy charisma and timelessness. Having worked on previous Wynn Resorts projects, such as ‘Wynn SW Steakhouse’ and ‘Wynn Cotai Noodles’, Vicente was able to draw upon previous experience with the client, whilst also incorporating the heritage of the location. As guests pass through a contemporary rock garden threshold, they enter a modern version of a Japanese courtyard. Here, a mix of natural, polished and lustrous materious simultaneously reference age old traditions and inspire new ones. Distinct and strong design elements such as the steel columns,
42 Hotel et al
tansu chests, origami mobile and bronze shoji screen are united by traditional Japanese orange and multiple metallic tones. Whilst bringing together these various elements, the project still captures the essence of a true Japanese environment. This integration starts when the diners approach the restaurant from the hallway. They are greeted by a modern interpretation of a Japanese garden and from this point of view, diners are lead into the restaurant itself. The main focal point of the dining space comes in the form of a gilded bonsai cherry tree sculpture that cycles through the fours seasons, in brilliant light and colours whilst the guests dine. This tree was designed not only to draw the eye to the centre of the dining area but to act as an anchor point for the space. The two teppanyaki stations are each crowned with a dramatic orange lacquered hood. This complements the rich colour palette of the overall design scheme of the restaurant as well as the nature of the hotel. Similarly, the sushi station sits under a mobile of gold and silver origami cranes, subtly contributing to the desire to remain reminiscent of the surroundings. The expansive space within the dining area creates a very open and communal feel, whilst also remaining intimate. Vicente Wolf described “how the various areas integrate with each other, the sushi bar, main dining room, private alcoves and teppanyaki counters.” The furniture invites diners to relax with comfortable, low seating surrounding the dining tables. These promote an atmosphere of intimacy between the diners at the tables. This is contrasted by the seating placed around the sushi and teppanyaki stations, which promote a communal and friendly environment to enjoy the company of friends and family alike.
The sanctuary of the three private dining rooms has been brought to life with one wall stacked entirely from floor to ceiling in tansu chests, with the remaining space enveloped in a distinct orange coloured fabric. The tansu chests were created by Indonesian craftsmen of Kalpa Taru, Bali. They deftly reproduced Japanese hardware and customary woods to give the wall a sense of authenticity. The large bonsai tree sculpture in the centre of the restaurant was given a custom gold leaf finish tree trunk and branches with acrylic leaves. The flowers emanate LED light that fluctuate in four colour cycles to represent the four seasons. The tree sits in a bed of white river rock with a polished stainlesssteel planter box. Vicente described how the design “incorporates all the elements that a Wynn Hotel promises: glamour, detail, scale and great dining.” In this project, Vicente Wolf has utilised traditional Japanese themes, broadening the design concept to include the usual thematic approach to Asian dining, whilst also stepping out of the traditional to add a twist on the design. Throughout the project, the attention to detail in an effort to evoke a traditional design is palpable. The sophistication of the restaurant blends design trends from traditional Asian eating to a modern and eclectic style. The “Ying & Yang” aesthetic permeates the details of the project, to remain grounded in the roots of the location and environment. All the elements of this restaurant come together to create not just a warm dining experience but a memorable one, for friends, family and travellers to come together and enjoy the beautiful, authentic stylings.
