$80,000 in scholarships to aspiring young musicians and continues to invest in music education through student workshops, outreach programs, and opportunities that inspire the next generation of performers and arts advocates. We are proud to foster connection, celebrate diversity, and create a welcoming place where people from all backgrounds come together through music.
What began as a vision to create a welcoming musical community has grown into one of the Coachella Valley’s premier performing arts organizations. Today, more than 100 volunteer musicians share the power of music through inspiring concerts, community performances, and educational outreach that enrich the lives of thousands of residents each year. As we celebrate this landmark anniversary, we invite you to become a 25th Anniversary Season Partner and help ensure our next 25 years are even more impactful than our first.

Desert Winds Freedom Band’s Symphonic Band plays first concert.
Desert Winds adds a Jazz Band comprised of a select group of seasoned jazz musicians.
Spring 2011 First student scholarship given to Hayden Vaughn to attend college for music education.
Spring 2013 Guest Composer Series added to annual season offering. Mr. David Shaffer first composer chosen to workshop with the band as well as school bands throughout the Coachella Valley
November 2-6, 2016 Desert Winds and LA Freedom Band co-host the Lesbian and Gay Band Association’s Annual Conference in Palm Springs during Pride Festival.
November 2024 Desert Winds adds new high-energy POP Band ensemble to play events throughout the Coachella Valley year-round
January 12, 2025 Desert Winds plays its inaugural Chamber Music concert at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Palm Desert.
December 6, 2025 Desert Winds POP Band participates in their first ever Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade. The group wins the “Brightest Float” award.
March 28-29, 2026 Desert Winds Symphonic Band performs our spring concert with our largest ensemble to date – 108 musicians.

The Pride Bands Alliance will make history as the first LGBTQ+ group to march in the 138th Annual Tournament of Roses Parade with a joint band made of up of performers from across the country, including 18 Desert Winds members.

Not all of our musicians own an instrument. While the band provides loaner instruments, these require ongoing maintenance and repair to keep them in peak playing condition.

As our band grows, so do the administrative and creative demands on our small staff. Simultaneously, the cost of renting rehearsal and concert venues has risen significantly. Your donation ensures we maintain our high standard of performance by providing the vital resources needed to sustain our growth.
By evaluating our annual budget, with input from our musicians and staff, the Board maps out our upcoming capital requirements. We must plan ahead for major expenses, from purchasing largescale percussion instruments to funding exciting new performance opportunities that broaden our reach.
We believe music must constantly evolve. With your help, we support that evolution by funding future educators. Our college scholarship program supports Coachella Valley students pursuing degrees in music education.

Adam Jacobs, most known for originating the role of Aladdin in Disney’s “Aladdin” on Broadway, will be the guest artist at our November show at the McCallum Theatre. Members from the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus and Modern Men will also perform as our guest chorus at our November show.

Rossano Galante, an acclaimed American composer and orchestrator known for his extensive concert band repertoire and contributions to major Hollywood film scores, will serve as our Composer in Residence for our spring concert. In addition to leading a clinic and conducting Desert Winds during the performances, Rossano will present educational clinics for students at schools throughout the Coachella Valley. Conductor’s Circle donations help make this valuable educational and artistic program possible.
