St. Louis River Estuary National Water Trail & Train Ride 12:00 – 2:30 PM Departure Location: 6930 Fremont Street, Duluth Explore the nation’s largest freshwater estuary rich with wildlife, wetlands, and restored natural habitats. The experience is enhanced by a historic train ride aboard the Duluth River Train, which travels along the estuary’s shoreline, providing narrated views of the river’s history, ecology, and industrial heritage. Communication styles influence both the intent and the impact of a message. It can be a source of conflict or result in collaborative conversations that create the ability to find common ground with others and influence positive change.

The Construction Manager at Risk (CMaR) method is increasingly used for public projects. Through a parks and recreation case study, this session highlights how early collaboration, transparent costing, and shared accountability deliver better results—reducing risk and ensuring high-performing community facilities are completed on time and on budget.

Intergenerational communication can be either a source of conflict or can lead to cooperation, collaboration and a more unified group of people. Embrace new approaches and communicate in ways that engage all generations. Bridging generational gaps requires open communication with an awareness of the growing generational differences.

Participants will meet at Ski Hut in West Duluth and travel to the Spirit Mountain Riverside Bar & Grill for a presentation on universal trail design and accessibility. Attendees may then choose to ride the Spirit Mountain trail system or the Willard Munger Trail. Participants bringing their own bikes will be responsible for their own transportation, while a bus will depart from the DECC and transport those renting bikes to Ski Hut and the ride locations. Grandma’s Marathon is the 10th largest marathon in the United States. It’s a world class event with small town charm, and its strategies for marketing and operations have changed and grown just as the race has since its start in 1977.

Park staff share three case studies that demonstrate how park history is used to connect with community through equity-centered visual history, digital storytelling, and mobile, interactive programs.

Grounded in a commitment to foster belonging, these programs transform stories from the archives into meaningful opportunities for uplifting community connection.

Hartley Nature Center & Chester Bowl Tour

Skateparks are incredibly popular. But is your skatepark inclusive of adaptive athletes? Learn about All Access Skateparks, a new design approach that accommodates the growing community of adaptive skateboarders (who use wheelchairs, crutches, or other mobility aids) while providing a fun and challenging space for all skateboarders.

Participants will depart from the DECC by bus to visit Hartley Nature Center, a nonprofit environmental learning center within Hartley Park. Attendees will learn about environmental education, park stewardship, and operations. The tour continues to Chester Bowl, a historic park known for its ski hill, youth programming, and community partnerships. Participants will explore the funding, management, and operational strategies that support both successful community assets.
