DESIGNER MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2020 / ISSUE 244

Welcome to the December issue of Designer. We reach the end of a year that many will be glad to see the back of, filled as it has been with all kinds of challenges that no-one saw coming. This is why it is so important to focus on the positives wherever we can, and this month we have plenty of those to take in as we bring you all the results of the Designer Awards 2020. Winners and finalists from across our project and product categories are featured in this issue, plus we will be coming back for an even more detailed look at some of our winning projects over the coming issues. We are more disappointed than I can put into words that, for the first time in the event’s 18-year history, we were unable to stage our usual annual networking extravaganza in person, but at the same time, our very first Virtual Designer Awards gave us a fantastic opportunity to salute the best of the best from across our industry. We had great fun making it and very much hope you enjoyed watching the show too. In case you missed it live, the whole presentation ceremony is still available to view at virtualdesignerawards.com Huge thanks to all of our sponsors who each demonstrated their commitment to supporting design excellence through their involvement with the awards, and of course, thanks and hearty congratulations to all of this year’s fantastic winners and finalists.

Oli Moss, Roundhouse

Ultimate Luxury Kitchen Design of the Year Focusing on projects at the higher end of the budget spectrum, this winning design helped transform a former industrial space into a unique home‌

In harmony with its industrial surroundings, this project shows how bespoke design can beautifully reflect the essence of any kind of interior. This former factory’s industrial environs provided the template for the design. Roundhouse designer Oli Moss worked closely with the interior designers who were working on the whole space to ensure that the kitchen integrated effortlessly into the overall project. He paid close attention to detail to create a beautiful, supremely functional kitchen, with a carefully chosen mix of special materials echoing the heritage of the building, including stained black vertical grain Rough Sawn Oak, stainless steel, and Neolith Iron Corten Satin on the expansive island. Recessed handles keep cabinetry contemporary and discreet.

The design also includes a striking Calacatta Viola marble worktop and splashback. Roundhouse made a heavy-duty stainless-steel frame housing to the design, for the industrial scale Sub Zero Fridge freezer, to integrate it neatly into the scheme. In the former industrial lift, Moss kept original folding doors and the old head gear, utilising the space for a bespoke walk-in larder.

Hugh Miller, H.Miller Bros

Kitchen Design of the Year (over £30k) A particularly high calibre category was topped by a unique kitchen built by fine craftsmanship and a masterful use of wood Faced with an indefinite lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Hugh Miller of bespoke kitchen makers H. Miller Bros, decided it was the perfect time to replace his tired kitchen, and design his own kitchen at his Liverpool Victorian apartment. After years of making high-end kitchens and studio furniture for clients across the UK, Miller finally had the time to design his dream kitchen to reflect an uncompromised expression of himself. He wanted his own kitchen

to take inspiration from this love of Japanese design and the country’s cabinet making traditions. The previous kitchen was within a large room that encompassed the kitchen, living and dining area. Miller wanted to define the kitchen space as separate from the living area. There was also a desperate need for additional storage, and with plenty of space at room-height level due to the 3m ceilings throughout, the idea of a three-tier kitchen with cabinets above head height began to form.

At the bottom of these three levels, a base layer of drawers and cabinets made from Iroko wood was created, with recessed inset doors that act as a foundation. Above counter level, the mid layer is a calm, functional work zone with a Caesarstone London Grey worktop and cabinetry painted in Farrow and Ball School House White. Above this is the ‘canopy’ level defined by a long, slim, structural truss that forms a threshold between the kitchen and the rest of the living space.

John McNeil, Haus12 Interiors

WINNER:

Kitchen Design of the Year (under £30k) Designed to reflect the distinctive style of this new-build home, a bold and creative kitchen came out on top in a highly competitive category for projects with a more restricted budget

Haus12 owner/designer John McNeil based his design on the architectural plans of the house that suggested the kitchen should reflect strong lines and a minimal but bold aesthetic. The architect had originally located the kitchen in the centre of the property but Haus12 suggested that the kitchen be moved to one end of the property to take advantage of the floor-toceiling glazing and better access to external social space. The design was simple, consisting of a large statement island with a twist, and an appliance wall with a concealed double pantry. A utility housed the additional kitchen appliances. The design of the island also employed ‘hidden in plain view’ features such as the island niche. The materials were heavily influenced by the client’s strong

desire for deep brown earthy tones. The island design incorporates a unique 144 degree angle with a special niche construction. From the living space, the island is purely minimalist with a clean zero plinth look and unique niche feature lined with the industrial Cliff Ferro Oxide. The bank of tall units was built into the stud wall and framed in a 19mm panel to create clean lines and a picture frame backdrop to the showcase island piece.

Ultimate Luxury Bathroom Design of the Year Creatively crafted using one of nature’s most versatile materials, this winning project achieves the perfect balance of warmth, style and a clever configuration

The brief for this Grade II manor house’s ensuite was to create a luxury sanctuary with 21st century style and functionality and a light, spacious feel whilst celebrating the fabric of the building and embracing the owners’ love of wood. Designer Pippa Paton designed a T-shaped teak ‘pod’ for the centre of the enlarged space (which had been created from merging an existing dressing room and ensuite) to house a large shower, double vanity, floorto-ceiling storage units and display and storage niches, and to screen the Toto Washlet WC from view. The centrally-positioned ‘pod’ allowed original stone walls, oak beams and fireplace to be exposed and vistas to be maximized – the shower screen is clear above shoulder height to enable a vista up the tree-lined driveway. to-ceiling glass panel between the basins provides a view from the shower across the bath, through another (electro-magnetic) glass panel to the alabaster sculpture. From the basin side, an ammonite fossil, is visible in a speciallydesigned niche in the shower. Marine-grade teak was chosen for panelling in the shower, bespoke double-ended bath, twin basins and all joinery including display shelves. The curve of the bath is echoed in the curve separating the timber floor of the hall from the resin floor. Oak ‘barn-style’ doors, made to mimic the hall floorboards, slide to close off the bedroom from the ensuite.

Bathroom Design of the Year (over £20k)

This project was technical challenging due to the number heating and cooling services located in the bathroom which needed access for servicing. Richard McGee of Studio SW6 decided to tackle the layout in the first instance to ensure that the clients’ wishlist was fulfilled. As the room is large, McGee decided to build bespoke cabinetry along one wall which reduced the footprint and housed the heating and cooling system. A new floor-to-ceiling wall created the space to locate a freestanding bath, while behind the wall are created two cubicles – one for the shower and one for the WC – creating privacy when the bathroom was being used by more than one person. There is aso a hidden pocket door system for added modesty when the toilet is in use. McGee kept the finishes to a minimum and specified to match the adjoining rooms. The access to the bathroom was through a hidden panelled jib door via the walk-in wardrobe. The design continues the wall panelling through to the master ensuite to ensure continuity and compliment the bedroom and wardrobe.

The brief was to design a masculine master ensuite in a four-bedroom house. Keeping the room spacious and light, with a minimalist design was key, while using influences of Scandinavian and industrial design to tone with the architecture of the house. Designer Lynsey Rowe reconfigured the space, positioning the shower against the wall opposite the window, leaving the remaining space for the basins. Studding out the back wall allowed for pipework to be concealed and other visual elements hidden, all without impacting on the room size too much. Rowe added contrast to the bright space with the anthracite tile, creating a masculine feel and an industrial visual style, accompanied by the brushed gold brassware. A wall-hung double basin kept things simple, with a subtle Scandinavian influence.

Living Space Design of the Year Featuring projects that incorporate broader spaces within the home, this category sees some horizons widened in spectacular style‌

The brief was to remodel a dark, compartmentalised house, disconnected from the outside, into a fluid open plan space, flooded with natural light and encompassing the garden. A single-storey extension to the rear of the house has been transformed into a pavilion-like outdoor room, through a new glazed roof and glazed wall. A cleverly cantilevered roof structure makes the volume appear floating and weightless, flooding the interior with natural light. The project emphasises the seamless connection of inside and out, opening up the house to the garden and letting spaces and atmospheres merge and interact. Paul McAneary Architects (PMA) created the lighting design for the space, the most important element being a bespoke lighting detail in

the frameless ridge over the kitchen island where the lights appear to float from the sky. Other technology is fully integrated so the space can remain as calm, uncluttered and contemplative as possible. The kitchen space is designed with a flush induction hob, Siemens down draft extractor, Franke sinks, Vola taps, Miele dishwasher, and Siemens fridge freezer. A concealed breakfast cupboard hides the toaster, kettle and ingredients to help maintain the clean and clear look when not in use. A flush floor between the kitchen, living, dining and exterior terrace results in a seamless flow of all spaces together. Sustainable teak board was chosen for duality, its natural beauty working well both inside and out. The full height glazing contrasts with a new bespoke external render

that PMA specifically developed in the studio’s laboratory for this project. The facade intentionally resembles natural stone, to balance with the eco material palette of the project. Adding to the overall

impact is the project’s concept of bringing the ‘outside in’ through the design of retractable glazed sliding walls which, as they open, enable the kitchen and garden to become one.

International Design of the Year

An impressive and eclectic set of entries from around the world were submitted to the international category this year, with stunning and unique projects making up the final three‌

The core of the approach to design from Bali-based Inspiral Architecture and design is to create spaces that inspire the user to merge nature with decadent human comfort, and this ensuite bathroom project really captures this essence. Designer Charlie Hearn created this remarkable scheme; a spacious area within a bamboo structure, featuring a hand-made teak bathtub and carved fossilized wood sinks, each of which are brought to the forefront from dappled light that beams through large round openings that frame the outside tropical landscape. Much attention went into the large number of bespoke elements such as the built-in units, curved glass screen, resin encased mirrors, crafted furniture and how they

combined with each other in such a unique space. The challenge was also how to maintain the functional aspect where non-typical materials such as bamboo were used, and ensuring they were resistant to water damage. Eco resins, recycled iron wood and natural stone were used in wet areas, used thoughtfully to balance the overall scheme. The design of this space become an opportunity to create a bathroom that was not just a place to cleanse, but somewhere that is holistic, immersive and inspiring, and it is perhaps one of the most unusual projects to ever feature in the Designer Awards.

Stiving to support those who have been made redundant as a result of the pandemic, David Woollcott’s SaddleUp! initiative has offered help to those facing some tough challenges

This year, during what have been tough times for many on both a personal and business level, there have unfortunately been job losses which have seen talented people forced to regroup and seek alternative routes for the progression of their careers. During the Covid-19 crisis, David Woollcott, UK Managing Director at appliance brand Fisher & Paykel, decided to reach out to those who had been made redundant from within our industry. He provided anyone who wanted one with a 20-minute session to ask questions, listen and provide feedback. These sessions are free of charge and are conducted confidentially, offered out to his LinkedIn network and others.

38

Awards eds and contribution.indd 38

Offering several sessions a week, he subsequently asked friends and contacts from other sectors to join in, each with their own perspectives and unique insights. This idea has now expanded and he has been joined by a number of executives and leaders from banking, construction, automotive and legal who are also offering similar sessions each and every week. So far, the SaddleUp! initiative has had a hugely positive impact for over 400 individuals faced with big challenges during the past few months, and it continues to provide a source of advice and encouragement for those finding themselves out of work because of this year’s unprecedented events.

Martin Allen-Smith, Editor of Designer, said: “David’s efforts to reach out and help those who, through no fault of their own, have seen their careers badly affected by the events of the past few months, has grown into a fantastic initiative which has already given hundreds of people much needed help and advice. “We are pleased to be able to recognise David’s efforts in stepping forward and making a real difference with his SaddleUp! initiative. This award is a small thank you from us on behalf of all the people helped so far, and for going the extra mile to support so many across the wider business community.”

Contribution to the Industry Award

With a natural eye for design, Barrie Cutchie has brought the essence of traditional style into modern living for many years, playing a pivotal role in developing the rich mix of classic options that bathroom designers now have at their disposal… WINNER:

Barrie Cutchie

This special award is given to an individual whose contribution to the industry has resonated far beyond the environs of their own business, and few come close to being as deserving of that accolade than Barrie Cutchie, who has been at the forefront of bathroom innovation and design for over 35 years. In that time, he has designed freestanding baths made from solid surface and resin, cast iron baths, stone baths, as well as bathroom mirrors, lighting and furniture. He is largely credited with introducing the bathroom world to the Victoriana style – initially from a stall in Bermondsey Antique Market and then from a shop in Camden Market. Working initially with original Victorian fittings, which he renovated before designing new brassware in a Victorian style, Cutchie kick-started a traditional bathroom style that still sells in sizable quantities; traditional style in bathrooms counts for over 20% of the market now. And he was one of the first to pick up on the trend of using a ‘statement bath’ in place of a matching three-piece bathroom suite. His eye for design has translated directly into considerable commercial success over the years. He was instrumental in founding brands including BC Sanitan, Imperial Bathrooms, Rubadubdub, Bayswater Bathrooms, and BC Designs, the latter of which he remains actively involved with after two decades of business growth. Cutchie has also previously lent his expertise to the Designer Awards as a judge in previous years, and we are pleased to be able to salute his vitally important contribution to the wider bathroom industry.

Best Use of Materials

The right mix of materials can make or break any project, and this category highlights some of the finest specification skills

The brief was to create a wow factor kitchen in the heart of this new-build home. The concept was to create a minimalist ‘anti-kitchen’ in which the functionality of the space could blend seamlessly into the room, with clean lines, a neutral colour palette and innovative use of natural materials. The quality of the materials was key to achieving the overall result. Dramatic impact was created with the 3m long solid Carrara marble island, graceful in its rawness and purity while adding a feeling of luxury. The black resin worktop is made out of Richlite, in a matt finish to match the oak. Neutral grey for the walls and grey resin for the flooring – with underfloor heating – also kept the overall look understated and fitted in with the décor of the rest of the

En Masse created a bespoke architectural light fitting over the island using a deep recess and black powder coated steel with solid oak. The materials used for the feature light were a reflection of the rest of the design, which centered around oak and stainless steel, plus the Carrara marble to reinforce the theme of natural, tactile, subtle yet effective choice of materials. Every detail of this kitchen has been handcrafted to deliver on the design brief, including the oak wrap on the Siemens extractor hood, which adds personality and a gentle hint of the unexpected.

Robert Waite, Rencraft

WINNER:

British Design & Manufacturing Award Serving up the very best in British style and craftsmanship, this year’s winner fused traditional elements within an overall contemporary design

This kitchen combines elements of both traditional and contemporary design. To one side of the room is a run of ceiling height, door-in-frame Shaker style cabinets with a tongueand-groove detail and aged-brass handles. In contrast, along the opposite wall is a run of modern, flat-fronted, push-open storage cabinets, offset with some cool monochrome wallpaper. All of the cabinetry was custommade in Rencraft’s workshop just

outside Sevenoaks, Kent. The tall units were specially designed to sit beneath the sloped ceiling, while each of the two islands have been topped with 60mm thick mitred Silestone quartz worktops in Eternal Marquina, complete with waterfall edges. The double islands also serve to define the two separate zones of this otherwise open-plan living space. One island has been given over to food preparation, with the sink positioned in close proximity

to the Lacanche range cooker, the bespoke larder cupboard with walnut interiors and integrated Miele appliances which include two dishwashers, a fridge and a freezer. On the other side of the room, the second island serves more as a space for dining, relaxing or entertaining with the dual height worktop incorporating a slightly raised seating area, integrated Miele wine conditioning unit, and room for four bar stools.

New Designer of the Year Award Recognising the best emerging talent across the industry, this category showcases some of the highly promising new designers who are already creating stunning interior schemes

From a design standpoint, the brief seemed simple; to revamp a current home into a stylish and cultured property, with a design that can be added to and adapted over the years. However, the challenges of the space were continuous throughout the design phase with the careful use of space absolutely paramount. The kitchen is the hub of this family home and needed to incorporate a utility space – and with two small children in residence this needed to be a very hardworking area. The clients were against keeping the utility space within the kitchen and so it made sense to create an area that could be both within the kitchen and also separate, through hidden slide-away doors.

Harris-Taylor also created designs for the bathrooms, which needed to be suited not just to the needs of the children, but also had to be accessible for ageing grandparents who often stay during the year. A low-depth Twyford bath was selected, and also slightly set into the floor to make the step in to the bath as comfortable as possible. The clients said of the completed project: “We have a beautiful house now that reflects the way we live, the things we enjoy doing but also has the scope to grow with us as our kids get older or our interests change. The final house makes better use of space and is both functional and elegant.

It has been the toughest of years for showrooms, but these spaces remain the only true way for clients to fully interact with their prospective purchases. All of our finalists this year are among the best the UK has to offer‌

Awards Show space.indd 60

A multi-faceted 40,000 sq ft building, Roccia set out to make its showroom in Preston a destination site for kitchens, bathrooms and tiles. Although vast in size, its design and layout manages to create a personal feel for visitors to the former warehouse building. Even from the outside, the Dekton Orix cladded building is something of a show stopper with its distinctive angular design and full height glazing. Inside, it showcases 17 full-size complete kitchens along with over 50 bathroom displays and over 400 individual tile displays, all part of an evolution over the ten years since the showroom first opened. The latest development is a glass extension forming a new entrance to the building in front of the steel frame that was there before, as well as an extension into a neighbouring building. The scale and execution of the showroom is what sets it apart.

MARMOLEUM: LIVE FORWARD The weighted average of Forbo Flooring Systems’ Marmoleum portfolio is confirmed as CO2 neutral, from cradle to gate, without the need for carbon offsetting measures. It is manufactured from 97% natural raw materials, including flax, jute and linseed oil, which are grown and harvested annually, and wood flour and pine rosin that are sourced from sustainably managed forestry plantations. What’s more, 62% of the natural ingredients are renewable, of which 29% are rapidly renewable, meaning it will grow back within one year. Marmoleum also boasts 43% reused and recycled content to reduce the demand for virgin raw materials. The CO2 produced in the extraction, transportation and manufacturing process of Marmoleum is balanced by the removal of CO2 through the growing of its natural ingredients, which is verified by third party Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)s. Using Marmoleum 2.5mm on a 10,000sqm project could equate to a 66,200kg/CO2 saving when compared to a PVC vinyl floor.

The other-worldly Omakase restaurant in Shanghai, China, is a pure fantasy space. It was created by Shanghai Hip-Pop Design Team and serves up high-end Japanese food in a truly one-off environment. The design vision was to create the sense of a permanent sunset, and the calming effect of constant gentle rain. Pink semi-transparent partitions and illuminated floors create the overall atmosphere, while the detail of cherry blossom petal patterns is subtly picked out by the warm lighting.
