Experience Gifts
Sometimes the best gifts are experiences rather than physical items. Plan a day trip to her favorite destination, book a spa day for her to relax and unwind or arrange a cooking class where she can learn new recipes. You could also surprise her with tickets to a concert, theater show or sporting event.
Practical Gifts
For busy moms who are always on the go, practical gifts can be lifesavers. Consider getting your mom a stylish yet functional tote bag or a backpack to carry all her essentials. You could also give her a smartwatch or fitness tracker to help her stay organized and track her health and fitness goals. A subscription to a meal delivery service or gifting kitchen gadgets or appliances that make meal preparation easier and more efficient are also useful ideas. How to Care for Your Fresh Flowers on Mother’s Day
The beauty of having a garden is buds continually blooming on one plant or another throughout most of the year. While this provides lovely views from your windows, it can also be nice to bring some beauty indoors.
Don’t be afraid to snip off a few blossoms each week. Many plants thrive after trimming and may reward you with even more flowers. Once you’ve gathered a bouquet from your garden, consider these tips to help keep fresh flowers at their best for a week or more:
•Bacteria can quickly destroy fresh flowers, which is why it’s important to use a clean vase. Any floral foam, wires or frogs used in your arrangement must also be washed in warm, soapy water.
•Remove any lower leaves that may come in contact with water inside the vase.
•Carefully trim each flower stem at a 90-degree angle. It may also be helpful to cut flowers while they are underwater to keep moisture flowing into the stems.
•Keep your arrangement out of direct sunlight. The darker and cooler the room, the longer your blossoms will bloom.
•Adding a crushed aspirin, bleach, vinegar, sugar or penny to the vase are age-old tricks. However, you can keep bacteria at bay and help flowers thrive by adding a packet of flower food to the water. It can be found at your local florist or home improvement store.
Flowers are living things that still require water, food and care after they are cut. Every 2-3 days, be sure to change the water, replenish the flower food and recut the stems for additional days of glorious color. Find more ideas for freshening up your indoor spaces at eLivingtoday.com.

Celebrating National Small Business Week 2025: Growing Together in Our Communities
By Kelly Thomas
Each year, National Small Business Week provides an essential reminder of the enormous impact small businesses and entrepreneurs have across America. In 2025, from May 4–10, we celebrate these dynamic and resilient entrepreneurs who not only drive our economy but also enrich the character of our communities, including those right here in Northeast Houston.
The importance of small businesses in our economy cannot be overstated. They are truly the backbone of our neighborhoods, communities, and cities, creating two out of every three new jobs in the United States each year. More than just statistics, these businesses represent personal dreams, hard work, and dedication. Behind every small business is an entrepreneur—someone who had the courage to take risks, pursue their passion, and turn their ideas into reality.
In Northeast Houston, our small business community is thriving. Each new storefront, home-based business, or innovative startup represents a unique journey, reflecting not just the entrepreneurial spirit but also the values, diversity, and personality of our area. From coffee shops to consulting firms, small businesses serve as gathering places, meeting hubs, and economic anchors in our communities.
Small business owners often embody incredible resilience. They’re frequently the first to open and the last to close each day, driven by passion, perseverance, and the personal investment they’ve made into their ventures. This dedication became especially apparent in recent years, as many small businesses navigated unprecedented challenges. Yet, through their adaptability and innovation, many have emerged stronger and even more committed to their communities.
National Small Business Week serves as a timely reminder that the growth of small businesses doesn’t happen in isolation—it requires a supportive ecosystem. This includes not only dedicated entrepreneurs but also supportive communities, local government assistance, access to resources, and consumer loyalty. As consumers and community members, our role is significant. By choosing to shop local, we directly contribute to the health and vitality of our neighborhoods. Every dollar spent locally has a ripple effect, supporting jobs, schools, infrastructure, and local services.
But supporting small businesses goes beyond just shopping locally. Mentorship and community networking play essential roles in nurturing business growth. Entrepreneurs thrive in communities that actively foster relationships, exchange knowledge, and share resources. Organizations like local chambers of commerce, economic development agencies, and Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) offer invaluable resources, providing training, networking events, and mentorship opportunities tailored specifically for small business owners. Participating in or promoting these resources can significantly impact an entrepreneur’s journey.
Additionally, in our digital age, support for small businesses extends into the virtual world. Engaging positively with local businesses on social media platforms, writing genuine reviews, and recommending services to family and friends are powerful ways to boost visibility and reputation. Word-of-mouth—whether digital or face-to-face—remains one of the strongest forces driving small business success.

From Prayer to Purpose: The Skero’s Furniture Story
By Kelly Thomas
Since 2002, Skero’s Furniture has been more than a store—it’s been a reflection of one family’s faith-filled journey and a gift to the communities of Kingwood, Atascocita, and Crosby. Born from a powerful moment of personal transformation, Skero’s continues to serve families with integrity, hospitality, and heart, offering name-brand furniture and a welcoming environment where everyone is treated like family.
The story of Skero’s Furniture begins not with a showroom or a business plan, but with a man at a crossroads. In April 2000, Daron Skero was facing a life that had veered off course. His relationships were strained, his path uncertain, and with his first child on the way, he knew something had to change. One evening, with the weight of his past heavy on his heart, Daron turned to God in prayer. That single moment of surrender would change everything. He found forgiveness, peace, and a renewed purpose—one built on faith, honesty, and the kind of integrity that would soon define his business.
In March 2002, Daron launched Kingwood Furniture and Consignment with his parents. By 2007, he and his wife Jill took full ownership, rebranding it as Skero’s Furniture and Mattress Center, setting the stage for continued growth.
Today, Skero’s Furniture is a thriving family-owned business with three community-rooted locations. Known for friendly service, affordable pricing, and an exceptional product line, the business has become a staple for families seeking comfort, quality, and a company that cares. Whether you’re looking for a stylish sofa, a new dining table, or the perfect mattress, Skero’s carries over 38 trusted name brands and offers furniture for every style, budget, and family need.
But what truly sets Skero’s apart isn’t just their product—it’s their people.
From the moment you walk through the door, you’re greeted by staff who are genuinely happy to help. Many of them are longtime team members who share Daron’s vision and values. They’re not just selling furniture—they’re helping families build spaces where love, laughter, and memories live. That sense of home is present in every interaction, whether you’re visiting the Kingwood location, shopping in Crosby, or exploring the one-of-a-kind Locker in Atascocita.
From its earliest days, Skero’s Furniture has operated on one guiding principle: the Golden Rule. As found in Matthew 7:12, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” This simple truth is the heartbeat of the business and influences every decision— from pricing and customer care to vendor relationships and team development. Daron calls it living for an “audience of One,” always striving to honor God first and foremost in his business.
Daron often says, “At Skero’s, we treat everyone like family, guided by faith and integrity.” That’s not just a motto—it’s a promise lived out in every showroom, every conversation, and every delivery.
So, if you’re looking to furnish your home with pieces that are as meaningful as they are beautiful, we invite you to visit Skero’s Furniture. Come see the heart behind the furniture. Come meet the people who believe your home should be your sanctuary. And come experience what happens when faith meets family and community becomes the true foundation.

How to Protect Your Pet’s Dental Health
By Family Features
Like humans, pets’ oral hygiene plays an important role iwn their overall health and quality of life. Common conditions like plaque buildup, tartar and bad breath can escalate to serious health conditions if untreated.
In fact, by the age of 3, 80% of pets experience some form of dental health issue, and the risk only increases as they age. However, for many pet owners, taking care of their four-legged friends’ oral health is a more difficult habit to maintain than their own daily brushing and flossing routine.
Many veterinarians recommend regular brushing for pets, and a wide array of treats and meal additives complement brushing to help support your pet’s oral health.
Protecting your pet’s oral health begins by talking with your veterinarian, who can provide recommendations tailored to your pet’s specific needs. With that guidance, you can start comparison shopping and reading labels so you can identify quality products. Remember you’re likely to find the greatest success by introducing oral health products as part of your pet’s daily routine early on.
Certifications for Trust and Quality
Products that meet high standards are eligible for certifications that assure consumers about their quality and efficacy. For example, the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) is an independent organization that evaluates pet dental products. Their Seal of Acceptance is awarded to products that meet strict standards for controlling plaque and tartar. You can find the seal on packaging as an easy visual indication of the product’s quality standards.
Natural, Effective Ingredients
Look for products that prioritize safety and health by offering natural, clinically proven ingredients and no artificial additives or chemicals. Seaweed (or kelp) is a preferred ingredient because it contains minerals and enzymes that help reduce plaque and prevent bacteria.
You can find 100% natural and organic kelp in products like ProDen PlaqueOff®, which includes A.N ProDen®, a kelp ingredient sustainably harvested from specially selected locations in the pristine North Atlantic waters off the Scandinavian coastline. Processed through a specialized method in extreme environmental conditions, it attains peak quality and effectiveness, ensuring safety and health for your pet.
Sustainable Practices
Another detail you can gather from the product’s packaging is whether a product manufacturer adheres to environmentally friendly practices and safe ingredient sourcing, which means the product is not only good for pets but also for the planet. This may be evident in certifications or special icons on the packaging, through information about sustainably harvested ingredients or with packaging that itself is environmentally responsible.
Tailoring to Individual Pets
Different pets have different needs based on age, size, breed and oral health status. Selecting the right product may also be complicated by your pet’s allergies or picky eating habits. You can find a variety of ingestible options, including powders, chews or bones like those offered by ProDen PlaqueOff®, to use in conjunction with daily brushing.
•Powder: Ideal for a seamless addition to your pet’s diet, this is the most economical choice, particularly for long-term use. It’s especially suitable for younger pets as a preventive measure, given its longevity and cost-effectiveness.
•Chews: For those looking for an easy-to-administer option that doubles as a reward, chews are the way to go. Additionally, for older pets or those with missing teeth, soft chews can offer a gentle yet effective way to maintain oral health. They’re a convenient choice for pet owners to give as a daily dose without the need for measuring or mixing.
•Bones: Designed not only to satisfy your dog’s natural chewing instincts but also to aid in dental care, bones are a perfect option for pet parents whose dogs prefer a longerlasting treat. Bones come in a variety of flavors and sizes, catering to both large and small breeds, making them a versatile way to help keep your dog’s teeth clean and their breath fresh.

THE FROGS OF MAY
by Martin de Vore
In mythologies of various cultures, it seems as though someone was always being threatened with a “plague of frogs.” Plague? Blessing would be more like it. Considering that most ancient cultures’ cities were located next to rivers — thus being subjected to genuine plagues of insects such as mosquitoes and flies — it seems like large numbers of frogs would be welcomed with open arms. But they weren’t. Fortunately, we live in more enlightened times today. In 2025, frogs are adored, especially during spring at Jesse Jones Park & Nature Center.
Images of cute little tropical treefrogs and poison arrow frogs adorn shirts, umbrellas, knapsacks and a plethora of other items offered for sale at nature-themed stores at just about every mall in metropolitan Houston. And with good reason. It can honestly be said that the Houston area is one of the frog capitals of the United States. Treefrogs, toads, chorus frogs, true frogs, cricket frogs, spadefoot toads — Harris County has them all. And, unlike our ancient relatives, we appreciate our frogs.
Now, we will discuss two of these families – Hylids (treefrogs) and Ranids (true frogs). There are four treefrog species that can be encountered at Jesse Jones Park and three species of true frogs, also referred to as Lithobatids.
Those marketing delights, treefrogs or Hylids, are best observed at night throughout the area. Curious anuran enthusiasts can observe such species as the Green Treefrog (Hyla cinerea), Squirrel Treefrog(Hyla squirella) or one of two species of gray treefrog — Cope’s Gray Treefrog (Hyla chrysoscelis) or the Gray Treefrog (Hyla versicolor), Look for these colorful treefrogs at night on windows or in the day hiding in bromeliads, flower pots or on the underside of huge leaves such as those on banana trees. If you can’t find any in those locations, the Houston Zoo has quite a collection.
Harris County’s true frogs (Are there really any false frogs?) are well represented by the American Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus), Green Frog (Lithobates clamitans) and Southern Leopard Frog (Lithobates sphenocephalus). Recently, the Southern Leopard Frog has been the subject of a taxonomic war between herpetologists — scientists who study reptiles and amphibians. Some people think that the Southern Leopard Frog’s scientific name should be Rana utricularia; others think that it should be Lithobates sphenocephalus. That’s why if someone looks it up in a field guide or other identification manual, they could see both names being used. However, the organization which assigns scientific names to animals and plants ruled in favor of Lithobates sphenocephalus. Look for these fascinating amphibians in the small pond in our Bog Garden.
To possibly see some of these remarkable amphibians in person, visit Jesse Jones Park & Nature Center from now through September. Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center is located at 20634 Kenswick Drive in Humble. All programs are free of charge and open to the public.
