Cocoa-Kissed Red Velvet Pancakes Recipe courtesy of Nestlé Servings: 10 pancakes 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup granulated sugar 3 tablespoons Nestlé Toll House Baking Cocoa 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 large egg 1 cup reduced-fat buttermilk or low-fat milk 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon red food coloring heart-shaped pancake cutters or cookie cutters (optional) butter, for garnish (optional) powdered sugar, for garnish (optional) maple syrup, for garnish (optional) fresh berries, for garnish (optional) In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt; stir well.

In separate large bowl, whisk together egg, buttermilk, unsalted butter, vanilla extract and food coloring. Add to flour mixture; stir to combine. Allow mixture to sit 5 minutes.

Heat nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Brush with oil or butter. Add about 1/4 cup batter to skillet. Cook about 2 minutes, or until bubbles start to form on top. Flip and cook 1-2 minutes, or until bottom is lightly browned. Serve immediately with butter, powdered sugar, syrup and berries, if desired.

Tip: If using pancake or cookie cutters, be sure to coat with oil so pancakes don’t stick. Place cutters in skillet and pour batter into cutters. Remove cutters before flipping.

Love is in the Air!

Happy Valentine’s Day! The red and pink in February reminds us of how much we love (or hate) love, but we also know love does not always last forever. If you are married, and especially if you are in a second (or later) marriage, there are a few practical things you should be aware of with respect to your property interests.

Principal Residence (Homestead) The Texas Constitution and Texas Family Code have strong protections for a person’s homestead. In addition, the Texas Estates Code protects the homestead for a surviving spouse.

For first marriages, this homestead protection for the surviving spouse is generally not an issue because the homestead is often community property and all children are of the surviving spouse as well. However, when a spouse dies leaving children from a prior marriage, the surviving spouse and the children may be surprised to learn the nature of their property interests. Let’s look at a couple of ways this plays out every single day.

Example 1 – Community Property (CP) Husband and Wife are in a second marriage. Both have adult children from prior marriages. Husband and Wife bought their home together after they married, and it is their primary residence and homestead. Wife dies first without a will. At Wife’s death, Husband retains his CP ownership interest (50%) and Wife’s CP ownership interest (50%) passes to her children.

Husband now owns the home with his stepchildren; however, Husband, as the surviving spouse, has the exclusive right to occupy the homestead for his life. He is also responsible for routine maintenance of the property and for payment of the property taxes. If there is a mortgage on the property, however, now Wife’s children are likely responsible for half of the mortgage Page 10 - www.theforestimage.com

principal even though they do not have the right to reside in the home. Husband is responsible for the other half of the mortgage principal as well as the mortgage interest. If Husband wants to sell the homestead, he will need the cooperation of his stepchildren and he will likely split the proceeds of the sale with them as well.

Example 2 – Separate Property (SP) Same facts as above, except Husband and Wife live in Wife’s home she purchased prior to their marriage and is, therefore, her SP. Upon Wife’s death, Husband has the exclusive right to occupy the homestead for his life. Husband is responsible for routine maintenance and care of the property as well as payment of property taxes and mortgage interest (if there is a mortgage), but he generally cannot be forced to move out unless he fails to meet certain minimum requirements and responsibilities. If there is a mortgage, Wife’s children, as her heirs and owners of the property (when there is no will or as beneficiaries under a will or other testamentary instrument), will generally be responsible for any mortgage principal even though they do not have a right to occupy the home.

There are ways to arrange your affairs if you want a different outcome. I encourage you to take the time to consult with an estate planning or family lawyer to talk through your goals.

If gift-giving isn’t your strong suit, occasions like Valentine’s Day are likely to bring on stress and worry, but procrastinating will only serve to elevate your unease.

Follow these steps to simplify your shopping, and while you may not come to love the task of finding the perfect gift, your loved one will undoubtedly appreciate your effort.

1. Browse for ideas online. Many retailers offer special promotions and gift idea sections on their websites, so finding inspiration can be as easy as visiting the sites of your loved one’s favorite stores. There are also dozens of articles online to help get the ideas flowing.

Searches such as “gifts for horse lovers” or “Valentine’s gifts for a new boyfriend” will reveal a long list of ideas to peruse.

2. Keep it simple. Although the advertising industry works hard to convince consumers otherwise, Valentine’s Day isn’t really all about the bling. Sure, a pretty bauble is a welcome gift, but there are plenty of ways to show your affection that don’t require spending a month’s salary. A heartfelt card paired with a memento of a meaningful event or place in your relationship sends the same loving sentiment.

3. Make it a (different) date. For many couples, navigating the demands of work, kids and life make spending time together a luxury. Instead of fighting crowds at busy restaurants on the official date, celebrate your love on a day of your own choosing, when you can relax and enjoy the time together without the pressure to rush through dessert so your table can be flipped for the next waiting couple.

4. Give blooms a boost. A dozen long-stem red roses is a beautiful gesture, but unless your intended rose receiver is a strictly traditional type, try adding a little spice to your floral arrangement. Go for a bouquet in her favorite color, or have the flowers arranged in a practical vessel she can reuse to remember the occasion, such as a cocktail shaker or a watering can.

5. Go ahead, gift yourself. It may seem counter-intuitive, but finding a gift you’ll enjoy may inspire an idea for your loved one. The trick is finding something you can share together, whether it’s tickets to a show or his and hers mugs for enjoying your favorite brew. Just be sure the item is something your intended will share your enthusiasm for, or you may as well go buy a blender.

So, grab your jersey, and let’s take a journey through the epic history of the Super Bowl.

Imagine a bunch of football bosses sitting around in 1966, thinking, “Hey, why don’t we pit the NFL against the AFL in a winner-takes-all showdown?” That’s how the Super Bowl was born, but they didn’t have a catchy name yet. It wasn’t until 1969 that the term “Super Bowl” was coined by Lamar Hunt, who was inspired by his kids’ “Super Ball.” The rest is history.

Sure, the game’s great, but what about that halftime show?

Back in the day, it was all about marching bands and traditional stuff. But then, in 1993, Michael Jackson stepped onto the stage and changed the game forever. Now, it’s a star-studded, halftime extravaganza with the hottest acts in the music biz.

These days, the Super Bowl is more than just a game; it’s a week-long party. There’s media day, fan festivals, and celebs everywhere you look.

And let’s not forget, about the unsung hero of Super Bowl culture: tailgating. It’s a ritual where fans gather in the stadium parking lots hours before kickoff, firing up grills, tossing footballs, and sharing stories. The tradition of tailgating at the Super Bowl has been around since the early days, with fans creating their own pre-game party zones. It’s all about good food, great friends, and building camaraderie before the big game.

The Super Bowl is not just another football game; it’s an all-American spectacle. It’s about friends and family, unforgettable moments, and the art of tailgating. So, gear up, get ready for another epic Super Bowl showdown, and don’t forget to pack the grill and try out some of our epic tailgating recipes!

Kielbasa and Veggie Kebabs Prep time: 30 minutes - Cook time: 20 minutes Servings: 4 Ingredients: 4 wooden skewers 1 red onion 2 bell peppers 2 ears of corn, cut crosswise into 2-inch rounds 1 package Coleman Natural Polish Kielbasa, sliced thick 12 whole mushrooms 12 cherry tomatoes Soak skewers in water 30 minutes to prevent burning.

Preheat grill to 300 F. Cut red onion, peppers and corn into bite-sized chunks. Alternate placing kielbasa slices, onion, peppers, corn, mushrooms and tomatoes on skewers. Grill, rotating every few minutes until veggies are tender, about 20 minutes.

Chile Bacon Straws Prep time: 10 minutes - Cook time: 30 minutes Servings: 6 Ingredients: 6 slices Coleman Natural Hickory Smoked Bacon 6 wooden skewers 1 teaspoon Mexican spice blend prepared Bloody Marys Preheat oven to 400 F. Wrap one bacon slice diagonally around each skewer, making sure to overlap edges of bacon so there are no gaps. Don’t wrap too tightly or it will be difficult to remove skewers; try to ensure each end of bacon ends up on same side of skewer. Place each wrapped skewer on wire rack set over sheet pan with end seams down. Sprinkle spice blend over each skewer. Bake 25-30 minutes until bacon is brown, crispy and fully cooked to give straws their shape. Remove from oven and allow to cool. Gently slide skewers out of each straw using twisting motion. Insert straws into Bloody Marys.

Houston Methodist The Woodlands Welcomes David Bernard as New CEO The Woodlands, TX (Jan. 2, 2024) – David P. Bernard, MBA/MHA, FACHE, senior vice president, Houston Methodist, officially assumed the role of chief executive officer of Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital effective Jan. 1, 2024.

Bernard has vast experience within Houston Methodist, having started his career in the rigorous administrative fellowship program at Houston Methodist in 2000. He worked his way up to vice president at Houston Methodist Hospital and served in that role for 12 years. He has experience across various finance and operational leadership roles and built world class clinical, research and education programs. Bernard also led the DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center and the J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center to becoming nationally recognized centers of excellence.

“It has been an honor to serve within our values-based organization for nearly 24 years. I love Houston Methodist and our mission to serve others by providing unparalleled safety, quality, service and innovation,” Bernard said. “I am excited to help build upon the outstanding work started by my amazing predecessor, Debbie Sukin, and make our institution the very best it can be and serve our community. Houston Methodist The Woodlands will continue to lead medicine and bring the consistency and quality of service that our patients have come to expect.”

Bernard joins Houston Methodist The Woodlands after previously serving as CEO of Houston Methodist Baytown since 2015.

“In the past eight years, [Houston Methodist] Baytown has thrived, recently rising from No. 104 in Vizient’s quality and safety rankings to No. 2 for two consecutive years. Not only has he led the improvement of care but has shared his talents and passions to rally the hospital’s employees and physicians around a shared mission,” stated Marc L. Boom, president, and chief executive officer of Houston Methodist, in an email to all employees. “David is a very experienced leader and HMTW will be in great hands. I am excited to see what David can accomplish there.”

Bernard is excited to begin his new role and develop new relationships across the region as the leader of Houston Methodist The Woodlands hospital.

“The future of our hospital is bright,” Bernard said.

“We have an amazing culture and I look forward to working with our team to grow with our community, set new standards in care and service and introducing new and effective innovations to continue leading medicine in Montgomery County.”

Mardi Gras, also known as “Fat Tuesday,” is the day before Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of the Christian season of Lent. It’s a time for revelry and indulgence before the solemn observance of the 40-day period of fasting and reflection. The celebration began in medieval Europe and was brought to the United States by French settlers in the 18th century, where it found its true home in the vibrant city of New Orleans.

Mardi Gras is famous for its colorful parades, dazzling costumes, and lively music. Families come together to celebrate with joy and unity. Here are some traditions to embrace: Mardi Gras Colors: Purple, green, and gold are the traditional colors of Mardi Gras. Purple symbolizes justice, green represents faith, and gold signifies power. Incorporate these colors into your decorations and attire.

Mardi Gras Masks: Create masks with your family. It’s a fun activity that allows your creativity to run wild, and you can wear your unique creations during the festivities.

King Cake: A beloved tradition is the King Cake, a sweet, circular pastry decorated in the Mardi Gras colors. Hidden inside is a small figurine or bean, and the person who finds it gets to be the “king” or “queen” for the day.

Mardi Gras is a celebration of life, love, and community. Jambalaya Ingredients: 1 cup rice 1 lb smoked sausage 1 lb chicken, diced 1 onion, chopped 1 green bell pepper, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 can diced tomatoes 1 cup chicken broth Cajun seasoning to taste Instructions:

Instructions:

In a large pot, sauté sausage, chicken, onion, and bell pepper until browned.

Add garlic, rice, diced tomatoes, chicken broth, and Cajun seasoning.

Simmer until rice is cooked and flavors meld together.

Beignets Ingredients: 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast 1/2 cup warm water 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup whole milk 1 large egg 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour Vegetable oil for frying Powdered sugar for dusting

Mix yeast, warm water, and a pinch of sugar.

Let it sit until foamy.

Add milk, egg, sugar, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture.

Gradually add flour, knead until smooth, and let rise for 1-2 hours.

Roll out dough, cut into squares, and fry in hot oil until golden.

Dust with powdered sugar while warm.
