Site-Underconstruction

Our homes are our safe haven, our world of comfort. Just like the human spaces of comfort and familiarity, other creatures also seek a territory to thrive in. Converting this thought and sensitivity to become a foundation for our design, we created a space for the relocation and rehabilitation of four exotic birds species at the existing aviary at the Himalayan Zoological Park.

To give the birds a home and a harmonious environment that would allow them more than mere existence, we designed four spacious enclosures for the four exotic species: Lady Amherst, Golden Pheasant, Kalij Pheasant and Silver Pheasant. Each enclosure, shaped in hexagons, has been designed to allow the birds maximum movement and give the birds an environment closest to nature. The four structures have been made out of iron sections to provide the birds safety from one another and other predators. Replicating life in the open, many little elements have come together to create a balanced whole. There is a dust bath, a water body and also night shelters inside the enclosures. A keeper’s shed has also been made for the everyday up-keep of the space.

Our task in hand was, to retain the culture and spirit of the spot but also give it a comfortable, modern and more organised rendition. Redevelopment of Enchey Monastery

Project Facts Site Location :Gangtok, North Sikkim Status :Completed

To begin with, the Enchey Monastery has always been a place of significance. An 18thcentury structure, it had been given its last façade circa 1900s. However, during the 2011 earthquake in Sikkim, extensive damage was caused to the monastery. The disaster created a need for complete renovation and addition of allied facilities to the complex. To create any kind of change to the existing built environment, the team needed to take into account the existing traditional sentiments along with that of the growing population of Buddhists in the state, as well as the anticipated tourist footfalls. The team had to create an all-inclusive design. The new structure thus created has tried to evoke a feeling of eminence and retain its past aura in juxtaposition with a modern dimension.

Religion isn’t as simple as black and white: perhaps that’s why religious architecture isn’t either. These are spaces where pilgrims come from various walks of life looking to meet something over and above one’s ordinary existence. So how can a structure that houses hope, gratitude, eminence, grandeur and humility be simple. With that as a central idea, we endeavored to create a space which encompassed all of the above emotions together with the traditional Sikkimese architecture.

Gonjang Monastery
Project Facts Site Location :Gangtok, North Sikkim Site Area: : 2798.27 Sq. Ft. Status :Completed

The design intervention on the Gonzang Monastery, 6 kms from the heart of the Gangtok, was not on the monastery itself but on the many surrounding spaces, that could give the religious site a new dimension. Commissioned by Gonzang Rinpoche, the area sits on an altitude of 6066 feet. With religious sites taking its inhabitants and pilgrims at the centre of its focus, this monastery established in 1981 needed expansion – without interfering into its sacrosanct Buddhist architectural style.

On entry, the two-storeyed RCC structure houses a restaurant on the ground floor, public convenience in basement and a healing centre in the first floor. Below the main chapel and the terrace of the building, we designed a courtyard for the monks as an area for recreation. A meditation hall, next to the courtyard, was designed as a silent space for reflection and more. A hostel with individual rooms, with attached toilets, to accommodate (give number) monks, kitchen and dining were made for comfort, peace and contemplation. Retaining its ancient aura in the architectural thought, the additions were made to enhance the experience of those seeking for something higher.
