The Gordons move from NY to a small, out-of-town community. 12-year-old Gershon makes friends right away, but Blimi, a year older, refuses to allow herself to be happy in her new home.

Next door is a mystery—it’s a house with a tall gate, and strange noises emanate from it late at night. Gershon and his 2 friends decide they will try to uncover the mystery of who exactly lives in that house and what goes on there.

Unbeknownst to them, a pair of criminals live there, men who are running an illegal zoo in their home.

They only allow the animals out at night—hence the tall fence (so no one should see the animals) and the strange night noises. When the men become aware that Gershon and his friends are snooping on them, they decide to kidnap them.
