FROM THE PUBLISHER
SUN VALLEY WINTER/SPRING 2020
Dear Readers,
U
PUBLISHER / OWNER Randy Schaeffer
sually this space is reserved for the publisher to tell you what a wonderful summer we had or what we should be thinking about for the upcoming winter season. Yeah smokin’ hot runs down Baldy, all the wonderful activities that our valley has to offer and don’t forget the rest of Idaho with all that it has to explore. But we have some other obligations that we might think about. And that is the many charitable organizations we have in our community. These range from helping the needy, youth development, recovery assistance, etc. A wonderful resource to help you choose which organization you want to help is the Giving Guide of the Wood River Valley, which is distributed in the magazine racks of the Sun Valley Source and other strategic locations in the valley. We encourage you to help these deserving organizations with your time or contributions. See you on the road, Randy Schaeffer, Publisher/Owner

SUN VALLEY SOURCE
“Beneath a cherry tree, or an apple, or any flowering shrub of the garden, is an excellent place to bury a dog. Beneath such trees, such shrubs, he slept in the drowsy summer, or gnawed at a flavored bone, or lifted his head to challenge so strange intruder. These are good places, in life or in death.... But there is one best place to bury a dog. One place that is best of all. If you bury him in this spot, the secret of which you must already have, he will come to you when you call – come to you over the grim, dim frontiers of death, and down the well-remembered path, and to your side again. And though you call a dozen living dogs to heel, they should not growl at him, nor resent his coming, for he is yours and he belongs here. People may scoff at you, who see no lightest blade of grass bent by his foot, who hear no whimper pitched too fine for mere audition, people who may never really have had a dog. Smile at them then, for you shall know something that is hidden from them, and which is well worth knowing. The one best place to bury a dog is in the heart of his master.”

RETAIL THERAPY Alive and well in Sun Valley
P
By Deborah Burns
eople choose travel to destination resort spots for many reasons. In Sun Valley they choose the Mountain for skiing and adventure, they choose the town for dining, après ski and yes, they choose shopping because let’s face it – it’s SHOPPING! On low-light days and snowy afternoons, lunching and shopping are great pastimes. The fabric of a town can be found in its retail stores, as the merchandise speaks to the lifestyle of the resort and the hand-picking of goods for the visiting guests. To gain a perspective to what is happening in town, guests frequently stop in to see their favorite places and catch up on ‘local gossip’ and ‘what’s going on’ with local retailers. The shop owners in Sun Valley begin readying their stores, after Halloween by bringing in an abundance of merchandise, holiday decorations and cheer for the arrival of visitors. They strive to make their shops warm, cozy and inviting, knowing that this will be home for the holiday season. Retailers who actively choose careers in customer service, invite you into their world, to share their passion for product and place. Shopping is a sensory pastime that can evoke fun, romance and excitement. Touching the fabric, trying on sizes, smelling the delicious aroma of spruce and gingerbread candles, viewing dazzling lights and falling snow all add to the enchantment. A bite to eat and a relaxing glass of wine top it off. Shopping is therapy, and losing yourself in a day on the streets in town can be one of your fondest memories. F

E-bikes 101 By Jim Santa
C
hances are if you’re reading this article you have an interest in electric bicycles, and well you should! E-bikes, aka pedelecs and pedal assist bikes, represent the fastest growing segment of the bicycle industry today. While e-bike popularity has been trending for some time in Europe, in comparison has only recently begun to catch fire here in the U.S. marketplace. This article is meant to help answer some of the questions most people have regarding e-bikes, so we’ll start with the basics.
20
SUN VALLEY SOURCE
First, there are 3 different classifications when it comes to e-bikes and these are as follows:
CLASS 1: PEDAL ASSIST
Pedal assist electric bikes, also commonly referred to as “pedelecs,” are equipped with electric motors that only work while the bike is being pedaled, and that are activated by some sort of pedal action sensor designed to detect when the bike is being used. In the United States, pedelecs are limited to 20 mph and cannot use motors that exceed 750 watts.
CLASS 3: SPEED PEDELECS
You know you want one.
Speed pedelecs, sometimes called “S-pedelecs,” are very similar to normal pedelecs in terms of their basic operation, with the important distinction that speed pedelecs make it possible for riders to combine the power of their legs with the power of the motor to achieve speeds up to 28 mph. S-pedelecs lack a throttle but can be equipped with a motor rated at up to 750 watts for pedal assist purposes only. Next there are two different configurations of motor/ drive systems, center drive and hub drive. Center mount/ drive systems put all the weight low and in the center of the bike for the best balance and performance, where in hub drive systems the motor is mounted within either the front or rear wheel hub. Most hub drive bikes are of the Class 2 variety which include a throttle. At Sturtevants, we focus primarily on Class 1 center drive models as most legislation on bike paths and Greenbelts, as-well-as mountain bike trails, is written to allow Class 1 bicycles but not the others. And as mentioned, center drive models will offer the best balance and performance. And perform they do! The most impressive thing about these bikes is how intuitive they feel and how much it’s like riding a “regular” bike. The drive systems in these bikes utilize pressure sensors that read the rider’s power input up to 1000 times per second. Push harder on the pedals and more power is applied, just like riding a regular bike. They also have different levels of assistance that are selected via a control unit mounted on the handlebar, offering levels of assistance from 50-300% of the power applied by the rider. E-bikes are now offered in every style of bike you may desire. So whether it be a mountain bike, kid and cargo hauler, commuter, road or gravel, or simply for a quick spin around town, there is an e-bike to fit your style and needs. Of course the best way to experience what e-bikes have to offer is to take one out for a spin and most shops that sell e-bikes also offer rentals. So get out and experience what these bikes have to offer, I can pretty much guarantee that you’ll be impressed! F
CLASS 2: POWER ON DEMAND
The key difference between power on demand electric bikes and pedal assist electric bikes is that power on demand bikes allow riders to activate and control the motor, regardless of whether or not they’re actually pedaling. Most power on demand bikes give riders full control of the motor by using a throttle, button, or trigger located on the handlebars; some models may also include a pedal activator as well. As with pedelecs, power on demand bikes are limited to 20 mph and 750 watt motors. SUN VALLEY SOURCE

Winter Flyfishing IN SUN VALLEY
By Bryant Dunn
©2019
W
hen winter arrives in Sun Valley, all eyes turn upward to the snowy slopes of Bald Mountain. Town bustles with excited skiers and snowboarders. Shoppers wander the streets stocking up for holiday giftgiving and locals and visitors alike share the vibe that only new snowfall and the promise of powder snow can bring. For many, however, it is the recreational option at the foot of America’s first ski resort that demands primary attention. After all, wintertime also offers amazing flyfishing for those equipped to handle the cold and snowy days along the banks of the Big Wood River. The Wood, as local fishermen refer to the crystal clear freestone stream, offers excellent flyfishing for rainbow trout and a handful of brown trout along its 30 some miles of meandering riffles, runs and pockets. Although wet fly fishing with mayfly and stonefly nymphs and midge and caddis pupae tends to be most effective during the bulk of the wintry months, dry fly fishing, especially with minute black and white midge patterns also known as snowflies, can be superb during the warming, late-season months of February and March. In fact, many local anglers prefer the fishing in winter due to the absence of large crowds of fishermen and the seemingly endless river miles left empty for those motivated to explore them. “Winter is one of my favorite times to flyfish and guide on the Big Wood,” offered Mark Belanger, Head Fishing Guide for Sun Valley Outfitters. “I often have the river to myself and my guests love the peace, quiet and productivity of fishing this time of year. The key is to be equipped
26
SUN VALLEY SOURCE
with cold weather gear and be prepared for lower temperatures.” Warm hats, fingerless gloves, fleece pants and long underwear, particularly wool products, are all necessities when fishing in the winter. Waders, felt soled wading boots and polarized sunglasses complete the list and a five weight rod with floating line is most commonly recommended for fishing on local rivers. For those with more time or motivation, the Big Lost River, South Fork of the Boise or Silver Creek are also excellent fisheries which can be accessed from the Sun Valley area. Local flyshops can provide guides and transportation to these rivers which is likely to increase hook ups throughout the angling day. Guide services can also supply lunches on request and the various tackle and flies that will give anglers the best chance at success. Among knowledgeable flyfishermen, the greater Sun Valley area is considered one of America’s finest flyfishing regions. The rivers and lakes of this area were favorite haunts of such celebrities such as Gary Cooper and Ernest Hemingway who spent countless days exploring the region with flyrods in hand. “There is a great history to Sun Valley, not just in the world of skiing but also in the realm of flyfishing,” continued Belanger. “Montana gets more attention but that is probably why, on any given day around Sun Valley, it feels like you have the entire river to yourself.” With such an amazing natural resource readily available, perhaps travelers would be wise to insert a flyrod into their ski bags the next time they visit. New snowfall or not, trout are always anxious to take a fly on the Big Wood river which just might lead to the highlight of a wintertime vacation in world-famous Sun Valley. F

n Tuesday, November 12, 2019 pilot Bruce McLean’s two passengers weighed in at 22 lbs each, with a 9.5 foot wingspan and a taste for carrion. His mission was to fly two adult female California condors for LightHawk, an international non-profit conservation group based in Colorado. LightHawk has worked with the US Fish and Wildlife Service California Condor Recovery Program since 2014, tracking missing birds from the air, as well as helping to transport condors through flights like this, to increase genetic diversity in the captive breeding population, and for release into the wild. When pilot Bruce, owner of AirSunValley, a local Part 135 air charter company, learned that a LightHawk volunteer pilot and plane were needed to transport two previously unpaired female condors from Santa Barbara Zoo to the Oregon Zoo, he knew it was a flight he’d like to make in his Pilatus PC12 Turboprop. Both zoos are partners in the United States Fish and Wildlife Service’s California Condor Recovery Program. The move will enable these birds to be paired with other birds per geneticist recommendations to improve genetic variation among the species, and this mode of transport minimizes stress on these wild birds.
28
SUN VALLEY SOURCE
“Being crated and transported is very stressful for the condors as they are most often treated with a hands-off approach. Being confined and in the presence of people, often for as much as 2 days of driving, is hard on them. Flying them on private planes is the absolute best possible scenario.” — Kelli Walker,
Senior Keeper California Condors, Oregon Zoo
LightHawk’s conservation team works closely with partners on a broad array of environmental issues throughout North America. These flights are made possible by 300 volunteer pilots like Bruce, who donate their talent, time, planes and fuel to help the planet. The California condor was one of the original animals included on the 1973 Endangered
“As a Sun Valley resident and local pilot, being able to combine my passions for flying and the environment in meaningful ways such as with condor transportation missions for LightHawk, is both extremely rewarding and an honor.” — Bruce McLean
If you would like to see condors up close, we are lucky to have access nearby in Boise at the World Center for Birds of Prey.
Species Act and is classified as critically endangered. In 1982, only 22 individuals remained in the wild and by 1987, the last condors were brought into human care in an attempt to save the species from extinction. Thanks to a cooperative recovery program, the world’s California condor population now totals close to 500 birds, most of which are flying free. And fly they do with a 9.5 ft wingspan. The movements of the condor are remarkably graceful. The lack of a large sternum to anchor their correspondingly large flight muscles restricts them to being primarily soarers. The birds flap their wings when taking off from the ground, but after attaining a moderate elevation they largely glide, sometimes going for miles without a single flap of their wings. With pilots like Bruce, volunteering their planes and time, the condor – North America’s largest land bird – may continue to soar the western skies for generations to come. F

Leading off the Sun Valley Nordic Festival is the NordicTown USA Sprints, followed by the Festival’s kickoff party with live music at the Limelight Hotel on Main Street in Ketchum. Return to race headquarters at the Limelight on Friday for the BMT Expo with industry insiders and goods and bib bag pickup. Close to 1,000 skiers will toe the line for the Boulder Mountain Tour on Saturday and celebrate the accomplishment at an awards party that evening. Everyone is encouraged to try out the latest and greatest equipment at Demo Day Sunday at famed Sun Valley Resort. The Full Boulder begins outside of historic Galena Lodge in spectacular Senate Meadows. The gently rolling terrain of the 34-kilometer course is friendly to skiers of all ages and abilities. For families wanting to enjoy the course with small children or those new to the sport, the 15-kilometer Half Boulder is an excellent option. Beginning at Baker Creek, the Half starts and finishes on the Full Boulder course. Supported by veteran race organizers and experienced volunteers, the BMT is an experience that will be enjoyed by one and all and long remembered. Sun Valley is one of the top-rated resorts in the country because the silky fresh powder of the high desert is like no other. A blue bird day for any skier on Baldy means top to bottom 3,400 vertical feet or swooshing into the bowls with a high-speed lift at the bottom ready for you to go again without a moment to lose. Baldy is also known for its internationally revered and exceptional grooming and snowmaking and its wide-variety of terrain from glade and off piste skiing to bumps and jumps. It’s also a world-class mountain offering a gondola ride to the world famous Roundhouse Restaurant and another few minutes further on a high-speed quad to a 360 view at just below 10,000-feet at Lookout Lodge from the top of Baldy. For those who want a little more ease or those just starting out on the slopes, Dollar Mountain is the answer where the love of skiing began for so many who graduate to Baldy. A spacious lodge with all the Sun Valley fixings, Dollar is suited for kids, families and anyone wanting to learn to ski. Sun Valley’s impeccable standards are no different at Baldy’s lodges with delicious dining at Seattle Ridge, River Run and Warm Springs. No lift lines, a top-notch ski patrol and lots of local resident ambassadors always ready to answer questions or join you on a chair lift is why “just living the dream” is the most common expression in Sun Valley.

Beautiful Work Spaces By Hayden Seder
A workspace can have as much impact on one’s life as home; after all, we spend roughly one-third of our lives at work. And for many, it’s not just that a space feel comfortable; it needs to provide inspiration, room for creativity, and make both employees and customers feel welcome. In Ketchum, three working spaces stand out as exceptional in their ability to engage with anyone who steps into them: the office of Suzanne Hazlett, artist Sharon Payne Bolton’s studio, and the newly remodeled Barry Peterson Jewelers. 40

HAZLETT WEALTH MANAGEMENT
S
uzanne Hazlett – financial consultant, artist, and founder of the Wood River Valley Studio Tour and the new Giving Guide of the Wood River Valley – wears many hats, but thrives on maintaining order between the many facets of her life, a fact reflected in her immaculate office whose every detail was chosen with care by Hazlett. “With this office environment, I just wanted it to be welcoming and calming, serene, beautiful, hopefully gender-neutral, and personal,” Hazlett says. “An environment – colors, textures, furniture, furnishings – it impacts people much in the way fine art does.” The space is indeed calming and serene; neutral grays and whites pop against gold accents and an abundance

of natural light shines in through windows that make up two sides of the office. On one side of the space is a round meeting table with white leather chairs and the other, a rugged area with four comfy, gray chairs for clients to feel more casual. Even the personal effects of Hazlett and her Director of Business Development Jenni Riley are perfection: the wall above the womens’ computer work stations is covered in white-framed, black-and-white photographs of friends and family. “We’re so focused on listening to our clients and learning what we can about their aspirations and resources, their personal stories. I had previously thought that to introduce my own personal life into the office space took away from that focus,” Hazlett says. “So much of what we do is personal,” Riley adds. “We’re essentially asking our clients to tell us their life and completely reveal themselves. So, with our personal touches, it allows them to get a connection to us, for them to feel comfortable.”

SHARON PAYNE BOLTON STUDIO AND GALLERY
M
ixed-media artist Sharon Payne Bolton recently consolidated her old studio in Ketchum as well as her studio in the San Francisco Bay Area into a large studio space in the industrial area previously used as an auto shop. Despite the enormous amount of odds, ends, and artist’s supplies that were dumped into the space, Bolton has created an order in the chaos, resulting in a whimsical space that is lined from floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall with knick-knacks, vintage suitcases, trunks, drawers, hanging art, warm rugs, old books and so much more. 42
SUN VALLEY SOURCE
“I wanted a working studio but also a show space, a meeting space, an opportunity for artists who maybe haven’t ever shown their work,” says Bolton. Bolton moved into the space in July 2019 and had to quickly get things in order for her participation in August’s Wood River Valley Studio Tour. The studio space has a kitchen area, a back office with rows of Christmas lights overhead and trunks and drawers stacked to the ceiling, plenty of working space for Bolton to create her art and also room for workshops that she plans to teach in her new space. The eye
can hardly decide where to go in this playful spot: a homemade bookcase showcases vintage perfume bottles, old radios, boxed dioramas, vintage cameras, and seashells. An entire wall is covered in vintage valises, the first of which she got in college and just continued to collect. It is truly the space of a creative.

BARRY PETERSON JEWELERS
arry Peterson’s jewelry shop on Sun Valley Road opened 48 years ago and has had the same interior design and showcases for the last 28. It was time for a revamp, the result of which is a much more modernized showroom with an open seating area in the center underneath a beautiful chandelier, a workshop space on the floor, new showcases, and a meeting area. “The cases were tired and we were tired of them,” Peterson says. “It was a beautiful store but the way it was laid out was more of a traditional, old-school retail jewelry layout where we were pretty much working over a showcase with clients. I wanted to give a more ‘gallery-feel’ to the store and to stand alongside the customer instead
of across the case from them.” One of the biggest changes was moving part of Peterson’s workshop from the second floor onto the showroom. While Peterson has always made jewelry for the store (the original store was just his designs), many of his customers had no idea that he actually made jewelry, let alone on-site. “We do a lot of our own manufacturing and I don’t think a lot of people realized that with the workshop upstairs,” Peterson says. “In a lot of businesses, the trend is to buy from the source and we want to make it clear that we are the source. It’s homegrown product.”
Photos: Hayden Seder
Peterson would like to get back to the store’s roots and use more of his own designs or that of other jewelers in the Valley in his store. The new openness of the space also allows for some possible classes and seminars and maybe even jewelry workshops in the upstairs space. F SUN VALLEY SOURCE

he Valley Club’s $7.5 million renovation of its original Hale Irwin golf course (North and South Nines) is nearing completion. The South Nine renovation was completed in the fall of 2018, at which time the North Nine construction began. Having 27 holes allowed the Club to keep 18 holes available throughout the renovation project. All construction was completed by the fall of 2019 and will open for play in the spring of 2020. The primary goals of the renovation focused on enhanced playability for all levels, aesthetics and water conservation. Designed in collaboration with TVC member and Hall of Fame golfer, Davis Love III and Beau Welling, The Valley Club is excited to elevate the golf experience for its members. “The new design of the North and South Nines, complement the unique style of our Fazio Nine and takes better advantage of the beautiful setting we enjoy here in the Wood River Valley”, said Barry Bevers, in his 17th season as General Manager. The course will be more player-friendly and fun for high handicap golfers, yet more strategic and challenging for low handicap golfers. By adding an additional forward set of tees, the course provides beginners and senior golfers a more fun experience. All the courses are maintained at the highest level, while being good stewards of the natural resources and the environment. The Club has been Audubon Certified since 2008 and has been recognized as “Trout Friendly” by the Wood River Land Trust. Bevers added, “It is an exciting time for our members at The Valley Club. While we were renovating the golf course, we also dramatically expanded our Fitness Center, built two beautiful clay tennis courts and four new pickleball courts. The commitment to making The Valley Club the very best private club experience has never been higher.” F

Finding Solar Comfort By Dana DuGan
R
yan Allison kept noticing Sagebrush Solar trucks parked at the Wood River YMCA. Allison, the owner of the Wood River Inn & Suites in Hailey, had his interest sparked because he’d already begun greening-up the Inn. He wants to positively impact the environment and how people make choices about their own homes as well as travel choices. “The solar trucks got me thinking,” he said. “We’d done some changes already. We retro-fitted every bulb in the hotel with LED bulbs. I did 300 one day on my own. There are no fluorescents left inside the building. Or outside.” In fact, gone went the hotel’s cost for bulbs in its budget since each bulb has a 25-year warranty. This was a new concept for a man who has been around the hotel business for years. Allison’s family once owned the Tamarack Lodge in Ketchum, and built the Wood River Inn in 1998. He took over running the hotel more than a decade ago. In 2014, he moved with his family to the Wood River Valley from Seattle, where he operated a wine bar, Cellar 46 on Mercer Island. He had a vision to remake the Wood River Inn, located on Hailey’s Main Street, into a boutique hotel. As with most hotels, a large portion of the operating budget is spent on energy. For that reason, Allison had recently installed energy-saving motion detector Verdant thermostats in every room.
52
SUN VALLEY SOURCE
“Everything was running full blast all the time,” he said. “It now goes to a default. There has been a substantial energy reduction. Guests now walk into ambient rooms. Technology is helping us.” Next step. In spring 2017, Allison contacted Billy Mann, owner of Sagebrush Solar in Ketchum, which had recently merged with AltEnergy in Virginia. Previous installations have included the YMCA, the Ore Wagon Museum which helps to power Ketchum City Hall and numerous private homes in the valley. Things happened quite swiftly after that. The main hurdle was affordability. Mann says he is aware that for business owners and home owners, the largest barrier can be the up-front costs. But Mann makes it his mission to ensure his clients have options to fund their projects. New funding options – grants and impact investing – allow progress to be made with homeowners who are leaning towards solar energy. Allison added that he wants to create awareness for green hotels and for making these kinds of changes in business. “You can invest in systems somewhere even if it’s not your house and use those renewable energy credits for nonprofits or other business or organizations, which is what happened at the Y,” Mann explained. “It’s so important for people to think like this.” It’s why he does what he does and why people like Allison can help change the way people travel and what they take away from a visit; not just comfort and recreation, but thoughtful ideas on how to live better and in harmony with the earth. dventure is a big part of Jeff and Paige’s relationship. Together, they fly-fish, mountain bike, surf and ski, just to name a few, always pushing the limits and looking for new activities to explore. The many memories they had created in Sun Valley made it a natural fit for their wedding venue. It offered their guests endless adventures, and they were excited for their friends and family to experience the magic of the town. The wedding and reception were designed 7, 2019 to reflect Jeff and Paige’s laid-back California personalities with a twist of 1920’s glam. “We wanted our wedding to feel like an intimate, old-world dinner party set in a rustic winter wonderland with all of our favorite people,” said Paige. Officiated by Deacon Clyde, Paige’s uncle, the interactive and light-hearted Catholic ceremony at Our Lady of the Snows was warmly lit by the church’s famous cascading crystal chandelier and candle-lit windows that framed the surrounding snow-covered trees and visiting elk. The cozy Valley Club reception adorned with countless candles, winter greens, mistletoe, gorgeous La Tavola antique ivory lace and velvet table linens accentuated with gold accents, set the dreamiest ambiance. Beyond celebrating their love and newly established marriage, they wanted the weekend to encompass so much more. Opting to forego a traditional gift registry, they instead encouraged guests to donate to a local charity close to their hearts. They chose Higher Ground, in honor of Jeff’s father’s career as a U.S. Naval fighter pilot and Paige’s Grandfather’s service as a WWII Navy Vet. Adventure, for all, awaits! F

Truly Breathtaking
O
n a late September day, the air was crisp, but the sun was bright with an autumn amber hue, heralding the perfect day for Katie and Ian to be married. Familiar with the venue and town from growing up here, Trail Creek at Sun Valley was Katie’s dream location to wed. Once Ian saw the setting against the beautiful backdrop of Bald Mountain, it didn’t take much convincing to get him on board. Teaming up with Katie’s mom who is an interior designer, Katie’s bridesmaid who is a florist, and Diane Pugmire an event coordinator, the event rich in color, texture and fall vibes came together. Ensuring no detail was left untouched, the bride and groom set out to make their wedding one of a lifetime. The ceremony, framed by a custom, asymmetrical arch showcased the couple along with their bridal party against the picturesque Bald Mountain. Immediately afterwards, cocktails were served on the lawn while Katie and Ian took photos with their families and friends which brought many laughs and tender moments. As the sun set, the guests moved into the pavilion where they were greeted by a scene that embraced a rustic feel with sophisticated flair. Tables were draped with slate blue linens, navy chargers and

rust napkins. The oversized floral centerpieces featured shades of blue hydrangea, rust and red roses, eucalyptus and tufts of pampas grass in brass bowls. The head table had the personal touch of the bride and groom’s monogram embroidered on them. Katie wished to bring nature indoors, so the design team created a living wall of trees in fall tones behind the head table. Dinner and dancing followed Katie and Ian’s grand entrance as husband and wife along with memorable toasts given by the maid-of-honor, best man, and the father of the bride. The best man brought the crowd to tears of laughter as he retold the tale of how Katie and Ian met at a bar with skinny jeans and country dancing near their home in Denver. Katie and Ian left Sun Valley the following day and set off on a road trip home to Denver, stopping in the Palisades for a mini honeymoon and some quiet time to reflect on the memorable weekend and to begin planning their next big adventure! aitlin and Brandon’s story began when they walked down the aisle together at her sister’s wedding as a bridesmaid and groomsman. Caitlin’s sister and her brother-in-law – Brandon’s best friend since the age of three – never thought that fateful night would be the start of Caitlin and Brandon’s lives together. After traveling the world, moving around the country, and living together for eight years, Caitlin and Brandon found themselves planning their big day
at the family’s home in Hailey, Idaho. The most important thing for them was that the wedding was special for their mothers and fathers, but it was also important that it would be a night remembered for its fun, laughter, and memories. To create this fairytale wedding, they were referred to the amazing Sue Bridgman Florist in Sun Valley, Idaho. They couldn’t have been more pleased with the flowers, designs, and services that Sue Bridgman’s team provided. Their day would not have been the same without that beauty. To capture these memories they found Kristin Cheatwood Photography. Aside from Kristin’s beautiful work, Kristin and her teams’ reputation for being polite, unobtrusive, and professional made it easy to capture the most important moments of the big day so that they may be relived by Caitlin and Brandon for the rest of their lives. PURSE STRINGS AND POLITICS By Suzanne Hazlett, MBA, CIMA®, CFP®
Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands
“The personal is political.”
I
t is impossible to know who first uttered the phrase. The meaning is interpreted to convey that political and personal issues affect each other. Indeed, it may be argued our pocketbooks, while personal, are also political. The Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution affirmed the right of American women to vote. The year 2020 marks the centennial of women’s suffrage in the United States.
66
SUN VALLEY SOURCE
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution Passed by Congress June 4, 1919 Ratified August 18, 1920
Over the next forty years, women are expected to inherit $28.7 trillion in intergenerational wealth. (Forbes) 96% of women have a primary or shared responsibility for family financial decisions, and women drive nearly 80% of consumer purchases through buying power and influence. (Forbes) Women are the primary income earners in 40% of U.S. households. This percentage represents nearly a 400% increase from 1960. (BMO Wealth Report) In the workplace, 30% of private businesses are owned by women, while women hold 52% of management and professional positions. (BMO Wealth Report) Women are more educated than men. According to research completed by Georgetown University, women hold the following – 61% of Associate degrees, 57% of Bachelor’s degrees, 60% of Master’s degrees, and 52% of Doctoral degrees.
While early 20th century women controlled few financial resources, by 2020, $22 trillion of American personal wealth is expected to be controlled by women – more than half of the country’s private piggy banks. The Wall Street Journal has stated that by 2022, women will own more than 60% of the wealth in the country. For a multitude of reasons, this trend of growing economic power held by women is expected to continue.
The political power of women is also growing. According to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, there are apparent gender differences in voter turnout: “In recent elections, voter turnout rates for women have equaled or exceeded voter turnout rates for men. Women, who constitute more than half the population, have cast between four and seven million more votes than men in recent elections. In every presidential election since 1980, the proportion of female adults who voted has exceeded the proportion of male adults who voted.” As women gain in areas of wealth, education, and political governance, the connection between their financial and political franchise will continue to strengthen. “The personal is political.” F

seasonal wellness is possible
I
By Julie Johnson
f the idea of being ill, sniffly and sneezy all winter is dogging you, then NourishMe should be at the center of your seasonal wellness plan. Taking preventative measures is much saner then waiting to be caught by germs that’ll give you a head cold, respiratory illness or flu. These illnesses begin with a little clue, a wee symptom that an aware person will recognize, and deal with, before collapsing into bed, or worse, at the hospital. Sometimes illness can be an enforced break from your schedule but for the most part you’ll want to choose your own time and place for a vacation. So, take steps to prevent some errant bug or virus to be in charge. The key is to respect yourself. TIP #1: Are you tired? Learn to say ‘no’ to that extra glass of wine, hour of work or even the demands of friends. Powerful healing hormones are released in deep sleep and deep sleep only. Tip #2: Are you hungry? In our culture, hunger is most likely not the problem, though it can be in teenagers. When you sense hunger – rather than eating mindlessly – drink a glass of water. Dehydration first mimics hunger, and can set a person up for stress and anxiety that often inhibits sleep. REST AND HYDRATION ARE VERY INEXPENSIVE WAYS TO STAYING WELL. Having said that, there are some conditions that do hasten seasonal illness. I don’t know about you, but I am very affected, and become deeply chilled by cold wind. This can set me up for a sore throat, runny nose or congestion. This is when I reach for some seasonal wellness remedies. Elderberry keeps viruses from replicating. It also tastes great, and can be consumed all winter. Try Sylvie’s Elderberry Elixir; it’s like a flu shot in a bottle. She picks her own berries, and uses local honey in her unique recipe. Echinacea comes in capsule, tablet, tincture (liquid) and in lozenges. NourishMe has many brands of this potent herb, plus combination supplements that include echinacea. Zinc is an often overlooked immunity builder. It comes in capsule form as well as lozenges. Zinc is great for a sore throat, or as an alternative to blood thinning supplements like turmeric.
Vitamin C is a strong antioxidant that can strengthen your body’s natural defenses. We carry Billy’s Infinity C, which is sourced from real foods. Hands down, this is the best on the market. Slow cooked beef, chicken and/or vegetable broth is chock-full of nourishing vitamins, minerals and collagen. Broth can aid in alleviating symptoms of the common cold, by clearing mucus, opening respiratory pathways, and providing easily digested nutrition. It also contains the amino acid cysteine, which chemically resembles the bronchitis drug acetylcysteine. Essential oils can be very helpful. We like Legends, and other oils, by Floracopea, and oils in the Osha line. Chinese herbs are a go-to as well, my favorites are: Yin Chaio, at the first hint, and then Gan Mao Ling, if the cold has already settled in. Wellness also depends on community. We’re social animals but we’ve become isolated by our digital world, and lack of society. Eating together with family and friends is a traditional way of coming together. Digestion and assimilation are better when done in communion with one another. NourishMe carries an array of nutraceutical supplements, slow-cooked organic soups and a cozy family style café to satisfy all your seasonal wellness needs. Consider coming to our Tuesday Farmers Market’ featuring Waterwheel Gardens. It’s not to be missed. Given all these choices and a desire to be happy and healthy, wellness is possible no matter the season. F SUN VALLEY SOURCE
