FRESH PERSPECTIVES FOR THE NEW YEAR
T
he start of a new year is a time for reinvention, new choices, resolutions. As we transition from what felt like a very long year, it’s the perfect time to bring some sparkle back to your space. Here are a few tips on making your home a cheerful and inspiring place to create positive energy. COLOR PSYCHOLOGY One of the easiest ways to change the energy or vibe of a room is through a fresh coat of paint. But rather than painting in the same color, why not tap into color psychology to generate a positive mood in the new year? Color has an extraordinary power to change mood; for instance, the colors yellow and orange bring energy into a space while green or lavender instill calm. Wonder why you see so many red and rust walls in kitchens? This produces a hunger response. If blue or gray is your color, add crisp white and try a striation of warmer tone to avoid the dreariness of plain gray. 2

REFLECTIVE LIGHT One way to bring more sparkle, quite literally, to your interior space is to add different elements that have vibrance or light reflectiveness. If you’re considering painting, try picking a shade that is light reflective—most paint decks list how different colors reflect light based on a reflective scale of 1 to 100. If you’d prefer to go the opposite direction for a calmer vibe and to take down the brightness in a room, consider a paint with less light reflectance. If painting your walls is too drastic a change, go for some simpler additions to a room like stone or glass elements. A glass lamp or accent table can really glisten in your space and add that little bit of sparkle that you might be lacking. Even the smallest details like crystal bookends or onxy accents can do the trick. TACTILE ENJOYMENT The last recommendation for changing the mood of a room is to introduce a variety of fabrics and textiles. Suede camel leather, white shearling texture, hair on hide, Chenille, and natural fibers can all add different levels of texture in your home. For a winter vibe and an easy change, snuggle up in a weighted faux fur throw! Whether it’s a bit of sparkle you’re looking for, more tactile enjoyment, or a way to uplift your senses, Topnotch Fine Furnishings invites you to explore their many elements like throws and pillows ready to be taken home or speak to their team of designers happy to lend their expertise in transforming your home. hose opening lines from the classic holiday song “Silver Bells” are the perfect way to describe the feeling of walking down busy sidewalks at the holidays, seeing the businesses and people dressed up in holiday style, giving you that feeling of good cheer. It’s this feeling that inspired a campaign for holiday decorating, spearheaded by Bellissimo owner Terry Murphy and Hazlett Wealth Management owner Suzanne Hazlett. While Murphy has always decorated her storefront—as has most of the block where her business is located—this year she felt it important to try to get as many Ketchum businesses as possible to decorate for the holidays. “I think we all have to remember, we are a resort,” says Murphy. “So when people come to Sun Valley for the holidays, they’re spending a lot of money to travel here and enjoy our town. As business owners, we have the unique ability to make their experience special.” After speaking with Murphy, Hazlett felt called to the cause and

is decorating her office’s floor-to-ceiling windows for the first time and recruiting other businesses including retail, banks, real estate offices (anyone with a storefront) to follow suite. After COVID and what has been a tough couple of years for everyone, bringing a little sparkle back into our lives seems like a simple enough goal. “To have that positive, joyful, emotional connection to our community again would be really welcome,” says Hazlett. “It’s beyond just the physical aesthetic, there is something truly powerful in sharing festive energy. We all deserve it, we need it, we want it back. It’s time we all experience a little more joy.” The Dark Sky Ordinance that prohibits outdoor lights at night during most of the year makes an exemption for holiday decorations from November 20 through March 20, making it a time to go all out. And just as important as creating welcoming cheer for visitors is building the feeling of community this town has always provided. F

SKI TUNING Then and Now
By Dana Sterling
Not too long ago, ski technicians were armed with a plethora of both manual tools and basic machinery to perform their jobs.
A
variety of files were used to shape and sharpen edges and wide belt sanders were used to level and smooth bases. An old iron was used to melt wax into the base and a large torque wrench was used to test binding release values. For some even older-school tuners, it goes much further back but, you get the idea. Regardless of the different eras of ski tuning methods or a tuners approach, the concept and purpose for tuning has not changed. A ski is only as fun and responsive as the
28
SUN VALLEY SOURCE
tune it has and the condition it is in. Ski tuning is both an art and a science. It requires a trained eye and familiarity of both the ski and the skier. Today’s modern skis require a high level of postproduction finishing and maintenance to get the full performance out of the equipment, not to mention, when deterioration or damage from use sets in. As the sport and equipment evolve each year, so has the service shop’s ability to take the equipment’s performance, and the skiers experience, to higher levels through a more sophisticated approach with highly advanced machinery. For the evolved shop and technician, gone are the long sessions of pulling file, sanding bases, and using an old iron to wax again and again, or a torque wrench for binding testing. Nowadays, edges are shaped and polished with a computer controlled high speed ceramic disk and bases are leveled and structured with a digitally controlled multi axis stone grinder. Wax is introduced into the ski using hot wax and infrared technology and yes, binding
f
testing is done on a laser referenced, computer controlled binding tester. For your skis, all this techno babble (and a good technician) translates into more precise, sharper, and longer lasting edge angles. Faster, more durable bases which in turn deliver better maneuverability and glide with less skier effort. Who wouldn’t want that? For your boot-bindings system, it translates into more consistent and accurate release values, which can reduce the likelihood of those dreaded injuries. If you prefer to dig into the details, your local technician should be glad to bore you with language that you might not want to know or care about. Make no mistake, the ultimate ski service machine tool does the heavy lifting but there is still some hand-finishing involved post machine work that requires experience and a steady hand to further customize the product to the skier. To consistently produce a quality product, it demands years of quality tuning experience and a trained eye, but it also requires the ability and commitment to be proficient
231 in programing, processing, calibrating, and maintaining this sophisticated machinery. Not to mention a substantial financial commitment! This approach is a far cry from days of old, but one must thrive in this environment of precision in order to produce the highest-level product. One should expect to find this level of commitment and service at the best shops, including where I hang my hat at Sturtevants in Sun Valley. We take the time to understand and recommend a service, on an individual basis, because we embrace the range of unique ways we ski and the resulting preferences in our equipment. Therefore, we process skis individually, rather than the cookie cutter method. Expert or beginner, aggressive or cautious, groomed runs or the backcountry, old school or new school, we customize the tune for the need because the best skier is the one with the biggest smile on their face! A History of Hunting IN SUN VALLEY By Bryant Dunn
N
early 12,000 years ago, the first Native Americans migrated to and inhabited the mountains, valleys and plains surrounding Sun Valley, America’s original destination ski resort. Tribes such as the Sheepeaters, Shoshone and Bannocks thrived as a result of the bountiful natural resources endemic to the area. Among these, which included numerous forageable plants and a variety of fish species, perhaps the most significant food source was the ubiquitous big game that roamed throughout the region. Mule deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, mountain goat, moose and bighorn sheep were all target species of the region’s first hunters. Competition for the protein these animals provided included mountain lions, black bears and grizzly bears – the last of which was eradicated from central Idaho in 1941. Throughout the human history of the northern Rocky Mountain region and the greater Sun Valley area in particular, hunting has always been, and continues to be, central to the culture and identity of those who have called the Wood River Valley home. EUROPEAN SETTLERS When European settlers first arrived in the fall of 1879 to the south valley, hunting parties were a critical aspect of the small communities which struggled to survive their first winter in a new homeland. This need only grew as the valley population increased toward its peak in the late 1880s. Townships including Bellevue, known then as Jacob’s Crossing, Bullion, Hailey, Ketchum, Triumph and Galena, among others lost to time, depended on the local wildlife for their dietary needs. Significant overharvesting of bison throughout the North American continent in the 1800s by fur traders nearly resulted in that specie’s extinction. This lesson was not lost on state and federal government and as early as 1869, hunting seasons were being implemented across the country. With powerful advocates such as Theodore Roosevelt and George Bird Grinnell, the concept of wildlife conservation gained steam, an effort
30

spearheaded by hunters themselves in the effort to protect and conserve wildlife in perpetuity. This was an important development for the entire country and Idaho as well. As a result, sound wildlife biology and herd management allowed big game species to exist in consistent population densities within the carrying capacity of Sun Valley’s mountainous ecosystem. Due to this, the relatively high populations of Idaho’s big game and the expansive wilderness surrounding Sun Valley, the Gem State became famous for its quality big game hunting opportunities. ERNEST HEMINGWAY Ernest Hemingway, one of Sun Valley’s celebrity residents, spent countless days between 1939 and 1961 hunting the local mountains and valleys for big game and often was accompanied by wellknown stars of the time such as Gary Cooper among others. In those days, Sun Valley resort offered hunting as an optional daily recreation and Hemingway and the resort’s head guide, Taylor Williams, became fast friends. Many photographs exist of Hemingway and his wives and children afield in search of wild quarry and were often shared as marketing tools aimed at publicizing the wildness of Sun Valley in direct compliment to its luxurious lodgings, restaurants and ski slopes. Today, little has changed in regard to big game hunting in the Sun Valley area. Populations of elk are at an all-time high, mule deer remain numerous, pronghorn antelope and mountain goats flourish and moose and bighorn sheep roam as they always have, majestic and regal among the endless Douglass fir forests and alpine basins high above. Hundreds of local families depend on wild game to fill their freezers each year primarily through the harvest of deer and elk, using bows and arrows, muzzleloaders or rifles. The pursuit of big game in the modern day continues to serve many purposes above and beyond the filling of freezers however. It also provides opportunities for friends and family to unite in a common pursuit while joining together in hunting camps
to share stories and bond, often in a multi-generational fashion, in only the way the outdoors can accommodate. Idaho Wilderness Outfitters, Idaho’s most expansive land-based big game hunting outfitter, bases its headquarters in Hailey and offers backcountry camps throughout hundreds of thousands of acres of public land. The male and female guides, wranglers and camp bosses of IWO take great pride in providing big game hunting opportunities for guests from around the world. Continuing to promote this lifestyle and these experiences is a professional pursuit that is unique within the Wood River Valley and one that Idaho Wilderness Outfitters has become famous for since its inception in 1985. Looking forward to the future, it is crystal clear that big game hunting will continue to serve the critical role of conserving big game species as the most important tool of wildlife biologists who are tasked with managing Idaho’s wildlife populations. And of the many benefits of hunting, which include providing protein and the opportunity to share the wild places of the region with friends and family, the most significant benefit is to the big game species themselves through thoughtful, science-based management aimed at long-term population goals within the carrying capacity of the ecosystem. It is a fair statement then to suggest that Hemingway would be pleased to know that hunting, the tradition he valued so highly and to which he dedicated himself for so many years in the Sun Valley area, will remain a central aspect of the mountain culture he held so dear. ZIONS BANK BOULDER MOUNTAIN TOUR and the SUN VALLEY NORDIC FESTIVAL February 1-6, 2022 One of the crown jewels of the Gem State is the Zions Bank Boulder Mountain Tour, which wends its way through the pristine Sawtooth National Recreation Area north of Ketchum. Now celebrating its 49th anniversary, the BMT is one of the longest-running and most respected cross-country ski races in North America. Leading off the Sun Valley Nordic Festival is the NordicTown USA Sprints, followed by the Boulder Mountain Tour Expo featuring industry insiders, sponsors, goods and bib bag pickup. 800 skiers will toe the line for the in-person Boulder Mountain Tour and celebrate their accomplishment at an awards party that evening at Ketchum Town Square. On Saturday, February 5, the Full Boulder begins outside of historic Galena Lodge in spectacular Senate Meadows. The gently rolling terrain of the 34-kilometer course is friendly to skiers of all ages and abilities. For families wanting to enjoy the course with small children or those new to the sport, the 15-kilometer Half Boulder is an excellent option. Beginning at Baker Creek, the Half starts and finishes on the Full Boulder course. Supported by veteran race organizers and experienced volunteers, the BMT is an experience that will be enjoyed by one and all and long remembered. Virtual race participants can ski 15 or 30 kilometers on a course of their choice. Official BMT courses will be set throughout the United States, including Soldier Hollow in Utah, and The Meissner Nordic Community Ski Trails in Oregon. SUN VALLEY SOURCE
Sun Valley has been voted the #1 ski resort in North America by readers of SKI Magazine for the past two years in a row, and it’s easy to see why. Bald Mountain (the centerpiece of the resort) offers 3,400 vertical feet and over 2,400 acres of sustained fall-line skiing and some of the best groomed runs in the world. But Sun Valley doesn’t just have world-class groomers on offer – the terrain is varied and diverse, boasting exceptional tree skiing, wide open bowls, and bumps galore for those seeking an even greater challenge. Top it off with a bevy of high-speed chairlifts laid across the entire mountain, nonexistent lift lines, and immaculate base lodges and on-mountain restaurants, and you’ve got all the necessary ingredients for an amazing skiing and riding experience. Last season, the resort debuted its new Sunrise terrain, a 380-acre zone defined by its untracked bowls, steep tree skiing, and challenging chutes. Long known by locals as one of Bald Mountain’s premier powder stashes, Sunrise brings a new dimension to the Sun Valley skiing experience and offers thrills for expert skiers and riders looking to test their skills in backcountry-style terrain. The resort didn’t just add new terrain last season though; after skiing Sunrise, skiers and riders are brought to the bottom of the new Broadway high-speed quad, which quickly whisks guests up to the Roundhouse restaurant, the perfect spot for a lunch break highlighted by the fabled establishment’s legendary fondue and panoramic views of the Wood River Valley. After lunch, it’s just a quick ride up the Christmas express lift to get back to the top of Bald Mountain, where skiers and riders once again get to ask themselves that wonderful question: which way down?
DOLLAR MOUNTAIN TERRAIN PARKS
Dollar Mountain is Bald Mountain’s little brother and delivers fun for the whole family in an inclusive, friendly atmosphere. With seven terrain parks offering a variety of features for any skill level, it’s the perfect spot for both aspiring daredevils and experienced freeriders to push their limits and log some hangtime on expertly-sculpted jumps and purpose-built rails and boxes. Not looking to go airborne? Dollar Mountain has what you need, with plenty of uncrowded groomed runs available for novice and intermediate skiers and riders looking to boost their confidence and take their skills to the next level.

Winter Day Trips Sun Valley
un Valley seemingly has it all: exceptional dining options, awe-inspiring natural recreation, world-class events. But whether you’re new to town or a lifelong local, even the most enthusiastic of residents need to get out of town for a day sometimes. We’ve compiled a list of great day trips to take this winter that will give you a taste of something new but have you back in town by dinner time.
GALENA Located just 23 miles north of Ketchum on Highway 75, Galena Lodge is a perfect escape for the day into the Boulder Mountains. This communityowned lodge is surrounded by some of the best winter trails in the nation, including 50km of groomed Nordic ski trails and over 25km of snowshoe trails. Equipment is available for rent at the lodge and private ski lessons or snowshoe tours can be booked. Passes are required to use the trail system and can be purchased at the lodge: $18 for adults, free for youth 17 and under, and 38

$5 for dogs or snowshoeing. If driving snowy, windy roads isn’t your idea of a good time, take the free Ride ‘n Glide shuttle from town up to the Lodge. After you’ve spent the day enjoying the snowy trails, head inside for a hearty lunch. Be sure to take advantage of Twenty-Dollar Tuesdays—snowshoes, trail pass, and a warm mug of soup for $20!
acres of untouched terrain surrounding Stanley in addition to hundreds of miles of groomed trails. Both snowmobiles and snowshoes are available to rent in town. For skiers and snowboarders, there’s no chairlift but there are endless backcountry peaks perfect for skinning and finding untapped pow lines. Two cross-country ski areas are also available within a few miles of town if earning your turns isn’t your forte. Check out the Stanley outdoor ice rink for a day of skating beneath the towering Sawtooth Mountains. At the end of your day of outdoor recreation, be sure to hit one of the many hot springs in the area before driving back to Ketchum. Make a reservation at the Mountain Village Resort to use their Instagram-worthy hot spring pool with views of the mountains. Or talk to a local about how to find some of the undeveloped, more primitive hot springs located in the area. There are also tons of winter events in Stanley such as the Sawtooth Bonspiel in January or the popular Stanley Winterfest in Febru-
3
STANLEY The small town of Stanley is located in the Sawtooth Mountains just an hour’s drive north of Ketchum. Though most visit during the summer to enjoy hiking in the area or visiting nearby Redfish Lake, Stanley has plenty to offer in the winter season. Even better, the snow tends to last longer in this town at 6,200 feet, meaning you can winter recreate well into May most years. There are plenty of options for winter recreation. Try snowmobiling or snowshoeing on the thousands of

the lodge for homemade fare like chili and burgers or the Fox Den pub for a cozy hangout spot.
SOLDIER MOUNTAIN If a day of affordable, family-friendly fun is on your agenda, head 62 miles out of Ketchum to the town of Fairfield where the Soldier Mountain Ski Area has been operating since 1947. Since then it’s had several owners through the generations, including Bruce Willis who purchased the ski area in the late ‘90s and donated it to a non-profit in 2012. Under new ownership since 2020, the ski area has two chairlifts reaching up to 7,177 feet and a magic carpet for kids to learn on. It’s certainly not the same as skiing on Baldy, but you’ll get in some good turns on this tucked-away gem. The real attraction at Soldier is the Snow Cat skiing on 2,000 acres of skiable backcountry terrain. Book private excursions with a guide team to explore private pow in open bowls, glades, and trees. Prices for this amazing opportunity range from $350 for a single to $3,750 for a private day rental of the 12-seat cat. If you’re just looking to stay on the regular slopes, a day ticket is $49 for adults over 18, $29 for youth 6-17, and free for children 5 and under. Season passes and half-day tickets are also available as are equipment rentals and private lessons. At the end of the day, head to
TRINITY HOT SPRINGS There are many natural hot springs available for free in the Sun Valley area, but if you’re looking for a special treat, drive two hours to Trinity Hot Springs, located along the Middle Fork of the Boise River. The only certified “Naturliches Heilwasser” (natural health water) in north America recognized by the Institut Fresenius in Europe—the international authority on free-flowing spring sources of exceptional purity that contain beneficial minerals—Trinity was formerly Paradise Hot Springs before being purchased in 2014 by the Rock family. The beneficial minerals
f
in the water, including high levels of naturally occurring silica and fluoride, make these waters both healing and relaxing. Day passes for drop-in soaks are $15 for adults, $10 for youth 5-17 years old, and $5 for children under 5. If you plan to come back more than once, you might consider an annual membership which runs just $25/year for adults, $20/year for youth, and $15/year for children (annual membership dues include first soak of the year). If you’d like to keep the relaxation going, head from the springs to the spa for a massage or other body treatment. And if you find you can’t tear yourself away from the relaxing nature of Trinity, book a room or a cabin in one of their many lodgings. F

ART: JACK WEEKES
!
You come to Sun Valley for snow skiing but return for the memories. Where else can you recreate winter reminiscences where nothing changes, yet everything is new again. I BROUGHT SOME CORN FOR POPPING. nyone game for dinner at Gretchen’s and a movie? For as long as I can remember, the Sun Valley Opera House offered an après ski screening of the 1941 classic, “Sun Valley Serenade.” Star of the film and ice, Sonja Henie did not downhill ski. Therefore, Olympic gold medalist Gretchen Frasier performed Sonja’s scenes on Bald Mountain. Unforgettable landscapes from Serenade are still recognizable today. That’s the magic of Sun Valley.
A
OH, THE WEATHER OUTSIDE IS FRIGHTFUL, BUT THE FIRE IS SO DELIGHTFUL. No skiing, no problem. You can keep warm and cozy while enjoying the breathtaking Lookout views and a pot of fondue from the historic Roundhouse restaurant seen in Serenade. On a cold, blustery day, I revel in riding the gondola to the Roundhouse. Imagine how luxurious the gondola is in comparison to a highspeed chairlift. Yes, you can join in the fireside festivities without wearing ski boots and carrying skis. THE LIGHTS ARE TURNED DOWN LOW. As the sun sets over the outdoor ice rink, the famous Sun Valley Ice show begins. Families delight in the show from the deck of the Sun Valley Lodge or while seated along the sides of the rink, bundled up with hot cocoa and Irish Whiskeys in hand. As children, we sat on the bleachers and watched Olympians like Dorothy Hamill and Scott Hamilton rehearse. You never knew what legendary skater might appear on the ice. In 1992 writer Ray Grass of Deseret News aptly noted, “There’s more gold and silver on the ice at Sun Valley than in most banks.” We still adore donning the skating garb and getting out on the rink. I heavily advise against attempting a spin without taking a lesson or two first! HOW I’LL HATE GOING OUT IN THE STORM. There is something about the smells from a kitchen that bring you back to your childhood. Everybody always found their way to the kitchen, and it would emanate with laughter that rang throughout the house. Making warm memories with new and old friends through sharing a meal together is irreplaceable. The Sun Valley Culinary Institute is the culinary hub of the Wood River Valley. Housed in an 1880s-era building, you can feel the history when you step inside.
Whether it is learning new recipes with acquaintances, a romantic date, or bringing together friends for dinner with a renowned chef, nothing compares to sharing stories and creating memories around the kitchen table. IT DOESN’T SHOW SIGNS OF STOPPING. Sun Valley has a long and rich tradition of cross-country skiing. Established in 1973, The Boulder Mountain Tour (BMT) is a point-to-point, 34-kilometer cross-country ski race, part of the Sawtooth National Recreational Area’s network of groomed Nordic trails. Lifelong local Berit Campion was so tired after her first BMT, she fell asleep at the awards ceremony and missed going on stage to collect the prize for the youngest competitor. Campion grew up on the ski team, testing her mettle on the Galena Lodge Trails. Today, three generations of Campion’s cross-country ski together in Sun Valley. She often thinks of one of her college coaches, Ruff Patterson, saying, ‘Swedish proverb: There’s no such thing as bad weather only bad clothes.’ The infamous Joe Cannon no longer performs at the defunct Creekside Bar at Warm Springs, but you might be lucky enough to catch him in town at Whiskey Jacques. Though time moves on, much stays the same. One unforgettable winter experience that continues to be an annual tradition is gathering with friends and family on Christmas Eve to watch the torchlight parade ski down Dollar Mountain. F

DANI AND KJ
Their Dance
B
orn within months of each other in the same town, Dani and KJ have spent almost every year of their lives crossing paths. From attending Little River Preschool together, to becoming high school sweethearts at Wood River High School – Hailey, Idaho forever had a special place in their hearts. After completing their college careers at Boise State University, Dani and KJ knew that Hailey was home. Upon graduating, Dani found her dream job

as a Special Education teacher at Ernest Hemingway STEAM School and KJ quickly tied things up in Boise so he could also move home to start the next step of their lives together. After months of planning, KJ dropped down on one knee at Redfish Lake, on their boat with a backdrop of the beautiful Sawtooth Mountains. Short of breath and full of emotion, Dani managed – with great joy – to find the word YES. An engagement party at KJ’s childhood home and photos at the future wedding venue followed suit. The wedding took place on a gorgeous day in early June. Friends and family came from all over to share in making their wedding day the most memorable day ever. With such deep roots in the Wood River Valley, the couple were fortunate to have their venue at a close family friend’s 5 acre property in Bellevue. The perfect ceremony, encompassing love, laughter, and family, brought life to a party that proceeded to unfold on the dance floor. Dani and KJ’s first dance to the song Cover Me Up, started things off. As everyone knew of their love for swing dancing, the dance party couldn’t be stopped from there. The photos and memories from getting down on the dance floor will last them a lifetime. F

White Clouds to Roundhouse ALLIE AND MATT
A
llie and Matt’s journey together has taken them all over the country, beginning in Washington, DC where they first met and fell in love. Allie was in nursing school and Matt was working in the U.S. Senate. As a Seattle native, Allie had grown up skiing in and visiting Sun Valley with her family, and first introduced Matt, a Connecticut native, to the idyllic town over New Years in their first year as a couple. It didn’t take long for Matt to count Idaho among his favorite places. After deciding to move to Seattle in 2018, they meandered across the country and enjoyed experiencing many new towns and cities, but none as much as Sun Valley, their last stop before the final leg of the drive to Seattle. Sun Valley became a frequent escape for the couple for skiing in the winter and golfing, fly fishing or hiking with their beloved yellow lab Nala in the summer. Given their shared affection for Sun Valley, Matt thought it would be the ideal place to ask Allie to marry him. They got engaged on the scenic White Clouds trail with Bald Mountain in the background and Nala playing a key role. The couple knew instantly this is where they wanted to celebrate their marriage with family and friends. Amanda Seaward of Absolute Weddings 60

assisted the couple with their kickoff party at Whiskey Jacques, rehearsal dinner at Ketchum Grill, and ceremony at Roundhouse, followed by a reception at River Run Lodge. With the help of Tara Bella Flowers, Roundhouse was an unforgettable venue for the two to exchange their vows. The lodge was brought to life with elegant floral arrangements, candles, and gold accents, and guests were treated to a delicious meal of prime rib, an ode to Pioneer Saloon, and Nala-themed his and her cocktails. The night was filled with dancing, glowsticks, and cigars. Shortly after the celebration, Allie and Matt returned to Washington, DC to begin their lives together as husband and wife. F

Healthy Gut By Julie Johnson, NTP
the bloodstream. They also inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria by competing for nutrients that would otherwise be utilized by the pathogens for growth and proliferation.
Viruses cause inflammation.
I
f you don’t have a healthy response to inflammation you may get sick. Keeping your gut microbiome in good working order is the most direct way to keep your inflammatory response working in your favor. Pre-biotics is the way to achieve that. PROBIOTICS Many experts agree that prebiotic fiber is the single most important nutrient for a healthy gut – and hence a healthy immune system. In fact, prebiotics serve as a critical food source for the probiotic bacteria that occupy your colon and bowel. Without the fuel they need, your gut bacteria won’t be able to perform the host of functions they play in your health including reducing inflammation and improving your immune system. Prebiotic-rich foods include artichokes, garlic, onions, leek, asparagus, beetroot, cabbage, beans and legumes, leafy greens, custard apples, nectarines, white peaches, dried fruit, cashews, and pistachios. Probiotics help to strengthen the body against pathogens by improving the integrity of the gut wall barrier to stop harmful microorganisms from entering

ANTIOXIDANT FOODS Since your immune system can be altered by environmental, dietary, and lifestyle factors, it’s possible to strengthen your defenses through nutrition. In fact, when it comes to promoting a healthy immune system, nutrition is critically important. As you get older, it becomes even more important to eat more immunesupporting foods, as immunity typically declines with age due to nutrient deficiencies and impaired absorption. Antioxidants are generally found in plant based foods. The three most common are known as the “ACE” vitamins – beta-carotene (which is the plant form of vitamin A), vitamin C, and vitamin E. Red, yellow, and orange vegetables are rich in the antioxidant nutrients, lycopene, beta carotene, and vitamin C, and are a great support to your immune system function. DARK LEAFY GREENS are rich in folate, calcium, and antioxidants such as lutein and zeaxanthin. Folate is especially vital for producing antibodies that work to destroy antigens that can cause illness. When chewed and chopped, these vegetables also release compounds called isothiocyanates and indoles that protect against various carcinogens. They help reduce the activity of estrogen in the body and therefore have a twofold role in protecting against estrogen-related cancers. ONIONS contain prebiotic fructans, a group of complex carbohydrates that provide soluble fiber. This fiber passes undigested through the small intestine to the large intestine where it provides food for the beneficial bacteria such as Bifido-
bacteria and Lactobacilli. Onions are also packed with immune-supporting nutrients such as selenium, zinc, and vitamin C. Selenium, especially, is found in higher concentrations in onions than in other vegetables. Selenium plays a key role in immune system regulation. It stimulates the immune system to increase the production of antibodies and causes increased T cell and macrophage activity. This mineral also exhibits antibacterial and antiviral properties and may play a part in the management of inflammatory and allergic conditions. Onions are also one of the best sources of the antioxidant flavonoid, quercetin, which has both antiviral properties and histamine-regulating effects. GARLIC is one of the most effective natural antimicrobials, stimulating the production of white blood cells and acting against a wide range of bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses. It is one of the most well-known foods to enhance your immune system and fight against infections. Garlic is used to combat fungal infections such as yeast infections, athlete’s foot, and ringworm, and is a standard ingredient in anti-candida diets. Like onion, garlic also contains fructans which selectively stimulate beneficial
bacteria and inhibit pathogens in the gut. GINGER is a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that helps combat the effects of free radicals on your cells. It also has antimicrobial and antifungal properties and can help protect against oral and respiratory infections. Due to its high concentration of plant compounds, ginger has significant antiviral activity. It is also a useful cough remedy as it helps break down and expel mucous and clears your airways. MUSHROOMS have been used for centuries in Chinese medicine and were considered to be beneficial in promoting longevity and even immortality! Shiitake, for example, has been used to alleviate the common cold for centuries. It enhances host resistance against infections by bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses. Reishi is an antioxidant and an antiinflammatory that helps regulate the immune system by stimulating immune cells. Lion’s Mane, due to its polysaccharide compounds, also has immune-stimulating and anti-inflammatory properties as does Cordyceps and Chaga mushrooms. NUTS AND SEEDS such as chia
Genetics load the gun, lifestyle pulls the trigger. seeds, flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, walnuts, and almonds are a simple addition to many dishes to help support immune system function. They contain various disease preventing nutrients such as fiber and omega 3 fatty acids, as well as vitamins and minerals. Sunflower seeds and almonds, for example, are packed full of vitamin E which is a potent antioxidant known to reduce the risk of inflammation-related diseases, Nuts and seeds also contain high amounts of minerals such as iron, zinc, and calcium. Zinc, particularly, is a critical nutrient for immune system function. GREEN TEA has the highest concentration of polyphenols (antioxidants) which helps slow down the process of oxidative damage to your body. Green tea contains compounds called catechins, as well as the antioxidant quercetin and the amino acid L-theanine, all of which sup-
port a strong immune system. Every good choice you make with your food is a step towards future health. Since your immune system can be altered by environmental, dietary and lifestyle factors, it is possible to strengthen your defenses using nutrition. The scientific consensus is clear that plants offer amazing protective potential and that a diet high in fiber from vegetables, fruits, and unrefined grains and low in processed and chemically adulterated foods can enhance your immune system and protect you from a wide range of serious illnesses and diseases. You have the power to decide what you put on your plate. You can choose nutrient-dense whole plant foods with a focus on colorful vegetables and fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds that are going to buffer your defense capabilities. Excellent health is now a choice that is truly in your hands. F
