Finding Our Roots By Hayden Seder
TRENDS & CHANGE IN DEMOGRAPHICS ith the influx of new people moving to town has come a new demographic. In our lovely valley, new young families have selected this area to build or buy new homes to raise their young kids. It’s so wonderful to see this community growing with these younger generations. In years past, many clients sought out a “ski chalet” vibe for their mountain home because this was a second home for many. Now we are definitely seeing a trend to these homes becoming their main home and shifting towards a livable mountain modern vibe. This new mountain modern style brings a clean organized feel, while combining great new performance fabrics with textures that also provide a durable design.

People are so happy to be entertaining again. They want their homes to be welcoming, textural, and easy to care for. Between kids and work, homeowners are looking for furnishings that are well-made, easy to care for, and multifaceted. Luckily for this generation, the design industry has created many more opportunities in terms of products and fabric, particularly ones that can now work both indoors and outdoors. Brands like Sunbrella, known for their outdoor fabrics, have expanded their options greatly. By applying techniques traditionally used only for outdoor fabrics and products, indoor items can have that same durability and easy care, but with a look that suits all interior spaces.
NEW LOCATION Topnotch has recently found its forever home! They will be moving to their new permanent location in September 2022. The great news is the new showroom is located next door to their current location at 680 Sun Valley Road. Co-owners Arianne and Josh Heyser felt it was time to put down some roots for their business and recently purchased this commercial space. They feel fortunate to have found a space on Sun Valley Road where the business has been running for over 45 years. The space is currently being renovated, giving the Topnotch team plenty of time to design the new showroom and design center. The new location is all on one level and is 10,000 square feet. “We are blessed to have found a secure space to run our local business, and are overjoyed to have roots in the heart of Ketchum,” say Arianne and Josh. he repair center is located upstairs in the main store in Ketchum, however, drop-off is available at the Hailey and Warm Springs locations too. Sue Baker has years of experience doing repairs for Patagonia and can bring back-to-life any brand of outdoor gear. The new repair center is outfitted with the latest equipment for sewing, seam sealing, snap, and buckle repair and more. A close match can be found with their wide selection of fabrics, zippers, cord locks and webbing and some basic alterations are available as well. Sturtevant’s mission is to increase the longevity of your jackets, ski wear, tents, packs and sleeping bags. Their philosophy is to extend the life of your gear and keep it in circulation instead of ending up in a landfill. Children grow fast and it is easy to patch the knees of your child’s ski pants or to fix an expensive jacket to pass it on for many more seasons of play. No matter how hard you or your children are on your clothing, nearly everything is repairable. You’ll be pleasantly surprised after learning that your gear is not hopelessly ruined when you melt your jacket by the campfire, or your dog chews a hole in your pack or jacket to find that snack you forgot. Our outdoor playground is rugged and hard on gear, and so is our athletic community. Whether your sport is on the snow, on a bike or hiking, you can come to Sturtevants to tune your boards, bikes and now your soft gear! F SUN VALLEY SOURCE

AN ANGLER’S PARADISE
F
or Christmastime revelers across the world, December 25th serves as the annual day to exchange gifts, fill stockings and celebrate Christian traditions with friends and family. However, on the central Pacific island of Kiritimati, Christmas is a year round event. Commonly known as Christmas Island, named by Captain James Cook upon his “discovery” of the island on Christmas Eve in 1777, this central Pacific coral atoll is one of 33 tropical islands that make up the Republic of Kiribati and is located approximately 1300 miles due south of Hawaii just north of the equator. In the local Gilbertese language, ti is pronounced as s thus resulting in the pronunciation of Kiritimati equating to Christmas and Kiribati to keer-ih-bos. RECREATIONAL FISHERY This remote, palm tree-covered white sand island is known as one of the most spectacular recreational fisheries on the planet, offering world-class saltwater flats

fishing as well as deep sea fishing opportunities beyond its surrounding reef. Giant trevally, bluefin trevally, golden trevally, milkfish, triggerfish, a variety of reef fish and the ubiquitous bonefish swim the 150 square miles of ankle to waist deep water encapsulated in the island’s inner lagoon. In fact, by some estimates, the bonefish population of Christmas Island outnumbers the human population of 7,400 by roughly 100 to 1. ANGLING TOURISM Kiritimati’s primary export is copra, a product of the numerous coconut palm trees that blanket the island, but in recent history, angling tourism has become central to the atoll’s economy. Anglers, most commonly fly fishermen, travel to the island on a weekly Fiji Airways flight that originates in Honolulu. Once on-island, visitors are transported to their lodgings which are mostly spartan rooms that offer basic amenities as a base for long days wading the inner lagoon in search of the various piscatorial target species.
Recently, thanks to an exclusive joint venture between the Kiribati government and an American partnership headquartered in the Northern Rocky Mountains, Christmas Island Lodge (formerly the Captain Cook Hotel) is being renovated, remodeled and upgraded to serve as Kiritimati’s premier lodge offering catering specifically to adventurous anglers from across the globe. In addition to the comprehensive renovations of the 12 private oceanside bungalows complete with thatched roofs, air conditioning and en suite heated showers, the lodge is now connected to the new solar electrical grid which was installed by the Kiribati government in advance of the pandemic. LAUNCHSITE Among many advantages offered by Christmas Island Lodge over the few existing lodging options on the island is the private boat launch on the inner lagoon which has been established during the country’s pandemic closure. This launchsite, adjacent to the lodge’s private swimming lagoon, allows Christmas Island Lodge guests to be the first in and the last out of the back of the inner lagoon where the most desirable fishing opportunities exist. This launchsite is only permitted to Christmas Island Lodge guests and eliminates the lengthy drive and boat trip from the other lodgings located in Tabwakea, London and Poland on the west side of the atoll. The lodge’s location on the outskirts of Banana, a small village on the north central reach of Kiritimati, is most proximal to the airport and the highly coveted fishing destinations of the Korean Wreck and Huff Dam. This allows for minimal vehicle travel and a maximum of fishing hours each day. Additionally, with the advent of the Starlink global internet system, lodge guests will have unequaled internet connectivity while enjoying the sunset and fresh lobster and sushi appetizers each evening after long days on the flats. WEATHER Regarding the best time of year to visit Kiritimati, due to its location near the equator, weather varies little with temperatures only fluctuating by approximately 1 degree over the calendar year and settling comfortably in the mid-80s during the day and the mid-70s at night. As global tourism is steadily returning to prepandemic norms, international travelers are increasingly returning to exotic destinations like Christmas Island. And though, for most of the world, Christmas is celebrated just one day per year, adventurous anglers can celebrate Christmas everyday in the Republic of Kiribati which might very well end up being the holiday of a lifetime. F For more information on Christmas Island Lodge, visit christmasislandlodge.com or call 1-844-CILODGE (245-6343). SUN VALLEY SOURCE

Off the Beaten Path By Hayden Seder
I
t’s no secret that the Sun Valley area is… well, busier. Parking spots and reservations are harder to come by and the outdoors are no different: what once might have been a serene oasis that few other people knew about is probably seeing plenty of foot traffic. Instead of heading to the usual spots this summer, we’ve made a few recommendations for similar areas that you might not have been to or just might be a little less popular. Whether you’re new to the area or just new to these areas, remember to recreate responsibly!
38
SUN VALLEY SOURCE
Instead of hiking to Baker Lake
TRY HIKING TO
MILL LAKE It’s no surprise why Baker Lake is so popular: at about a 30-minute drive from Ketchum and a mileage roundtrip of 3.6 miles, it’s both family-friendly and easy to get to. But that close proximity makes it crowded and often after driving the 15 miles to the turnoff and another 9.5 miles on washboard dirt road, one discovers the parking lot is completely full. Instead, try hiking to Mill Lake whose turnoff at Prairie Creek Road is just three miles down the road from the turnoff to Baker. The hike is 4.5 miles roundtrip
dog beach. Instead of braving the crowds, try Stanley Lake, located seven miles west of Stanley. There are campsites, sandy beaches, and gorgeous views of the Sawtooths. Instead of walking your dog in Adam’s Gulch
WALK YOUR DOG IN
TAYLOR CANYON The maze of trails in Adam’s Gulch is a dream for hikers, mountain bikers, and dog walkers, providing trails of varying length and difficulty. But for that same reason, it’s often extremely crowded in summers and a fast mountain biker colliding with your beloved fur baby is a calamity to be avoided. Instead, try visiting Taylor Canyon. Located on the other side of the highway 3.5 miles north (roughly 2 miles past the turn to Adam’s Gulch), you’ll turn on Lake Creek Road and drive 1.5 miles to the end of the paved road and find a parking lot/ trailhead that leads you to the hike. To do the full loop of Taylor Canyon is a 4-mile hike with an elevation gain of 1,080. You and your dog will get a great hike and be back in town for afternoon beers with your pup on the Lefty’s deck. Instead of mountain biking Corral Creek
TRY MOUNTAIN BIKING
HARPER’S Corral Creek is a great ride, especially if you’ve just gotten off work or need to get a ride in quick; it’s only 2.7 miles, moderately rated, and just down Sun Valley Road. But that can make it very crowded, especially in the summer with the shade provided by Aspens. Instead, try Harper’s trail from the Lake Creek Trailhead. At 2.85 miles, it’s almost the same as Corral Creek but be warned, Harper’s is considered a more advanced ride. Depending on the time of year, you’ll be rewarded by biking through gorgeous meadows of wildflowers and, if you like to explore, you can dip into Adam’s Gulch rather than biking back the trail you came up. F
and 1,030 feet of elevation gain (184 more than Baker) and will reward you with beautiful lake views at the top. Instead of spending the day at Redfish Lake
SPEND THE DAY AT
STANLEY LAKE Spending the day at the beach while in the mountains is a glorious feeling, so much so that the splendor of Redfish Lake has surpassed its ability to handle the many, many people who visit each summer. Hoping to camp at Redfish? You’ll need a reservation months in advance. Looking for a spot on the beach? If you’re not there first thing in the morning, you might have to settle for the SUN VALLEY SOURCE

he Wood River Valley is home to roughly 70 nonprofit organizations, but not all of those organizations can boast that they are entirely cost-free to participants, like Swiftsure Ranch. This 31-year-old organization serves many in the community, from veterans to those with physical challenges, to the elderly, to those struggling with mental health, all through equine-assisted activities and therapies. A PATH-certified organization (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship), Swiftsure provides a powerful new paradigm for children and adults with challenges in the area. To learn more about this amazing organization, I headed to the 191-acre property located just south of Bellevue, where the organization has resided for 11 years. There are numerous outdoor arenas and paddocks on the property, a 20-stall barn and a smaller 12-stall barn for horses, five miles of trails (including control of one mile of the Big Wood River), a sensory trail, a campground/retreat loca-
tion, and a heated indoor arena. I’m greeted by Executive Director Paul Bennett who has been with Swiftsure for three years. 32,000-SQUARE-FOOT INDOOR ARENA Our first stop is the 32,000-square-foot indoor arena, the “heart of the organization,” according to Bennett. This arena allows Swiftsure to operate year-round, going inside for shade on scorching summer days and keeping warm from ambient solar heat in the winters. During COVID, this arena was a saving grace, as its size is big enough to provide enough air flow and social distancing that riders could still participate. The arena is also home to a lift for people who don’t have the physical ability to get on a horse, and a tack room with adaptive saddles that have been designed to help people of all abilities ride a horse. In the arena are three people receiving lessons atop three of the ranch’s 19 horses, two of them one-on-one with instructors and one boy with one instructor and two volunteers. The mostly hour-long sessions are tailored to each individual’s needs based on why they’re there. All Swiftsure participants are by referral only, whether from a physical therapist, a psychologist, or a doctor. Instructors come up with short-, medium-, and long-term goals with each referral, which they keep records of and update as progress is made. “Those goals might be, Can you listen and can you comprehend?” says Bennett. “For some of them, it’s a big challenge. Some are just working on communication, but there’s also comprehension and physical exertion, which works on core strength and fine motor skills.” EQUINE-FACILITATED LEARNING While riding a horse might not be your first instinct

for helping people, there is vast research showing physical, cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and social benefits from equine-facilitated learning. For those with physical ailments, riding a horse provides a unique neuromuscular stimulation; the horse’s gait is the closest replicating movement to the human gait and can be more effective than traditional, clinic-based forms of therapy. The horse’s adjustable gait promotes riders to constantly adjust the speed to achieve the desired pelvic motion, while promoting strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, and confidence. BUILDING A BOND Building a bond with a horse that a participant comes to see every week is important in learning trust and communication; horses are highly sensitive and acutely aware. “Horses are fabulous at giving you feedback; it’s unbiased and instantaneous,” says Bennett. The boy getting a lesson with three instructors is 9-year-old Noah, who has been riding with Swiftsure for four years. A shining example of the benefits of this program, Noah is a self-assured boy who I met in the tack room after his lesson. He was confidently putting away his and the other riders’ saddles and equipment, joking and laughing with the instructors. When I was introduced, he was a little shy (like any 9-year-old), but was happy to tell me his favorite horse (an appaloosa named Hoppy) and introduce me to the horse he had been riding that day, Henry. When Noah first came to Swiftsure, he brought a blanket with him and nervously sucked his thumb; now the self-assured boy wants to help everyone and brings a smile to their faces while doing so.
SUCCESS STORIES Success stories pour out of Bennett’s mouth; in Swiftsure’s 31 years, its helped thousands. Just in his own three years with the organization, Bennett has seen the benefits in so many individuals. He tells me the story of a boy with cerebral palsy whose family was originally told that he would most likely never feed himself, have much mobility, or live a long life. But since his family relocated from Seattle to Sun Valley for Swiftsure’s program (and others in the area) six years ago, he’s a regular boy who runs, bikes, and skis. “Now his mom says, ‘No other therapy could have helped him.’ That’s just one of hundreds of stories I could tell you,” says Bennett. STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS Integral to keeping this non-profit going are the staff

“Horses are fabulous at giving you feedback; it’s unbiased and instantaneous.” — Executive Director Paul Bennett and volunteers. While there are only eight full-time staff at Swiftsure, there are roughly 100 volunteers. With high-risk riders who might require four or five people at once for a lesson, there’s a big commitment on behalf of these volunteers. Altogether, Swiftsure helps over 300 people a year and sees 112 people a week.“Our instructors see the magic of what happens here,” says Bennett. “They’re involved in the big breakthroughs, the successes. The mentality here is, don’t tell me what you can’t do, tell me what you can do. We’re here to support you.” Just as important as the instructors are the horses. Each of Swiftsure Ranch’s horses are selected, trained, and cared for according to industry standards but also for requirements specific to the Ranch’s activities and clientele. Each horse must be carefully selected since they will be dealing with all kinds of individuals and circumstances. But funding for horses can be hard to get—pre-COVID, a horse ran about $6,000; now they cost about $10-$12k. WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE CARRIAGE Through the help of local Spur Community Foundation and Heart of Gold Foundation, Swiftsure recently received a four-passenger, wheelchair-accessible Waggonette carriage built by Bennington Carriages of England. The custom-built carriage has a hydraulic lift system and builtin aluminum ramps for wheelchair access, allowing those 42

who can’t or don’t want to ride a horse to still experience the beauty of the ranch. VETERANS In addition to current therapeutic riding programs, summer camps, programs with schools in Blaine County, and a senior riders and grooming club, Swiftsure would also like to expand its veterans program, which was just taking off when the pandemic hit. By working with Higher Ground, Hyperbaric Chambers, and the Boise VA, Swiftsure hopes to grow their services to veterans, ultimately resulting in veterans teaching other veterans. “That’s a much-underserved population in Idaho, where something like 10 or 11% of the population is veterans,” says Bennett. With so many great offerings, it cannot be stressed enough how critical donations are. All programs with Swiftsure are 100% zero cost to every participant. “If somebody needs our services, they get it,” says Bennett. Eighty percent of the organization’s revenue comes from private donations and private foundations, the other 20% from grants. During their annual Cowboy Ball fundraiser, on July 14 this year, Swiftsure raises 33% of its annual income. “We’re lucky to be supported by the community and hope our supporters keep supporting us.” F To learn more about Swiftsure and find out how you can donate today, visit swiftsureranch.org.

Water Conservation AT THE VALLEY CLUB

SUN VALLEY SOURCE
W
ater. The hottest topic in the valley. With the help of an exceptional team, The Valley Club has made some big changes to the golf course over the past five years, having spent millions of dollars in modifications and state-of-theart technology, all to be better stewards of the land. Their main goal is to provide world-class playing conditions while reducing The Valley Club’s water footprint. One of the major changes that took place during their renovation, completed in 2020, was a reduction of areas that require water. The club accomplished this by planting drought tolerant native grasses, increasing their amount by 17% throughout the course. These new native areas provide habitat to the valley’s animals, and club staff have noticed a rise in wildlife activity. Native grass areas along lakes, creeks, and drainage ditches function as a biological filter. These plants slow runoff and leach out any unwanted materials before it reaches any important bodies of water. This is a huge benefit towards protecting pristine rivers, lakes, and aquatic life that rely on them to live. They have also cut their water use by approximately 20% per night by installing a new irrigation system. The new system allows them to water with greater precision and to measure their water use more accurately. They have included a new central computer and weather station to calculate how much water the grass has used and how much it still needs—the grass receives the exact amount of water to survive, no more and no less. Installing over 30% additional, and more sophisticated, sprinkler heads has enabled them to make pinpoint adjustments to over two thousand heads. For example, they can run one sprinkler head for six minutes and the one right next to it for four minutes. These improvements in uniform coverage have made a tremendous difference and they now need to water only every other night. When making watering decisions, the maintenance staff does more than a visual inspection to determine if the grass needs to be watered. To make sound irrigation choices, they measure soil moisture levels daily with advanced technology, like portable moisture meters. These meters allow them to measure moisture with a push of a button, putting the information they need right at their fingertips. The data gathered with moisture meters is used to make real-time watering decisions to help conserve water. The most common water conservation practice is one you may have never heard of—the use of soil wetting agents. Wetting agents are like soapy products that reduce the surface tension of the water. Surface tension in water causes it to bead up rather than absorb into the soil surrounding the roots. By reducing this tension, water is more uniformly distributed to the grass roots. Research suggests wetting agents may improve water retention in the soil during dry conditions and water infiltration during wet conditions. Multiple case studies reveal that using wetting agents can result in a 20% or more water savings. Water is the most valued resource in this valley and conserving it will always be a mission of The Valley Club. They look forward to continuing to learn about new methods and technology that will help them prioritize the environment, while also providing an extraordinary golf course for years to come. F

hey say you find love when you least expect it. For Devin and Jennefer, “They” were right. The two met as each was approaching a transition in their life: Devin, preparing to move to the west coast seeking new opportunity in his career; Jennefer, finishing the last quarter of her graduate program before moving home to begin her own career. So when they met in the summer of 2015, neither was looking for romance…until sparks flew. Settling together in San Francisco, Devin and Jennefer enjoyed trips to Sun Valley where Jennefer’s parents owned a home. They adored every moment there – a beautiful place for respite and recharging. Sun Valley became even more special when Devin proposed to Jennefer on another trip together. They knew then it was destined to be where they would get married. The couple dreamed of a winter wedding in March, but as for so many others, the pandemic had other plans. After a few hurdles, safety protocols, and immense support from family, Amanda Seaward (their wedding planner), and their wedding vendors, their dream wedding became a reality in September. Devin and Jennefer couldn’t have dreamt it more perfectly. A warm fall day, just as the leaves began to turn
color. Views from The Valley Club glowed green and yellow against the bright blue sky. The flowers and decor complemented the natural beauty perfectly, adding elegance with calla lilies and gladiolus. Friends and family flew from near and far to join, showing their love through bright spirit and energy on and off the dance floor. To this day, each time Devin and Jennefer think about their wedding, they pinch themselves – it will forever glow warm and bright in their hearts. F

CARLE Y & E VERET T
fter a 355 day delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was the eve of our wedding day. The sky was a deep dark black due to the mixture of smoke from the summer’s wildfires and an afternoon storm. Carley and I looked out the window trying to find Baldy in the haze, but unable. We smiled, laughed, and shrugged our shoulders. After the chaotic last few years, we were just happy to finally have our wedding. And not only that, but our dream wedding at Galena Lodge with all of our friends and family. The following morning we got out of bed and looked out the window, once again in awe. The birds were chirping, the morning dew was steaming from the bright morning sun, and the sky was a vast sea of blue with a few puffy clouds slowly putzing across the sky. We looked at each other and smiled again…we’re getting married today! And the day only got better from there. Later that afternoon, an osprey soared overhead keeping an eye on our ceremony as a stream trickled through the mountain meadow where we said “I do.” The speeches, the food, the flowers, the hugs, the toasts, the dancing (especially the dancing)…everything was magical and perfect. After the band had packed up and our guests began lining up to cheer us on to the bus back to Ketchum, we found ourselves alone together for the first time as a married couple. Standing there in the cool evening mountain breeze with the lights from our wedding tent twinkling behind us, we held each other underneath Galena Peak – a mountain of love. We looked at each other, smiled, laughed, shrugged our shoulders and started walking hand in hand into our new life. F

Boosting Mental Health E
By Julie Johnson, NTP
veryone is empowered to make food choices throughout the day. You can change the state of your physical and mental health with the foods you put in your mouth. And as it turns out, nutrition and mental health are more closely connected than you might expect. One of the top strategies for boosting mental health is also one of the most often ignored: FOOD. Recent studies show that food can be an incredible ally when it comes to mental health. It makes sense. The brain needs specific nutrients to thrive, just like every organ, and certain nutrients turn out to be more critical to mental health than you may have ever imagined. A large number of epidemiological studies have suggested a relationship between diet and mental illness. Plus, a growing body of research shows an association between poor nutrition and common mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety. It’s becoming ever clearer that your diet can affect your mood, your ability to learn, and your capacity to remember what you’ve learned. This is true not only in early stages of brain development, but throughout your entire life. As we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic – and now global disruption of nearly everything – many of us have been experiencing another health challenge: an assault on our mental health. Anxiety is high, and many people are still knocked off their normal routines and not socializing as before. Plus, many of us face a loss of control, financial stress, increased social isolation, or even the specter of too much time with family members or roommates, who may be easier to get along with

when we have more breathing room. (Of course, I’m talking about them, not you. You’re always reasonable and eventempered.) Nutritional psychiatry, a relatively new medical subspecialty, emphasizes the link between nutrition and mental health. It’s typically used alongside behavioral and lifestyle interventions, talk therapy, and sometimes also medications, to make the most positive, sustainable impact. HERE IS HOW NUTRITION WORKS IN YOUR BRAIN. Your brain runs on glucose and needs quite a lot of it. In fact, while your brain makes up about 2% of your body weight, it uses between 20-25% of all the oxygen you inhale and calories you burn. But that doesn’t mean you can just breathe air and eat sugar and have your brain function at its best! When it comes to addressing mental health, it’s important to examine “your brain on food.” It turns out that the adage “you are what you eat” extends to your mental and emotional experience – not just your physical body. BECOME AN EXPERIMENT You are the scientist and the subject matter. Use your powers of observation and mindfulness on yourself. How does processed food feel after an hour, four hours or the next day compared to a full day of whole unadulterated foods? Patients suffering from mental disorders often exhibit a severe deficiency of important vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Fiber creates short chain fatty acids. Gut microbiome needs fuel to restore, repair and balance in the gut with these short chain fatty acids that carry nutrition to the brain. A diversity of fibrous whole plants, legumes, beans, vegetables, nuts, seeds, mushrooms, fermented vegetables, whole grains, unsprayed fruits, leafy greens and sprouts, specifically broccoli sprouts – think sulforaphanes – your brain thrives. FUN FOODS TO ADD FOR BOOSTING MENTAL HEALTH GREEN TEA is rich in compounds that appear to reduce anxiety, improve memory and attention and boost brain function. L-Theanine and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), have been studied for their positive effects on mood. DARK CHOCOLATE (cocoa) contains serotonin, dopamine, and phenylethylamine – the feel good chemicals called endorphins with anti-depressant properties. Milk chocolate may be self defeating with all the sugar and added preservatives. (No sugary candy bars!) B VITAMINS, such as B6, B12, and B9 (folate), are especially important when it comes to anxiety and depression. They help produce and control brain chemicals and influence mood
and other mental functions. (Salmon, oysters, clams, mussels, eggs, grass-fed beef, leafy greens, sprouts) VITAMIN D3 plays a critical role in optimal brain development and is a key ingredient in the production of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is associated with motivation. (Mushrooms, wild caught fish, egg yolk, liver) IRON is necessary for the nerves and brain. Iron deficiency can sometimes present as anxiety, depression, irritability, and even poor concentration and general restlessness. (Beans, lentils, tofu, grass fed meats, spinach) CHROMIUM can regulate unbalanced, key neurotransmitters in mental health disorders. There is a well-established link between chromium deficiency and depression. (Grape juice, whole wheat, brewers yeast) LITHIUM is a natural trace element that has a well-known role in psychiatry, especially in the treatment of bipolar disorder, as well as depression, schizoaffective disorder, aggression, impulse control disorder, attention deficit dis-
Food doesn’t just shape your physical body. It also shapes your emotions, mental clarity and how you feel about and respond to life. orders, and eating disorders. (Nutmeg, coriander seeds, potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage) SELENIUM may improve mood and diminish anxiety. (Brazil nuts, eggs, grass fed turkey, chicken, pork, raw dairy) ZINC taken by mouth can improve the effectiveness of antidepressant therapy. It is also critical for immune health. (Oyster, whole grains, chickpeas, cashews, almonds, grass fed meats) AMINO ACIDS are the building blocks of protein. Deficiencies in neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline, and y-
aminobutyric acid (GABA), are often associated with depression. You can supplement with 5-HTP and L-Tyrosine. (Complete amino acids are found in grass fed animal products, clean dairy, eggs, quinoa and buckwheat but we can get many from nuts, seeds, beans and some grains.) Always choose foods in their whole and original state. Choose organic when possible. Chemicals interrupt brain function. While it’s generally preferable to get the nutrients you need from the food you eat every day, you may need to supplement with vitamins and minerals. Need more help stabilizing your gut microbiome? Try prebiotic supplements to enhance short chain fatty acid production. Food doesn’t just shape your physical body. It also shapes your emotions, mental clarity and how you feel about and respond to life. Choose healthy whole foods, it is less expensive, tastes great and you will be so much more fun to be around. SUN VALLEY SOURCE
We’re Healing Idaho — One Child and Family at a Time For 39 years Camp Rainbow Gold has been providing support, love, and magic to Idaho families grappling with pediatric cancer. We could have filled books with adventures and experiences. But today, we’re in the midst of writing our most transformative chapter. On 172 acres in the hills outside Fairfield, we are building Hidden Paradise—Idaho’s only medically designed, accessible, adaptive camp—to serve not only our cancer camps, but other programs, retreats, and camps from nonprofit organizations in the state.

Our favorite saying is “treasures come out of trials” and during the pandemic, we got creative and remodeled many of the 26 onsite buildings at the old former golf course “resort.” This set us up for 2022, to not only hold all five of our camps in person (youth oncology, teen oncology, siblings, and two family camps), but to welcome four other non-profit camps to Hidden Paradise – two years ahead of schedule!
We’ve already raised more than $9.5 million of our total $15.5 million goal. What’s next? Infrastructure. Power, water, septic, pathways, and roads.
Plus — Blue Cross of Idaho has donated an onsite health center. Blackrock Homes has donated the supplies, labor, and building of 12 new, ADA cabins and 2 shower houses. Muffy Ritz, the Larson Fund, the Marilyn Rivera Memorial Fund, and Spur Community Foundation have helped us install 3 mountain bike trails (2 are accessible).
Hidden Paradise was built in the late ‘70s and we need help bringing it back to life, and building the necessary, up-to-date foundation to support all the donated buildings and future construction. We also need a new lodge/dining hall as a safe place to gather everyone inside during a weather event or other emergency. While there’s a lot of healing already taking place at Hidden Paradise, there’s still a lot of work to do. For more information or to get involved, visit www.HealingIdaho.org or call us at 208-350-6435.
LET’S BUILD TOGETHER
Paula Shaffer, longtime Camp Rainbow Gold supporter through her Sun Valley business Valley Apothecary with co-owner Cathy Swink —now first-time camper at Spring Family Camp, with her son, Huntley and cancer warrior daughter, Luella.
Your support will make Hidden Paradise accessible to thousands of campers desperate for a safe, nurturing, carefree camp. Will you help us Heal Idaho?
