he beautiful spring and the anticipated incredible summer have Wood River Valley residents excited to share their outdoor spaces again. Arianne Heyser, co-owner of Ketchum’s Topnotch Fine Furnishings and Design, and her team are thrilled with the new outdoor furniture options available this season. “We’re preparing for an amazing outdoor furniture season. Customers typically don’t ask about furniture for their outdoor spaces until late May or early June, and we’ve already had customers inquire about availability and what’s new.” The store is filled with dining room settings for all sizes of gatherings, plus lots of comfortable outdoor seating, such as sectionals, sofas and recliners. Throw a beautiful rug – that you can even spray off with a hose – to highlight your gathering place and you are set to start adding unique pieces that highlight your personal style. Topnotch has new unique pieces from free form bench-

es to bright colored Adirondack chairs made from recycled plastic. The new selections of woven pillows and throw blankets are versatile to be used both inside the home and outdoor on the patio. Heyser explained how fantastic the new fabrics are, “You’d never know they’re made to be outside. They’re amazing if you have a young family, you can use them inside or outside and know that the pillows and blankets are washable.” The store is filled with wooden trays and bowls, succulents, decorative balls and candles that can be incorporated to make your presentation a success. This past year taught us that sometimes life is best lived by focusing one day at a time. Consider brightening up your home, one room at a time. Think about adding simple updates in your home that will bring you joy. For instance, take a look at your bedroom and consider incorporating fresh new bedding, lighter or vintage fabrics or add a textured pillow to bring a smile every time you enter the room. Integrate the inspiration from all around you. Heyser is continually inspired by the beauty of the mountains we

live in. “It’s all about bringing the outdoor beauty into our spaces to enjoy it.” Topnotch has furniture pieces that will satisfy a variety of styles. Simply by incorporating organic pieces inside our homes, such as stone bowls and teak root tables, reminds us of things that we enjoy outside, “By bringing it inside, we can connect and appreciate the beauty of nature.” A special service that Topnotch offers to their customers is the option to take items out of the store “on approval”. Once the larger pieces are selected, accent pieces such as lamps, accessories, art and accents can be delivered to the customer’s home. One of the designers will then work with the customer to arrange the items. The customer can live with the items for 24 hours and then make a decision about which they want to keep. “An integral part of this process is to see an entire design concept come together. It’s such a visual process for most people. It’s not the same experience to look online or at a picture. Our feedback from customers is that they find it very helpful when they can see the items arranged in their home.” As the weather warms, Heyser is looking forward to receiving new pieces for the showroom and adjusting her

home to reflect the change in season. In her free-time, like many of us, Heyser is looking forward to many hikes, going to the lake, backyard barbecues and gathering with loved ones. “I think people are excited to hang out with friends and loved ones again. Adding little changes and new items in the interior/exterior spaces of their home, gives the gathering areas a fresh and welcome energy.” F SUN VALLEY SOURCE

Gravel Less

TRAVELED By Jim Santa

Since the beginning of COVID, the bicycle industry has been experiencing unprecedented growth and one of the fastest growing trends in the cycling world is gravel riding or “gravel grinding.”

W

hile riding bicycles on gravel roads is far from anything revolutionary, we’ve been doing this since the bicycle was invented, the gear we are using is much more suited to it these days. Literally all the big bicycle manufacturers have “gravel” or “x-road” bikes now and the entire industry acknowledges this as a growth category. Gravel rides and races are popping up all over the country and are quickly becoming some of the most well attended events in cycling. REBECCA’S PRIVATE IDAHO We are fortunate to have one of the premier Gravel events in the country right here in our backyard, Rebecca’s Private Idaho. With RPI in its 9th season there are now 3 ways to participate. After a cancellation of the traditional Sun Valley event last season due to COVID, it’s back on for Labor Day weekend with the 3-day Queen’s Stage Race and 3 different distances for the 1-day Sunday event. Regardless of the distance you choose, RPI offers up some of the most beautiful and challenging gravel terrain anywhere in the country! One can also participate remotely with RPI Basecamp, an 8-week customized training program, or RPI Remote where you ride your own course wherever you are. Visit the RPI website www.rebeccasprivateidaho.com for more details. So just what makes riding a gravel bike different? From a distance the average gravel bike doesn’t look a whole lot different than the Schwinn Varsity 10-speed many of us rode to class and around campus, or in my case gravel roads and forest trails as well. But let’s take a closer look. The first thing to note is that the tires are generally wider and possess more aggressive tread patterns than what we’re used to seeing on traditional drop bar road bikes. And here’s one of the biggest

22

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

fundamental differences between gravel and traditional road bikes. True road bikes will generally accommodate up to 28 or 30c tires on a 700c wheel, with 25c being the most common width. Most gravel bike frames and forks have been adapted to accept much bigger tires up to 45 or 47c on a 700c wheel and often including the option of a 650b or 27.5˝ wheel accommodating up to a 2.1˝ tire, closing in on what would be mountain bike tire and wheel standards. Many riders will have a second, or even third, set of wheels for their bike so they can easily adapt the bike to whatever conditions present. Others, like myself, will try to hit the middle ground with one set of wheels to do it all. This middle ground sweet spot will generally be a 38 or 40c tire on a 700c wheelset. This set up is fast enough on pavement, excellent on most gravel, and is plenty adequate on mellow single track trails. I’d like to suggest that the key to enjoying riding gravel lies in the wheel and tire set up. Go wider, go tubeless, drop the pressure, and if your budget allows, add a nice set of carbon rims. Upgrading wheels is generally money well spent and the most effective upgrade on almost any bike. And what about drop bars, aren’t they just for roadies and racing? While there are some gravel models offered with flat bars, drop bars can be infinitely more comfortable over the long haul as they allow for a number of different hand positions greatly reducing fatigue. Many of the drop bars for gravel are also a bit wider or have a flare offering more control on technical descents. Another notable difference is that most, if not all, gravel bikes will come standard with disc brakes. While virtually all mountain bikes adopted disc brakes some time ago we are seeing a mix of disc and rim brakes on traditional road bikes. Disc brakes provide much more efficient and powerful braking especially in mountainous terrain and in wet and muddy conditions. The reason all road bikes do not come with disc brakes is simply a weight factor. Road racers will generally choose a bike with disc brakes for mountain stages and traditional rim brakes, which are lighter, on flatter stages where braking is not as demanding. But enough about the bikes, let’s talk about the ride! For me, the gravel bike has become my favorite go to bike to ride. This is primarily because this bike is fun

“Gravel rides and races are popping up all over the country and are quickly becoming some of the most well attended events in cycling.” — Jim Santa

to ride no matter the terrain. It’s plenty fast on the pavement, ideal for gravel roads, and a blast on mellow singletrack. I can jump on this bike after work and easily throw together a “mixed surface” loop from my driveway that encompasses all of the previously mentioned terrain. I don’t have to load my bike up and go to a trailhead, and I don’t have to turn around when the pavement turns to gravel. And depending upon the route and terrain, the ride often combines both aspects of road and mountain biking skills. Living here in Central Idaho, and in most of the rural west, the potential routes are endless and mostly void of motor vehicles. Here in the Wood River Valley we now even have our own gravel map with a variety of suggested routes. Many of the gravel bikes available today are also equipped to take on extra baggage should bikepacking or overnighters be of interest, (think Idaho Hot Springs tour). And with the growth of ebikes, we are now seeing quite a few gravel models hitting the market should you desire a bit of assistance. The gravel, or all-road bike, also makes for a great travel companion as you can easily put together a fun ride wherever your travels may lead you. So whether you’re looking for the ultimate go everywhere ride or simply one to add to your current bike quiver, don’t overlook the option of a gravel model. Stop by Sturtevants – voted the Valley’s Best Bike Shop – for all of your cycling needs. Enjoy the ride and keep the rubber side down! F

Gateway to Adventure EXPLOREWith offers one-stop option for outdoor enthusiasts By Bryant Dunn

A

fter more than a year of lockdowns and travel restrictions, the freedom to travel and explore the great outdoors has finally returned. This summer, tens of thousands of visitors will vacation in the Sun Valley area and experience the mountainous magic that the Wood River Valley and the Northern Rockies have to offer. Mountain bikers, hikers and backpackers will traverse local peaks and valleys on one of America’s most diverse and comprehensive series of single-track trails. Climbers and mountaineers will summit surrounding mountaintops. Anglers will cast along the banks of more than a hundred miles of local rivers and the hundreds of alpine lakes that are endemic to the Sun Valley area. Kids on summer vacation will explore the surrounding ecosystems in diverse and adventurous day camps. Whitewater enthusiasts will raft the endless rapids of central Idaho and ATV and side-by-side recreationists will motor their way through the surrounding countryside. Traditionally in Sun Valley, as in most mountain towns throughout the Rockies, outdoor recreation is up to the visitor to discover and experience. Local outfitters and guides who offer these services professionally are a resource many visitors take advantage of to make the most of their limited time and to enjoy a highly professional outdoor experience. However, identifying the right outfitter – or outfitters if multiple and various services are desired – can take treasured time away from a visit and ultimately lead to more questions than answers. With this in mind, EXPLOREWith, an outdoor experience provider which represents essentially all outdoor outfitted services through partnerships with Sun Valley area outfitting busi-

©2021

nesses, has launched its new headquarters in the Sun Valley mall. EXPLOREWith is the culmination of its partners’ vision to provide a single venue for visiting guests and locals alike to book any and all outdoor recreation in one location, whether in EXPLOREWith headquarters or online and at no additional cost to visiting guests. “We’re excited about the fantastic range of Sun Valley’s guided activities to be found under one roof at EXPLOREWith headquarters and online at explorewith.com,” co-founder, Erik Weiseth, shared. “Now the consumer can find, book and go!” This comprehensive and creative mission to create recreation itineraries through one venue is perfectly reflected by the interior design of EXLOREWith headquarters. In fact, modeled after many of the services it offers, the retail space in the Sun Valley mall is designed in the impression of a yurt or circular Mongolian wall tent. Cooper Cox, co-founder of EXPLOREWith and Otherwild Adventures and a store designer for Nike and Hermes, is behind the visionary design. EXPLOREWith is worth a visit to admire the layout even if visitors have already finalized their outdoor plans. A selection of outdoor brands are also featured, presenting the opportunity to be outfitted and geared up all in one visit. Surely, in a time when we are returning to wild places en masse and the options for outdoor experiences have never been more numerous, the simplicity of the EXPLOREWith booking system and the variety of adventures that it offers launches at the perfect time and in the perfect Rocky Mountain destination. hile the history of sheepherding in the area is long, the loss of farms and ranches and the growth of the West, and Idaho in particular, led to a need to preserve the rich stories, history, and heritage of sheepherding in Idaho. Thus, the Trailing of the Sheep Festival was born, a fiveday event including multicultural performers, storytelling, culinary events and cooking classes, a Wool Festival, and Championship Sheepdog Trials, all culminating in the Big Sheep Parade when 1,500 sheep trail down Main Street in Ketchum. Given accolades by National Geographic, msn.com, USA Today, and more, the Trailing of the Sheep Festival is a unique opportunity to be immersed in the cultural heritage of our area. Taking place October 6-10, this year’s Trailing of the Sheep Festival will have new and exciting events and an air of celebration as the event’s 25th

anniversary takes place after last year’s hiatus (though the sheep still trailed!). “We are excited to be back,” said Trailing of the Sheep Festival Executive Director Laura Musbach Drake. “Like so many, we were sad to take a hiatus last year, but we are feeling enthusiasm from patrons, volunteers, and Folk Life Fair vendors. We are hoping for a wonderful Festival – the best ever – and we are feeling great excitement from all of our audiences to participate and be a part of it this year.” THE GOOD SHEPHERD MONUMENT Currently in the works to be unveiled at this year’s Festival is The Good Shepherd Monument, a sculpture by Danny D. Edwards of Danny Edwards Bronzes that will feature eight life-size bronze sheep, a sheepherder, horse, and dog on the landscape strip at Roberta McKercher Park in Hailey. The sculpture will serve as a permanent legacy to the sheep industry, ranchers, herders, and their 150+ years of history in the Wood River Valley. “It is a unique gift from the Trailing of the Sheep Festival to the industry and to the Wood River Valley community and beyond,” said Drake. “We think it is a wonderful tribute to the history and culture of our region that we celebrate through our Festival each year.” Adjacent to the monument will be commemorative engraved pavers from monument donors. In addition to some smaller changes to this year’s Fes-

tival – another day added to the sheep dog trials and the perspective of bloggers attending in partnership with the American Lamb Board – some of the biggest draws will be entertainment. Friday night’s Sheep Tales Gathering at the Argyros – an annual event that features stories from the perspective of understanding history, culture, and stories of sheep herding and sheep ranching in Idaho and the West – will feature celebrated author and essayist Gretel Ehrlich sharing her stories of living on a ranch in rural Wyoming. There will also be a Special Performance Saturday night at the Argyros titled: Peruvian Ballet Folklorica to be performed by the Utah Hispanic Dance Alliance and Chaskis Peruvian Musicians. GOODBYE, CITY LIFE. Mountain living is the life for me! By Kristin Hovencamp

Ask a New Yorker to identify the center of the universe, and invariably they will say, “New York City.”

P

eople live in or about urban areas for many reasons: career, education, family, entertainment. Pre-pandemic, the risk of relocating for a better lifestyle without jeopardizing your career was believed to be untenable. Sorry, New York. Our way of thinking has shifted. If the past year has taught us anything, you cannot put a price on personal and family time. If you could reside anywhere, where would it be? According to the 2020 U.S. Census Bureau, Idaho had the most significant single-year population increase, growing 2.1% to 1.8 million residents. No surprise to anyone who has spent time in Idaho.

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

A HIGH DESERT OASIS. In the fall of 2019, I shared that after 25 years, I was abandoning NYC for Sun Valley, Idaho. The responses were nothing short of, “Have you gone mad?” “Leave Wall Street for Main Street?” “What are you thinking?” Simply put, I was done with the rat race. Why must I forever escape New York to find my oasis when I can live in one? For me, the draws to the mountains are the year-round activities, peaceful lifestyle, and seemingly never-ending dark sky. After my parents retired to Sun Valley, I experienced first-hand what quality of life truly meant. I found I could have the best of both worlds in Sun Valley, my family, and my career. TRADING THE BRIGHT LIGHTS OF MANHATTAN FOR THE DARK SKY OF THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY. Migrating to a mountain town may sound shocking, but it is a

“what is holding me back from having my cake and eating it too?” With a map in hand, “we set off on a cross-country road trip to investigate ski towns. When we pulled into Ketchum, Idaho, we hit paydirt. Given the baron real estate market in mountain resorts, our timing was impeccable.” By late summer, Denise was living and working in her own slice of paradise, with views of Bald Mountain. PUTTING FAMILY FIRST HAS BECOME A TREND. Families who migrate to mountain towns offer various reasons why, and the common thread is quality of life. Bill Morrison’s dream was to raise his family in Sun Valley, but he never thought his career would allow such a life. The shift to remote work necessitated by the COVID lockdown opened a window of opportunity to make the move. Bill found that he could still contribute at the same level without risking his career or sacrificing family time. “I have reduced my old San Francisco commute from 30 minutes to 3 minutes and eliminated the 10-hour drive to spend weekends skiing in Squaw Valley. As a father of an eight and elevenyear-old, I love seeing my children flourishing in their new school and spending their free time outdoors. Living in Sun Valley is a dream come true.”

@i.r.william William Rambo

risk worth taking. Just ask Denise Shull. As a young woman, Denise fell in love with Aspen, Colorado, and dreamt of living there one day. She even chose to be married on top of Ajax Mountain. Raised in Ohio, Denise eventually made Manhattan home. With a full life and flourishing career, she never really thought she could leave the city. Fast forward to summer 2020, and Denise found herself wondering,

ONE BIG STEP ON OUR WAY TO HEAVEN. Jim and Tedde Reid spent most of their business life in Chicago, their ministry life in Africa, and counted on vacations to Stanley, Idaho, to enjoy the mountains, rivers, and sheer beauty. “When we began to think about retiring, we looked all over the area and found our perfect home in Sun Valley,” shares Tedde. “The spectacular blue skies and panoramic mountain views are indescribable. An array of activities, friendly people, and wild animals wandering into our yard convinced us we were home.” THE WONDERS OF NATURE. It is no coincidence that mountain towns attract individuals who value community. Mountain living has it all. Blue skies as far as the eyes can see and endless starry nights. No matter what stage you are at in the journey of life, a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle can be realized at high elevation. Alas, you will still face traffic jams – of elk and sheep. F

The Golden Hour IN SUN VALLEY By Katie Vaughn

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

KATIE AND BRADLEY

F

rom the moment Bradley proposed, we started dreaming about what our wedding day would look like. We immediately envisioned open space, that golden sunset glow, and our families all around us. We are two California kids at heart, but there was a special tie to Idaho that we wanted to explore. Bradley and I visit my parents in Idaho as often as we can and there is something about the stillness in their backyard that keeps drawing us in. It was my husband’s idea to have the wedding on their property and my heart quickly fluttered with excitement as I envisioned all the people we love most, getting to experience that magical sunset hour in the Idaho valley. We were connected with Esther Williams, at For Such a Time Events, and she took our dream and made it into a reality. She was the perfect fit, making us feel as if we’d known her for years. Each of the vendors that Esther connected us with felt like family and completely exceeded our expectations. We said our vows in the middle of the field, then danced the night away under a tent with wildflowers as our center pieces, and food that still has people talking. Our guests sipped cocktails as the golden light illuminated the mountains and they were able to experience the original feeling we were drawn to. It truly was a blessed day. We were surrounded by love and while everyone felt grateful to be a part of the experience, it was Bradley and I who left feeling like we were the most fortunate couple in the world. Idaho will forever hold a special place in our hearts and we will reminisce for years to come each time we are visiting. F

Our Magical Wedding CHANEL AND HENRY By Amanda Adreani

I

n the summer of 2011, college students Chanel Wyett and Henry Pyle met in Orange County. On August 16, 2019, the couple were married here in Sun Valley. Both from Southern California, “my husband’s family had been going to Sun Valley since he was a little kid and they have a house there,” Chanel explains. “Ever since we started dating, that was the place we went to for vacation or holidays so it became our second home. It made perfect sense to get married there.” The wedding was very curated, and specific to Chanel and Henry. “The whole day felt incredibly thoughtful, from the speeches, to all our loved ones

58

who shared the day with us. It was very family and friend oriented.” Best friend, Seany officiated the ceremony, and Chanel’s brother read the same poem that was read at their grandmother’s funeral, as a way to make her a part of the ceremony. “The ceremony was magical, but it went by so fast. It was sweet and emotional. I just remember being completely overwhelmed with joy.” The reception kicked things up a notch. A friend of the couple, a DJ, flew in to provide the perfect house music vibes. As soon as the lights went down, the dance floor was packed. “It felt youthful and energetic.” The guests got to enjoy the sights of Sun Valley. Some of their friends had visited with them over the years, but some were there for the first time. “They thought it was so beautiful, and that the town was charming. Everyone we talked to said, ‘we’ll be back.’” Wyett was a “mellow bride” and she enjoyed the planning process. “I really trusted my wedding planner, Amanda [Seaward]. She was amazing to work with and super well-connected in town. We hit it off right away.” Chanel was actually connected to Amanda through Henry’s step-grandma, and Amanda also connected Chanel to Tara Bella Flowers. Thanks to Amanda’s expertise, the wedding day went smoothly. By the time the ceremony was over, Chanel and Henry were ready to get the night going at the reception. The only stressful moment of the day was preparing for the “First Look” photos. After getting ready, Chanel finally put on her lengthy and elegant veil, only to realize that it was much heavier than expected. “My bun wouldn’t hold my veil. It kept falling down as we were rushing out the door.” She was a few minutes late to meet her groom for the photos, but all was well. “The second I saw Henry, all of that stress melted away.” F

Healthy Relationships By Julie Johnson, NTP

For good health we need to regain positive relational well-being to ourselves and others.

O

ur relations were deprived by this last year’s isolation and political polarization. This division, fear, and mistrust has isolated us from family relations, friend groups and even our interpersonal space. Some of us seem to have lost the ability to make eye contact and connect with others. Our recovery requires us to de-mask and smile at each other again. What we want for sexy, healthy relationships is to be around positive nurturing people and that starts with oneself. Can you look in the mirror, smile and say “I love you”? If you have trouble with this self declaration, here are some changes you can make.

TREAT YOURSELF LIKE THE GARDEN YOU WANT TO BE Clean up your environment of plastics and harsh chemicals. The bisphenol in plastics (BPA) disrupts our fragile hormones and damages our gut microbiome. They mimic our real hormones and glom on to our hormone receptors throughout our bodies. This causes our moods to swing and alters our weight. You wouldn’t put these chemicals and solvents in your garden and expect good results. The same holds true for you. LET’S TALK DIRTY To look beautiful and sexy is to feel beautiful on the inside. It is the same when making a garden. You need to have good beginnings. Nutrient poor

hard packed soil laden with NPK fertilizer and weed killer will never make a healthy plant. The same holds true for your body. You want to start with nutrient rich dirt full of healthy microbiomes. The richer the soil the more beautiful the plant. The more attracted you are to that plant. When you have digestive problems you do not feel sexy and healthy. You do not feel relational to yourself or others. The healthier your insides the easier it is to glow on the outside. Eat fresh produce sprayed with the least amount of chemicals. For healthy prebiotic fibers eat artichokes, asparagus, apples and chicory. For healthy probiotics, drink kombucha and kefir. Eat sauerkraut and yogurt. If you don’t like those foods, take a daily probiotic. To be sexy, healthy, think – less is better. Your skin is your largest organ. Interstitial fluid of the lymph sits just under the surface of your skin. While this fluid moves at a languid pace, hormone mimicking chemicals can still easily reach your hormone producing glands. Use chemical free sunscreens. MANAGE YOUR STRESS Whether you are growing cucumbers or sunflowers, tending your garden

is stress relieving. Gardening is not only moderate exercise it is contemplative and rewarding. You see the fruits of your labor and so do others. It is hard not to smile when you stand back and look at your garden. Take off your mask, look into the mirror and smile. Your garden is about to bloom. For a quick garden, grow herbs such as the healing aromatic rosemary with respiratory, antiviral, memory boosting and stress lowering abilities. Grow this and others like oregano and basil on your windowsill. Watch the magic of a new life happen. F

You can find our menu and long list of gardeners, farmers and ranchers at www.jjnourishme.com. Go to www.localfoodalliance.org to see all surrounding farmers. Get the LFA guide book to local food outlets as well as the gardeners, farmers and ranchers that service our area. NourishMe is also proud to be a member of FARE, a fairly new 501(c)(6) organization based in Boise, which aims to create a more equitable future for Idaho’s independent food and beverage providers. Day Trip to Stanley

Photo: James Bourret

SNRA (Visitor Center)

Begin with a stop at the SNRA Visitor Center, about 8 miles north of Ketchum. The center is a great source of information with maps, flyers, and free audiotape tours. Further up is Galena Lodge, the starting point of hiking, biking, and cross-country trails, considered one of the best public trail systems in North America. Back on the road, you will begin the ascent to Galena Summit.

GALENA SUMMIT

Even locals can’t help but smile at the gorgeous view just over the top of Galena Summit. This is a must-stop for a view of the entire region including four mountain ranges, the small, curling creek of the Salmon headwaters, and high-altitude ranch lands that trace the river north.

ALTURAS & PETIT LAKES

Upon reaching the valley floor, pass the Smiley Creek Lodge and look for signs to Alturas and Petit lakes. This pristine string of glacial lakes hugs the mountains along the southwest side of the valley, offering a selection of day-use picnic areas, campgrounds, fishing streams, hiking trailheads, and boat ramps for enjoying the splendors of the Sawtooth Mountains. Alturas and Petit Lakes can be reached by car. For peaceful wilderness hiking set your sights on Alice, Toxaway, or Hell Roaring Lake. Dozens of well-marked and maintained trails are located all along Idaho Highway 75. Check your SNRA map to locate trailheads and other points of interest.

96

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

SMILEY CREEK LODGE

Smiley Creek is a beautiful spot on the Headwaters of the Salmon River. Stop by Smiley Creek Lodge and enjoy a burger. For road and trail conditions, it’s a good idea to make local inquiries at Smiley Creek, or the Stanley Ranger Station.

FISH HATCHERY

The Sawtooth Fish Hatchery is a fun stop for anyone interested in fish and wildlife. The viewing room provides opportunities to view steelhead trout from March to May and Chinook salmon throughout the year. The visitors’ center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. most days.

RANGER STATION

The Stanley Ranger Station, on a paved road to the west of Idaho Highway 75, is worth a stop, both for the information you can gather and for the view, particularly of Thompson Peak, the highest peak in the Sawtooths. If you borrowed one of the free audiotapes at the SNRA headquarters, this is the place to return it.

REDFISH LAKE

The queen of the lakes that lie along the base of the Sawtooths is Redfish Lake. At 4 miles long, it is the largest of the lakes and has the most developed facilities, including a Visitors’ Center, Redfish Lake Lodge, several campgrounds, a marina, horse corrals, a picnic area, and parking for the many hiking trails that start in the vicinity. The lodge has a store and café, as well as guest rooms and cabins. Redfish Lake is an extremely popular camping destination during the summer season, so reservations are advisable if you are interested in staying overnight.
