RETAIL THERAPY By Deborah Burns

O

Alive and well in Sun Valley

ne of my favorite pleasures in life has been boutique shopping. I spent the better half of my life owning and operating a women’s clothing shop which was my pride and joy. I scurried each morning to prepare, clean and arrange my beautiful wares in anticipation of the “OPEN SIGN.” With pride and expectancy – that customers would appreciate and buy the selections I purchased for them – I opened my “living room full of clothes.” There was always a risk that what I selected would either sell or not. At the end of the day I counted my dollars to see if my expectations came true. Here in Sun Valley the tourists and clients come and go. A retail boutique owner deals with cash that ebbs and flows. I had to have patience and perseverance to go through the seasonal lows and be very grateful for the seasonal highs. COVID-19 put the closed sign on our shops for many weeks as our inventory sat lonely and without customers and cash flow. Our inventory changed seasons as we were left in shock, staying home to be safe and healthy as our bank accounts dwindled. The apparel and gift sector of business is a “touchy feely” experience. Touching products and trying on clothes is an intimate experience. Spending time talking to the shop owners and other clients is all a part of that “Retail Therapy.” It is social. It is a getaway. You leave your home and step into a world of your own, to spend dollars on items that make you feel good.

12

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

We now live in a “Brave New World” and we are asking ourselves. “How do we come back to our open signs, and how do we do business?” If the intimacy is removed from shopping, how do we, as shop owners connect? Think of reaching out to the shopper family you have known for a very long time. Remember their style or their favorite lines and products. Email them, call them, and invite them back with open arms to a different, safer place that you will offer when they come to visit you. We are open for business and customers. Each individual store owner has their own way of keeping themselves and their clients healthy and safe. They are trying their best to “BE KIND” and loving to you and to themselves while following protocol to be safe from the hidden enemy that is here to stay for a while. It is asking us to connect even more with each other in a new way. Asking us to be more intimate in our approach to one another and asking us to be clearer about your needs, and speaking more truthfully about our own. This is the brand new relationship we are being asked to discover, with “eyes wide open.” Please come out in town and do some “Retail Therapy” with us. Although different in its approach, we are still the same. Humankind resorts to love even when we cannot touch or be close. It is the love that we have for each other that binds us all together as one. F

Beautiful Work Spaces By Judy Stoltzfus

The Wood River Valley is filled with creative entrepreneurs. Having a space that provides inspiration and a sense of place is what brings joy to one’s daily work hours. Topnotch Fine Furnishings and Barry Peterson Jewelers in Ketchum are two showrooms that par ticularly offer that ar t gallery feel which draws visitors in and gives the urge to linger, study and admire not only the items for sale, but the surrounding space, lighting and beauty. 18

A

s one walks into the Topnotch showroom, it becomes evident that you are in the space of designers who love their work. There are three floors to enjoy; the rooms are stylishly filled and the space is compartmentalized. Let’s say you were interested in furnishing your living room. You could walk into a living room area with furniture in the perfect combination, which owners, Arianne and Josh Heyser and their team of designers have carefully chosen. Heyser lights up as she describes what is most important to her when designing a space. She calls it a “living style.” Heyser explains that the goal is to “make it pretty, but make it function.” The designers at Topnotch keep the principals of living style in mind. A space should make you feel welcome, comfortable and calm, and stylish items should have a functional purpose. There are easy chairs that swivel. How practical and convenient is that? Many of the

furniture fabrics are made of washable material. A spilled glass of red wine at a gathering? No problem. With these careful details, friends and children can also feel at home. Heyser and her husband Josh expanded their showroom to include the space where Open Room once resided. The now 10,000 square foot showroom allows them to display large pieces and living room settings that they once would have had to warehouse. The expansion also allowed for a distinct room of “mountain modern” style, so it doesn’t have to get lost amongst some of the rooms where “rustic elegance” abounds. There are many things to see in this gorgeous showroom. The lamps are a highlight, with their variety and rich beauty. There are shelves of candles and chests made of reclaimed boat wood. There are antique-inspired games, both beautiful and fun to play. The rug room is filled with fine Fair Trade Oaxacan textiles, hand woven by Zapotec Indians. Their incredible talent shows brightly in their tapestries and weavings. The upstairs focuses on bedding, and a highlight is the gorgeous farmhouse-style bed made by a local craftsman.

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

arry Peterson’s jewelry shop on Sun Valley Road opened 48 years ago and has had the same interior design and showcases for the last 28. It was time for a revamp, the result of which is a much more modernized showroom with an open seating area in the center underneath a beautiful chandelier, a workshop space on the floor, new showcases, and a meeting area. “The cases were tired and we were tired of them,” Peterson says. “It was a beautiful store but the way it was laid out was more of a traditional, old-school retail jewelry layout where we were pretty much working over a showcase with clients. I wanted to give a more ‘gallery-feel’ to the store and to stand alongside the customer instead of across the case from them.” One of the biggest changes was moving part of Peterson’s workshop from the second floor onto the showroom. While Peterson has always made jewelry for the store (the original store was just his designs), many of his customers had no idea that he actually made jewelry, let alone on-site. “We do a lot of our own manufacturing and I don’t think a lot of people realized that with the workshop upstairs,” Peterson says. “In a lot of businesses, the trend is to buy from the source and we want to make it clear that we are the source. It’s home-grown product.” Peterson would like to get back to the store’s roots and use more of his own designs or that of other jewelers in the Valley in his store. The new openness of the space also allows for some possible classes and seminars and maybe even jewelry workshops in the upstairs space. F

GATHERINGS

an art and poetry based experiment in giving and receiving

Edited by Suzanne Hazlett

C

onceived by artist Lynda Lowe, the Gatherings Project sprang from her desire to contribute something of artistic value during the COVID 19 pandemic. She invited 54 visual artists to create original artworks on custom-built wooden boxes. Her idea expanded to include 54 literary artists who have contributed original works of poetry for inclusion within the boxes. Upon completion of the artwork, the poetry is enclosed, and the Gatherings boxes then begin to travel as each artist chooses a person to initially receive the box. The recipient takes possession of a box for up to three weeks and participates by adding something inside that speaks to their experience during the pandemic: narrative writing, commentary, a poem, artwork, a meaningful object. That person then chooses the next recipient, and so on in a sequence of giving and receiving. Some of the participating artists offer their sentiments here.

22

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

The Gatherings Project is a welcome chance for artists, poets, and creative persons chosen to be participants to come together in this time of isolation and collaborate in creating and filling 50-some unique composite containment vessels. As these receptacles for creative expression move from one individual to another, we counteract our pandemic isolation and work together to provide thoughtful, creative additions to the circulating containers. The result will be surprising juxtapositions of individual contributions that result in a collective rich conversation of meaning that brings us together. — Victoria Adams

“ ““

I have a profound reaction to these most difficult and world-shaking times that are, seemingly, without relief ... ongoing. These circumstances give impetus for my deep and hopefully honest response. The absence of self-judgment makes the artwork even more true. As an artist, this value in the process of creating is what gives it resonance and honesty. The one-word treatment of the title: “epluribusunum,” and the work visualizes the virus from the world perspective… that we ARE all one family of humanity, each responsible to one another…a “gathering,” one and all. Out of many, one. Facing this and creating resolution together, that is the hope. — Inez Storer It is wonderful to have a community of artists working together on a project that includes beauty and creativity, what a privilege this is. — Julie Speidel

Since I am a sculptor, Lynda offered to have the top of my box made thicker to accommodate carving a relief. When the box arrived, it had an interesting wood grain on the surface that reminded me of a landscape with a river. It clued me in to the idea of a girl dreamily looking out her window at the animals wishing that she could be outside too. — Gwynn Murrill

At times, I feel why should I create artwork? In a way, making art feels decadent because of the world-wide suffering. Again, we are privileged, social distancing here is possible, while it is not in other places and countries. I feel we are not in the same boat, but we are in the same storm. It feels like grieving. We are losing so many things that will never be the same again. In approaching the Gatherings Project, I drew inspiration from those precious Chinese lacquered boxes and spray painted everything bright red. I then took an existing portrait of mine and tore it into pieces and rearranged the face. Our lives are in flux as if they have been thrown into the air and come down into a scattered puzzle. — Marianne Kolb

I laid there so sick I could not move or think. Two months of COVID 19, unable to get beyond it, thinking I would die. Then someone would call me and ask, have I been able to create art...where was I going with all this in my art? Does it inspire me? No. They did not understand that this disease kills your energy, your spirit, your sense of purpose, your enthusiasm to continue. No, I was unable to create new art. After I regained my health, I heard from Lynda Lowe asking me to engage in her project, Gatherings. It was a much-needed call to action to create for the benefit of others. And gratefully brought back my creative spirit. — Judith Kindler

The pandemic has created a space in which we all want to reach out to each other in a different but profound way, as we suddenly cannot touch anyone but our closest live-in partners (if we have them). It has created a multitude of beautiful projects that are mostly virtual, nevertheless not less visceral. Everything in our world is connected, from cell to cell, from feather to hair; we are all one. Now more noticeable than ever, as the virus has pushed into almost every corner of our home, Mother Earth. Art can transform how we respond in times of crisis, as it carries the mythical power we all hunger for in these times. — Anne Siems

Lynda Lowe’s Gatherings Project has gotten me out from under the mostly literal, somewhat metaphorical covers in this time of isolation to help my creative community. As animals have long been part of my creative lexicon for the diverse, anthropomorphic characteristics we assign them; my contribution Shadow Box, employs this vocabulary. Birds, shed antlers, and shadows each have personal and cultural interpretations both ominous and hopeful. We can use these symbols from the natural world to reflect upon our humanity as we move forward. — Pamela DeTuncq

I believe the things we create hold our memories, experiences, and emotions. And when stories are added by others, we gain a better understanding of who we are – individually and with each other. — Joyce Gehl

T

he boxes are available for purchase on a first-come basis by emailing interest to gatheringsproject@gmail.com. Sales proceeds will be donated to Artist Trust and Idaho Commission on the Arts, two nonprofit organizations with well-established relief funds for creatives. Exhibitions are scheduled for viewing all the boxes, the poetry, and participants’ contributions at Patricia Rovzar Gallery in Seattle, Washington September 1 - 14; and Gail Severn Gallery in Sun Valley, Idaho September 18 - October 4. Visit gatheringsproject.com to learn more about the Gatherings Project.

ARTWORK BY LYNDA LOWE

I learned a lot about the experiences of giving and receiving through the Patra Passage project (patrapassage.com). With this endeavor, I’m already finding artists are teaching me things. They are reimagining the project on their terms, and I love their solutions. They are reinventing the boxes because, as artists, they are inherently creative minds, rule breakers, and risktakers. I am genuinely looking forward to seeing the finished boxes, reading the poetry, and to seeing what the recipients have contributed. It’s a magical mystery tour full of surprises. — Lynda Lowe

E-bikes 101 By Jim Santa

C

hances are if you’re reading this article you have an interest in electric bicycles, and well you should! E-bikes, aka pedelecs and pedal assist bikes, represent the fastest growing segment of the bicycle industry today. While e-bike popularity has been trending for some time in Europe, in comparison has only recently begun to catch fire here in the U.S. marketplace. This article is meant to help answer some of the questions most people have regarding e-bikes, so we’ll start with the basics.

30

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

First, there are 3 different classifications when it comes to e-bikes and these are as follows:

CLASS 1: PEDAL ASSIST

Pedal assist electric bikes, also commonly referred to as “pedelecs,” are equipped with electric motors that only work while the bike is being pedaled, and that are activated by some sort of pedal action sensor designed to detect when the bike is being used. In the United States, pedelecs are limited to 20 mph and cannot use motors that exceed 750 watts.

CLASS 3: SPEED PEDELECS

You know you want one.

Speed pedelecs, sometimes called “S-pedelecs,” are very similar to normal pedelecs in terms of their basic operation, with the important distinction that speed pedelecs make it possible for riders to combine the power of their legs with the power of the motor to achieve speeds up to 28 mph. S-pedelecs lack a throttle but can be equipped with a motor rated at up to 750 watts for pedal assist purposes only. Next there are two different configurations of motor/ drive systems, center drive and hub drive. Center mount/ drive systems put all the weight low and in the center of the bike for the best balance and performance, where in hub drive systems the motor is mounted within either the front or rear wheel hub. Most hub drive bikes are of the Class 2 variety which include a throttle. At Sturtevants, we focus primarily on Class 1 center drive models as most legislation on bike paths and Greenbelts, as-well-as mountain bike trails, is written to allow Class 1 bicycles but not the others. And as mentioned, center drive models will offer the best balance and performance. And perform they do! The most impressive thing about these bikes is how intuitive they feel and how much it’s like riding a “regular” bike. The drive systems in these bikes utilize pressure sensors that read the rider’s power input up to 1000 times per second. Push harder on the pedals and more power is applied, just like riding a regular bike. They also have different levels of assistance that are selected via a control unit mounted on the handlebar, offering levels of assistance from 50-300% of the power applied by the rider. E-bikes are now offered in every style of bike you may desire. So whether it be a mountain bike, kid and cargo hauler, commuter, road or gravel, or simply for a quick spin around town, there is an e-bike to fit your style and needs. Of course the best way to experience what e-bikes have to offer is to take one out for a spin and most shops that sell e-bikes also offer rentals. So get out and experience what these bikes have to offer, I can pretty much guarantee that you’ll be impressed! F

CLASS 2: POWER ON DEMAND

The key difference between power on demand electric bikes and pedal assist electric bikes is that power on demand bikes allow riders to activate and control the motor, regardless of whether or not they’re actually pedaling. Most power on demand bikes give riders full control of the motor by using a throttle, button, or trigger located on the handlebars; some models may also include a pedal activator as well. As with pedelecs, power on demand bikes are limited to 20 mph and 750 watt motors. SUN VALLEY SOURCE

Introduce Your Kids to Adventure By Bryant Dunn

un Valley is well known as America’s first destination four-season resort, as the birthplace of the chairlift and as a playground for the rich and famous. And of course the mountains surrounding Sun Valley offer endless outdoor recreation opportunities for locals and visitors alike. For children on summer vacation, Kids Camps are superb options to fill downtime and introduce them to new and exciting outdoor endeavors. Two extremely popular camps are offered by Sun Valley Outfitters. The Kids Flyfishing Camp and the Kids Adventure Camp, each lead by Sun Valley Outfitters’ professional guides, are geared toward campers age 7-14. The Kids Flyfishing Camp introduces children to all aspects of flyfishing including entomology, reading water, trout behavior, habitat and feeding behavior, fly tying and, of course, flyfishing. Adam Pennington, Camp Counselor and professional flyfishing guide and fly tier, leads these groups each week from Memorial Day through Labor Day. “Teaching kids the ins and outs of understanding trout and trout fishing is a passion,” Pennington said. “There is nothing more valuable to a young and developing mind than an introduction to Mother Nature. These lessons are invaluable and fun!” The Sun Valley Outfitters Kids Adventure Camp is lead by born-and-raised local certified Survival Instructor

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

Benji Hill. During these 6 hour camps, Hill teaches campers to build rescue shelters, purify water, build atlatls and bows from natural resources, demonstrates fire starting techniques and how to track big game animals among other skills. “The outdoors offers our campers the opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily lives, forces them to put down their phones and connect with their surroundings, all in a safe and fun way,” Hill said. In addition to introducing his campers to new and valuable outdoor skills, Hill regularly instructs his campers to take off their shoes and get a little muddy, directly connecting them to their natural surroundings. “It’s all part of making a connection with Mother Nature. It’s symbolic but also results in kids – who are used to living in an asphalt world – becoming grounded in Nature,” Hill offered. In many cases, parents sign their children up for both camps. Since each camp is a one day event, this offers families an excellent opportunity to enjoy multiple outdoor experiences during a visit to Sun Valley, and gives parents time to enjoy the area for themselves without being concerned about entertaining their kids without a break. For more information about Sun Valley Outfitters Kids Camps, visit www.sunvalleyoutfitters.com or call 208-928-7843 to book what just might be the highlight of your kid’s summer vacation! F

BEYOND THE FOG LIES

CLARITY By Suzanne Hazlett, MBA, CIMA®, CFP®

The summer sun is streaming, and while uncertainty still looms, there are reasons for optimism that clarity lies beyond the fog that has hovered since early this year.

I

was recently asked a question that caused a lump to well up in my throat. “What will happen when I die?” The thoughtful question was posed by someone who wanted to know about the future experience of those she loves and has entrusted with managing the administration of her estate she intends to leave to their stewardship. She wanted to know if there were any steps she could take to make their future responsibilities a little easier, a little more lucid. What she was seeking was a way possible to remove the fog of confusion. She wanted clarity. Should we want to emerge from the fog of financial and estate planning, where do we begin?

42

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

LET’S START HERE Decide whether you’re most comfortable organizing your financial cupboards electronically or in hardcopy form. There exist many opportunities to use secure online personal finance websites, archives, or vaults. If old school is more your style, purchase or repurpose a large three-ring binder. NEXT It’s recommended that taxpayers retain copies of returns and supporting documents for seven years. Whether you scan, electronically archive and then shred sensitive documents, or maintain a physical file cabinet – now may be the time to discard records aged eight years and older and put the prior seven years’ documents in order.

SAFEGUARDS Insurance policies allow us to protect our assets, our income, our families, and businesses. Whether directly or through an employer, do you hold life insurance, health, disability, long-term care, homeowners, auto, business, or personal liability coverage? If so, let’s establish a go-to location where all relevant information is summarized – policy type, account number, agent and insurer contact information, and other details helpful in an emergency so they can be accessed by you or by a trusted contact. STATE OF YOUR ESTATE While estate planning does allow you to preplan the allocation of your life’s accumulations, it encompasses more than just the distribution of your assets. Should you be unable to make decisions due to incapacitation, who would act on your behalf? If you have minor children, what will the future hold for them in your absence? Do you have a will, a trust, separately designated beneficiaries on insurance policies or retirement accounts? Do you hold assets in common; with right of survivorship; or in community property titling? Do you employ transfer-on-death designations? Have you updated your documents since a previously selected beneficiary has died, or have you divorced with a former spouse still in line to inherit your holdings? Assess what you have in place and update your documents as needed.

REAL PROPERTY If you own real estate and other assets not represented in your monthly or quarterly investment statements, account for them with available annual valuations and other pertinent details.

ADVOCATES AND REPRESENTATIVES Lastly, if you do have an advocate you’ve legally authorized with power of attorney and or an executor appointed to assume the responsibility of settling your estate, have you communicated with them how you’ve organized your financial household? Do they know how and where to access your information, so when necessary, they’re able to act in your and your family’s best interests? At least once a year, it’s a healthy habit to bring some clarity to the haze that may have settled in around our financial and estate matters. F

ong been known as a premier golf facility, the area’s only private country club has been methodically investing in their racquets and fitness campus, now regarded as one of the most complete complexes in the region. The facility boasts eight tennis courts (with four indoor courts during the winter season), a platform tennis court, four dedicated pickleball courts and two “clay” tennis courts. Since taking the helm in 2010, Director of Racquets and Fitness, Reid Arthur, has seen the complex grow from a four court seasonal operation to a year-round hub of activity. In March of last year, the club completed a fitness center expansion that has become host to group fitness classes, Peloton bike reservations and Barre workouts. Arthur and his staff have been able to leverage the new space during the pandemic by using the extra square footage to space out cardio equipment. By creating large amounts of space between equipment, periodically closing the facility for regular cleanings and utilizing an online reservation system for members to block out equipment for their workouts, the staff at The Valley Club is doing everything possible to ensure a safe environment for their members. In addition to the racquets and fitness offerings, the recreation center offers members seasonal access to both a family and lap pool, a jacuzzi as well as a full service restaurant during the summer season. Final plans for the facility include a significant food and beverage expansion that would give members year-round dining access by expanding on the current indoor space. F

rystal and Colby’s love story started as more of a friendship of kinds. Family friends for 20+ years, their connection grew with a love for family, and a passion for adventure and endless laughter. Crystal is a 4th generation native Californian and grew up on a ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley. Colby grew up in Ketchum and joined the US Navy after graduating college from Boise State University. Although they both lived in California, Sun Valley has always had a special place in both

their hearts. Colby proposed on top of Bald Mountain and they knew right away they wanted to get married in the place that incorporated their passion for the outdoors and captured the beauty of Idaho and also bring all their friends and family together. Colby and Crystal’s connection to friends and family extended beyond the guest list. They chose to enlist friends in the industry to pull off the perfect day. They were married by a close friend and chose a family friend’s backyard as the venue. Dear friend Tara, with Tara Bella Flowers, put all of her love and creativity into their flowers. EB and Jason, with Two Bird Studio, perfectly documented their day through photos and a video that highlights the amazing day. The couple honored their connection to friends and family in the details of their reception. A personalized message from Colby and Crystal was printed on the individual seating card for each guest. To honor Colby’s late father, photographer David Stoecklein, the table numbers were displayed on his photographs. The guests mingled at the whiskey bar that included a life-sized cutout of Colby’s best man who was serving a military tour overseas. They got silly in the photo booth and let loose on the dance floor. F SUN VALLEY SOURCE

Sun Valley, Texas Style JENNAH AND ANDREW have been fortunate to

travel to many places throughout their lives but only a few spots keep them coming back on a regular basis … one of which is Sun Valley. Being from Texas, not many of their family and friends had been to Sun Valley so the thought of introducing them to this special place made for an easy selection for their destination wedding. Amanda Seaward of Absolute Weddings assisted the couple with their kick off party at Whiskey’s, welcome dinner at the Sun Valley Clubhouse and main event at Trail Creek. While an early October date might be risky for some, the date was an obvious choice as they would ultimately share their wedding date with the bride’s parents who were celebrating their 34th wedding anniversary. Despite the days leading up to the wedding being filled with windy snow showers and cloudy skies, the sun came out just in time for their ceremony at Trail Creek where they wed under a beautiful flower arch with a snow capped Baldy backdrop. The ceremony was very personal and intimate with the groom’s father officiating and the bride and groom reading vows they had written to each other. With the help of Tara Bella Flowers, the reception tent was transformed into a rustic, yet romantic setting completed with farm tables and flower draped chandeliers. Jennah and Andrew wanted their reception to be elegant, yet informal, with the main focus on everyone having a good time. Rather than a formal seated dinner, there were food stations filled with Jennah and Andrew’s favorites such as mac and cheese and chicken fingers with a table just for Jennah’s beloved dipping sauces. There were several fun surprises for their guests throughout the night including a photo bus, late night snacks, and lots of dance floor props. Their electric band kept everyone on the dance floor where Jennah and Andrew spent the night celebrating with their family and friends, proving that not everything is bigger in Texas. F

ALONG THE WAY

Photo: James Bourret

SNRA (Visitor Center)

Begin with a stop at the SNRA Visitor Center, about 8 miles north of Ketchum. The center is a great source of information with maps, flyers, and free audiotape tours. Further up is Galena Lodge, the starting point of hiking, biking, and cross-country trails, considered one of the best public trail systems in North America. Back on the road, you will begin the ascent to Galena Summit.

GALENA SUMMIT

Even locals can’t help but smile at the gorgeous view just over the top of Galena Summit. This is a must-stop for a view of the entire region including four mountain ranges, the small, curling creek of the Salmon headwaters, and high-altitude ranch lands that trace the river north.

ALTURAS & PETIT LAKES

Upon reaching the valley floor, pass the Smiley Creek Lodge and look for signs to Alturas and Petit lakes. This pristine string of glacial lakes hugs the mountains along the southwest side of the valley, offering a selection of day-use picnic areas, campgrounds, fishing streams, hiking trailheads, and boat ramps for enjoying the splendors of the Sawtooth Mountains. Alturas and Petit Lakes can be reached by car. For peaceful wilderness hiking set your sights on Alice, Toxaway, or Hell Roaring Lake. Dozens of well-marked and maintained trails are located all along Idaho Highway 75. Check your SNRA map to locate trailheads and other points of interest.

SMILEY CREEK LODGE

Smiley Creek is a beautiful spot on the Headwaters of the Salmon River. Stop by Smiley Creek Lodge and enjoy a burger. For road and trail conditions, it’s a good idea to make local inquiries at Smiley Creek, or the Stanley Ranger Station.

FISH HATCHERY

The Sawtooth Fish Hatchery is a fun stop for anyone interested in fish and wildlife. The viewing room provides opportunities to view steelhead trout from March to May and Chinook salmon throughout the year. The visitors’ center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. most days.

RANGER STATION

The Stanley Ranger Station, on a paved road to the west of Idaho Highway 75, is worth a stop, both for the information you can gather and for the view, particularly of Thompson Peak, the highest peak in the Sawtooths. If you borrowed one of the free audiotapes at the SNRA headquarters, this is the place to return it.

REDFISH LAKE

The queen of the lakes that lie along the base of the Sawtooths is Redfish Lake. At 4 miles long, it is the largest of the lakes and has the most developed facilities, including a Visitors’ Center, Redfish Lake Lodge, several campgrounds, a marina, horse corrals, a picnic area, and parking for the many hiking trails that start in the vicinity. The lodge has a store and café, as well as guest rooms and cabins. Redfish Lake is an extremely popular camping destination during the summer season, so reservations are advisable if you are interested in staying overnight. SUN VALLEY SOURCE

FROM A HOLISTIC POINT OF VIEW:

Everything is going to be okay. By Julie Johnson

May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears. — Nelson Mandela

I

f one allows their thoughts and energy to dwell on stressful situations, it can result in being overcome by fear, worry, sleeplessness, and even physical ailments. Stress is essentially anything that puts strain on the mind. Naturally it’s a challenge to not be under more stress while in a worldwide pandemic. Stress can lead to higher cortisol and adrenal levels. Higher cortisol and adrenal levels may lead to weight gain and or cardiovascular disease. These stressors on the body are gateway hormones to diabetes, high blood pressure and Alzhiemer’s. Coronaviruses have an easier time of wreaking havoc in the body, or host, when in these weakened conditions. Simple daily habits are critical for staying emotionally balanced during stressful times. Getting outside to exercise and sleeping regular hours are extremely helpful. Other helpful habits include drinking plenty of water, eating nutritious meals, and minimizing things like sugar, caffeine, and alcohol. If you have been putting a few extra pounds on during this stressful time, you are not alone. Weight gain is an imbalance in the body’s chemistry. Stress causes more adrenaline. The body’s natural response to adrenaline is an increased craving of the foods that most quickly convert into glucose. A burst of glucose gives the body a burst of energy needed for the adrenaline that comes to our rescue. Only we are not actually being chased by anything real. If not put to immediate use, this burst of glucose is stored as fat in the body to be burned as fuel later. If ever there was a time to get your health in order, this is it. And by the way, our body’s response to bugs and viruses – as in getting sick – is the body’s natural way of

80

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

staying healthy. A fever kills bugs and viruses in the body. Inflammation carries white blood cells (macrophages) to places that need its inflammatory help. How we look at the body’s defense mechanism is important. Do we villainize our bodies natural response or do we thank our bodies for creating immunity? Is it the virus or the host? Choose foods that nourish and heal. Choose relationships that are loving and supportive. Choose joyful thoughts over sad, and find spiritual practices that are grounding. Why not make our health and our world around us the number one priority? Not tomorrow, but now. We can start by supporting our local farmers through direct sales. These gardeners, farmers and ranchers are using less chemicals, less invasive tilling practices and conservative water usage. The animals we source from the gardeners, farmers and ranchers are raised and processed humanly. SILVER LINING This is an opportunity to flip the health victim narrative and take charge of our rightful vibrant destiny. Through our actions, we can make fundamental changes to our processed eating habits. Choose to know how our food is grown and how many hands it has passed through. And learn a little bit about nutrition along the way. Times of crises precipitate times of change. We have the opportunity to change our ‘sick care’ system to a ‘preventive care’ system, and our government’s policy of preparedness. We can rebuild our in-state food processing facilities and use our resources better. We are smart, passionate people. We can reclaim our health and our planet’s health. F

OUTDOOR GUIDE Sun Valley and its surrounding areas will not leave you lacking for activities and adventure. With some of the best trails in the west, the mountain biking and hiking are second to none.

THE BIG HITCH

Painting by Howard Lacina

Due to the Coronavirus – for the first time in over 60 years – the Big Hitch Parade and other Wagon Days events will not take place during Labor Day Weekend. The Big Hitch Parade is one of the largest non-motorized parades in the Pacific Northwest, featuring the Lewis Ore Wagons as its grand finale. The Lewis Ore Wagons are the only ones of their kind in existence. In 1958, a few freight wagons were still in working condition, but none could match the Lewis Ore Wagons. These massive wagons are larger than an average freight wagon and were built to withstand extreme stress when loaded with ore to traverse over Trail Creek Summit. The Lewis family received several offers to purchase the wagons because they were so rare, including one from the Disney Corporation. Instead of selling the wagons, they chose to donate them to the City of Ketchum on the condition that they remain on display for the public. Soon after, they became the highlight of the Wagon Days Parade, and appropriately named “The Big Hitch.” This Labor Day Weekend, the Ore Wagons will be on display in Ketchum so you can have an up close and personal look. 92

RAFTING A day in Sunbeam, Idaho with White Otter Outdoor Adventures simply can’t be beat! Your day starts with fresh blueberry muffins, raspberry scones, egg pies, and a good cup of coffee. Morning sun and some incredible food are followed by the sharing of laughter on the waters of the crystal clear Upper Main Salmon River. Your day ends in the afternoon sun on the deck of the Sunbeam Café. Rafting from Sunbeam is a must when you’re here for vacation. Even the drive to and from the river will leave you speechless. There are very few places as beautiful and as untouched as the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. www.whiteotter.com | 208-788-5005

The event includes an authentic Folklife Fair, culinary events featuring lamb and local foods, storytelling, Wool Fest, multicultural experiences, entertainment, demonstrations and presentations, cooking, championship sheepdog trials and the Trailing of the Sheep Parade (Idaho living history) with 1,500 sheep trailing down Main Street in Ketchum. www.trailingofthesheep.org Photo: Darby Northcott

HORSEBACK RIDING Horseback riding offers a peaceful way to access the remote regions of Idaho. Sun Valley Outfitters can help you gain access to glacier-blue alpine lakes, steaming natural hot springs, resplendent views, and world-class fishing.
