Re-Energize Your Space with

D

o the blooming flowers of summer and the warm air make you feel like you want to freshen up your living space? Well, you are not alone. Here are some simple ideas to add pops of color and bring some vitality back into your home. Color has the ability to bring different sensations into your home. Consider these tips as you identify areas that need some freshening up. TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT YOUR SPACE First, take a look at what you are working with and the functionality of the area. Sometimes your space is ideal and only needs a few small tweaks. Highlighting your key pieces that are important while removing the extra stuff that has been accumulating might be the adjustment needed. Other times, you might have to consciously work at changing the entire room. In this case, you might consider hiring a professional. With the assistance of an Interior Designer, you might be pleasantly surprised at their

12

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

practical expertise on how things go together. Often this can save you time, money, and internet frustration. START WITH A CLEAN SLATE It is a good idea to step back and start with a clean slate. This will help to create blank spaces that tailor a completely new look. Start with a declutter of anything that you feel no longer belongs in the space. Begin by removing one or two items. You might find this creates space you didn’t even realize you had. Next, try rearranging your furniture. Think about new ways to invite conversation with different seating or different arrangements. Rearrange and repurpose your artwork and accessories. Be open to the idea of moving items to new locations in your home. BRING LIFE TO YOUR SPACE Greenery gives you a punch of color and can add softness to any space. Beautiful realistic plants in many varieties are now available that add life to your spaces

TEXTURIZE WITH COLOR Don’t be afraid to mix it up. Mixing patterns can bring some pizzazz and cheerfulness to any room. Accent pillows are an easy way to make a major change and can be very inexpensive. Spark interest by introducing a single pop of color in a solid textured pillow, accent chair or sofa. Keep in mind the proportions of your pillows to your furniture pieces. Many local shops allow you to try things on approval which helps the visualization process. There is no comparison to colors in real life! Computers always distort the color and view. DISCOVER NEW FOUND TREASURES It’s amazing how decorative items can make a huge statement in a room. Accessories are an affordable and perfect way to freshen up a tired space. Begin by identifying those key pieces that create the main focus impact. Areas like your fireplace mantle, dining table, console or coffee table can instantly transform into a new focal point with placing unique accessories and freshening up your existing items. Redistribute other older accessories to new spaces in your home and even eliminate a few. ADD A SPLASH OF COLOR A fresh coat of paint can add immediate appeal! The colors you surround yourself with have a unique way of changing one’s state of mind. Light colors can make a room feel bigger or can make a room feel very stark in a large space. Darker paints on accent walls can give you the illusion of space and open up the room making it feel larger. Rich colors can give one a sense of comfort; resulting in either a sanctuary for reflection or a comfortable gathering area. A color consultation, with a professional, can help you understand the complementary colors and color opposites that can highlight and change the items in your room. Have fun with color and bring some new sensations into your home! F

7TH ANNUAL

August is a busy time for events in the Wood River Valley; there’s the Sun Valley Summer Symphony, the Sun Valley Arts & Crafts Festival, and the general fun of the outdoors to compete with. But for the seventh year in a row, the Wood River Valley Studio Tour will entice visitors and locals alike to be awed by the number of working artists in this small mountain community by touring studios in Sun Valley, Ketchum, Hailey and Bellevue. SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, AUGUST 17 & 18, 42 artists throughout the Valley will open their artistic work spaces to friends, family, neighbors, and visitors, letting everyone in on just what makes these artists tick. By Hayden Seder

C

o-founded in 2012 by WRVST president Suzanne Hazlett along with founding board members Brooke Bonner and Mary Williams, the Tour is a nonprofit organization championing the creative entrepreneurs in the Valley while also allowing people of all interests, ages, and art education to learn more about the artistic process

24

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

through the viewing of professional working studios. Hazlett was inspired to start the Wood River Valley’s tour after experiencing a similar tour, the Roaring Fork Studio Tour in Colorado. That tour spanned a distance of 42 miles from Aspen to Glenwood Springs; Hazlett knew that if people were willing to cover that distance, the 18 miles that spans the Wood River Valley was even more

doable. “The physical aspect of the Valley makes it easy to manage a trip up and down whether by bike or car or if visitors want to focus on one area, they can feasibly see many studios on foot,” says Hazlett. “And the abundance of artists who maintain studios in this intimate mountain community made the tour possible.” In its first year, Hazlett and her team only expected to have 25 artists

“The annual Tour allows Valley residents and visitors alike this rare opportunity to see into the minds of creatives – what inspires them? Are their studios vast or intimate? What is their process?” – Suzanne Hazlett, Wood River Valley Studio Tour co-founder and president

and ended up with a whopping 55, truly confirming the interest that artists have in sharing an intimate part of themselves—their studios— with the public. “Starting the Studio Tour required fostering trust with the artists and with the visitor to let them know that this was an opportunity to break down barriers—whether real or imaginary—to understanding more about art,” explains Hazlett. “That artist is welcoming strangers, neighbors, and friends into the space where their work is created. How much more intimate can you be as an artist?” Over the last seven years, the tour has strived to constantly elevate the experience for its patrons, from changing the time of year of the event to the location of its group exhibition to how information on the Tour is published. As in previous years, all members of the WRVST participate in a group exhibition displaying one work of art that represents the artist’s current body of work that may be viewed in their studio. Additionally, each artist donates an original 8”x8” work of art which is installed in a mosaic-like installation coined the Mosaic Project. Each of the artworks is available for purchase through an online auction that will commence Friday, August 9 through Sunday, August 18 with proceeds benefiting the nonprofit, Wood River Valley Studio Tour, Inc. The Mosaic Project will also be exhibited in person from August 16 through 18, 11am-5pm at the Ketchum Innovation Center (KIC). A reception with the artists will take place at KIC on Friday, August 16

from 5-8pm to kick off the weekend, followed by studio touring from 10am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday, August 17 and 18.

PARTNERING WITH KIC

Partnering with KIC this year is a first for the Tour and one that fits perfectly. The Tour has always promoted a sense of entrepreneurship among its artists and the artists in general in the Valley, which lines up with the core of the KIC’s mission according to Hazlett: “KIC helps move forward the genius of the entrepreneurial spirit we already have here in this Valley and to make connections with other entrepreneurs; they certainly have already done that for us.” Aside from just providing a venue for the Tour’s group exhibit and reception, KIC and the WRVST have teamed up to provide professional development programs for both the Tour’s and the Valley’s professional artists. The KIC hosted the first of these development workshops in April on the subject of Social Media 101 for Artists which drew about 40 Valleywide artists. In May, the KIC hosted a follow-up workshop, Social Media 201 for Artists. “We see it as a great return on investment of time to help individual artists market themselves and in doing so, they help market the tour and that helps elevate other artists and overall then, elevates our community in garnering national recognition as a world-class arts

destination,” explains Hazlett. Emmi Buck, Communications Director for the KIC, has been working directly with Hazlett in putting these workshops on and couldn’t agree more about the benefits of the organizational partnership. “KIC looks forward to providing networking opportunities to local creatives looking to spread their work and elevate their brand. Partnering with the WRVST is a great example of how KIC drives community building benefiting both our local economy and Wood River Valley ties.” More workshops will take place in the coming months before the tour but like the first two, workshop content will be determined by a survey sent out to roughly 230 artists in the Valley. Also new to the Tour this year is a stand-alone magazine that will be published on August 1 and provide a guide to the artists, maps of the different cities, and beautifully-curated pages. “This is a physical indication of our continued desire to enhance the quality of what we do, how we deliver the information about artists, and how we strive to create a meaningful experience for our visitors,” explains Hazlett. Whether it’s your first time or your 7th, if you’ve never been in a studio or seen where art is created or if you’re an art connoisseur, the Wood River Valley Studio Tour has a little something for everyone. So get in your car, on your bike, or tie on some walking shoes and see what the WRVST can offer you this August. F

heney describes herself as a contemporary realist and symbolist painter as she incorporates objects into her ethereal paintings and in doing so engages an emotional connection with the viewer. “In the process of creating each piece, I expose emotions and thoughts that deserve attention and recognition and resolution. She explains, “the resolution is a letting go. In the quiet, counting heartbeats, I listen to the stories I tell myself and breathe – surrender.” As a child, Cheney was encouraged to follow her creative leanings. Her aunt and namesake Dorothea Morell Brown was a professional artist who recognized artistic talent materializing in her niece at an early age. Born the second of seven children, henceforth

she was dubbed “the family artist.” “I often received artists’ materials and art books for Christmas and birthday presents. There was no question in my mind that I would attend art school.” While earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Cheney credits the many accomplished photo-realist painters on the faculty of the Art Department at USF for influencing her early work. Cheney begins her day in the studio by quietly taking in and reflecting on her work in progress, often many paintings will be underway and in different stages of development. Books, catalogs or periodicals are perused for visual and literary stimuli while music wafts through the studio. Poignant prose, editorials, the work of other artists and music are all triggers that

instigate her creative process. “Music and lyrics are probably the greatest sources. I must paint to music.” Once her painting surfaces are prepared, oil paint and medium are layered repetitiously. The early stages of Cheney’s paintings may change in appearance by the minute, often dramatically. To allow considered review of a work’s progress, she photographs the evolution of each piece. IN THE SERVICE OF

OTHERS

By Suzanne Hazlett, MBA, CIMAÂŽ, CFPÂŽ

As a financial planner and investment advisor, Suzanne Hazlett works with private, corporate, and nonprofit clients to help build, manage, and preserve their net worth. She is also a founder of two nonprofit organizations, Wood River Valley Studio Tour and Giving Guide of the Wood River Valley. Her firm, HAZLETT WEALTH MANAGEMENT, LLC, is based in Ketchum, Idaho. Within her column, Suzanne explores different topics related to the financial aspects of our lives. 34

onprofit organizations are so entwined in our local communities it may be easy to overlook the impact they have on our daily lives. The missions for not-for-profit organizations are varied. They may be particularly aligned in meeting basic human needs, animal welfare, artistic, scientific, educational or other essential services and value.

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” — Mahatma Gandhi exempt organizations by definition, include private family foundations, fraternal organizations and civic leagues, most of us think specifically of public charities when we think of nonprofits. Within the Wood River Valley, there are hundreds of nonprofit organizations which originally established in the region or make a positive impact with an auxiliary presence. Out of that volume, approximately 70 are organized as tax-exempt public charities. FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS Donor retention and education by nonprofit organizations have become increasingly important. Changes to the U.S. tax code that took effect in 2018 mean some charitable gifts may no longer yield a tax benefit for the contributor. In 2017, charitable giving by Americans exceeded a record $400 billion. The comprehensive data for last year will be published this summer. We do already know that while overall giving increased slightly in 2018, smaller gifts have declined along with a reduction in the total number of donors. While many are under the impression that charitable giving will decrease since fewer people will be able to itemize their charitable deductions, the reality is people often donate not for tax reasons but for the good of a cause.

Many nonprofits defy singular categorization as their reach, and social contributions are diverse. BY ANY OTHER NAME The key difference between nonprofit organizations and for-profit enterprises is that nonprofits have two bottom lines – a social objective as well as a financial one. While tax-

WHAT MOTIVATES US TO GIVE? The Seven Faces of Philanthropy authors Russ Alan Prince and Karen Maru File attribute seven different rationales as to the basis of donor motivations: doing good makes sense; doing good is God’s will; doing good is good for business; doing good is fun; doing good feels right; doing good in return; and doing good is a family tradition. As humans capable of complex emotions, and with our charitable choices

influenced by a variety of experiences, we may be inclined to identify with any combination of these views. VOLUNTEER VALUE Volunteers have proven to be essential to our social and quantifiable economic wellbeing. According to the Corporation for National Community Service, one-quarter of Americans volunteer annually. The volunteer spirit is even higher in the State of Idaho. The Gem State ranks 5th in the nation, with 34% of Idahoans volunteering their time for a cause. On an annual basis, this equates to more than $1 billion of service contributed. BECOME INVOLVED The enduring value a community receives from the existence of nonprofits is the enhanced quality and meaning of life charitable organizations provide. With the changing landscape of charitable giving, sustaining our nonprofit organizations has become more critical. Whether financially through outright or legacy gifts, or with the investment of volunteer time, everyone can play a meaningful role in contributing to the success of charitable missions. Donors and volunteers seeking to support a cause that aligns with their values may be heartened to learn the inaugural Giving Guide of the Wood River Valley will be available electronically and in print this summer. The guide aims to elevate and garner exposure for nascent as well as established nonprofits within the greater Sun Valley community, while providing supporters with volunteer opportunities, corporate engagement information, and philanthropic insights. hen Alyssa and Michael met back in undergrad at UC Berkeley, they were worried that they had nothing in common. However, it didn’t take them long to realize that they both loved the mountains and skiing in particular. After dozens of ski trips together, Sun Valley became a spot that they both came to love. Michael proposed in November of 2018 and they used their annual December visit to ski their potential venue. Once they learned that they could take the gondola to the Round House for the ceremony, they couldn’t imagine a better place for their wedding. The one compromise

they made with their family was to promise not to get married on skis in the middle of February. On a beautiful sunny September weekend, they brought together their family and friends for a series of events over several days to introduce everyone to this special Idaho town and celebrate their future together. Everything seemed perfect as Alyssa walked down the aisle to ‘Here Comes the Sun’. But almost immediately, a storm of wind and rain blew through. For any other couple it may have ruined the ceremony. For Michael and Alyssa, it brought laughter and smiles, reminding them of how they fell in love on a stormy Bay Area day, and it didn’t seem to be a coincidence that the storm stopped almost exactly as soon as they started walking down the aisle, together. Today, they live in San Francisco, happily looking forward to their next Idaho trip. F

Love Blooms IN SUN VALLEY

J

uly 1, 2015 was a special day for Alicia Dry and Eric Cohen. It marked the first time that Eric brought Alicia to Sun Valley where she fell in love with the town just as she did with Eric when they began dating in 2014. She knew then that when Eric proposed, they would get married in Sun Valley and it only seemed fitting that they got married that same day, three years later at Trail Creek Pavilion. Alicia’s impeccable taste and attention to detail made the planning easy along with the help of Amanda Seaward, of Absolute Weddings. Alicia enjoyed the planning process from creating the invitations and personalized favors, to designing a beautiful table and tent décor with Tara Bella Flowers. Family is key to both Alicia and Eric and they made sure to incorporate family traditions including getting married under Ericʼs grandfatherʼs tallit (the cloth that hangs over the four poles, creating the wedding canopy called the “chuppah”) and using her grandmotherʼs wedding band during their wedding vows. After the ceremony and a brief moment for the couple to take it all in, Alicia and Eric were ready to start the night off dancing the Hora with their guests. The Salamanders band entertained enthusiastically and without taking a break. Advice from the couple: make great connections with the local vendors who are fun and easy to work with so that you can enjoy your day with friends and family, as it goes so fast! F

I

BEAUTY & WELLNESS FROM INSIDE OUT

notice more and more the importance of health and how the need to be healthy grows stronger as I age. How many people say “If you don’t have your health you have nothing?” Yes, everything for me emanates out of this quest for good health. As my search continues I find this valley to be rich in people, places and services that can help achieve this. I went back to school to become a health coach and I believe if you Change your habits – you can change your life. Sun Valley Lifetracks assists you through your life changes, by avoiding becoming stuck, and providing the confidence you need to become your more authentic self. My friends at Pure Body Bliss just recently formed a new partnership in their studio in Hailey. Alysha Oclassen, Jacqui Terra and Gabby Rivelo have come together with different skill sets to nurture your body, mind and soul, and assist you in your personal growth and self-care practice. With a full-time holistic empowerment coach, and a fully equipped pilates, yoga, fitness and massage studio, the girls guide you in finding that Your bliss is an inside job. I believe feeding myself the best food I can find, is the optimal measure to fuel my body. We are fortunate to have nutrient rich food at our fingertips here in the Wood River Valley. Starting in June, I look forward to our local Farmersʼ Market where produce, dairy, and meats from sustainable agriculture, grace the new location at the paid parking lot at the bottom of River Run. Plan a hike and a picnic to the Ketchum location every Tuesday, and Thursday in Hailey. This is your opportunity to guarantee that your food is wholesome and nutritious. Walking around Ketchum, I often frequent NourishMe, a health food store and market. At NourishMe, there is a concerted effort to educate consumers on the benefits of healthy animal meat

By Deborah Burns

versus non-healthy, industrially-raised animal meat, which can be loaded with GMO feed. Among its offering is grass-fed beef from Silver Spring Ranch in Picabo. “Grasses are metabolized through constant chewing,” says Julie Johnson, NourishMe owner and a licensed nutritionist. “This converts those omegas, vitamins A, K2, B12 and D3 into something our bodies can access. The omegas in grass-fed beef are equal to what you can get from eating salmon. We need nutrients from whole foods.” “Having an appreciation for your farmer is an easy way to start this joyful process,” she says. “Here, in the Wood River Valley, we are so lucky that there is a group of farmers willing to make the trek up to our corner in the mountains with their organically grown wares. At NourishMe, we are visited weekly, all year, by these local farmers, selling and sharing their fantastic produce.” This is the most important mission for NourishMe: working together, getting in the kitchen and cooking up something wholesome, yummy and nourishing. Supporting local farmers supports not just them, not just you, but the health of the planet. Because I am relentless in my search for Wellness, I paid a visit to Glow Live Food Café and had some amazing results while undergoing Quantum Neuro Reset Therapy treatment from Molly Brown this winter. Glow, which opened

in 2008, is owned by holistic doctor Molly Brown. Glow uses all organic and plant-based ingredients, showcases smoothie bowls, superfood smoothies, wraps, salads, pressed juices, cold brew coffee, and superfood desserts. Dine in or enjoy the bright summer stone patio. Glow offers seasonal cleanses supervised and led by Dr. Brown, who also holds a master’s degree in plant-based nutrition and has extensive experience with autoimmune conditions and appropriate detoxification. Deciding to be healthy takes work and commitment. I have been a member at the YMCA for several years and to me it is more than a gym. At the Y, I always get my needs met with the changing classes that allow me to mingle with all different people, who come together with common beliefs. “We love our community and enroll in programs that develop the whole person in us. Working with mind, spirit and body, regardless of age, income or background.” The definition of Wellness from the inside out, is truly accomplished at the YMCA. I cannot finish this article without mentioning yes, the face and skin. It takes daily practice along with the good food we eat. I love Diedre Piper at Simply Skin, who always has a treatment and great advice on what I should be doing in my home skin care regime. Her studio located in the 511 Building, has amazing products for sale. Diedre a “Medical Aesthetic Nurse” is on call daily to coach you on your skin care. Some of the products she has to offer range from Obagi, Skinbetter Science and Skin Medica Dermal Repair – a favorite of mine. The Revision Skincare Tinted Moisturizer, is a product I do not leave the house without. These great people and places are just a few of the amazing resources we have here in our valley. I am fortunate and blessed to be living here in this health conscience community. F SUN VALLEY SOURCE

PIONEER CABIN IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

I

n August and September of 2018 major improvements were made to our community’s beloved Pioneer Cabin. Built in 1937, Pioneer Cabin is North America’s first high alpine backcountry skiing hut and has been a spectacular, albeit challenging, destination for tens of thousands of hikers, skiers, bikers, and equestrians over the 80-year history of the cabin. Led by visionary Bard Glenne, (an active octogenarian who is as old as the cabin itself) local outdoor shop Sturtevants organized several work parties and local businesses to support his vision, while dozens of individuals lent their time and professional expertise to help make improvements to this legendary cabin. Although the cabin has seen occasional attention over the years, this latest process is the most substantial. Beginning in the fall of 2016, Glenne led Sturtevants employees and friends on a much-needed cleaning project. While substantial sanitary progress was made with that initial effort, the scope of what was truly needed was just being realized. Properly refurbishing the Pioneer Cabin would require financial support. With help from the Ketchum Ranger District who applied for funds from The National Forest

Foundation, $10,000 was granted in early 2018. With these funds in place, the planning for the summer’s work began. The money largely went to over 10 horse and mule trains moving supplies up and down the 4-mile, 2,600 vertical foot trail, in addition to a new wood stove and building materials. During four big work parties (and dozens of individual day efforts) in the summer and fall of 2018, a passionate crew of locals spent their free time replacing the west side floor structure and foundation, building extensive drainage systems and retaining walls, rebuilding its front door, replacing windows, staining exterior walls, building new entry stairs, refurbishing the floors, installing a new wood stove and chimney, new table tops, new hanging hooks, digging a new outhouse, general sanitization, and much more. With more than 70 volunteer days recorded, the 2018 Pio Cabin improvement project was a true community effort we can be proud of. Special thanks go out to The National Forest Foundation, Bard Glenne and Sturtevants, Renee Catherine and Ketchum Ranger District, Craig Maxwell and Maxwell Structural Design Studio, Nate Scales and Cumulus Carpentry, Mark Driver, Glass Masters, Rocky Mountain Hardware, and many more. THE VALLEY CLUB

Golf Course Renovation

T

he Valley Club’s $7.5 million renovation of its original Hale Irwin golf course (North and South Nines) is nearing completion. The South Nine renovation was completed in the fall of 2018 and opened for play in the spring of 2019, at which time renovation of the North Nine began. Having 27 holes has allowed the Club to maintain 18 holes available for play throughout the renovation project. All construction will be completed by the fall of 2019 and playable in the spring of 2020. The new design focuses on enhanced playability for all levels, aesthetics and water conservation. Designed by TVC member and Hall of Fame golfer Davis Love III along with Beau Welling, The Valley Club is excited to elevate the golf experience for its members. “The new design of the Irwin Course complements the unique style of our Fazio Nine and takes better advantage of the beautiful setting we enjoy here in the Wood River Valley”, said Barry Bevers, in his 17th season as General Manager. When completed, the course will be more playerfriendly and fun for high handicap golfers, yet more strategic and challenging for low handicap golfers. By adding an additional forward tee, the course provides beginners and senior golfers a more fun golf experience. All of the courses are maintained at the highest level, while being good stewards of the resources and the environment. The Club has been Audubon Certified since 2008 and was recently recognized as “Trout Friendly” by the Wood River Land Trust.

Don’t Get Cold Feet By Mary Russo Rau

Advances in technology help us live comfortably in the modern world. Yes – technology is a beautiful thing. However, let's bring this concept home – literally. There are smart homes and smartphones, while Alexa has changed how we handle everything. However, let's talk about heating systems.

C

onsidered old-school, gas furnaces and electric forced air heating systems are yesterday’s news in the building trade. Necessary fans to better circulate warm air are noisy, add to heat costs, spread allergens, and dust. (ACHOO! Gesundheit!) Looking deeper, more traditional heating systems support ineffective heat distribution throughout multi-level homes. You know what I mean. The top floors can be uncomfortably hot, while lower levels will have you wearing extra layers to stay warm and cozy. Luckily, today’s emerging technology for radiant floor heat can ensure you don’t get cold feet. Introducing…CarbonicHeat floor heating systems – an innovative radiant floor heating system utilizing patented carbon film instead of traditional methods that depend on wire or tubing. With nanotechnology, the proprietary carbon film product supplies consistent heat across the floor. Say goodbye to cold or hot spots. Say hello to evenly distributed heat. You read that right! Being smarter means a more natural, cleaner, and efficient way to use less energy while obtaining more heat. With a lifetime warranty, LEED,

72

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

Intertek, and Energy Star certifications, the patented, thin, flat configuration is simple to install under traditional flooring and is quickly becoming the heat source of choice. HERE IS HOW IT ALL BEGAN… Well over ten years ago, Wood River Valley resident and entrepreneur Conrad Casser bought the company moving its headquarters to Hailey, Idaho. With worldwide rights for this unique product and patents in South Korea, China, U.S., Canada, and Europe, CarbonicHeat offers emerging technology focusing on U.S markets, expanding its share, sales team, and retail relationships. With a fully equipped warehouse, inventory, and production capability in Hailey, CarbonicHeat is co-owned and managed by Valley resident and fellow entrepreneur, Rick Ryerson. The company is thriving and giving the customers complete satisfaction with a heating alternative saving time and money. Streamlining the bidding process, Ryerson developed Carbonic Heat’s enterprise level software making the bidding and ordering process accurate, and

quick. “CarbonicHeat is a technology that solves the typical installation and operational concerns of radiant systems. Customers such as builders, electricians, architects, or homeowners respect and want a vendor on whom they can depend. This is what we provide,” states Ryerson. But, let’s take a step back and look at why CarbonicHeat is a strong competitor in heating. To understand and embrace the advantages of CarbonicHeat flooring heating systems, let’s explore more traditional types of radiant heat: hot water hydronic radiant floors and electric wire radiant floors. Simply stated, hydronic radiant floor systems create heat by pumping glycol from a boiler through tubing. Many of us have witnessed the time and care it takes for this tubing to be placed in concrete, under the subfloor between floor joists, or placed in sub-flooring with grooves. Electric systems consist of cables inserted in a plastic mat or stapled down individually. It is no wonder that these systems require raising the floor at least three-quarters of an inch or more while hydronic systems require ongoing maintenance and a separate mechanical room. Both methods can be expensive to install. ENTER CARBONICHEAT. CarbonicHeat provides a better, cleaner, and greener alternative eliminating duct loss and producing healthy Far-Infrared rays that feel just like the sun. For those with allergies or asthma, FarInfrared heat provides relief from the inescapable air born dust linked to traditional heating systems. While conventional electric radiant heat wires or tubes operate at 120 degrees, CarbonicHeat runs at about 85 degrees supporting an ambient room temperature 6-7 F lower than forced air heat. Warming the entire floor evenly, the heat remains low in the room and can be installed under all types of floorings: tile, concrete, wood, carpet, and laminates. CarbonicHeat can be used to melt snow from roof eaves, under driveways, sidewalks, and steps keeping these areas safe from ice and snow. With state-of-the-art technology, our product offers a thin six-layered film that is adaptable and incredibly easy and fast to install. It can be measured precisely by the proprietary digital process developed by Ryerson, and easily cut to order, and sent out in ready to install kits. “Our custom digital software overlays the floor plan so that the amount of material needed can be calculated not just quickly but accurately. Our customers greatly appreciate a quick response time,” states Ryerson. After installation, the system connects to a thermostat

“It’s reasonable to operate, totally silent, and the best heat source available with zero maintenance,” states Ryerson. customized for each zone. About two business cards thick, this breakthrough product carries a lifetime guarantee. Installation costs are competitively priced when compared to wire systems and may be more expensive than conventional heating systems. That said, CarbonicHeat is less costly to operate overall than other radiant heat systems saving money over time. All things considered, it’s more cost effective than other options. “It’s reasonable to operate, totally silent, and the best heat source available with zero maintenance,” states Ryerson. In summary, CarbonicHeat is a better choice when considering heating solutions. One hundred percent of the electricity is converted to heat, making it a greener, cleaner, and more effective heat solution. “When your feet are warm, you are warm,” Ryerson said. Architects, builders, and homeowners are repeatedly impressed with CarbonicHeat’s added value. “Whether new construction or a remodel, installation is quick and easy,” says Ryerson who whole-heartedly believes this emerging technology warms hearts and feet. Finding Solar Comfort R

By Dana DuGan

yan Allison kept noticing Sagebrush Solar trucks parked at the Wood River YMCA. Allison, the owner of the Wood River Inn & Suites in Hailey, had his interest sparked because he’d already begun greening-up the Inn. He wants to positively impact the environment and how people make choices about their own homes as well as travel choices. “The solar trucks got me thinking,” he said. “We’d done some changes already. We retro-fitted every bulb in the hotel with LED bulbs. I did 300 one day on my own. There are no fluorescents left inside the building. Or outside.” In fact, gone went the hotel’s cost for bulbs in its budget since each bulb has a 25-year warranty. This was a new concept for a man who has been around the hotel business for years. Allison’s family once owned the Tamarack Lodge in Ketchum, and built the Wood River Inn in 1998. He took over running the hotel more than a decade ago. In 2014, he moved with his family to the Wood River Valley from Seattle, where he operated a wine bar, Cellar 46 on Mercer Island. He had a vision to remake the Wood River Inn, located

on Hailey’s Main Street, into a boutique hotel. As with most hotels, a large portion of the operating budget is spent on energy. For that reason, Allison had recently installed energy-saving motion detector Verdant thermostats in every room. “Everything was running full blast all the time,” he said. “It now goes to a default. There has been a substantial energy reduction. Guests now walk into ambient rooms. Technology is helping us.” Next step. In spring 2017, Allison contacted Billy Mann, owner of Sagebrush Solar in Ketchum, which had recently merged with AltEnergy in Virginia. Previous installations have included the YMCA, the Ore Wagon Museum which helps to power Ketchum City Hall and numerous private homes in the valley. Things happened quite swiftly after that. The main hurdle was affordability. Mann says he is aware that for business owners and home owners, the largest barrier can be the up-front costs. But Mann makes it his mission to ensure his clients have options to fund their projects. New funding options – grants and impact investing – allow progress to be made with

“I was looking at every blue sky day thinking I’m losing money today.” He laughed. “But when the stars align it makes it easy.” homeowners who are leaning towards solar energy. Mann had previously done the solar system on a midvalley home owned by Kiki Tidwell and knew her also through the Sun Valley Institute, with whom he shares a common office area in Ketchum. Tidwell had done research on program-related investing, since she also manages a family foundation based in Hailey, the Tidwell Idaho Foundation, which seeks to promote rural economic development in Idaho through renewable energy adoption. Because the Wood River Inn project fell within those goals, the Foundation was able to loan money for the project at a below-market, low interest rate. It went down pretty quickly after that, Mann said. “We finished installing it in late summer. There are over 3,200 square feet of panels on this building now. The guys worked hard to do it. “Assuming snow completely covers the panels December through March, this solar system will offset about 40 percent of the Wood River Inn’s annual electricity demand and will save the Wood River Inn an average $7,800 per year in electrical costs over the next 25 years. If the roof is clear all winter, savings will be about 15 percent better.” Allison recalled his own impatience once he’d made the decision to go ahead with the installation. “I was looking at every blue sky day thinking I’m losing money today.” He laughed. “But when the stars align it makes it easy.” While Mann and his crew were creating the solar system, Allison kept at the other aspects of reimagining a green boutique hotel. Along with better quality materials used in each of the rooms, new beds and furniture, he

Installing the solar panels

changed the style of amenities available to travelers. There are now wall dispensers in the showers, smart TVs, alarm clocks with rechargers that reset if there’s an outage. There is no plastic anywhere. Everything is glass, ceramic or compostable. “It’s designed to reduce trash and save money,” Allison said. “This is the first in the Valley for green hotels. We’re trying to be market leaders, ahead of our competition. We house hundreds of skiers and hockey teams here. We serve a hot homemade breakfast and soup every day and we keep our rates competitive.” As the hotel rooms have been improved with linens and furnishings, guests seem to take better care of the room too, Allison said. Allison added that he wants to create awareness for green hotels and for making these kinds of changes in business. “There are a lot of people who can afford to do this; they just don’t know it,” he said. “Let’s put solar on our rental homes and our businesses. Let’s convert our energy needs into savings and reduce the $450 million that goes out of our economy each year to Idaho Power.” The tag team of environmental activists Allison and Mann are enthusiastic proponents of the investment strategy. “You can invest in systems somewhere even if it’s not your house and use those renewable energy credits for nonprofits or other business or organizations, which is what happened at the Y,” Mann explained. As an added bonus for guests at the Wood River Inn, there is a live streaming display in the lobby showing real time data of the 164 panels. “When someone sees that and thinks ‘if I turn my lights or TV off I can change what this is showing.’” Allison said. “They’ll take that home with them and do the same there.” Mann agrees. “It’s so important for people to think like this.” It’s why he does what he does and why people like Allison can help change the way people travel and what they take away from a visit; not just comfort and recreation, but thoughtful ideas on how to live better and in harmony with the earth.

Day Trip to Stanley

Photo: James Bourret

SNRA (Visitor Center)

Begin with a stop at the SNRA Visitor Center, about 8 miles north of Ketchum. The center is a great source of information with maps, flyers, and free audiotape tours. Further up is Galena Lodge, the starting point of hiking, biking, and cross-country trails, considered one of the best public trail systems in North America. Back on the road, you will begin the ascent to Galena Summit.

GALENA SUMMIT

Even locals can’t help but smile at the gorgeous view just over the top of Galena Summit. This is a must-stop for a view of the entire region including four mountain ranges, the small, curling creek of the Salmon headwaters, and high-altitude ranch lands that trace the river north.

ALTURAS & PETIT LAKES

Upon reaching the valley floor, pass the Smiley Creek Lodge and look for signs to Alturas and Petit lakes. This pristine string of glacial lakes hugs the mountains along the southwest side of the valley, offering a selection of day-use picnic areas, campgrounds, fishing streams, hiking trailheads, and boat ramps for enjoying the splendors of the Sawtooth Mountains. Alturas and Petit Lakes can be reached by car. For peaceful wilderness hiking set your sights on Alice, Toxaway, or Hell Roaring Lake. Dozens of well-marked and maintained trails are located all along Idaho Highway 75. Check your SNRA map to locate trailheads and other points of interest.

112

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

SMILEY CREEK LODGE

Smiley Creek is a beautiful spot on the Headwaters of the Salmon River. Stop by Smiley Creek Lodge and enjoy a burger. For road and trail conditions, it’s a good idea to make local inquiries at Smiley Creek, or the Stanley Ranger Station.

FISH HATCHERY

The Sawtooth Fish Hatchery is a fun stop for anyone interested in fish and wildlife. The viewing room provides opportunities to view steelhead trout from March to May and Chinook salmon throughout the year. The visitors’ center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. most days.

RANGER STATION

The Stanley Ranger Station, on a paved road to the west of Idaho Highway 75, is worth a stop, both for the information you can gather and for the view, particularly of Thompson Peak, the highest peak in the Sawtooths. If you borrowed one of the free audiotapes at the SNRA headquarters, this is the place to return it.

REDFISH LAKE

The queen of the lakes that lie along the base of the Sawtooths is Redfish Lake. At 4 miles long, it is the largest of the lakes and has the most developed facilities, including a Visitors’ Center, Redfish Lake Lodge, several campgrounds, a marina, horse corrals, a picnic area, and parking for the many hiking trails that start in the vicinity. The lodge has a store and café, as well as guest rooms and cabins. Redfish Lake is an extremely popular camping destination during the summer season, so reservations are advisable if you are interested in staying overnight.
