arry Peterson Jewelers (BPJ) on the corner of Sun Valley Road and East Avenue is a Sun Valley icon. Started almost 50 years ago by master jeweler Barry Peterson himself, this luxury jeweler has sold jewelry to all manner of visitors to the area. But while BPJ has always been synonymous with jewelry in the area, it has often been overlooked for its unique status as a manufacturing jeweler. A large shop on the second floor houses what could essentially be called a small jeweler. With room for six people to work, the space has two styles of 3D printer; a CAD cam mill that mills wax; a room for casting, polishing, and finishing jewelry; a laser welder; and a room for diamond cutting with a gem lab in it. After remodeling the show space in 2019, Barry’s workbench is now on the showroom floor, giving customers a peek behind-the-scenes of a jewelry manufacturer. This shop creates pieces for the store – about half the inventory in the shop was built on the premises – or to do custom jobs for people. Those jobs can range from jewelry being completely reinvented to making custom wedding bands to rebuilding or restoring inherited and estate jewelry. A manufacturing jeweler like BPJ is a rare find – so rare that Barry and 11 other manufacturing jewelers from Canada and the United States were recently featured in a national magazine; they are part of a small fraternity of manufacturing jewelers between the two countries. “There are a lot of jewelers out there, but not many that manufacture in-house,” says Peterson. “It’s rare to find somebody sitting on the floor working.” Such a rare skill warrants passing down, and luckily Peterson has several eager students within his own family: his stepdaughter, Brandy Rosenberg, who has worked in the jewelry industry for about 10 years, his daughter Katie Peterson, and son Alan Beaman. Beaman started apprenticing in fine jewelry manufacturing three years ago and has been working under Peterson’s tutelage operating the high-tech parts of the shop. A quick study, he has also picked up the basic rudiments of jewelry making in silver, gold, and platinum smithing. With skills and interests similar to Peterson’s and the support of the family, it seems certain that BPJ will remain in the family for years to come. F

Seeking Comfort By Amanda Adreani

or many of us, this strange moment in time has caused us to turn inward. To turn towards the people in our lives for stability and connection, to focus on our community and on helping the most vulnerable, to spend more time inside our homes for our health and safety, and to reflect on what our own lives had been and what they are and what they could be. And as the days grow shorter and the weather colder, we can turn inward to build coziness in our own home interiors. In many ways, this is a surreal moment, and for designer Arianne Heyser, she has seen firsthand how design trends have been affected as clients seek comfort. “I love that color is coming back into the design world,” she said. From bright throw pillows with tactile textures, to thick bedding with fringe, to unique accent lighting, to luxurious faux furs, people are understandably reaching for materials and color palettes that brighten their home as they continue to spend more time inside their own space. “People are hunkering down for winter in this pandemic-madness, and people are wanting something that brings a little light and happiness in their lives right now. And those are 4

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

Available at Topnotch

the things that are inspiring us.” Arianne and her small design team fill the Topnotch Fine Furnishings showroom with carefully-crafted vignettes, and change them up regularly, allowing for clients to be newly inspired with each visit. It is work that she is passionate about, and can continue to do safely during this time. When her 10-year-old daughter’s friends express admiration for Arianne’s work, telling her that her mom has “the coolest job,” her daughter is adorably quick to remind them that it is also “a really hard job.” Topnotch had been a family-run business for years, long before Arianne and her husband bought the business, and it continues to function that way. Her daughters take the bus from school straight to the showroom twice a week. “I think it’s nice for our kids to see that it’s not just pretty things,” she explains, “and to show them our hard work.” Their children get to see up close what it takes to run a business. The Topnotch team relishes getting to engage with customers in the showroom. “To see people get excited about their home and making it a little more enjoyable is a great feeling,” she says. The designers have especially enjoyed helping clients create new spaces within

their homes, as people adjust to meet the needs of their work and their families. And sometimes, when customers come into the showroom, they are inspired to purchase a piece for someone else in their life. Arianne says that is something so beautiful about the mountain town, especially during this time, where people are “supporting each other” and “doing things for others out of the kindness of their heart.” F

SUN VALLEY

WINTER/SPRING 2021 Dear Readers, As I travel through the Valley checking on clients who have often become friends, I am reminded that there is nothing so constant as change itself. This time last year, it was taken for granted that we could shop, dine out, ride the chair lifts with strangers, work side-by-side with fellow co-workers, send kids to classrooms and simply enjoy a cup of coffee in a crowded coffee house. Our everyday concerns had nothing to do with whether we were risking our health simply by sharing close proximity with others. We all feel the effects of the virus, either through actually having contracted it or simply by witnessing its wrath. But I am heartened every time I walk into one of our local businesses and see, the one constant is that we keep on keeping on. We wear masks as if it were the normal thing to do and we forge ahead, knowing that eventually life will return to better days. The healing of our community and nation will be truly worth celebrating. Please support your local businesses and be kind to our 1st responders and neighbors.

The Skin Ski

REVOLUTION By Jim Santa

In this time of social distancing and with a trend towards more exercise and improved health, the sport of cross-country skiing is seeing resurgent growth.

H

ere in the Wood River Valley we are fortunate to be blessed with some of the finest cross-country skiing terrain and grooming found anywhere in the world. Cross-country skiing is divided into two distinct disciplines, kick and glide or “classic”, and skating or “freestyle”. This article will focus on the types of skis used for the classic technique. Up to this point we’ve had essentially two choices for classic, kick and glide, skiing. These choices were either traditional, waxable, skis or “no-wax” skis. On a

22

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

waxable ski a sticky “grip” wax is applied underfoot. The idea is for the snow crystals to penetrate the wax and provide purchase for the kick. With proper waxing nothing beats the performance of a waxable ski, but getting it right is not easy. Missing the wax might either mean you have poor or no grip, or you end up with a clump of ice stuck to your wax which sends you careening over the handlebars. Getting it right takes time and experience as well as an investment in a variety of waxes for various temperatures and snow conditions. Back in the beginning of my ski industry career, (it wasn’t intended to be lifelong), “no-wax” skis were just beginning to hit the market. The first no-wax skis I recall were from a brand named Trak. They had a fish scale pattern molded into the base of the ski that provided grip without wax, a wonderful convenience when time and wax knowledge was a consideration. While they provided ample grip in most conditions, glide was typically sacrificed for the convenience of these no-wax skis. While there has been continuous improvements, the performance has never really been on par with a properly waxed ski. ENTER THE SKIN SKI REVOLUTION! Not since Bill Koch lit a fire to the cross-country race world in the early 1980’s using the skate technique have we seen more rapid evolution in ski technology and manufacturing or more enthusiasm amongst cross-country ski enthusiasts. Skins have been used for ascending hills on Alpine Touring/Backcountry skis for years. They are called skins because they resemble sealskin, from which the first ski skins were made. These days’ skins are typically a Synthetic Mohair or Mohair/Nylon blend. The fibers are angled towards the tail of the ski and are designed to let the ski slide forward on the snow but not backwards. In Alpine Touring these skins have a glue to adhere them to the base of the ski for climbing and the skins are then peeled off and stashed in a pack for the descent. In the cross-country application these skins are more permanently glued into a milled out area in the kick zone of

the base as they are not designed to be removed from the ski. They may however be removed for replacement when worn. THE IDEA OF SKIN SKIS IS NOT A NEW INVENTION. Skin skis were already popular in the late 70’s and early 80’s, but they never reached critical mass, primarily because ski production at the time was not sophisticated enough. Over the years, the ski manufacturing process developed and major advances have been made in ski construction allowing skins to return, and now all major Nordic ski makers have jumped on the bandwagon, and more skin-ski models are becoming available every year. So why all the buzz and what really makes these skin skis so impressive? The synthetic mohair that makes up the skin is especially good at gripping in icy conditions where traditional no-wax skis might slip. Skin skis also excel in warmer snow where the dreaded “ice clump” might form on the base of a traditional ski.

So in today’s world, cross-country skiing has become much more user friendly for recreational skiers as there are so many wax-free options and skin skis to choose from. With the exception of racing, old fashioned waxing seems to be passé for most. And the skin ski has proven to offer better performance in terms of both grip and glide in most conditions than traditional no-wax models. They are much quieter than the traditional no-wax ski. My first pair of Trak skis had a fish scale pattern from tip to tail which “hummed” as you went downhill, you could gauge your speed, which wasn’t very fast, as the hum became higher pitched as your speed increased. And finally, a good pair of skin skis needs practically no maintenance except for occasional “cleaning” of the skins and glide waxing which may generally be accomplished with easy application liquid waxes. So, skin skis are certainly worth checking out if you want a carefree approach to your skiing hobby, and we have demo skis available at Sturtevant’s. Check them out soon and enjoy your skiing! Winter Flyfishing IN SUN VALLEY

By Bryant Dunn

©2019

W

hen winter arrives in Sun Valley, all eyes turn upward to the snowy slopes of Bald Mountain. Town bustles with excited skiers and snowboarders. Shoppers wander the streets stocking up for holiday giftgiving and locals and visitors alike share the vibe that only new snowfall and the promise of powder snow can bring. For many, however, it is the recreational option at the foot of America’s first ski resort that demands primary attention. After all, wintertime also offers amazing flyfishing for those equipped to handle the cold and snowy days along the banks of the Big Wood River. The Wood, as local fishermen refer to the crystal clear freestone stream, offers excellent flyfishing for rainbow trout and a handful of brown trout along its 30 some miles of meandering riffles, runs and pockets. Although wet fly fishing with mayfly and stonefly nymphs and midge and caddis pupae tends to be most effective during the bulk of the wintry months, dry fly fishing, especially with minute black and white midge patterns also known as snowflies, can be superb during the warming, late-season months of February and March. In fact, many local anglers prefer the fishing in winter due to the absence of large crowds of fishermen and the seemingly endless river miles left empty for those motivated to explore them. “Winter is one of my favorite times to flyfish and guide on the Big Wood,” offered Mark Belanger, Head Fishing Guide for Sun Valley Outfitters. “I often have the river to myself and my guests love the peace, quiet and productivity of fishing this time of year. The key is to be equipped

26

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

with cold weather gear and be prepared for lower temperatures.” Warm hats, fingerless gloves, fleece pants and long underwear, particularly wool products, are all necessities when fishing in the winter. Waders, felt soled wading boots and polarized sunglasses complete the list and a five weight rod with floating line is most commonly recommended for fishing on local rivers. For those with more time or motivation, the Big Lost River, South Fork of the Boise or Silver Creek are also excellent fisheries which can be accessed from the Sun Valley area. Local flyshops can provide guides and transportation to these rivers which is likely to increase hook ups throughout the angling day. Guide services can also supply lunches on request and the various tackle and flies that will give anglers the best chance at success. Among knowledgeable flyfishermen, the greater Sun Valley area is considered one of America’s finest flyfishing regions. The rivers and lakes of this area were favorite haunts of such celebrities such as Gary Cooper and Ernest Hemingway who spent countless days exploring the region with flyrods in hand. “There is a great history to Sun Valley, not just in the world of skiing but also in the realm of flyfishing,” continued Belanger. “Montana gets more attention but that is probably why, on any given day around Sun Valley, it feels like you have the entire river to yourself.” With such an amazing natural resource readily available, perhaps travelers would be wise to insert a flyrod into their ski bags the next time they visit. New snowfall or not, trout are always anxious to take a fly on the Big Wood river which just might lead to the highlight of a wintertime vacation in world-famous Sun Valley. F

“OUR BOULDER, YOUR BACKYARD” is the rallying cry for the 2021 Zions Bank Boulder Mountain Tour

I

February 1-7, 2021

n place of the traditional race in Ketchum, Idaho, participants will ski a 30k or 15k course of their choice in a location that is convenient for them. Courses will be suggested at various areas and resorts in 10 regions throughout the United States. Times will be submitted by racers for posting on the BMT Leaderboard and prize categories, which will be awarded on a daily basis throughout the week. The week of skiing culminates with an awards celebration via live stream, where raffle winners will be announced, and BMT champs will be acknowledged. The cost to “Rock the Boulder” is $39 for adults, $25 for 18-under and $125 for teams of four. The entry fee includes an official 2021 BMT race hat by SWIX, raffle entry, sponsored items, BMT collateral and a general training plan geared to novice, intermediate and advanced skiers. Your participation stokes the fire and future of a 48-year-old event that is a winter mainstay in the Wood River Valley. Sign up at skireg.com/bouldermountaintour. The Boulder Mountain Tour, sponsored by Zions Bank, believes in the power and passion of nonprofit organizations performing vital work during these difficult days. To this end, the BMT will expand its “Ski It Forward” award through donations to 10 regional nonprofit organizations throughout the United States. Racers from that region will vote on the charity of their choice via registration box. The organizations receiving the most votes will receive donations at the culmination of the BMT.

A Family Affair By Hayden Seder

T

he Wood River Valley has an abundance of businesses that go back generations. After the COVID pandemic hit the area, businesses struggled but ultimately came through strong, in no small part owing to the strong connections in the community. For some families in business here, they chose this town, coming to Sun Valley as the first in their family to do so. For others, this town chose them and they grew into the business started by their families generations ago. The McGarys, the Unsers and the Lloyd families are but just a few examples of how a family makes it work in business in Sun Valley.

Blessing of the Bear / Dave McGary

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

The McGarys Mother/daughter duo Molly and Bronwyn McGary opened their boutique bridal shop, The Manor House, in October 2019. Despite the pandemic and weddings being canceled or pushed back, things haven’t slowed down much for the McGary’s – after all, brides still need dresses even for postponed or smaller nuptials.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO SUN VALLEY? MOLLY: We’ve been coming up here for about 14 years. We had a vacation home up here. We actually came to the Valley and moved here primarily because my husband, Dave McGary was a sculptor. He was represented by the Kneeland Gallery and then we opened an art gallery here for a few years before he got sick. He passed away 7 years ago. We owned an art gallery in Scottsdale for 27 years and after his passing, my daughter and I decided we were going to start thinking about what we wanted to do. Our primary reason and love of this area is fly fishing and hiking and the mountains. We live in midValley on the river and that’s how we spend our evenings and weekends: on the river fishing. I don’t do it as much anymore but Bronwyn does and my husband was passionate about flyfishing and the mountains; he grew up in Cody, Wyoming so this felt very much like home to him. That’s really why Bronwyn and I wanted to come up here because this has been our family happy place, a place where we can come and escape the desert and the heat and enjoy the mountains. WHY START A BRIDAL STORE? MOLLY: This has always been an interest of mine. My husband and I celebrated our engagement in Paris and when we there, I kind of got the bug for thinking about doing this because I bought my wedding gown in Paris. We were focused on his work for many, many years. Then Bronwyn graduated from college last May and didn’t want to live in Arizona anymore and asked if we could move up to Idaho full-time. I said yes and I decided I wanted to do this project up here instead of Arizona. We started looking for spaces and investigating what lines we wanted to carry. We realized quickly that there was a void here. There’s a huge wedding industry here but people are having to travel to Boise, Twin Falls, Idaho Falls or Seattle to get their dresses. We just knew there was an incredible wedding destination market here.

Bronwyn and Molly McGary

WHAT’S IT LIKE WORKING TOGETHER AS A FAMILY? MOLLY: For years my husband was a sculptor, and so we had our own business and gallery and were used to working together as a family. For me to come up here and for Bronwyn to be willing to help me was huge. BRONWYN: I knew mom wanted to start this journey and I told her that she’s always supported me and been by my side through everything and said, this is your dream so let’s tackle it now and let’s do it together. I’m surprised at how much I’ve enjoyed it, being a part of the bridal business and also running our own business. It’s been a great experience and learning curve. MOLLY: Conceptually, I think this business grew from my dream but now it’s turning into Bronwyn’s. She brings a young, fresh approach to things that I don’t. It’s been awesome to work with Bronwyn, to be able to work closely with her everyday and be in this creative environment. BRONWYN: Mom and I work really well together, we’ve always been really close. We respect each other and communicate and throw ideas back and forth. SUN VALLEY SOURCE

The Unsers

The Unser family is practically synonymous with racecar driving: the current patriarch, Johnny, is a former racecar driver and currently a driver coach and advisor to the Mazda Road to Indy, racing advisor and spokesman for Cooper Tire, official for Indycar in Race Control and the owner of Unser Racing, Karting, and Entertainment track in Denver. Johnny’s father, cousins, and uncles are all known in the racing industry – the family has a total of nine Indy 500 victories. Continuing the legacy now is Johnny and wife Shauna’s 22-year-old daughter Loni, a Sun Valley native who races in the world racing league series while also attending college full-time. WHAT BROUGHT THE UNSER FAMILY TO SUN VALLEY? JOHNNY: We moved here in 1984. Shauna’s parents had a condo in Sun Valley and so Shauna came here since the early ‘70s. SHAUNA: I was super young when we came here and I fell in love with it, typical story. From that time on, I just loved the area and wanted to move here at some point. We were from California. John and I got married and we thought, well, let’s go, let’s move. I guess the rest is history. 34

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

Loni, Johnny and Shauna Unser

WHAT WAS IT ABOUT SUN VALLEY THAT MADE YOU WANT TO STAY? SHAUNA: I love the mountains, outdoor activities, and fresh air. I don’t think there’s anything more beautiful than seeing these mountains on a full moon. JOHNNY: For me, it’s the outdoors. I never did like the cities, I came from a small town in northern California called Sutter Creek. I never wanted to think about living anywhere else since I first came here. I still love it today, I travel a lot and every time I come home I’m just grateful that we live here. LONI, HOW DO YOU THINK GROWING UP IN SUN VALLEY HAS INFLUENCED YOU? LONI: Growing up, it was all about the outdoors and spending a lot of time on the ski team (SVSEF). I was a part of the Alpine Team up until high school and then in high school I transitioned to the Cross-Country team and it taught me a lot about hard work; being in the outdoors is not easy and skiing is not easy. Also, that small town vibe gave me great connections with people and I think that’s carried on into the rest of my life, having those life-long connections and valuing a small town. Also respecting our outdoors. DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW YOU WANTED TO GO INTO THIS FAMILY LINE OF WORK?

LONI: I always loved it and I traveled to my dad’s races when I was little. I kind of knew I wanted to, but growing up in Sun Valley, we’re not close to as many things. I got into as many activities as I could: skiing, running crosscountry, swimming, being competitive in any way I can. When I was a senior in high school my parents gave me the opportunity to go to a driving school because car control is important in a ski town with it snowing. I was hooked and it’s blossomed from there. JOHNNY: I didn’t really want her to race, I know how

tough it is to be successful and what a tough sport it is, especially for a girl in a man’s world. It’s not something that you want to take lightly. In racing, there are way more failures and disappointments than there are those good days when you win races. But with the desire and determination that she’s had and the talent she showed early on, I couldn’t hardly say no and since then we’ve really supported her every way we can. It’s nice for her to have that family history and knowledge. Like any family business, it’s something passed down from generation to generation.

The Lloyds

Lloyd Construction officially opened in 1977 though founder John Lloyd was working in construction long before that. What started as a mom-and-pop operation out of the family garage for him and wife Carolyn Lloyd has now become son David’s operation. Born and raised in Ketchum, David joined the company full-time in 2000, becoming President and Construction Manager of this family operation. Carolyn still works in the front office and John still helps with certain side projects such as helping grandsons Thijs, 9, and Cody, 7, build a half-pipe. WHAT’S THE ORIGIN STORY OF LLOYD CONSTRUCTION? DAVID: My father grew up in Boise and he always did construction-type projects. When he moved here in the ‘60s, 36

he was heavily involved in building the Elkhorn condos. He got into a position where he thought, I can do better than that. He started to work on projects on the side and it morphed into a full-scale mom-and-pop operation. At the same time, he was working for the Forest Service in the winter as a snow ranger and managing heli ski operations. He also worked for ski patrol through the ‘60s and ‘70s. I have an older sister and a younger brother, so he started phasing out those other lines of work so he could afford to keep shoes on our feet. He worked out of our family house; our garage never functioned as a normal family garage. Those first couple years when we built a couple houses for ourselves, I’d be sweeping the floors and generally trying to help and watching my father work. DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW YOU WOULD END UP WORKING FOR YOUR PARENTS’ COMPANY? DAVID: I grew up with a real blue-collar work ethic. It

was recognized growing up in the family that we had to contribute. I scrapped out the job sites, sweeping the floors, picking up pieces of wood. My earliest memories are doing that with my father nights and weekends and after school. Working with my father in an official capacity was first done when I was around 10 or 11 years old. I would work a couple hours a week, but it morphed around the age of 13 into working in the summers. I was basically a full-fledged carpenter by the time I was 17 or 18. I worked with really tough characters that shaped my personality, people that were interested in humbling me. I remember people nailgunning my shoe to a board or getting bananas in my tail pipe and dead squirrels on my engine block – all kinds of crazy antics. I basically worked from the age of 13-18 fulltime summers and then went off to school.

WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE (BUSINESS-WISE AND PERSONALLY) THROUGH COVID? DAVID: Personally, I think we all have a responsibility to live our best lives. For myself and my family, we just chose activities that were safe and responsible and went at that 100%. A lot of that meant just being closer with each other, a lot of time in the mountains. My kids had a goal this summer to climb the five tallest mountains in the five local ranges – the Sawtooths, Pioneers, White Clouds, Smokys, and Boulders – which was over-the-top difficult for us. Business-wise, business was and continues to be a daily and weekly check-in to make sure that we’re doing right by all people that are affected by our actions. If you really care for your employees, vendors, trade contractors, and community at-large, it’s not binary; it’s a lot of work and it’s tiring. F SUN VALLEY SOURCE

Multigenerational wealth, how to keep it together and preserve your legacy

By Kristin Hovencamp

O

ver the years, I have often heard the refrain: “Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations.” The statement implies the negative outcome of dissipating family wealth is likely to ensue by the third generation. Attrition is high as assets pass from the wealth creators to beneficiaries. In compiling research for their book, PREPARING HEIRS: Five Steps to a Successful Transition of Family Wealth and Values, Roy Williams and Vic Preisser found only 30% of family assets are preserved following wealth transfer from one generation to the next. The authors discovered wealth is gone by the end of the fourth generation 90% of the time. Their analysis concluded, “The main cause of unsuccessful transfers of wealth isn’t financial management or investment performance, it’s poor communication and heir preparation.”

40

SUN VALLEY SOURCE

How can you sustain the past generation’s legacy, leave your mark on the present, and successfully pass wealth to future generations? DOCUMENT YOUR PAST. 5th generation, New York Times bestselling author Susan Cheever, daughter of Pulitzer Prize recipient and author, John Cheever suggests documenting a family’s history to create a bond between past and future generations. “Children need a connection to their ancestors to appreciate who they are and where they are from,” says the younger Cheever. INVEST THE TIME. Not by chance, the Kilpatrick/Purdy family has grown on a generational basis through incredibly hard work and a deep appreciation of their ancestry. Early on, they recognized the link between intergenerational connections and the sustainability of

Today, the world recognizes Bud and Nick Purdy’s legacy as Silver Creek Preserve, a world-class fly-fishing destination, and conservation easement. Donated to the Nature Conservancy in 1995, it is still maintained and shared by the family. SHARING EXPERIENCES OF STRUGGLES AND SUCCESSES BUILDS CONNECTIONS AND FAMILY TRADITIONS. To leave an enduring legacy, families will want to educate heirs about prior generations. What did those earlier generations accomplish? What sacrifices did family members experience in the creation of the family’s wealth? You might use a family tree to bring your ancestors to life and convey the value of ritual. DEVELOP A SHARED CHARITABLE VISION. By creating a giving plan, families are clearly explaining their philanthropic views to each generation. Families adopting long-term perspectives are using philanthropy to prepare heirs for the onus of financial responsibility. Establishing a family office and a donor advised fund or a private foundation can also assist in the continuity of family engagement. Involving children in charitable endeavors at an early age allows them to feel they are a significant part of family decisions. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE FOR INCREASING FINANCIAL LITERACY. Financial education is critical when preparing family members to inherit wealth. You can ease concerns by bringing each generation together and acquainting them with the appropriate advisors to address practical wealth planning essentials. Some universities offer formal programs designed to prepare high-net-worth families to transition wealth. Classes and workshops include developing the necessary skills to oversee financial professionals, ensure accountability, and pursue appropriate results.

wealth. In 1882, Bud Purdy’s grandfather founded his family homestead, today a 12,000-acre cattle ranch. Bud left a historic family legacy and communicated his vision and values to his son Nick to carry on the tradition. Nick recalls his father saying, “We’d like to see it stay a ranch. Keep it in the family and pass it on to the next generation.”

KEEP RELATIONSHIPS HEALTHY AND EFFECTIVE BY INSTITUTING A FORMAL COMMUNICATION PLAN. Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw said it best, “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” An ideal plan involves all generations, not just senior members. Ensure decisions are made as a family by establishing off-site family meetings, hold formal family discussions, and have everyone buy into a shared plan of action. To continually build trust, families will want to have open and honest communication about wealth and values at every age. Successful families use a combination of documenting generational history, memorializing values and traditions, philanthropy, financial education, and communication to transfer wealth over time. F

Love Connection

JESS AND FRANK

H

aving grown up in Ketchum, Frank has always had a strong connection to the Valley, and it didn’t take much to convince fiancée Jess, an Australian-Canadian he’d met 3 years prior in California to lock in his childhood home as their wedding spot. With avid skiers as parents, Jess too grew up with a love for the mountains, and as both

she and Frank’s fathers shared an affinity for golf, The Valley Club seemed a perfect choice – a cozy, romantic and indoor/outdoor venue with a spectacular backdrop of the mountains. Although a winter wedding may come as a shock to some, close friends and family were not surprised to receive a February 23rd wedding invite for the snow-loving couple, who have skied the Powder Highway, Japan and numerous North American resorts together, and have never missed a ski season in their lives. The weather did not disappoint, with chillier than usual temps, but gorgeous low lighting and a dusting of snow kicking the ethereal vibes up a notch. Jess is forever grateful to her family, friends and bridesmaids for braving the 14° photoshoot. With guests coming from the far reaches of the globe, from Australia and Canada to Scotland and across the United States, the day represented much of their backgrounds and love of nature. Jess paid homage to her Aussie roots through a stunning array of gold, burgundy and sage Australian native blooms in her bouquets and flower crown, complemented by eucalyptus on tables and down the aisle. The craft cocktails, the Sydneysider Gin fizz and the Sun Valley Manhattan, represented their international connection, and the best part of the day, according to Jess and Frank, was having friends and family from all over the globe sharing laughter, stories, dances, drinks and revelry, in celebration of love and connection. he invitations were addressed, stuffed and stamped, the only thing left to do was to mail them. What turned into mailing in early April for a July wedding, became early May, then finally the day came when Sarah and Chad made the tough decision to not mail them at all. Unfortunately, their “datadriven approach” to managing a wedding during a pandemic became more than a numbers game and concluded that their big Trail Creek wedding would be too risky. Rather than postpone, Sarah and Chad decided to have a small family ceremony three hours away in Rexburg at Sarah’s family ranch. Amazingly, the team of Sun Valley vendors agreed to make this new vision come to life. Despite the extra mileage, Amanda Seaward, Dev Khalsa and Tara Matteson didn’t want to miss it. On the wedding day, Sarah enjoyed a relaxing morning of pampering with the ladies, while Chad fished with the boys. Two hours before the ceremony, an incredibly dramatic storm blew

through. Thankfully, the storm cleared just in time for the ceremony, creating a gorgeous colorful sky that only dusk after a storm can deliver. While everyone gathered to kick-off the evening with craft cocktails and delicious hors d’oeuvres, Sarah met Chad for first look photos in the meadow. After photos, Sarah and Chad rejoined the group before all departed for the ceremony site in a WWII Swiss Pinzgauer – a last minute addition from a family friend – that was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The ceremony took place next to the river in a field full of thistles with a beautiful alter by Tara Bella Flowers, four wooden benches and the couple’s Airstream. Sarah and Chad’s brother-inlaw, Jack, beautifully officiated and had everyone in tears. After the vows were exchanged and the newly married couple walked down the aisle, the family celebrated with champagne waiting for them at the Airstream. A delicious dinner reception followed, complete with toasts, plenty of wine and a nod to the original Trail Creek wedding complete with a wedding cake from Konditorei. F

ood is the ultimate touchstone to supporting our bodies. From the moment we are born getting nutrition is analogous with feeling safe and healthy. So, in a time where much of our lives feels uncertain and health in general is such a gift, what can we do to better use the food in our lives? How can we adopt practices of eating that gives us confidence in our immune systems, and gives our communities the fortitude to last the long winter that has been this pandemic? The key to boosting your immune system is to become both knowledgeable about the source of your foods, and to discriminate what you put in your mouth. Let’s start with nourishing bone broth; a healing hybrid of stock and broth. Bone broth is rich in cartilage, collagen, and healing amino acids. These elements can provide protection and support for our immune systems during an age of epidemics, chronic diseases and a pandemic that has been massively disruptive to our modern world.
