Centenary Season
The Flame Still Burns
100 Years The Flame Still Burns
A Brief History of the Theatre On 20th January 1914, in the glow of oil lamps, the first meeting proper was held in the new headquarters, a cellar, loaned free of charge, of a shop belonging to Mr Jack Byrom on Kingsway in Altrincham town centre. The rules were agreed and the name was to be Altrincham Garrick Society and so it all began.

Be My Baby
In the following weeks many things happened, culminating in a whist drive and dance which was held to celebrate 90 members joining. On 17th February 1914 the first rehearsal of the very first play, ‘The Silver Box’ by John Galsworthy took place and on Wednesday 18th March 1914 the first production of the Altrincham Garrick Society opened at the Public Hall in Altrincham. Having no home of its own to speak of, other than the cellar and rooms on Kingsway, the Garrick travelled around the district performing their major productions in halls and school rooms which they hired. Hugely successful each venue now had to be chosen on size rather than particular suitability to fit in the ever increasing audience. Many plays were (and still are) presented for the first time on the amateur stage and some plays at this time were presented for the first time on any stage. All this was taking place to the backdrop of a looming World War which finally curtailed the society’s activities until hostilities ceased, although small productions and one act plays continued in the cellar rooms throughout, maybe a forerunner of our currently successful Lauriston Studio theatre. In 1920 the Garrick tried to persuade George Bernard Shaw to let them produce ‘Major Barbara’ without paying royalties. A postcard reply from him was received suggesting that the Garrick should become a Repertory Theatre with the actors being paid. This suggestion put ideas into the heads of our members and the consequent payment of salaries to the cast of ‘Major Barbara’ and the press-gang collection which followed it, resulted in the formation of the Building Fund and laid the very first foundations of our Playhouse.

100 Years The Flame Still Burns
Continued... 1926 was a very special year for the society; for it was in this year we were given a plot of land on Barrington Road, Altrincham to build a theatre of our own. Initially given anonymously by a member, it soon leaked out that the land had been purchased and donated by A. P. Hill, a founder member, who had worked tirelessly towards the goal of a theatre in its own grounds in the heart of Altrincham. We will always remain eternally grateful to him for this most generous of gifts. Raising money now to build the theatre was of prime importance from this time on and many schemes and ventures, too numerous to name were used to raise the necessary funds. One scheme I will mention though because of its huge success was the Buy a Brick campaign. The idea being, to sell bricks to be used in the building of the theatre for 2d, the old currency before decimalisation. This was not only supported by the growing membership but also by the public at large and I suppose heralded the arrival, in time to come, of a community theatre for Altrincham and district.

1931 - Barrington Road - building begins
On 14th July 1931, Jack Byrom cut the first sod at Barrington Road and building began. Fund raising began apace now to make sure there was enough money in the kitty to finish the job. This, after many trials and tribulations became a reality on October 1st 1932 when the new Playhouse opened its doors for the first time with the play ‘The Immortal Lady’ by Clifford Bax, a world premier. A ballot had to be held for the tickets on the first night, as there were now 1,500 members and only 500 seats. Press coverage was enormous, from local and city papers, and as far afield as London and Southampton. From this point on the society grew in stature and was well regarded as a theatre of excellence not only in amateur circles but professional also, as it is today.

This side-splitting play needs no introduction to Garrick regulars as it’s a smash hit every time we perform it. Unashamedly politically incorrect, this hilarious comedy transports us to riotous antics at the wedding of Deirdre and Mark. The fun begins on the stag night when an inebriated Mark is chained to a lamppost with a blow-up rubber doll. The wedding itself is hysterical too, with half the guests, including the priest, suffering blinding hangovers. If you delight in comic chaos and a night of high-spirited farce...this is the play for you.

However, Gilbert's "pointed" satire and punning oneliners abound, there are plenty of topsyturvy plot complications, and many believe that the score is Sullivan's finest. 100 Years - The Flame Still Burns The War Years
Rydell High's spirited class of '59 …. gum-chewing, hub-cap-stealing, hot-rod loving boys with D.A.s and leather jackets and their wise-cracking girls in teased curls, bobby sox, and pedal pushers-capture the look and sound of the 1950s in a rollicking musical that salutes the rock 'n' roll era. While hip Danny and wholesome Sandy resolve the problems of their mutual attraction for each other, the gang sings and dances its way through such nostalgic scenes as the pyjama party, the prom, the burger palace, and the drive-in movie. Too many unforgettable songs to mention – Grease is STILL the word!
By 1939 at the outbreak of World War II membership stood at 1,900 with a waiting list of 292. All plans for the 1939/40 season were cancelled and the theatre was handed over to a professional company for the duration of the war. The society reopened its doors again in October 1945 and has never closed since except for a few months in 1998/9 during the refurbishment. Throughout all the remaining years I suppose you could say it has been business as usual. We have had our ups and downs, good times and bad but somehow we have always managed to pull through mainly due to the ever changing but loyal bank of volunteer members upon whom we have always relied.

Hitchcock Blonde by Terry Johnson Wed 12th to Sat 15th March 7:30pm Tickets for The Lauriston Theatre Adults £7.50 Concessions £6.50 A media lecturer and his female protege find some deteriorated Hitchcock footage. It would appear they had discovered some early rushes but what film were they for and who is the mysterious blonde? Hitchcock Blonde is not a play about Alfred Hitchcock, though he may make a cameo appearance. Designed and Directed by Barry Purves
HITCHCOCK BLONDE 100 Years - The Flame Still Burns Expansion in the 50's The Houghton Weavers consist of Tony Berry who is the group’s lead singer and front man, David Littler on Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin and Vocals, and Steve Millington who adds Keyboards, Guitar, Bass, Banjo, Ukulele, Mandolin, Accordion and Vocals to the group’s sound. Together they entertain their audiences with humorous jokes and antidotes and sing “popular” folk songs from raucous traditional songs to beautiful ballads done in their own inimitable style.
1953 saw the Queen’s coronation and with it came the introduction of television into many homes for the first time. Over the years this began to effect the size of the audiences and a decision was made to change from being a membership only theatre to one which was also open to the public. A coffee bar opened under the foyer and in the early 60’s it also became a licensed bar. A rehearsal room was added at the rear of the theatre to be called The Jubilee Room in honour of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee and is now The Lauriston Studio Theatre.

When the independent minded Elizabeth Bennett meets the enigmatic Mr Darcy, her opinions on marriage are profoundly tested. Can he overcome his pride and she her prejudice to make an ideal match in a society where social standing outweighs personal feeling? Critics describe Janet Munsil’s adaptation as ‘Funny, fierce, romantic...undeniably engaging’.

Real Diamond The Neil Diamond Tribute Show
Thursday 27th March 7.30pm Tickets: £20.00 Roy Chubby Brown returns with his bluest show yet! He’s still rude, he’s still crude and this time he’s turning headlines into punch lines as his rip-roaring brand of banter continues to burst bellies across the country.
Chubby doesn’t hold back from sharing his outlandish views on news, women and gender, sailing so close to the mark, even the most seasoned of fans will be left gobsmacked! As politically incorrect as ever ‘The World’s Most Outrageous Comedian’ is far too rude for TV, so this live performance is the only place to catch the flamboyant comedian! IF EASILY OFFENDED PLEASE STAY AWAY!
Friday 28th March 7.30pm Tickets: £19.00 John Hylton has performed his Neil Diamond tribute show now for 22 years. With 7 talented musicians from Africa and Europe, Real Diamond play the “Oldies” like Soolaimon, Kentucky Woman and Cracklin’ Rosie…as they were back in the 60’s…. the favourites, Sweet Caroline, Beautiful Noise and Forever in Blue Jeans, that we all love to sing along with and, of course, Neils passionate songs, Play Me, Love on the Rocks and I am….I said.
When we say, John Hylton truly sounds like Neil, you may doubt that. As you leave the show, you will most certainly say, “I’m a Believer”

The Art of Coarse Acting by Michael Green Wednesday 23rd to Saturday 26th April 7.30pm Adults £7.50 Concessions £6.50 Green describes a coarse actor as one who can remember his lines, but not the order in which they come. Often the scenery will fall down. Invariably his tights will fall down. Ages can vary from young to the practically senile. The three plays are presented as parodies of dramatic styles, in the performance of which everything which can conceivably go wrong in a production does, but the Coarse Actors struggle gamefully on throughout. Directed by Nick Johnson
Beautifully costumed and choreographed for each decade, performed by 'West End' and international vocalists, along with the stunning 'Memory Lane' dancers. Based on the original show from 2010, with a host of new songs and costumes.

100 Years - The Flame Still Burns Recent History
1998 Heralded the arrival of the theatre you see today. In spite of all the hard work of 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and the efforts of everyone concerned in keeping alive the original idea of live theatre in Altrincham, the old place was looking tired. A huge fund raising scheme was set in place to enable us to apply for a grant from the Lottery Commission. Once the funds were raised we applied a number of times and finally we were successful. 1999 was the beginning of the new Garrick era. In October we opened our doors for the first time to a completely refurbished modern theatre and have never looked back. Of course there is always plenty to do and not enough people to do it but we are still here 100 years later. The Flame Still Burns and long may it do so, perhaps for another 100 years.

THE LAURISTON STUDIO THEATRE The Lauriston Studio is the Altrincham Garrick’s award winning studio theatre. Seating only 49 people, it is an extremely intimate and stimulating theatre space that has become a fully integral part of the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse. Following the generous donation of some tiered, retractable seating by The Lauriston Trust, the newly christened Lauriston Studio was officially opened to the public in October 2006 with a memorable production of ‘Two’ by Jim Cartwright. Since then The Lauriston Studio has produced many exciting and cutting edge productions and has won awards for the quality of work produced there. It greatly expands Altrincham Garrick Playhouse’s creative repertoire
by strongly encouraging community theatre and contemporary theatre arts in the North West and also in helping local writers develop brand new plays. The Lauriston Studio is also used extensively by GAPA – The Garrick Academy of Performing Arts. This helps to generate an important and creative ‘breeding ground’, not only for the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse, but also for the wider community of South Manchester, as children and young adults develop their acting and technical skills and gain vital experience in an intimate and professionally set-up theatre space. For actors, directors, technical staff and audiences alike, it is an exhilarating alternative theatre experience. We feel that The Lauriston Studio is easily the ‘second’ best theatre in Altrincham so why not come and find out for yourself?

GAPA
THE GARRICK ACADEMY OF PERFORMING ARTS
The Garrick Academy of Performing Arts, or GAPA as it’s known run classes to train and develop the performance skills of our students and give them a theatre grounding to give them general confidence, develop their love of performing or support them should they wish to eventually work on the professional stage - as a number of our students have and are.
The teaching year is split into three terms, each lasting ten weeks, at the end of the Autumn term our students present a series of monologues, duologues or devised pieces in the smaller of our theatre spaces, the Lauriston Studio, allowing them to utilize their skills in front of a supportive 'family' audience. Our Spring and Summer terms see our students preparing for a full-length show which, depending upon the production chosen, may be performed in the 400 seater auditorium at the Garrick Theatre or, if the show or play is more suited to a more intimate space, in the Lauriston Studio. Our focus though is on performance and enjoyment, and we ensure the students are constantly working towards the presentation of their work. We also see ourselves as a feeder to the main theatre and many of our students have given superb performances in the theatre’s main productions to great success.
GAPA has 3 teaching staff and 3 senior assistants, all trained in the performing arts, as well as four trainee assistants working with our youngest students to develop their knowledge and gain experience. The GAPA currently run six classes on Saturday mornings for our 8 to 11 year olds, 12 to 16 year olds and our (senior group of) 15 to 18 year olds, plus our latest addition which is our 5 to 8 year old class on Saturday afternoons. The first class of the day commences at 9.00am until 11.00am, the second set of classes commence at 11.15am and finish at 1.15pm and the 5 to 8 class runs from 1.30pm until 3.00pm.
Whether you are interested in joining GAPA to perform, write, direct or get involved in the many back-stage activities that no show can do without, please contact: Bev Wells on 0161 928 1677 or email us at academy@altrinchamgarrick.co.uk
