A NEW VISION FOR CORNWALL Cornwall’s new Local Industrial Strategy is already driving the growth and prosperity of the region. The accelerated growth of the Data and Space sectors will play a key part in growing the Cornish economy over the next 10 years.

The Local Industrial Strategy will outline how Cornwall will develop an internationally credible space cluster and how R&D programmes will support economic growth in Data and Space.

The Cornwall Space Cluster is ambitious and committed to accelerating growth in the Data and Space sectors, building on Cornwall’s strength in these industries.

We work with national Government to grow the UK Space economy and in doing so we are growing Cornwall’s economy – securing jobs and investment for the future of Cornwall.

GROWTH

INVESTMENT IN INFRASTRUCTURE Significant investment has been made to the space cluster in Cornwall, with approximately £10m of research, development and innovation funding dedicated to facilitating growth.

Spaceport Cornwall has benefited from over £7m from the Growth Deal and a Launch UK grant, as well as £3.8m of EU and ‘Getting Building Fund’ grants.

Goonhilly Earth Station Ltd has received £8.4m investment from the European Space Agency and Local Growth Fund. These investments ensure the continued growth of the aerospace and space activity in Cornwall , enabling manufacturing of aerospace & space flight technologies.

Experts in cloud strategy and digital transformation, Cloud Digital’s new endeavour intends to integrate the rich web of space data harvested from satellites into mainstream software offerings. Using such software could help with the prediction of consumers’ behavioural patterns in the retail industry for example, or future proofing in the construction industry based on historical data.

Cornwall based charity, Cool Earth, is using satellite data to support forest protection in tropical rainforests across the world. They have been applying innovative methods to satellite imagery and geospatial data to develop a system that monitors canopy cover, carbon stocks, and numerous other indicators of forest health and resilience, as well as providing a real-time forest change detection system based on high-quality satellite data to its partners on the ground to respond to emerging threats to their forests and livelihoods. coolearth.org

For over sixty years, Flann’s specialist engineering team has been solving waveguide problems for the space, telecoms, automotive, health and education sectors. Flann serves companies such as NASA, Met Office and well known telecoms companies.

Demand from individuals and businesses for high speed data service is driving a revolution in satellite technology. Traditional large satellites weighing several tonnes and orbiting 22,236 miles above the equator are set to make way for nanosatellites and CubeSats deployed in constellations just 300 miles above the Earth’s surface.

Nanosatellites and CubeSats as small as 10cm cubed and weighing as little as 1.4kg are small enough to be launched as additional payloads on a large mission, in clusters of up to 100 at a time or on a single rocket or by a new class of vertical and horizontal space launch systems being developed in Cornwall and Scotland.

This makes them very cost effective and more than 350 of these satellites were launched in 2018.
