NSW Celebrates Diwali

N

SW is celebrating the global festival of Diwali, commemorating the triumph of light over darkness. Premier Chris Minns hosted the annual NSW Government’s Diwali celebrations at the Museum of Contemporary Arts at The Rocks. Music, dance and traditional ceremonies were highlighted, focusing on the spirit of bringing people together. ‘Diwali’ means ‘a row of lamps’. For centuries, it has been commonly celebrated by lighting small oil lamps called diyas, which symbolises the lifting of spiritual darkness and the renewal of life, and is a time to pray for health, knowledge and peace. The event is of great significance to the Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist communities and has been celebrated by the NSW Government since 2011. It is the culmination of month-long celebrations, when people from South Asian and Southeast Asian communities wear new colourful clothes, decorate their houses with festive lighting, and exchange gifts and sweets with relatives and friends. NSW Premier Chris Minns said: “I want to wish everyone celebrating across NSW a Happy Diwali.

By: Tanya Talwar

“Diwali recognises the triumph of the human spirit, through the festival of light and I can’t think of a better place to celebrate this wonderful day, than here in our multicultural state.

NSW Minister for Multiculturalism Steve Kamper said: “We wish all who celebrate, good health and a happy Diwali.” “Diwali is a celebration of light over darkness and good over evil. Let us allow the light to always triumph.” “We share in the rich social mosaic that makes us one of the most successful multicultural states in the world.” Download Our App

The Hon. Michelle Rowland MP Minister for Communications Federal Member for Greenway

2023 Diwali Message It gives me great pleasure to extend my best wishes to all those celebrating Diwali in our electorate of Greenway and across the country. For so many people, this sacred and auspicious time of Diwali is one that urges us to reflect on what we have, and to be grateful for these blessings - the light in our lives. Whether that be good health, happiness, success in work, good grades in education, or other causes for celebrations like weddings or new family members - we are reminded of the existing elements of prosperity that we are so fortunate have. And indeed, focusing on how we can bring even more light, and more good for ourselves, our family, and our communities at large, so we may overcome ‘darkness’ for ourselves and others. As the Member for Greenway, I feel so fortunate that our electorate is so focussed on the service of others. I hope that all who observe this Festival of Lights enjoy their time with friends and family as we welcome a fresh start and new beginnings. I wish you all a joyous, meaningful Diwali and look forward to celebrating with you.

The Fiji Police Force now permits Sikhs to wear turbans with official crowns

F

ollowing the approval of modifications to the uniform by the island nation’s police force in an effort to encourage diversity, Navjeath Singh Sohata became the first Sikh police officer to don a turban with the official Fiji Police crown. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew encouraged the wearing of a turban adorned with the official Fiji Police crown, acknowledging that tolerance and respect for diversity are essential to the effectiveness of policing initiatives. Selected from the open market recruiting drive, 20-year-old Police Constable Sohata is a member of Batch 66 undertaking the Basic Recruits Course Training in Nasova. Being a devoted Sikh, Sohata entered the academy with the knowledge that the training programme would necessitate personal sacrifices from him. “However, the Acting Commissioner of Police, in respecting Sohata’s rights, approved the wearing of the turban with the official Fiji Police crown,” the Fiji Police said in a statement. Commissioner Chew said the move was a testament of the organisation’s commitment in upholding the fundamental principles of equality and diversity. According to a book by Stanley Brown, ‘The History of the Fiji Police Force’, the first Sikh constables were recruited in force the early 1910s. Sharing his experience as a recruit, Sohata, who hails from Dreketi village in Northern Division of Fiji, said it was difficult at first

being away from his family. “I have a number of people in my life who I look up to as inspiration and role models, and it is my goal to make them proud and be just as good as them when it comes to my professional life,” Sohata said. According to records kept by the Lautoka Gurudwara, Sikhs arrived in Fiji towards the end of the indentured labour system and mostly established themselves as farmers, policemen and teachers. The first school built by Sikhs in Fiji was the Khalsa High School in Ba district and the Suva gurdwara, built in 1922, is the oldest of all.

in Sydney. Devi Durga (Sherawali Goddess) is often considered as the mother of our Universe and is the power behind the creation, preservation and destruction of our world. Durga Puja is an annual 10-day Hindu festival that celebrates Devi Durga’s victory over Mahishasura (demon), in her form as Mahishasura Mardini. Durga Puja is incomplete without fire-carrying Dhanuchii devotees, dance performances, family feasts,

pandal hopping and reunions and ADDA (gathering for casual conversations, all subjects are in-scope). This Puja is commonly performed in homes and community, featuring a temporary stage and decorations (pandals). Here, women are dressed in red-bordered taant (handloom) or silk saree, while men wear dhotikurta (traditional clothing). Durga Puja is a way to acknowledge and immerse ourselves into our rich Bengali culture and this is reflected in our cultural events this

When we did Zeefinity there were six top directors from India and some of the top directors from Pakistan as well and the wish that they wanted to project, was that the borders should open and let the art flow seamlessly.” Pakistani screenwriter BeeGul said, “Television is a very important medium in my part of the world at least we do not have very established cinemas all we can watch in the world of entertainment is television. Almost 60% of the world has television sets and we always knew that television was a very powerful medium in Pakistan. Sweet Memories: Have we c India’s Desserts too? The Indian calendar is choc-a-block with festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Eid, Raksha Bandhan, Dussehra, Diwali, etc.

by Shirley Jacob

O

ne common thread underlying this fabric of festivities is the adornment of Mithai often laid out on these occasions. Whilst I don’t really miss the experience of being force-fed sweets during these festivities, every time I eat these magical morsels of

Mithai, distant memories of my childhood are rekindled. These memories underpin my culture and identity and are precious to me as they are untouchable and personal. Akin to

this, Indian cuisine is also deeply rooted in our heritage. It has been consecrated through a fixation on ‘authenticity’ and cultural preservation. While the Brits may have anglicized and claimed some of our curries and chutneys, Indian sweets have seemingly remained unadulterated for thousands of years. However, with the growing tide of fusion cuisine, Mithai has emerged as the latest subject of experimentation in fine-dining cuisines across the globe. Intrigued by these developments, I began exploring the culinary heritage of Indian sweets to understand if the notion of ‘authentic cuisine’ is truly defensible and whether Mithai needs to evolve. From Ancient Sugarcane to Modern Sweetener: A Journey Through the History of Sugar Underpinning our affinity for Mithai is India’s deep-seated love of sugar, stemming from the days of yore. Sugarcane originated in India thousands of years

colonized

ago before our predecessors discovered how to crystallize sugar during the Gupta dynasty, around 350 AD. Sugar was highly valued for thousands of years, first offered to deities as Jaggery before being a highly coveted spice during the spice trade – even today, India is one of the leading exporters and producers of sugar worldwide. Evidently, India’s predilection to sugar has manifested over millennia and is strongly connected to our forefathers - but what about the evolution of Mithai? Indian sweets are often characterized as complex, requiring layers and layers of ingredients. However, it didn’t always start that way. India’s oldest Mithai, Malpua, first mentioned in Rig Veda thousands of years ago, is a simple pancake doused in sugar syrup. The genesis of modern (and more complex) sweets was built not only on sugar but the cornerstone of milk. Milk was constantly innovated and experimented with for generations to produce the smorgasbord of Mithai we enjoy today, such as Payasum and Gulab Jamun. Confectionery Crossroads: The Global Fusion of Flavors in Sweet Delights However, the history of these favourites

isn’t purely of Indian origin. Instead, they were heavily influenced by the intercultural movement of tribes and Persian and Mughal invaders. These invaders heavily influenced Mithai’s current state by introducing saffron, nuts, dried fruits, and rose water – even modern favourites such as Jalebi derived from the Middle East, not India. So maybe our idea of ‘authenticity’ and the means to preserve culture is not entirely defensible, given so many of our favourite Mithais were born from the evolution of cultural diffusion. Since India doesn’t have a Gutenberg bible of ‘authentic recipes’, there isn’t a canonical way to cook any recipe as each region has their own authentic ways of cooking a dish deeply embedded in their rich history. So maybe it’s time we should stop harking on about how ‘authentic’ a meal is as it’s all derivative anyways. Fundamentally, food is culture, and the exchange of ingredients and recipes reflects a global cultural exchange which is intrinsically important for spreading our cultural influence and creating new dishes representative of the culture and society we embody. What’s best for our cuisine is to embrace experimentation from other cultures and share our recipes to create the next evolution of sweets. Our focus shouldn’t be on cultural revanchism but rather on preserving our culture by sharing our heritage and recipes with younger generations and other cultures

to ensure our tradition is never lost. Haute Confections: Indulging in the Gourmet Sweets Trend Today young pâtissiers are reinventing traditional Mithais by exploring new healthy, organic and palatable options and infusing them with other non-traditional ingredients (e.g. rhubarb), techniques and methods to create a new sugar nirvana. ‘Gourmet Mithai’ has become the latest trend since it not only entices the taste buds but also uses ingredients innovatively by keeping the everevolving palates in mind. Whilst traditionalists may argue this is not ‘true mithai’, what is more important is that we continually promote a culture of culinary innovation to ensure our cuisine survives in novel and more digestible ways. Reflecting on my experiences eating gourmet Mithai at restaurants, traditional Mithai at festivals or enjoying Mithais in the confines of my own home during lockdown, what is most evocative about this sweet is not purely its taste, texture, or evolution, but how it makes me feel. Harkening back to my younger days, I reminisce so fondly as the Mithai was always the perfect accompaniment to those happy moments; it made me feel warm and triumphant in the most joyful moments – the proverbial cherry on top… and if you ask me that’s the ingredient, we all need to preserve.

Anusha Tharmarajah is privileged to have learned Bharatanatyam from the renowned Smt. Rukmani Devi Arundel, the founder of Kalakshethra in Chennai. Both the teacher and the student have ardently preserved the sacred essence of the art by reflecting the values instilled at Kalakshethra.

Amesha, a young, elegant, and energetic dancer, also a schoolteacher and a mother of two, skillfully identified bhakti in its various forms during her debut concert through her dance school, Nrityasagara, at the Bankstown Art Centre. Bhakti embodies concepts such as attachment, homage, faith, love, devotion, worship, and purity, and it extends to deities, gurus, lovers, and one’s homeland. It serves as a potent force shaping beliefs and actions, fostering a profound sense of purpose in life and a connection with the divine and the world. Amesha skillfully exchanged between different rhythmic beats and counts in tune with the mirudhangam, encapsulating Nandi’s vibrant energy and unwavering loyalty to Lord Shiva.

“Paavai Bakthi” represented female empowerment, paying homage to Goddess Shakthi, who manifests in various forms, from a child to a warrior, and reflects devotion to the omnipotent. “Pethai Bakthi” portrayed the innocence of a devotee eagerly expecting the Goddess’s immediate attention. In “Yoga Bhakthi,” Amesha elaborated on the story of Nandhanar, a devotee seeking permission to enter the temple to see Lord Shiva despite societal obstacles. Nandhanar retold the story of Markandeyan, a devotee requesting Lord Shiva’s protection from the God of Death, pleading for Shiva’s grace to permit entry for worship. “Bootha Bhakthi” was a tribute to nature, Mother Earth, and the five great elements: FIRE, EARTH, AIR, ETHER, and WATER. Each year, approximately 20,000 new cases are diagnosed, contributing to over 3,000 breast cancer-related deaths. The risk of developing breast cancer increases with age, and early detection through regular mammograms and self-examinations is crucial for successful treatment. Ongoing research and nationwide initiatives, including the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s efforts, strive to reduce the burden of breast cancer, improve outcomes, and provide support to those affected. THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS Diwali or Deepavali is by far the biggest and the most popular Indian festival celebrated by Indians all over the world.

he festival rounds off the year beautifully as it is a festival of hope and the victory of everything that is good and noble. The lights not just dispel the physical darkness, but symbolically dispel the darkness of ignorance and hatred. While the festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm in most parts of India, the stories and the customs vary. Diwali has now become more than a festival; it is now a celebration of diversity and inclusion. It is global celebration that blends together cultures, faiths, traditions, and communities. I spoke to a few members in the community to better understand the meaning of the festival. While most of us are familiar with the story of Diwali commemorating the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom of Ayodhya, after 14 years in exile and vanquishing Ravana, I was keen to know what this festival meant to people who followed other religious faiths. Dipika Gandhi follows Jainism. For her Diwali is the occasion when Lord Mahavira the last Tirthankar attained Nirvana or liberation of the soul and his devoted disciple Gandhara Gautam Swami attained Kevalgyan or Enlightenment. Many Jains engage in fasting, meditation and chant special mantras and hymns during Diwali. It is a time to pay tribute to Lord Mahavir’s teachings, promoting compassion and advocating non-violence and the equality of all living beings. She said, “My favourite part was the ‘Chopda Pujan where we worshipped the Goddess of wealth- Lakshmi Devi and the goddess of knowledge Saraswati Devi and did pooja of our business account books and school notebooks to ensure a successful and profitable year”. Ravinder Kaur Bali who follows Sikhism explained that in 1606, fol-

lowing the torture and execution of the fifth Sikh Guru Arjan Dev ji in Lahore at the behest of the then Mughal emperor Jehangir, the Sikhs found themselves under the leadership of the sixth Guru Hargobind ji, the son of Guru Arjan Dev ji. The execution, having been carried out on an unfounded allegation followed by an unfair trial marked two historical beginnings for the Sikhs. One, Guru Arjan Dev ji was recognised as the first martyr of the Sikh faith. Secondly, it led to the militarisation of Sikhs, initiated by Guru Hargobind ji who chose to bear two swords, one of ‘Piri’ or religious guidance, and the other of ‘Miri’, or military leadership. Jehangir soon found a pretext for capturing Guru Hargobind ji, and along with fifty-two princes, most of them Rajputs, he was imprisoned in the impassive fort at Gwalior. The fort at Gwalior now houses the historic Gurudwara called ‘Bandi Chhor Sahib’, and Deepavali itself is celebrated as ‘Bandi Chhor Divas’. The day is celebrated with exchange of sweets and gifts with friends and families, and elaborate lighting and fireworks, in homes, and in Gurudwaras everywhere. As with most Sikh festivities, the Gurudwaras are the hub of the religious commemoration, with hymn-singing and special prayer service followed by the free community meals called ‘Langar’, a tradition of providing meals to everyone in the congregation irrespective of their status or station in life. Other than the rituals, Diwali celebrations come attached with a number of fond memories and for the Indian

And more commonly in this day and age, Diwali in our household is an excuse to reconnect with family and friends, to foster stronger bonds, exchanging gifts, and of course, indulging in a feast with some Diwali sparkles. This encapsulates the essence of hope, togetherness, and generosity. Wishing everyone a happy Diwali !!” NIMISH AND NAMITA MATANI “While traditionally we celebrate Diwali to signify Lord Ram’s victory over Ravan and return from exile, as years have gone by, I’ve begun to get more spiritual and less religious about the celebrations. Whilst the traditional spring cleaning at home is still a regular, I stopped making the usual variety savoury fried snacks and sweets. Now it is more of a sampler of a delicacy or two and a simple prayer ceremony at home. But what has fundamentally changed for me is the perspective in which I celebrate Diwali. As conveyed through these various messages, Diwali or Deepavali, is a festival that goes above religious connotations. Light dispels darkness and in today’s world where we are confronted by many challenges - social, communal and global – there is a great need for the light of patience, understanding, goodwill, camaraderie and hope. Diwali celebration in Australia is a testament of its ability to embrace different cultures and is a constant reminder to stay connected to our cultural heritage. This joyous festival is also a time to reflect on our inner self and cleanse the negativities, be grateful and thankful and spread the light of love, peace and harmony. As we enter the new beginning, may the lights of Diwali illuminate our hearts and strengthen our human bonds. Happy Diwali to all! Diwali celebrates new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil, and light over darkness. The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, meaning “rows of lighted lamps”. It’s all about inviting good things into your life – health, wealth and prosperity. Diwali celebrations in Maharashtra begins with Vasu Baras. Here Dhanteras is celebrated in the form of dhantrayodashi, while Chhoti Diwali takes the form of Narak Chaturdashi. On the day of the festival, Maharashtrians pray to goddess Lakshmi and also observe Diwali Cha Padva which celebrates the bond of marriage. These include lighting diya lamps, saying the Lakshmi puja prayer, eating traditional food, and enjoying fireworks. A diya is an oil lamp used to illuminate homes during the Diwali festival and symbolizes prosperity and optimism. This is one of many traditions of Diwali based on light. YouGo with Rajni – Let’s Medit ’Tis the season to be

T

By: Rajni Ghai Malhotra

he festive season is upon us! As we soak in the spirit of festivals such as Diwali, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, Donghzi Festival, Yalda all the way to Christmas, let us remind ourselves that it is also the season to be mindful. Because it is in this season feasts and treats that we tend to let ourselves go. While it is natural to indulge in the delights of the festive season, it is too easy to cross the fine line into overindulgence. This is where mindfulness provides us a balanced approach to celebrating the festivals to the full while minimising the stresses of excessive shopping, eating and gifting.

Here’s how to be mindful in the festive season: Shop mindfully It’s the season of sales and shopping for presents, making it the perfect scenario for one to splurge and collect more than one needs. There’s no denying that at one stage or another we’ve all experienced that helpless gravitation to attractive displays and discounts that lead to doubtful purchases and overspending on items that we didn’t

even want from shops that we didn’t even intend on visiting in the first place! Mindful tip: Mindful steps to the shops - As you walk into a market or shopping centre, take a mindful breath and connect with the purpose of that particular shopping trip. Remind yourself of the time, money and effort that you are willing to expend on that trip. Make mindful use of shopping lists to stay focused - Idle rambling through the stores whilst often productive in picking up items missed on the list, usually result in filling up bags with more stock than required. Mindful pauses to check your progress against the shopping list are immensely effective in keeping you connected to the purpose of your trip. One simple rule of mindful shopping - If you’re not sure of it, don’t buy it. Take a mindful pause and ask yourself do I really need this? Eat mindfully It’s the time of the year of multiple morning and afternoon teas, work lunches, after work drinks, BBQs, picnics, weekend lunches and drinks. We’re all eating so much more these

tate Mindfully Series e mindful days, it’s easy to lose count of the calories. Mindful tip: Take a few mindful breaths as you approach the food space, reminding yourself to watch what and how much you eat. Taking small bites, chewing mindfully and small pauses between serves will help you to savour the food and be guided by your body to differentiate between tongue hunger and stomach hunger. Gift mindfully There is much to be said about being mindful when buying presents for others. It’s often challenging to find the perfect gift that both, fits your budget and is a welcome

gift for the receiver. It has also become common practice for people to dip into their own collection of re-giftable items and pass them on. But spare a thought before you do that. Wouldn’t it have been lovely if the present you received had actually been of use to you? Are you re-gifting mindfully or is it only adding to another stage in the gifting cycle? Has gifting become a formal exercise/a chore that has to be completed? Mindful tip: Keep it simple - Spend a few mindful minutes to think about the interests of the person you are choosing the gift for. A thoughtful gift is always welcome and appreciated. If you can’t think of anything, ask or give a

gift card. Re-gift wisely else donate – Re-gift only if it will be a welcome gift for the receiver. Else donate. Spread the joy beyond your circle of family, friends and associates. Celebrate mindfully Festivals are about meaningful connections, positive interactions, feeling of togetherness, unity, hope and being connected with family, friends and the wider community. This festive season, let us celebrate another dimension of connectedness – that between: You and your Breath You and your Surrounds Your Thoughts and your Actions Your Body, Mind and Soul Wish you all a truly relaxing holiday season and a mindfully rich new year. Heman Sharma poems

S

By: Daljeet Bakshi

The budding talent of Indian heritage are stars in Australia . Recently during a catch with Mr Kewal Krishan Sharma (Indian parents group) met his grand daughter Heman Sharma, 11 years old ,student of year 6 , who is passionate about writing, who loves badminton and swimming.

he always supports in person the regular events organized by her grandfather and his co fellows for Indian parents in Adelaide . She has penned down various poems highlighting the family values , culture . She gives the credit for inspiration to her grandfather Mr KK Sharma who himself loves writing the poems and her family . Here are the two poems she loves to share with our readers . We wish Heman Sharma lot of laurels in her life and the great achievements in her poetic world .

Poem 1 about Indian parents The Indian parents of Adelaide, Are proud of their roots displayed, With parties celebrating their heritage so true, Organized by Grandpas, with happiness so true. The music fills the air, As they dance without a care,

salwar suits and kurtas are so fine, The jewellery they wear is so divine.

The food is rich and rare,s As they feast with those who share, Their beauty and grace combine, As they celebrate with a shine. Laughter echoes loud, Joy spreads like a cloud, Their love for each other around, Culture is celebrated, with proud. Traditions passed with a braid, Honouring their roots unafraid, Indian parents in Adelaide, Celebrating heritage displayed.

Peom 2 From every corner of the land, They came with open hearts and hands, A party of diverse cultures, united in their glee, Celebrating their differences, yet living in harmony.

The beats of the dhol and the strumming of the sitar, Filled the air as they gathered from near and far, The aroma of spices and the taste of sweet treats, Satisfying their hunger as they danced to joyful beats. They spoke in tongues of many kinds, Each voice blending in a harmonious bind, A celebration of their unique identities, As they revelled in their shared similarities. For this was a party of unity, A celebration of diversity, Where people of all backgrounds came together, In a joyous display of togetherness forever. And so they danced and sang into the night, A testament to the power of unity’s might, For they were a multicultural people, joined as one, A shining example of what can be done. Download Our App

Port Augusta is now home to a beautiful new mural celebrating Indian culture. Located at the side of the LG Riches Centre on Chapel Street, a colourful and meaningful mural now showcases

India’s heritage and vibrancy. In March 2023 a Connecting to Culture festival was held in the Barracks by Council’s Community Development Team and funded by Uniting Country SA (Communities for Children) celebrating Indian culture. A survey went out to children attending this festival asking what they would like to see in a mural which depicts Indian culture, and the survey results were used to help create the mural concept design. Melbourne mural artist Maria-Rosa Szychowski travelled to Port Augusta to complete the mural and was proud of how the mural reflects the diversity and vibrancy of the community. Maria also enjoyed speaking to the community who engaged with her while designing the mural. Local Indian community members, Dr Grewal, Mayor Linley Shine and Cr Sunny Singh congratulated the artist on the completion of the mural. Mayor Shine stated, “This mural reflects our city’s inclusive and welcoming spirit and shows how art can bring vibrancy and also communities together.” The Indian community in Port Augusta is excited about this mural. Councillor Sunny Singh mentioned, “It’s great to see a mural that represents our culture and the beauty of diversity. ollywood music keeping the dressing room upbeat in Weber WBBL season 09. The Weber Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) is not only witnessing top-notch cricket but is also becoming a melting pot of cultures, where Bollywood music is playing a unique role in bringing players together. In a recent candid conversation, Indian cricket star Harmanpreet Kaur and Sri Lankan cricketer

Harmanpreet Kaur, who is enjoying her second stint with the Melbourne Renegades, shared her experience with the team, emphasizing the special bond that exists among the players. To keep the dressing room vibrant and upbeat, she has taken up the unique responsibility of bringing a daily dose of Indian songs to the table. “Everyone in the Renegades squad enjoys Indian music, and they’re always eager to listen to my playlist,” Kaur said. Her enthusiasm for Bollywood music has become a unifying force within the team.

Chamari Athapaththu, not just a seasoned cricket professional but also a fan of Hindi songs, was quick to chime in. “I like Hindi songs too. In fact, my Sri Lankan teammates regularly follow Indian music. It’s a shared passion that keeps us connected on and off the field.” As the candid conversation transitioned to the standard and quality of cricket in the WBBL, both Harmanpreet and Chamari expressed their admiration for the aspiring local talent. “I believe WBBL and the Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) are the two most competitive women’s cricket leagues in the world,” Chamari Athapaththu stated. “What gives WBBL the edge is the skills and diversity of local talent that add a unique dimension to the league.” Harmanpreet Kaur echoed this sentiment, adding, “WBBL has many positives, but the best among them is the approach of the local players in these franchises towards the game. Their dedication and hard work have made the league truly remarkable.” The rise of local talent in the WBBL has undoubtedly contributed to its reputation as one of the most competitive women’s cricket leagues globally. As Bollywood music creates a sense of unity among players from diverse backgrounds, the league continues to grow and evolve as a hub for emerging talents.

ADELAIDE FILM FESTIVAL WRAPS FIRST WEEK WITH SOLD OUT SESSIONS HERALDING AN EVEN BIGGER SECOND WEEK

A

By: Daljeet Bakshi

plethora of sold out sessions in Adelaide Film Festival’s opening week - from Kitty Green’s The Royal Hotel to the special preview of Speedway, and sold-out sessions like The Rooster, The Sweet East and Monster – herald an even bigger second week for the Festival. Cinema lovers are encouraged to get in early and book tickets for the remaining films. After sold out galas on opening night and opening weekend, there are just a handful of tickets left for the Closing Night Gala to see MY NAME’S BEN FOLDS i play piano. Ben Folds will join the audience via video link from the US for a post screening Q&A and director Scott Hicks will be in attendance. Friday night’s world premiere of The Musical Mind: A Portrait In Process, also directed by Scott Hicks, features a live performance by piano virtuoso David Helfgott, who is one of the musical geniuses featured in the film, alongside Daniel Johns, Ben Folds and Simon Tedeschi. Beyond the galas, festival goers are urged to seek out those hidden gems that surprise and change your perspective on the world, or give you a window into another part of it. Here are a selection chosen by the Festival’s programming team. Goodbye Julia Mohamed Kordofani / Sudan Two women forge an unusual friendship across a devastating national divide in this engrossing Sudanese drama that scored a major success at Cannes. Mona, a northern Sudanese who is Arabic and Muslim, is wracked by guilt after covering up a murder. She tries to atone by taking the southern Sudanese widow, Julia, and her son (who are

The Mountains Christians) into her home. Four Daughters Kaouther Ben Hania / France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia Four Daughters was the deserving winner of the Golden Eye for Best Documentary at Cannes. After finding work outside the country, independent single mother Olfa returns to the Tunisian town of Sousse. In her absence, her two eldest daughters have been radicalised and eventually disappear, suspected of joining the Islamic State. Monisme Riar Rizaldi / Indonesia, Qatar Mount Merapi – the name is Javanese for ‘fire mountain’ – is the most active stratovolcano in the world. And yet a diverse range of people are drawn to live in its shadows: vulcanologists who debate whether it might mean extinction for humankind, sand miners who sustain the local economy at a cost, paramilitaries whose malign influence hovers over the area, and a shaman with a more mystical interest in the spirit of the mountain.

Hyper-personal and profoundly moving while maintaining a whimsical humour, The Mountains is a unique family self-portrait of reconciliation and loss. Growing up in Norway twenty-five years ago, director Christian Einshøj’s family suffered a great tragedy when his younger brother died. Now Christian and his other two brothers are physically and emotionally isolated from each other as the family bonds dissolve. The Shadowless Tower Zhang Lu / China The intricacies of Beijing life have never been as lovingly rendered as they are here in Zhang Lu’s calmly composed, redemptive dramedy. Failed poet but semi-successful food critic Gu Wentong is facing the existential pangs of mid-life crisis. Dealing with divorce, the passing of his mother and part-time parenthood, he is drawn from his malaise through a hesitant, quirky romance with younger photographer Ouyang and the unexpected chance to reunite with his long-estranged, and mysteriously disgraced, father.

Life Stories

Does life age like wine? As we mingle over dinner and drinks and conversations of all sorts come about, we often hear, ‘as with wine, life gets better with age!’. While that may be true for some of us, can this be said for all?

W

hile we may not have a quantitative answer to this question, it’s a question that should keep us up at night. As a child, when my family relocated to Australia 23 years ago, the most daunting feeling was not having any grandparents around or aunts and uncles…or cousins! The relocation was exciting for 3 reasons; first airplane ride, 14 hours of non-stop tv and a few days of eating burgers, chips and pizzas. But beyond that, as an eight-yearold, I didn’t quite realise what it meant to no longer have grandparents around…or even be their favourite! Unbeknownst to me, God was very aware of how dear these relationships were to me and so, as his grand plan often unfolds, I got the next best thing. My parents had discovered an old Hungarian couple that lived across my childhood home who were children-less and longing for child-like love. Slowly, but surely, this neighbouring friendship grew over-time, and our relationship very naturally grew to that of a God parent/ God child. The intensity of this love was such that when my biological grandparents from India would arrive for a visit, my sister and I would be in constant flurry about the two granddads fighting over us – knowing now, of course, these were the joys of childish innocence. This relationship continued to flourish and enriched our exposure to be living in a Download Our App

third culture that was a wonderful amalgamation ofTanya our environment. My last memory By: Talwar of our God mother was a week shy from her passing where she prepared the most wonderful Hungarian Easter lunch for us, as she did every year at the very ripe age of 93. So why have you just read 326 words of a stranger’s tale? Let me tell you. Living a healthy, long, prosperous and fulfilling life goes well beyond being physically fit. Age shouldn’t be a barrier; rather it is a barrier that we tend to put in our own minds. However, to lift this barrier, we must give our lives purpose which pushes us to wake to another day filled with strong determination. It has been proven, time and time again, that an intergenerational bond usually poses NOVEMBER I 2023

as the purpose that tips the scales of life into fulfilment rather than ‘waiting for the lights to go out’. 20 years on, my toddler daughter and I are working to build a beautiful bond of our own with 2 aged care residents in a facility nearby with the aim of bringing that glimmer of hope, purpose and excitement to a wonderful human. We’re cherishing weekly moments that we spend with them both and enjoy developing our own love language. With an increased social media pressure on adopting the gold standard of parenting styles; let’s shift the focus in building our own gold standards of providing intergenerational support and fulfilling relationships with our learned and aged folk. www.DesiAustralia.com
