Free Kinder reshaping kindergarten Punjabi community

As the vibrant Indian diaspora continues to flourish in Victoria, the state’s commitment to fostering cultural diversity and inclusivity remains resolute. One remarkable initiative that exemplifies this commitment is the Free Kinder program offered by the Victorian Department of Education, which aims at providing access to quality early childhood education for children from diverse backgrounds, including those who may have faced barriers in accessing such services in the past.

The Free Kinder program is a visionary endeavour that ensures every 3- and 4-year-old child in Victoria has access to high-quality early childhood education. Launched as part of the Best Start, Best Life reforms, this program aims to lay a strong foundation for lifelong learning, social development, and cultural enrichment. Every year, Free Kinder saves up to $2,500 per child and allows more than 28,000 Victorians to return to work, over 26,600 of them are women.

Why Is it essential for the Punjabi-Speaking Community?

1. Holistic Development

Early childhood education is not just about academics; it’s about holistic development. Through play-based learning, music, art, and storytelling, the Free Kinder program nurtures creativity, emotional intelligence, and social skills. For Punjabi-speaking children, this holistic approach ensures they grow up confident, resilient, and well-rounded individuals who can contribute meaningfully to both their community and wider society.

2. Cultural Connection

The Free Kinder program goes beyond language acquisition. It fosters a sense of cultural pride and belonging. For Punjabi-speaking families, having their children learn Punjabi

within the kindergarten setting reinforces cultural identity. It bridges generational gaps, strengthens family bonds, and instils a deep appreciation for Punjabi traditions, festivals, and values.

3. Community Engagement

The Free Kinder program actively involves parents and caregivers. Regular workshops, cultural events, and parent-teacher interactions create a supportive network. For Punjabi-speaking parents, this engagement provides insights into their child’s education, encourages active participation, and builds connections with other families facing similar experiences.

4. Language Enrichment: Learning

Punjabi

For the first time ever, over 5,000 preschool kids across Victoria are now immersed in the beauty of the Punjabi language. These young learners spend three hours every week engaging with Punjabi, allowing them to absorb its rich vocabulary, cultural nuances, and vibrant expressions. By integrating Punjabi into the curriculum, the Free Kinder program celebrates linguistic diversity and encourages children to embrace their heritage.

Even parents from Punjabi-speaking Indian community agree with the benefits and changes the program has made in their lives. Don’t just believe us, hear from them!

The Singh family from Dandenong, Manpreet and Harman are very happy with the change Kinder has made for their daughter.

“Our daughter Simran was enrolled last year under the Free Kinder program where she joyfully learns Punjabi songs, dances, and stories. We see Simran’s confidence growing. She proudly shares rhymes with her grandparents, creating beautiful memories”, they said.

Mrs. Gippi Dhillon, parent to twin boys in kinder, was appreciative of how the CALD outreach worker helped her through enrolment saying, “The availability of a CALD outreach worker is a game-changer. It’s good to talk to someone who understands our culture, speaks our language, and can help us navigate the system with ease. We no longer feel lost or overwhelmed. I was glad I had assistance through the enrolment process for my sons. I had so many questions, which the outreach worker answered very patiently.”

“The in-language resources provided by the program have been invaluable. They have made the program more inclusive and accessible. We now feel more connected and involved in our children’s education”, Gippi added.

Another parent, Mr. Gagan, who recently finished enrolment for his daughter, highlighted how the savings have helped his family – “The Victorian Kinder program has been a lifeline for us. The financial aid of up to $2500 per child per year has made a significant difference in our lives. It has made quality education more accessible for our children. This program is more than just about education. It’s about empowerment. It has given us, as parents, the confidence, and the resources to support our children’s education.”

Looking Ahead

As the Free Kinder program continues to thrive, it exemplifies Victoria’s commitment to nurturing the next generation. For the Punjabi-speaking Indian community, it’s more than just education—it’s a celebration of language, culture, and unity.

By enrolling in this program, children will not only receive quality education but also be immersed in a supportive and inclusive environment that celebrates diversity. It is a

The Hijab in Islam: A Symbol of Modesty and Spiritual Identity

In today’s world, the hijab - a headscarf worn by Muslim women - has become a symbol that sparks curiosity, debate, and sometimes controversy. Yet, beyond the fabric lies a profound tradition rooted in Islamic teachings, cultural heritage, and personal conviction. Exploring the reasons why women cover their hair with a hijab unveils a narrative of modesty, identity, spirituality, and empowerment within the Islamic faith. In this article, we delve deep into the multifaceted significance of the hijab in Islam, shedding light on its importance and dispelling misconceptions.

At the heart of the hijab’s importance in Islam lies the principle of modesty, a virtue highly valued in Islamic teachings. The Quran, the holy book of Islam, encourages both men and women to dress modestly, with Surah An-Nur (24:31) specifically instructing women to draw their veils over their bodies. The hijab serves as a tangible expression of this modesty, redirecting the focus from external appearances to inner virtues and character.

The decision to wear the hijab often stems from a profound spiritual connection to Islam and a desire to submit to the will of Allah. For many Muslim women, the hijab becomes a tangible expression of their faith and devotion. By donning the hijab, they symbolically align themselves with the teachings of Islam, acknowledging Allah’s authority and seeking spiritual fulfillment. This act of submission serves as a constant reminder of their commitment to live according to Islamic principles, guiding their actions and interactions in daily life.

The hijab serves as a shield, preserving the dignity and privacy of Muslim women by creating a boundary between the individual and the outside world, fostering an environment of respect. Through covering their hair, women assert control over their personal

space, emphasizing the sanctity of their bodies, and deflecting unwanted attention. Beyond its role as a religious garment, the hijab is a symbol of cultural and religious identity within the diverse Muslim community. Adapted in various styles across regions, it reflects the rich tapestry of Islamic traditions worldwide, becoming a source of pride for many women and fostering a deep sense of connection to their cultural heritage and a feeling of belonging.

Contrary to misconceptions, the decision to wear the hijab is often a personal choice made by Muslim women. Many see it as an empowering act, allowing them to define their identity on their terms. By embracing the hijab, women assert their autonomy in a world that sometimes objectifies and marginalizes them, challenging societal norms and misconceptions.

In conclusion, the hijab is a significant aspect of Islamic identity, representing modesty, obedience to Allah, preservation of dignity, and cultural pride. Far from being a symbol of oppression, the hijab serves as a powerful tool for Muslim women to express their faith and navigate the complexities of the modern world. Understanding the multifaceted reasons behind wearing the hijab is essential for fostering respect, tolerance, and appreciation for the diverse practices within the global Muslim community.

The Holly month of

Ramadhan (Ramzan) and Eid-Ul-Fitr

Eid is centred around celebrating the end of a month of fasting and spending time with family, friends and people within the community. Giving thanks to God is core, which is why on the morning of Eid, Muslims offer a special congregational Eid prayer.

There are two popular Calendars in the world. Gregorian which is based on the solar system while the other one is based on the lunar system. Islam has adopted the lunar system and its year starts from the time which marks the migration of the Prophet of Islam from Makah to Medina known as Hijra. The lunar months start the next day after the visibility of the crescent moon and are either 29 or 30 days. Ramazan as known in the Indian subcontinent is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is the most sacred of all the 12 months for two reasons.

Firstly because of the compulsory fasting known as “Roza” from dawn to nightfall for the entire month of 29 or 30 days. The second aspect is that in this very month, the divine revelations started in the form of verses “Ayat” which was written down in the form of the Holy Quran.

Festival

Fast (Roza) is an obligatory ritual that is compulsory for all believers, both men and women from the age which slightly vary from place to place but is fixed at 9 for girls and 14 for boys. Fast can also be observed by younger boys and girls and it is an act of good piety but till they come to the age it is not compulsory (Wajib). Roza in the Quran is prescribed to all believers from the night (Layl) tonight (Layl). All eating and drinking are stopped bythe first streak of light which starts from the eastern horizon which is called Subhe-Kazib or false morning. In religious terms,it is called Suhoor or Sahree and is usually a very light meal of your choice. Friday prayers in congregation during the month of Ramzan have much more value and the last Friday of Ramazan prayers are observed with greater piety and fervor.

After 30 days of fasting from down to dusk, comes the day of rejoicing known as Eid-Ul-Fitr which is marked by a special congregator prayer a little after sunrise and, peo -

Sweet dishes are made at home and shared among all people keeping in mind specifically the people in need. The morning starts with decorating the house, wearing new clothes, buying and making sweets. The most popular sweet dish called Seviyaan(sweet vermicelli) made in milk is offered to every guest coming for wishes and greetings. Sometimes families and friends gather together for dinners and parties.

In many places, the celebration goes on for 2 to 3 days by visiting everyone’s house and sharing their joy and happiness. Giving gifts to children is a big part of the festival. Holi, one of the most commemorated Hindu festivals which celebrates the coming of Spring in India. This joyous occasion is celebrated through the burning of the Holika Dahan as well as the playing of Holi. Through many legends and stories, the festival of colours ideally signifies the win of good over evil. Additionally, to welcome spring a.k.a the season of love, Holi honours the beautiful love story between Krishna and Radha by playing with equally beautiful colours.

Holi is a time where we all gather and simply enjoy life in the company of family and friends, and maybe even meet some new faces. But how exactly is Holi celebrated around the world? Here’s what you need to

know about Holi and its celebrations around the globe!

Regions of India

In India, Holi isn’t just about throwing colours, a matter of fact different regions in India celebrate it quite differently.

Krishna spent his childhood, the celebrations here go for a week. In Uttar Pradesh, the towns of Barsana celebrate ‘Lathmar Holi” translates to the festival of sticks. As well as colours being smeared, women are allowed to chase men with sticks. This tradition arises through the story Krishna teasing Radha’s friends which led her friends to drive Krishna out of Barsana.

Music being a large part of the Hindu culture, many regions celebrate through singing and dancing including Bengal. Here, younger boys and girls dress up with garlands, while singing and dancing, welcoming the new season. Gujarat also celebrates through music through chants of famous folklores. Going down south, Holi is not that celebrated and is more likely to be celebrated

by the youth.

Even though most regions celebrate Holi differently, a few things remain the same. The tradition of Holika Dahan is celebrated widely and is a ritual which celebrates the win of good over bad through the burins of evil. Another tradition is the breaking of the buttermilk pot. Celebrating Holi worldwide

Being a country which holds more than 17% of the world’s population, there’s bound to be endless amounts of migration, which means the spreading of Indian tradi tions.

Trinidad and Tobago have a large population of Indians who migrated during 1845. Similar to those in India, Holi is celebrated with colours and music, specifically a song called Chowtal which is sung during the festival. They also tend to harmonise bad feelings amongst each

other through the symbolic notion of water works and sweets, the people love to dance and sing songs as well as meet and greet people through the songs of Phagua.

In Nepal, Holi is a major event. It begins with women dressing up in beautiful gowns and circling a wood pole praying for blessings. Then the surrounding streets are turned into colourful playgrounds. This festival in Nepal tends to last for 8 days and just like everywhere else it is joined with singing and dancing.

Regardless of where Holi is celebrated, there’s always coloured powder involved, music and dancing. Holi allows celebrating the good within family and friends, no matter where you are.

Jainesh Jogia, director and founder of Agnee Funeral is doing yeoman service to mankind

Can you tell us about your background.

“I hail from Suva, Fiji, where I was born to my parents, Kanji Bhai and Prabha Jogia, who are First Generation Indians rooted in Fiji. Raised in the rich traditions of Hinduism, I found religion to be an integral part of life’s fabric from an early age.

My educational journey took an intriguing turn as I attended Catholic schools, exposing me to diverse perspectives within our religiously varied community. Growing up, my family fostered an environment of openness and hospitality, welcoming all into our home without hesitation.

Beginning my formal education at the University of the South Pacific and later completing it at the Australian Catholic University, I furthered my studies with postgraduate work at Newcastle University. It was during this time that my path diverged into the technology industry, where I dedicated myself until 2010 when I ventured into entrepreneurship in an entirely different sector.

Just before the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic, I found myself drawn to an industry that had always held a mysterious allure for me – the funeral industry. Contemplating the journey between a person’s passing and their solemn presence in a adorned casket before their loved ones had long intrigued me.

Through the most challenging of times, I gained firsthand insight into the inner workings of this industry. Armed with this knowledge and experience, I founded Agnee Funeral Services.

I view my life’s journey as a tapestry woven with lessons, each one preparing me to offer the utmost care and support to grieving families. My purpose, my dharma, is to ease their burden during their darkest hours.”

“What prompted the establishment of Agnee Funeral Services?

Foremost, I firmly believe that funerals within our Indian community should be conducted by individuals who intimately understand the intricacies and significance of our traditions. This belief stems from a deep-rooted conviction that only members of our own community can truly appreciate the nuances involved in honoring our departed loved ones.

Furthermore, I recognized a glaring need for someone from my generation to step forward and fulfill this essential role, particularly in a predominantly Western society where our cultural traditions may be overlooked or misunderstood by younger

generations. This perspective is particularly poignant given that many individuals within my age group (ranging from 30 to 60 years old) still have elderly parents or relatives amongst us.

I am personally driven by the importance of reassuring our elders that there is someone within their own community who comprehends the correct procedures and cultural requirements surrounding funerary rites. It is paramount that they feel a sense of comfort and confidence knowing that their traditions will be respected and upheld with dignity.

Moreover, having been closely involved in ushering numerous individuals into the care

of various funeral service providers, I have witnessed firsthand the behind-the-scenes processes and the conditions of various mortuaries and storage facilities. Regrettably, there is often much to be desired in terms of standards and care.

I am proud to affirm that Agnee Funeral Services operates in partnership with impeccably maintained facilities, where stringent protocols are rigorously adhered to ensure the utmost sanctity and respect for the deceased. I am confident that these facilities provide the level of dignity and care that I would personally desire when my time inevitably comes.

At Agnee Funeral Services, our guiding principle is simple yet profound: to deliver cremation services with the utmost ethical consideration and compassionate care.”

“What distinguishes Agnee Funeral Services from other providers?

Our commitment extends beyond merely attending to the deceased’s needs as they transition to our facility for their final rites. What truly sets us apart is the personalized care and meticulous attention to detail we extend to the grieving family throughout the entire process.

I personally guide the family with compassion and empathy, ensuring they feel supported every step of the way.”

“Allow me to guide you through the process of arranging a funeral with Agnee:

Upon receiving authorization from the family to represent them, we respectfully bring the departed loved one to our impeccably maintained facility. Here, they are allocated a private resting space where they remain under our attentive care for the ensuing days.

During this period, we meticulously handle all legal documentation necessary for a dignified cremation ceremony, affording the family the opportunity to witness the final journey of their cherished one.

Meanwhile, I personally visit the family at their residence to collaboratively organize the details of the final day, ensuring it reflects the essence and wishes of their loved one.

Throughout the entire process, our approach is characterized by unwavering care, comfort, and support. I am dedicated to being there for the family every step of the way, offering my personal assistance and guidance.”

“To ensure that we deliver personalized and compassionate services to families during their time of need, we follow a comprehensive approach:

1. Personalized Consultation: Following the initial contact, I personally meet with the family to discuss their preferences and plan the funeral service. This allows us to tailor the arrangements to ensure they can bid their loved one a meaningful farewell.

2. Collaborative Approach: I work closely with the family and their religious leaders, such as their family pundit, to ensure that cultural and religious customs are respectfully observed. This collaborative effort ensures that the funeral service honors the traditions and beliefs of the deceased and their family.

3. Cultural Sensitivity: Drawing from my experience in both Hindu and Western funeral practices, I bring a deep understanding of cultural nuances to our services. This knowledge, coupled with compassion and precision, enables us to conduct the final rites in accordance with Hindu customs, respecting every aspect of the tradition.

By combining personalized consultation,

collaborative teamwork, and cultural sensitivity, we strive to provide families with a compassionate and dignified farewell for their loved ones.”

“At Agnee Funeral Services, we offer a range of unique and customized services to honor the individuality of your loved one:

1. Customized Coffins: We specialize in crafting personalized coffins tailored to reflect the unique personality and interests of the deceased. From incorporating favorite rugby team colors to depicting significant imagery from their life journey, we can create coffins that truly celebrate their essence. Additionally, our coffins can be custom-sized and shaped to suit individual preferences. For instance, we once designed a coffin resembling an oversized suitcase for a seasoned traveler.

2. Varied Hearse Options: We provide a choice between black or white hearses to complement the style and preferences of the family.

3. Custom Flower Arrangements: Our team can create bespoke floral arrangements to adorn the funeral proceedings, adding a personal touch to the ceremony.

4. Personalized Memorial Cards: We offer personalized memorial cards, allowing families to commemorate their loved one with a lasting keepsake.

These unique and customized services are designed to ensure that every aspect of the funeral honors the individuality and legacy of your beloved family member.”

“At Agnee Funeral Services, we understand the importance of ensuring our services remain accessible and affordable for families during their time of need.

While we recognize that funerals can be as elaborate and intricate as the family desires, ultimately serving as a celebration of the life lived, we also prioritize affordability. Our commitment extends to providing services that align with the economic capabilities of each family, while still upholding the traditional Hindu customs and practices.

During the consultation phase, we transparently discuss all available options with the family, ensuring they are fully informed about the costs involved. This

approach allows families to make informed decisions that accommodate their financial circumstances while honoring their loved one in a meaningful and dignified manner.”

The NSNA Service.

“The NSNA (No Service No Attendance)

Cremation Service represents a novel and cost-effective approach to funerals, emerging in recent years as an alternative option. Designed primarily for families who do not adhere to religious beliefs or traditions, this service foregoes formal ceremonies.

The process involves transporting the deceased to our facilities, where necessary documentation is completed before cremation occurs without ceremony. It’s essential to note that families are not notified of the cremation timing and cannot select a specific time for the cremation.

Following cremation, the ashes are delivered to the family, allowing them the flexibility to hold a memorial at a time and place of their choosing, providing an opportunity to honor the life of their loved one in their own way.”

How do you handle cultural and religious differences when it comes to funeral services?

“As someone from a Hindu background, I have an inherent understanding of the cultural and religious nuances that shape funeral traditions. This shared heritage with most of my clients provides me with a unique advantage in comprehending their needs and desires.

Recognizing that every family is distinct, with its own set of customs and rituals, I prioritize honoring these individual traditions with meticulous attention to detail. By ensuring

that each ritual is performed in accordance with the family’s wishes, I strive to provide a funeral service that respects and reflects their cultural and religious beliefs.”

Share some of the challenges that you’ve faced while running Agnee Funeral Services, and how you’ve overcome them?

“One of the primary challenges we encounter at Agnee Funeral Services is ensuring the accuracy of documentation from stakeholders. Even the smallest error in paperwork, such as a misplaced letter or number, can jeopardize the cremation process.

To address this challenge, I’ve implemented a meticulous system for data management. Every piece of information we collect undergoes thorough double-checking before being processed. This system has proven invaluable, as it has helped us avoid any unsuccessful ceremonies thus far.”

What is the future for Agnee Funeral Services?

“At Agnee Funeral Services, I have a clear vision for the future that revolves around making the journey easier for both the deceased and their families. With several initiatives in the pipeline, rest assured that each event and detail planned is aimed at providing comfort and support during difficult times.

My ultimate aim is to serve my community with the highest level of respect and dignity. I firmly believe that assisting my fellow human beings during their moments of grief is my calling and duty.

It is truly an honor to fulfill this role, and I am committed to continuously striving for excellence in serving those in need.”

I COUNT YOU IN

Empowered women can change the lives of other women. They can create a ripple effect that can reach far and wide, inspiring change, inspiring inclusion. While there are many remarkable women who have been catalysts of change by leading the change themselves or motivating others, there is still a lot of work to be done in this area. I am looking forward to

“As society sees what women can do, as women see what women can do, there will be more women out there doing things, and we’ll all be better off for it.” Ruth Bader Ginsburg

the day when every woman becomes the catalyst of change herself not by taking long strides but with one step at a time. In the community and in the workplace, women can make a difference. If you hold a leadership position, try to support

the other women around you, instead of being driven by jealousy and unhealthy competition. It is no secret that a woman can be another woman’s worst nightmare. Many women suffer from the tall poppy syndrome and discredit the achievements

of other women. This cannot lead to anybody’s empowerment.

Every March the air gets abuzz with sessions, symposiums etc about women. It is the “International Women’s Day” month. Numerous forums and talks are organised to talk about women, her contributions, gender parity, inclusion and the unconscious bias that exists in the society. The slogans for 2024 are ‘Inspire Inclusion’ and ‘Count Her In. Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress’. Important and revenant messages! But I don’t agree with the use of the third person pronoun ‘HER’. Slogans and messages are better received and connect better when they are personalised. I would have preferred it to be, ‘Count Me In’ or ‘I Count You In’. Semantics in any message matter as it shifts the perception. Let us move away

to work doubly hard to get to where they aspire to. Some of us are able to stick to our paths, while some others have to sidestep and choose an alternate path. This choice may be a willing one or a difficult compromise. But whatever be our journey we need to celebrate our wins.

I spoke to five women from different walks of life, pursuing different career pathways to get a wider and varied perspective, and this is what they had to say.

from the ‘Her’ and start our conversation about ‘You’ and ‘Me’.

Along with empowering women, it is also important to activate them. There is a stigma attached to women who may take a break from their career to embrace motherhood. The risk of not able to return to work or the risk of the ‘break in service’ are real and a cause for concern. This is where women leaders within the organization can step in and step-up changes to help reduce the barriers to building a professional path by women and make flexible options available. A women can present this case better than anyone else. The truth of the matter is that not all women are fighting the same battles or winning the same battles. Some of us have it easy and make it our destination without much difficulty, while some others have

Vandana Patel, “International Women’s Day is a day of achievement, celebrating not only the endeavours of women in the past but also in the present. As we think about the meaning of this day, let us acknowledge the legacy we hold for women of the future and uphold values of female empowerment and independence. We also applaud the success of women of all ages, those who have shared their wisdom and those who are yet to grow in this world. To me it is a celebration of everyday women, my mother, grandmother, friends and teachers, those who have shaped my life and paved the way forward. Each person has their own connection to the women in their lives, however we all connected by a shared experience of support and freedom. Let’s us all honour the contributions of powerful and strong women, as Michelle Obama once said, ‘There is no limit to what, we as women can accomplish’.”

Sonali Saxena, “These days a lot of organisations, men and women use the International Women’s Day as an opportunity for another social media post or add to their carefully created facade. It has become another buzz word and another day to use big words and statements. For me International Women’s Day is about remembering all the work that the strong women have done before us to gift us a right to vote, right to work, right to get a degree and so much more. It is also about remembering that we still have some distance to cover and remove the barriers - safety of women everywhere, equal pay, right to make a choice about our body, financial empowerment in marginalised communities, and so many others. It is a day to not make a statement but ask what

can I do to make a change. So go and support a woman, be a mentor, thrive in female friendships, lift each other up and celebrate that every time as women’s day!”

Kala Philip, “International Women’s Day is not just a date on the calendar but a global movement that celebrates the milestones and progress achieved by women. Without equal access to education, employment pathways, financial services and literacy, reaching gender equality remains elusive. Organisations can take the initiative to ensure women are given equal opportunities to build their capabilities and strengthen their capacity to learn, earn and lead.”

Bhumi Bhatia, “As a woman, the mother of two daughters and just simply as a person, International Women’s Day matters significantly to me. It is an occasion that I utilise to generate discussion with my daughters. I advise them that they have all the ability to do anything they set their minds to. At the same time I have tried to make them aware of the struggle women have faced and still do face on the path of gender inequality.”

Tanya Talwar, “International Women’s Day is a day to reflect, acknowledge, give thanks and more importantly plan ahead. Within a multi-layered society where there are many challenges that face us, we have achieved a great deal from societal rights to professional and personal empowerment and yet, there’s still more we can do to embrace every woman’s individual circumstances and their choices. It is time to focus on allowing women to feel comfortable and confident in making the choices that make them feel empowered - whether that be to build a career, foster and grow a family or do a bit of both! This International Women’s Day, let us truly be inclusive and inclusivity begins without boundaries and judgments.”

Investing in women to accelerate progress does not just mean investing in new opportunities, it also includes investing in the existing cohort of working women who are looking to upskill themselves and who

may be looking for positions that could let them maintain the balance the aspire for in their lives. Investing in women to accelerate progress also means investing in men giving them better avenues to assist in child minding and child rearing duties.

Women leaders can play a massive role in ensuring other women are included and inspired and newer pathways of inclusion are explored through investment for continuing growth. Happy International Women’s Day.

“Join

us in the game of making a difference, One goal, One shot, One smile at a time”

Age is just a number when it comes to making a difference. If you have an idea, the universe conspires to bring it to life. Start your initiative today, because change knows no age limits.

It all began when Aaryaveer, an 8 year old realized that he and his friends had an abundance of unused sports equipment in their backyards. Upon research, he realized that many children from his generation have ample extra gear and that’s when the idea stuck, and rest is all history.

What started as a realization in Aaryaveer’s own backyard has now grown into a global force of change. Through his efforts, he has not only given sports equipment to countless children but also instilled in them the belief that dreams are achievable, no matter where you come from. He has sown seeds of empowerment, and as those seeds grow, they pave the way for a more equitable world.

Golden Wickets is an initiative which works towards giving those who are less privileged, the opportunity to enjoy the mental and physical benefits of playing a sport. This goal is achieved through donating new and fairly used sports equipment to those who are in need. Aaryaveer is

a hardcore sports enthusiast. Cricket, Rugby and Athletics being his favourite sports. A mathematician by heart, Veer loves formulating strategies and instant calculations on the ground. He loves spending time with his baby sister, Saisha, and

toy cavoodle, Bails.

As a part of this initiative, Veer has actively participated in a range of activities, each designed to make a positive impact on the lives of those in need. From engaging events to friendly cricket matches, providing nourishing meals for struggling families, to ensuring refugee families have access to sports equipment, every aspect of this initiative is a testament to the power of compassion and community. Golden Wickets has worked with Salvation Army, Asylum Seekers Centre. Community Care Inc, RSL Lifecare and NSW Department of Health. Veer recently participated in the Refugee Outreach program at Community Care Inc and donated sports equipment and here is what they have to say.

“Thank you for your generous donation of sporting equipment for our Refugee Outreach Program. Your donated equipment is given to refugees on bridging visas; they are not eligible for government benefits, and many live below the poverty line. Your donation is particularly beneficial for the children in these families. They can participate more fully in games with equipment that is better suited to their age and abilities. Thank you once again for your generous support.”

Red Sarees to tell a

Under the radiant sun, draped in vibrant hues of silk and cotton, the ladies of the Saree were jaunting towards a day filled with camaraderie, elegance, and unforgettable memories.

On February 18th, at 11:30 AM, approximately 40 ladies gathered at Circular Quay station, their animated conversations creating a soft murmur. However, the day commenced earlier for many, as they congregated in their neighbourhoods, traveling to the city together by bus or train. For those

accompanied by their Saree Sakhies, the journey itself became a canvas of joy, laughter, and countless photo opportunities. As they arrived at Circular Quay, the station transformed into a kaleidoscope of colours, with each lady embodying a vision of grace and contributing to the rich tapestry of Indian culture through their sarees.

Within this tapestry, I forged connections with women of diverse backgrounds, each saree narrating a unique story. Laughter echoed as anecdotes were shared, and the air was infused with the warmth of both new and enduring friendships.

Upon gathering at Circular Quay station, we embarked in groups towards the wharf

where our cruise awaited. Yet, in sarees, even a 5-minute walk morphed into a 20-minute odyssey, a testament to our penchant for capturing moments. Group photos were taken before boarding, and once onboarded, we settled on the upper deck, our day unfolded with a myriad of delightful activities. From Cruise Bingo filled with maritime trivia to a “Guess the Song” contest accompanied by singing and dancing, each moment epitomized joy and cultural richness.

During lunch, conversations flowed melodiously, entwined with the clinking of bangles and the gentle rustle of sarees. Dialogues became threads, weaving a fabric of shared experiences. Amidst

the laughter and camaraderie, a sense of sisterhood permeated. Emotions, as varied as the colours of our sarees, mingled—joy in the shared love for this traditional attire, nostalgia for tales of sarees passed through generations, and pride in the beauty of our cultural diversity.

As we neared the end of the cruise, some of us ascended to the top deck, capturing the loveliest views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House against an open sky. Moments seized with mobile cameras turned our gathering into a carnival of joyous celebration.

In the midst of this exuberant celebration, I reflected on the

significance of our gathering—a testament to the enduring beauty of tradition, the strength of shared bonds, and the joy found in embracing diversity.

As the day concluded, countless photographs immortalized our shared

moments. Each click froze a memory, a laugh, a shared secret—a testament to a day filled with the elegance of sarees and the enduring power of female friendships.

This day, where sarees weren’t just garments but stories waiting to be told, will forever linger in our hearts—a colourful chapter in the book of cherished memories.

It was indeed a treat for the music connoisseurs when local artists performed live in Sydney Pacific Hills Christian School Auditorium, Dural on March 3, 2024. Jazbaat Yaadon Ka Ek Safar-It was simply an unforgettable night ever. The hall was packed and it was indeed a successful show despite the hot muggy weather.

SCREAN Australia brought that magical era back to life for the music lovers of Sydney. A night of soulful numbers and nostalgia was created with vintage melodies from the golden era to give a befitting tribute to legendary singers Noorjehan madam, Abida Parveen, Farida Khanum, Jagjit Singh and Mehdi Hasan.

Performing Arts Centre auditorium was tastefully decorated, the candles displayed in complete elegance highlighted by a beautiful golden lace, flowers at the front with a Gramophone in the centre of the stage. The event was hosted by Sydney’s well known MCs Kumud Merani and Kartik Mohandas. The concert began unfolding with the lighting of the traditional lamp by Consul Mr Nirav Sutariya, Mr Sameer Pandey Deputy Lord Mayor, City of Parramatta, Abbas Raza Alvi and Dr Mike Hamidi.

On the night, the gracious Kumud Merani welcomed the audience and introduced Avijit Sarkar. Avijit is a talented singer who knows the art of mesmerising.

Avijit was joined by four female leading singers Rachana Bhatnagar, Heena Sachdeva, Rucha Lange and Bhagirathi Bhatt.Avijit’s entry was absolutely amazing dressed in Indian traditional black attire, the moment Avijit stepped on the stage he captivated his audience with his heart warming smile and delighted the audience with his soothing voice. Avijit kicked off the Jazbaat musical evening with a very soothing rendition of ‘Hosh walo Ko Khabar Kya - with Kumud Merani, recited the poem as it touched everyone’s heart.

Wearing a beautiful white lakhnavi saree with white gajra adorned in her hair the graceful singer Rachana Bhatnagar marked her grand entry with one of her favourite songs ‘Mujhse pehli si muhabbat’, Rachana’s voice is highly intoxicating her style of singing and her mastery of nuances were shockingly similar to that of Noorjehan, Farida Khanum and Abida Parveen.

The air was full of “Gayaki”- poetry laden with precise expression of

sentiments that can not be described otherwise: The first passionate duet of the evening followed by Avijit and Rachana ‘Awaz de kahan hai’. A nostalgic Noorjehan number set an exciting, passionate romantic mood for the evening.

It was an emotional moment when Avijit paid special tribute to late Pankaj Udhas ‘Diwaron se milke hamein rona accha lagta hai’. He ensured that he catered to the entire audience with a balanced mix of ghazals, Bollywood

film songs and soft numbers.

With each song number Avijit played on the Harmonium and engaged and captivated the audience who were totally mesmerised.

Charming Rucha Lange is a wonderful singer and indeed has some resemblance to the mystical Lata as far as the voice goes, she captured the audience’s attention with beautiful hit number of Noorjehan “Chandani Raatein’ was amazing, Rucha’s ‘Teri Khusboo Mei Base Khat’ with recita

tion by Kartik, the mellifluous voice of Rucha & Kartik transported the audience into a different era and mood.

Heena Sachdeva is a well trained vocalist in Sydney, Heena’s voice is highly intoxicating her style of singing reminds one of Shreya Ghoshal, she delivered the romantic tune “Niyat-eshauk”, which was followed by Heena’s exquisite classic “Koi Fariyad”. Bhagirathi Bhatt, a trained classical singer, provided a fresh dimension to the concert by singing duet with Heena ‘Chap tilak’in a deep voice and the audience could not stop clapping.

Multi-talented Bhagirathi enter-

tained the audience with her beautiful ghazal “Ahista ahista”, and also another old hit song ‘Saheb Mera Ek-Man lago yaar fakiri” it was an interesting choice and she captured the audience’s attention with her vocal brilliance. Bhagirathi’s performance not only took music lovers of pure classical music down the memory lane but also she left her ‘Chap’ and audience asking for more.

Towards the end, it has to be the evergreen Farida Khanum ghazal, aaj Jane ki Zid Na Karo by Heena Sachdeva. Heena made audience sing along as they clapped and eagerly participated.

Highlight of the show was finale song ”Dama dam mast kalandar’ by Rachana and Rucha the voices of both did fitting justice to the song of Abida Parveen, and they made audience dance and sing along.

Accompanying the singers were, very talented Abhijit Dan on the tabla, Sanjesh Nand played keyboard skilfully, talented Vir Chand on guitar, young Nepalese artist Sabin Ghising played the flute brilliantly, Sanket on Octapad and Parag Tijoriwala on the side effect instrument. The magic of Live band was brilliant. Running the sound system Abdul Sajwani did an excellent job.

Great audience and great food are the ingredients for a memorable evening. Well, the food stall from Ajay Raj Maya Da Dhaba serving delicious food and masala chai, Samosa at reasonable prices filled the hungry stomachs.

Jazbaat concert truly was a night when magic on stage was created by the beautiful singers of Sydney under the banner of SCREAN Australia. Jazbaat was more than just a concert for me; it was a journey of the soul, a reminder of the power of music to uplift, inspire, and heal and hence this show touched and altered my soul.

It is one of the most unique and exquisite experience of musical concert that one could ever witnessed. This concert proves to be perhaps one of the most magical local concert in Sydney history.

Pink Sari Inc. launches CanInfo & Care

One of the hardest things to hear is, knowing you (or someone you love), being diagnosed with cancer.

The shock can send anyone to panic mode. While the news is absolutely scary, we need to take immediate action. The medical fraternity will provide all the medical information. But what about the other aspects of life? What should the primary carers do? How to support the primary carer to help them look after the patient?

What if the primary carer is not that fluent in English? How will they attend every appointment and comprehend the pros and cons of the different treatment options and their side effects?

If the primary carer has to take break from work, what financial support is available? Did you know some primary carers are eligible for Centrelink Carer’s Allowance? It might be a smallamount but helps to pay for the car fuel and coffee to get through those million appointments. Considering some treatments can take nearly two years, every penny counts!

This sort of problem is just tip of the ice-

berg. Cancer affects not just the patient but the whole family – emotionally, physically, financially and professionally. I will let you read that again and ponder over it.

When a tragedy such as Cancer strikes, we need someone who can guide us, shed light on the journey that’s ahead, provide support for caretakers etc.

Pink Sari Inc. is a not-for-profit organisation run by a team of dedicated volunteers of South Asian background, whose vision is to improve the health and well-being of South Asian families. The main aim is to lessen the impact of cancer through education, information, advocacy, and support.

Pink Sari Inc.’s latest project ‘CanInfo & Care’ which is funded by Cancer Institute NSW, was launched on March 15th at Parramatta. This project seeks to establish them as a channel for culturally sensitive information and support for people of Indian subcontinental origin (including Indians, Sri Lankans, Bangladeshis, Nepalese and Pakistanis) who have recently been

diagnosed with cancer or undergoing treatment within the last 2 years.

The project aims to facilitate access to culturally safe and responsive services for the target group and achieve more equitable outcomes through a pilot scheme in partnership with the Crown Princess Mary Cancer Centre at Westmead Hospital and the Cancer Therapy Care Centre at Liverpool Hospital.

Interactive sessions with the target group and cancer professionals will be conducted which will provide attendees with useful

information, appropriate resources and links to support services in a culturally sensitive manner. The participants’ specific needs will be noted and addressed by directing them towards suitable services or towards cancer support service providers/ social workers.

These sessions can also help with navigating the health system, understanding Medicare, private insurance and gap payments, specific dietary needs, requirement for interpreters, counselling, transportation and financial assistance.

To bring things to perspective, imagine the magnitude of information that a patient and their carer needs to read, absorb and understand during such difficult times while simultaneously (and often solely) handling other household responsibilities. Cancer is itself daunting. When coupled with other barriers; the situation becomes scarier. Sessions like the ones mentioned above provide the need of the hour support and make the path less travelled a little less scary.

YouGo with Rajni-Let’s Be Mindful I AM WOMAN : Celebrating IWD with a special meditation

Another Women’s Day, another perfect opportunity to check in with yourself – are willing to be with yourself as you are, with love and compassion?

Do you have a mindful meditation practice yet that helps you navigate with calm and grace, the many highs and lows that life brings?

I share below a short yet powerful mindful meditation aimed at creating embodied awareness and self-acceptance. In the past 12 years of practicing yoga, this has been the most popular meditation with my women clients across the world. It’s easy, energising and empowering.

Duration: 5 – 10 minutes, practiced at any time of the day.

What you need: a quiet space, a mirror and an open mind.

‘I AM’ Meditation

To begin, find yourself a spot in your home that is comfortable and quiet.

Position yourself either sitting or standing, facing the mirror, maintain your spine upright but not rigid.

Soften your gaze and your facial expression.

Breathe at your natural rhythm.

Let your gaze rest on your reflection in the mirror.

Gaze deep within your eyes for a few seconds.

Gradually, rest your awareness on your body.

Visually scan your image-Notice your clothes, your posture, the expression on your face.

Simply notice.

Next, try to gaze within, behind the surface, notice how you are feeling.

Again, simply notice, without changing.

Allow thoughts, sensations, feelings and emotions to be present.

The idea is to accept without judgement who you are, where you are, how you are.

Bring your gaze back to your eyes. Lock eyes with your self and allow a minute of gentle breathing to pass as you continue to hold the gaze.

Slowly, speak out the affirmation below, allowing yourself a few moments to feel the sensation or emotion each word creates within you…

I AM

I AM WOMAN

I AM POWER

I AM COURAGE

I AM RESILIENCE

I AM KINDNESS

I AM CALM

Above all,

I AM PEACE. PEACE. PEACE.

Inhale through the nose long and deep and exhale slowly.

Repeat the words a few times (time permitting).

Slowly, unlock the gaze, smile and bow with folded hands in ’namaste’ to yourself. Make a silent promise of intent to return to this meditation the next day.

Step away from the meditation feeling relaxed and open yet alert and focused.

There YouGo! You have begun your journey towards an even-minded, empowered and energised state of being. May your connections with the world come from a place of calm and confidence.

Yours mindfully, Rajni

Narratives can take on various forms, and one particularly captivating method of conveying a message is through dance. Not only is this approach effective, but it also engages all five senses, embedding the message deeply in the audience’s mind. In the past, classical music and dance played a significant role in our films, even serving as a sought-after qualification for heroines. However, in today’s cinema, classical arts receive less emphasis. Nevertheless, some creative directors recognize the eloquence of this art form and seize every opportunity to include heart-touching classical dance sequences, adding aesthetic value to their work. This makes a bond between Bharatanatyam and cinema.

Sagarika Venkat, with her youthful energy, has embarked on a captivating journey through time, bridging the gap between classic black-and-white Indian films and today’s vibrant celluloid world. Her dance production, aptly titled “House Full,” recently graced the stage in Sydney as a production from Madeira Production. The highlight of the production is the visual treat of the cinema songs without compromising the quality of the traditional Bharatanatyam ignoring

the cinematic cosmetics of the original songs.

The heart of this production lies in its ability to seamlessly blend the nostalgia of cinema songs with the timeless elegance of Bharatanatyam. To make it appealing to the audience, Sagarika chose popular, featured songs set to the original lyrics and music from the evergreen film hits from different periods, and from language movies, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi movies.

In the captivating performance, after the welcome speech by Rishi Suresh, the curtain raiser was the enchanting melody of “Swagathanjali” from the movie ‘Chandramukhi’. This soul-stirring piece set the stage for what was to come—a celebration of rhythm, movement, and artistic expression.

However, it was the timeless classic “Kannum Kannum Kalandhu” from the 1958 film ‘Vanchi Kottai Valaiban’ that truly stole the spotlight. Imagine in that old song dual dancers gracefully weaving their steps, each embodying a different facet of the song. Their synchrony, their passion all replaced by Sagarika, single-handedly —it was a mesmerizing spectacle. And then, like a seamless transition in a dance routine, Sagarika stepped into both roles. Her grace, her energy—it was as if she wove magic with her every move. The audience held its breath, caught in the spell of her performance.

Celluloid Dancer

Sagarika’s choreography pays homage to the traditional art form, ensuring that its essence remains untainted by the glitzy allure of modern cinema. The result? A visual feast for the audience— one where the soulful melodies of yesteryears intertwine gracefully with the intricate footwork and expressive storytelling of Bharatanatyam.

As the curtains rise, Sagarika transports us through eras. The monochrome magic of old film reels merges with the vibrant hues of today’s screens. Her dances move with precision, her anklets echoing the rhythm of forgotten tales. The songs—once sung by legends— find new life in their graceful gestures. And there, in the spotlight, Sagarika herself becomes a bridge between past and present. Her eyes hold the secrets of both film reels and ancient scriptures.

As the final note lingers, the audience rises in applause. They’ve witnessed more than a performance; they’ve glimpsed the threads that weave our cultural tapestry. And in that theatre, Sagari- ka’s House Full becomes a sanctuary— a place where celluloid dreams meet timeless traditions, and where the magic of dance transcends mere entertainment.

The music support, which maintained the spirit of the

original renditions, enhanced the visual impact. Balalsubramanya Sharma singing of each one of the iconic songs was commendable. The orchestra comprised S.V. Balakrishna (mridangam), Mahesha Swamy (flute), and Pradyumna Sorba (Rhythm pad ).

When asked about this innovative concept, Sagarika shared, “Last year, Medura Productions approached me to create a programme for them. After extensive discussions, we mutually agreed to present a distinctive Bharatanatyam performance—one that had never been seen in Sydney before. We carefully selected 10-15 songs and curated our repertoire. My mother played a crucial role in choosing ‘Kannum Kannum Kalandhu’ from the 1958 film ‘Vanchi Kottai Valaiban.’ The title ‘Housefull’ was inspired by the tradition of displaying the word ‘HOUSEFULL’ on boards outside successful movie theatres in the olden days. Through this program, I aimed to create something unique that would captivate the youth while emphasizing the enduring impact of ancient arts on modern artistic expression.”

Bravo, Sagarika! May your steps continue to echo across generations, reminding us that art knows no boundaries— only the boundless passion of those who dare to dance.

BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), a global Hindu fellowship.

The BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi is the first traditional Hindu stone temple in the Middle East, and stands as a testament to the enduring friendship between India and the UAE, embodying the spirit of cultural inclusivity, interfaith harmony, and community collaboration.

After arriving at the Mandir, Prime Minister Modi was warmly welcomed by community members from across India and the UAE as well as religious leaders from diverse faith communities.

During an extensive interactive tour of the temple campus, Prime Minister Modi learned about some of the inspiring features of the Mandir that promote universal compassion, respect, charity, and learning.

Inside the Mandir, upon seeing His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, the Prime Minister bowed respectfully to the global Hindu leader, before participating in a short Vedic ceremony paying homage to the seven Hindu deities enshrined under the seven spires of the Mandir, themselves reflecting the unity of the seven emirates of the UAE.

His Holiness and Mr Modi then conducted the first grand arti (ceremony of light) of the deities – which was simultaneously performed by thousands at BAPS temples and homes across the world, with millions more watching online through the live webcast.

After meeting volunteers, children, artisans and others from all over the world who have supported the construction of this magnificent temple, Prime Minister Modi carved ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ into a piece of stone. The message of ‘the world is one family’ has been the foundational principle of the Mandir, guided by the life and work of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj.

Prime Minister Modi then arrived in the assembly where thousands had gathered to celebrate the opening of the Mandir.

In his keynote address, Prime Minister Modi said: “Today, the UAE has written a golden chapter in the history of humanity through this Mandir.”

“The BAPS Hindu Mandir is for all of humanity. So I have every faith that the Mandir will usher in a new age of faith and hope, bringing the whole world together in harmony and collaboration.”

“The magnificent Mandir that we see today in Abu Dhabi is because it was first envisioned years ago [in 1997] by Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Today, Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s heart will be glowing with joy at its fruition.”

“We must also thank my brother Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan [the President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi], because it is his generosity that has made possible a mandir so beautiful and magnificent. On behalf of all Indians, I thank Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed and the UAE Government.”

The Prime Minister then requested a standing ovation from the audience as an expression of heartfelt gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

In his blessings, His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj emphasised the impor-

tance of the new Mandir as “an abode of love, peace and harmony.” He then explained, “Harmony can be achieved when we do not expect harmony from others, but instead when we strive for harmony ourselves. For that, we must ask ourselves: ‘What can I do, what can I say, and what can I think to nourish harmony?’”

His Holiness then added, “Harmony is the power of God, and humility is the way of God. With this understanding, we can serve humanity.”

He went on to pray for the prosperity, progress, and peace of the UAE, India,

and the world.

Sharing his sentiments on this momentous occasion, His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahyan first thanked Prime Minister Modi for visiting the UAE. “We are proud to welcome a great friend from a great and friendly country.”

The Tolerance and Coexistence Minister also thanked His Holiness for building the BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi. He said, “Today marks the beginning of something special. The new Mandir will be a place of worship and also a community centre.” He concluded, “I share in your optimism. I share in your pride.”

In his address earlier in the assembly, Brahmaviharidas Swami, who has been leading the Mandir project from conception to completion, also thanked the generosity of the UAE leadership and the leadership of Mr Modi, and applauded the friendship between the two that helped make the Mandir possible.

In the morning, His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj performed the Vedic consecration ceremony that ritually infused the sacred images with the divine presence of God.

Together, the consecration ceremony and dedication assembly formally opened the BAPS Hindu Mandir to the world as a gift to generations, to nations, and to the future.

More Singhs than Smiths as South-Asian players surges in Australian Cricket

SINGH HAS CONTINUED TO EXCEED SMITH AS THE MOST COMMON NAME AMONG REGISTERED PLAYERS IN AUSTRALIAN CRICKET.

Registration data for the 2023-24 season showed that Singh was the most registered surname with 4262 entries while 2364 Smiths were registered. The number of Singhs first exceeded Smiths in 2018-19.

This significant trend highlights the growth in South-Asian registered participation across all areas of Australian Cricket, as well as the opportunities to grow attendances with India’s men and women’s teams and the Pakistan’s men’s team to tour Australia next summer.

Further emphasising this growth, Patel was the third most common surname with other typically SouthAsian surnames Sharma, Khan, and

Kumar among the 16 most registered on Play HQ.

Cultural & linguistically diverse (CALD) Cricket participation continues to grow across Australian Cricket with a 36% increase since the last preCOVID season in 2019/20.

This comes as Cricket Australia (CA) actively pursues strategies to integrate diverse communities into Australian cricket. Australian Cricket’s Multicultural Action Plan, launched in December by Usman Khawaja and Lisa Sthalekar, is a significant part of cricket’s commitment to fostering inclusivity within the sport.

As well as increased participation, Australian Cricket is looking at ways to ensure cricket lovers from multicultural communities attend more matches by providing welcoming and inclusive environments and experiences.

In the 2024-25 season the white ball tour by Pakistan men, the five Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series and the three-match ODI series against India

women will all provide tremendous opportunities for South-Asian communities, particularly, to get out and show their love and support for the game.

James Quarmby, CA’s Head of Participation said:

“The continuing growth of registrations from multicultural communities is a testament to the progress being made towards our goal of being a Sport for All.

“We want people from multicultural communities to play a major role in all parts of the game at community and elite level, whether that is as players, coaches, officials, administrators or fans.

“With Pakistan coming for a white ball series and India’s men’s and women’s teams both in Australia next summer, we hope the surge in registrations from multicultural communities will be reflected in even bigger attendances at those matches.”
