What is NAIDOC week? How start and what does it celebrate?

NAIDOC week is a big celebration for Indigenous people and a highlight on the Blak calendar – it is our Blak Christmas.

While reconciliation week focuses on relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, NAIDOC week is purely to celebrate our culture and achievements.

We get to celebrate who we are and what we have achieved, and we get to support all the deadly Blak businesses.

It’s a time for our community to celebrate being Blak, with local events that are accessible to all, such as Burramatta NAIDOC. Or you can relax at home and enjoy the many films and TV series written or produced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander filmmakers or staring fabulous Blak talent.

A brief history of NAIDOC

Held in the first week of July, NAIDOC has

a long history of activism and celebration.

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee and it dates back to the 1920s and the fight for better living conditions and rights for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

It continued into the 1930s with the boycotting of Australia Day and the establishment of The Day of Mourning. In 1955 the event was expanded to a week-long celebration held in July.

Over the years the event shifted to become one of celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, culture, and history, our survival and our resistance. With more than 65,000 years of history we need at least

How did it celebrate?

a week to celebrate our deadliness!

This year’s theme: ‘For our Elders’

This year’s NAIDOC theme is “For our Elders”. Our Elders are the trailblazers who fought tirelessly for all we currently have, and they continue to fight for the rights and freedoms of our people.

Sadly, we lose too many Elders at relatively young ages. Recently we have lost Uncle Jack Charles, Uncle Archie Roach and Yunupingu, among many others. In our communities, loss of our Elders too early is heartbreakingly commonplace.

NAIDOC awards

An event that is very popular is the National NAIDOC awards which acknowledge the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to our communities. There are a range of categories including sports, creative arts, youth, Elders and lifetime achievement.

The “male” and “female” categories unfortunately miss a valuable opportunity to celebrate our leaders who are beyond the gender binary. Introducing gender-free categories would allow trans and gender diverse mob to be equally celebrated, as they also work tirelessly to make life better

for the generations to come.

The NAIDOC ball

The annual NAIDOC balls held across most states and territories are also a highlight of the week. Much attention is paid to the fabulous outfits and jewellery, as this is one of the biggest events of the year and one of few opportunities to come together and celebrate a deep sense of pride in what we have achieved.

It’s also important to consider the accessibility of the key NAIDOC events, such as the awards and balls. Indigenous peoples will be out of pocket at least A$120 for a ticket to the awards and balls, and organisations including Blak businesses are ticketed at $220, with $300 tickets for corporate allies. During a cost-of-living crisis, $120 is a big ask.

Given NAIDOC is a national celebration, more funding is needed from government and local councils to fund mob to host

celebrations. It would be fabulous to see government and mainstream organisations provide funding to Indigenous owned and controlled organisations to host NAIDOC events that are community-led and accessible to everyone.

What does NAIDOC week mean for nonIndigenous people?

Unfortunately NAIDOC week often leads to unpaid labour for many Indigenous people in workplaces, as they are expected to organise NAIDOC events and celebrations.

During NAIDOC week, non-Indigenous people can show their support by not putting extra pressure on Indigenous staff and being involved in the organising of NAIDOC events. Employers could also include a day off for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff so they can participate in cultural celebrations.

Non-Indigenous people can also support Blak-controlled businesses such as caterers and florists. But this should happen throughout the year as well.

They should also listen and learn throughout the year, not just during NAIDOC. Engage with free content such as First Australians, After the Apology, First Inventors and Mabo. Read some of the wonderful books written by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

During NAIDOC we also see deadly collaborations with big corporations which is a great way to showcase Indigenous excellence. This year Indigenous artist Rubii Red collaborated with Xbox to create a hand-painted console with profits going to Aboriginal kids in out of home care.

Happy Blak Christmas you mob!

Anthony Albanese, the Australian prime minister, sampled Indian street food at

Harris Park on Friday, 23rd June 2023 with his Australian counterpart MPs Michelle Rowland and Andrew Charlton and their partners. Anthony Albanese tried Indian street food there, days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi advised him to go to Little India in Harris Park.

Albanese visits Little India “chaat, jalebi” on Modi’s advice

“Great Friday night in Little India, Harris Park with @Charlton_AB. We tried out Prime Minister @narendramodi’s recommendations of chaat at Chatkazz and jalebi at Jaipur Sweets – a winner!,” the Australian prime minister tweeted.

Modi was quick to respond to Albanese’s tweet. “Sounds like a memorable Friday night, imbibing the best of Indian culture and

culinary diversity. A winner indeed, like the India-Australia friendship,” Modi tweeted.

Modi, during his Australia visit last month, said, “I have heard that Chatkazz ‘Chaat’ and ‘Jalebi’ from Jaipur Sweets at Harris Park is very delicious. I want you all to take my friend

Australian PM Albanese to that place.”

With enthusiasm, Prime Minister Albanese indulged in a plate of chaat, a mouthwatering Indian street snack known for its sweet and savory flavors. As he took a bite, his face lit up with delight, unable to contain his admiration for the delectable taste. The combination of spices, tangy chutneys, and crispy textures left a lasting impression on his palate.

PM Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese last month laid the foundation stone of the ‘Little India’ gateway at the event at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney.

Prime Minister Albanese’s visit to Little India showcased his genuine interest in exploring and embracing diverse cuisines. Through his positive experience with Indian street food, he not only celebrated the culinary delights but also fostered cultural exchanges between Australia and India. Such interactions promote diplomatic relationships, mutual appreciation for diverse cultures, and the joy of discovering new flavors that bring people together.

Elevate-Celebration of Multicultural Women in Business

The next speaker was Kaitlin Cuell, Project Lead at Service NSW, who discussed how Service NSW supports start-up companies through its initiatives and programmes in NSW. She also spoke about the support and guidance that business relationship analysts offer at every stage, from planning to marketing businesses.

Julia Finn MP Granville, the final keynote speaker, discussed how COVID previously affected small businesses and how current issues like inflation and rising loan rates are confusing small business owners about making investments and purchasing businesses. Therefore, it is essential to look into any possible government grants and support, which are available out there.

On June 29, 2023, the Community Migrant Resource Centre hosted an event ‘Elevate – Multicultural Women in Business’ at Novotel Parramatta. The purpose of the event is to highlight the achievements of immigrant and refugee women entrepreneurs and to raise awareness of the support programs CMRC provides through Business Connect program in partnership with Service NSW (a dedicated and personalised NSW government program).

At the beginning of the program, CMRC CEO Melissa Monteiro welcomed guests and attendees, saying that the Elevate Event is an attempt to recognize businesswomen who run small businesses. They were there to showcase their work and share their knowledge with the wider community. Commenting on CMRC’s contribution to new migrants and refugees, she said, “We are a resettlement organisation and we believe that collaboratively we can provide much-needed services to the wider community and develop their skills and self reliance by providing training and support.”

Two more women were highlighted at the event – Dativah Nitsios of Deventure Tours, and Madhuri Rebello of Neo Body Laser Clinic Parramatta, who shared their success stories. The main message was that if we want to achieve our goals, we must work hard and conquer all obstacles. Their victories served as a reminder to “Never Give Up” and “Keep Trying.” The program’s emcee was Kumud Merani.

A diverse group of women from various cultural backgrounds attended the program, they networked and exchanged cards with each other at the end of the program. Women took full advantage of the opportunity to pose for photos and shop for clothing and jewellery at the vendor businesses’ stalls.

By organising events like Elevate, CMRC wanted to ensure that women get the visibility they thrive for and inspire others to follow. Informing and educating new immigrant and refugee women about entrepreneurship is crucial. Women entrepreneurs can inspire each other by sharing knowledge and skills.

Saree Club And Her Biggest

She migrated to Australia many decades ago with her family. Her saree collection symbolises the stories of her familial memories of culture, tradition, and history. One such story she shared with him the first time I met her was the story of courage, perseverance, grief, and passion for creating change through awareness. Her purpose; is to raise awareness about skin cancer’s impacts on our lives.

Our chance conversation happened when

we met at our Saree Club’s biggest morning tea last year. Though fleeting, the conversation left an impact on me. And this year, she co-hosted Saree Club’s Biggest Morning Tea. Her name is Dipika Gandhi.

She is a leader, motivator, humanist, educator, and connoisseur of Sarees and their origin stories. She founded Saree Club to connect women passionate about sharing their love of sarees through stories. Her purpose: is to advocate for meaningful conversations and raise awareness about all the important issues that impact women’s lives.

And last year, she laid the foundation to host the first Saree Club’s Biggest Morning Tea. This year she was the co-host of the event. She is someone who believes that from little things, big things grow. And I got to witness that magic first-hand. She is Poornima Menon.

What started as a small backyard gettogether of around thirty ladies last year burgeoned into a mini event this year, attended by fifty ladies, with a renowned dermatologist Dr Kavita Injeti, invited as a guest speaker. A medical dermatologist with an extensive experience in Paediatric dermatology, Dr Injeti, addressed the ladies and shared information about different types of skin cancers. The moral of her presentation and story was to look out for signs and never to underestimate the power of simple actions. The protection of simple habits of “slip, slop, slap, Seek and Slide” can provide.

Following this presentation, many “She’s’” shared their lived experience stories with cancer. Some were carers and survivors.

Last year, I attended the event, as I got re-inducted to support a family member with cancer to channel my shock into action. And this year, to honour the lives our family has lost and to remember the life lessons they left us. This year’s additional theme was wearing a saree representing the colour of cancer you are raising awareness about. I wore a linen silk saree with a kaleidoscope of colours, and the story behind my saree is this.

She loved dressing up. Her favourite thing to do was collect necklaces; made of beads, precious and semiprecious stones of vari-

ous colours, shapes, and sizes. She had one in every possible colour to match the bold kaleidoscopic collection of her sarees. And she paid attention and cared for every one of them. She was my Amma!

And Breast cancer, her nemesis!

The rock of wisdom she left me, her daughter, and fellow women like her was to: ‘Pay attention to every bead-shaped thing that comes our way’.

He loved taking photos and videos, His

favourite thing to do was to document every move of his grandchildren. He documented their every move as if they were celebrities,

He captured their nonsensical rhymes with the wonder of watching a Mozart-level performance, And every tantrum is an epic drama worth preserving,

With unwavering devotion and love, only grandparents can shower!

He approached every aspect of his life like an adventure,

Their stories and mine were a stark reminder that behind every statistic, there is a family whose lives are impacted along with the diagnosed ones. Cancer Council states that 1 in 2 Australians are diagnosed with cancer before age 85. And urging the community to Host Biggest Morning Tea, their effort to help raise vital funds to bring us closer to a cancer-free future.

Through our collective efforts, the funds we raised (13,000+) this year made us hopeful that the day is not far away when research will relegate pink, peach, yellow and blue as only a choice of hue.

Rupa Parthasarathy is a member of the saree club who believes in using the power of life stories to inspire action. And she urges the readers of this article to commit to paying attention to early detection and remain focused on staying positive if you or a loved one ever has to face any Big C as the nemesis.

Through Our Lens - a Festival of Two Short Plays

Adakar Theatre Group launched a script writing competition Through Our Lens in January 2023. The two winning scripts of emerging South Asian writers about the inter- generational Australia were selected. Sonal Moore writer of the first play “Mangalsutra” and Vivek Asri writer of the second play “Packing” brought their diverse perspectives into their winning scripts under the artistic direction of Saba Zaidi Abdi. According to Saba purpose of this festival was to highlight the distinctive and overlooked tales of immigrant communities.

The English language drama “Mangalsutra” was directed by Sudip Sauden. It was set against the backdrop of two marriages exploring the relationship between love, denial and traditions. The curtain opened to a kitchen where Veena (Saba) is discussing about her daughter’s perspective grooms with her husband Nirav (Dinsha Palkiwala). Two generations of women

Veena (Saba Abdi), Meera (Mansi Gandhi) have varied reactions when their daughters desire to wed someone from a different culture: Veena, a first-generation mother, is hesitant to marry her daughter to a Chris-

tian man Kit (Martin Byrne-Quinn), and Meera, a second-generation mother, has second thoughts when her daughter Asha (Dana Strbik) wants to wed a Muslim guy Amir (Ricky Somaiya). Though they had numerous reservations about their daughters’ choices, they ultimately come to the conclusion that things are not all that awful. All of the actors, including Bea (Ananya Dixit) Asha’s younger sister, did justice to

their characters and the message was effectively delivered. Sonal’s screenplay was strong, but the audience thought that there was sometimes no clear distinction between the past and the present and that there was a bit too much going on at once.

The second play “Packing” penned by Vivek Asri and directed by Saral Somanaiya, follows Deepak’s compelling journey as he leaves everything in India hoping for a better life in Australia. Deepak (Hemal Joshi) arrives in Australia in search of a better life, leaving his young family behind, missing out on many precious moments with his wife Manjit (Sarwat Zehra) and daughter, who are waiting for him to come. He finally manages to get permanent status and decides to leave when When Jenny, whom he marries for a visa then divorces, starts phoning him and his immigration agent Raj (Munish Arora) starts bilking him of additional money. Unable to explain his situation to his wife, Deepak questions the validity of his choices. His friend Rohit (Anshul Chopra) tries to help but Deepak’s expectations are shattered when his wife Manjit urgently phones to warn him that all flights have been cancelled due to the Covid shutdown.

The audience could identify with the play as they all went through similar situations. Acting as well as direction was superb except at one instance when the play seemed to linger. The idea of using a phone to facetime Deepak’s wife Manjit’s emotions was innovative, and Sarwat Sehra excellently captured it through the expert use of her facial expressions. Lights and sounds were

also ingeniously used.

The set was designed by Lochi Odgers, graphic designer was Kashmira Sachania, Sound was handled by Naishadh Somaiya, make-up artist was Mala Mehta, props and costumes were done

effectively by Mani Dixit and Anu Shivaram.

Well done Adakar on shedding light on untold stories, celebrating our cultural roots, and offering fresh perspectives on life’s many journeys.

YouGo with Rajni – Let’s Meditate Mindful Meditation – Breaking Step 2: Guided Mindfulness Meditation

Welcome to the second part of this t hree-part series on Mindful Meditation broken into the following steps:

Step 1: Sitting mindfully (focus on posture)

Step 2: Mindfulness Meditation (focus on breath work and flow of thoughts)

Step 3: Ending your meditation practice gracefully.

In the May edition we explored how to sit mindfully embodying a posture of wakeful dignity which is essential for an effective meditative practice. In this edition, we will look walk through a short session of guided meditation.

Guided Mindfulness Meditation

Begin with Step 1 – Mindful sitting - settle yourself in a comfortable but wakeful sitting posture. Place your hands either on your knees or in your lap, whatever us is more comfortable.

Now follow this guided meditation:

4Directing my attention to my breath, I take a few deep breaths, staying with each breath through the whole cycle of inhaling and exhaling.

4 I become aware of the quality of my breath.

4Is there calmness in the way I breathe?

4Is my breath short and heavy or calm and regular?

4I take a few deeper breaths.

4Now, I’m consciously breathing with an awareness of calm and peace.

4I bring my attention to my feelings.

4 I identify the feelings that I have as I breathe in and out.

4Am I feeling happy, joyous, relaxed or agitated, upset, angry?

4I spend time exploring my feelings.

4 I allow myself to observe my feelings and visualise myself stepping away from them.

4My feelings are floating away from me.

4I breathe in peace and breathe out peace.

Becoming the Observer

4I allow myself to smile and to rest.

4 I guide my attention from my mind to my abdomen.

4My attention now is on my expanding and contracting abdomen.

4Breathing in, and breathing out, I follow the calm, rhythmic motion of my abdomen.

4 I take slower and deeper breaths and notice all the different sensations of breathing.

4 I listen to the sensations from my arms and legs.

4 I listen to the sensations from my face.

4 I do not interpret them as messages of discomfort.

4My sitting posture is stable and firm, like a small mountain.

4 I continue to sit gracefully and maintain a soft gentle expression on my face.

4Every few moments a thought or a sensation tries to interrupt my focus on my breath.

4 I allow my focus to shift to these thoughts as an observer.

4 I am not distracted by the many thoughts

Amitav Islam has a classical music background and is a well-known performer, who is often referred to as “Jagjit Singh of Western Australia” by his fans and admirers. Amitav’s fascination towards ghazals, especially towards ghazal maestros like Mehdi Hassan Khan Sahab, Ghulam Ali Khan Sahab and Jagjit Singh

Gurpreet Singh, who accompanied Amitav on Tabla, is also a leading Tabla player in Australia, he hails from Punjab Gharana. He has shared the stage with some of the biggest Classical and bollywood artists in the past including Ustad Dilshad Khan, Pt. Purbayan Chatterjee, Ustad Tari Khan, Jazim Sharma, Prithvi Gandharv and many Gurmat Sangeet maestros.

Riti Bhattachary and Tarini Masuwadi, students at Chakras Performing Art in Newcastle run by Shrimati Savitri Naidoo, gave a dance performance to kick off the evening. A Sydney-based singer named Bhagirathi Bhatt

In the second half, up-and-coming young talent Danvi Bhatt sang “Phero na Nazar se Nazaria” with her beautiful voice and received

a big round of applause from the audience. Following her, local artist Seema Bharadwaj sang a few popular ghazals.

During her next 45 minutes, Amitav and Gurpreet once again captivated the audience with a soulful performance. The night was scheduled to end at 8:30pm, but the audience continued

requesting for more ghazals until 9:15pm.

The Fabric of Family

Dipika Gandhi

Download Our App JULY I 2023 www.DesiAustralia.com 54 Life Stories

It was 26thJuly 1984 when a single shocking incident saw my bubbly, affluent and healthy family become victims of a roller coaster of tragic events that loosened the threads of bonding and faded the colours of affection to eventually weaken the fabric of family.

It was this year when my only brother was kidnapped at the age of seven never to be found till this day. Shock, fear, anxiety, hopelessness, and anger were the emotions that governed our daily existence. The vacuum created living with one less family member was profound. Home and school didn’t seem a happy place anymore and parents lost all zeal and zest in life. It took me a while to accept how our home would be temporarily inundated with CID police, private detectives, and security personnel to protect me and my two sisters from the daily ransom calls. My parents left no stone unturned as they travelled extensively across states and at times to meet distinguished astrologers all to follow any clues of his whereabouts.

Life continued the slow path and soon my parents succumbed to depression, temporary loss of memory where each day we would come home from school hoping for a smile and hoping they would recognise us. Patience, hope, and resilience were our newfound pillars of strength and survival.

The uncertainty and unpredictable life showed no mercy – this time my mother was admitted in the ICU for over a month for being unconscious and unresponsivea neurologic condition that caused temporary coma. The brief visits of the ICU were a painful snapshot of her suffering and there was total respect for the team of doctors and nurses who shouldered the responsibility of extensive medical care and support.

During this time, I took a semester off from college. Time and pain had no boundaries -a few years later mum was diagnosed with Malignant Melanoma.

She survived for two years before passing away in 1993. What I remember from those two years wasn’t a typical picture of a gloomy patient, I saw a woman willing to live her life to the fullest and enjoy the intricacies of life every single day. That was when I noticed my mum’s greatest quality.

My father finds less mention as he was experiencing his own mental health issues.

Whilst the thread of parental support was weakening, friends played a huge role in strengthening the fabric with their mentorship, companionship, and moral support. Their existence was a real blessing in disguise. They made carbon copy notes, photocopy of textbooks, visits and meals to the hospital, timely donation of blood, helping pay my college tuition fees, lending me sarees and dresses for important events and much more. I must confess I longed to be around them as I laughed with them, cried with them, and completed my studies with them.

Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. Entering the journey of married life opened a whole new world of love and care. My new family was welcoming, and I felt a strong sense of belonging. I was rebuilding my life and felt like a decomposed seed ready to sprout. I was redefining my character and wardrobe which meant discovering the simplicity and elegance of wearing a saree that soon became a symbol of stability and grace.

It was in the year 2000 when we migrated to the land down under where Sydney became our new adopted home. It was in 2008 when my father passed away. He was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma and suffered from a heart attack. It was a sad feeling losing both parents, but I had carried the baggage of resilience and strength and continued to embrace my motherhood journey and watch our two boys conquer special milestones. New friendships continued to expand across continents adding new colours and patterns to the

fabric of family.

As much as I loved being Indian and celebrating my traditions, my mind was in constant conflict trying to keep up between the two cultures. So, during my earlier years in Sydney as a homemaker, I engaged in volunteering activities in school and wider communities promoting Incredible India through food, culture, and clothing.

However, being part of my religious community and joining Poornima Menon’s Saree Club, allowed me to stay connected to my roots, grow in spiritual strength, and extend my social network. Being part of the Saree club is a representation that women are not bound solely by the fabric of the five yards but by the collective pride in who we were, where we have come from and what we will be.

For the monumental role friends and family have played in my life, I became a more giving person and continue to inhale my blessings and exhale gratitude. Each friend and family member has contributed in their own unique way to help me rise to the challenges and shape me to who I am today.

While my mother was an epitome of strength, my friendship over the years is an embodiment of support, respect, and care.

Families and friends are like fabric, although they tend to unravel at times each can be stitched back together with love, compassion and understanding.

Life Global Australia aims to raise AUD$1.5 million over the next three years, with a special focus on partnering with fully vetted and well-established charities with a shared vision to achieve their goals. The first partner charity is Project ‘Life’ based in India.

Project ‘Life’ serves as an essential conduit for humanitarian efforts, focusing on building schools, providing holistic educational opportunities, empowering women, and providing critical health solutions especially for thalassemia, which is a preventable fatal blood disorder prevalent in the region. Life Global Australia seeks to create a lasting impact on the lives of those living in remote communities by joining forces with Project ‘Life’.

The Australian launch event was attended by guests from Australia and India. These included Meetal Koticha Shah, Joint Executive Trustee, and Rushikesh Pandya, Chief Commercial and Development Officer of Project ‘Life’. Their passionate speeches underscored the shared commitment and tireless efforts to uplift the impoverished communities of Gujarat. Also present were the Group CEO of the event sponsor, Mr Ryan O’Hare, who delivered a very supportive and encouraging speech, and the

Olympic torch bearer and GOPIO (Oceania) President, Harmohanji Singh Walia.

Attended by approximately 70 guests from the Sydney business communities including the Indian diaspora, the launch event proved to be a resounding success. Driven by the unwavering dedication of the Life Global Australia team, the event showcased the three major programs the charity supports through its funding: Education, Women’s Empowerment, and Health.

Under the Education program, Life Global Australia endeavours to build schools in remote areas, providing access to quality education for the less privileged. The Women’s Empowerment initiative delivers vocational

training, equipping women with skills that lead to sustainable incomes and a brighter future. The Health program focuses on educating communities, conducting blood screenings, and facilitating blood delivery to support the reduction and, eventual, eradication of thalassemia in these areas.

The successful launch in Sydney served as a centrepiece to satellite launch events held on the Gold Coast, sponsored by GOPIO Gold Coast; in Brisbane, sponsored by Jagdeep Foundation; and in Melbourne sponsored by local Indian diaspora, demonstrating the charity’s commitment to extending its reach across Australia.
