As with preceding years, not a dull moment was to be found during the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee. All of the spellers amazed the audience with their breadth of knowledge and passion for spelling.

For the past twelve years, Indian Americans have dominated the Scripps National Spelling Bee. This year, was no different as Ananya Vinay became the 13th consecutive Indian American to be crowned the champion! Learn more about her and third place contestant Mira Dedhia in this issue.

An issue that is close to my heart is the lack of attention and investment for sustainable sources of energy because in near future, our oil supplies globally will become depleted. We need to begin investing in energysustainable energy sources.

What job/position do you plan to pursue and why? I plan to pursue a job in the fields of finance and economics, hopefully to become a financial officer for a large company one day. Math has always been a favorite subject of mine. I loved sitting in math class, learning new methods, solving tough problems‌ Math was just my subject.

When I became exposed to economic trends in one of my classes in 11th grade (based off of changes due to inflation, investments and returns), I was drawn to this new subject. Combining mathematics and economics in college, I want to learn what it takes to mathematically manage finances to benefit the economy through a job as a financial officer or advisor.

I would love to talk to him about his segment on the "invisible forces" that motivate our daily actions.

Which issue (global or local) is close to your heart, and why? Working with Camp I Am Special

for the last few years, I feel extremely passionate about the proper treatment and accommodations for individuals with special needs. After working with so many of these individuals, I have learned so much about patience and love, and I have learned all that they have to offer to this world.

They don't deserve to be treated as different, but rather as people with different things to offer.

What is your little-known talent ? I am not as bad at singing as most people would think... I also really enjoy acting.

What job/position do you plan to pursue and why? I hope to become a neurosurgeon and will strive to create a lasting, positive impact on all those I encounter. I also aim to advocate and raise awareness for pertinent issues around the globe, especially increasing access to medical care for under-served populations. Research has always been an interest of mine, and I plan to study neurodegenerative diseases, in particular, Alzheimer’s.

What is your favorite quote? “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” –James Baldwin If you could have breakfast with anyone, who would it be and why? Paul Kalanithi, his thoughtful, unceasing dedication to pursuing a meaningful life is a constant inspiration for me to do the same. In addition, our shared passion for English and medicine would make for a unique and insightful conversation, and I would have so much to learn from his perseverance, intelligence, and profound musings.

Which issue (global or local) is close to your heart, and why? Education has always been an issue close to my heart. I believe that education provides the opportunity to create lasting change, and is necessary in order to achieve social equality. By improving access to education, we will not only impact one generation but all those that follow it.

What is your little-known talent ? I love art, and enjoy painting.

Throughout my career, I hope to significantly augment the quality and accessibility of medical care in underdeveloped regions.

What is your favorite quote? “Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” -Søren Kierkegaard.

If you could have breakfast with anyone, who would it be and why? I would have breakfast with Carl Sagan. His unique contributions to astronomy and introspective thoughts on the relation between science and spirituality would make for an interesting and eye-opening conversation.

Which issue (global or local) is close to your heart, and why? The issue of accessible healthcare is very close to my heart. Conversing with healthcare professionals from China to Jamaica and serving on a medical mission trip to India made me cognizant of the notion that something as integral as medical care is often financially and physically unavailable. I believe that the basis of any thriving society is health and that every individual should have the ability to receive medical treatment.

What is your little-known talent ? I am also an avid singer-songwriter.

What job/position do you plan to pursue and why? I hope to become a pediatrician because I love working with kids. I also have a great passion for biology and helping other people have a healthy life so that they are able to accomplish their hopes and dreams. I also hope to go into international policy making so that the changes that I make are not limited to the small area that I am in but also the whole world- I hope to work in food sustainability as well as education reform fields in the UN, UNESCO, and WHO. What is your favorite quote? People know you for what you’ve done, not for what you plan to do. – Unknown If you could have breakfast with anyone, who would it be and why? Which issue (global or local) is close to your heart and why? Food sustainability, pollution, and education. Though it is not one particular issue, I think these three problems that the world faces are some of the most dire and the ones that need the most attention. Food sustainability is a issue that forces developed countries to take a look into what they take for granted, and attempt to help other countries. Most countries do not have the means to produce the food that they need to, and the advent of industrialization has also led to major unforeseen issues. By solving the problem of hunger in developing nations, it is

possible that many of the diseases associated with these countries may also be limited. As for pollution, we only have one world, one house- and it is this Earth. By not being careful and sending in large amounts of pollutants and plastics into the air, the short-term joy that we may receive will soon be replaced with the long term health struggles, food struggles, and environmental struggles as well. Education reform has been a topic of interest for me since two years ago, when I had to give my platform speech for Miss Stanton on the story of Malala Yousafzai and her foundation, the Malala Fund. We commonly take the education that we receive for granted, but there are tens of hundreds of countries that are struggling to teach their young citizens how to read or how to write.

Education is becoming an increasingly important element of our society, and thus by providing education to those who do not currently receive it, there is a chance that impoverished societies may have a chance of succeeding.

What is your little-known talent ? I love planning and redecorating things.

2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee: Indian Americans Continue to Succeed

s with preceding years, not a dull moment was to be found during the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee. All of the spellers amazed the audience with their breadth of knowledge and passion for spelling. Incredibly, the winner Ananya Vinay is the 13th consecutive Indian-American to win the bee and the 18th of the past 22 winners with Indian heritage. Of the top 15 finalists, 13 were Indian-American, an incredible feat!

Ananya Vinay, 12, from Fresno, California, was declared the champion in round 36 when she correctly spelled “marocain,” which is defined as “a dress fabric that is made with a warp of silk or rayon and a filling of other yarns and is similar to but heavier than canton crepe.” After a long day of spelling correctly, Vinay earned a $40,000 cash prize.

Rohan Rajeev, 14, from Edmond, Oklahoma, placed second after misspelling “marem.” Mira Dedia, whose mother Lekshmi Nair competed in the 1988-1990 national bees, placed in third when she misspelled “ehretia.”

Vinay Sreekumar; brother Achuth, 7 How did you prepare for the spelling bee?

I used the computer to study words. I would type them up, listen to them in the online dictionary, and try to understand all the information. Another thing I would do was try to understand all the language patterns and roots of the word. I could see, hear, and feel the word in that way.I would divide the words by language of origin so that I can understand the patterns. I would always look up the stories behind words which was great fun!

One of the words I was asked came from my Social Studies textbook! So you could find words anywhere! Reading is the always the basics for good spelling. It is important to make connections between words as it is impossible to memorize all words. For example,the root Pano means bread and I would connect it with Panera bread!

In the final moments of the competition, what were you feeling?

I was feeling a little tense, but excited to spell my words. I was just trying to keep focused in my 26

mind so I could spell my words correctly. It is an amazing experience. I just focused on the word and the pronouncer Dr. Bailly, and did not worry about other things.

What is your favorite subject in school?

Science because I enjoy finding out why things happen. My main interests are biology and chemistry. The tiny particles that make things function are very interesting to learn about.

What are your favorite activities outside of school?

Playing volleyball and basketball, reading, and writing. I also love playing with my brother and hanging out with my friends and watching movies.

Who do you consider to be a mentor?

My biggest support is my family. They are always there for you and keep me motivated and help me always.

What relevance does being Indian American have to you? Has it given you an edge?

I am proud to be an Indian American. I love the values, fun festivals, food and stories. I think anybody can win if they have a talent and if they are ready to put the work in and pursue their dream!

My family supported me tremendously and I am sure all families would do the same for kids whether in sports or music or dance or any field.

I also believe prayers from my family and grandparents helped me!

Many people feel that a young achiever is made of a sheer spark and plenty of luck. How much

of a role did hard work made in your pursuit?

Is there a mantra that you would like to share with other young aspirants?

I think sheer spark and plenty of luck will come to you only if you work hard. Super hard! I had a knack for spelling and loved language. I made a silly mistake in 2016 when I panicked on stage and that made me even more motivated. I took that as a challenge, worked on staying calm and focusing on my word while I am on stage. I made a plan and divided the words into small groups by language of origin and worked hard every single day regularly. The recipe for success is straightforward whatever your dream is. Believe that you can do it. Do more than required. Stay focused until the finishing point!

I prepared both by studying with my mom and by doing independent work, mostly on the computer. When I was working with my mom, she would ask me the words or the word roots, and I would spell them for her or say the root’s definition.

When I was working independently, I was quizzing myself on online tests that my mom and I made or products we bought.

In the final moments of the competition, what were you feeling?

I was just feeling thankful and extremely blessed that I had made it to the finals. I was definitely overwhelmed by all that had happened in the past 24 hours, but I was trying to stay calm. I was trying to picture in my head that my mom and I were back at home spelling in our office.

What is your favorite subject in school?

Math because it universal and most of the time you can only have one right answer. The subject itself is very objective and there are not too many ambiguous, gray areas with math. Math is also needed in the majority of fields of work that you go into, and math is applicable to everyday life as well.

What are your favorite activities outside of school?

recitals and competitions and gone to a few music camps. I play classical songs as well as modern pop songs that you hear on the radio. Playing the piano for me is relaxing, and I have especially used it as an outlet when things have become stressful with the bee.

Who do you consider to be a mentor?

I consider my mother to be my mentor. She has been my spelling coach the past two years, and I have learned so many invaluable lessons from her. I have learned various aspects of spelling and words, but more importantly, she has taught me many life lessons, and she has always been my role model. She is hardworking, tenacious, and she was willing to dedicate and sacrifice everything to help me with the bee.

What relevance does being Indian American have to you?

Has it given you an edge?

I am proud to be Indian American, but I don’t think that saying that gives me an edge in the competition. Indian Americans have won the bee for over 10 years in a row—that might motivate future Indian American students to work harder because they know that people similar to them have won in the past. It definitely doesn’t make us smarter with the words, however.

Many people feel that a young achiever is made of a sheer spark and plenty of luck. How much of a role did hard work made in your pursuit? Is there a mantra that you would like to share with other young aspirants?

It is true that there is an element of luck involved in the bee.

Having said that, I think you increase your chances of getting lucky on stage by working hard

and amassing as much knowledge as you can about words and their etymology. I think one message that I would want to spend to young students is that you should always believe in yourself. Even though your goal may seem impossible, you just have to tackle it with passion

and give it your all.

oga was never born, thus, it never dies.

Yoga is not an historical event or a philosophy devised by a great thinker of the past.

Its source lies dormant within each one of us as divine potential. The heart of yoga is hidden inside your very being. It is the union of Atman with Paramatman. When you enter samadhi, the union of yoga is created. Yoga is the experience

of oneness with God. It is eternal; without beginning and without end. Various yogic paths are described in the holy text of The Bhagavad Gita, such as Bhakti Yoga (devotion), Karma yoga (action), Hatha Yoga (physical), Jnana Yoga (knowledge) and Raja Yoga (the royal path). The techniques were handed down by Lord Krishna to his disciple, Arjuna, to teach him that he, and we, are the incarnation of the God-being.

Evidence of yogic practices go back more than 6,000 years and Shri Patanjali’s “Yoga Sutras,” the first written code, was recorded some 2,000 years ago. But yoga itself existed long before.

It was handed down via the oral tradition from rishis to valued students so the practice would live on among devout seekers. The eternal yoga is born in you and through you. It is reborn again and again. While the techniques of yoga are many, the experience of yoga is Oneness.

Could Patanjali, Buddha or Christ have created yoga? No. The numerous yoga disciplines that have evolved over the eons are like different doors. Each, if practiced intently, is an entryway to the divine unity of yoga. Every realized yogi

who followed different paths experienced the origin of yoga within. Yoga was revealed to the great rishis. What they taught were yogic techniques that ultimately reveal the mystery of yoga that is always present within.

As a student of yoga since my youth, I had the great privilege to study with one of the greatest Kundalini Masters of the 20th century, His Holiness Swami Shri Kripalvanandji, a direct descendent of the Lord Lakulish Lineage of Masters.

Because of this blessing, I have personally experienced the origin of yoga. My guru revealed to me the secret method of awakening the unifying experience of oneness that yoga is.

If yoga is awakening to your own divine omnipresent presence, know that you are the eternal undivided whole. You always were and you always will be. Becoming too involved in worldly matters makes us forget. If we can remember, from moment to moment, that when yoga is born from within, it is eternal yoga.

6 Tips to Help Your Child Excel in Math W

e generally think that the life of children is free from any worries, and so we long for such a carefree lives. Reality, though, is different. Children do have their own set of worries with their studies being the most prominent among them. With increasing competition, even the syllabus of junior classes is increasingly complicated. Math is especially notorious for being extremely complex, with many students dreading the subject. If your child is one to run from Math, here are a few ways to build a harmonious relationship between your child and the subject:

Emotional Support If your child feels they cannot reach or maintain an average performance level in mathematics, he/she might get discouraged and give up further efforts to improve. They accept their weakness as a condition and generally lack the confidence. Here, as a parent, you can support them emotionally and show your confidence in their ability to perform well. Take an active interest in determining the exact cause of their poor performance. In many cases, stronger emotional support and an active participation in your child’s study schedule can be the help needed for your child to gain confidence and begin endeavors afresh. Such well-structured support can not only go a long way in improving performance, but also gives your child the confidence to know you are with them on this journey. As the famous saying goes, “One and One makes 11.”

Strengthen the Foundation Start at the root level instead of directly touching the advanced level as most of performance related issues arise from weak foundation. The best way to do that is to first study their math books to acquaint yourself with the foundational knowledge required to perform well. Then im38

part the same knowledge to your child using simpler language. Initially, focus on the foundational knowledge only. Once the foundation is clear, it’s possible many of your child’s problems would be solved.

Build Confidence Many brilliant children who lag behind only in math may adopt a wrong approach towards the subject. They would rather focus at further improving their performance in other subjects they are good at and start neglecting math completely. Understandably, it further impacts their performance. Hence, instead of scolding them on their poor performance in math, you should instead praise them on their excellent performance in other subjects and show your confidence that if they can master the other subjects they are equally capable of excelling in Math too. Along with boosting the confidence you should also be ready to start working on their weakness.

multiplication, division and addition using visuals. Instead of words, the books rely on graphics to explain the concept as well as to give practice exercises. The reason is that while the child is grasping the new lessons quite excellently he is also forgetting the old lessons at the same time. So, it is very important to conduct periodical tests to assess the overall performance of children. Here you need to keep your expectations modest.

On poor performance, just ask them the reason try to find an exact solution. Be patient, within reasonable time the performance will keep on improving.

Communication Presentation and communication skills play a vital role here.

Break the complexity of the words and present the Math concepts in a child-friendly language. The best way is to go for a tentative approach while practicing any teaching method to ascertain whether that method is actually benefitting your child or do you need to change. These details highlight your initiative and developed capacity as a leader, role model, and doer” - University of Pennsylvania There is definitely a common theme here. Words like “impact,” and “inspire” highlight why “leadership” has become such a buzzword this applica-

tion cycle. Admissions officers across Ivies, Stanford, UC’s, and other Top 50 schools ask themselves these type of questions while reviewing applications: How has this student made lasting change to their club/ team/etc through his leadership? How has he inspired others with his attitude? How can this student bring that spirit to my university’s campus?

How do we achieve this lofty goal ?

Create a Summer Bucket List Whenever we try something new, our brain cells expand, opening up new worlds to us.

Get the kids together and make a list of all things you want try this summer. Add new activities, new places to visit, books you want to read, etc.

Stick it on your fridge! This will be your Summer Bucket List. If not every day, cross things off every week and watch the kids and yourselves grow together with new experiences!

Earn Screen Time We all know free time often ends up meaning screen time. To make sure screen time is accounted for, fill a jar full of folded notes or ice cream sticks with chores/lessons/homework kids can do before they get screen time. Attach five minutes of screen time to each activity. So, to earn 30 minutes of screen time, kids have to hand in tokens for six completed tasks.

This has four benefits. Of course, it limits gadget time. Kids learn the importance of earning something they want. They will voluntarily find ways to help out around the house. Also, the summer will include much needed writing/ math practice for them to grow academically.

Win win!

Boredom Buster Closet Fill a closet with board games, activities, chalk, sprinkler sets, and other fun activities. Also, stick pictures of activities to do like baseball, cycling, back yard fun, and whatever else interests your child. Bonus would be toys they haven’t played with in a while. Whenever your kids come to you complaining of being bored (which is often code for wanting TV time or mindless eating!), direct them to the Boredom Buster Closet.

Be sure to keep the One in, One Out rule.

When they take out one activity and are done playing with it, they have to put it back in before they take out the next one.

With a little bit of prep work, you are sure to have a blast this summer ensuring the kids grow mentally, physically and academically before their new school year begins.

The Real Cost of College It may not be what you think.

How much will your family end up paying for college?

Your household’s income may have less influence than you think – and some private colleges may be cheaper than you assume.

Private schools sometimes extend the best aid offers. Yes – it is true that the more money you earn and the more assets you have in a tax-advantaged college savings plan, the harder it becomes to qualify for financial aid. Merit aid is another matter, however; most private colleges and universities that boast major endowment funds support healthy, merit-based aid packages.

These scholarships and institutional grants – awarded irrespective of a family’s financial need – can reduce the “sticker shock” of a college education.

A study from the National Association of College and University Business Officers found that grant-based aid effectively cut tuition and fees by an average of 48.6% in the 2015-16 academic year. If your child can fit into the top quarter of a college’s student population in terms of grades or achievement, merit aid may be a possibility. A college that might be your student’s second or third choice might offer him or her more merit aid than the first choice.

Relatively speaking, some universities demand more from poorer families. An analysis published in 2016 by New America noted 102 U.S. colleges with endowments of greater than $250 million that charged the poorest students more than $10,000 in tuition for the 201314 academic year. Out of more than 1,400 colleges and universities New America studied, hundreds expected households earning $30,000 or less per year to pay the equivalent of half or more of their earnings on higher ed.2 The state legislature of New York made a striking move this spring. It decided to waive tuition for many full-time undergraduate students at both 2-year and 4-year public colleges and universities within its borders. To qualify for this tuition break, households had to earn less than $100,000 annually – and students had to pledge to work and reside in New York state after they earned their degrees. Programs like the Tennessee Promise and the Oregon Promise have made community college tuition free in those states.
