Quartzsite started out as a watering stop in the desert. There was a shallow well just west of the Main Post Office, where a brass plaque stands across the street from the Tyson’s Well Stage Station Museum on W. Main Street. Quartzsite has been a rock hound’s paradise since the 1960’s. Thousands of acres of dispersed BLM camping draws upwards to million visitors a year. The population of Quartzsite Arizona grows enormously during the winter months. In addition to the people arriving there for the annual gem and mineral shows, the winter weather in Quartzsite is warm and dry. Quartzsite is located just 17 miles from the California border at the intersection of I-10 and Hwy. 95. RV snowbirds enjoy the warm winters camped in over 60 RV parks and 11,000 acres of BLM Long Term Visitor Area camping, with five 14-day free camping areas. Besides over a thousand vendors each year, Quartzsite is known for its RV and ATV friendly atmosphere. ATV trails lead in all directions from town with beautiful 6

desert scenery along the way. With the influx of RV snowbirds there’s plenty to do all winter long. Seasonal Restaurants, Swap Meets, RV Dealers, Live Music, Senior Activities, Fine Art/Quilt/Arts & Craft Shows abound, Bingo, Rock Hounding, Gold Hunting, Gem & Mineral Classes, Dancing, Solar, RV Repair, and more! Arizona Western College provides many classes for credit and pleasure at Quartzsite Learning Center. SCENIC ATTRACTIONS A rock hunter’s paradise surrounds Quartzsite with agates, limonite cubes, gold, and quartz being just a few. In town, the Hi Jolly Monument honors the Arab camel driver, Hadji Ali, who took part in an unsuccessful 1850’s U.S. War Department attempt to use camels as beasts of burden in the desert. To the south rise the Kofa Mountains. Historic and scenic areas include the Spanish Wall, Crystal Hill, Tyson Tanks, and Tyson Wells Museum. South in the Kofa Mountains is Palm Canyon, a tight gorge and home of Arizona’s only native palms, reached by a steep but rewarding climb. Farther south is Castle Dome Peak. By Jenn Jedidiah Free for RocksInMyHead™ If Louisiana is the “Sportsman’s Paradise”, then Quartzsite has to be the “Outdoors Paradise”. Our little town is surrounded on all sides by a vast desert full of amazing things to see and do. With abundant sunshine and mild winter temperatures much time can be spent playing outside. Here is a brief look at what Quartzsite has to offer to anyone who ventures outside of town. Rock Art Sites- Just a few miles from Quartzsite, petroglyphs can be found at Dripping Springs, Tyson Wash, and the Palo Verde Rock Art Site. The Tyson Wash site also has grinding holes and a small cave. Intaglios- large rock drawings on the desert floorare found at several locations around Quartzsite, Parker, and Blythe and the only ones known to exist in the entire desert southwest. Stone cabins and ghost towns- The remains of abandoned mining towns and cabins are abundant throughout the desert around Quartzsite. One of the largest and best preserved is Swansea, the site of a copper mine dating from the late 1800’s. Old cabins, mines, and ghost towns offer much history as well as treasure hunting and photo opportunities. Treasure hunting- If you are a rockhound, gold prospector, or both, treasure hunting abounds in every direction around Quartzsite. Quartzsite boasts numerous worldclass rockhounding sites from searching for crystals at Crystal Hill to mining world famous Fire Agate, gem grade Chrysacolla, agates, fos10

sils, and much more to satisfy the experienced and amateur alike. Explore on your own or join the Gem and Mineral Club to participate in a group excursion or class. For the gold prospector, opportunities to find that elusive yellow metal are plentiful. Both placer and lode deposits occur in abundance in the mountains and washes surrounding Quartzsite. While there are many active mines and private claims, vast amounts of public lands still exist ready to yield treasure to an eager prospector. You can go out on your own or join the metal detecting club to participate in their outings. The LDMA and GPAA also have claims in the Quartzsite area. Other things to do- For hiking, try a day trip to Palm Canyon or explore several arches in the Plomosa and Buckskin Mountains. For ATV’s and 4-wheel drive vehicles there’s hundreds of miles of roads and trails to take you into every nook and cranny imaginable. From slot canyons and blue-faced mountains to cool oases and tall peaks, there is something for everyone in our beautiful desert. So, welcome to our town. We’re glad you’re here. Stay awhile. Hi Jolly Pioneer Cemetery Arizona’s adventure with camels began in 1855 when Jefferson Davis, then secretary of war and later president of the Confederacy, was sold on the idea of importing camels to build and travel on a wagon road through the Southwest. A buyer was dispatched to the Middle East where he bought 33 then loaded them on a ship modified to accommodate their bulk and sailed to Indianola, Texas. Another batch of 44 of the beasts followed. Authorities sent to the Middle East for men who spoke camel, and that’s where Hadji Ali comes into the story. He and another camel driver, Yiorgos Caralambo (who came to be called Greek George) were hired to teach the soldiers how to deal with the animals. Soldiers couldn’t pronounce Hadji Ali, and he became known as Hi Jolly. The camels were a great success. They could carry two or three times as much as Army mules. They could go without water for much longer than could horses or mules, and most of the desert forage was fine with them. But the Civil War intervened, Jefferson Davis changed jobs, and without his support the project was abandoned. Some of the camels were sold; others escaped into the wild. Hi Jolly bought two of them

and operated a freight route between the Colorado River and the mining towns of eastern Arizona for two years. In 1880, he became a U.S. citizen, started calling himself Philip Tedro and married Gertrudis Serna of Tucson. When he retired, he moved to Quartzsite and prospected around the region using a mule. He died in 1902. The camels thrived for a while, but eventually died out. However, as late as the 1930s and 1940s there were unsubstantiated reports of camels spotted in the wild. One story was that of the Red Camel, which roamed the desert with a headless human skeleton on its back. The Hi Jolly Cemetery is the most visited location in Quartzsite.

Arizona Peace Trail Bullhead City to Yuma

By Shanana Rain BearCat Whether you have a Quad, Side by Side or a Jeep, the “Arizona Peace Trail” is a great way to take daily rides or planned overnight trips in the beautiful Sonoran Desert. The Arizona Peace Trail Committee is establishing a 700-mile trail from Bullhead City to Yuma so that enthusiasts can take their off-road vehicles for long trips. At least a dozen regional OHV (Off Highway Vehicle) clubs, in three counties, have participated in the inventory of places to visit throughout the 3 Counties. Their mission is to Develop a loop trail system utilizing existing trails and roads in Western Arizona connecting Bullhead City to Yuma and assist the land managers in maintaining the trail system. Work with City, County, State and Federal Agencies to keep the desert roads and trails open for public use. Work on projects for our community, our highways an our public lands. Promote the sport of Off Highway Vehicle(OHV) riding safety, with awareness and respect for the environment.

Sanders, chairman of the Arizona Peace Trail Committee the group is hoping to develop a recreational opportunity and develop areas for camping and preparation so that people can go on longer trips. July 20,2015 The La Paz County Board of Supervisors approved to submit a grant application to the Yamaha Outdoor Initiative to help pay for signage on the La Paz County portion of the Arizona Peace Trail. The amount of funds the County is seeking is $14,980.46. By Janet Collier - Town of Quartzsite The winter months vending season is a very busy time of year for the Town of Quartzsite. In fact, this is the peak season for the Town’s local businesses, vendors, visitors, off-roading, and shoppers alike. With all the hustle and bustle going on all over Town, we have a few tips and pointers to help with your success! If you plan on vending within Town limits, there are several requirements that must be met. The Town requires every vendor to fill out an application packet which can be found on the Town’s website, at Town Hall. The packet contains an application, state required licensing eligibility, proper identification, and an AZ tax transaction number.

You will want to start by contacting a local show owner or manager for a show dealer application and space rental for specific site details. Next, complete your Town of Quartzsite vendor application paperwork. And remember each show location is independently owned and operated and must be contacted individually. The Town strives to make this process as efficient and easy for you as possible. We work with each of the show locations, owners, and managers toward the common goal for making Quartzsite a friendly, inviting place for all to enjoy!

Transit Service

By Janet Collier - Town of Quartzsite The Town Transit Service was branded The Camel Express by popular vote! The Transit remains dedicated to providing safe, clean, convenient transportation for our senior, disabled populations and visitors. The Town provides curb-to-curb round trip local service Monday â€“Friday 8:30am-3:30pm. Our Regional trips include Yuma, Blythe, and Lake Havasu City on a weekly, bi-weekly and monthly basis. Scheduling a ride up to two weeks in advance guarantees you can make your appointments and have enough time to complete your errands.

Our fleet (of three vehicles) is designed to meet your transportation needs, supporting continued independence and services improving quality of life. Two of our vehicles are equipped with lifts for those with mobility aids or those needing assistance boarding the bus. During the winter season our local schedule includes the Long Term Visitor Areas south on Highway 95 and the Short Term areas north of town. All pickups will be made at the BLM kiosk

All Service Animals are welcome. Transit Riders Guides, schedules and Senior Center menus are available on the busses, at Town Hall, the Towns web site, Business Chamber and Senior Center. CAMEL EXPRESS FARES Local - $3.00, Blythe $10.00, Yuma, Lake Havasu City $15.00 If Parker is your destination La Paz County Transit provides that service weekly on Wednesdayâ€™s for reservations call 928669-6155. Cost is $5.00.On the cutting edge of expanding service to the general public the Town of Quartzsite is partnering with ADOT to complete a short range transit planning study. The goal of the study is to develop a sustainable transit system open to the general public. Further information on the project and ability to comment are available on our website. Things to See & Do

There is a lot of history in this area, from the pioneers and settlers who came here and settled into the town that is now Quartzsite; to prospectors and ranchers, whose decedents still live in the town. Many of the old buildings in town are on private property and aren’t accessible due to their deteriorated conditions, but you can still see them from the roads. Some places are open to the public; many are accessible by driving and hiking.

TYSON’S WELL STAGE STATION MUSEUM Housed in Charles Tyson’s restored former stage stop, this museum displays mining equipment and houses the old assay office from the Mariquita Mine. The museum also exhibits photographs and personal possessions of some of Quartzsite’s most colorful residents. It is located next to Silly Al’s Pizza on Main Street. A restored stagecoach station operated by the Quartzsite Historical Society. Exhibits relate Quartzsite, its citizens, and locals mines. Collections date from the 1860s and include artifacts, mining equipment, a miniature village, and photographs and personal papers. The Quartzsite Historical Society opened Tyson’s Well Museum in February 1980, after extensive restoration work. The original structurally sound walls were retained and others were rebuilt. A shell of stabilized adobe brick was built around the original walls to protect them. Artifacts were gathered from interested citizens, as well as photographs and old mining equipment. When the building was finished, these articles were placed inside as well as outside the building. The dirt floor in one of the rooms was maintained for authenticity. The ceiling of the main room consists of saguaro ribs, and the original fireplace is still

in use during the winter. Outside in the yard is the original assay shack from the Mariquita Mine, which offers a peek into the everyday life of the miners. Also, in the yard is the handiwork of Walter Barrett, a little village of cement and stone houses built during his retirement and donated to the museum. Just to the west of the Museum are the ruins of the Oasis Hotel, which is our next restoration project, with fundraising currently underway. www.quartzsitemuseum.org/ CELIA’S RAINBOW GARDENS Located at the north end of Quartzsite Town Park on Plymouth Rd. This 20 acre section is a beautiful nature trail with several special areas along the trails. It includes a miniature pioneer village, a mining display, rock and gem pavilion, veterans’ area, and much more. It’s a work in progress started by Paul & Joanne Winer, the parents of Celia Anne Winer, an 8-year old who died in 1994. The volunteer project has become one of the most visited parts of the area. Be sure to take your camera to capture your own memories of the flora and fauna while walking the trails. QUARTZSITE ROCK ALIGNMENT & INTAGLIOS The area north of Quartzsite was used as a training ground for General Patton’s troops during World War II. On this trip you will see rocks laid out in the desert for airplanes to see, spelling out QUARTZSITE and forming an arrow pointing the way. Up the road from the Quartzsite Rock alignment there is a picture that would also be best seen from the air. It is the Fisherman Intaglio, the outline of a fisherman drawn on the desert floor by ancient Indians. Both the Rock Alignment and Fisherman Intaglio are a short walk from the asphalt road.

- The Bouse Fisherman is a 30-footlong intaglio (or geoglyph) of a person spearing fish. The ancient rock art was made by scratching away the rocky crust and etching the desert soil. While the age and origin are unknown, it is believed to have been created centuries ago by native people. Recent research has led many to believe it depicts the god Kumastamo, who made the Colorado River flow by thrusting a spear into the ground. Take Arizona 95 about 5.4 miles north of Quartzsite to Plomosa Road. 6 miles up the road look for fences on your left. Inside the farthest fence you will find the Rock Alignment and 1.3 miles farther up the road you come to a second “scenic view parking” sign.

Park and follow path up the hill to see the Intaglios. THE GREAT TREE Quartzsite’s Desert Survivor was dedicated as part of Arizona’s Centennial, Witness Tree, verified to have witnessed Arizona’s statehood from February 14, 1912, to February 14, 2012. This Ironwood tree is 1,050 years old. The Trail head is just north of County Court on Plymouth. It has witnessed the ages from the same location and recently in its history has become accustomed to the yearly winter population boom of Quartzsite, located along Interstate 10 next to the Arizona/California border. KOFA NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE For 57 miles, US 95 cuts through the desert of Southwest Arizona - quite flat, perfectly straight and aligned exactly north-south, and interrupted only by the small town of Quartzsite. In the mild seasons of winter and early spring, much traffic uses the road, bringing sun seekers from all over the US to Yuma and on into Mexico, but few travel to this region in summer, when temperatures of over 120o F are not uncommon. Rain falls on only a few occasions each year - the summer thunderstorms that affect the higher areas of Arizona rarely extend this far. South of Interstate 10, US 95 is bordered by the Yuma Proving Ground to the west and the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge to the east - a protected area 25 x 40 miles in extent with no paved roads or facilities of any kind. The refuge is an excellent place for viewing desert plants and wildlife, rock climbing, exploring old mines, or just camping in remote wilderness. CIBOLA NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE Cibola National Wildlife Refuge is located in the flood plain of the lower Colorado River and surrounded by a fringe of desert ridges and washes. The refuge encompasses both the historic Colorado River channel as well as a channelized portion constructed in the late 1960’s. Along with these main water bodies, several important backwaters are home to many wildlife species that reside in this portion of the Sonoran Desert. Because of the river’s life sustaining water, wildlife here survives in an environment that reaches 120 degrees in the summer and receives an average of only 2 inches of rain per year. We invite you to visit and enjoy the many wildlife-oriented activities the refuge has to offer and enjoy the scenic beauty of this oasis in the 48

desert. Getting There from Blythe, CA: Drive approximately 3 miles west on I-10 to Neighbors Boulevard/78 exit. Travel south on Neighbors for 12 miles to the Cibola Bridge. After crossing the bridge, continue south for 3.5 miles to headquarters. AHAKHAV PRESERVE The ‘Ahakhav Tribal Preserve was established in 1995 and currently consists of 1,253 acres of wilderness area and a 3.5 acre park. The preserve is centered around a reconstructed Colorado River backwater, which offers a variety of activities including fishing, canoeing, birding, and swimming. The preserve also maintains a 4.6 mile fitness trail as well as playground and picnic facilities located in the park. The preserve serves many purposes. Continued on Page 49

One is to provide recreational and learning opportunities to the surrounding community as well as visitors. The other is to serve as a revegetation area for endangered and threatened plants and animals native to the Lower Colorado River Basin. The Lower Colorado is an area that faces many problems, from damming that causes changes in natural stream flow, to a variety of invasive species. The preserve is an ongoing project to study methods of revegetation and restoration that may be used though out the area. POSTON MONUMENT This Memorial Monument marks the site of the Poston War Relocation Center where 17,867 persons of Japanese ancestry, the majority of whom were United States citizens were interned during World War II from May 1942 to No-

vember 1945. All persons of Japanese

descent living on west coast farms, businesses, towns, cities, and states were forcibly evacuated by the United States military on the grounds that they posed a threat to (he national security. This massive relocation was authorized by Executive Order 9066, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 19, 1942. This Memorial is dedicated to all those men, women and children who suffered countless hardships and indignities at the hands of a nation misguided by wartime hysteria, racial prejudice and fear. May it serve as a constant reminder of our past so that Americans in the future will never again be denied their Constitutional rights and may the remembrance of that experience serve to advance the evolution of the human spirit. Based on the “other” board game that sounds similar, this version is custom designed for the town you live in or visit.
