La Paz County is ready for Nov. 5th General Election

On October 1, 2024 Arizona State Elections Director Lisa Marra and staff flew into Parker, AZ to perform the Logic and Accuracy (L & A) testing. Officials from the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office presented La Paz County Elections Office certification of the state-required Logic and Accuracy Testing of election equipment for the equipment to be used in the November 5th General Election. La Paz County Elections Director Bob Bartelsmeyer said he and his staff are ready for the General Election. Per state law, election equipment used for early voting must successfully pass a Logic and Accuracy test conducted by the Secretary of State’s Office prior to the start of early voting. The testing procedure ensures the machines are operating correctly ahead of voting time. In-person voting requires the deployment of voting equipment to be accessible for all voters, including voters with disabilities, as they’re used as ballot marking devices. The voting equipment was tested and verified to be secure. La Paz County has 11 precincts and 8 polling places within the three Supervisorial Districts. Early voting has begun. Early ballots were mailed out on October 9th! Any questions or concerns about your ballot, please call County Recorder’s office at 928-669-6136. Quartzsite voting will take place Tuesday, November 5th Hours: 6am-7pm at Community Center, 295 E. Chandler St. To learn more visit https://azsos.gov/ or arizona.vote.

Town of Quartzsite’s Proposition 402 will be on the ballot for the General Election November 5, 2024. What is PROPOSITION 402?

Quartzsite voters will be asked to decide the following ballot question, “Shall the Expenditure Base of the Town of Quartzsite be permanently Adjusted by $2,850,000.00?”

□ A “YES” vote shall have the effect of allowing the Town to adjust its base expenditure limit.

□ A “NO” vote shall have the effect of not allowing the Town to adjust its base expenditure limit.

You might think, but wait, didn’t voters approve this last year? Proposition 401 was passed by voters in November 2023. It was a ONETIME override of $1,100,000 in excess of the Town’s expenditure limitation for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025. Now the Town will return to the voters for a permanent solution.

Expenditure limitation goes back to 1979 when property taxes were increasing at a rapid rate faster than personal incomes. Arizona voters approved amending the constitution to limit local government spending. They limited expenditures to the levels of the fiscal year 1979-80, with adjustments for inflation and population growth.

Arizona Constitution was then amended to provide options to accommodate these growing financial needs. This allows voters

VOTE! ANNA CAMACHO

for La Paz County Assessor

The platform I run on is Public Service. It always has been about public service. I have never forgoen who I work for, as I continue to serve all property owners of La Paz County. I am always listening and actively trying to resolve any issues regarding property values by staying active at the Capital, where the new laws are being created and voted on.

I take great pride in actively participating in the due process of laws and the effect it has on all property owners in the State of Arizona.

There are many issues that might benefit or hurt our County, and it is my desire to stay abreast on these issues. I will continue to be a voice for the people of La Paz County, where I have had the pleasure of serving for the past eight years as your La Paz County Assessor. I would love to continue serving as your elected county official. I have been employed by the County for almost 19 years, 15 years with the County Assessor’s office and 3 years as a permit technician in the Community Development Department.

I grew up in the Parker School District aending first grade through eighth grade at Le Pera Elementary, then graduating from Parker High School. My son and grandsons are growing up with the same friends and families that I grew up with, in this new generation here in the county. My family and I love our county and feel totally blessed to be a part of this wonderful community.

It’s no surprise that I have witnessed many changes throughout my employment with the county; some good, some bad. Some things should have been changed to beer serve the communities, but for whatever reason, have remained the same. This continues to frustrate me as well as the public. I believe it is the responsibility of elected officials, when discovered by us or the public, to fix policy and procedures that are not working. I believe some people just refuse to listen to a problem because it clearly doesn’t affect them, so they spin it or just ignore it. What is the definition of insanity in my book? To continue doing the same old thing with no resolve. I will continue to make the best decisions for you, the taxpayers, on valuations and protection of your properties. I will continue to fight for changes on issues that maer to you, when brought to my aention and affect you directly. I am always listening and watching, even when people think no one is. I guess that’s what some people call creating chaos. I will gladly wear that title. I remember who I work for.

God Bless Everyone!

Arizona Revised Statutes §11-805 requires all counties to adopt or readopt a comprehensive plan and update it every 10 years. La Paz County’s current Comprehensive Plan, originally adopted in 2005. It was last amended in 2010.

A comprehensive plan is a long-term strategic document that articulates a community’s vision, goals, and strategies for future development, growth, and conservation. It is developed with input from stakeholders, as well as key public and elected officials. The primary purpose of a comprehensive plan is to help communities identify solutions to local challenges, anticipate trends, and guide future growth and development.

The La Paz Comprehensive Plan will include six topic areas or elements. Within each element (or category), several relevant topics will be thoughtfully discussed. Land Use, Circulation, Economic Development, Public Facilities and Services, Natural Resources, and Water Resources. Community engagement is a vital aspect of the comprehensive plan process. A coordinated public outreach effort allows citizens and stakeholders to assist in the creation of a customized plan, which builds consensus and support for the implementation efforts. The project website will include additional information and provide the community with an opportunity to get engaged and submit questions, suggestions, or concerns.

The Salvation Army updates

Getting closer to our Red Kettle time of the year. We are recruiting volunteers to RING for us. Please come see me. You pick your own schedule of days and times. We provide everything needed, even chairs or stools for you, too. Great way to get a friend and spread the holiday season to all. Yes, you can play an instrument when out with the kettle stand. We have counter kettles and small collection cans for business, too. Let me know if you would like one for your business. We ring the day after Thanksgiving to Christmas eve. Please know that 100% of these collected funds stay in Quartzsite for our outreach services. As an example, we most recently purchased our second pallet of water from Coyote Market. We have given this water and electrolyte packets away all summer during this unprecedentedly hot summer season. We also provided our local police and fire departments with much-needed cases of bottled water. Thanks for considering being a bell ringer for us. We have for many years provide the turkeys and hams to the Church of the Isaiah 58 Project for their homecooked meal for the community. For those in our community that are alone and unable to get out, we will be delivering for our third year a homecooked Thanksgiving meal cooked by Coyote Market. Let me know of such individuals that we can make their Thanksgiving a bit for thankful. Have them call me please. We also have two programs for children. First, those families needing a little extra help making the true meaning of Christmas happen, we have our Salvation Army Angel Tree program. This is an assistance application process that starts November 1st, with a phone call interview. See flyer. We hope to have names on the Angel Tree for our amazing Angel Tree shoppers the week before Thanksgiving or earlier. We know

many of you like to shop for the kiddos at the Friday sales.

The second seasonal activity is our humongous Santa Event. All children of Quartzsite and the surrounding areas are welcome. This will be our 12th Annual Santa Event happening Saturday, December 21st, 9:00AM to 1:00PM. We will be putting our bright red toy collection baskets out around the community in early November. If we miss you, we will have a collection basket here at the store, too. If you need a collection basket, let me know. If you have a larger toy, like a bike, game, etc., to donate, call and we can do a pick-up. We can always use extra elves on this big fun day as well as the day before with set up. We have many stations that the kiddos are guided through with the elf helpers. Of course, we will have take-home pictures with Santa. So much fun for all. Come in and see me. The more the merrier. Further details next month.

We continue to fundraise for Quartzsite Fire Captain Spencer Hess with his cancer fight. We have an awesome Liberty Electric Three Wheeled Trike that was donated by a fellow firefighter cancer patient. Blessing to them both. The bike proceeds are all dedicated to Captain Spenser. Come see this electric bike.

We are continuing to collect for our local La Paz County Animal Shelter, located in Parker, at 309 7th Street Parker AZ. We have made four deliveries. Our amazing community has now donated 175 items. Thanks, volunteer Sandee who has made these deliveries. Come fill our heart of love to all the fur babies. The excited recipients gave a “bark bark and a meow meow!”

In honor of Veterans Day, November 11th, we will provide small flags on November 7th.

We are thankful for several folks that are bringing in flattened bags for Cashier Holly. This is very much appreciated. We also have small at

home tasks. Have an extra hour or two, we always have tasks that can be competed on a drop-in basis, too. Ask if you can help us. THANKS! We now have a very large display of nice windchimes-thanks David. Need a new in the box Sauder large corner shelf, a new in the box to be put together, entertainment storage unit, four nice reception armed chairs, a large ottoman and many suitcases. Need bicycle wheels- great for a large spider web decoration- we have a shopping cart of them. Need a very nice small wood student desk with stool, bins are loaded with new yarn-thanks Gail for processing this large selection, lots and lots of books for kids, two wooden night stands, unusual wooden boat with shelves display stand, a large 5 day Polar Igloo, and a beautiful large solid wood pedestal round oak table with huge claw feet, and an extension -little refinishing and comes already taken apart. Great if you have a very large area for it. Need a digital photo iFrame? Come see what unique items we have. We have such amazing donors. Halloween and Thanksgiving décor is displayed and ready for you. Come see us at the Town of Quartzsite’s Trunk or Treat Event, Saturday, October 26th. Thanks Barb and Becky for packaging our treat bags. Please watch our postings on Facebook for weekly sales and announcements. I try and post on our Salvation Army Thrift Store Group, as well as Quartzsite

Chatter, What’s Up Quartzsite Arizona Group and Quartzsite Support Local Businesses Group. We recently have had half-price sales in different departments. Never know what will be on sale. Remember a red “X” on any price sticker is a half-priced item. If a price tag has been removed, we are not able to sell the item. We continue to have free shoes, socks, hats and miscellaneous items out front of the store and a free clothing rack and food available inside.

Nothing can dim the light which shines from within. Be present in all things and thankful for all things.

QUARTZSITE ROCKS!

“Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” ~ Melody Beattie

Welcome back to our wonderful snowbirds and seasonal businesses opening! It’s been a long hot summer here in Quartzsite and we are so grateful to experiencing lower temperatures welcome the return of our northern friends! Quartzsite sure is a quirky place and each year is truly different. Yes, I’ve been writing about the importance of Gratitude since my very first editorial back in October 2008. Yes, I realize our world is full of fear, anger, and frustration, however focusing on those emotions just breeds more of the same. Each one of us must be very mindful not to express those emotions through hateful actions or violence towards others. So if you’re having a hard time with your emotions recently, find something to be grateful for. Why? Because gratitude

LETTERS TO EDITOR POLICY

Desert Messenger encourages letters from its readers. Letters should be no longer than 300 words, and may be edited for grammar, content and length. Letters considered libelous, in poor taste, on a personal issue, mean spirited or dominated by Scripture quotes will not be published. Third party letters will not be accepted.

To avoid confusion over people with common or similar names, writers must provide a full name and indicate the name they are known by. Writers must provide a full street address and phone number. Rvers can provide the location of park/BLM land, etc. Street addresses will not be published. Phone numbers are for verification only and will not be printed.

is actually a shortcut to finding peace of mind. There’s always going to be something to be angry or sad about, but if we let it run our thoughts and lives, we lose out on all the joy of being alive! Count your blessings, enjoy family and new friends, and share your bounty with others. All major religions teach the Golden Rule, to be kind to one another. We have to be kind with ourselves to be kind to others. So, if you’re having a hard time finding gratitude, just start a list with maybe recognizing you have 10 toes, 10 fingers, 2 eyes, 2 feet, 2 hands, having a few coins in your pocket, and go from there. It is really pretty simple, but we humans can sometimes make things more complicated than necessary. So, we also know it’s election season and folks might be experiencing a wide range of emotions around the future. Rumors can get turned into conspiracy real fast. Help keep yourself, your family and your community safe by being aware of rumors and scams and sharing official information from trusted sources.

• Share information from trusted sources.

• Take a big deep breathe before responding. Deep from the belly.

• Gratitude is a wonderful space to be in before posting online. Try it! Arizona Agenda asks voters; Have you wondered why are (Democrats or Republicans) listed first on my ballot? Capitol scribe Howie Fischer explains that state law says who goes first on your local ballot based on the most recent gubernatorial vote in your COUNTY. The Democrats challenged that law in court a few years back, saying being second hurt their chances, but they lost and haven’t seemed interested in trying again since they’re now listed first in Maricopa County.” Learning something new is good. It helps calm the fears. A question I’m hearing often is, “Are you better off than four years ago?” So, I decided to look up the September 2nd and September 16th 2020 Desert Messenger editions to view the news from 4 years ago. Well, I can say, today, I am so very grateful for making through that crazy time. There’s much more to say about the actual news of that time, and don’t have the room here, so I’ll be writing an article for Substack newsletter at SRainGoldenBear.substack.com. Sometimes it’s good to be reminded how far we’ve come so we can find a place of gratitude in our hearts. So before getting into an argument about who’s right or who’s wrong, take a deep breathe from the belly. Repeat. It will help you and everyone you encounter during these challenging times be calmer.

Mitakuye Oyasin! Remember, we are all related! Thank you for your support over the past 16 years. I really do appreciate you.

LUTHERAN CHURCH UPDATE

Things are picking up at Covenant Lutheran Church as we move into fall. Snowbirds are returning and we are starting our giving projects. We actively support the Quartzsite Food Bank by donating a $250 gift card every month and also have a jar for Sunday donations. On top of that several of our members volunteer at Carol‘s closet. Our members also do projects for the benefit of the community. This year we are providing turkeys and canned hams to the Food Bank for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Anyone in the community can help out by donating a turkey or giving a monetary donation. Make your check out to the Food Bank and drop it off there, or contact Maggie Ross at 360–490–8175. There are more in need this year, so let’s brighten up their holidays. Our Pastor Kevin brings fresh donuts every Sunday. Come by for a doughnut and coffee at 9 AM and if you wish to stay for the service at 9:30am you are welcome.

VOTE ON NOVEMBER 5TH

Please Vote! If you are a registered voter in the Town of Quartzsite, it is very important that you get out and vote on November 5th. Voting is your Constitutional Duty and your Right, so get out and vote.

2) Prop 402. YES! The State imposed a spending limitation for Quartzsite because of the undercount of the 2020 Census. The town has money in the Bank that it normally would budget for projects for the community. But because of the census num-

bers, the State has limited how much of the money in the bank the Town can spend. Your property or sales taxes will NOT go up if Prop 402 passes. If Prop 402 is not passed, then no matter who is in office the spending cap will stay in place, and there’s a strong possibility there may need to be services and employees cut.

There are those who may twist things and say things that are not true. The fact is the Town has the money. We need to have the spending cap lifted so we can continue the projects that are already started for the improvement of our community. Quartzsite has a bright future. The question is, do we just have the porch light on or do we have the stadium lights on to show our beautiful community and welcome the wonderful people who come here live and thrive here and keep our community this unique community that it is. If there’s any questions of what’s happening you can always ask me and you know I will tell you how it is. Please get out and vote.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

At a recent campaign event I heard our current legislator John Gillette say that he refuses to “work across the aisle”. He might as well be telling you he’s just collecting a salary from you, the taxpayer, to go sit on his thumbs. We currently have divided representation. We have a Democratic Governor and a Republican controlled House and Senate. We have seen over the last two years that bills that pass solely along party lines be vetoed by the Governor. Moving forward in 2025, one of two things will happen. Either we will stay completely the same, or the House or Senate could potentially flip to Democratic control. Regardless of which way it goes, it’s important to be willing to work with all parties to pass legislation that helps the people of Arizona. Good ideas can come from anywhere,

and if as a legislator, you are unwilling to at least consider all solutions, you are doing a disservice to the people you are supposed to serve.

I have a proven track record of being able to work with people, even with different political ideologies. Studies have shown that Arizonans agree on about 70% of the issues, way more than we disagree on. Yet, the devisiveness with our current elected officials is stopping the work that could actual help people from being done. We need to protect our water. We need affordable housing. We need access to quality health care in rural Arizona. Most importantly, we need adults at the legislature that our willing to have conversations and find compromises that will benefit all of us.

I have spent the last decade building solid relationships, on both sides of the aisle. I’m willing to talk with anyone to figure out where we do agree, and help find compromises where we don’t. I want to go to the capital to work, to help my community, and all of the communities in Arizona, with an eye to how things effect rural Arizona.

I am asking for your vote in the upcoming election. I will work hard for you, and will be open to any good solution, no matter where it comes from. I would be honored to represent Quartzsite, La Paz County and all of Legislative District 30.

FALL IN THE DESERT!

DesertMessenger.com

Gardening with Dennis

Fall in the desert is not as dramatic or colorful as fall in north-country woods. It does have its own special appeal to look forward to. First, it is cooler, finally, and you can step outside your door and take a breath without scorching yourself. It is a time of dramatic sunsets and harvest moons. It is time to plant trees, shrubs, vines and groundcovers so next summer will be easier to take. By planting in the fall, it gives trees and shrubs time to get established before the heat of summer is upon them and they have a much better chance of surviving and thriving. It is a good time to prune trees, with-

out stressing them, and clearing away their debris from all the wind. Fall is its own growing season in the desert. It is hard to believe anything has the strength to turn green after being brown all summer, but the fact is the trees are turning green. The creosote that are brown now, have three to four inches of bright green growth at the end of a brown branch that looks dried out and a few minutes from dead. How these plants and trees can do that after a summer of record and relentless high temperatures and almost no rain is an amaz-

ing feat. These are small miracles of an adaptable landscape that thrives and survives.

Fall is time to pick up all the dead saguaros that have fallen this summer and dried out in the blistering heat so they are not as heavy to remove; unless you are letting the saguaro dry out so you can use its ribs to add to the landscape. In the desert, fall is almost a second spring. The trees, shrubs and cactus do not flower, but fall is a second chance to start fresh, to plant flowers and vegetables, and enjoy being outside and make adjustments you want to make. In short, it is a time to get out of survival mode of a record-setting- all-summer- long heat wave and move forward in ways that make us feel better. It’s also time for petunias and chrysanthemums and marigolds. Marigolds are particularly easy to grow from seed and have orange and dark red flowers in keeping with fall colors. It is a time to plant roses, garlic, and wildflowers. Dump the used potting soil in your compost container along with the dead plants from summer to have plenty of compost to spread for spring planting. It is all part of the flow of change and improvement and using what you have to make things better. During the summer I found myself stuck in a waiting room and as a result I glanced through several editions of Phoenix Magazine, which is always filled with homes that are designed to be part of the landscape. These homes usually are surrounded by an artistic design of desert landscaping. Overall, the homes are a work of art with brick and stone and plants and trees, like a canvas placed

in the desert. They are stunning but they lack the power of the desert landscape, where plants and trees survive the extremes of the desert climate. The plants around these artistic homes are well watered, maintained, and replaced it they fail to be spectacular.

to remove; unless you are the saguaro out so you can use its to to

Seeing these beautiful homes in a magazine spread was a reminder that going for walks or rides in the desert is its own stunning experience, especially in areas where the desert has not yielded to the town. You are more likely to see a Great Horned Owl, a fox, red-tailed hawks, jack rabbits and roadrunners in their native landscape where these birds and animals and reptiles have learned to grow and survive amidst the breathtaking desert landscape. Dennis loved to explore the desert and take pictures of everything he discovered. He was also adamant about respecting the landscape. For all the strength the desert landscape exhibits, it cannot survive tire tracks through a creosote, a landscape trail that is ignored, or a rock removed sheltering a plant struggling to grow. There are no frequent rains to encourage growth and restore the damage of careless exploration. He enjoyed the desert, explored on foot or stuck to the trails and came back with wonderful pictures of special places that he left untouched for others to enjoy. Fall in the desert is like a second spring we can enjoy as gardeners, hikers, ATVer’s and spectators that is unique to our desert life.

Note: for those who did not know Dennis, he was a part-time employee of the town parks department, a Master Gardener since 1985 and instructor for the Master Gardener Class. He passed away in 2018.

BLM LTVA fee increase?

On a hot day over 100 people attended a BLM meeting October 9th at La Posa South Pavillion. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) officials presented charts and explained why they want to increase the fees for Long Term Visitor Area (LTVA) campers. The proposed fee would increase from $180 to $600 for up to 7 months. The new Proposed short-term fees would increase from $40/2 weeks to $200/30 days. The BLM has not updated business plans for our recreation sites to reflect market conditions since 2008. The crowd was obviously not pleased with the proposed increases. BLM did accept comments in writing. “If they go to $600, they’re going to drop 80% of their population. That does not make sense,” said Hawk Fuzz who attended the meeting.

Business Plans currently seeking public input can be found at: https://www.blm.gov/arizona/ public-room/strategic-plan/ yuma-field-office-ltva-draftbusiness-plan.

You can provide comment on this draft business plan by emailing BLM_AZ_YFOWEB@blm.gov with the subject line “LTVA Fee Proposal Comment” or by delivering/mailing comments to: BLM Yuma Field Office 7341 E 30th St, Suite A Yuma, AZ 85365

COMMENTS MUST BE IN WRITING AND RECEIVED BY OCT. 21, 2024.

VFW Veterans Suicide Awareness Day

A very touching ceremony was held at the Heroes Bells in Celias Rainbow Gardens on September 22, National Veterans Suicide Awareness Day.

This date was chosen as a reminder because 22 American Veterans commit Suicide every day. The Quartzsite ceremony included 22 people in Suicide Awareness shirts, holding the names of 22 Veteran Suicide victims known to Quartzsite residents. The photo shows the victim names, 20 attendees and 2 emp-

ty chairs to symbolize our loss. We then rang the Heroes Bells 22 times and information was shared regarding hotlines, help options and 988 cards were handed out, so everyone has the Suicide hotline number in their wallet. 988, dial 1 is the direct Veteran Suicide hotline nationwide. The Patriot’s Pen Youth Essay Competition is for middle school students in grades 6-8 to have the opportunity to compete and win thousands of dollars in national awards.

The VFW enacted the Patriot’s Pen competition in 1995 to encourage young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society by composing a 300- to 400-word patriotic-themed essay. The theme for the 2023-24 competition is “My Voice in America’s Democracy” Students begin by competing at the local Post level. Post winners advance to District competition with District winners advancing to the state competition. The first place winners receive some money at each level. State first-place winners compete for their share of thousands of dollars in awards, and the national firstplace winner is awarded $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. Each year, more than 125,000 students participate nationwide. Deadline for student entries is October 31. FOR DETAILS VISIT: https://www.vfw.org/PatriotsPen.

The VFW became a national sponsor in the late 1950s and assumed sole responsibility for the program in 1961. Medicare doesn’t pay for dental care.1

As good as Medicare is, it was never meant to cover everything. If you want protection, you need to purchase individual insurance.

Early detection can prevent small problems from becoming expensive ones.

The best way to avoid large dental bills is preventive care. Experts recommend checkups twice a year.

Previous dental work can wear out.

Your odds of having a dental problem only go up as you age.2

Treatment is expensive — especially the services people over 50 often need.

Unexpected bills, like $190 for a filling, or $1,213 for a crown3 can be a real burden, especially if you’re on a fixed income.

to authorize the Town Council to adopt an alternative method for setting the Town’s expenditure limit. This is known as the Alternative Expenditure Limitation. A permanent Base adjustments apply to all future years, until new base is adopted by voters. This will allow the Town of Quartzsite to permanently adjust the state’s base expenditure amount based on current needs, rather than using the state-imposed limitation. If the ballot measure fails: The Town will be subject to the State-imposed limitation. The Town would not be able to present an additional alternative expenditure limitation to voters for two years. Council will need to make decisions on priorities for operations within that limitation. The Town will not be able to spend the revenue budgeted/received for approved operations. Impact townwide operations including public safety, streets and roads utilities, parks and recreation and administration operations.

Quartzsite’s 1979-80 Base Limit is $974,825. If the ballot measure passes: The Town will operate under the Permanent Base option for budgeting its expenditures. It allows the town to be able to spend the revenues received (budgeted) rather than limited by the State expenditure limit formula. This does NOT raise or impose taxes, AND it does NOT allow the Town to spend more than it receives in revenue. Quartzsite’s annual budget will continue to be subject to all state laws. Including the requirement that the Town must pass balanced budgets and spend no more than received. At the Town Manager’s meeting last week, Town Manager Jim Ferguson said, “Since I’ve been here the council has always had a balanced budget. We have to live within our budget. It’s required by law and that’s just the way it is.”

The Town mailed a Voter Information pamphlet to all registered Quartzsite voters prior to the General Election with all the information voters need. Be sure to watch for it in your mailbox in October. If you have questions regarding Prop 402, please call Town Hall at 928-9274333 or visit www.QuartzsiteAZ.org. Senior Scams

Part II: “Phishing” Emails and Texts

Welcome back to the Senior Scams! series. Today, we’re talking about Phishing Scams, which come in the form of fake emails and text messages designed to trick you into sharing personal information. The term “phishing” is a play on the word “fishing,” reflecting how scammers “fish” for personal information by luring victims with bait, much like a fisherman casting a line to catch fish. The spelling with “ph” instead of “f” originates from early hacker culture. These scams are shockingly common, and they are the perfect weapon for cybercriminals who want to steal your identity, access your bank accounts, or even take control of your computer.

What Are Phishing Scams?

Phishing scams are fake messages that look like they’re from legitimate companies. You might receive what appears to be an email from your bank or a text message from Medicare. They’re designed to get you to:

● Click a malicious link, which can in-

stall harmful software on your device.

● Enter sensitive information, such as your passwords, Social Security number, or bank details. These messages often create a sense of urgency, making you feel like you need to act fast or face severe consequences.

How Phishing Scams Work

Phishing messages may look innocent, but they are a well-orchestrated trap. Here’s how they work:

1. You get an email or text that claims there’s a problem with your account, or a suspicious charge has been detected.

2. The message looks official. It might have the company’s logo, professional language, and even a warning not to ignore it.

3. You click a link in the message that takes you to a fake website designed to steal your login details.

4. Once you submit your information, the scammers use it to access your real accounts or sell your details to other criminals.

Why Older Adults Are Targeted

Seniors are prime targets for phishing because scammers know many rely on email and text messages to communicate. Seniors may also feel unsure about digital security, mak-

ing them more likely to trust a seemingly “helpful” message from their bank or a government agency.

What Happens if You Fall for It?

Falling for a phishing scam can lead to devastating consequences:

● Identity Theft: Once they have your information, scammers can open credit cards in your name, drain your savings, or apply for loans without your knowledge.

● Financial Loss: Phishing scams often lead to direct financial theft. Scammers can empty your bank account in minutes, and recovering stolen money can be nearly impossible.

● Compromised Accounts: If you provide login credentials, scammers can take over your accounts—bank accounts, email, even your social media accounts—and use them for further scams or fraudulent purchases. How to Protect Yourself

Phishing emails and texts are sophisticated, but there are ways to protect yourself. Here are some tips to keep you safe:

1. Be Skeptical of Urgency: If you receive an email or text demanding immediate action, be suspicious. Legitimate companies will never pressure you into making hasty decisions.

2. Verify the Sender: Always doublecheck who is sending the message. Contact the company directly using a verified phone number or website. Never click on a link or call the number in the message itself.

3. Look for Clues: Phishing emails often have subtle spelling errors, strange email addresses, or odd formatting. These are red flags.

4. Avoid Clicking Links: Never click on a link in an unsolicited message.

Go directly to the company’s website by typing in the web page address, or URL, yourself.

5. Enable Two-Factor Authentication: For added security, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your accounts. This way, even if scammers get your password, they can’t log in without the second authentication step.

Real-Life Example of a Phishing Scam

Let’s say you get an email from what appears to be your bank. The email says there’s been unusual activity on your account, and it asks you to click a link to verify your account information. The email looks legitimate—it even has your bank’s logo at the top. But once you click the link and enter your login details, the scammers now have access to your real bank account. In minutes, they can transfer money, change passwords, and lock you out of your own account. This is the terrifying reality of phishing scams. What to Do if You’ve Been Scammed If you suspect you’ve fallen for a phishing scam, act immediately:

1. Change your passwords for your email, bank accounts, and any other accounts you think might be compromised.

2. Report the phishing attempt to the company being impersonated. Many organizations have fraud departments to handle phishing.

3. Contact your bank or credit card company if you believe your financial information was stolen. They can monitor your account for suspicious activity and help you recover your funds.4. Run a virus scan on your computer to make sure no harmful software was installed.

German students visit Quartzsite

A group of 16 graduate students from Germany visited Quartzsite on Friday, October 4th. The group is spending two weeks exploring Southern California and Arizona and dropped by Quartzsite Chamber. Leading the group is Dr. Marc Boeckler, a Professor of Economic Geography and Global Studies at the Goethe University Frankfurt, where he leads the Research Group, Technologies of Global Circulation. They had lots of great questions about how the influx of winter visitors impacts such a small rural community, the people, the place, and daily life. University of Arizona School of Geography Development and Environment has partnered with Dr. Boecler to offering eight PhD positions (4 years) in the multidisciplinary science and technology studies (STS) project Fixing Futures: Technologies of Anticipation in Contemporary Societies, starting May 1, 2025, funded by the German Research Council (DFG) and based at Goethe University Frankfurt.
