Christmas Light Parade set for Sat. Dec. 14th

Town Council appoints Gary Ensunsa to vacant seat

The Quartzsite Chamber of Commerce will host the 22nd Annual Christmas Light Parade 7pm Saturday, December 14th, 2024. The theme this year is “Shining Bright in Quartzsite.” Free entry! Pick up an application at Chamber of Commerce, 79 W. Main St., Quartzsite, or Town Hall. You can also download from Facebook or at QZCOC.ORG. Staging will begin at 5:30pm on E. Tyson St., just east of Fire Station. The Chamber is asking entrants to please bring a flashlight with you to the staging area. The parade will start E. Tyson, turn south on Plymouth, and turn west on Quail Trail St. and end the Community Center. There will be a Tree Lighting and lots of fun. Prizes will be awarded for Best of Parade Theme, Best Spirit of Christmas, Most Creativity and The Fruitcake Award (most humorous display.) Refreshments will be provided by the Town of Quartzsite; desserts, coffee, hot apple cider & hot cocoa.

BaLunatic! Ken Trombley, Balloon artist will be making ballons, donations appreciated. There will be Reindeer Games for the kids, Antler Toss and Snowball Fight. Win a prize! Also this year a 50/50 drawing, tickets are $1/each. For more details call the Chamber at 928-927-5200.

By Shanana Rain Golden-Bear On Tuesday, October 29, 2024 Quartzsite Common Council held a Special Meeting at 1pm to conduct interviews for a vacant seat. Town Manager Jim Ferguson stated, “For clarification, this is for the vacant seat that Mr. Sam Saxton left. Council Member Nancy Nichols was appointed to take this seat until her elected position entrance of December 10, 2024.”

Applicants included Randy Smith, Terri Newlon, Gary Ensunsa, James Potter, Steve Schue, Todd Jaskowski, and Enrique Romero. Interviews were held in Executive Session. Four hours later, Council returned to open session. Mayor Norm Simpson announced there would be secondary interviews, date to be determined.

Tuesday, November 6th, 2024 Quartzsite Common Council held another Special Meeting at 4pm for Secondary Interviews for the vacant seat. Town Manager Jim Ferguson stated,“We are back again today for secondary interviews of Gary Ensunsa, Steve Schue, and Todd Jaskowski.”

Interviews were held in Executive Session. After returning to Open session, Vice Mayor Lynda Goldberg made a motion to appoint Gary Ensunsa to the Town Council seat which will be vacant effective December 10, 2024. Winners of the July 30th Primary Election will also be sworn in during the December 10th Council Meeting 7pm: Mayor Norm Simpson, Council Members Starr BearCat, Karey Amon, and Nancy Nichols. www.QuartzsiteAZ.org.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Colorado River District, Yuma Field Office published the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed Jove Solar Project, in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act. The BLM’s Preferred Alternative remains the Wash Avoidance Alternative. A 30-day waiting period follows publication of the Final EIS, after which the Record of Decision will be published. The Record of Decision will document the BLM’s decision on whether or not to grant a right-of-way permit for the Project, and if so, the mitigation measures that would be followed to minimize potential environmental impacts.

The Project is a proposed 600 megawatt alternating current photovoltaic solar facility that would be located in southeastern La Paz County, Arizona.

The Project is proposed on 3,495 acres of BLM-managed public land and 38 acres of La Paz County land. Project information, including maps, may be accessed on the ePlanning website provided below.

Generous donation announced for a new Public Library

By Shanana Rain Golden-Bear During the November 12th Town of Quartzsite Common Council meeting, long-time resident Terry Sweetland announced he is in the process of purchasing Ted’s Truck Stop restaurant building for a new Public Library with new meeting rooms.

Sweetland had worked at the library for over 18 years and continues to be a generous supporter of Quartzsite

Sweetland thanked the Town Council and staff for their support of the project. Town Manager Jim Ferguson explained the delay of the announcement was due to Prop 402 on the November 5th General Election ballot. Now that Prop 402 has passed Ferguson said, “Thanks to the town’s people, we now can accept this gift.”

Sweetland received two standing ovations in gratitude of his support for our community. The property is still in escrow, but appears everything is moving forward.

Correction Notice On Page 23 of the October 16th edition, I forgot to give proper credit to my wife, Starr BearCat for her photo of the volunteers at the QIA. If you read my Substack on October 16th I acknowledged the error, however Journalism Ethics and Desert Messenger Policy is to correct on any platforms where the error was made.

I made the correction for the online edition as well, but heck, I feel bad, and I apologize for the error.

We do have very strong boundaries about our individual business/activities and she didn’t even know I was using her photo until she saw it when the papers arrived. I baked her some GF cornbread later that day and we enjoyed a good laugh. This is how journalism works.

SERVICE DOGS Did you know distracting a working service dog by petting, talking to or even making eye contact in the state of Arizona is a Class 6 felony? ARS 13-2910 states A Class 6 felony for intentionally or knowingly interfering with a service animal without the owner’s consent or legal privilege.

These types of distractions can have very serious consequences such as: 1) It can distract the animal from alerting their handler of a possible medical issue. 2) It can set back 100’s of hours of task training and 3) As already mentioned, in AZ distracting a service dog is a violation and subject to punishment if convicted. Fortunately, it hasn’t reached this point, but we do encounter this type of behavior frequently in our travels as full-time RVers and recently shopping in town.

What we’ve learned is that a lot of people don’t know what a service dog is.

Oftentimes they consider them in the same category as an emotional or therapy dog, but they aren’t. While not to diminish the importance of their roles, for this purpose, we’re focused on what sets a service animal apart as there are big differences. A service dog provides aid to their handler, not comfort or emotional support. Their tasks can range depending on the individual’s need, which may not be obvious as it is with someone who is blind or wheelchair bound. For example, someone with a non-visible disability may have a service dog that is scent trained for numerous medical conditions such as diabetes, epilepsy, or allergens.

To help further understand what the ADA defines as service animals, they are:

DesertMessenger.com • Dogs of any breed and any size.

• Miniature horses are the only other animal the ADA recognizes.

• Trained to do work or perform specific tasks directly related to a person’s disability.

• Not required to be certified or go through a formal training program.

• They can be trained by the disabled person or with the aid of a dog trainer meeting specific requirements.

• Not required to wear a vest or other ID that indicates they’re a service dog.

• They are not emotional support or therapy dogs, because providing emotional support or comfort is not a task related to a person’s disability.

• For your safety and that of the handler & their service dog, keep these tips in mind when you see someone in the store or walking outside with their dog.

• Don’t assume it’s okay to approach even if it’s small, cute and looks friendly.

• Even if it doesn’t have a vest on or some other identification, assume it’s working and ask the handler for permission to pet their dog.

• If you do mistakenly distract the dog, quickly apologize and walk away.

Gardening with Dennis THE CACTUS BELT

It would be hard to choose a territory in the world less suited for dropping in on. North of the border, from Texas to California, is the cactus belt of the United States, where nearly every plant, even the lily, comes armed with needles, knives, or swords. South of the border is the same, only more so.” – wrote Reg Manning in his book, “WHAT KINDA CACTUS IZZAT?” Humor aside, cactus originated in the Americas over twenty-five million years ago, according to my research and notes

The origin of the name cactus is Greek, Kaktos, meaning prickly plant. The Greeks did not have cactus, but they did have a prickly variety of artichoke and that is how the name, cactus, developed.

Cactus are not loners, as they are sometimes depicted. They rely on nurse plants to shade them as they grow and establish themselves. They rely on birds, bees, bats and moths for pollination. Cactus flowers, fruits, and water-filled tissues provide nourishment and relief from dehydration to animals. They are an

important part of an eco-system. Despite the fact that cactus thrive in a hot and arid climate, recent extreme heat in Arizona has devastated Arizona’s saguaros. All of us have witnessed it. Many saguaros have fallen and taken fence lines with them. More are down in desert wilderness areas.

The cactus has shallow root systems, because water evaporates quickly from the soil in the desert heat. Cactus roots tend to be shallow and extend quite a distance from the center of the plant. Therefore, when it rains, plants store gallons of water in their stems and pads that they can draw from during drought.

During photosynthesis, plants transpire and lose a lot of water in the process. During the day, water loss is especially high in deserts where the extremely hot sun beats down, so cactus have adapted to open their stomata at night, to minimize water loss. If the extreme heat is long term, cactus shut down the photosynthesis process and stay in a state of dormancy until climate conditions improve. Small wonder they have been around for millions of years. Cactus have an ability make major adaptations rather than become extinct.

There are more than eighteen hundred and fifty species of cactus as a result. Cactus, after all, can survive extreme desert temperatures, or in a pot on a windowsill where a neglectful plant parent forgets to water it for months at a time. It is versatile plant and continues to adapt. For all of its adaptive talents, the cactus eco-system is fragile in one key way and that is their growth pattern. Cactus are not petunias. If they die and new cactus is planted, is not an instant fix, like

November 20, 2024 going to Walmart for more petunias.

Cactus growth and development can take years because where they live and thrive is the desert, with built -in waiting between rains, dormant periods because of excessive heat and potential lack of pollinators.

Cactus are like the dinosaurs from millions of years ago, only they have survived.

To end where I started, I will quote Reg Manning from his book, “WHAT KINDA CACTUS IZZAT?”; “There is no need to drive on unmarked trails into isolated desert areas – there are lots of good roads through splendid cactus country. ..Don’t destroy ANY cactus – it may have taken a century to grow it. Don’t try to carry away cacti – reasons: thorny small ones may injure you; you’ll find larger ones too heavy to lift after you’ve pushed them over; some states have fines as high as $300.00 for each plant disturbed without permission from authorities.”

This book was originally published in 1941, so I am sure the fines have gone up since then. Quartzsite is in the cactus belt and exploring the desert from fall to spring is a wonderful experience. Dennis did it often because there is always something wonderful to see.

From 1941, when Reg Manning’s book was originally published until now visitors and residents have been drawn to explore the stunning desert landscape and its wildlife who rely on the cactus for their homes, their food and hydration. Several copies of “WHAT KINDA CACTUS IZZAT?” are available at the Quartzsite Library for check-out for those who are interested. It’s a fun book with lots of good information.

Note: for those who did not know Dennis, he was a part-time employee of the town parks department, a Master Gardener since 1985 and instructor for the Master Gardener Class.

He passed away in 2018.

VFW Post 769 updates

ANNUAL TOY DRIVE Brotherhood Rogue Riding Group and VFW Auxiliary are holding their annual Toy Drive for all of the children of Quartzsite and Ehrenberg this year from November 6th thru December 19th. Distribution will be on December 21st at the VFW Post 769 starting at 12 noon.

Donation boxes can be found at most RV parks and multiple businesses throughout the town of Quartzsite. If you do not have a donation box and would like to have one please contact Dalene Thomas at 208-659-3093. If the donation box is full please contact Dalene and she will be happy to empty the box as often as needed.

FAMILY FREEDOM FESTIVAL The Toy distribution and VFW Aux Family Freedom Festival will be on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 1 pm. The event will start on the back patio with a carnival, patriotic crafts, the choosing of parent gifts and a Santa visit and will finish in the restaurant where 10 youth at a time will choose their gifts. You are welcome to drop off toys, bikes, donations to the carnival or parent gifts at VFW Post 769 at 305 N Central in Quartzsite. Volunteers are always welcome.

THANKSGIVING DINNER VFW Community Thanksgiving Dinner will begin at noon on Thursday, Nov. 28 at VFW 769 at 305 N Central in Quartzsite. A traditional thanksgiving menu will be served at this reservation only donation dinner. Veterans and their spouses will enjoy a complimentary meal at their preferred time.

Fall Festival Saturday!

The Town of Quartzsite and community sponsors present the 4th Annual Fall Festival Saturday, November 23, 2024, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Quartzsite Town Park. The event was initiated to Welcome Winter Visitors by creating a family friendly, community wide event to entertain local residents and to generate tourism from California and Arizona while sharing the story of our famous resident, showcasing what Quartzsite has to offer. Each year, the event has grown in popularity to well over 4,000 attendees who come out to enjoy great live entertainment, food, and two days of family fun. There is no charge for admission or parking.

The live entertainment this season starts off with Johnny Young. Johnny is an award-winning Country music artist with dozens of albums recorded with several bands. This versatile guitarist/singer songwriter has been on stage since age 6, entertaining music fans all over with his fun stage persona, catchy originals and hot guitar licks. After years as a dedicated band member, Johnny stuck out on his own with a batch of songs and a plane ticket to Nashville. With a big love for classic and 90s era County Music, Johnny writes songs from the heart that resonate with listeners, while his high energy live show whips audiences into a Rockin Country frenzy.

The Cassandra Long Band will be up next. The Cassandra Long band electrifies the atmosphere at The Quartzsite Fall Festival with their infectious melodies and irresistible rhythms covering some new and old tunes. Their dynamic performance keeps the crowd moving and grooving as they effortlessly blend genres and captivate audiences with their undeniable talent, energy & range. Mark Winley brings his seasoned expertise on bass and vocals, honed through his tenure with the renowned band Player, to the stage alongside the incomparable Cassandra Long, whose excellent lead vocals mesmerize audiences. Michael Rusk wows with his captivating guitar skills and vocals, while Bob Bunger’s drumming is nothing short of spot-on, providing the perfect rhythmic foundation for this pow-

erhouse group together, they deliver an unforgettable musical experience that leaves listeners craving more.

The final act is One of These Nights, a Tribute to the Eagles and their solo work. In October of 2006, national award-winning cover band Maggie Speaks was playing an acoustic show for a corporate event in Phoenix, Arizona when the crowd began calling for Eagles tunes. As they launched into “Take it Easy,” “Life in the Fast Lane” and “Hotel California” the crowd went wild. After that, they had the idea to create a full Eagles tribute band. You will hear all your favorite hits with some surprises in between. One of These Nights does not simply play the music of the Eagles, they become the Eagles. Food Bank updates The Friends of the Quartzsite Food Bank (Carol’s Cupboard) has completed an incredible Turkey Drive this year!

Roberto Salas, Managing Director Our original goal was to raise enough funds to purchase 50 turkeys. Thanks to Maggie’s dedication, hard work, and the support and generosity of our community, we have far surpassed our goal! We now have funds to provide both Thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys for local families with children, as well as prepared Thanksgiving meals prepared by the VFW and delivered by our local church volunteers to our homebound community.

We are extremely grateful to be part of such a supportive community. A special thank you to Covenant Lutheran Church, whose fundraising through an Action Team Project raised enough to purchase half of the turkeys for this drive. The Salvation Army updates

You pick your own schedule of days and times. We provide everything needed, even chairs or stools for you, too. Great way to get a friend and spread the holiday season to all. Yes, you can play an instrument when out with the kettle stand. We have counter kettles and small collection cans for business, too. Let me know if you would like one for your business.

We ring the day after Thanksgiving to Christmas eve. Please know that 100% of these collected funds stay in Quartzsite.

An example of our outreach; we just purchased seven turkeys and four hams for the Church of the Isaiah 58 Project for their homecooked meal for the community.

For those in our community that are alone and unable to get out, we will be delivering for our third year a homecooked Thanksgiving meal cooked by Coyote Fresh Foods. Let me know of such individuals that we can make their Thanksgiving a bit for thankful.

We also have two programs for local children. First, those families needing a little extra help making the true meaning of Christmas happen, we have our Salvation Army Angel Tree® program. This is an assistance application that begins with a phone call interview. See flyer on PAGE 26.

We are starting to put Angel Tree tags out for our amazing Angel Tree shoppers. We know many of you like to shop for the kiddos early.

The second seasonal activity is our humongous Santa Event. All children of Quartzsite and the surrounding areas are welcome. This will be our 12th Annual Santa Event. Santa and

his elf helpers will be here Saturday, December 21, 2024. Hours 9:00am to 1:00pm See flyer on PAGE 15.

We have toy collection baskets around town decorated with red Salvation Army bags for those that wish to put unwrapped gifts in them. We also have a collection basket here at the store.

We can always use extra elves on this big fun day as well as the day before with set up. We have many stations that the kiddos are guided through with the elf helpers. Of course, we will have take-home picture with Santa, too. So much fun for all. Come in and see me if you can help us. The more the merrier! HO HO HO! We did sell the electric three wheeled Liberty Trike as a fundraiser for QFD Spencer Hess. Our total presented to him for his cancer treatment was $3,554.00. Thank you, our wonderful community and our awesome shoppers.

Yes, Merry Mary has started to decorate our porch area with Christmas items. Soon we will be unable to receive large furniture pieces as the porch area will become a Christmas wonderland.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is initiating a project to repair the pavement on State Route 95, between Tyson Street AND Main St. to milepost 116, north of Quartzsite. Construction is scheduled to begin winter 2024 with completion anticipated early winter 2025.

Work is scheduled to occur weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., though some night and/or weekend work may be required. Milling and paving work is tentatively scheduled to begin late February 2025. The hours for milling and paving will occur at night from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. which will also require lane restrictions. Poi Spinning for Seniors Classes Poi is a ball on a cord (or in Quartzsite, it’s rice in sock) that you spin in circles around your body.

Sound simple? It is! And it’s also super fun, affordable, and scientifically proven to help your brain and body feel amazing. It is believed that Poi originally came from the Maori of New Zealand. Today, poi continues to play an important role in Maoridom and across the globe as a form of performance, play, and fitness and now in Quartzsite, too!

Last year, Quartzsite resident Shanana Rain Golden-Bear became qualified as a Poi For Seniors Certified SpinPoi Instructor from Dr. Kate Riegle van West from New Zealand.

Dr. Kate completed her PhD in the health benefits of poi at the University of Auckland. Poi has the perfect mix of physical and cognitive elements to keep your brain and body engaged. It’s playful. It’s rhythmic.

It’s challenging (yet achievable!)

Oh, expect some giggles, too! And it’s backed by rigorous scientific evidence: a clinical trial found that after just one month of poi practice, participants improved their grip strength, balance, and attention.

BLM LTVA camping areas The La Posa Long Term Visitor Area (LTVA) was created in 1983 to fulfill the needs of winter visitors and to protect the local desert ecosystem from overuse. The campground is approximately 11,400 acres in size, flat landscape, sparsely vegetated with plants such as creosote bushes, palo verde trees, ironwood trees, mesquite trees and various species of cacti. La Posa LTVA offers solitude in a unique desert landscape and a variety of recreational opportunities such as hiking, wildlife viewing and rockhounding.

Permits and Fees Whether you’re planning a single visit or coming back multiple times a year, enjoy the convenience of purchasing a pass before you arrive to cover recreation-related fees at Bureau of Land Management sites.

The LTVA long term permit ($180) allows use of Bureau of Land Management designated LTVAs continu-

ously from September 15th to April 15th (a total of 7 months), or for any length of time between those two dates. The LTVA short-visit permit ($40) allows use of Bureau of Land Management designated LTVAs for any 14 consecutive day period from September 15th to April 15th, which begins on the day the permit receipt is exchanged for the official permit and decal. The short-visit permit may be renewed an unlimited number of times for the cost of the permit. LTVA permits are valid at all of the Bureau of Land Management LTVAs. From April 16th through September 14th, the fee is $10 per vehicle for day-use, $15 per vehicle for overnight use, or $75 annually per vehicle, for up to 5 people per vehicle. There will be a $1 fee charged for each person over the 5 person limit. The maximum stay is 14 days in a 28-day period.

BLM 14-day free camping Do not camp in Day Use Areas!

There are FIVE 14-day camping areas around Quartzsite. There are no designated campsites and you may camp anywhere within the boundary of the five camping areas. These sites are excellent places to stay for a few days if you are camping in a selfcontained vehicle. They are located within close proximity to the Town of Quartzsite, where you can enjoy huge outdoor swap meets and gem and mineral show every January and February. Recreation and leisuretime activities abound on the public lands surrounding Quartzsite, including hiking, off-highway vehicle riding, wildlife viewing, rock-hounding, and hunting. There are no facilities at the free sites. There are no fees for camping. The length of stay

is limited to 14 days in a 28 day period. In addition to existing rules and regulations, there are supplemental rules which are used to help manage this campground. A free 14-Day Camping Permit is available from the seasonal camp host.

Election Results

By Shanana Rain Golden-Bear Tuesday, November 5, 2024 La Paz County held the General Election.

The day ended at approximately 5:30 p.m., the La Paz County Recorder’s Office and Elections Department received a bomb threat via email.

According the LPC Elections Director Bob Bartelsmeyer, “The staff promptly notified the Parker Police Department, who responded and immediately evacuated the buildings and surrounding areas. The La Paz County Elections Department established an alternate location for receiving ballots from the polling locations and the transport of the ballots to the new site was coordinated with police escort. The integrity and security of the election process was maintained and the tabulation of ballots proceeded, with only a slight delay in publishing the unofficial results.”

Republican Hildy Angius was elected as AZ State Senator District 30 who ran against Democrat J’aime Morgaine.

Republicans Leo Biasciucci and John Gillette won the two seats for AZ State Representative District 30.

They ran against Democrat Monica Timberlake.

Republican David Plunkett was reelected as the LPC District 1 Supervisor, who ran unopposed.

Republican Duce Minor was reelected as LPC Supervisor District 2 which includes Quartzsite. He also ran unopposed.

Republican Holly Irwin was reelected as the LPC District 3 Supervisor who ran unopposed.

Vi-Sa-Wen Women’s Club updates DICK WICK HALL PIE SALES: It was amazing!! The sun was out, temperature was a moderate 70 degrees and the crowd was phenomenal for the 77th Dick Wick Hall Day event Saturday, October 19th. There were lots of fun and food following the parade through town. If you were unable to attend, there were some great photos on Facebook of the event. Our members really appreciate their loyal following who stopped by ViSaWen Women’s Club booth, at times several deep, to purchase our homemade pies. It may have taken 30 hours to assemble and make sixteen pies, but it took less than 15 minutes to sell out. Great Job, everyone. Many thanks to all the wonderful people who support this organization! Funds generated by this and other club projects will be used for our 2025 Community Grant program.

HOLIDAY BAZAAR: Wow, can you believe it? Thanksgiving will be here

before you know it. That brings to mind ViSaWen Women’s Club Annual Holiday Bazaar. This year the sale is scheduled for November 23rd.

There will be lots of cheerful, homemade crafts being offered. Don’t forget to purchase your ticket for an opportunity on a beautiful quilt! This is another lovely creation by Lucretia Brehm. We’ll look forward to seeing all our returning friends!

NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE UPDATE: GFWC-AZ ViSaWen Women’s Club is pleased to report that with everyone’s support, many pounds were collected for Yuma’s Food Bank, McMullen Valley location, to help end food insecurity in our community. To all of you who participated, THANK YOU, so much.

You and your contributions are so appreciated. Two hundred and three dollars in cash and 144 pounds of supplies were delivered to the food bank on Tuesday, October 1st.

The cash was quickly converted to 237 pounds of needed supplies by the manager, Tom Gresbach.

Another $50 cash donation for the project was quickly submitted.

OCTOBER SOCIAL: Thirteen people attended the October potluck social with an appropriate theme for Halloween. Everyone’s lunch contributions had to have a ghoulish title.

Bev Owens and Teresa Deshler were our hosts for the day. Teresa was also celebrating her birthday so she especially enjoys Halloween and all the decorating and candies. For entertainment following lunch, Teresa demonstrated wire mesh weave making wreaths. It is hoped to have a few on hand for the Bazaar in November.

Costume winners were: Best Costume - Sharon Ekstrom as a flapper; Funniest - Pat Pisarski as a hippie; and, Scariest - Judie New as a witch.

Eleven members stayed for a quick game of Left Right Center which was won by Pat Pisarski. The guest was Kattie Brookskenyon.

RADA: Don’t forget, Christmas is just around the corner and that good ol’ made in America cutlery, RADA, is a great gift. Visit the ViSaWen Clubhouse Monday mornings to look for a gift, or contact Bev Owens, 925-5501362, who will be glad to assist you.

If you grant them access to your computer, they can also steal bank and credit card information or even take direct control of your accounts. ● Identity Theft: By accessing your device, scammers can capture sensitive information, including passwords, Social Security numbers, and other personal data. ● Compromised Device: Scammers might install malware, ransomware, or spyware on your computer, giving them long-term access to your information and further compromising your security.

By Dakoda Stemen Part III: “Tech Support” Scams Welcome back to the Senior Scams! series. In this article, we’re discussing Tech Support Scams—schemes where fraudsters pretend to be tech support representatives from wellknown companies like Microsoft, Apple, or Google. They claim that your device has a virus or a problem that needs urgent attention, and their goal is to gain access to your computer, personal information, or even your bank accounts.

What Are Tech Support Scams?

Tech support scams involve fake alerts or calls designed to scare you into thinking something is wrong with your device. Scammers may: ● Call you pretending to be tech support from a major company. ● Display pop-up messages on your screen warning that your device is infected with a virus or has technical issues. ● Ask you to install “remote access” software so they can “fix” the issue— which actually gives them control over your device.

The scam often results in the victim paying for unnecessary or even harmful services, losing sensitive information, or unknowingly allowing malware to be installed on their device.

How Tech Support Scams Work These scams can start in a few different ways: 1. Phone Calls: You receive a call from someone claiming to be tech support. They might sound official, use technical jargon, and even provide an employee ID to seem legitimate. They’ll tell you there’s an issue with your computer, such as a virus or performance problem, and offer to “fix” it.

2. Pop-Ups and Fake Alerts: You might see a pop-up on your screen that looks like a system alert, warning of a virus or system failure. It instructs you to call a support number

or click a link, which connects you to a scammer.

3. Emails and Websites: Some scammers send emails or have fake websites that look like reputable tech support services. They prompt you to call or click for help with a “critical” issue.

Once you’re in contact, the scammer may ask for a fee for their “service” and request payment by credit card, bank transfer, or gift cards.

They might even ask for remote access to “fix” your computer, which gives them complete control over your device and any sensitive information stored on it.

Why Seniors Are Targeted Older adults are particularly vulnerable to tech support scams because scammers know that seniors may be less familiar with modern tech jargon and security practices. They may use technical terms or complex explanations, which can make it difficult for the victim to realize they’re being deceived. Many seniors rely on tech support, which makes a seemingly helpful “support call” easy to fall for.

What Happens if You Fall for It? Falling for a tech support scam can lead to serious consequences, including: ● Financial Loss: Scammers often charge hundreds of dollars for their “services.”

How to Protect Yourself Here are some steps you can take to guard against tech support scams: 1. Don’t Trust Unsolicited Calls: If someone calls you claiming to be tech support, hang up. Legitimate companies do not make unsolicited support calls.

2. Avoid Clicking on Pop-Up Alerts: If a pop-up or warning appears on your screen asking you to call tech support, don’t click it or call the number. Close the pop-up and scan your computer using your existing antivirus software.

3. Verify the Source: If you’re concerned there may be an issue with your device, contact the official tech support of your device’s manufacturer using their verified website or phone number.

4. Don’t Grant Remote Access: Never allow remote access to your computer unless you are absolutely sure you’re dealing with a legitimate support representative.

5. Use Trusted Security Software: Install and regularly update reputable antivirus and anti-malware software on your devices.

Real-Life Example of a Tech Support Scam Imagine receiving a call from “Microsoft” about a critical issue with your computer. The caller says your system is at risk, and they urgently need access to prevent a data breach.

November 20, 2024 They convince you to install remote access software, and once connected, they ask for your credit card details to “process the service fee.” Within minutes, they could have charged your account, locked your device, and gained access to sensitive information.

What to Do if You’ve Been Scammed If you think you’ve fallen for a tech support scam, act quickly: 1. Disconnect from the Internet: If you’ve given someone remote access, immediately disconnect your device from the internet to limit their control.

2. Uninstall Any Installed Software: Remove any software the scammer asked you to install.

3. Change Your Passwords: Update all of your passwords for accounts on your device, particularly your email and financial accounts.

4. Report the Scam: Inform your bank or credit card company, and report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

5. Run a Security Scan: Use your antivirus software to scan for and remove any potential threats or malware.
