Santa’s Workshop Arts & Crafts Festival Nov. 24-25

The Annual Santa’s Workshop Arts and Crafts Festival that is once again being held at Tyson Wells Showgrounds on November 24 and 25. The Quartzsite Business Chamber of Commerce started the festival, but following their retirement last spring, Nancy Nichols stepped in to organize this year’s event.

The craft festival is full of unique handmade crafts, original artwork, handmade gifts, and Christmas decorations. There will be demonstrations and hourly raffles for one-of-a-kind items.

Crafters come from all over the country and even from Canada when they come for the winters here in the Southwest, and it is always great to see them again every year. They spend their summers doing all their unique craft items and bring them to the Santa’s Workshop to bring more Christmas spirit to the holiday spirit!!

The festival is located in the metal building at Tyson Wells Showgrounds, 121 W. Kuehn and Hwy. 95.

5th Annual Soup & Chowder Fest Dec. 8 Please everyone mark your calendar for the 5th Annual Soup and Chowder Festival to be held on Saturday, December 8, 2018 12 pm - 3pm at the Quartzsite Improvement Assoc. (QIA.) It will again be held in conjunction with the Operation Hero Comfort Silent Auction.

P & Z Commission to discuss Animal Changes Tues. Dec. 4, 3pm Quartzsite Planning & Zoning Commission will hold a special meeting Tuesday, Dec. 4th beginning at 3pm at Town Hall. The commission will be discussing proposed changes to Amending Article V Uses Permitted m each Zoning District and Additional Requirements and Clarifications for Uses permitted in each Zoning District, Section 2 Quartzsite Zoning Article, Animal Code. A subcommittee has been working since spring to create an ordinance allowing farm animals inside town limits. Public input is encouraged.

Town Code presently states: “...farm animals must be maintained so as not to create or cause a nuisance and are limited to future farmers, 4-H, or similar livestock projects conducted by the occupants of the premises.

Three (3) animals may be kept on two acres plus two animals for each additional acre and all livestock and poultry kept shall be kept confined to the premises by erection and maintenance of a stock tight fence and necessary cattle guard and notwithstanding any other provision only one (1) hog may be kept on the premises.”

The proposed ordinance being presented to the commission wishes to strike the above paragraph and amend the Town Code allowing a wide variety of animals, using a point system borrowed from the Town of Camp Verde, Arizona. The proposed ordinance text reads: **** Paragraph 4 General Agriculture Includes: B. FARM ANIMALS MAY BE KEPT IN A MANNER THAT DOES NOT CREATE OR CAUSE A NUISANCE PURSUANT TO TOWN CODE SECTION 6-1-5. [which must be a typo, as Section 6-1-5 states: “Swine: It is unlawful to keep any live swine or pigs in the town.” Section 6-1-3 of Town Code states: “Noises: It is unlawful to harbor or keep any animals that disturb the peace by loud noises at any time of the day or night.]

LOTS OF ONE-HALF ACRE TO ONE ACRE MAY MAINTAIN FARM ANIMALS TOTALING UP TO 12 POINTS EXCEPT NO HORSES, MULES, DONKEYS OR PONIES SHALL BE ALLOWED ON LESS THAN ONE ACRE. LOTS GREATER THAN ONE ACRE MAY MAINTAIN ANY OF THE FARM ANIMALS LISTED BELOW AT THE RA TE OF 24 POINTS FOR FIRST ACRE AND 12 POINTS PER EACH ADDITIONAL ACRE. PYGMY GOATS 3 POINTS SHEEP, GOATS 4 POINTS LLAMAS 6 POINTS PIGS 6 POINTS (MAXIMUM OF 2 PER PROPERTY REGARDLESS OF ACREAGE) MINIATURE HORSES 6 POINTS PONIES 6 POINTS DONKEYS 6 POINTS HORSES 12 POINTS MULES 12 POINTS CATTLE 12 POINTS Section IV. Providing for Penalties. Any person found guilty of violating any provision of this Ordinance shall be guilty of a class one misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof shall be punishable by a fine not to exceed Two Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($2,500) or by imprisonment for a period not to exceed six (6) months, or both such fine and imprisonment. Each day that a violation continues shall be a separate offense punishable as herein described.Public comments are welcome at the meeting: 3pm Tuesday, Dec. 4th, at Town Hall, 465 N. Operation Hero Comfort Silent Auction Dec. 8th The Silent Auction will be held on Saturday Dec 8th from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm in the Main Hall at QIA. The Soup and Chowder will also be at QIA from noon to 3:00 pm. We will have many items at the auction donated by businesses, vendors and individual people. We always have a wonderful selection and this is a great way to get a Christmas gifts or something for yourself. All money raised will help cover the cost of postage, which is currently $17.50 per box, or to purchase items requested that are not donated.

Come over and bid on the items you want, go enjoy soup and chowder and return to see if you need to up your bid. If you can’t stay until 4:00 pm that is okay, if you are the winning bid we will call you. We will have a display of cards, letters, certificates and flags that we have received back from units. We will have Christmas cards to send to the troops for you to sign.

If you have items you would like to donate to the auction you can drop them off at the office of the apartments, Readers Oasis bookstore, or call Anita at 763 639-9330 and I will gladly pick them up. Southwest Indian Rock Art presentation Set in Stone but Not in Meaning: Southwestern Indian Rock Art “Set in Stone but Not in Meaning: Southwestern Indian Rock” presentation will be given by archaeologist Allen Dart at Quartzsite Public Library, 465 N. Plymouth Ave. Quartzsite, Dec. 6th 7pm This free presentation is presented

by Quartzsite Historical Society and the Friends of the Quartzsite Library, Co-sponsored by the Arizona Humanities Council.

Ancient Indian pictographs (rock paintings) and petroglyphs (symbols carved or pecked on rocks) are claimed by some to be forms of writing for which meanings are known.

However, are such claims supported by archaeology or by Native Americans themselves? Archaeologist Allen Dart illustrates southwestern petroglyphs and pictographs, and discusses how the same rock art symbols may be interpreted differently from popular, scientific, and modern Native American perspectives.

Registered Professional Archaeologist Allen Dart has worked in Arizona and New Mexico since 1975.

He is a state cultural resource specialist/archaeologist for the USDA

It’s that time of year again when families gather together and set aside time to be thankful. We don’t really have to wait until a holiday to be thankful. If being Grateful was a daily affair, our lives would be more peaceful and fullfilled. Imagine the feelings we have sitting around the table with our friends and family on Thanksgiving. That feeling of gratitude fills the air. Did you know that Gratitude is actually good for our bodies, our minds and our relationships? How can we practice Gratitude on a daily basis?

Over the past decade, hundreds of studies have documented the social, physical, and psychological benefits of gratitude. Robert A. Emmons, Ph.D., is the world’s leading scientific expert on Gratitude. He is a professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, and the founding editor-in-chief of The Journal of Positive Psychology.

According to Emmons, Gratitude involves appreciating the value of something. When we appreciate something or someone, we honor the gifts they bring into our life.

Gratitude allows us to participate more fully in life. Gratitude allows us to be present and to celebrate the moment. Gratitude actually blocks toxic emotions. Professionals are even using the practice of Gratitude for prevention of depression. Grateful people tend to be more stress-resilient. Gratitude also strengthens social ties and self worth.

Mother Theresa talked about how grateful she was to the people she was helping, the sick and dying in the slums of Calcutta, because they enabled her to grow and deepen her spirituality. That’s a very different way of thinking about Gratitude— Gratitude for what we can give as opposed to what we receive.

Many cultures start the day with prayers of Gratitude.

“When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself.” ~ Tecumseh

To cultivate Gratitude, Emmons suggests keeping a Gratitude Journal.

Just write down 5 things that you’re Grateful for; the things that went right today, etc. If you do this on a regular basis, folks tend to feel more alert and alive, feel better about their health, wake feeling refreshed, and feel more helpful and more connected to others. Research shows blood pressure can actually be lowered by regular journaling on Gratitude.

THANKS TO LA PAZ REGIONAL I am in the process of recuperating...from La Paz Hospital visit.

I was there for over a week. I found it unbelievable, due to the extended changes. We DO have a great hospital in our area. I had gone in after listening to years of put down, but everyone so professional, friendly, nice, helpful, etc. More like a family there. All the therapists, nurses, doctors, lab, etc. were simply great! All showed an interest, cared, and, (must admit) spoiled me a bit! But I did adjust to the spoiling pretty well! Don’t hesitate to go there!

It has changed so much and staff are truly more like family. I want to thank all who are over there, for all the encouragement, help and assistance I received! Lots of hard workers, are there! They were determined to send me home in

better shape than when I entered!

Now a nurse, physical therapist, an aid come to me. Thanks to all at our Hospital! One of the best in the valley!

YUMA, Ariz. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking public comments as it considers a mining plan of operation from Bonanza Explorations Inc., for the Copperstone Gold Mine Project. The proposed action would affect approximately 120 acres of public lands in La Paz County, Ariz.

Public involvement is a vital component to the BLM’s mission to strike a regulatory balance while developing sustainable energy and natural resource projects. Bonanza plans to operate the existing underground mine, expand the mill and tailings dam in order to recover gold over a period of 4 to 10 years.

The BLM is soliciting public comments on the proposal prior to analysis of the proposed action in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act to identify significant environmental issues. The BLM will accept public comments in writing until November 30, 2018. At the end of that comment period, the environmental analysis process will begin.

by Jackie Deal Will Roberts...He’s more. He’s much, much more. Sure, he’s an actor, entertainer, columnist, trick roper, gun spinner, comedian, and magician: but he’s much, much more. I was privileged to talk, no “converse” with Will Roberts after the great “Dr. Buck’s Wild West Show” at the Quartzsite Improvement Assoc. (QIA) and came away in a daze. He’s a real, authentic, caring human being. I asked him for one special thing he wanted to share and he said, “Behind every great man is a woman in front of him with his car keys and directions so he doesn’t get lost.”

But let’s start with Will the performer (anybody remember Will Rogers?). Will Robert’s ropes do things no ordinary rope could possibly do, and, yes, it’s the guy twirling the rope, jumping through it and over it that defies logic and gravity.

The Town Park was the best venue for showing off his amazing abilities. But even in the cramped stage area of the “Desert Sky Theater” (the Quartzsite Improvement’s old “big” room) he was amazing.

How about gun spinning? Will’s guns (yep, he used two of ‘em) twirled around his fingers like an extra digit. At times the guns were just a blur. Try twirling a pencil in your fingers and then imagine doing it with a three pound gun.

The final demonstration of “cowboy tricks” was with the bull whip. The crack of the whip woke up even the deaf in the audience. His assistant from the audience held a newspaper up in front of her and we all cringed with her as Will deftly halved it with the flicking whip. And then halved it again. And again. Until it was about the size of a playing card.

Will sat with me for almost an hour after the show (Sorry about your dinner, Will, I hope they warmed it for you!) and I’m convinced he does, as he laughingly

says, “possibly channel Will Rogers”. He does a “Will Rogers-type show” but wonders “if Will Rogers would make it now.”

Will wrote a column “the Daily Scream”, carried by 150 newspapers, as a “political and social humorist”. He says, “I’m not left wing or right wing, I’m chicken wing.” He wrote a book titled “A Crackpot’s Potshot On American Politics.” Only recently he discontinued his column when he tired of “getting threats” and lamented that people don’t seem to have a sense of humor anymore. At one time he did 120 shows every year for seven years all around the world.

His blue eyes sparkle when he laughs and deepen when he discusses “human values” that are dear to him.

He lamented the plight of returning Veterans: “They gave us apple pie and we give them empty plates.”

Will was born 1964 into a poor, dysfunctional family. He grew up “in Chicago’s South side with gangsters and bikers.” He says “We moved 15 times before I was 10 years old; military family? No, bad checks, funny but true.” He comments, “We had a plastic fork not a silver spoon”.

There has to be room in the world for a gentle, caring, gun slinging, rope twirling humorist who believes we need to take care of the basic human needs and move forward.

Dr. Buck’s Wild West Show

By Jackie Deal DR. BUCK’S WILD WEST SHOW- Which was more incredible? The large crowd at the Town Park performance or the line clear out into the parking lot for almost two hours to get into the “Desert Sky Theater” Saturday evening? Either place, the crowd was rewarded with an outstanding show. This was the first Buck Connors Day event and we hope not the last. Was it a success? Wow! Just ask the capacity crowds who laughed, whooped, and hollered.

Saturday evening started with a scrumptious bar-b-que dinner, and weren’t those beans the best?

From about 5 p.m. until it was time to set up the Wild West Show, “Barefoot and Boots” entertained the diners with their high-energy music.

Sandy Andreasen, President of the QIA (Quartzsite Improvement Association) estimates the crowd at 380. She says, “We were impressed with the organization of the Committee for The Buck Connors Show and were happy to be included.”

The show was preceded by an auction of gift certificates donated

by Mt. Quail Restaurant, Emerald Canyon Golf Course and Avi Casino in Laughlin. The history of Buck Connors read by Quartzsite Mayor Norm Simpson enlightened many of us who wondered what Buck Connors claim to fame was other than being buried in our cemetery. Buck Connors was a roper, bronc buster, Navy and Army veteran and an actor for almost 30 years. He homesteaded in Quartzsite (there’s our connection!) and raised his family here. He was a pilot and developed his own air field, “Connor airfield”.

In WWII the strip was used to train women pilots (the WASPS). In 1947 Buck Connors died in Yuma of a heart attack and is buried in the Pioneer section of Quartzsite cemetery.

Dr. Buck (Montgomery not Connors) was a stuntman in the movies and brags (?) that he had “14

or 15 concussions, 32 broken ribs, a rebuilt knee and 3 crushed vertebras” among other souvenirs of those days. He still could take a hearty stage fall and didn’t flinch when having a chair broken over his head. We hope it was a break-away chair and that the saloon brawl was all pretend!

One of his movies from 1980, shown on the “bingo screen”, was of Dr. Buck running on top of a moving train; while train robbers probably didn’t do this, Dr. Buck actually did. Lee Anderson, Historian for the group, and Dr. Buck held a “conversation” debunking several “cowboy myths”. Lee was also featured with his dancing horse “Concho” at the Park.

Dr. Buck ran the Ponderosa Ranch where Bonanza was filmed and when it finished some folks suggested he start a traveling show. The show has a cast of about 12 with 5 or 6 at each show. He wrote the script and constantly rewrites it (so if he comes again it should all be new!)

I asked Dr. Buck if there was one special thing he would like to say.

He said “I’m basically a story teller.

I want people to walk away with a memory. If you don’t have stories to tell you haven’t lived life.”

With the Christmas Season approaching the Quartzsite Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism is honored to continue the tradition of the Christmas Light Parade. The 15th Annual Christmas Light Parade will be Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 7:00pm. Celebrate the season: enter a float, vehicle, or ATV in the parade, A tree lighting ceremony and refreshments will be held at the Community Center, 295 E. Chandler following the parade, and the trophies will be given out at that time. There will also be Santa and Mrs. Claus to greet the children and take photos if requested.

Parade applications are available at the Quartzsite Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism 1240 W.

Main St. and Quartzsite Town Hall, 465 N. Plymouth Ave. The deadline for applications is December 10, 2018. Applications can be turned in at the Chamber office or Quartzsite Town Hall. There is no entry fee.

All entries are welcome as long as they are in the theme of Christmas and are lit so the judges can see them well. Entrants will be given a numbered plate to attach to the left side of their vehicle or entry so the judges can see them clearly. Farmers Market to now open Quartzsite Farmers Market is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday 9am1pm, located next to Kens Grocery at Main Street Vendors, 960 West Main St. Organizer Thom Crawford said he is still trying to contact vendors but the produce stand is pretty much a done deal.

Crawford is planning on multiple days, some vendors may or may not be available for all open days but produce and others will be. Vendor cost will be the same as last year, $10 per 10 foot space. Vendors fees go to the Quartzsite Food Bank. Cash or check donations will be accepted there as well. So come join us as a seller or buyer- just looking and visiting works as well.

The Salvation Army happenings WOW!!! We are a hopping busy place. Thanks so much for your patience at the register and at the donation corner out in front of our store. It really helps when dropping off donations that you pull up along the side corner where the donation carts are, thus not blocking the flow of drive through traffic.

Congratulations to Lois as the raffle winner for the lap quilt in our latest raffle supporting QPD Explorer Post #928 fundraising to attend tactical competition event It is Bell Ringing time. Bells, flutes, guitars will be at Coyote Market, Family Dollar, HCB Bank, Post Office, and Roadrunner Market.

Quartzsite Salvation Army also purchased hams, turkeys, sweet potatoes and dinner rolls, to supplement Isaiah 58 Project’s home cooked Thanksgiving turkey and ham dinner.

It is also Salvation Army Angel Tree ® time. Tags will be ready to be picked up Friday after Thanksgiving by our awesome shoppers that earn their Angel wings by going shopping for and making a Quartzsite’s child’s Christmas special. Names of children have been identified by local agencies and submitted to the QFD. Please let us know of any families with children 15 and under that might need assistance for a joyous Christmas.

We have coordinated with Quartzsite Fire Department who will pick up our wrapped gifts and make delivery of packages with Santa. We can always use extra elves to assist with wrapping gifts and organizing the “toy trailer” that will be here. The Freedom Riders toy drive will be bringing toys that will need to be sorted and wrapped. Our pictures with Santa event will be December 22. Details later.

Veterans....need a ride to Phoenix VA? Veterans in La Paz County who need a ride to their hospital appointments at the Phoenix VA hospital can take advantage of a free service from the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) chapter in Lake Havasu.

The DAV has been operating a shuttle service from Lake Havasu to Phoenix VA for many years. Stops are along SR 95 and include Parker Dam, Parker, Quartzsite and Vicksburg Road and I-10.

To take advantage of this service, you must have an appointment at the hospital prior to calling the DAV and it must be a morning appointment.

The van runs every Monday and Wednesday. Due to legal issues raised earlier this year, DAV can no longer take veterans to “off-site” appointments into the city of Phoenix. This is a statewide decision, not a local one.

Anyone wishing to make an appointment, or has further questions, please call the DAV office at 928-855-0356 between the hours of 9:30 AM and 1 PM on weekdays, or call anytime and leave a message on voicemail.

Cool Whip topping in my freezer for times just like these when a quick and simple topping is all that is required! Add a dash of pumpkin pie spice and voila! Dessert is ready and no one will suspect how incredibly easy it was!

FLUFFY PUMPKIN PIE DIP • 12 oz cream cheese • 2 cups powdered sugar • 1 cup canned Pumpkin • 1 teaspoon ground ginger • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice or cinnamon • 2 cups whipped topping 1. Beat cream cheese and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in pumpkin and spices.

2. Gently fold in whipped topping.

Refrigerate at least 30 minutes before serving.

3. Serve with sliced apples, graham crackers or your favorite fruit!

Music in the desert November 2018 Yes, there’s music in the desert.

The musicians are flocking into town and if you love heartfelt music, this is the place. The music jams are “busting out all over”. Quartzsite music is different: it may not all be on key or in time but it’s sincere, soul music and you gotta love it.

Thursdays, at the QIA, that’s the Quartzsite Improvement Association for you new folks, ( 2nd and 4th is Gospel, 1st and 3rd is Open Mic) 6:30 p.m. is up and rolling.

Last Thursday the stage musicians looked like half of “The Traveler” band –because it was: Ed Bonham, Cookie Shannon and Jan Korinek backed up all comers and also performed. Some rousing music tilted the roof of the Desert Sky Theater (the old “big room” at the QIA.) Third and Fourth Thursday is called “open mic”, basically a “jam” where anyone can play or sing. Country Western predominates but there’s some pop and a bit of gospel too.

Martha McKay is jam master with part of the Western Strings Band backing the singers.

JR’s jam on Friday nights is off to a rousing start. Last week there were 20 musicians performing and they were some of the best. When Jam Master, Deb McClellan and Judy Bagley sing together even the deaf can hear; they harmonize perfectly and they are full of pep and life. Incidentally they’re looking for engagements, so if your park or venue would like some terrific music call Deb at 970-739-0132. JRs also has Sunday evening services with Deb leading the music. Community Bible Church hosts a Tuesday night jam and the church

rings with country western as well as gospel music. All evening jams are at 6:30 p.m.

AND there’s also dancing to the music. Line dancing is taught and enjoyed Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m.at the QIA. Now something new, well, actually it’s older than the hills, Square Dancing!! One of the first socials at the QIA in the 1960s was square dancing. It kinda died out but now it’s coming back and you-all come too. Lessons start Monday and Wednesdays 1-3 p.m.

Nov. 26. There’s a $3 charge for lessons and $1.00 for the hall. Dances begin December 2, 1-3 p.m. $5 plus $1 for the hall. Casual attire is fine.

There are many dance bands; perhaps we can include them in future editions. Martha McKay gave me Bob Anderson’s Western Strings band schedule. They’ll be at Brenda RV December 19, January 28, February 6, and March 6.

AZ DPS Detectives bust marijuana growing operation in northern Arizona Following a four-week long investigation, Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) detectives have arrested seven people in connection with two illegal marijuana cultivation operations. The Mohave Criminal Targeting Unit (CTU) coordinated residential search warrants on two properties in Yavapai County and seized a large amount of marijuana and other evidence.

Evidence seized included: • 791 pounds of cultivated (raw marijuana) • 67 marijuana plants • 180 grams of THC wax • 107 grams of LSD (hallucinogenic drug) • 1 gram of hallucinogenic mushrooms • 16 pills (unknown type) • Four firearms • Over $4300.00 in US currency Seven people were arrested and face numerous charges that include: possession of marijuana for sale, production of marijuana for sale, possession of Narcotics, production of narcotic drugs, possession of dangerous drugs and fraudulent schemes.

“Making communities in northern and western Arizona safer starts with dismantling drug operations like this one. Taking these suspects off the streets and depriving them of their illegal livelihood will hopefully send a strong message to others,” said Colonel Frank Milstead, Director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

In Memoriam Myles S. Schneider Myles S. Schneider, a resident of Quartzsite, Arizona, passed away on November 17, 2018 in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. He was 67.

Myles was born on March 14, 1951 in Manitoba, Canada to Rita and Jack Schneider. He grew up with his brother, Jack and sister Maureen and was known to be a big jokester. Myles could make just about anyone laugh. Myles was a salesman during his working life and could “sell ice to an Eskimo” according to his family.

A 25 year resident of Arizona, Myles had a passion for riding motorcycles.

Myles is survived by his son, Jaime, daughters, Kelly and Molly; father, Jack J. Schneider of Quartzsite, Arizona; brother, Jack A. Schneider of Seneca Falls, New York; sister, Maureen Comeau of Edmonton, Alberta; nephew, Andrew Schneider of Quartzsite, Arizona; and many nieces and nephews.

There are no services planned at this time. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Colorado River Funeral Services.

TPT renewals due January 1 Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) License Renewals Due January 1 Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) is now sending renewal letters to businesses this week. Every business licensed with ADOR is required to renew their Arizona Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) license.

The due date to renew a TPT license is January 1, 2019. TPT licenses are valid for one calendar year, from January 1 through December 31. Licenses renewed within the calendar year must still be renewed at the start of the following calendar year.

ADOR strongly encourages taxpayers to enroll file and pay online via the AZTaxes.gov website for easier renewals and faster processing. State law requires taxpayers with multiple business locations to renew their TPT license electronically.

AZTaxes.gov can also be used to update business account information once the account is registered. Please allow up to four hours before using your account for the update to be completed and to be applied on the account. The account must have up-to-date information before the license is renewed.

All fees are payable to ADOR using the license number issued by the department. The renewal fee is due at the time of renewal and can be paid via AZTaxes.gov with e-check or ACH Debit if that option is already set up on the account.

Arizona does not charge a state “renewal” fee. For a new TPT license issued by ADOR, the cost is $12 plus applicable city fees of up to $50 per jurisdiction.
