Fireworks rescheduled for Friday, July 3th Quartzsite, AZ - Red, White & Kaboom!!!

Family Fun & Fireworks is being planned for Friday, July 3rd at the Town Park Pavilion.

Once again the community will be gathering to celebrate Independence Day. According to Town Manager Skylor Miller, the change was made because of staffing issues.

Activities will start at 5:00 pm and include a water slide for the kids, rock stacking contest, dunk tank, corn hole games, frozen T-

shirt contest, hot dogs, corn on the cob, free watermelon, raffle & more! Fireworks will start shortly after 9:00 pm.

All community groups are welcome to set up a tent or displays sharing their information and events. Quartzsite Transit, newly named The Camel Express, (by popular vote) will be providing transportation to the activities. Please call Town Hall at 928927-4333 prior to July 3rd to make reservations for transportation.

Teens committed to making a difference with Youth Council Tuesday, June 9th, Quartzsite Town Council voted to support the formation of a Youth Council. Local teenager Rhiyanna Timberlake approached the Council in May; then gathered six other teenagers who are interested in making a difference in Quartzsite. The teens met with Town Manager Skylor Miller weekly working out logistics before Council members unaimously voted to support the Youth Council.

Timberlake stated, “The first Town Council meeting in July we will be formally recognized as a Youth Council. We could not have done this without all the support we’ve received. We can start planning some events as soon as we want, so let’s hit the ground running!”

The QYC will hold their first fundraising event, a car wash, on Saturday, June 20th from 9am - 1pm in the parking lot of Mobil/Burger King.

“The Quartzsite youth council’s mission is to build a better community for the town, by providing a safe, structured, substance free environment. The council will interact with both the youth and the adult members of the community, give back to the town, provide opportunities for the youth to learn leadership skills and give a collective voice to the local youth.”

Jones civil rights cases dismissed

herself. Since then, two attorneys requested to be withdrawn from representing Jones in separate filings, so Tuesday, Jones represented herself Tuesday. In September, 2014 the judge dismissed all complaints except the First Amendment Freedom of Speech complaint.

In one of her earlier complaints, Jones claimed that Quartzsite Town Council and Police Department had harassed her with warrant-less searches in an attempt to discourage her political activities. A court tossed that 2010 case a year later, a similar lawsuit filed in 2012 fell apart for failure to prosecute. As recently as March 30th this year, U.S. District Judge Diane J. Hemetawa ruled in favor of the Town of Quartzsite, against Jones on similar issues.

The cases stem from when Jones was ejected and arrested (later dismissed) during a public comment period at a Town Council meeting on June 28th, 2011. The video of the arrest soon went viral.

According to the Court, Jones had called the Court’s chambers Friday,

For the second time in a week, Quartzsite resident Jennifer Jones had a lawsuit dismissed with prejudice by a federal judge.

Tuesday, May 26th Jennifer Jones, a local dog groomer, political activist, and unsuccessful candidate for the Arizona House of Representatives in 2014, lost her Civil Rights case (CV-12-01383) against the Town of Quartzsite in U.S. District Court Phoenix Division.

In his ruling, U.S. District Senior Judge James A. Teilborg wrote, “this Court is dismissing this case with prejudice for failure to prosecute pursuant to Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 41(b,) He continued stating, “judgment for Defendants on all counts. Plaintiff to take nothing, and the complaint and action are dismissed with prejudice.” (meaning Jones is barred from bringing an action on the same claim.)

Jones had filed 5 cases against the Town. Tuesday’s case was originally filed on June 27, 2012 by Jones

May 22nd, indicating that she intended to file a motion to continue the trial scheduled for Tuesday, May 26th, the next business day. The court notified Jones that the trial will begin Tuesday as scheduled and if a motion was filed, the Court would not rule on it before Tuesday.

The court also Ordered Jones to appear for the hearing. Judge Teilborg stated that Jones must be prepared

to proceed to trial in the event the Court denies the motion. “If plaintiff fails to appear or if the Court denies the motion to continue and Plaintiff is not prepared to proceed to trial at that time, her case will be dismissed for failure to prosecute pursuant to Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 41(b).”

VFW Post 769 celebrates 15 years

August 12 is the day when Post 769 was established in Quartzsite. The comrades and ladies that worked so hard to establish this Post would be very proud of the success that has happened over the years and especially of the move to the new Post home on Central Blvd. So, on August 15th, it is time to celebrate accomplishments with an all day happy hour (beer only) a Pot Luck

Quartzsite Stabbing suspect arrested in Sacramento Quartzsite, AZ - Roy Lee Barnhart, also known as “Waterboy Roy” was arrested in Sacramento, California in connection with the May 31st stabbing of one male and female victims in Quartzsite, Arizona.

In a press release issued June 5th, Chief Ernie Renfro of the Quartzsite Police Department (QPD ) stated “QPD proudly announced through good police work and the assistance of the Sacramento, Calif. Police Department SWAT team, Barnhart was arrested today, June 5th, 2015, for the extraditable Felony arrest warrant in the City of Sacramento, California.

Barnhart will receive an extradition hearing and eventually returned to La Paz County jail in Parker Arizona.

QPD Detectives Mike Lancaster and Hilario Tanakeyowma filed the below mentioned complaint/charges with the assistance of the La Paz County Attorney’s Office Deputy County Attorney Kellen Marlow and obtained a signed felony warrant from Judge Tammy Carnevale at Justice Court #4 for two felony counts of Aggravated Assault with a Weapon/Dangerous Instrument and two felony counts of Disorderly Conduct with a Weapon/ Dangerous Instrument. There may be additional charges to follow.

The stabbing took place on Sunday, May 31, 2015, when, around 8:00 AM, QPD was called to the scene of a fight where a male and female were stabbed by another older male suspect later identified as Roy Lee Barnhart AKA: Waterboy Roy at the Cactus Patch Mobile Park located in Quartzsite, Arizona.

The Quartzsite Fire Department was dispatched to the scene where the male stabbing victim was airlifted to the West Valley Hospital in Phoenix with a serious stabbing injury. The male victim has since been released from the West Valley Hospital and is recovering from his injuries.

Witnesses observed the fight between the two individuals, whereas the witnesses identified Roy Lee Barnhart AKA: “Waterboy Roy” as the person who stabbed the male and female victims and fled from the scene. Chief Renfro assigned Detective Hilario Tanakeyowma to conduct a follow-up interview with the victim at the West Valley Hospital in Phoenix and obtain his medical condition. QPD worked late into the night attempting to locate the stabbing suspect Barnhart.

Local resident Jack Hagen dies Quartzsite Police Chief Ernie Renfro released the following Press Release: “June 15, 2015 In the morning hours of Sunday, June 14, 2015, Quartzsite Police Department (QPD) was called to the scene of a reported deceased subject in the parking lot of the VFW at 305 North Central Avenue in Quartzsite. This information was provided to the QPD from the La Paz County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher via a 911 caller. Once QPD Officer Salomon and Sergeant Frausto were on scene, they found a deceased male lying on his back with a single gunshot wound to the neck area. QPD did recover a weapon at the scene. The Quartzsite Fire Department arrived on scene and he was pronounced dead upon their arrival.

The Quartzsite Police Department has spent hours processing the scene. Once finished, QPD turned over the deceased subject to the Medical Examiner’s Office and the Parker Funeral Home. QPD has made notification to the next of kin.

The QPD has sadly identified the deceased as Jack Wayne Hagen, who is well known in the town of Quartzsite.

As with all similar situations, the Quartzsite Police Department is vigorously investigating all angles and aspects of this case to verify and determine the situation surrounding the death of Mr. Jack W. Hagen.

At this time, the death of Mr. Jack W. Hagen is still under investigation. QPD Detectives will examine all the evidence and compare interviews along with forensic evidence and the Medical Examiner’s report.

Most photojournalists just take their photos and turn them over to the editor to choose which photo will be published.

That’s a great filter system built-in.

However, it can be difficult when you’re performing both jobs.

Recently I did some soul searching when a disturbing photo was posted online upsetting many in our community.

I’ve been asked what would I do? This is a difficult but important topic to discuss. Readers have come to expect lots of good news in this paper. That’s great when there’s good news happening, but recently tragedy seems to be occuring more frequently in our town.

It’s a struggle as I try to figure out what’s in the public good and also what’s the effect on people who are going to see this. In other words, what’s my intent and my message?

The good thing is that every publisher/editor also struggle with the choices they make: Is it harmful to those in the photo? Will it be harmful to those who view the photo? Does the photo serve a broader journalistic purpose; allowing readers to make their own opinion?

Some may disagree that even discussing making choices is censoring information, while others may agree with me for filtering disturbing visuals; and that’s okay. That doesn’t make anyone right or wrong; we just have a difference of opinion.

I can’t guarantee what I will or won’t post or publish in the future, but please know that if I believe a photo will upset the readers for no reason other than to shock people, I won’t do it. I believe the more we focus on the gratitude we have in our lives, we will be able deal with anything. Life is like riding in a canoe on the river. Do you head straight for that gigantic boulder and crash...or do you gently steer around the obstacles?

I thought I could sneak out and go to England without too many people knowing. The best plans often wander astray.

AND THEN! My grandson told me that he hoped I wouldn’t have trouble sleeping as London is a noisy town. I asked, “Worse than bombs, rockets and V-1’s exploding?”

VETERAN HOSPITAL UPDATES

Colleagues, Wanted to give everyone an update on our efforts to improve the health care for veterans in La Paz County.

First, I found some reliable statistics that help us to better understand the needs. In 2014, according to the Veterans Administration (www. va.gov/vetdata/expenditures), La Paz has 2,849 veterans with zip codebased expenditures of $14,572,000. $6,743,000 was spent on compensation and pensions, $215,000 on education and training, $96,000 on Insurance and Indemnities, and $7,519,000 on Medical Care. There are 762 “Unique Patients”. This does not account for veterans that are not enrolled by zip code which includes our winter visitors.

Second, our final planning meeting is on Friday, 19 June at 10:00 A.M. in the classroom at the La Paz Regional Hospital. We want to make sure that all of the loose ends are tied up so we can have a successful workshop.

Arrest in 3-year old homicide/arson case Quartzsite, AZ - Quartzsite Police arrested Daniel Thomas for 1st Degree Homicide and Arson of an Occupied Structure on the 3-year-old Linda Thomas Case. Here is the full Press Release issued May 19, 2015.

On Tuesday, May 19, 2015, at approximately 6:35 AM, Quartzsite Police Department (QPD) arrested Thomas Daniel for 1st Degree Homicide and Arson of an Occupied Structure on the identified victim Linda Garrett. The date of the offenses occurred on August 23, 2012. Thomas Daniel was charged and booked into the La Paz County Jail for the above mentioned charges.

On August 23, 2012, in the evening hours, victim Linda Garrett’s deceased body was found with multiple stable wounds and partially burned inside her mobile home located at 855 E. Rogers Road, space #21 in Quartzsite, Arizona. The late Linda Garrett was a long time resident of Quartzsite and liked by many. QPD case officers Mike Lancaster and Hilario Tanakeyowma received DNA from the Arizona Department of Public Safety Crime Lab matching Thomas Daniel taken from the deceased body of Linda Garrett.

On this date, QPD served search warrants for vehicles and the residence located at 410 S. Riggles road, space #WH2 in Quartzsite, Arizona. QPD is currently investigating and attempting to identify additional suspect(s) in this case. At this time, QPD will submit all evidence for forensic examination in support of the all charges.

QES Board openings announced The La Paz County School Superintendent, Jacque Price announced last week there are two board seats available for appointment.

Price stated, this “is an opportunity for residents of Quartzsite Elementary School District #4 to apply to serve as a member of the Governing Board.”

The board positions are both for twoyear terms that run through December 31, 2016. If the appointees for these two positions want to stand for reelection at the next regularly scheduled election, the positions will appear on the General Election Ballot in November, 2016. One will be as a regular four year term and the other will be for a two year term.

The District is governed by a five-person board. Quartzsite Board members attend one regularly scheduled Board meeting per month (Monday evenings) during the year and other meetings or events, as needed.

Bridge improvement ID’d by ADOT Special to the Messenger Phoenix, AZ - The Arizona Department of Transportation has identified the need for a new project to prevent erosion underneath the Interstate 10 eastbound and westbound Tyson Wash bridges in Quartzsite near milepost 19, just west of the State Route 95 junction in La Paz County.

If the project is delayed, it could require a much more extensive rehabilitation project in the future, not to mention the potential closure of this bridge for a longer period of time, which would have a significant impact to the traveling public. Currently, more than 10,000 vehicles per day cross each of these two bridges daily.

The Tyson Wash is one of the two largest washes that run through the town of Quartzsite. Without improvements to the 410-foot-long Tyson Wash Bridges, these bridges could be vulnerable to scouring/erosion because major floods events occur in this area.

The project will include replacing the existing bridge deck joints along the north- and southbound Tyson Wash Bridges. The project will also include removal of sediment, such as sand and rocks from bridge abutments or piers.

If funding is secured, the project would temporarily cut off access underneath the bridge for up to six months of construction and require one-lane restrictions along I-10.

ADOT understands that this area underneath I-10 is frequented by ATVs and other means of transportation by locals and other winter visitors. Knowing how important this is to the local community, ADOT will mitigate the impact of construction as much as possible, including trying to schedule work outside of the winter months.

However, ensuring the safety of the motorists who travel daily on the bridge is ADOT’s top priority.

The scouring work would protect the foundation and the bridge structure from erosion, which can occur when swift-moving water undermines the integrity of the bridge structure.

Currently, the project is currently not listed in Tentative 2016-2020 ADOT Five-Year Facilities Construction Program. However, ADOT is pursuing funding to add it for construction in Fiscal Year 2017 (July 2015-June 2016) with federal and state highway funds.

The estimated $1.2 million project is expected to take up to six months to complete.

Okay, officially it comes next week, but in Quartzsite? Summer’s here – Summer’s here! And, in 2 weeks…woop, woop, it’s July 4th!

In 1922 Paul Harris (the Founder of Rotary International in 1905) said, “In the final analysis, Rotary exists for the purpose of developing the individual member and thereby increasing his capacity to serve.”

The Rotary has Five Avenues of Service with Community Service as one of them. So, amongst other items we do for our community, Quartzsite Rotary started a tradition last summer and we will continue it every year for the Town’s event for Independence Day celebrations. We want everyone, seniors, families, young and old, to come out and enjoy the festivities.

Our part in this is to keep the costs way down for the food so all can afford. Last year we started the tradition and we heard our townspeople who attended were very happy with the food and the pricing. So this year we decided we are going to cut all costs in HALF, OR MORE! This is not a fundraiser; it is our Community service to you all under our cost!

Monsoon Awareness week information Moonsoon tips Governor Doug Ducey has proclaimed June 14 to 19 Monsoon Awareness Week in Arizona in anticipation of the 2015 monsoon and summer severe weather hazards.

Historically, Arizona’s monsoon starts in late June and ends in mid-September. Monsoonal days are characterized by extreme heat and intense moisture, creating high humidity; the perfect recipe for thunderstorms that produce the kind of heavy rain, high winds and lightning that can cause flash flooding and dust storms and spark wildfires.

The extreme heat of summer can also be dangerous, even deadly.

Dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can hit anyone who is exposed to high temperatures for too long. People over 65 years old, children under five, individuals with pre-existing medical conditions and those who work outdoors are at high risk for heat-related illnesses. Limit exposure during peak hours and know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses.

“While the monsoon brings cooling rains, we need to be aware of its dangers,” said Wendy SmithReeve, Arizona Department of Emergency Management (DEMA) Deputy Director. “Severe mon-

Arizonans are encouraged to take the following actions in preparation for the monsoon season: Plan: Write a communication plan. The plan should identify a family meeting place, evacuation routes away from the house, and an out-of-town contact. Practice the plan with your family.

Prepare: Assemble an emergency supplies kit with enough non-perishable food and potable water to last your family, including pets, for 72 hours. Include a first aid kit, radio, flashlight, batteries, cash, cell phone charger, and copies of important documents.

Live auction for Gunny’s Angels success On June 6th Gunny’s Military Museum held a fun live auction. All proceeds go to the new non-profit organization Gunny’s Angels to help local veterans in need. The turnout was great for a first event. Attendees were really entertained as Bob “Gunny” St. Germain auctioned off the many unique items donated by local residents. Mark Church assisted. Quartzsite -Thursday, June 11, youngsters at Town of Quartzsite Summer Program learned about writing short stories. Kids were encouraged to write a short story titled “I am Grateful for...” To start the process, youngsters chose a word for each letter of their name. The kids teamed up to write and illustrate short stories.

ADVENTURES WITH ROCKS™ Rocks, sea creatures & a big ditch Looking down into the big ditch we fondly call the Grand Canyon, the first thought to come to mind probably would not be of the ocean. You may think about the Colorado River winding its way between the walls of the big ditch, and maybe about waterfalls tumbling over the edge into turquoise pools below. You may even think about the rushing water of the wild ancient Colorado River carving through the canyon walls and carrying sediments down into the quiet waters of the Gulf of California. But standing there, in the high desert, gazing down into that gaping jagged hole in the planet, more than likely you wouldn’t think about corals, sponges, and other such creatures.

The oldest fossils found in Grand Canyon Rock layers are Stromatolites, slimy bacteria-like organisms with a hard shell that are 1.2 Billion to 740 million years old. Stromatolites are found in the geologic section known as the Grand Canyon Supergroup, and dominated the ancient seas until predators like Trilobites came along to eat them.

Trilobites arrived about 500 million years ago, and are found in the Tonto Group of rock layers, which includes the Tapeats Sandstone, Bright Angel Shale, and Muav Limestone. Trilobites are arthropods, with amazingly complex eyes and segmented bodies made up of hinged plates and shields.

350 to 325 million years ago, Redwall Limestone was laid down during the early and middle Mississippian, when the land was covered by a retreating shallow tropical sea and the Grand Canyon region was being slowly uplifted. Crinoids, Nautiloids, Brachiopods, Bryozoans, Corals, and Sponges are abundant in these layers. In the late Mississippian and earliest part of the Pennsylvanian, fossil logs and

Our State’s namesake, and indeed our most famous chunk of geology, is beautiful to behold and contains an amazing diversity of rocks, plants, and animals. It also holds many secrets hidden in its colorful layers. The layers of sedimentary rocks exposed throughout the canyon are rich in marine fossils from one billion years worth of life on earth. Fossils from Pre-Cambrian time all the way through the Paleozoic Era, representing 32% of Earth’s geologic history, are found in the rocks of the Grand Canyon.

The sedimentary rock strata of the Canyon were deposited layer upon layer, trapping and preserving animals, plants, footprints, burrows, and other traces of ancient life in what is now northern Arizona. Among the fossils found in the rocks of the Grand Canyon are such marine fossils as crinoids, sponges, corals, brachiopods, and algae mats. There are also terrestrial fossils like leaves, dragonflies, reptiles, scorpions, and centipedes. Some layers also contain trace fossils. Trace fossils are fossilized indicators of ancient life, like footprints, impressions, burrows, and nests.

Fossils of plant material, amphibian footprints, and reptiles, as well as marine fossils, are found in the Supai Group of Grand Canyon rocks. The Supai Group layers contain sediments indicating a warm shallow sea and a muddy river delta, from the early Permian Period, about 300 to 280 million years ago.

The Hermit Formation, including Coconino Sandstone and Kaibab Limestone layers, dates from 280 million years ago to middle and late Permian, about 250 million years ago. The Hermit Formation contains fossils of large winged insects, cone-bearing plants, and ferns, while the younger Coconino and Kaibab layers also contain fossilized tracks of lizards, scorpions, millipedes, and early vertebrate animals. Contained within Kaibab limestone also are corals, mollusks, sea lilies, worms, and shark teeth.

It is the Coconino and Kaibab layers that Grand Canyon Visitors are standing on when viewing the Canyon from the rim. So the next time you visit the Big Ditch, while standing on the rim admiring the colorful layers and beautiful desert plants, let your mind wander to a time of deep ancient oceans, warm shallow seas, and fabulous prehistoric sea creatures. Look down at the grayish Kaibab limestone or reddish Coconino sandstone and

Leona Maryann (Budzinski) Gorczynski April 18, 1919 May 9, 2015

It is with great sadness but only happy memories that we acknowledge the passing of Leona Gorczynski, age 96.

Leona began her life in New York City, met her husband Theodore “Teddy” Gorczynski and they married in November, 1940. Together they worked to support their family at their Bronx grocery store and then at Wonder Bread, where Leona became the nationally-recognized hostess for Wonder Bread and Hostess Cakes. She enjoyed visits to Radio City Music Hall, museums, and all else that NYC had to offer. She loved to take visitors to China Town, Fulton Fish Market, the Empire State Building, and the Statute of Liberty, along with so many other NYC landmarks.

She and Teddy were married for 59 years. They loved to travel the US and spend time with family and friends.

Decades-long annual summer visits to Cape Cod with the Houghton family were particularly good times. With relocation to Rochester they welcomed grandchildren and countless more friends. Finally settling in Castleton with her daughter Diana and son-inlaw Bill, Leona spent the last decade wintering in Quartzsite, AZ where she taught crocheting and enjoyed the company of many more new friends.

Leona enjoyed bird-watching, and she fed a variety of songbirds, hummingbirds, and anything else that came by. She loved Polish music, was an avid and excellent bowler, winning many trophies and appearing on TV. She enjoyed watching Judge Judy and the news, and read the daily newspaper. She was a prolific crocheter and was very proud of winning several blue and red ribbons for her afghans, being most proud of winning the Grand Master Champion ribbon in recent years.

She was well-known for and won first prize with her “Leona’s Polish Cheese-

cake.” She was a letter-writer, and her handwriting was perfect script; she hoped that children, grand- and greatgrandchildren would continue to practice quality handwriting and the art of letter-writing. Leona was a member of the Schodack Crafter’s Home Bureau and donated many afghans to the South Schodack Fire Department for raffle.

Her smile always made you feel that everything was right in the world. Those who knew her wanted to be near her as her laughter, kindness, and love healed anything that might be wrong. She was quickly and much beloved by all who met her.

Leona passed away April 9th at home in Castleton, NY. She is survived by her two daughters, Diana (husband Bill Houghton) and Jane (husband Dave Swank); her loving granddaughters, Barbara (husband Don Runkle) and Debbie (husband Andy Melendez); and three great-grandchildren, Jeremy and Tyler Runkle, and Natasha Melendez.

Other loving family include her stepgrandchildren, Kim (husband John Berry, children Maya and Sierra), Kelly Houghton, and Billy Houghton; Valerie Loveless, John Bogdal, Kurt Bogdal, and Michael Bogdal and their families; David Swank Jr., (wife Anissa, children Katie and Kelly). The Asikis family (Mike and Alexandria, daughters, Daphne, Patty, and Maria and their families) were very dear friends, “like family”. Countless others mourn the loss of this beautiful soul.

Leaving Quartzsite (NOT) Quartzsite, AZ 6/5/15

OK, so I am supposed to leave Quartzite tomorrow, BUT this morning as I was putting Borax around my house (in hopes of discouraging the impossible-to-discourage ants), it was just SO lovely outside. About 6:00 a.m., it was actually cool, and there was a slight breeze. I realized I didn’t want to leave yet, and I didn’t have to. Besides, I had all that food in my freezer; too much to transfer to my RV. If I waited another week, I could eat 21 more meals, and I wouldn’t have to finish all those “leaving chores” today. I could spread them out over the next week. SETTLED! So, I relaxed on my front porch with a cup of coffee and the wildlife to entertain me. Some doves were waiting for breakfast, and within minutes, there were quail, house wrens, pigeons, and rabbits gobbling up the pieces of bread I tossed into my front yard. Talk about CONTENTMENT. I was MUCH more than happy. (I think “contentment” basically hangs around, while “happy” comes and goes.)

The wildlife in Q is fascinating! As I sit on my porch in the morning with my coffee and in the late afternoon with my tea, I feel almost like a scientist doing research, kind of like Jane Goodall and the apes. I have become an avid observer of all kinds of birds and rabbits, and to a lesser degree lizards, coyotes, snakes, and some little animal that looks kind of like a meercat (as seen on the PBS series) and may be a ground squirrel. I haven’t seen those for a couple of years now, and I miss them. They are comical little creatures. (I wrote a story about them once “Entertainer of the Week.”)

I see lizards of all kinds and colors, measuring from mere inches to almost a foot. They too are fleeting, never hanging around long enough to really get to know. They glide away so fast and smoothly; they seem to be on roller blades.

Snakes I don’t see too often (thank goodness!). However, just last month, I opened my front door to a snake right before my eyes. I slammed the

Traveling with Gypsy Jane door shut and tried to still my rapidly beating heart. Of course, to me, all snakes are either poisonous or rattlers.

By the time I called the park manager, and she called the fire department, and the officer appeared, of course the snake was gone. But I learned something. When the officer asked if it was a rattle snake, I said I didn’t know, but I didn’t think so because when I calmed down, I looked at the snake’s tail, and there were no rattles. The officer said it was probably a king snake, valuable because it eats rats. He said rattle snakes are usually coiled and rattle when approached.

I try to be on the alert for snakes, even more so when I heard about my neighbor and a librarian being bitten by a rattler and flown to Phoenix for treatment. They lived, but the librarian said her whole arm turned black.

I have had two close encounters with rattlers. One time I was picking sage, and as I reached toward the plant, I saw the snake coiled beneath it, within inches of my hand. They are so perfectly camouflaged. Another time, I was unlocking the back door of my RV, and I heard a strange sound. A rattler was coiled up about four feet away.

YIKES! I left the keys in the lock and darted for my porch, heart pounding.

Now, when I walk, I always have a walking stick and a flashlight at night.

And now to the coyote, my personal totem. I love its sense of wildness, freedom, and loneness. There is a coyote that visits my front yard after dusk almost every evening. I watch for it and sit very still inside my home, because it leaves if it sees the slightest movement.

There is a warning of its approach; the yard quickly clears of all wild life seconds before it appears. The coyote is a shy creature. It stops to observe the yard before entering....very tentatively. It walks in just a few feet, looks for something to eat, and then quickly retreats to the road to eat what it finds.

It repeats this several times, venturing farther into the yard each time and eventually eating what it finds where he finds it. He methodically covers the

whole front yard; there is nothing left in the morning. Watching the coyote is a delicious part of my evening.... truly a gift from nature.

The darling bunnies are always around and add so much to my enjoyment. Bunnies usually come alone. They dominate all the other animals as far as food is concerned.

When they approach a piece of bread, the birds back off. I love to watch a bunny eat. If it has something like a green bean, it will take one end in its mouth and slowly eat the whole thing until it gradually disappears. Sometimes another bunny will come along my driveway, and if there is another bunny there, they will face off in what I consider a friendly, playful way.

And this is the very best part: They kinda stare each other down. Then all of a sudden, one bunny will jump straight up a couple of feet into the air, time and time again. After doing this for a while, one bunny races off at lightning speed, with the other bunny chasing it. It is just so funny!

And now for my bird friends, saved for last because there are so many, and I have so much to say. But alas,

I’ve decided this story is much too long already; so I’m going to save the topic of birds for my next story: “Birdology in Quartzsite.” Stay tuned...... *~*~*~* To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to listen to stars and birds, babes and sages with open heart; to study hard; to think quietly, act frankly, talk gently, await occasions, hurry never; in a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden, and unconscious grow up through the common.
