A butterfly garden can be a fun and beautiful addition to your yard. Simply grow plants that caterpillars like to eat, and plants that adult butterflies feed on! (See below). Plants with varying bloom cycles can be placed together to keep your garden full of activity throughout the season.

Butterfly gardens can be any size - a window box, part of your landscaped yard, or even a wild untended area on your property. When planning your butterfly garden, the following pointers will help.

Adult butterflies will visit for longer periods if they find plants to lay their eggs on. Patches of plants that flower at the same time are more attractive to butterflies than a single plant with a few flowers.

If you let your lawn include some dandelions and clovers, you’ll see even more butterflies. Plant flowers in sunny places and provide rocks or stone walls where they can “bask” in the morning sun to warm up. Providing sheltered areas, such as dense shrubbery, offers protection from wind and rain and provides caterpillars a nice place to pupate.

Maintaining a damp, slightly salty area in the yard may also help attract groups of butterflies. Butterfly houses have slots the ideal size for keeping birds out while giving butterflies protection from the wind and weather, and are beautiful garden decorations.

Method for Chermoula Sauce In saucepot, toast spices. In separate saucepot, sweat shallots, garlic and olive oil. Add butter, spices, parsley and cilantro. Deglaze with 1 cup white wine. Reduce by half. Add 1/2 cup chicken stock. Reduce by half. Add 1 cup heavy cream. Reduce to sauce consistency. Blend. Add salt to taste.

Method for Arugula Sauce Sweat shallots and garlic. Add 1/2 lb. fresh arugula. Deglaze with remaining white wine. Reduce by half. Add remaining chicken stock. Reduce by half.

Add 1/4 lb. arugula and 1 cup heavy cream. Simmer over low heat for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and place in blender. Add lemon juice, salt and remaining arugula. Blend for five minutes.

Method for Curried Eggplant Peel and dice eggplant. In sauté pan, heat remaining olive oil. Place diced eggplant in pan. Add butter, curry, salt and deglaze with honey. Remove from heat and deglaze with chicken stock. Set aside to cool.

Black Bass Season fish with salt and pepper on flesh side, not skin side. Add olive oil to sauté pan and place over high heat. When oil begins to smoke, place fish in pan and sear skin side down 2 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon of butter until butter turns brown. Remove from heat. Flip fish over for another 15 seconds.

To Serve On serving plate, place bass skin-side up. Place diced curried eggplant and fresh arugula leaves as garnish. Arrange Chermoula and Arugula sauce to taste. Serves 4.

When you are purchasing a property, a home inspection is an important aspect of the escrow process. When choosing a home inspection company, be sure the inspector is a Certified Home Inspector with the Arizona Board of Technical Registration. This is the same government agency that licenses engineers, architects and surveyors.

Secondly, know the experience level of the inspector. The state’s minimum requirement for obtaining a license is just 30 inspections. Look for an inspector that has hundreds of inspections under his or her belt.

Lastly, be sure that the inspector has Errors & Omissions insurance as well as General Liability Insurance.

President of AJF Engineering, a home inspection company in Scottsdale, stresses the importance of understanding the scope of an inspection. “An inspection is a VISUAL inspection of MAJOR systems that are ACCESSIBLE in the home.” To break it down, homebuyers should realize that an inspector will not take apart systems to evaluate them. It is a visual inspection only.

Secondly, they are there to inspect the major systems of a home such as heating, cooling, roofing, plumbing and electrical. They are not noting cosmetic issues such as scratches on a door or stained carpeting. Lastly, homebuyers should understand that an inspector cannot find problems with something that can’t be seen.

For instance, they wouldn’t be able to move furniture and tear up carpeting to see that there is a crack in the slab. They can only inspect areas of the home that are visible.

It’s important to also realize that an inspector determines the condition of the home on the day it is inspected.

For instance, with the recent period of no rain that we’ve had, it would be almost impossible for an inspector to see that a window seal might be loose and that water would drip in when it rained.

Sharon further explains, “Home inspectors are generalists. They have a strong knowledge of all the components and systems in a home. They are an excellent first line of defense for homebuyers in the evaluation of a home. A home inspector can find areas of concern or matters that may need further evaluation. If the inspector finds that there might be a problem with the A/ C unit, then the homebuyer can hire a licensed A/C contractor to further investigate the issue”.

A typical inspection takes about an hour per 1000 sq. ft. I always recommend that a potential homebuyer attend a portion of the inspection- usually near the end.

The inspector can describe their findings and show you first hand what they found. Also, an inspector is an excellent source for an education of the home. They can show you where breaker boxes are, specific operating instructions of items that may not be familiar to you, etc.
