Did you know that before the community and club were named Mirabel, it was called Stonehaven? The development originally consisted of over 900 acres with entitlements for 700 homes and a daily fee golf courses designed by Greg Norman. The course was complete and infrastructure was going in when the financial partner of the original owner wanted to divest the asset. Terrabrook, a masterplanned community developer based in Dallas, TX, was initially looking at assuming the financial position and partnering with the original owner but liked the projects potential so much they decided to acquire the development rights entirely. Because of the high-end nature Terrabrook envisioned for the project, the decision was made to bring Discovery Land Company in to manage the development. And I was lucky enough to be one of the first people hired as the Director of Sales.

Soon after the acquisition was finalized, it was determined that the existing Greg Norman golf course was not suitable for the new vision of the project which was to be a more intimate community with a private, member friendly golf course. Tom Fazio was brought in to redesign the course, and to the amazement of industry insiders, the decision was made to completely scrap the original layout, bulldoze what was there, and start over. In addition, the decision was made to carve out 713 prime acres of the over 900 total acres and lower the density to 350 homesites. The rest of the property was sold off to home builders and became what is now known as the Mirabel Villages.

Since the entire scope of the development was being retooled, it seemed only fitting to bestow the project with a new name and Mirabel become the moniker of choice. Mirabel, loosely translated, means to look at (Mira) beauty (bel). Extensive envisioning sessions were held to come up with the road map for what Mirabel should look and feel like when complete. Some of the underlying themes that were emphasized in setting out to create Mirabel are many of the things people love about it today. Terms like; friendly, warm, inviting, intimate, robust amenities, more than just a golf club, great food, highest level of service and quality yet unpretentious, became the charge of all involved.

An idea I had was adopted early on…… When the salespeople were driving guests around the community, everyone was to stop and wave. This included the guards, constructions workers, surveyors, golf maintenance people, etc. It was amazing to see the affect this had on prospective owners and it was apparent it made a huge impression on them. Gradually, as people began to move into the community, the wave had become a tradition and I still witness it every day while driving through the community. It is just one of the many great things about Mirabel that was once a vision and is now reality.
