Fortunately for us, our area is host to numerous lakes and surrounding recreational hot spots which offer a wealth of activities for all ages and interests. If you don’t own your own boat, we bet someone you know does! Here are a few places to check out and what to do once you’re there.

Lake Powell Ever worry about the chemicals you’re using to clean your home? From bleach and ammonia to other not-so-safe sounding chemicals you can’t even pronounce, these ingredients aren’t good for the planet and certainly aren’t good for you and your family, especially small children and pets. Certain ingredients have even been linked to asthma, skin irritations, and possibly even cancer. Unfortunately, no federal regulations exist when it comes to listing ingredients on cleaning product labels. But what should you avoid and what ingredients are a safer alternative?

Northwest of Phoenix, Lake Pleasant is the second largest in the area and the closest major lake to the North Phoenix area, making it popular for quick weekend getaways. It offers more than 10,000 acres of water and 114 miles of shoreline… all just 35 miles northwest of downtown. The Lake was created by the building of the Waddell Dam and the water is supplied by the Agua Fria River, making the water typically cool and refreshing. The Central Arizona Project Aqueduct also diverts water from the Colorado River to the lake.

Saguaro Lake

Formed in the 1920s by the damning of the Salt River, Saguaro Lake winds through the Tonto National Forest in the heart of the Sonoran Desert. Its proximity in the East Valley and 41 miles from downtown Phoenix, makes it a popular spot for those seeking to cool off amidst the beauty of this picturesque park. Thousands of Saguaro cacti dot the landscape and the blue lake water is one of the deepest and therefore coolest in the area. Aaahhh!

TOP ATTRACTIONS: Swimming, boating, and jet skiing.

OTHER THINGS TO DO: Fishing (Saguaro is filled with brown and rainbow trout, yellow and largemouth bass, and more), and wildlife viewing (keep your eyes open for big horn sheep, eagles, and mule deer).

Canyon Lake

Also formed by the damning of the Salt River, Canyon Lake is small but spectacular! Surrounded by red rock formations and steep canyon walls, this is one lake you will not forget visiting. This is the place for classic southwestern scenery, desert flora, and abundant wildlife.

TOP ATTRACTIONS: The natural beauty! Enjoy hiking and kayaking or canoeing to explore the shoreline and private coves. This lake also boasts a designated swimming area perfect for families.

OTHER THINGS TO DO: Boating, fishing, camping, and cruise tours on the Dolly Steamboat, aboard which you will hear tales of the surrounding Superstition Mountains.

PROCEDURE: 1. Roast garlic whole in extra virgin olive oil covered at 350 degrees for an hour. Remove garlic from the oil and chop. The oil can be used for the tomatoes.

2. Slice tomatoes about 1/4 inch thick and season with garlic oil and salt, pepper, and roast at 225 degrees for 45 minutes.

3. Quickly blanch broccolini in salted boiling water.

4. Seed and thinly slice chilies and toss with extra virgin olive and roast at 350 degrees until soft.

1/2 cup roasted red fresno chilies, chopped 1 Tbsp. chopped roasted garlic 1 Tbsp. chopped parsley for garnish fresh grated parmesan cheese for garnish 5. Stretch dough ball and place on pizza pan.

6. Distribute cheese evenly over dough and place roasted tomatoes evenly around.

7. Evenly distribute broccolini, chilies and roasted garlic around pizza.

8. Place into preheated oven at 400 degrees and cook 12-18 minutes or until desired doneness.

9. Slice pizza into 12 slices and garnish with chopped parsley and fresh grated parmesan cheese.

10. Enjoy!
