ust as it’s human nature to focus on the one negative critique of a movie or restaurant over the hundreds of positive responses, we tend to remember our failures more quickly and vividly than our successes in life. Why is that??

The term “failing upward” has gotten a bad rap in recent years thanks to high profile celebs and CEOs who inexplicably land on their feet after scandal or receive severance packages and cushy new jobs after being publicly fired for crimes and misdemeanors. However, the concept of failing in order to succeed is a positive reminder that you can’t have one without the other. (Especially when our intentions are for the greater good.)

It can be difficult to remember that when you’re in the heart of disappointment, whether receiving the 63rd rejection letter for your brilliant novel, losing a promotion to someone clearly less qualified, or risking your life savings on the business you started from the ground up only to watch doors close after two short years.

However, when we achieve perspective through time or a positive attitude, we often find the lessons that accompany those failures are golden. What if the 64th manuscript submission is accepted and optioned for movie rights? Perhaps the missed promotion resulted in a shift in focus and a better opportunity in the long run. Maybe unemployment plants the seed for a genius idea that recoups your savings and changes the world.

Even more futuristic, of course, are the “just walk out” Amazon Go stores, which are truly the cutting edge of payment technology. In cities that have one of these no-waiting-in-line stores, patrons can shop and take whatever they like and simply walk out the door. A receipt and charge will automatically be sent to your device via the credit card used on Amazon.com. The twelfth Amazon Go store recently opened its doors and it seems these quick stops are popular for small items such as coffee, water, snacks, and sandwiches. Although these stores will all now offer a pay-with-cash option (allowing those who don’t use banks to be customers), these seamless shops have proven to be quite popular. One can only wonder how long it will take for other brick-and-mortar stores to follow suit. It’s getting even easier to spend that paycheck, huh?

ash, checks, even credit cards are so yesterday. The new way to shop is all about ease. You don’t even have to open your (actual) wallet. Just let the virtual wallet in your smart device take charge of everything. Lucky us, spending money has never been so easy!

If you’re just getting used to inserting the chip end of your credit card instead of swiping it, don’t get too comfortable. (By the way, that magnetic stripe on the back of credit card is technology that has been around since the 1960s and it’s totally hackable, hence the creation of the more secure chip embedded in the card.) But the newest way to make purchases at the store is via near or contactless pay. That’s when the store’s point of sale terminal makes contact with your smart phone (or smart watch or tablet) and the transaction is done invisibly and automatically without you having to do more than tap or wave your device.

Known as Near Field Communication, it allows smart devices to communicate with each other when they are about 4 inches or less apart. (You have probably heard of or used Apple Pay already; Google’s mobile wallet runs on Android phones and Samsung Pay works on Samsung Galaxy devices.) No more

The key is not accepting failure as the last word. These are but a few famous folks who took this to heart and succeeded notably and exceptionally: STEVE JOBS | Everyone knows the story of Apple’s famous leader who actually got fired by his own company in 1985.
