aybe you’ve been locked inside one, played a game at home about one, or seen a movie focused on one.

Escape rooms are hot these days and it’s no surprise since these adventures are fast-paced interactive fun for all people and ages. And they’re big business. You may be surprised to learn the average escape room location generated just under $320,000 last year alone. Who knew there are more than 2,350 escape rooms in the United States? They aren’t completely new however with the first modern escape room as we know it tracing its roots to Japan in 2007.

For those who haven’t experienced one, what exactly is an escape room? Basically, it’s a game you play where people pay to go get “trapped” in a room (no, you’re never actually locked in) and then are tasked with finding clues and solving puzzles hidden throughout the room that will help them escape.

Each room usually has a theme—think a murder mystery or a jewel heist or even a popular movie theme. Players are tasked with finding clues to codes to unlock boxes and drawers to get through a final escape door.

Some newer escape rooms offer different types of virtual experiences, rather than traditional locks and codes.

Participants are given a certain amount of time to escape (usually about an hour) and if they don’t meet certain thresholds at certain elapsed times, game coordinators can give them helpful hints. Often times, gamers don’t escape before time runs out. In fact, only some 30 to 50 percent of people actually get out in time. The challenge is working together with your friends, family, or co-workers to decipher clues or figure out puzzles to escape in time.

Escape rooms are a great social activity perfect for pre-teen or teen birthday parties, as well as a fun thing to do during family reunions. They are also a popular team-bonding exercise for co-workers. It is a great way to get to know colleagues and learn how they approach problems, something that will invariably come up at work. And for those who can’t get out to one, consider picking up an escape room in a box, a board game that can be enjoyed at home. The idea was crowdfunded on Kickstarter, which only goes to show the genre’s popularity. One thing is certain: Either enjoyed out or at home, escape rooms are fun and challenging. Good luck!
