Run quick errands or simply have a fun destination in mind (think juice bar!) and let your legs propel you there. On the other hand, hitting the trails with your mountain bike might combine your need for awesome scenery with your desire to mix it up. Between easy wide trails and tricky single-tracks, your bike can take you places you may never get to by hiking. Biking is an excellent cardio workout but with minimal strain on your joints.

Thanks to wind, varied terrain, temperature variances and the constant challenge of inclines, declines and obstacles, you can expect to burn about 5% more calories and increase your agility by taking your usual routine outdoors. Plus, a study found that exercising en plein air drastically improves your mood, feelings of confidence and self-esteem.

YOGA Sometimes your yoga studio gets too familiar. Same old people next to you in class, same old scrambling for your preferred spot, etc. By taking your yoga discipline outside, you can really experience yoga as it was intended. “Being outdoors gives you access to a whole other world of sensations. It helps you feel part of a boundless existence, at one with an intelligent and sympathetic universe,” says Garrett Sarley Dinabandhu, president of the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in the Berkshire Mountains. Imagine digging your bare feet into the cool grass while a bird floats lazily by.

Märzen BBQ Sauce Ribs INGREDIENTS

FLAVORFUL

Alaska’s state capital is also one of its most beautiful cities and one of the most visited communities in the state. With so much to see and do, there’s certain to be something for you in Juneau.

Ribs 5 lbs

3 (12 oz)

4 ½ c

Baby back pork ribs, each slab cut into thirds Bottles of Gordon Biersch Märzen beer Water

Sauce ¼ c 1 large ¼ c 1 qt ¼ c ¼ c 1 bottle

Oil Onion Chopped garlic BBQ sauce Molasses Pureed canned chipotle chilies Gordon Biersch Märzen

DIRECTIONS Place ribs in a large pot. Cover with 50/50 mixture of Gordon Biersch Märzen and water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes. Turn off heat and let ribs cool to warm temperature.

Meanwhile, in a large pot, sauté onions and garlic in oil until translucent. Deglaze the pan with the bottle of Gordon Biersch Märzen. Stir in your favorite BBQ sauce, molasses and chipotle chilies (OR to taste – they’re hot!). Simmer over low heat, uncovered, for 30 – 60 minutes. When ribs are cool, drain off and discard liquid. In a large container, pour all BBQ Sauce over ribs and marinate in fridge a couple of hours or overnight.

To finish, grill ribs over high flame until the sauce has caramelized on the outside of the ribs. Dip in the BBQ sauce remaining in the container a couple of times while grilling.

Total grilling time approx 5 minutes per side. Serve with additional sauce if desired.
