Retirement communities or nursing homes are not necessarily a good fit and they can be cost prohibitive. Luckily, today’s living arrangements offer lots of possibilities for keeping mom or dad close by, while also allowing them to have some independence and you to have some privacy.

Having a separate but small home or apartment on your property is the perfect arrangement for many elderly people looking to move closer to their grown children. Known as casitas, granny apartments, or flats, mother-in-law cabins, or carriage houses, depending on what part of the country you live in, these tiny homes can be the perfect spot for keeping an eye on your aging mother or father. Sprinkle evenly with cheese. Top with tomatoes, olives and green onions. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve with tortilla chips, if desired.
