hen Hurricane Florence hit the North Carolina coast last year, overseers of the famous Outer Banks wild horses reassured a concerned public that the herd didn’t require intervention or evacuation. Indeed, the horses have survived on the barrier island for five centuries and weathered the latest storm just as well.

When you visit the Smithsonian, you are entering the world’s largest museum, education and research with approximately 154 million artifacts and specimens in it trust for the American people. The Smithsonian offers 11 museums and galleries in the National Mall and 7 other museums and parks in the Washington, D.C. area. Want to take a walk in the park? As much of a symbol of our country as the bald eagle, mustangs (from the Spanish word mestengo, meaning mixed stray) represent the wild and wideopen spaces of America. The earliest version of the species appeared about fifty million years ago on this continent, but today’s mustangs weren’t originally wild or native to North America; they’re the descendants of a number of hardy horses left behind by 16th Century Spaniards in the New World.

By the 1800s there were estimated to be more than 2 million horses roaming free. With few natural predators, they vied with livestock for grass causing angry ranchers to declare open season on the herds, decimating their numbers. A public outcry spurred the government to intervene and in 1971 the Wild-Free Roaming Horse & Burro act was passed, providing federal protection.

There are now more than 60,000 wild horses roaming in North America.

Conflicts continue as herds thrive beyond their quotas, but advocates work tirelessly to protect the horses through adoption programs, birth control and public education – a well-meaning tourist can kill a wild horse with a simple piece of fruit.

Chincoteague, VA – Elevated to fame by the children’s book Misty of Chincoteague, this herd is known for its annual swim across Chesapeake Bay. Pryor Mountain Range, MT & WY – These horses are directly descended from the colonial Spanish horses and wander more than 31,000 protected acres.

Little Book Cliffs, CO – Biking or hiking are the ideal ways to see this herd in the rugged western terrain. They’ve been genetically linked to the Indian ponies brought to the area by the Utes.

Virginia Range, NV – The ancestors of this herd east of Reno was at the center of the movement that resulted in federal acts protecting all of American’s wild horses – and we’re so happy this icon of freedom still roams the land!

Internships, apprenticeships and fellowships are all options that allow young people to learn a trade working with experts in their chosen field. In the case of the Thiel Fellowship, a chosen few applicants are awarded $100,000 to bypass university and pursue a business idea with the help of top industry mentors.

The student debt in our country has exceeded $1 trillion which is financially crippling degreeearners for years to come. Thankfully, times have changed from the days when a graduate’s choices were limited to college, a local factory job or homemaker. Today there are numerous options and opportunities that don’t require a pricey four-year university.

Volunteering for programs like the Peace Corps can be a fulfilling way to help others while traveling the world. Similarly, the military provides practical skills, potential travel, as well as an affordable education after serving.

The choice for many is entering the job market – if they haven’t already – but gone are the days of working for the same company until retirement.

Finding employment that’s a great fit and pays well often takes time and several job changes. Many companies now prefer experience to degrees so building that resume will benefit the long-term objectives. On-the-job education is priceless.

It’s an extraordinary experience to see the wild herds in their habitat so be sure to read up on facts and restrictions before visiting one of the locations. In addition to the Outer Banks, here are but a few other popular U.S. herds: Tonto National Forest, AZ – Efforts to round up and remove the Salt River ponies were successfully blocked in recent years so visitors can still see the herd northeast of Phoenix.

If furthering education without the debilitating debt is the goal, there are still avenues to explore. Community college requires substantially less tuition and can be a stepping stone to a university while allaying some of the higher costs. It also enables students to save money living at home as they get a handle on their future plans.

Trade schools and technical colleges are ideal for acquiring specialized training and certification such as dental hygiene, carpentry or web design – without taking unrelated courses like algebra or English composition. Again, with internet access online classes and education resources are limitless.

t used to be the bold and carefree decision of graduating teenagers to take a year off and backpack through Europe before following their more responsible, expected college trajectory. Beet Salad INGREDIENTS 2 cups

Arugula

1/3 cup

Cooked edemame

1 cup

Orange slices

1/4 cup

Goat cheese

2 tsp

Red wine vinegar

3 tbl

Olive oil, divided

1 tbl

Balsamic vinegar

2 large beets, any color (about 11 ounces total)

DIRECTIONS Cut stem and root ends from beets; peel. Cut into ½-inch slices. Place on foillined baking sheet; brush slices on both sides with 1 tablespoon oil. Bake at 350° F for 30 to 35 minutes or until tender. Cool and cut into bite sized wedges.

Whisk remaining 2 tablespoons oil, balsamic vinegar, wine vinegar, salt and pepper in small bowl. Place arugula, beets, oranges and edamame in large bowl. Pour dressing over salad; toss to coat. Sprinkle with goat cheese.
