For those funny friends out there who are ready to brave the stage, all you need to do is find an open mic night in your neighborhood. (Search for one on Google and you’ll be surprised how many opportunities are out there!) Sign up, take a deep breath, and just head on stage. A few pointers, from those who’ve gone before you: Be yourself (don’t try to act like Jerry Seinfeld or Chris Rock); have a practiced routine (on stage is not the place to do a dry run on new material); and never, ever borrow somebody else’s jokes, no matter how different you feel you’ve made them. (Apparently, that’s the cardinal sin of comics.) And, of course, it doesn’t hurt to have a tough skin. It’s notoriously hard to make it in the comedy business, so you’ve got to get used to bombing … and even getting heckled. For those who are not yet ready to hit the stage, why not try dipping your toe in the water by taking a stand-up comedy class. Usually taught by an industry insider or seasoned comic, taking a class gives you tips on how to craft your act, where to find good material for your jokes (keep a notebook with you at all times!), the dos and don’ts while onstage, how to tell a good story, and what to do if you get heckled. Plus, a class provides you guaranteed time in front of other aspiring comics who can give you feedback on your act before you take it out on the road. Some comedy courses will also help you with getting gigs and bookings and can help guide you in finding an agent to represent you. Another feature some teachers offer is filming your comedy act and then watching it together as a class to critique it. With some advice and lots of practice you could just be a hit.
