ou would be hard-pressed to walk down a bustling, business-lined street these days and not see at least one storefront with the letters CBD in their window. So, what exactly is this ubiquitous industry, and did it seemingly grow overnight?

WHAT IS CBD?

Visitors come from near and far to wander through the beautiful marble chambers that make up New Orleans Cemeteries, scattered throughout several neighborhoods. Built originally by early French settlers as a response to the problem of burying the dead in a place below sea level, these above-ground burial sites are now a memorable tourist attraction rich in history.

CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is a chemical compound from the plant Cannabis sativa. The cannabis plant is also known as marijuana or hemp, which is made up of CBD and THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) – the former a non-psychoactive natural substance and the latter being the ingredient that makes pot so darn popular.

Although the federal and state governments have been wrangling for years over the legality of marijuana, the Hemp Farming Act of 2018 officially legalized hemp-derived products. There is no THC in the over-the-counter CBD products, but it has shown other benefits which is why CBD merchandise is so widely available now.

WHAT CBD DOES The elements of CBD have been shown to provide a natural calming effect often associated with cannabis. The FDA has approved a CBD-based medication called Epidiolex for certain types of epilepsy, however other health benefits are primarily anecdotal at this point.

Talk to any CBD advocate and they’ll tell you the benefits are plentiful. The oil is known to mellow the nervous system which can aid in both anxiety and pain management. The availability and addition of CBD to a vast array of products from edibles and vape products to tinctures and bath bombs has made it both appealing and accessible to the curious masses.

(Can you even imagine quarantining without Netflix, Hulu, or Disney+?) At least that’s one good thing we’re living through, right?

Of course, television has its own history of ups and downs. The first golden era of TV took place from the late 1940s through the late 1950s. TV was relatively new and there wasn’t yet a television set in every home. Shows were comparatively few and far between and they were quite highbrow—think Shakespearean plays, opera, ballet, and the first Walt Disney programs. Musicals such as Peter Pan and The Wizard of Oz debuted. It was the kind of programming you gathered the whole family together to tune in to a special show.

Eventually, television evolved and grew from a few channels to so many in number that “channel surfing” became a catchphrase.

Remember Bruce Springsteen’s 1992 “57 Channels (And Nothin’ On)” song? Then came the unscripted reality TV era, which peaked in the early 1990s and again in the early 2000s (think “Real World,” “Survivor,” and “Big Brother.”) A bit of a cultural wasteland, really. Of course, the Bachelor is still with us.

In the last several years, with the dawn of streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and more fringe channels all vying for our eyeballs, the viewing options are vast and varied.

In fact, between 2011 and 2016 scripted TV shows increased by 71 percent. In 2018, there were 495 original scripted TV shows, compared to only 182 in 2002. It now feels like there’s almost too much content to keep up with (and, of course, not all of it is good). Still, having more choices as we remain increasingly at home is good news we can all use.
