Located in Tuba City, the Navajo Code Talkers Museum highlights the brave soldiers who made a significant impact in America’s success in the Pacific theater of Word War II. The Code Talker’s main job was to talk and transmit information on tactics, troop movements, orders and other vital battlefield information via telegraphs and radios in their native dialect. A major advantage of the code talking system was its speed. The method of using Morse code often took hours whereas, the Navajos handled a message in minutes. It has been said that if it was not for the Navajo Code Talkers, the Marines would have never taken Iwo Jima.

Today, the Navajo Code Talkers Museum has actual gear and tools used in battle, victory stories, transcripts of a Code Talker and exceptionally detailed photos.

First off, when is the World Cup? The games run from June 7 through July 7, 2019, in nine cities throughout France. The competition takes place every four years and the U.S. is the current reigning champion, having beaten Japan (5-2) in 2015. Who else is in? The World Cup is stage to 24 international teams that compete in individual qualifying tournaments. This year’s teams include Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC); Cameroon, Nigeria, and South Africa from the Confederation of African Football (CAF); Canada, Jamaica, and the United States from the Confederation of North, Central American, and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF); Argentina, Brazil, and Chile from the Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol (CONMEBOL); New Zealand from the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC); and England, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Scotland, Spain, and Sweden from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).

Who are some of the top stars to look for in France? Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd, Julie Ertz, Crystal Dunn, and Ashlyn Harris are just a few of the elite players making an appearance this year. And what do these athletes win if they get to the end of the bracket? They compete to win the trophy … and of course the prize money. FIFA, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, made news last year by announcing that they would increase the amount of money paid to women’s soccer players who are paid significantly less than the men who win the World Cup. Though FIFA has doubled the winning women’s team pay from $15 million to $30 million, the total amount of monies given to all participating women’s teams is $50 million. Critics say this isn’t nearly enough. Consider that the previous male World Cup winning team was paid $38 million and the total prize money was $400 million. You read that right … that’s two zeros! That seems like some pay gap to us.

Have a creative child? If your young Frida Kahlo is turning your driveway purple, designate a spot for her outdoor art by hanging a chalkboard on a backyard fence or near a patio. Large built-in chalkboards can be installed as part of a fence or you can use chalkboard paint on an outdoor wall to create a mural-worthy spot just for them. If you have a thespian in your clan, why not create an outdoor playhouse for him with a stage for putting on al fresco theatrical performances under the stars. Or circle up a few teepees for a group of best buds to make an exciting overnight outdoor adventure. Just don’t forget the s’mores! If you don’t have the yard space, look up and build a tree house as simple or as grand as you desire. The sky’s the limit!

Got gamers? Get them away from the Xbox and out into nature by moving the games into the backyard. Classic board games such as checkers, chess, Jenga, and Twister have all been reimagined on a large scale and can be used outdoors on the lawn. (For Twister, all you need is paint to make the circles

right on the grass.) Older kids will love a simple game of corn hole, croquet, KanJam, and good old badminton, too. Even a plain old balloon for a game of “keep it up” in the backyard will be surprisingly satisfying for kids of all ages (and the dog, too!). Fill them with water and you’ve got even more summer fun on your hands. Water balloon fight, anyone?

For on-the-go athletic kids who are always looking for more adventure, consider installing a zip line in your yard. If you’ve got the space and the engineering know-how you can create an outdoor arena the whole neighborhood will envy. While you’re at it, try installing a small climbing wall to keep everyone active at once. And don’t forget the perennial favorite: a swing.

In case you missed it, they’ve qualified every year since the tournament’s existence, winning in 1991, 1999, and 2015. Here’s what you need to know about the kick-off of this exciting sports event.

INGREDIENTS 2 cloves Garlic

1/2 tsp

Salt

8 oz

Peeled shrimp

1/4 cup

Shredded Parmesan Cheese

9 oz

Linguine

1 cup

Chicken broth, warmed

1 tbl

Olive oil

1 cup

Cilantro

1/4 tsp

Black pepper

Avocados, pitted and peeled

2 tbl

Lemon juice

DIRECTIONS Prepare pasta according to package directions. Place avocados, cilantro, cheese, lemon juice, salt and pepper in food processor; cover. Process until smooth.

Heat oil in large skillet over medium-high heat. Add shrimp; cook, stirring frequently, for 2 to 3 minutes or until shrimp turn pink. Add garlic; cook for 30 seconds. Drain pasta; add to skillet. Stir in avocado pesto and broth. Cook until heated through. Serve with additional cheese if desired.
