ow that many of us are working from our dining rooms, kitchens, and, sometimes even our bedrooms, why not create or reinvent your ideal home office space? Time to take your WFH area—be it a cozy corner or a complete wood-paneled den—from unruly to unmatched. How to get started?

Follow the four Ds: designate, design, declutter, and decorate.

Restored by the Rio Salado Foundation and the City of Tempe, Eisendrath House is a historic landmark dating back nearly 100 years. The home was originally commissioned by wealthy Chicago resident Rose Eisendrath, who spent her winters exploring the Southwest as one of Arizona’s first “snowbird residents”. Family friend and noted Arizona architect Robert T. Evans designed the adobe structure, which sits on 9 acres of open Sonoran Desert landscape. Set with period furniture and galleries of education panels, the home now serves as a museum highlighting Evans and the valley’s adobe revival in the 30s and 40s.

First off, designate an area or room to be your home office. Maybe you’re lucky enough to have a traditional home office complete with the ubiquitous bookshelf. If you don’t, consider turning an unused guest room or even a part of the basement or a corner of the kitchen into your unique space. Just remember: When you’re in this zone, you need to think, “I am at my office.”

Report here at certain hours and actually be productive while you’re there.

Next, create a design. You will be working here so you’ll need essentials: a desk or table, a comfortable desk chair, a computer, a printer, lighting, and easy access to electrical outlets. (Hopefully, you’ve already got Wi-Fi all set up.) Can you be efficient and easily do the tasks at hand without moving too far around? Make sure there’s plentiful task lighting and if you’ll be doing conference calls, try to position your desk with natural light shining on you and not behind you for the best video quality.

Now it’s time to declutter. After all, as you’re Zooming, do you really want to be wondering, “What’s behind me? Can people see that dirty coffee mug?”

Clear your workspace and keep it free of non-work-related items. Try a Zoom or House Party call with a friend and ask what they can see, then edit out anything you don’t want others peeking at (i.e., laundry, personal photos, open closets, and anything you’d prefer to have under wraps). It’s also wise to remove any distractions, such as a TV, magazines, or snack foods.

Lastly, the fun part: Time to decorate. Organize your papers, pens, books, and other necessities to get your job done. Pick a fun color or a streamlined design scheme and stick with it. After all, your space doesn’t need to be devoid of personality. Books, art, and colorful home décor, can all be a signature of your at-home work style. With a few tweaks you can make your home office space organized, chic, and the envy of the video chat.

ark your calendars! July is taking on a new moniker: Dry July. Never heard of it? Dry July and Sober October are part of the “sober curious” or “sober sometimes” movement. The idea began years ago as a New Year’s resolution of sorts, with people trying a “Dry January” mini alcohol detox.

Now some folks are choosing one month on the calendar and pledging to be booze free for 30 days just to see how it makes them feel. Some return to moderate drinking, others give up alcohol altogether.

Why are people questioning their relationship with booze? It turns out, we like to drink in this country. In fact, 86.3 percent of people ages 18 or older have drank alcohol at some point in their lifetime, according to a 2018 survey by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The study also showed that 26 percent of adults engaged in binge drinking and some 6 percent reported they engaged in heavy alcohol use in the month prior to the survey. Of course, many people don’t abuse alcohol, but

People who take an alcohol break have discovered that they actually feel much better overall. They say they sleep and look better and are more productive and creative at work and at home. And several studies have backed this up, showing moderate improvements in insulin sensitivity, high blood pressure numbers, liver and brain function, as well as weight loss, even after just a short break from alcohol consumption. Of course, for those who have a real alcohol dependency (and that’s some 17 million Americans), this is not enough of a solution. But for people who causally enjoy a drink or two daily, being sober sometimes may be just the thing they need to live a better life.

Want to learn more about the sober curious movement? Look for alcohol-free social clubs or booze-free bars in your area. Bring a like-minded friend or two and try a mocktail or non-alcoholic beer. Of course, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy the social aspect of a traditional pub with a delicious sans alcohol spritzer in your hand. Hitting the pause button on drinking may help you realize alcohol just isn’t for you anymore. Whatever you decide, here’s to your health.

Tropical Burgers INGREDIENTS 6 Whole grain hamburgers buns

½ tsp Kosher salt

6 Fresh pineapple rings (1/2-inch thick)

1 tbl Worcestershire sauce

2 lbs 85% lean ground beef

¼ cup Low-fat 2% evaporated milk

1 Large clove garlic, finely chopped

1 slice White sandwich bread

½ tsp Ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS Preheat grill to medium-high. Mash bread and evaporated milk in a small bowl and stir in Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and garlic. Gently mix bread mixture into beef. Divide into 6 equal portions and form patties 3/4-inch thick and 4 inched in diameter.

Using thumb or fingertips, press shallow indentation in centers of patties to help cook evenly. Sprinkle both sides with salt and pepper if desired.

Grill patties for 3 to 4 minutes with grill-lid closed. Flip patties and grill an additional 3 to 4 minutes or until desired doneness.

LIFEWISE

Grill pineapple slices for 2 minutes on each side or until heated through and grill marks appear. Place on patties and assemble bun with additional toppings as desired. Wait for burger to cool slightly before enjoying.
