Brad Hunter, chief economist with Colorado-based HomeAdvisor Inc., said Phoenix has some advantages in 2017 compared to other markets.

So Hunter expects healthy gains in 2017.

The market ended 2016 with its best year for sales volume since 2006. Sales of new and existing homes totaled 115,837 in 2016, according to RL BrownHousing Reports.

Existing home sales totaled 99,955 – up 7.9 percent from 2015 — and new home sales were up 32 percent from last year ending 2016 with 15,882 closing, according to RL Brown The run up in rental prices could propel more younger demographics to move towards home purchases. When rental prices are starting to hit $1,600 and $1,700 per month, the economics of buying a house and the mortgage interest deduction makes more sense. Lugo said the prospect of higher interest rates could encourage potential purchasers to move forward before mortgages get more expensive.
