all is the ideal time to get outdoors and take a hike. Whether you’re looking to head to the mountains or seeking out a desert destination now that the temps are cooler, we’re highlighting a few special trails and parks throughout the continental U.S.
Starting in the east, Acadia National Park in Maine is a trekker’s paradise. Hike up the Cadillac North Ridge Trail to enjoy views of the Pine Tree State’s small coastal islands. Standing proud at 1,530 feet, Cadillac Mountain is the tallest mountain on the east coast. After a long day of hiking, be sure to stop by Jordan Pond House Restaurant, located within the park, for tea and popovers. You can’t think of hiking in the East without considering the Appalachian Trail, which runs though Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. With more than 500 miles of hiking trails (101 miles of which are on the Appalachian Trail) and 200,000 acres of protected lands, Shenandoah is breathtaking in its vastness. Take the 1.4-mile Dark Hollow Falls Trail to see this gorgeous and easiest-to-get-to waterfall. Heading west, stop off in Boulder, Colorado, where visitors will find Chautauqua Trail in Chautauqua Park nestled at the base of the Flatirons. Home to a plethora of hiking trails for novices and experienced hikers alike, the majestic Chautauqua Park lands were preserved more than 100 years ago. This moderate trail is about a mile in length and offers views of the striking flatirons and, if you’re lucky, renowned Colorado wildflowers. No hiking list would be complete without mentioning the South Rim Trail in Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Offering easy and expert level hikes with views of the canyon and the Colorado River rumbling below, this is one to put on your bucket list. Of course, Arizona is also home to the Cathedral Rock Trail in Red Rock State Park in Sedona, a famed hiking spot popular with photographers and backpackers alike. With an endless amount of trails, Sedona is a hiker’s paradise. Heading north, it’s worth considering a mountainous trail such as the short but steep Nisqually Vista Trail in Mount Rainier National Park. Rising 14,410 feet above sea level, Mount Rainier is the fifth tallest mountain in the continental U.S. with more than 260 miles of maintained trails through old-growth forests, subalpine meadows, and mountainous vistas. Finally, for unmatched views of the Pacific Ocean, try hiking Point Lobos Loop Trail in Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. Located near Carmel-bythe-Sea, California, this stunning trail takes you by rocky beaches, tidal pools, and hidden coves. The park, which gets its name from the barking sound of sea lions reminiscent of wolves howling, is home to abundant wildlife, including seabirds, seals, sea lions, sea otters, and gray whales. This one is not to be missed!

Head-to-Toe Health Are You Covered? E
ven if you pride yourself on excellent self-care, there may be areas that are being overlooked. When you put on sunscreen, do you remember to put it in the part of your hair? When you stretch, do you think about the small muscles in your feet? These habits are frequently forgotten, but easy to correct and improve our health and wellness. Eyes — With so much time spent in front of screens, our eyes are under quite a bit of strain. Consider wearing blue-light blocking glasses when you’re watching TV, working at your computer, or scrolling through your phone – those hours add up! To soothe overtired eyes, try using a heated eye mask. Electronic masks ensure the heat is kept at a safe temperature to lubricate eyes and relieve burning and dryness. Lips — Cold weather, dryness, and sun exposure can cause lips to become cracked and chapped. As a preventative measure, look for a lip balm with SPF to reapply throughout the day. Many brands offer clear protective lip balms as well as tinted options. Using a daily lip scrub to get rid of excess skin and product and an overnight lip mask to deeply hydrate will keep your smile plump and healthy, adding only a couple extra minutes to your routine. Neck — The muscles in our neck are often tensed up from sitting hunched over a desk, scrunched at an odd angle while sleeping, and just carrying around our heavy heads. If you’re planning a long work session, set timers on your phone to remind yourself to take a break and gently stretch your neck and reset your posture. An at-home neck traction device is a simple way to help realign your spine while giving your neck a rest. For an extra indulgence, choose a heated option that will help release muscle tension. Gut — Gut health is important to our energy levels and daily mood. A healthy diet rich in natural fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed foods will create a strong foundation. When nutrition alone isn’t cutting it, supplements can fill in the gaps. Depending on your lifestyle, eating habits, and concerns, research add-ons like prebiotics and probiotics to maintain a healthy balance of bacteria, collagen for a strong digestive track, and licorice root to soothe stomach lining. Always consult a physician before adding any supplements to your diet.
