Hammond’s was just a small family business when it was founded in 1920, but it’s grown past it’s Denver roots into an iconic and international brand of sweets and candy. Part of Hammond’s unique charm is the meticulous process of handcrafting treats start to finish. Visitors can get a behind-the-scenes look at the candy-making process during a special factory tour. Large video screens installed throughout the factory allow guests to get a good look at how lollipops, candy canes, and other Hammond’s favorites are pulled, twisted, shaped, and packaged.

ext time you’re out and about in nature, listen and look around. You may just catch a glimpse of one of the 19 different kinds of owls that live in the United States. Some of these feathered friends are relatively common…if you know where to search. Others are extremely rare and hard to spot.

Not surprisingly, most owls are nocturnal so you have the best chance of seeing one when they come out to hunt and eat at night. However, a few of these cute creatures are actually diurnal, meaning they fly and roam about during the day. These include the small, adorable yellow-beaked Northern Pygmy Owl, which nests in tree cavities and can be found in wooded areas; the rarely-seen Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, a small, striped sunshine-loving owl that lives in the Southwest; and the small, long-legged Burrowing Owl, which inhabits abandoned prairie dog and groundhog burrows and is often seen in the open habitats of the countryside.

The remaining 16 owls are mostly nocturnal. These include two large owls: the biggest and boldest of them all, the often-viewed, yellow-eyed Great Horned Owl, which can be seen hunting at dusk in a wide variety of habitats, and the surprised-looking Long-Eared Owl, sometimes spotted in dense trees for nesting, or on the hunt, in open prairies and meadows.

One of the most easily identified owls is the Barn Owl, with its spooky, white heart-shaped face and loud cries. Though common, this elusive hunter is rarely seen, sometimes living in abandoned buildings in both farmland and cities.

Many of our owls are mostly small and harder to find. These include the tiniest of them all, the aptly named Elf Owl, which can fit in the palm of your hand, located mostly in the Sonoran Desert region. Moving to the canyons, you might spy the cute, small Western Screech Owl, nesting in tree holes.

Preferring the open grasslands, the endangered Short-Eared Owl, with its round head and tiny ears, nests on the ground and is a very rare sighting. The remaining owls mostly prefer the forest. These include the small, reddish-gray Flammulated Owl; the easy-to-identify and threatened Spotted Owl; the small, toughlooking Whiskered Screech Owl, preferring higher elevations of mountain regions; and finally the small and adorable Northern Saw-Whet Owl, found in northern regions.

Other owl species found in the United States include the Barred Owl, Boreal Owl, Eastern Screech Owl, Great Gray Owl, the Short-Eared Owl, and the rare Snowy Owl. With so many different owls to admire, why not get outdoors and see how many you can spot? It’s a real hoot!

BLUE (DA BA DEE) – EIFFEL 65 Can you already hear this song after just reading the title? The Eurodance bop by Italian music group Eiffel 65 swept the globe, reaching number one in charts of at least 18 countries. With its pulsing techno beat and repetitive lyrics, it was a song that was sure to get stuck in your head. The song was nominated for a 2001 Grammy for Best Dance Recording.

I TRY – MACY GRAY The second single from Gray’s debut album, “I Try” remains the singer’s biggest hit. Her distinct vocals lent themselves well to the soulful song and gained international attention. The song won for Best New Artist at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards and later, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 2001 Grammy’s.

an you remember what life was like at the turn of the new millennium? Fear of the Y2K bug had dispelled, The St. Louis Rams would defeat the Tennessee Titans to win Super Bowl XXXIV, Sydney was hosting the Summer Olympics, internet usage was growing rapidly, and mobile phones were starting to be considered an essential consumer product.

In this simpler time before smart phones and Bluetooth technology allowed for tailored music selection, the radio was still a staple in entertainment. Whether you liked them or not, you probably heard the most popular songs played on your drive to work or at the shopping mall. Music is a powerful and lasting tool in stimulating memory and emotions, so let’s revisit four of the biggest hits across genres and see which you remember.

BREATHE – FAITH HILL Faith Hill topped both country and pop charts with the power ballad “Breathe.”

It remained in some position on the tracking charts for a whopping 53 weeks and ended the year as Billboard’s number one single. The song was from her album of the same name, which scored the singer a Grammy and remains one of the most successful country/pop albums to date.

MEET VIRGINIA – TRAIN The American roots rock band started 2000 off with a bang when their single peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January. It marked the group’s first appearance in the top20 charts – an impressive feat for the industry newcomers. Train would, of course, go on to be an enduring success.

GRILLED CHICKEN WITH CHIMICHURRI INGREDIENTS 1 cup

Parsley Leaves

1/4 tsp

Ground Black Pepper

2 tbs

Oregano

2 tbs

Sherry Vinegar

1 to 3

Garlic Cloves, Peeled

1/4 cup

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

1/4 tsp

Chicken Flavor Bouillon

Chicken Breast Halves

1/4 tsp

Red Pepper Flakes

Salt to Taste

DIRECTIONS Put parsley, oregano, garlic, MAGGI Granulated Chicken, red pepper flakes and ground pepper in a food processor. Process until finely chopped.

Add the oil and vinegar. Press until the mixture is combined.

Preheat the grill to medium-high. Season the chicken with salt and pepper.

Roast the chicken on each side for 6 to 7 minutes or until it is not pink and the juices are transparent. With a spoon, put 2 tablespoons of chimichurri on each chicken breast and serve.
