A WORD ABOUT OUR VENUES The Desert Chorale has the privilege of performing in some of the most beautiful, historic venues in New Mexico that provide the acoustic quality needed for excellent choral performance. While many of the venues and the music we sing represent specific religious or cultural traditions, we celebrate the diversity of faith, thought, artistry and human experiences represented by the music performed in these spaces. We hope that this shared musical experience transcends and binds the audience, as we seek to be inspired by the power of great choral music.

JOSHUA HABERMANN a word from

Of all the traditions associated with the holidays, music stands alone as the essential element. Indeed, at what other season would we take to the streets, bundled up against the winter cold, singing from door to door? Some of my fondest memories of this time of year are of caroling with my friends, up and down the hills of our San Francisco neighborhood. Often surprised by our ability to improvise four-part harmonies, neighbors would give us snacks and sometimes even bottles of wine, most often confiscated by parents when we got home. Now that we are parents ourselves we take our children caroling, and see their faces light up at the smiles and applause. Ever changing yet ever constant, the human voice is the essential instrument, and singing is richly woven into the rhythms of this season. This year the Desert Chorale presents a broad tapestry of vocal music. From our signature program to the latest in cuttingedge a cappella vocal music, there is something for everyone to enjoy and discover. We welcome you to our community, and this, our thirty-second year of bringing glorious choral music to New Mexico. We wish you all the joy of the season, and hope that the music that we share rekindles memories of happy days gone by, and inspires dreams for those yet to come. With warmest wishes,

JOSHUA HABERMANN Music Director, Santa Fe Desert Chorale

ABOUT THE DESERT CHORALE For more than 30 years, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale has been one of the nation’s preeminent choral ensembles. With nationally recognized, professional singers performing music spanning seven centuries, the Desert Chorale presents a Summer Festival and Winter Festival each season. The organization also conducts educational outreach, commissions new works from international composers and reaches nearly 10,000 people each year from across the country and around the world. Today, music director Joshua Habermann leads the group of 24 singers in a range of concerts featuring eclectic repertoire from Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th Century masters, as well as new and specially commissioned works by contemporary composers. Founder Lawrence Bandfield (1933–2009) conducted the first season in 1983 and established the Desert Chorale as New Mexico’s first professional choir. A champion of Hispanic music, Mr. Bandfield collaborated with scholars throughout the United States to revive some of the great sacred music that arrived in the Americas via the Spanish Empire. Not only were Mr. Bandfield and the Desert Chorale instrumental in the preservation of Hispanic music, but they also added to the repertoire with commissions of new music representative of the eclectic cultures of northern New Mexico. The values that founder Lawrence Bandfield established sustain the Desert Chorale today: diverse repertory performed by the finest professional musicians, an intimate rapport with audience members and supporters, and strong relationships within the community of Northern New Mexico, including collaborations with the Santa Fe Opera, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Santa Fe Symphony and Chorus, Santa Fe New Music, Santa Fe Pro Musica, University of New Mexico and the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. Youth education and community outreach remain an important part of the Desert Chorale’s mission, and have included: All-County Youth Chorus, the Desert Chorale’s Children’s Choir, public lectures, pre-concert lectures, open rehearsals and performances at community events on the Plaza and elsewhere in the city, at schools and at senior residence communities.

artist biographies

VOASIS DEKE SHARON Born in San Francisco, DEKE SHARON (producer, VOASIS) has been performing professionally since eight years old, and as a child toured North America and shared the stage in operas with the likes of Pavarotti. He is heralded as “The father of contemporary a cappella,” having created, in college, the dense vocal-instrumental sound of modern a cappella, and taking it to the world. As the founder, director and arranger for the House Jacks, the original “Rock Band Without Instruments,” Deke has shared the stage with countless music legends, including Ray Charles, James Brown, Crosby Stills and Nash, Run DMC, The Temptations, LL Cool J and the Four Tops, and has performed for luminaries including President Bill Clinton. The House Jacks have eight albums, and dozens of international tours to their name. They have made multiple appearances at Carnegie Hall, and performed the Monday Night Football Theme with Hank Williams, Jr. in 2011. Deke produces “The Sing-Off” worldwide (USA, Netherlands, China), which had the highest ratings of any new, unscripted television show in the United States in 2009, and was the third-highest rated show on NBC in 2010. In addition, Deke served as arranger, on-site music director and vocal producer for Universal’s Pitch Perfect starring Anna Kendrick (2012). Deke founded the Contemporary A Cappella Society while in college, and is responsible for many seminal a cappella programs, including the CARAs (Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards, ICCAs (International Championship of College A Cappella), BOCA (Best of College A Cappella Compilation), the first contemporary a cappella conferences (the A Cappella Summit), the new Contemporary A Cappella League, and the YouTube channel “Inside A Cappella.” He is also contemporary a cappella’s most prolific arranger, having arranged over 2,000 songs, many of them in print worldwide with Hal Leonard/Contemporary A Cappella Publishing. His first book, “A Cappella Arranging” was published in 2012. He has produced dozens of award-winning a cappella albums (including Straight No Chaser, Committed, Nota, Street Corner Symphony and the Tufts’ Beelzebubs), created a cappella groups for Disneyland and Disneyworld, and frequently tours the world teaching a variety of topics to students and professional singers. His voice can be heard in commercials and video games, most recently in “Just Dance Kids 2.”

GENEVIEVE ARTADI, mezzo soprano, is a singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, CA whose music often blends electronic, pop, indie and jazz elements. Her two main projects are Pollyn and KNOWER, electro-pop groups in which she is cofounder and front woman, and has recorded multiple albums. Genevieve currently teaches in the Bachelor and Certificate Vocal Programs at Musician’s Institute in Hollywood, and is writing and recording new material for her two electro-pop bands as well as her solo album. On the a cappella front, in addition to singing in Voasis, Genevieve is also a member of avant-garde vocal group Arf as a singer and writer-arranger.
