PERFORMANCE VENUE & INFORMATION
The Desert Chorale has the privilege of performing in some of the most beautiful and historic venues in New Mexico that provide the acoustic quality needed for excellent choral performances. While many of the venues and the music we sing represent specific religious or cultural traditions, we celebrate the diversity of faith, thought, artistry, and human experiences represented by the music performed in these spaces. We hope that this shared musical experience transcends and binds the audience, as we seek to be inspired by the power of great choral music.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Emma Marzen Welcome!
On this magical December evening with holiday lights and farolitos glistening all around, I’m delighted to welcome you to Carols & Lullabies, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale’s annual winter festival. Our ensemble brings together remarkable singers from across the nation, each contributing their unique artistry to create the exceptional performances that have become our hallmark. Whether you’re experiencing your first Desert Chorale concert or you’re a longtime friend, we are thrilled that you have chosen to include us in your holiday festivities.
The coming year holds incredible promise for the Desert Chorale. As you await the start of the performance, I want to share with you the many things we are grateful for this year and what’s ahead for your Santa Fe Desert Chorale, thanks to your support!
Our Winter Festival Offerings
Treasured local artists and top singers from around the country have gathered to the Land of Enchantment once again for one of Northern New Mexico’s favorite holiday traditions. In addition to our long-time collaborator, pianist Nathan Salazar, we are honored to welcome violinist Elizabeth Young to the stage this season. In addition to our mainstage concerts this December, we hope you will join us for our free community events, including Pop-up Carols and an interactive mini-concert for children and their families. Check out our calendar of events on page 5 of this book or at our website, desertchorale.org.
Our First Broadcast on New Mexico PBS
Gather with your loved ones this Christmas Eve for a special recorded performance of our 2023 Winter Festival program Candlelight Carols: A Glimpse of Snow and Evergreen. Tune in to New Mexico PBS on December 24, 2024 at 7pm MT, or stream it on the PBS app.

On the National Stage
In March 2025, your Santa Fe Desert Chorale will journey to Dallas to headline the prestigious American Choral Directors Association National Conference. We are pleased to share a shortened version of our acclaimed 2023 program The American Immigrant Experience with not just thousands of choral music leaders, but also with the greater Dallas community in a collaborative concert with Orpheus Chamber Singers. Led by longtime Desert Chorale artist JD Burnett, Orpheus Chamber Singers is a professional choir based in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Get your tickets and join us for this special one-night-only event at orpheuschambersingers.org
New 2025 Season On Sale Now
Our upcoming Summer Festival consists of three brand new programs. If you enjoyed last summer’s Songs of the Americas program, you won’t want to miss Cantos y Cuentos, songs and stories from today’s Latin American choral music scene, including a world premiere by Cuban-American composer Ernesto Herrera. The Chorale will collaborate with a chamber orchestra for Mass for the Endangered, including Sarah Kirkland Snider’s moving piece of the same name paired with Caroline Shaw’s To the Hands; both pieces speak to our deep relationships with nature and each other. The heart of our final summer program, Roots & Rivers, is a brand new, large-scale work by Nigerian-American composer Shawn E. Okpebholo in which he reimagines American folk songs and spirituals. Tickets are already on sale at desertchorale.org. And don’t forget to reserve your seat for next December’s Carols & Lullabies while you’re at it!
New Album to be Recorded Next Summer
Following the summer performances, we are set to create our latest recording to share with an international
audience. This new album will consist almost entirely of works commissioned especially for your Santa Fe Desert Chorale, including Shawn E. Okpebholo and Ernesto Herrera’s new works (2024), Northland by Kile Smith (2023), Caminante by Jocelyn Hagen (2022), and The Tipping Point by Reena Esmail (2021). We can’t wait to share these beautiful and powerful compositions with you and audiences worldwide.
Keep Our Voices Singing
Our work is only possible due to the generosity of an immense circle of supporters. As the year comes to a close, we are seeking your help to ensure the continued advancement of the music you love. To secure the vitality of your Santa Fe Desert Chorale, we kindly ask that you consider a donation to our annual fund today via the
QR code below or (505) 988-2282. You can also visit our website at desertchorale.org/support to make a gift and learn more about how your gift will support our deeply important mission: to excite, engage, and inspire diverse audiences with the beauty and power of great choral music.
From the bottom of my heart, I wish you and yours a wonderful holiday season filled with joy, peace, and glorious music. Thank you for being part of our Desert Chorale community—and enjoy the show!
With gratitude and warmest wishes,

ABOUT THE SANTA FE DESERT CHORALE
Founded in 1982 by Lawrence “Larry” Bandfield, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale is one of the longest-running professional music organizations in New Mexico, as well as one of the most distinguished American professional chamber choirs. “The Santa Fe Desert Chorale [is] a top-notch, 24-voice group… comprising the crème de la crème of professional choral singers from coast to coast” (Dallas Morning News). Performing in historical venues such as the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, the Desert Chorale has become a centerpiece of the cultural life of Santa Fe. Their annual Summer Festival is one of the nation’s largest choral events.
Artistic Director Joshua Habermann has led the Chorale since 2008 in repertoire spanning seven centuries, from early polyphony to contemporary works. Habermann’s versatile programming sets the ensemble apart as “a rara avis in the choral music world” (Santa Fe New Mexican).
The Chorale’s first commercial release, The Road Home, launched at No. 3 on the Billboard Classical Chart following a sold-out CD launch program in Santa Fe. The ensemble has traveled across the nation, performing in prominent conferences and cities such as Dallas, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
The Desert Chorale had the honor of performing at the American Choral Directors Association National Conference
in Salt Lake City in 2015, and will return to give the closing performance at the ACDA National Conference in Dallas in 2025.
Dedicated to advancing the composers of our time, the Chorale has commissioned over 30 new works, and several additional pieces have been given their world or American premieres by the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. The organization’s Commissioning Club selects and funds a new commission annually.
While nationally recognized, the Chorale prides itself on its strong relationships within the community of Northern New Mexico. Since 2016, the Chorale has hosted an annual community singing workshop, Santa Fe Sings!, bringing together music-lovers of all backgrounds to express themselves through song under the direction of Joshua Habermann. Through its Insights & Sounds program, the Chorale also presents free mini-concerts for children to introduce them to the beauty and power of great choral music, symposiums that gather experts for engaging dialogues through the lens of choral music, education workshops and masterclasses for local high school students, and more.

Prepare to experience the warmth, light, and beauty of the holiday season during the Desert Chorale’s 2024 Winter Festival, Carols & Lullabies. This year’s program, A Rose in Winter, reflects on the hope and wonder we experience this time of year, as miraculous as a flower blooming during the cold of December. Joined by Elizabeth Young on violin and Nathan Salazar on piano, our twenty-four professional vocal artists have returned to the Land of Enchantment from all across the nation for these concerts. The repertoire of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale ranges widely, from early polyphony through contemporary compositions, often reflecting the unique cultural crossroads that we call home. In recent years the Chorale has also explored Nordic music, and this winter’s program features several Norwegian composers whose interest in traditional tunes leads them to straddle the fertile boundary between folk and art music.
The evocative opening of Snilla Patea features a mournful melody in the fiddle, which is taken up by the voices who sing with improvised syllables in a way that is common among Norwegian folk singers. Eit Barn er Født i Bethlehem (A Child is Born in Bethlehem) is a 14th-century hymn text that is sung to a traditional Norwegian tune, as is Gjendines Bådnlåt (Gjendine’s Lullaby), which is undergirded by a gentle Cuban groove. The set ends with Gropen, another folk tune in which the voices imitate instruments by “trailing,” moving just behind the fiddle in a whirlwind of energy.
Bob Chilcott’s Rose in the Middle of Winter, which lends its title to our program, is a contemporary carol celebrating beauty that springs from a barren landscape. Chilcott combines evocative harmonies with a lilting rhythm in a carol that has become a new classic since it was written in 2010 to celebrate the 90th birthday of English conductor Sir David Willcocks. We follow one rose tune with another, as Shawn Kirchner contributes a charming contemporary take on the melody to Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming, mixing the ancient carol with a triple-time gospel accompaniment. Kirchner is a master arranger, gifted with an ability to write in an idiomatic, deeply satisfying American voice.
We return to Norway for our setting of O Magnum Mysterium. Over the course of approximately six minutes, the music unfolds gently with the choir weaving rich harmonies while the violin soars above. As with a Nordic winter landscape, there is a sense of stillness, with details slowly revealing themselves upon contemplation. A note changing here, another there, gives us an aural representation of light reflected through a window, changing moment by moment.
We follow with a set of seasonal carols, beginning with two short English melodies, followed by Michael Garrepy’s new arrangement of O Holy Night, which is symphonic in scope and a worthy challenge for the glorious voices of the Desert Chorale. From Europe, we return to the United States, with carols representing the best of American traditions: gospel (One Sweet Little Baby), the African-American spiritual
(Rise Up, Shepherd), and bluegrass (Brightest and Best) completing the set, again in an arrangement by Shawn Kirchner for choir and fiddle.
Our program closes with Elizabeth Poston’s Jesus Christ the Apple Tree and Silent Night, both well-loved melodies and long-time audience favorites at the Desert Chorale’s Winter Festival. May they bring you comfort and joy this holiday season.
— Joshua Habermann

Eit Barn er Født i Betlehem (sung in Norwegian)
Eit Barn er født i Betlehem No frydar seg Jerusalem. Halleluja.
Her ligg han i eit krubberom, men rår med evig herredom. Halleluja. Men okse der og asen stod og såg den Gud og Herre god. Halleluja.
Tre kongar kom frå Austerland, gull røykjels myrra gav dei han. Halleluja.
Ein gong vi vert vår Herre lik. Han leier oss til himmelrik. Halleluja.
Lov takk og pris i æva all.
Treeinig Gud det vera skal. Halleluja!
— Bernt Støylen (1858-1937)

A Child is Born in Bethlehem
A child is born in Bethlehem
And so rejoice, Jerusalem. Hallelujah.
Here he lies in a manger, but rules with eternal dominion. Hallelujah. There the ox and ass stood and saw the good, Lordly God. Hallelujah.
Three kings came from the East, and they gave him gold, frankincense and myrrh. Hallelujah.
One day we will meet our Lord, and he will lead us to heaven. Hallelujah.
Eternal praise, thanks and praise to the three-in-one God. Hallelujah!
Gjendine’s Lullaby
Gjendin, Gjendin, Gjendin, Gjendin
The child is laid in the cradle
Sometimes crying, something smiling. Dreaming child, sleep now in Jesus’ name, Jesus watch over the child.
My mother held me in her arms, dancing with me to and fro. Dancing just so, with the little ones. Dance, so shall the child dance.
Rose in the Middle of Winter
There’s a rose in the middle of winter, a rose which has no thorn, into the garden it comes like a child that is waiting to be born. And while he waits for the rose to bloom, the gardener sings and the clouds all dance to his tune.
There’s a bird in the middle of winter, a bird whose song is a prayer, into our dreams it comes, like a child who is almost here. And while he waits for the bird to sound the gardener sings and the stars all dance in a round.
There’s a child in the middle of winter, a child like a flower in the snow, into our days he comes, like a child who is with us now. And while he listens to the song of a rose, the gardener sings and the child is a dance in his soul.
— Charles Bennett (b. 1954)
Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming
Lo, how a rose e’er blooming, from tender stem has sprung!
Of Jesse’s lineage coming as saints of old have sung. It came, a flow’ret bright, amid the cold of winter, when half spent was the night.
Isaiah ‘twas foretold it, this Rose I have in mind. With Mary we behold it, the virgin mother kind. To show God’s love aright, she bore to us a savior, when half spent was the night.
This flow’r whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air, dispels in glorious splendor the darkness everywhere. True man, yet very God, from sin and death he saves us, and lightens every load.
— Traditional German, adapted by Shawn Kirchner
O Magnum Mysterium (sung in Latin)
O magnum mysterium et admirabile sacramentum Ut animalia viderent Dominum natum jacentem in praesepio.
O beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Jesum Christum. Alleluia.

All is calm, all is bright.
Celebrate the season with heirloom Christmas ornaments and nativities from the Southwest and Europe.
S usan’s Christmas Shop
O Great Mystery
O great mystery and wonderful sacrament That animals should see the newborn Lord lying in a manger.
O blessed Virgin, who was worthy to bear Christ the Lord. Alleluia.
Nativity by Sabinita Lopez Ortiz
Sussex Carol
On Christmas Night all Christians sing
To hear the news the angels bring, News of great joy, news of great mirth, News of our merciful King’s birth.
Then why should men on earth be so sad, Since our Redeemer made us glad? When from our sin he set us free, All for to gain our liberty?
When sin departs before his grace, Then life and health come in its place; Angels and men with joy may sing All for to see the newborn King.
All out of darkness we have light, Which made the angels sing this night: Glory to God and peace to men Now and forevermore. Amen.
— Traditional English
What Child is This?
What child is this, who laid to rest
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet While shepherds watch are keeping.
This, this is the Christ the King Whom shepherds guard and angels sing. Haste, haste to bring Him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary.
Why lies He in such mean estate Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear, for sinners here The silent Word is pleading.
This, this is the Christ the King…
So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh Come peasant, king, to own Him. The King of Kings salvation brings, Let loving arms enthrone Him.
This, this is the Christ the King…
— William Chatterton Dix (1837-1898)

O Holy Night
O holy night, the stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining ‘Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices, O night divine, o night when Christ was born.
Led by the light of faith serenely beaming, With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand. So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, Here come the wise men from Orient land.
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger, In all our trials born to be our friend. He knows our need, our weakness is no stranger, Behold your King, before Him lowly bend.
— Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure (1808-1877)
One Sweet Little Baby
O Mary shining glory! The Lord smiles upon you. What a blessing is this little baby that you brought to our world,
All for the love of one sweet little baby. All for the love of one sweet baby child. All for the love of one sweet little baby, we have come so far.
A good old man named Simeon said, “I’m never gonna rest till I see that Messiah child, and hold him to my breast.”
All for the love of one sweet little baby…
Many gonna speak against you child, They’ll crucify all that’s true.
And your mother Mary she will bear a pain That will pierce her heart through.
All for the love of one sweet little baby…
O Jerusalem your children are so tired of war. My Lord, it’s time to walk with your children once more. All for the love of one sweet little baby…
— Glenn McClure and Wes Kinneson

Rise Up, Shepherd
There’s a star in the east on Christmas morn, Rise up, shepherd, and follow. It will lead to the place where the Savior’s born, Rise up, shepherd, and follow.
Leave your sheep and leave your lambs, Rise up, shepherd, and follow. Leave your ewes and leave your rams, Rise up, shepherd, and follow.
If you take good heed to the angel’s words; Rise up, shepherd, and follow; You’ll forget your flocks, you’ll forget your herds; Rise up, shepherd, and follow.
— Traditional American spiritual
Brightest and Best
Hail the bless’d morn, see the Great Mediator Down from the regions of glory descend. Shepherds go worship the babe in the manger, Lo, for his guard the bright angels attend.
Brightest and best of the stars of the morning, Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid. Star in the East, the horizon adorning, Guide us where our infant Redeemer is laid.
Cold on his cradle the dewdrops are shining, Low lies his bed with the beasts of the stall. Angels adore him in slumber reclining, Maker and Monarch and Savior of all.
Brightest and best of the stars of the morning…
Shall we not yield him in costly devotion Odors of Edom and offerings divine? Gems of the mountains and pearls of the ocean, Myrrh from the forest or gold from the mine?
Brightest and best of the stars of the morning…
— Reginald Heber (1783-1826)
Jesus Christ the Apple Tree
The tree of life my soul hath seen, Laden with fruit and always green; The trees of nature fruitless be, Compared with Christ the apple tree.
His beauty doth all things excel, By faith I know but ne’er can tell The glory which I now can see, In Jesus Christ the apple tree.
For happiness I long have sought, And pleasure dearly I have bought; I missed of all but now I see ‘Tis found in Christ the apple tree.
I’m weary with my former toil, Here I will sit and rest awhile, Under the shadow I will be, Of Jesus Christ the apple tree.
This fruit doth make my soul to thrive, It keeps my dying faith alive; Which makes my soul in haste to be With Jesus Christ the apple tree.
— Rev. Richard Hutchins (1698-1781)
Silent Night
Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright ‘Round yon virgin Mother and Child. Holy infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace.
Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.
Silent night, holy night, wond’rous star lend thy light. With the angels let us sing “Alleluia” to our King. Christ the Savior is born.
— Joseph Mohr (1792-1848)

Encore SOCIETY

Encore is French for “Again;” a request for repetition or reappearance made by an audience; a second achievement that surpasses the first.
The Santa Fe Desert Chorale cordially invites you to join the Encore Society. Formerly known as the Legacy Circle, the Encore Society recognizes and honors all those who support us through planned giving and/or estate gifts.
Planned giving, or legacy giving, refers to the tools and techniques by which you make a charitable gift during or after your lifetime to take full advantage of current tax laws and make a substantial donation to the Desert Chorale.
There are many ways you can make a planned gift to the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. Whether you give during your lifetime or from your estate, you will receive our deep appreciation and this simple word of praise again and again:

MERCHANDISE

We look forward to your joining our Encore Society. To learn more or to inform us of your plans, please call (505) 988-2282 or desertchorale.org/encore
Pick up a keepsake after the performance, or shop online at desertchorale.org/shop

About the Commissioning Club
Each year, members of the Commissioning Club meet under the guidance of Artistic Director Joshua Habermann to choose an emerging composer who will write a work to be premiered by the Desert Chorale during an upcoming summer season. This important work helps to expand the choral canon for choruses around the world and ensures the legacy of the Desert Chorale as one of the country’s leading chamber choirs. The Club builds on the Desert Chorale’s rich history of over 30 commissioned choral works!
Join the Santa Fe Desert Chorale Commissioning Club and become part of choral music history! The tax-deductible $1,000 club membership fee goes directly to help bring new music to life. No musical education required! Club members are invited to attend the dress rehearsal of the new work, enjoy a private dinner with the composer and receive an archival recording of the commissioned work.
For more information and to join the Commissioning Club, please email commissioningclub@desertchorale.org
