Master of Liberal Arts program, you will explore 3000 years of Western thought: from the ancient philosophical, scientific, and historical texts of Greece and Rome, to the rise of both Christianity and the Enlightenment, to the development of democracy and the American experiment. But more importantly, you will work closely and in dialogue with faculty and peers to discover the most undeniable thing of all: our shared humanity.
The Eastern Classics What do the most searching, profound, and
beautiful texts from three of the most significant civilizations in Asia tell us about what it means to be human? In our Master of Eastern Classics program, you will investigate the great works that are central to the philosophical, literary, and religious traditions of China, India, and Japan. Like the Western classics, these works raise timeless questions which are fundamental to understanding the past but through a whole new lens—which you will discover in close community with others.

While many of the venues and the music we sing represent specific religious or cultural traditions, we celebrate the diversity of faith, thought, artistry, and human experiences represented by the music performed in these spaces. Emma Marzen Season’s greetings, and welcome to our 2023 Winter Festival, Candlelight Carols: A Glimpse of Snow and Evergreen. I am sorry not to be with you today due to my maternity leave, but am pleased to share that the Chorale’s superb Operations Director Amanda Sidebottom will be serving as Acting Executive Director through this interim period. I look forward to seeing you again in person in the new year. As you anxiously await the start of the concert, I wanted to share your impact on the Desert Chorale, and give you a preview of our forthcoming 2024 Season. This year alone, your support enabled us to: Relaunch Hearts In Harmony at the Interfaith Community Shelter Hearts in Harmony is a weekly, hour-long program for Shelter guests, in which participants learn and create music with Desert Chorale artists. We believe this program improves the wellbeing of participants and our whole community, and in the transformations that happen through the healing experience of singing together. Expand our Insights & Sounds audience enrichment program to include Free Family Concerts These fun, educational shows are open to families with children from all across Santa Fe. ABOUT THE SANTA FE DESERT CHORALE

Founded in 1982 by Lawrence “Larry” Bandfield, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale is one of the longest-running professional music organizations in New Mexico, as well as one of the most distinguished American professional chamber choirs. “The Santa Fe Desert Chorale [is] a top-notch, 24-voice group… comprising the crème de la crème of professional choral singers from coast to coast” (Dallas Morning News). Performing in historical venues such as the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, the Desert Chorale has become a centerpiece of the cultural life of Santa Fe. Their annual Summer Festival is one of the nation’s largest choral events.

Artistic Director Joshua Habermann, now in his 15th season, leads the Chorale in repertoire spanning seven centuries, from early polyphony to contemporary works. Habermann’s versatile programming sets the ensemble apart as “a rara avis in the choral music world” (Santa Fe New Mexican).
While nationally recognized, the Chorale prides itself on its strong relationships within the community of Northern New Mexico. Since 2016, the Chorale has hosted an annual community singing workshop, Santa Fe Sings!, bringing together music-lovers of all backgrounds to express themselves through song under the direction of Joshua Habermann. Through its Insights & Sounds program, the Chorale also presents free mini-concerts for children to introduce them to the beauty and power of great choral music, symposiums that gather experts from around the community for engaging dialogues through the lens of choral music, education workshops and masterclasses for local high school students, and more.
The Chorale’s first commercial release, The Road Home, launched at No. 3 on the Billboard Classical Chart following a sold-out CD launch program in Santa Fe. The ensemble has traveled across the nation, performing in prominent conferences and cities such as Dallas, Chicago, and Los Angeles. In 2021, the Chorale began offering access to full video recordings through their streaming
Throughout its history, the Chorale has maintained a commitment to give voice to music from Hispanic and Native American communities. Dedicated to advancing the composers of our time, the Chorale has also commissioned over 30 new works. Several additional works have been given their world or American premieres by the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. The organization’s Commissioning Club selects and funds a new commission annually.

PROGRAM NOTES
The music of Tomás Luis de Victoria represents the highest expression of Spanish sacred music. Victoria’s music was revered not only in Europe but also in the Americas, where it was heard even in the far reaches of the Spanish Empire. Our program begins with the Alma Redemptoris Mater chant that forms the basis for his eight-voice motet that follows. As always, Victoria is a master of invention, with antiphonal effects that place the two choirs in conversation, passing musical ideas back and forth until they join forces, swelling to a glorious final cadence. Alan Ridout was a prolific composer who wrote much of his vocal music for the choir of Canterbury Cathedral. His setting of Herbert Read’s poem Until I Wander’d is a charming choral miniature, with appropriately spindly lines for “spidery rafters” and a radiant G Major ending for the reflection of snow on the desert landscape. That theme of light is taken up again in Jan Richardson’s poem Where the Light Begins, set by Susan LaBarr, who writes, “When we love, care for and accept all of our neighbors—despite our differences—we find that the light that the dark world so desperately needs begins in us.” Eric Whitacre’s take on the E.E. Cummings’s poem little tree completes the set. With equal parts tenderness and whimsy, we tell a familiar story in a new way, from the perspective of the tree taken from its home.
own haunting melody, heard here in an arrangement by John Rutter. American arrangers Dan Forrest, Robert Shaw and Alice Parker give us our final two carols: The First Noel and Masters in this Hall, both of which feature rousing cries of “Nowell, Nowell!” Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas was popularized by Judy Garland, who sang it in 1944 in the MGM musical Meet Me in St. Louis. It has since been covered by artists ranging from Frank Sinatra to John Legend. Sweet Little Jesus Boy is a Christmas spiritual and also an American classic, published in 1934 and arranged here by Stacy Gibbs for Desert Chorale artist Marques Jerrell Ruff. Our program closes with Elizabeth Poston’s Jesus Christ the Apple Tree and Shawn Kirchner’s arrangement of Silent Night, both long-time audience favorites at the Desert Chorale’s Winter Festival. Lovers of choral music will know that in the two decades since its composition, Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium has attained an almost mythical status as a short-form masterwork. Over the course of approximately seven minutes, the music unfolds gently, moving with an inexorable strength that is all the more powerful for all it holds in reserve. Lauridsen writes: “I wanted this piece to resonate immediately and deeply into the core of the listener, to illumine through sound.” We follow with two sets of carols. First, three Scandinavian carols, the first and last of which are lighthearted dance tunes well suited to brighten the long Nordic night. Jul, Jul, Strålande Jul offers a moment of repose as it depicts the snowy stillness of the Swedish forest. The second set of carols begins with I Wonder as I Wander, a tune of Appalachian origin composed by American folklorist John Jacob Niles. In 1933 Niles met a young girl on the outskirts of Murphy, North Carolina who sang him a short fragment of what Niles would ultimately fashion into his

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Joshua Habermann Joshua Habermann is in his fifteenth season as Artistic Director of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. Since joining the ensemble he has broadened its repertoire to include not only a cappella literature but also choral-orchestral masterworks and unique concert experiences that combine music, images, poetry and the spoken word. Habermann has led honor choirs and choral festivals in North and Latin America, Europe and Asia. As a singer (tenor) he has performed with the Oregon Bach Festival Chorus (Eugene, Oregon), and Conspirare (Austin, Texas). Recording credits include three projects with Conspirare: Through the Green Fuse, Requiem, a Grammy nominee for best choral recording in 2006, and Threshold of Night, a Grammy nominee for best choral recording and best classical album in 2009. From 2011-2022, Joshua Habermann served as director of the Dallas Symphony Chorus, the official vocal ensemble of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, where he prepared the 200-voice chorus for classical series concerts. Highlights with the DSO include performances of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, Verdi’s Requiem, Berlioz’s Te Deum, and Britten’s War Requiem, which was performed for the ACDA national convention in 2013. Recent international collaborations include performances of Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, and Duruflé’s Requiem with the Swedish Radio Orchestra, as well as tour performances in Spain, France, Sweden, Estonia and Finland.
invitations included the Waging Peace Festival in Eugene, Oregon, multiple appearances at the California Music Educators Convention, and an appearance at the American Choral Directors Association regional convention in 2008. From 2008-2011 Habermann was Director of Choral Studies at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, where he led the graduate program in conducting, and directed the Frost Chorale. Notable projects in Miami included an appearance at the Florida ACDA convention and collaborations with the New World Symphony and conductor Michael Tilson Thomas in music of Ives, Schubert and Beethoven. During this same period Habermann led the Masterchorale of South Florida in performances of masterworks such as Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Haydn’s Creation, and Mozart’s Requiem. A native of California, Joshua Habermann is a graduate of Georgetown University and the University of Texas at Austin, where he completed doctoral studies in conducting with Craig Hella Johnson. He lives in Honolulu with his wife Joanna, daughter Kira, and son Kai.

About the Commissioning Club Each year, members of the Commissioning Club meet under the guidance of Artistic Director Joshua Haberman to choose an emerging composer who will write a work to be premiered by the Desert Chorale during an upcoming summer season. This important work helps to expand the choral canon for choruses around the world and ensures the legacy of the Desert Chorale as one of the country’s leading chamber choirs. The Club builds on the Desert Chorale’s rich history of 31 works commissioned by 28 composers! Join the Santa Fe Desert Chorale Commissioning Club and become part of choral music history! A $1,000 contribution per person toward the composer’s commissioning fee is all that is required to help bring a new piece of music to life.
