WINTER FESTIVAL 3
Joshua Habermann | Artistic Director
40th ANNIVERSARY
Photo: Tira Howard Photography
Season’s greetings, and welcome to our 2022 Winter Festival, A Ceremony of Carols. As you anxiously await the start of the concert, I wanted to share the impact of your support on the Desert Chorale, and give you a preview of our forthcoming 2023 Summer and Winter Festival programs.
Forty years ago, Lawrence “Larry” Bandfield realized his groundbreaking vision when he founded one of the first fully professional choirs in the nation right here in New Mexico: your Santa Fe Desert Chorale. It is thanks to your continued love and dedication that we have been able to continue carrying forward Larry’s legacy of transcendent choral music in the Land of Enchantment for these past four decades.
This year alone, your support enabled us to:
Enhance Your Patron Experience
You may have noticed that we launched our new website (desertchorale.org) on June 30th. However, this is not our only recent improvement. Our organization has invested in significant technological upgrades to enhance your ticketbuying and gift-making experiences while enabling our staff to focus more on our artistic and community engagement programming. Additionally, we have added new employees to our team in recent months which has further increased our ability to reach and expand our organizational goals.
Expand Our Community Initiatives
Our Insights & Sounds program returned in a new musical symposium format on July 26th at the historic Acequia Madre House, featuring experts and organizations from Santa Fe and beyond. We also shared our Pre-Concert Lecture Series for free online, along with newly included Q&A sessions with each of our expert lecturers. This December, we are thrilled to share for the first time a special winter season talk given by Dr. Maxine Thévenot, which will be available through our website from December 10th-January 15th. Visit desertchorale.org/tickets to learn more and register today.
Welcome!
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Emma Marzen
Returning this winter are the free and wonderfully popular Outdoor Pop-up Carols series across Santa Fe on December 13th and 17th, along with a new Choral Workshop at the New Mexico School for the Arts on December 14th, sponsored in-part by New Mexico Bank & Trust. We are grateful to engage deeply with our community during this holiday season.
Lastly, we are thrilled to announce that our beloved choral workshop Santa Fe Sings! will return in the spring of 2023. Further information will be available soon; be the first to know by signing up for our email list
Celebrate Our Ruby Anniversary
For the first time in recent history, and in celebration of our 40th Anniversary, the full 24-voice Chorale presented an exclusive, intimate concert for our most dedicated supporters during our Ruby Celebration Gala at the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado. No fundraising requests were made at this event—we simply enjoyed wonderful food, wine, cocktails, and a fabulous performance by the entire Desert Chorale. We were also thrilled to honor our 2022 Angel Award recipients, Stephen and Jane Hochberg (see photo next page), and Civic Leadership Award recipient, Patricia Salazar Ives of Cuddy & McCarthy, LLP for their many contributions to the Chorale.
Be sure to save the date: next year’s event will take place on Thursday, July 20, 2023. We hope you will join us!
Support Our Future
To ensure the Chorale’s next 40 years, we have launched the Encore Society, a new planned giving recognition program. Our recently-created Endowment Fund, accepting both current and planned gifts, will help guarantee the health and stability of the music you love for years to come. We hope you will consider including the Chorale in your plans and join the Encore Society today (desertchorale.org/planned-giving).
4 SANTA FE DESERT CHORALE
Forge Ahead
As we produced this year’s programming, we continued to prepare for the future. The Board of Directors and Executive Leadership finalized a new strategic plan on May 26, 2022, expanding the Chorale’s planning horizon to 2027. The plan centers on Artistic Excellence, Sustainability, Diversity, and Collegiality to not only continue and further the work of the past 40 years, but also to ensure our future vitality. We are delighted to enact our goals with a stronger foundation than ever before, and we look forward to expanding upon the artistic vision Larry Bandfield set into motion.
2023 Concert Programming
Our upcoming summer festival will consist of three unique concert programs: The Tudors and the Medici, highlighting the artistic impact of these two dynastic families; The American Immigrant Experience, exploring how their contributions have influenced and defined our nation’s music (including our 2023 commissioned work by Grammy-nominated composer Kile Smith); and The Ecstasies Above, featuring a double string quartet and organ performing two virtuosic works by George Frideric Handel and Tarik O’Regan. A Glimpse of Snow and Evergreen, our winter festival, will honor the beauty of New Mexico’s mountain winter landscape and the traditions we keep at that special time of the year.
Tickets for our 2023 season go on sale December 15, 2022 at desertchorale.org/tickets or by calling (505) 988-2282, ext. 0. If you are interested in 2023 festival and artist sponsorships, please contact Nichole Carnevale by nichole@desertchorale.org.
A Community of Giving
These past 40 years have only been possible due to the generosity of an immense circle of supporters. We are here and thriving thanks to the multitude of artists, Board members, Ambassadors, employees, ticket buyers, community partners, donors, grantors, and all others who
have shared in the beauty and power of great choral music with us since 1982. We additionally offer thanks to those who have offered their homes to our artists, hosted events, and all who support us in-kind. We are deeply grateful to all of our incredible sponsors and Desert Chorale Circle members whom you will see listed throughout this book for their dedication to the Chorale. They empower us to create the music you love year after year.
As our 40th anniversary comes to a close, we are seeking your help to ensure the continued advancement of our efforts. Ticket sales alone are not enough to fund the work of the Desert Chorale. It is your continued, steadfast support and generosity which allows us to excite, engage, and inspire diverse audiences with the beauty and power of great choral music. To secure the vitality of your Santa Fe Desert Chorale, we kindly ask that you consider a donation to our annual fund today. A contribution envelope is included in the centerfold of this program for your convenience. Please visit our website at desertchorale.org/support to explore our donor benefits, ways to give, and learn more about additional ways you can support the work of the Chorale.
On behalf of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale Board of Directors, artists, and staff, thank you for supporting one of the nation’s finest chamber choirs in the Land of Enchantment throughout these forty years. We wish you peace and joy this winter season, and hope you enjoy the performance.
With gratitude and warmest wishes, Emma Marzen | Executive Director
P.S. To make a year-end gift online, please visit desertchorale.org/donate by December 31st. Thank you.

ABOUT THE SANTA FE DESERT CHORALE
Founded in 1982 by Lawrence “Larry” Bandfield, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale is one of the longest-running professional music organizations in New Mexico, as well as one of the most distinguished. In his 2020 review of the Strength and Refuge: A Joyous Exploration of the Psalms program at Highland Park United Methodist Church (Tower Arts Series), Scott Cantrell of the Dallas Morning News remarked that, “The Santa Fe Desert Chorale [is] a topnotch, 24-voice group… comprising the crème de la crème of professional choral singers from coast to coast. The singing throughout was boldly projected, finely finished and expressed and, where necessary, quite nimble.”
Artistic Director Joshua Habermann, now in his fourteenth season, leads the Desert Chorale in repertoire spanning seven centuries, from early polyphony to contemporary works. The composition of the Chorale is truly national in scope and the ensemble is recognized as one of the finest American chamber choirs. Now in its 40th year, the
HISTORIC MILESTONES
Desert Chorale Summer Festival season is a centerpiece of the cultural life of Santa Fe, and among the nation’s most significant choral events.
The Desert Chorale’s first commercial release, The Road Home, launched at No. 3 on the Billboard Classical Chart following a sold-out CD launch program in Santa Fe. In addition to their annual winter and summer seasons in New Mexico, the Chorale has presented several concert programs in Dallas and performed in regional ACDA conferences in Los Angeles and Chicago. Another highlight was an invitational appearance at the 2015 American Choral Directors Association National Conference, which was later broadcast by Minnesota Public Radio. In 2021, the Chorale began offering full video recordings through their streaming service, Desert Chorale TV, sharing the beauty and power of choral music to a wider audience across the country and around the world.

Throughout its history, the Desert Chorale has maintained a commitment to give voice to music from Hispanic and Native American communities. Dedicated to advancing the composers of our time, the Chorale has commissioned 29 works by 26 composers; three-quarters of the composers commissioned have been American. In addition, another seven works have been given their world or American premieres by the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. The Desert Chorale’s Commissioning Club selects and funds a new commission annually.
The ensemble performs at historical sites in Santa Fe such as the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi and Cristo Rey Catholic Church, as well as other venues throughout the Southwest and across the nation.
The Desert Chorale prides itself on its strong relationships within the community of Northern New Mexico, and enjoys
collaborations with the Center for Contemporary Arts, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe Jewish Film Festival, Museum of International Folk Art, Acequia Madre House, International Folk Art Market, The Santa Fe Watershed Association, Tomorrow’s Women and galleries throughout Santa Fe, among others. Several of these organizations and other community partners came together in the summer of 2022 for the Chorale’s inaugural Insights & Sounds Symposium, an event filled with interdisciplinary dialogue through the lens of choral music.
Through its community engagement programming, the Desert Chorale partners with other musical, artistic, social service, and educational organizations in Santa Fe and beyond. This December the Desert Chorale hosted its first choral workshop for students at the New Mexico School for the Arts, and will continue to expand this work in the future.

In the spring of 1942, Benjamin Britten, together with his partner Peter Pears, booked passage to return from the United States to England. The journey was difficult and dangerous due to the presence of German U-Boats patrolling the Atlantic. The ship made a stop in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where Britten purchased a copy of The English Galaxy of Shorter Poems, which seems to have been the source of the inspiration to set a group of Christmas poems to music during the ocean crossing. Britten wrote to a friend with characteristic humor: “one had to alleviate the boredom!” The resulting collection of seven carols was later expanded to a ten-movement work, including an interlude for solo harp.
The resulting work, A Ceremony of Carols, is one of the most iconic and beloved pieces in the choral canon. The piece is deceptively challenging, requiring not only flexible and sensitive singers, but also a virtuoso harpist capable of bringing out the full potential of the instrument. The Desert Chorale is fortunate to be joined in these performances by Emily Levin, harpist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Ceremony was written originally for treble voices, and then later adapted by Julius Harrison for mixed choirs. These performances feature a hybrid of the original high-voice version with those movements where Harrison’s adaptation works especially well for the inclusion of tenors and basses.
After the Britten, we hear another British composer, Peter Phillips, whose double choir setting of Ecce Vicit Leo is a perfect showpiece for the agility and power of the Desert Chorale. From there we hear two contemporary American pieces for harp and choir: Steven Heitzeg’s tender setting of e.e. Cummings poem little tree, and the mellifluous Alleluia, Dies Sanctificatus by William Hawley.
The inclusion of an O Magnum Mysterium setting is a long-standing Desert Chorale tradition. This year we hear American composer Wayne Oquin, a Juilliard School faculty member whose music has been performed by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. Oquin’s setting is notable for its tender opening and delightful changes of harmony, reflecting the mystery and wonder of the Christmas story.
A CEREMONY OF CAROLS PROGRAM NOTES
Spain boasts a rich repertoire of carols, many of which made their way to the Americas via the Spanish empire. Next we hear three settings from Conrad Susa’s Carols and Lullabies: Christmas in the Southwest, sung in both Spanish and Catalan, the language spoken in the Northeast of the Iberian Peninsula.
Our program closes with three traditional carols and a newly composed carol-anthem by the British composer Herbert Howells, who, as a contemporary of Benjamin Britten, brings us back to where we began. Each of these well-loved melodies has a rich history and strong association with the traditions associated with these longest nights of the year. May they bring you comfort and joy in this holiday season.

That Yongë Childe
That Yongë Child when it gan weep with song she lulled him asleep: That was so sweet a melody it passèd alle minstrelsy*.

Balulalow
O my dear heart, young Jesu sweet, prepare thy cradle in my sp’rit, And I shall rock thee to my heart, and never more from thee depart. But I shall praise thee evermore with songes sweet unto thy gloir; The knees of my heart shall I bow, And sing that right Balulalow.

As Dew in Aprille
I sing of a maiden That is makèles*: King of all kings To her son she ches*.
He came al so stille There his moder was, As dew in Aprille That falleth on the grass.
He came al so stille to his moder’s bour As dew in Aprille that falleth on the flour.
This Little Babe
He came al so stille There his moder lay, As dew in Aprille That falleth on the spray.
Moder and mayden was never none but she; Well may such a lady Goddes moder be. *makèles=matchless; ches=chose
This little Babe so few days old, is come to rifle Satan’s fold; All hell doth at his presence quake, though he himself for cold do shake; For in this weak unarmed wise the gates of hell he will surprise.
With tears he fights and wins the field, His naked breast stands for a shield; His battering shot are babish cries, His arrows looks of weeping eyes, His martial ensigns Cold and Need, and feeble Flesh his warrior’s steed.
His camp is pitched in a stall, His bulwark but a broken wall; The crib his trench, haystalks his stakes; of shepherds he his muster makes; And thus, as sure his foe to wound, the angels’ trumps alarum sound.
My soul, with Christ join thou in fight; stick to the tents that he hath pight. Within his crib is surest ward; this little Babe will be thy guard. If thou wilt foil thy foes with joy, then flit not from this heavenly Boy.

Behold, a silly tender babe, in freezing winter night, In homely manger trembling lies. Alas, a piteous sight!
The inns are full; no man will yield this little pilgrim bed But forced he is with silly beasts in crib to shroud his head.
This stable is a Prince’s court, this crib his chair of State; The beasts are parcel of his pomp, the wooden dish his plate. The persons in that poor attire His royal liveries wear; The Prince himself is come from heaven; this pomp is prized there. With joy approach, O Christian wight, do homage to thy King, And highly praise his humble pomp, which he from Heaven doth bring.

little tree
little tree little silent Christmas tree you are so little you are more like a flower who found you in the green forest and were you very sorry to come away? see i will comfort you because you smell so sweetly i will kiss your cool bark and hug you safe and tight just as your mother would, only don’t be afraid look the spangles that sleep all the year in a dark box dreaming of being taken out and allowed to shine, the balls the chains red and gold the fluffy threads, put up your little arms and I’ll give them all to you to hold every finger shall have its ring and there won’t be a single place dark or unhappy then when you’re quite dressed you’ll stand in the window for everyone to see and how they’ll stare! oh, but you’ll be very proud and my little sister and i will take hands and looking up at our beautiful tree we’ll dance and sing “Noel Noel!”
— e.e. cummings (1894-1962)
Alleluia, Dies Sanctificatus (sung in Latin)
Alleluia, alleluia, dies sanctificatus illuxit nobis. Venite gentes et adorate Dominum: Quia hodie descendit lux magna super terram. Alleluia.
O Magnum Mysterium (sung in Latin)
O magnum mysterium et admirabile sacramentum
Ut animalia viderent Dominum natum jacentem in praesepio
O beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Jesum Christum. Alleluia.
O Mi Belén (sung in Spanish)
¡Oh, mi Belén!
Llegó tu hora bien amada, ¡oh, mi Belén!
La luz que irradias sin cesar, es como un faro que nos guía en nuestra ruta, noche y día.
Alleluia, alleluia, a holy day has dawned for us. Come people, and worship the Lord: For today a great light has descended to Earth. Alleluia.
O great mystery and wonderful sacrament That animals should see the newborn Lord lying in a manger
O blessed Virgin, who was worthy to bear Christ the Lord. Alleluia.
O Bethlehem!
Your long-awaited hour is come, O Bethlehem!
The light from your city shines without stopping, burning like a beacon guiding us on our way, in darkness and daylight.

El Desembre Congelat (sung in Catalan)
Away in a Manger
Away in a manger, no crib for his bed The little Lord Jesus lay down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky And stay by my side until morning is nigh.
Be near me Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay Close by me forever, and love me I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care And fit us for heaven to live with thee there.
Frozen December retreats, confounded. April wears a flower crown, all the world admiring, From a garden filled with love springs a divine flower From a beautiful, fertile rose.
God the Father made the dim night Darkening all the world, a heavy and fearful sight. But at darkest midnight shines the sun Of a beautiful dawn, enchanting the skies.
The month of May has flowered, not yet fully A tidy and white lily of rare fragrance That is felt throughout the world, from the rising to the setting sun In sweet aroma and good fortune.
Walking towards Bethlehem, Mary, with her loving husband; Accompanied by an all-powerful God. When they arrived in Bethlehem they were searching for a haven No one would house them, for they were so poor. The songbirds of the forest, seeing the couple pass, Serenaded them with their melodies, with their harmonious chirping. Happiness, happiness, happiness, happiness, happiness and joy!
For the Virgin is making her way with her husband toward Bethlehem.

A Spotless Rose
A spotless Rose is blowing Sprung from a tender root, Of ancient seers’ foreshowing, Of Jesse’s promised fruit; Its fairest bud unfolds to light Amid the cold, cold winter And in the dark midnight.
The Rose which I am singing, Whereof Isaiah said, Is from its sweet root springing In Mary, purest Maid; For through our God’s great love and might The blessed babe she bare us In a cold, cold winter’s night.
O Holy Night
O holy night, the stars are brightly shining, It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices! O night divine, o night when Christ was born; O night divine, o holy night, o night divine.
Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother, And in His name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us praise His holy name. Christ is the Lord, o praise His name forever, His power and glory evermore proclaim!
— Placide Cappeau (1808-1877) trans. John S. Dwight
Angels We Have Heard on High
Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o’er the plains And the mountains in reply echo back their joyous strains.
Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Shepherds why this jubilee? Why your joyous songs prolong? Say what may the tidings be which inspire your heavenly song. Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Come to Bethlehem and see him whose birth the angels sing Come adore on bended on knee Christ the Lord the newborn King.
Gloria in excelsis Deo!

Joshua Habermann is in his fourteenth season as Artistic Director of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. Since joining the ensemble he has broadened its repertoire to include not only a cappella literature but also choral-orchestral masterworks and unique concert experiences that combine music, images, poetry and the spoken word. In 2015 the Desert Chorale was a featured performer at the national convention of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) in Dancing the Mystery, a program featuring the poetry of Sufi masters Rumi and Hafiz.
Habermann has led honor choirs and choral festivals in North and Latin America, Europe and Asia. As a singer (tenor) he has performed with the Oregon Bach Festival Chorus (Eugene, Oregon), and Conspirare (Austin, Texas). Recording credits include three projects with Conspirare: Through the Green Fuse, Requiem, a Grammy nominee for best choral recording in 2006, and Threshold of Night, a Grammy nominee for best choral recording and best classical album in 2009.
From 2011-2022, Joshua Habermann served as director of the Dallas Symphony Chorus, the official vocal ensemble of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, where he prepared the 200-voice chorus for classical series concerts. Highlights with the DSO include performances of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, Verdi’s Requiem, Berlioz’s Te Deum, and Britten’s War Requiem, which was performed for the ACDA national convention in 2013. Recent international collaborations include performances of Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, and Duruflé’s Requiem with the Swedish Radio Orchestra, as well as tour performances in Spain, France, Sweden, Estonia and Finland.
From 1996-2008 Habermann was Assistant Conductor of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, and Professor of Music at San Francisco State University, where under his direction the SFSU Chamber Singers received international

engagements in Havana, Cuba, and undertook concert tours in Germany, the Czech Republic, and China. National invitations include the Waging Peace Festival in Eugene, Oregon, multiple appearances at the California Music Educators Convention, and an appearance at the American Choral Directors Association regional convention in 2008.
From 2008-2011 Habermann was Director of Choral Studies at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, where he led the graduate program in conducting, and directed the Frost Chorale. Notable projects in Miami included an appearance at the Florida ACDA convention and collaborations with the New World Symphony and conductor Michael Tilson Thomas in music of Ives, Schubert and Beethoven. During this same period Habermann led the Masterchorale of South Florida in performances of masterworks such as Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Haydn’s Creation, and Mozart’s Requiem.
A native of California, Joshua Habermann is a graduate of Georgetown University and the University of Texas at Austin, where he completed doctoral studies in conducting with Craig Hella Johnson. He lives in Honolulu with his wife Joanna, daughter Kira, and son Kai.

In Memory of Don L. Roberts August 13, 1938 - March 30, 2022
The Santa Fe Desert Chorale mourns the passing of our dear friend and Director Emeriti Don L. Roberts. Don, alongside his beloved wife Sally, was a champion for the Chorale, introducing new friends to the choral music he loved every year—many of whom have since become donors and Board members themselves. Don attended every rehearsal each season, enjoying the process for all of our programs from start to finish.
In 2011, Sally commissioned their friend and composer Frank Ferko to create a new choral work in celebration of the 75th birthday of Don Roberts, resulting in the July 19, 2016 Santa Fe Desert Chorale world premiere of the Tewa-text based Song of the Sky Loom. Don’s love of choral music and the music of the American Southwest Pueblo peoples had a significant impact on the Desert Chorale and the choral canon at-large. His generosity and friendship will always be remembered.
In Loving Memory, The Artists, Staff, and Board of Directors of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale
We also remember and will always have in our hearts our dear friends: Hugh Balaam, Ambassador and supporter Joe Jordan Berenis, Interfaith Community Shelter Executive Director

COMMISSIONING CLUB
Support the composers of our time by joining SFDC’s Commissioning Club today!
The Commissioning Club works to identify and advance emerging composers, to expand the choral canon for choruses around the world, and to ensure the legacy of the Desert Chorale as one of the country’s leading chamber choirs. The Club builds on the Desert Chorale’s rich tradition: in its 40 years, the Chorale has commissioned 29 works by 26 composers. A composer for the 2025 programming season will be chosen after reviewing scores and listening to selections suggested by Artistic Director Joshua Habermann.

A $1,000 contribution per person toward the composer’s commissioning fee is all that is required to join. The result is an enduring addition to the repertoire. Commissioning Club members are invited to attend the dress rehearsal of the new work, enjoy a private evening with the composer, and take home an archival recording of the commissioned work – for your ears only.

AMBASSADORS
Ambassadors are individuals who have an appreciation of the beauty and power of great choral music. They promote and support the mission of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale and foster a sense of community by introducing friends and neighbors to the Chorale. Santa Fe Desert Chorale programming would not be possible without the support of many individuals in the community who give generously of their time and talent. If you would like to join the Ambassadors, please contact Lydia Milá Garmaier by emailing lydia@desertchorale.org. Thank you.
