PERFORMANCE VENUES & INFORMATION The Desert Chorale has the privilege of performing in some of the most beautiful and historic venues in New Mexico that provide the acoustic quality needed for excellent choral performances. While many of the venues and the music we sing represent specific religious or cultural traditions, we celebrate the diversity of faith, thought, artistry, and human experiences represented by the music performed in these spaces. We hope that this shared musical experience transcends and binds the audience, as we seek to be inspired by the power of great choral music.

WELCOME FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Emma Marzen Un Caminante is a traveler.

A wayfarer. One who charts their own path. In 1982, Photo: Tira Howard Photography Lawrence “Larry” Bandfield realized his groundbreaking vision when he founded the Santa Fe Desert Chorale (SFDC) here in New Mexico.

SFDC has forged its own path these past 40 years as a pioneer in the choral art form and one of the first fully professional choirs in the nation. Honoring the Chorale’s New Mexican heritage and longstanding cultural focus, our 2022 commissioned work by Jocelyn Hagen, Caminante, features interwoven Spanish and English poetry. Hagen’s piece, premiering on July 24th, served as the inspiration for this year’s theme: Caminante: Journey Through Forty Years.

We carry Larry’s legacy forward today not only through innovative and eclectic choral programming, but also through our prioritization of fiscal responsibility and community engagement.

Expanding Our Community Initiatives While we have missed our traditional in-person programs, we have relished the opportunity to reimagine how we engage with our community during this challenging period.

We presented Hearts in Harmony and Santa Fe Sings! in modified formats throughout 2020-2021, allowing us to interact with each other virtually when we were unable to join together live. Both programs have been suspended for 2022, but we are excited for them to resume in their original formats as soon as circumstances permit.

This past winter we shared our new Outdoor Pop-up Carols across Santa Fe, and we look forward to more of these festivities in December. Our Insights & Sounds program is back and bigger than ever on July 26th in a musical symposium format, featuring experts from Santa Fe and beyond at the Acequia Madre House. Last but not least, our free Pre-Concert Lecture Series will again be available online-only, but will now include a Zoom Q&A session with our expert lecturers every Thursday from July 14-28. All recordings will be available through the end of August.

Highlighting Individual Chorale Singers Our beloved Artist Spotlight Recitals make an equally triumphant return on July 13th and August 5th. Mezzosoprano Dianna Grabowski, tenor Steven Soph, soprano Alissa Ruth Suver, and organist Maxine Thévenot will open

our Festival at the Church of the Holy Faith, presenting works by Purcell, Monteverdi, Handel, and Rossi, among others. Closing our season at St. Bede’s Episcopal Church is another unique program presented by pianist Nathan Salazar, baritone John Buffett, mezzo-soprano Sarah Brauer, and our newest baritone Simon Barrad. This recital will include repertoire complementing The Sounding Sea and a special Ukrainian set.

Celebrating Our Ruby Anniversary For the first time in recent history, and in celebration of our 40th Anniversary, the full 24-voice Chorale will present an exclusive, intimate concert for our most dedicated supporters during our Annual Gala at the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado. No fundraising requests will be made at this event—we will simply enjoy wonderful food, wine, cocktails, and a fabulous performance by your Desert Chorale.

A Community of Giving SFDC’s success has only been possible due to the generosity of an immense circle of supporters. We are thriving thanks to a multitude of friends who have shared in the beauty and power of great choral music with us since 1982. ABOUT THE SANTA FE DESERT CHORALE Founded in 1982 by Lawrence “Larry” Bandfield, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale is one of the longest-running professional music organizations in New Mexico, as well as one of the most distinguished. In his 2020 review of the Strength and Refuge: A Joyous Exploration of the Psalms program at Highland Park United Methodist Church (Tower Arts Series), Scott Cantrell of the Dallas Morning News remarked that, “The Santa Fe Desert Chorale [is] a topnotch, 24-voice group… comprising the crème de la crème of professional choral singers from coast to coast. The singing throughout was boldly projected, finely finished and expressed and, where necessary, quite nimble.”

Artistic Director Joshua Habermann, now in his fourteenth season, leads the Desert Chorale in repertoire spanning seven centuries, from early polyphony to contemporary works. The composition of the Chorale is truly national in scope and the ensemble is recognized as one of the finest American chamber choirs. Now in its 40th year, the

Desert Chorale Summer Festival season is a centerpiece of the cultural life of Santa Fe, and among the nation’s most significant choral events.

The Desert Chorale’s first commercial release, The Road Home, launched at No. 3 on the Billboard Classical Chart following a sold-out CD launch program in Santa Fe. Another recent highlight was an invitational appearance at the 2015 American Choral Directors Association National Conference, which was later broadcast by Minnesota Public Radio. In the 2017-2018 season, the Chorale presented three concerts in the Dallas area, and performed for regional ACDA conferences in Los Angeles and Chicago.

In the 2018-2019 season, the Chorale toured to Dallas and presented regular winter and summer seasons in New Mexico, and in February 2020 the Chorale returned to Dallas as part of the Tower Arts Series of the Highland Park Methodist Church. In 2021, the Chorale began offering full video recordings through their streaming

The ensemble performs at historical sites in Santa Fe such as the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi and Cristo Rey Catholic Church, as well as other venues throughout the Southwest and across the nation.

Through its community engagement programming, the Desert Chorale partners with other musical, artistic, social service, and educational organizations in Santa Fe and beyond. The Hearts in Harmony partnership with the Interfaith Community Shelter, now in its fifth year, is an example of the Chorale’s commitment to strengthening our community through song.

Throughout its history, the Desert Chorale has maintained a commitment to give voice to music from Hispanic and Native American communities. Dedicated to advancing the composers of our time, the Chorale has commissioned 29 works by 26 composers; three-quarters of the composers commissioned have been American. In addition, another seven works have been given their world or American premieres by the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. The Desert Chorale’s Commissioning Club selects and funds a new commission annually.

The Desert Chorale prides itself on its strong relationships within the community of Northern New Mexico, and enjoys collaborations with the Center for Contemporary Arts, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe Jewish Film Festival, Museum of International Folk Art, Acequia Madre House, International Folk Art Market, The Santa Fe Watershed Association, Tomorrow’s Women and galleries throughout Santa Fe, among others.

PILGRIMAGE: SONGS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN BASIN PROGRAM NOTE The European, Asian, and African lands bordering the Mediterranean Sea are home to the three largest Abrahamic religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, each of which has a rich and varied tradition of vocal music. Our journey begins with the achingly beautiful melody Walk to Caesarea, also known by its opening words “Eli, Eli.” This tune, which has become an unofficial second anthem in Israel, was written by composer David Zehavi in 1945 to words of Hannah Szenes, a Jewish paratrooper who was killed in a secret mission to rescue Jews from deportation to Auschwitz. This melody is joined

by Tala’ al-Badru ‘Alayna, a Muslim song of pilgrimage sung for the prophet Muhammad upon his arrival in Medina. The Christian melodies Spirit Seeking Light and Beauty and Veni Creator Spiritus appear as well in a musical representation of the fusion of the three faiths.

The Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) was the primary center of Sephardic Jewish culture from the early Common Era until 1492, when King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella issued the Alhambra Decree requiring Jews to either convert to Christianity, leave the country, or face execution. Many left the only home they had known and were scattered across a broad area from Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean to North Africa and beyond. Some eventually made their way to the New World, including to distant outposts of the Spanish Empire such as New Mexico, where anti-Jewish laws were less strictly enforced. To this day, many New Mexican families continue to learn about previously unknown Jewish heritage that can be traced back to their refugee ancestors. The songs of the Sephardim are as varied as the countries where they settled and are often sung in Ladino, a Judeo-Spanish language that connects the Sephardim to their ancestral home.

We turn to the Levantine region for Shireen Abu-Khader’s setting of Abun D’bashmayo (The Lord’s Prayer).

She combines two traditional Syriac hymns sung in Aramaic, the original language spoken by Jesus and his followers. Abu-Khader’s Ya Lel is original music that draws on syllables and musical modes of the Levant in a composition that, as the composer writes, “tries to stay true to the beautiful linearity of Arabic music.” The two intervening works are Wa Habibi (O Beloved), a Maronite hymn based on an 18th century melody, and Yerushalayim Shel Zahav (Jerusalem of Gold), an ode to the home of the holiest sites of the three major Abrahamic faiths.

The Imazighen (also called Berbers), are the indigenous people of the High Atlas Mountains whose recorded history across North Africa dates back more than three thousand years. Through performances, workshops, and cultural tours, Fattah Abbou has sought to preserve and share the Amazigh folk music traditions in which he was raised. A multi-instrumentalist and singer, Fattah is a cultural ambassador and a passionate advocate for his community. Like much folk music of this region, these songs are often based around call and response between a soloist and a group. Rather than the traditional harmonies of European choral traditions, the focus here is on intricate ornamentation and joyful spontaneity.

Since the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula by Muslim forces in 711, Spain (then known as the Kingdom of Al-Andalus) had been ruled as the westernmost outpost of the Muslim Umayyad Caliphate. Within a few decades of the Muslim consolidation, Christian forces began to mount efforts to reconquer the territory. The Reconquista, as it came to be called, took over seven centuries, until the final Muslim Kingdom of Granada fell in 1492. Una Sañosa Porfía (A Vicious Persistence) depicts the last Muslim king, Muhammad XII, also known as Boabdil, who like the Jews is forced into exile by the victorious Catholic Monarchs. In Amor con Fortuna, the poet similarly decries an unhappy

Ayis This song describes the beauty of a stallion. The poet here is like a painter, conjuring images of movement, embroidery of the saddle, and the dignified gait of a magnificent steed.

Taliouine The song traces the river journey of a poet who travels upstream to the mountains. He describes the beauty of the land, the beautiful riads (houses with gardens), where he is hosted, and the generosity of the people. The poet ends up in a village, where he falls in love with a beautiful girl.

Ntghwi The poet evokes the image of locusts and how they cover the sky after ravaging a field. In a desert agrarian society where food and water are scarce this is a matter of life and death. This song calls for solidarity and cooperation to protect the weakest in the community.

40th ANNIVERSARY SEASON 19

MYSTICS & MAVERICKS Celebrating female sages and innovators, both ancient and modern

howcasing works of medieval feminists ahead of their time, we present pieces by Kassia, the only woman composer in the Byzantine liturgical canon, and Hildegard von Bingen, a patron saint of musicians. We celebrate composer Meredith Monk—MacArthur fellow, two-time Guggenheim fellow, and National Medal of Arts recipient—with a selection of works that was recently released for choral performance, and has not been heard in New Mexico. Caminante, the Chorale’s 2022 commissioned bilingual work by award-winning composer Jocelyn Hagen, enjoys its world premiere. We are also proud to feature another composition from our 2021 commissioned composer, Reena Esmail.

40th ANNIVERSARY SEASON 21

MYSTICS & MAVERICKS PROGRAM NOTE This program celebrates female sages and innovators, both ancient and modern. Hildegard and Kassia were feminists ahead of their time, as well as cutting-edge composers whose chant settings are the pinnacle of medieval music.

With its soaring melody, Hildegard’s Karitas Abundat evokes the great gothic cathedrals of Western Europe, while Kassia’s Idiomelon from the Great Vespers of the Publican and the Pharisee was written for the Byzantine liturgy and has distinctly Eastern elements. This is followed

by Tuttarana of Indian-American composer Reena Esmail, whose Tipping Point was premiered by the Chorale in summer 2021. Tuttarana draws on traditional Hindustani scales and rhythms to create a fascinating fusion of Eastern and Western elements.

In a series of Northern Lights concerts dating back to 2008, the Desert Chorale has become known for its interpretation of Scandinavian and Baltic music. In Kilden, arranger Grete Pedersen sets a traditional Norwegian sacred folk melody, surrounding it with an effect that builds into a great wall of sound, which she then takes away voice by voice until only the original tune remains. The two pieces that follow, Kylä Vuotti Uuta Kuuta (Finland) and Heyr þú Oss Himnum Á (Iceland) share a mystical quality, inviting the listener_ into a state of_ecstatic meditation.

Selga Mence’s Kalejs Kala Debesis breaks the spell with lightning quick ostinatos and muscular rhythms in a tour de force lasting scarcely two minutes.

The Desert Chorale’s Commissioning Club comes together each year to support the Chorale’s long-standing mission to create new music. As its honoree and commissioned composer for 2022, the Club selected Minnesota-based composer Jocelyn Hagen, whose music has been described as “dramatic and deeply moving.” In selecting a text, Hagen was inspired by New Mexico’s unique cultural landscape to write a bilingual Spanish-English work.

Combining poetry of Antonio Machado and Julia Klatt Singer, her new work Caminante (Traveler) divides the choir into two groups, each of which has its own language and its own song. The synergy created when those songs come together reminds us that even amidst an ever more fractious world, possibilities for human connection and cooperation still exist.

Meredith Monk has a long and well-documented career as a pioneer in vocal music. Her honors include a MacArthur “Genius” Award, two Guggenheim fellowships, and the National Medal of Arts. National Public Radio has included her in its list of “Fifty Great Voices.” The compositions heard here represent a broad variety of her work, ranging from pieces drawn from her film Book of Days (Jewish Storyteller/Dance/Dream), to her science fiction opera, The Games, (Astronaut Anthem, Panda Chant II), as well as ATLAS: an opera in three parts (Other Worlds Revealed). In each of them her distinctive compositional voice is there, somehow bypassing conscious thought and reaching us at a primal, human level. Monk has long-standing ties to New Mexico, where she composes seasonally in Canoñes.

Singer, composer, and song-collector Moira Smiley has sung in arenas, cathedrals, kitchens, back porches, sound stages, and on glaciers. Also a multi-faceted composer, she has built a career around a love of singing traditions bridging cultural and social boundaries. In Dance/S’loyfn, S’yogn, Smiley frames a traditional Yiddish folk tune with an original dance. She writes: “the dance rises up against the sorrow…when we have nothing else, we have our voices to make us dance.”

The two pieces that follow, I Live in California and Silverlake are meditations that recall iconic American singer-songwriters Joni Mitchell and Emmylou Harris, respectively. Like so many of the composers on today’s program, Smiley succeeds in capturing a timeless quality that is at once old and new, bridging divides and communicating at an elemental level.

The program closes with Sing About It which was written in 2017 in the wake of one of the many mass shootings that have stained recent American history. Smiley conceives it as an attempt to move us beyond our own echo chambers by reaching out with humility to those with whom we might disagree. As the medium for this message it is fitting that she chose a choir, which by its very nature is a group in which people of disparate backgrounds come together in service of a higher purpose. In Smiley’s words, “singing might crack open a heart just enough to act less out of fear, and more from empathy.”

THE SOUNDING SEA PROGRAM NOTE The sea has long been an inspiration to painters, poets, and composers who are drawn to its majesty and life-giving force. As anyone who has seen a storm move across the ocean can attest, the sea is unpredictable, and its essence is one of constant motion and change. The opening set of music by American composers reflects this dual nature, inspiring us first to introverted reflection in Jake Runestad’s Waves, and then extroverted celebration in Robert Cundick’s Sea Fever.

Three movements of Mason Bates’s Sirens invoke historical themes ranging from the 19th-century German story of the Lorelei who lures sailors to their deaths to the biblical story of Jesus calling his first apostles. Originally written for the men’s ensemble Chanticleer, this is music of great richness, dividing often into as many as twelve separate parts. Almost orchestral in its conceit, the complexity of music is matched by a broad variety of musical textures suggesting the changing face of the sea itself.

Anyone fortunate enough to have experienced dolphins in the wild knows the excitement such sightings can inspire. With its shimmering piano and soaring vocal lines, Matthew Lyon Hazzard’s The Prow captures the sense of adventure, intimacy, and joyful play of nature’s most graceful creatures. When We Are Gone takes a more reflective approach, with breaking waves evoked as a metaphor for the passing of time in Jonathan Talberg’s tender poetry.

by Michael Dennis Browne that explores themes of homecoming, moving us from a place of loss to one of comfort and reconciliation.

As one of the leading American chamber choirs, the Desert Chorale embraces its role in preserving and advancing our national musical heritage. To that end, this program closes with arrangements that speak in a uniquely American voice. Drawing on traditional folk singing, 19th-century hymnody, and the African-American spiritual, three master arrangers—Moira Smiley, Shawn Kirchner and Stacey Gibbs—represent a generation of American musicians who, having come into maturity at the turn of the 21st century, have inspired an exciting new direction in contemporary American choral music.

Just as the sea can give life, it can take it away, as is depicted in Canticum Calamitatis Maritimae (Song of a Maritime Disaster). Finnish composer Jaako Mäntyjärvi was inspired by the 1994 sinking of the MS Estonia in which 852 lives were lost, making it the second greatest peacetime loss of life at sea behind only the Titanic. The text is taken from three sources: the Catholic Requiem Mass, Psalm 107 (“They that go down to the sea in ships...”), and the report of the disaster from the Latinlanguage news service, Nuntii Latini. The piece uses vocal effects to mimic sounds associated with the sinking such as whispering voices to suggest the hiss of sea-spray.

A melody sung by a soprano soloist recalls the hymn “Nearer, My God, to Thee”, which legend identifies as the tune played on the Titanic as it sank. Mäntyjärvi uses unpitched speaking in the rhythm of an “SOS” Morse code distress signal to depict the desperation of the passengers struggling to survive in the frigid Baltic waters. Over eight hundred people perished in a shipwreck in the northern Baltic Sea. The car ferry Estonia, on route from Tallinn to Stockholm, was overturned in a severe storm and sank. There were about 1,000 passengers on board.

910 people lost their lives in the wreck of the Estonia; 139 were saved.

INSIGHTS & SOUNDS SYMPOSIUM Our Insights & Sounds community engagement program is back, in person and bigger than ever! We are pleased to host the inaugural Insights & Sounds Symposium. Join us for a day full of interdisciplinary dialogue through the lens of choral music.

The Symposium will feature three sessions, each combining a discussion and musical selection to reflect the three Desert Chorale Summer Festival programs.

Panelist and topic selections are in progress and will engage a wide swath of the Santa Fe community. Each panel will be followed by a 20-minute musical selection from the respective program. All 24 Desert Chorale singers and many of our guest artists for the Summer Festival will be performing throughout the day, accompanied by program commentary from Artistic Director Joshua Habermann.

This project also honors the legacy of the historic Acequia Madre House, which was built and stewarded by three remarkable Santa Fe women, including the founder of El Rancho de las Golondrinas, Leonora Curtin. These women reflect the spirit of our Mystics & Mavericks program, and our theme: Caminante–to travel one’s own path.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Joshua Habermann Joshua Habermann is in his fourteenth season as Artistic Director of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. Since joining the ensemble he has broadened its repertoire to include not only a cappella literature but also choral-orchestral masterworks and unique concert experiences that combine music, images, poetry and the spoken word. In 2015 the Desert Chorale was a featured performer at the national convention of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) in Dancing the Mystery, a program featuring the poetry of Sufi masters Rumi and Hafiz.

Habermann has led honor choirs and choral festivals in North and Latin America, Europe and Asia. As a singer (tenor) he has performed with the Oregon Bach Festival Chorus (Eugene, Oregon), and Conspirare (Austin, Texas).

Recording credits include three projects with Conspirare: Through the Green Fuse, Requiem, a Grammy nominee for best choral recording in 2006, and Threshold of Night, a Grammy nominee for best choral recording and best classical album in 2009.

From 2011-2022, Joshua Habermann served as director of the Dallas Symphony Chorus, the official vocal ensemble of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, where he prepared the 200-voice chorus for classical series concerts. Highlights with the DSO include performances of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, Verdi’s Requiem, Berlioz’s Te Deum, and Britten’s War Requiem, which was performed for the ACDA national convention in 2013. Recent international collaborations include performances of Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, and Duruflé’s Requiem with the Swedish Radio Orchestra, as well as tour performances in Spain, France, Sweden, Estonia and Finland.

engagements in Havana, Cuba, and undertook concert tours in Germany, the Czech Republic, and China. National invitations include the Waging Peace Festival in Eugene, Oregon, multiple appearances at the California Music Educators Convention, and an appearance at the American Choral Directors Association regional convention in 2008.

From 2008-2011 Habermann was Director of Choral Studies at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, where he led the graduate program in conducting, and directed the Frost Chorale. Notable projects in Miami included an appearance at the Florida ACDA convention and collaborations with the New World Symphony and conductor Michael Tilson Thomas in music of Ives, Schubert and Beethoven. During this same period Habermann led the Masterchorale of South Florida in performances of masterworks such as Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Haydn’s Creation, and Mozart’s Requiem.

A native of California, Joshua Habermann is a graduate of Georgetown University and the University of Texas at Austin, where he completed doctoral studies in conducting with Craig Hella Johnson. He lives in Honolulu with his wife Joanna, daughter Kira, and son Kai.

IN MEMORIAM In Memory of Don L. Roberts August 13, 1938 - March 30, 2022 The Santa Fe Desert Chorale mourns the passing of our dear friend and Director Emeriti Don L. Roberts.

Don, alongside his beloved wife Sally, was a champion for the Chorale, introducing new friends to the choral music he loved every year—many of whom have since Photo: The Photography Studio become donors and Board members themselves. Don attended every rehearsal each season, enjoying the process for all of our programs from start to finish.

In 2011, Sally commissioned their friend and composer Frank Ferko to create a new choral work in celebration of the 75th birthday of Don Roberts, resulting in the July 19, 2016 Santa Fe Desert Chorale world premiere of the Tewa-text based Song of the Sky Loom. Don’s love of choral music and the music of the American Southwest Pueblo peoples had a significant impact on the Desert Chorale and the choral canon at-large. His generosity and friendship will always be remembered.

The Commissioning Club works to identify and advance emerging composers, to expand the choral canon for choruses around the world, and to ensure the legacy of the Desert Chorale as one of the country’s leading chamber choirs.

The Club builds on the Desert Chorale’s rich tradition: in its 40 years, the Chorale has commissioned 29 works by 26 composers.

A composer for the 2025 programming season will be chosen after reviewing scores and listening to selections suggested by Artistic Director Joshua Habermann.
